The Column Where have all the close friends gone? Every so often television entertainment comes out with a dramatic sitcom illustrating the relationships that occur between close friends. Normally in their high twenties, early thirties these usually stereotypical characters experience the ups and downs of early professionalism while searching for companionship. Friends, Seinfeld and most recently How I Met Your Mother, all depict a close nit group of friends that support each through relationship problems. As significant others come and go, their friendships withstand. With that said, how close do these fictional plots actually relate to real life? When it comes to close friendships, what really happens when significant others, outside of the group, enter the lives of one of its members? For the sitcoms, the friendships usually remain the same. However, in real life as some of us couple off, far too often are the remaining singles left with unresolved spin-offs. One warm Friday in July, my friends and I decided an outside, late night reunion was necessary to make up for the last few weeks of constant rain and lack of togetherness. After some drinks and burgers, catching up was replaced with hilarious reminiscing and before we knew it we were back three years and into 30 beers. I began to truly appreciate the friendships I had fashioned and after numerous stories of relationship drama, I began to also appreciate my current bachelor status. Sadly, these channeled feelings of appreciation soon turned into negative reception. It was slightly before midnight and as I returned from inside with a bag of chips and a bowl of salsa, I realized I would be dinning alone. Some had left and others were leaving and once again, as the only single in the group, I was by myself with a slight buzz on and huge mess to clean up. That same night, my sister Leslie and her friend Ally aka Q, were also experiencing the effects of close friendships. At a local bar, surrounded by old friends in new relationships, they wondered why two attractive young professionals like themselves were singled out. By the end of night, Q determined to leave with a prospect, approached two familiar looking guys that were sitting at the bar staring in their direction. Waving over her single partner in crime she and Leslie engaged in about twenty minutes of superficial conversation before suggesting they meet the following night. One of the guys while pointing in the direction of their friends asked whether or not their boyfriends would be jealous. The guys had seen Q and Leslie in the bar numerous times before and witnessed the affectionate showcase of a single gal and her gay best friend. After Leslie cleared up the miss understanding that their assumed boyfriends were nothing of the sort, she immediately realized that the problem wasn’t them, it was the abundance of close friends that used their company to escape the unwanted companies of their significant others. A few hours later, as I put out a fading fire, I began to reminisce over my faded friendships. Ironically enough, half an hour later, I received a phone call from one of my departed guest wanting to talk about an issue she was having with her boyfriend. So in the end, as preached through the friendship sitcom, a friend is supposed to be honest, supportive and careful not to judge. So how do we honestly support the closest people in our lives jumping into something that is driving them away? We don't really have to. All we need to do is sit back, wait for them to call on us when need be and hope that they do the same for us. After all that’s what friends are for.

Y ou’ve seen the ads online, on buses, in the newspaper and pretty much everywhere you go. You probably know a friend or colleague who’s done it, why haven’t you? I mean, you’ve done online dating. Speed dating has gotten very popular in the last decade. It has been featured in movies like Hitch, the 40 year-old virgin and TV shows like Sex and the city, the L word. It really is a great way for any single to jump start a dating life. It’s true that you know in 3-8 minutes if you are attracted to your date. I’ve put together the pros and cons of speed dating so you may decide whether it is for you or not.
Pros of speed dating Most speed dating services are inexpensive. You meet several people in a few hours. You get to socialize in a comfortable, safe environment. Some Services pre-screened daters to ensure match. Speed dating is a no-pressure, no-obligation first date. Daters get to meet people they would never meet otherwise. Only daters who mutually select each other gets each other’s contact information. If you don’t make any connections, nobody will know.
Cons of speed dating Everything is based on first impression, no second chances. Daters have only a few minutes to make a good first impression. Some speed dating services are expensive. There is no refund, you may get a rain check if the men to women ratio is uneven. Daters have to register prior to speed dating event. You may not make any connections. Speed dating is time-efficient, no-nonsense dating which to me is more effective than online dating. Though speed dating is popular, it is not for everyone. My advice is before you jump into speed dating, do your homework. Research the different speed dating companies, read reviews, and learn about your local speed dating organizers. Whatever route you choose to use for dating does not matter. In the end, finding your soul mate is all that matters. 9

LEO July 23-August 22 You've got an extra knack with sizing people up, not to mention assessing all sorts of situations in an uncanny manner. The trick is that you'll have to pry the attention off yourself first. VIRGO August 23-September 22 Is that a little romantic tension between you and a certain someone? Well, are you just going to let it sit there or are you going to explore the possibilities? The stars say take the next step! LIBRA September 23-October 22 Chatting with a new person, whether online or faceto-face, can lead all sorts of unexpected places now. You're thinking big and expressing yourself beautifully -- and they're loving you. SCORPIO October 23 - November 21 You're particularly skilled at uncovering what's beneath the surface -- and it's a skill that'll come in handy right now. Ask around. Look closely. Pay attention to the ambient vibe. SAGITTARIUS November 22-December 21 You're sitting pretty if the stars have their say, the object of much admiration and the center of certain attention. Keep those eyes open for an unexpected sign, opportunity or occurrence. CAPRICORN December 22-January 19 If at first you don't succeed, well, whatever with them -- move on and say hi to the next cutie! Cupid loves somebody who makes an effort. Show you're trying and some arrows will be flying!
AQUARIUS January 20-February 18 Look around and see who needs introducing! Whether you're the official host or not, you're putting people together in possibly miraculous ways now -and the universe will return the favor. PISCES February 19-March 20 The stars are sending some pretty sweet stuff your way -- what'll you do to enjoy it today? Hint: Spacing out is not the way to go. Stay fully present and receive some cosmic gifts! ARIES March 21-April 19 Now this is a lot more like it! Pack your social schedule both during the day and tonight -- you'll love meeting new people and maybe developing some deeper bonds with a certain someone now. TAURUS April 20-May 20 Of course you want the initial attraction, but right now you're particularly interested in getting into who they are and what they believe. The right romantic candidates respond in kind.
GEMINI May 21-June 21 You'll learn so much by listening now, you may hardly need to say a word. Maybe it's because when you do talk, you're asking the right questions and making them feel like the only person in the room.
CANCER June 22-July 22 Looks like some sort of conflict or challenge surrounds a social occasion or interaction now. Rather than turning away, put your best foot forward. Make a real effort to make yourself understood.
