What services are paid for by the Alberta child health benefit plan?

The Alberta Child Health Benefit plan pays for: Dental Care: Includes dental exams, teeth cleaning, X-rays, filling and extractions. Eye Glasses: Eye exams and a new pair of eye glasses or one repair each year. Prescription Drugs: Many, but not all, prescription drugs are paid for by this health plan. Some over-the-counter products, such as children's vitamins are also covered. Your family doctor or pharmacist has a list of items covered under this health benefit plan. Ambulance Services: Emergency ambulance trips to the nearest hospital. Diabetic Supplies: Include injection supplies, testing strips, lancets and penlets.

If your child needs a service that is not on this list, you may still have to pay some of the expense. Talk to your doctor, dentist, optician or pharmacist if you are unsure whether a service is paid for by this health benefit plan.

How long does the Alberta child health benefit plan pay for services?

Every June, the Alberta government will confirm if your household income meets the qualifying income level for your family size. If it does, your child will be automatically enrolled each year until he or she turns 20. Children over 18 must be still living at home and attending high school (up to grade 12). What if my children have health care coverage through another plan?

If your children get services through another health plan, you must use that plan first. The Alberta Child Health Benefit plan can cover your remaining costs. Talk to your doctor, dentist, optician or pharmacist about how this works.

Who is not eligible for the Alberta child health benefit plan?

These government programs include: • Income Support •Alberta Adult Health Benefit • Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH) • Child and Youth Support Program • Refugees sponsored by the federal government or covered by federal health benefits • Canadian government programs for people with Indian or Inuit status

The Alberta Child and Family Benefit

The Alberta Child and Family Benefit (ACFB) provides direct financial assistance to lower and middle-income families with children under 18.

Beginning in July 2020, the Alberta Child Benefit (ACB) and the Alberta Family Employment Tax Credit (AFETC) are being consolidated into a single program, the new Alberta Child and Family Benefit (ACFB), with the first payment issued in August 2020. The new ACFB provides more benefits to lower-income Albertans and streamlines administration.

To be eligible for the ACFB, you must:

• be a parent of one or more children under 18 • be a resident of Alberta • file a tax return • meet the income criteria

ACFB payments are not taxable. If you receive Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH), Income Support or the Alberta child care subsidy, you are still eligible to receive the ACFB. Receiving the ACFB will not affect your eligibility for these programs.
