Markus Raetz is an artist who has broken down the boundaries of an opposite, showing literally antonyms, such as ‘yes’ and ‘no’, ‘non’ and ‘oui’, ‘we’ and ‘me’. His works show both sides of antonyms that give audience to feel ambiguous in the same time. These are distinctly different from illusion depending on the direction, ‘yes’ can be prominent or ‘non’. Thus, he does not emphasize any single word, but enables the audience to see what he sees and how he perceives it. But what is even more impressive here is that people can able to look at the process how the words change, rather than seeing ‘yes’ and ‘no’ in the same time. Looking at his works, people might often feel in the sense of 'no' from the standpoint of 'yes', or the other way, but not both. The part that changes from ‘yes’ to ‘no’ and ‘no’ to ‘yes’ can be represent of a boundary that demolish age of the youngs and the olds. Everyday, people take a stand in the neutral when conflicts come across and act flexibly in which direction they might go, depending on the situation. Therefore, the boundary is not a line nor barrier but feeling of each cognitive process at each stage. If you feel differently from one day to another in a normal passing environment, then the moment is a moment when you are aware of it in a different direction than normal.
Markus Raetz, From a Space to the Place, pg.110
Richard Serra, who says "when you leave the place where the work is placed, it must be destroyed." is a good indication of the nature of site-specific art. In other words, when a work is planned, a specific place must also be planned and should be made to be a part of it. If the work leaves the place, the original intention, meaning, and concept of the work are all destroyed.
...
The courtroom and the dismissal of <Tilted Arc> tell us that art can exist in the public by the meaning of art itself, and leave a question, "Should art be given priority in the function of public rights?". The site-specific art has the value of the artist’s work time and this value transformed to the place where it becomes a stage to the artist.
...
Perhaps Richard Serra is the artist who achieved the art that has a direction with faith in the reality. His work has been accomplished only in the unpredictable situation with his own character and these finally made him the perfect artist of the site-specific art.
Richard Serra, From a Space to the Place, pg.129
Pina Bausch is a myth in the 20th century modern dance world. The qualifier "the most outstanding innovator in the last 50 years" explains her position. How did this small dancer captivate the hearts of the world? The secret lies in 'interest in humans'. Pina Bausch always listens to human emotions rather than seeking harmonious choreography or superior technology. She has been constantly exploring ways to express and express the existential questions that human beings must inevitably raise, such as love and hate, longing and loneliness, frustration and fear, memory and oblivion. An important factor that cannot be missed in this creative work is communication with dancers. While dancers are collaborators beyond a passive hitter moving along a designated line, choreographers are a kind of designer who transform, connect, and unify what is discovered during practice. Notable fact is body languages and common movements are conspicuous elements of Pina’s work. She uses these factors to express the details which came from her common lifestyle with colorful dance techniques. Unfamiliar feelings calmly hit when people first encounter Pina 's work. This 'nonformation' can be somewhat uncomfortable for an audience who is familiar with well-choreographed dance. Ironically, therefore, she gained the hearts of people around the world. Sharing opinions with the members and the experiences of the audience on a realistic subject that everyone can understand made huge communication field among the stage. Primitive emotions of human are freely unfolded in a violent poison, an elegant duet, a dynamic dance, and the audience gets fresh impression through the beauty of this body. While this German choreographer dismantled the barriers of fine art and the public, it also broke the boundaries between art forms. Beginning with the introduction of theater composition, she has presented new possibilities by combining dance with various artistic elements such as music, film, opera, and art. Pina finally made a dance as an integrated art. Pina Baush, From a Space to the Place, pg.321

Waving Light The goal of this project is to select one work from each studio as a representative and try to build it in actual scale., Gorgeous lights were utilized in pavilion to complement the dark corridor and drab character, which attracted many people's attention. In addition, we learned the mock-up process and studied the construction procedure in detail. PERSONAL PROJECT

The Pavilion project is my first project as a student of Department of Architecture. The site is a window frame located at the end of the aisle of the L building. Despite the fact that the building is the Department of Architecture, the corridor reminisces a cold and dull laboratory. I wanted to transform this drab space into a space where the hallway is beyond the function of merely passing through, yet to a place where people can linger around.

Students walk through the corridor toward the gorgeous lights that are seen far away. The entrance to the pipe, which was initially seen as a line, is gradually transformed into a colorful material and color circle, giving pleasure while changing the perception. The interior of the pipe is made of different materials and colored films, making it more powerful. This project made our team deal with the very first full-scale work. The pavilion is constructed of materials that are prefabricated from the pipe company which are in contract with us. It is then artificially recreated by our hands. This project is an opportunity to learn the overall work related to construction such as sequence of the full-scale work, cooperation, construction period, and etc. Rough rendering image (from top) front, perspective, left view, rhino 3d, 565x280 model photo, DSLR Camera, 1830x1220

UP
The commercial areas surrounding Hongik University (a.k.a Hongdae) used to be filled with tourists and college students until it has been stalled lately. So, what is now rising is the neighboring town, Yeonnam. During this stagnation period, Yeonnam-dong has rapidly emerged. It has become the hub of all sites with word-of-mouth among the population. As this town has a high potential of becoming a landmark, the Frat House is the optimum.

Considering the surrounding environment, the minimalist yet sometimes luxurious Frat House is what the client mostly requires. There are rooms not only for the client but also for the people with common interests to hang around together. The Frat House is filled with various equipment and facilities around the center-courtyard for the clients and their friends to enjoy. It has the seminar room on the right side, the swimming pool with the theater on the left and with a final touch, there is also a music room on the top floor. seminar room, rendering image, rhino 3d v-ray, 565x280

Banners Maketh Play This is a project of ”Union of Architecture University in Seoul” We started this project by recycling and reusing old banners. We also used pipes and banners to create a small facility in Seonyu Island Park. TEAM PROJECT

site Seonyu Island Park 3343, Seonyu-ro, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul size 100m2 program pavilion Seonyu Island Park is different from the parks that are often seen in urban areas. It is date 2016.04 - 2016.05 because it is transformed into a park without harming the nature of the water purification team project plant. By exposing the concrete waterway and the mechanism of the water purification system, it became a space where people gather interests in the characteristics of the park and convey the meaning of reproduction. The mechanism was revealed to the external area by the same principle to create a pavilion that harmonizes the way of expressing the reproduction of Seonyu Island. In addition, it tried to convey the method of reproduction using banners which are hard to reproduce. The movement of the banner by the mechanism visually attracts people’s attention. Most of the banners are used for a certain period, then they turn into waste. This banner, which is hard to be recycled, meets with the architectural pavilion and causes curiosity regarding the kind of regeneration it can take.

Banner Reuse We wanted to make a banner that conveys a different meaning in the role of creating space in the advertisement, which is the original role of the banner, yet hard to play its role due to its short-lasting function.
First Replay Using Discarded Material We kept thinking about how to use the banner and the sandwich panel as a temporary scaffold.
Second Replay Using Non-Discarded Material The steel pipe scaffold was used, and the dimension of the member was set to the unit length that was previously distributed.
Assembly Minimizing permanent bonds such as welding and increasing the number of fluid bonds like clamps. Thus, the steel pipe scaffold-ing pipe can be relocated after it has finished its role as a pavilion.

In this pavilion, the elements of banners are communicating through the direct participation of the users. The space where the light and shadow falls in the mechanism keeps changing and this makes participants feel thrilled. Not only participants but also people who are watching indirectly feel the interest. People's participation is the driving force of the banner movement, and the beginning of the mechanism at the same time. Through direct experience, shadows created by light and banners change their appearance, which allows people to see how space changes. At the same time, the people who are visiting can also experience indirectly, causing the people around the pavilion to 'ventilate' its rebirth. We also wanted to make visitors experience the change of space. The discarded banners through this process allow users to have an impressive experience and hope to include a new sense of rebirth

CUBE The project was to integrate all the galleries scattered within the university into one representative gallery. It was outside the school grounds, so I had to design it prominently so that not only the students but also the outsiders could participate. The project put creative and separate spaces, which was different from the typical building structure and movement, allowing various people to work. PERSONAL PROJECT

2016, Hongik university's gallery has come to the place of youth, Hongdae. While Hongdae has lots of commercial facilities, it has few cultural places. Appearance of gallery will help make people become more active and provide opportunities to younger and older generations to visit. As the site of the university is narrow, many exhibitions have been scattered in various buildings. This made complication among the visitors and hard for them to find the shows. Integrating all the exhibitions became a top priority since then. A new site near school would make all the previous exhibitions into one and make people possible to view them easily without getting lost.

Gallery 'CUBE' is a huge cube-shaped mass as it is called, with its corners embedded in the ground. The entrance of the gallery besides the mass is in the form of a pavilion, which is the starting point of all exhibitions. The left side of the site allows the students to enter and the right side allows the visitors. The space where the two roads face each other naturally enters the gallery site while people are walking. The glass sculptured pavilion entrance greets the people on the small site and a gallery mass is on the opposite side.

The entrance is unified into one, while the entrance to the exhibition and commercial facilities is thoroughly separated. There is an up-and-down exhibition center with a huge hall, and a long escalator connecting the two exhibition halls drastically piercing the center of the hall making people to feel grandeur. Various activities are held in the hall. Mostly, lectures and different types of shows are held. The music and sounds from the hall do not affect the pedestrians outside due to the comparatively lower level of the hall. Moreover, the entrance of the hall is limited, activities in the 'CUBE' are all independent.

06 UAUS X MMCA
The Ball On the occasion of the 30th anniversary, the collaborative competition was hosted by ‘UAUS’ and the ‘National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art’. Three teams were selected from all over the country and ‘The Ball’ was selected. The aim of the project is to create a pavilion where citizens can play. Fortunately, the weather was sunny throughout the festival and it was a successful exhibition without any accidents. TEAM PROJECT

The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) held a festival 'Siwall Dabang' celebrating the 30th anniversary of its opening. The 'Siwall Dabang' is an outdoor cultural event held in a museum which is decorated with beautiful autumn leaves. Especially this exhibition, expands the character of the museum as an art festival where viewers, writers and artists come together as one. The theme of this festival involves artists from exhibitions, performances, architecture, dance, and workshops. Through this festival, visitors will be able to meet various artists in diverse fields. They can break down the barrier of existing arts. The Hongik University team, which was selected upon the theme for 'memories', made a pavilion with balloons as its main material. Balloons, regardless of country, are props that cannot be missed at parties and events. Hereby, people unconsciously think of anniversaries or special days when they encounter the pavilion. The balloons become the mediators that remind visitors of their memorable days. The balloon is a module and at the same time a structure itself which symbolizes celebration, and party. In addition, it smoothly breaks down the boundaries between art and architecture, and at the same time harmonizes with the venue. Beyond the strong architectural character, 'The Ball' naturally melts into the surrounding art form.

The Ball
'The Ball' is a kind of headquarter that aims to make space for people to conduct functional activities such as guiding and receiving events under the pavilion. During the ceremony, visitors can feel both the characters of pavilion, and the functional activities performed thereunder. The main construction principle is to secure the lower space by connecting the balloons with helium which has a lower density than that of the atmosphere. After finishing both ends of the V-shaped balloon, each balloon is woven together with cable ties and used as one module. Referring to the plan, we float these in the air by filling gas at the same time. 'The ball' is completed within few minutes, where each balloon becomes a wall and a ceiling. balloon module, DSLR Camera, 1830x1220

art in CUBE The core of this project is to review the technical and functional aspects of the building and reconstruct it according to the user's requirements. The dynamic facade was ruined through decades which turned the building monotonous. Therefore, this art college building is now equipped with a splendid lobby and a work space in accordance to the school's reputation. It was also a great chance to organize a two-month study and prepare a program book that could be presented professionally. PERSONAL PROJECT

As there are more than 50 percent of art students residing in this building, facility problems never stop. Cleanliness, flow of other students, and space environmental problems, which have resulted from negligence of school. Therefore, it is urgent to renew all the problems and design plans with professionals who can deal with the current situations. Corresponding to art students in 2017, the Department of Fine Arts at Hongik University aims for better quality of life and sustainable urban development. Toward these problems, renovation is focused on inter-disciplinary approach. As the Fine Arts Hall (a.k.a. Building F) has zero identity, almost none knows where the Building F is nor the existence of this building even though hundreds of students pass through it every day. In contrast with the 1970s, Building F lost its dynamic characteristics surrounded by other school buildings. Loss of its identity results in horrible consequences. No daylight, No existence, No concern. No nothing.

To revitalize, united private gallery and the machine hall may help the building to stand out. With Building U (New Arts Hall) and Building E (Design and Arts Hall), this gallery cube is placed in middle of the three buildings, making art students and other people to have easier access than before. The cube is all covered with glass attracting viewers and making it look outstanding. Contrast with the former design (solid and cold red bricks cover), glass makes people to bond with each other and communicate through its transparency not only physically but also network-wise. Top of this cube, triangular pavilion invites a great number of visitors showing off its elevation. All the users will be filled with the beauty of this frame structure which will make HAS great again. (Hongik Art School)

yello B This semester focused on the task of designing a complex building that meets the regulations and the nature of the site in earnest. I planned this building as a landmark of Yeouido which could be used by citizens and users by putting office and business hotels together. ‘yello B’, which is a huge bridge that penetrates directly through two masses would represent Yeoido’s landmark characteristics. site 115, Yeouigongwon-ro, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul site area 3379m3 program office and hotel date 2017.09 - 2017.12 personal project
Yeoido is the capital of the finance in Seoul. As economy developed in 1970s, the nation’s financial companies were concentrated and all investors gathered in Yeoido. However, due to the development of the Internet and transportations, people getting together in Yeoido became unnecessary. It has been waning in recent years. The first goal of revitalizing Yeouido was to build a site that allows the citizens to enjoy the area without breaking its own atmosphere. The site presented by the school had a cluster of business companies on the left side and a Han River Public Park on the right side which connects the two meccas. The Kakao group, which is emerging lately to all ages, was perfect for this site. The office had to hold two companies in one because of the Kakao’s characteristic, collaboration. Kakao Bank was only used in online without any services at real which made people to have trouble. Therefore, it is a win-win situation for Kakao group and Yeoido to have both. Office on the left and business hotel on the right made courtyard on the middle that make people to gather and enjoy. The ground connecting the citizens and the bridge connecting the users show it instantly as their moto ‘Connect Everything’. In this project, I was able to learn the deep part of the construction by dealing with diverse materials and details. Curtain wall, the duct of the ceiling, the finishing materials, and HVAC system was not covered before. It was also an opportunity to learn the layout of the columns to plan the basement parking lot and to know the sequence of the buildings construction. Study books, drawings, and panels, which are the core of the project, are well representing the ‘yello B’. The panel is including the final renderings, drawings, evacuation plan, and section detail.
