This catalogue has been written to recount

and promote a series of works painted in the past two years by the artist: the outcome is like a short flm on a meaningful and intense part of her recent artistic production. As it often happens, works of art come from an inner itch, a necessity, a generative and not foreordained drive which is beyond any specifically designed project. And yet, when we kneeled down (all the canvases were laid on the foor of her studio) and embraced them with our eyes, we realized that we were faced by a vast multitude of people, true and diverse, whose silence was only a mere illusion. From the density of those silent stories, a narrative fil-rouge was unfolding, striking a vibration which sparkled every single one of those faces, of those figures, and us, along with them. Each one of them holding more questions than answers and aiming for the contagion; so that whoever they ran into, would be wrapped in their anticipation and wonder.

f'aces has been tought out and created as to

highlight the emotional impact when seeing the works of art, presenting them with the utmost prominence, and the most accurate reproductions that digital technology provides us with, so as to reach a vast, but also, selected audience. Every single work has been reproduced as to give an idea of its real size. All the details can be found on page 86. Some of them can be paired, others can be assembled at one’s own will. The words, the verses, crossing the space of this catalogue, do not intend to add anything to the paintings themselves, if not another key, another viewpoint from where to make out the blurred and powerful meaning of this work.

Alice Tamburini Works

f'aces is the first project by Ettore Mildwin Art and thus represents, in its happening, a sort of poetic and aesthetic statement for the future.

With this work we would like to honor all those doctors and paramedics which in these months have been giving Italy and the world a stunning example of sacrifice and generosity, way beyond all expectations. A most profound thought goes to those who, during this Pandemic crisis, have passed onto the back of the canvas away from the sight of their loved ones.

with all our heart

My writings see the light on a very specific day, in a very specific place. And then, they grow,

away from me, invisible: they struggle to exist once more. It is a process which, for its most part, happens far from the light. But then, when the time is right, I quietly open the drawer and count the survivors. And for those, in the months ahead, a constant tormented process of filing, torching, shearing and use of any other tool for cutting and conforming will take place. And that process will cease simply out of tiredness or deadline but not completion. That, which will not be lapsed, will eventually be written. As for this writing goes, well, it is entirely accidental. Others should have produced the words that would have rolled down next to Alice's work, but that did not happen and thus someone just had to do it. I hope I have done it well enough, 'cause optimum is the enemy of good.

indispensible painting 90

ALICE ABOUT HERSELF

Let me begin with the eyes. I paint loneliness in search of a name. My paintings have no titles until they identify with someone, until they find a body. From being characters they become people: the unexpected adjustment of an object to my wish, quoting Roland Barthes. They take shape from oil and acrylic colors, from wallpaper; they are cut, torn, washed and repainted, darkened and dug out again. They are just as complex as the personalities they will inhabit. They would want to check up their double, carefully sizing it up and at last abandon the painting. They ask not to be painted any longer, they want to become flesh: retreat from the portrait, become people. Alice is a name that carries wonders with it. And yet, not always: my first painting when I was at the Academy was called Envy, a painful and screamed-out blackness. Now, exactly as back then, painting is unavoidable/indispensable/needful. With time it has taken almost a circus quality, while maintaining loneliness and fierceness.

biography & rewards

Alice Tamburini got her diploma from the Istituto Statale d’arte in Forlì in 1990, to graduate seven years later at the Academy of Visual Arts in Bologna. At the age of 5 she decided to show her drawings to Maria Pasini Morigi, a painter from Cesena, asking her to show them along with those of the artist in a one-man-show Maria was preparing for the city of Badia Prataglia. The day after Maria Pasini Morigi told her that her drawings were highly appreciated, and it was right there and then that Alice decided to become a painter. Her first exhibition took place in 1990, at the XC Pacifici Hall in Forlì. During that time Alice found the perfect space for her studio, an amazing old tobacco barn in the town of Gambettola, where she stayed for 20 years. At the Academy of Visual Arts she met Enrico Lombardi, an artist she defines as her mentor, and with him, participated in many prestigious art exhibitions. In 1995 she came in 3rd place at the Biennale Arte Romagnola held at the Palazzo del Ridotto, Galleria Comunale d'Arte in Cesena, and in 1999 she received an award, as a young painter, given to her from the city of Cesena. From 2002 to 2010 she had to slow down on her artistic production due to the birth of her three

children, but from the year 2013 she fully resumed her activity, counting among the several collaborations she has had, galleries from Florence (Spazio d'Arte and Galleria Merlino); Ferrara (Palazzo Scroffa) and Venice (Art Studio). Some of her works have been shown at International Art Fairs in the States, such as in 2018 NYC The Armony Show and L.A. Art Los Angeles Contemporary, in 2017 New Mexico Art Santa Fè, Colorado Art Aspen, Washington Seattle Art Fair and Chicago Art Expo Chicago). In the Summer 2018 she went on a journey of research and Body Painting performance with her daughter, which took them to Italy and France. In October-November of the same year she took part in Paratissima, in the group-show Base Milano and in the Caserma La Marmora in Turin, I.C.S. section with her own hall. In February 2019, during the Art Fair in Bologna, she organized a one-man show called “Autonomia” at the Off, and in the same month she was part of a theatre act with a body painting performance. In March 2019, in the city of Forlì, she had a one-man show at the Galleria Artistica and Banco. In May of the same year, she organized another solo show called “Origins of the visible” at the Galleria dell’immagine in Rimini.

body painting performance

(Atto D'Amore / Act of Love) Alice considers body painting an archaic ritual referring to its primordial origin. Along with her in this performance, we can see the dancer Roberto di Camillo and the cellist Sebastiano Severi. Unfolding a narrative that, like an umbilical cord, ties the three artists, the creative work becomes visible and comes alive.

95

f’aces

The blend of these three different artistic languages creates a captivating performance reminding the audience of ancestral emotions: Roberto di Camillo, an eclectic dancer of rare sensibility, by donating his body to the painting, successfully gives movement and sculptural quality to the work of art, wisely supported by the cello of Sebastiano Severi, who gathers and unites the diverse forms of expression-.

Alice Tamburini

96

97

The performance, about 40 minutes long, unfolds through a body-painting action on a dancer who, gruadually, gains life and motion. The music supports the gestures and the creation, thus becoming itself a performer, up to the evocative and lasting end.

what’s next ALICE'S FUTURE MOVES (curated by Daniele Vignatelli)

Asking Alice about her future projects is like questioning the clouds. She states that research is unpredictable, and that her work is nothing else but the outcome of mistakes, overlays, absences and excesses. There is no project, no trajectory. It is a constant wandering, where mistakes can either be welcomed or cursed, or maybe both, but in the end it is them, the mistakes which bless us with their unexpected beauty. “My work is just the natural expression and conseguence of my life, my paintings are the diary of what I live, fear, love, find and push away. I react to life with endless experimentation, I throw onto the canvas and then, I work in order to remove; I do not always use a brush but often a rag. I paint non stop, like in a vertical dance, in the midst of all mixed feelings and everything is tied up. In the months to come, after this refolding season, I will definitely search human contact with the public, emotions and new performances, as well as ideas and collaborations with other artists, perhaps in nature. I hear a strong call towards a (re)birth, nature, the earth, metamorphosis and any other kind of transformations.” Yes indeed, we will hear of her.
