Message from the Chair

Can you believe we are already at the end of 2024? This year has sure flown by. When I became the Chair of the Board of the Greater Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce in October, I challenged all of us to take stock of where our city has been, where we are and where we want to go. I think December is a good time for us to do the same for our personal and professional lives. Let’s reflect on where we’ve been, celebrate our 2024 wins and set ambitious goals for 2025. By doing this now, we can enter the new year with a renewed sense of purpose and determination.

Speaking of the new year, the 100th South Dakota Legislative Session will open in Pierre on January 14, 2025. As in years past, this Centennial Session will be one to watch. In this issue, we have provided you with the annual guide to the legislators that represent the Sioux Falls area. I encourage you to take this opportunity to learn more about your local legislators.

As I conclude, please indulge me on a personal note. In this issue is PREMIER’s Milestone Anniversary employee recognition ad. We are celebrating 99 employees who have been with the company for 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 years. We’re very proud of these employees and grateful for their longevity. We’ve always said PREMIER’s greatest asset is our people. I hope you feel the same about your teams and take the opportunity this month to thank them for their hard work.

Be proud of what we have built in Sioux Falls! It will take all of us working together to keep pushin’ on to move our community forward.

I hope you have the chance to really slow down and take in the magic of the season. Savor this time with family and friends. You won’t regret it.

Happy Holidays!

Member Anniversaries

Congratulations to these businesses that have achieved milestone anniversaries of their Chamber membership. These milestones represent a continued commitment to building our community through their investment in the Greater Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce.

Previewing the state legislative session

As we head into the holiday season, the policy team at the Greater Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce starts gearing up for the start of the South Dakota Legislative Session. The 100th South Dakota Legislative Session begins on January 14, when the Governor delivers the State of the State address. In the days following, legislators will begin to drop bills and start debating countless issues that impact our state.

Each year, there are typically between 400 and 600 pieces of legislation introduced between the House and Senate. The Chamber’s policy team reviews each piece of legislation and evaluates which bills will have an impact on South Dakota’s business community. While the Chamber cannot predict every single bill or topic that will be addressed during each legislative session, we can speculate on a few topics that will be addressed.

The

Chamber’s policy

team reviews each piece of legislation and evaluates which bills will have an impact on South Dakota’s business community.

During last summer, the legislature formed a handful of interim committees to continue discussions on issues that came up during the 2024 Legislative Session. One of these committees met to discuss property tax assessment methodology so that members could take a deeper look at how the state assesses and evaluates property, and the methodology used to assess tax on it. We will likely see a few pieces of legislation that look to tweak some aspects of this process.

Another legislative interim committee was focused on both artificial intelligence and regulating internet access to minors. Testimony was given from social media companies and other stakeholders on both issues. We expect to see at least one piece of legislation come from this interim committee that will address internet safety for minors.

One issue that the Chamber plans to address again this year is funding for infrastructure improvements and expansion at the Sioux Falls Regional Airport. Last year, $10 million in grant funds were appropriated to assist airports across South Dakota with infrastructure projects. This year, we will again look to secure funding for these projects to continue to invest in South Dakota’s critical airport infrastructure.

As the session progresses, you can keep up with what the Chamber policy team is working on by checking our Bill Tracker each week. Additionally, at the end of every week you can get a recap of the happenings in the State Capitol by reading the Chamber Advocate email. If there are any pieces of legislation you are interested in or have questions about the Chamber’s stance on issues, please reach out to our policy team!

A Strategic Shift Furniture Mission Finds New Home

Following the success of their Community Appeals Campaign from April 1 to July 31, 2022, Furniture Mission recently embarked on a new path to secure a long-term home. They initially planned to build a 27,000-square-foot facility on the Empower Campus, but updated construction estimates came in between $8-11 million—well beyond the pre-pandemic budget of $5-7 million—with an appraised value of only $6.8 million. A new plan was needed to make better use of the funds raised.

“It was clear we needed to find an option that would allow us to stay focused on our mission without stretching resources too thin,” said Janean Michalov, executive director of Furniture Mission.

In August, they found an ideal solution: a centrally located 24,000-square-foot property at 800 S. Van Eps. “This location checks all the boxes and aligns with the original goals of our campaign,” Michalov said. “It not only offers a great fit in terms of size and accessibility for clients, but it is in a central Sioux Falls location with great visibility and remains close to other nonprofits.”

The new facility will also include four loading docks, which will significantly improve the organization’s operational efficiency.

Thanks to the generosity of their supporters, Furniture Mission had already raised the needed $2.5 million to fund the purchase debt-free, paying cash for both the building and an adjacent house that will be converted to parking.

“It is important we move the home to be upcycled for another family,” Michalov added.

The organization’s two current buildings and the land at the Empower Campus are now on the market, with proceeds from these sales expected to fully cover renovation costs for the Van Eps property.

The Greater Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce, the Community Appeals Committee and many dedicated supporters and volunteers have all helped Furniture Mission move forward in this new direction. With initial work already underway, Furniture Mission plans to open their new facility by June 2025, where they will continue to serve the community.

Development Foundation launches

“Wish You Were Here” campaign Campaign aimed at bringing former residents back home

As workforce development continues to be a top priority for Sioux Falls, the Sioux Falls Development Foundation is shifting its strategy to tap into an often-overlooked resource—former residents. This fall, the Foundation launched a new campaign aimed at encouraging individuals who have relocated away from the area to return home.

The “Wish You Were Here” campaign, unveiled in early November, marks a pivot from the Foundation’s previous efforts to recruit talent from outside the region. Instead, the campaign focuses on tapping into the Sioux Falls community itself—encouraging residents to reconnect with family and friends who may have moved elsewhere, and invite them to return to the growing city.

The campaign highlights the many reasons Sioux Falls is an attractive place to live, from its high quality of life and robust business environment to its affordable living, safety and friendly atmosphere. Messaging across print, digital and video platforms emphasizes the benefits of living near family in a welcoming community.

In an effort to boost engagement, the Foundation is also offering a $1,000 Downtown Sioux Falls gift card to one lucky participant. To enter the giveaway, people can visit the campaign’s website or use a QR code featured in the ads.

By shifting the focus inward, the Sioux Falls Development Foundation hopes to capitalize on the growing need for skilled workers while fostering a sense of pride and connection among those who have moved away. For many, it’s an opportunity to not only return to a familiar place, but also to be part of a city that continues to grow and evolve.

For more information, or to enter the giveaway, visit siouxfalls.com/giveaway.

Ads like the one pictured above will run on print, digital and video platforms in hopes of attracting former residents to return and work in Sioux Falls.

Holiday data disasters

Why tossing out your old devices could be a costly mistake

The holiday season is a busy time for everyone—especially for businesses. You’re juggling year-end sales, managing seasonal staff, and maybe even upgrading your office tech to hit the ground running in 2025. But here’s a question: when was the last time you thought about what happens to all those old laptops, routers, or hard drives you’re replacing?

If the answer is “not recently,” you’re not alone. However, improperly disposing of old devices can open up your business to some serious data risks. Here are three real-life stories that show why securely managing your old technology is just as important as hitting your year-end goals.

A financial giant’s $60 million mistake (2020)

Picture this: You’re a major financial institution, trusted by millions of customers to protect their sensitive information. But when you upgrade your systems, you rely on a vendor to dispose of your old hardware. Months later, you find out those old hard drives—with unencrypted customer data—ended up being sold at

public auctions. Sound far-fetched? That’s exactly what happened to a large U.S. financial services company in 2020, leading to a $60 million fine. If it can happen to a big player like them, it can happen to any business.

A school district’s auction oversight (2022)

Now, let’s zoom in on a more familiar scenario. A school district, much like the ones here in South Dakota, auctions off old computers to make space for new ones. What they didn’t realize was that some of the devices still had sensitive student and staff data on them. In 2022, this very mistake occurred when a Texas school district sold over 3,500 devices. At least 11 of them were later found to contain personal information, leaving the district scrambling to address the fallout.

Small businesses selling their secrets (2023)

Think this only happens to big organizations? Think again. Earlier this year, cybersecurity researchers bought used routers from small businesses that had recycled them. More than half of those routers still contained sensitive data—think corporate login details, VPN credentials, and even encryption keys. These small businesses likely thought they were being responsible by selling their old tech, but in reality, they put themselves at risk for a major data breach.

Why the holidays are prime time for data slip-ups

It’s easy to overlook proper device disposal, especially during the hectic holiday season. But this is exactly when your business is most vulnerable. Here’s why:

• Year-end upgrades: It’s common to refresh your tech before the new year. But what happens to your old computers, hard drives, and routers? If they’re not wiped or destroyed, sensitive data could be left behind.

• Temporary staff: Many businesses bring on extra help during the holidays. If these seasonal workers are using devices that aren’t properly tracked or securely wiped afterward, it’s a recipe for trouble.

• Trusting the wrong vendor: Handing off your old tech to a vendor might seem convenient, but not all vendors follow strict data security protocols. As the financial giant’s example shows, not all third-party vendors can be trusted to handle sensitive information properly.

How to protect your business

Before you toss out your old devices or hand them over to someone else, here’s what you can do to protect your business:

• Partner with certified providers: Make sure the company handling your old tech follows strict standards for wiping or destroying data. Look for certifications like NAD AAA, R2 and/ or e-Stewards, these show they take data security seriously.

• Create a disposal plan: Have a policy in place for securely disposing of old devices. Don’t wait until year-end when things get hectic and mistakes are more likely to happen.

• Audit your inventory: Know what devices your business uses and where they’re going when they’re no longer needed. It’s easier to prevent data breaches if you keep track of your technology.

The holiday season should be a time to celebrate your business’s successes, not worry about the possibility of a costly data breach. By staying proactive and ensuring your old devices are securely disposed of, you can protect your business and start the new year on the right foot.

Why did you choose to build your career in Sioux Falls?

As our company continues to grow and expand, there are a lot of opportunities ahead of us. 2

What is a piece of advice you’ve received that has served you well?

Over the years I have had a lot of great mentors and have received a lot of great advice. Something that has stuck with me and served me well is do not shy away from being uncomfortable. It is when we put ourselves in those uncomfortable situations that we can grow.

3

How would you describe Sioux Falls to people who don’t live here?

Sioux Falls is captivating. It is one of the largest cities I have lived in, but still has a small-town feel. The community is extraordinarily inviting and welcoming. There are endless opportunities for entertainment for all ages. Overall, it is a great place to live and raise a family.

4

What is one community or non-profit organization that you support? Tell us about it and why it is important to you.

There are a lot of organizations that I enjoy and look forward to being a part of. One of my favorites is our Toy Drive. It is one of Les Schwab’s signature events in every community I have been in I enjoy doing what I can to make it a success. It is an amazing feeling to know that we can help bring joy to local children.

What cold-weather activity are you looking forward to this winter?

With winter approaching, one of my favorite things to do is load the family and dogs in my truck with snacks and drinks and go for a long drive on snowy roads until we find a spot where we can all get out of the truck and let some energy out playing in the snow. It is great family time and for me, driving in the snow is peaceful.
