The wild rose was designated the floral emblem of Alberta in 1930. The diverse landscape includes mountains, glaciers, foothills, lakes, rivers, forests, badlands, wetlands and open plains. Mountains and foothills make up the western boundary of the province and include nearly half of the southwest corner of Alberta. Alberta is a landlocked province bordered by the Northwest Territories to the north, Saskatchewan to the east, the US state of Montana to the south and British Columbia across the western border of the Rocky Mountains. Alberta is a western province of Canada. It's famous for its sunshine, mountains, open spaces, forests and fresh air. COVID-19 slows population growth. As of July 1, 2021, Alberta’s population was 4,442,879. It is Canada's fourth most populous province and the most populous of Canada's three prairie provinces. Alberta's capital, Edmonton, is near the geographic centre of the province and is the primary supply and service hub for Canada's crude oil, the Athabasca oil sands and other northern resource industries. About 290 km (180 mi) south of the capital is Calgary, the largest city in Alberta. Calgary and Edmonton, both have populations exceeding one million.
