{Editor’s letter} Dear Readers, My editor’s letter this month is short and sweet. The reason is because I just want to thank and acknowledge couple people who have helped MSM. I want to start by thanking Anya, last month’s cover girl. She really came through for MSM at the cover model search. Anya worked out a great location for the search, Mantra and she helped with getting a lot of people to sign up during the search. Thanks Anya. The second person that I want to thank is very important to me and to MSM, our very dear writer, Janelle Powers. Ms. Powers has so far been a huge cheerleader for MSM and is working on helping us succeed. Thank you so very much Janelle. Also, thanks to all the readers who are still supporting MSM. Best,

The Column Is it Better to Settle or Set Limits? Excitement, butterflies and passion: feelings we tend to experience after meeting a new fling/hope to be lover. There are times however when those lustful feelings run parallel with uncertainty, confusion and doubt. If the whole purpose of dating is to figure out whether or not there is compatibility, what do we do when “love at first site” is replaced with “we’ll see what happens”? Do we move on, in hopes to find “true love” or do we hold on to what we have and pray that it forms into what we want? When it comes dating, where do we draw the line between settling and setting limits? After a conversation with my roommate about nine failed attempts at finding love in 2009, I wondered, had I been searching for true love or true perfection? That night I made some calls and shortly afterwards made my way into the city, this time with a new found perspective of what I was looking for. Just as my crew and I had settled into our most frequent night spot, my favorite song and my favorite beer encouraged a meeting between me and my soon to be favorite DJ. A corona promotion set up right next to the DJ booth provided a perfect opportunity for me to set up a date. One hour later, after faking interest in a conversation of old school hip hop, instead of requesting a song, I suggested drinks and dinner. A quick “yes” and a short locking of lips sealed the deal, but just as quickly I felt as if I made a mistake. There were no butterflies, no sparks, no….nothing. Was my mind setting limits around finding the right one or was it time for me to settle for the one right in front of me, and see what happens? Across town and a little to the north, my roommate Erin was about to set some limits of her own. She and her chef lover had spent the last four months spending a majority of their time together and rarely spending a night alone. Unfortunately, the chef’s inability to place a label on their relationship was stirring the pot. Finally after meeting his family, receiving invites to friends’ barbecues and engaging in a daily routine of carting his catering ass to work each morning, Erin decided that she could no longer settle for a labeless relationship and wanted a definite answer as to where things were headed. In the end the relationship ended, but Erin quickly realized that it was better to have set limits than settle for a chef with a sour batch of relationship perspective. It had been two weeks and a half of dozen dates later and the DJ and I continued to mix it up. There were fabulous dinners, numerous cocktails and even a play in disguise. Unfortunately as time went on, the spark began to fade and I was beginning to feel as if I was settling for a boring remix rather than a love song. Then one night, while walking through the commons with my dimly lit DJ, I recognized a familiar face. It was an ex of mine who although the passion was there when we were together, his passion for partying would override commitment. Remembering the feelings I had for my ex made me realize the current feelings I had for the DJ were not strong enough to continue playing. Needless to say, I would request nothing more from the DJ after that night. On the ride home I came to the realization that sometimes we may be too quick to write someone off, so it’s important to give it chance. In the same sense, it’s better to set limits around what we want rather than settle for something lesser in what we have. 8

June 21st is the first day of Summer. One thing I love about the summer time is the food, especially seafood. Chef Eric Thompson of Trattioria 89 Centrale located in Milford, MA has put together his recipe for the shrimp scampi. The shrimp scampi is a exquisite seafood dish that can added on to pasta or rice.

Cut him loose By Janelle Powers
How many times has this happened to you?
You’re in a relationship and things seem to be going really well when all of a sudden you start noticing little things about your partner that stop you dead in your tracks. I am sure you know what I mean, the little things that didn’t seem like such a big deal in the beginning but now seem like deal breakers. He makes noise when he chews, she snores like a lumberjack, he’s cheap, and she’s vain. All these things and many, many more can either make or break a relationship. The question then becomes when to cut him loose? If you’re really looking for a long time commitment then you may want to ask yourself; how much can I deal with, and is this person the one I really want to be with? You have to say as a good friend of mine says “you must look at the relationship globally, take emotion out of the equation.” Now I am not saying that love doesn’t matter, it always matters but when you’re looking for someone to spend the rest of your life with you must look at the big picture. Love is not all you need and indeed in the wrong hands can wreak havoc in your life. Do you have the same goals; do you have the same values? Are finances an issue and is their personality compatible with your own. These are all questions you must ask yourself when looking for a partner. Your partner should bring out the best in you not the worst. My most important guideline for finding an ideal lover and partner is happiness. Do they make you happy or do they drive you crazy and not it that good way. We should never short change ourselves, of that I am sure and no matter how impossible it seems to find “the proverbial one” don’t give up and don’t settle for content. Happiness is something everyone should strive for. You can’t be happy with everything in your life and you can’t be happy all the time but as long as you’re trying life will be a lot more pleasant. Love is not perfect or predictable, it cannot be mapped out or planned but it is essential to know what you’re looking for in order to find it.
