MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

Foster connections to encourage growth for the future Each April, the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce celebrates our Young Professionals Network (YPN). Launched in 2009, the program now boasts nearly 1,000 members. It is so encouraging to see the large number of active and engaged young professionals. Look around... Sioux Falls is full of young people who are stepping out, stepping up and leading the way. We can be confident that our community will have strong leadership and active, engaged citizenry for years to come.

DAVE KAPASKA, D.O. 2016-17 Chair of the Board

We must all continue to work together to build our next generation of leadership.

Early in my career, I benefitted from experienced leaders who took the time to invest in my professional development. Mentorship, whether formal or informal, is a powerful tool in nurturing our workforce. Sometimes all that is needed is a simple act—an invitation to participate in a volunteering opportunity or encouragement to attend a professional development event. We must all continue to work together to build our next generation of leadership. Perhaps you or someone you know could benefit from a better understanding of how federal policy can impact your business. This month, I invite you to learn more about what is happening in our nation’s capital and how it may affect your business here in South Dakota. John Kirchner of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce will share his inside perspective at our Good Morning Sioux Falls breakfast on April 27. Our volunteer Ambassadors and their associates wrapped up their annual spring membership drive April 3. I thank them for their efforts to invite new businesses to participate in bettering our community through Chamber membership. The drive may be over, but it is never too late to join! I encourage you to talk to your colleagues and clients… share with them why you choose to be a Chamber member and invite them to consider membership for themselves. When you invite others to participate, you are helping facilitate connections that will strengthen our workforce. We have seen over and over that connections can be the foundation for new ideas, new initiatives and the betterment of our community as a whole. Thank you for encouraging others to get engaged!

IN DEVELOPMENT

Young professionals pursue growth opportunities BY JENNIE DOYEN

Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce

The Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce launched the Young Professionals Network (YPN) in 2009 in response to demand from the community. Today, YPN has grown to nearly 1,000 members who have opportunities to participate in a variety of events, ranging from social to developmental. The goal from the outset was to engage the next generation of leaders and to help young professionals develop the skills they need to succeed in their chosen profession or occupation. YPN seeks to introduce members to the region’s resources and possibilities, create business opportunities, support civic involvement and promote an overall investment in the future of the community. YPN serves members from a variety of backgrounds and professions. With members ranging in age from 21 to 39, some individuals are just getting started in their careers while others have already assumed leadership roles within their company. There is no uniform process for developing these young leaders, so YPN offers a variety of professional development programming, ranging from peer mentoring, to group workshops, to the biennial Crossroads Summit conference.

CONSISTENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR GROWTH The responsibility for creating ongoing development programming falls to the YPN Personal & Professional Development (P&PD) Action Team. The team meets every other month for planning sessions, and is led by co-chairs Brittany Kelley Elsasser, MetaBank, and Christopher Filsinger, CorTrust Bank. “Our focus is to provide opportunities to members that help further their career aspirations, develop and strengthen their professional relationships, and inform them about the issues and unique aspects to this great community that we live in,” said Filsinger. “I want to make sure that our members get value out of their experience and that they are able to take what they have learned and tie it to their own development,” Elsasser stated. “We want our members to come out of our events feeling inspired and be able to apply what they learned in their personal and professional lives.” Filsinger said that every development event provides something different and unique to further an individual’s professional development. One of the most popular events is A Seat chambernews.com | Chamber News  27

at the Table, in which an established community leader shares the story of their professional journey with a small group of members. Attendees have the opportunity to ask questions and learn from the leader’s experiences. Several YPN members refer to A Seat at the Table as a not-to-be-missed event. Alexis Konstant, Lloyd Companies, said she appreciates the comfortable atmosphere of the events and the willingness of the leaders to speak openly about the challenges and opportunities they faced in their careers. “The discussions at these events have been frank, insightful, and from my perspective, very rewarding,” said Chris Daugaard, Ernst Capital Group. Focus Workshops are another valuable development tool for many young professionals. “Many workshop topics have been relevant to current opportunities and challenges for our company,” said Daugaard. “I have to hand it to the Chamber for offering so many sessions that seek to answer the questions that we’re asking in our business on a day-to-day basis.” Other regular P&PD team programming includes Community Connections tours and Our Sioux Falls events. Both of these offer attendees a chance to learn more about a piece of Sioux Falls they might not otherwise have been exposed to. Building awareness of the various industries, nonprofits, projects and events in the area allows young professionals to gain a greater appreciation for the diverse fabric of our community as a whole.

28  Chamber News | APRIL 2017

“The events offer great opportunities to expand your professional network, develop new skills, and learn more about our community.” — Tyler Tschetter, Thrivent Financial A recent Our Sioux Falls event featured Joe Millar of the Sioux Falls Sports Authority discussing everything that goes into securing and hosting the NCAA basketball tournament in Sioux Falls. Millar detailed the bid process and the number of people and organizations that work together to make the tournament successful. He also explained the economic impact that hosting these events has on our local economy and why supporting future bids can have a long-term impact on our region. Many YPN members say that while they might personally benefit from learning about the business practices or activities of another company, the most valuable part of these events is that they shine a light on the bigger picture for Sioux Falls. Becoming a more educated and informed citizen is key to creating future leaders who will continue to invest in the community. Konstant said, “The opportunities to learn more about the Sioux Falls community has influenced my current career state and will only encourage a better tomorrow.”

COVER STORY “If you are willing to take the time to participate, listen & learn from your group members I believe you will find the experience to be enriching.” — Nick Rickert, The First National Bank in Sioux Falls PEER MENTORING In 2014 the YPN facilitated a mentoring pilot program. Small groups of YPN members were matched with a community leader outside the YPN demographic. They were to meet quarterly for one year. While there was no set curriculum, each group had a specific focus: leadership development, professional growth, business insights and networking and community and civic involvement. Based on feedback from that pilot year, YPN leadership chose to restructure the program into the peer-led model that is used today. Currently, there are four small groups meeting once a month, each led by a current YPN member.

Other mentors include Tara Allen, Allen Edge Real Estate Team at Keller Williams Realty; Dan Menke, Pride Neon; and Amber Schwiesow, Midco. The mentors worked with YPN staff to create a curriculum for the year on the topics of building relationships, problem solving, emotional intelligence, and mindset. Mentors spend between 2-4 hours a month preparing for the sessions.

Nick Bentele, a business banker at The First National Bank in Sioux Falls, is one of the mentors. He said he volunteered to serve as a mentor as a way to invest in others. “I’ve benefitted greatly from the investment that others have made in me,” Bentele said. “It’s important to leave a legacy of giving back and helping to develop others.”

Schwiesow shared that in addition to prep work, she also completes all of the same work she requires of her mentees. “I want to make sure we are all on the same page, and if I expect them to do something, I am going to show the commitment and do it myself too. It has been great and has helped me personally and professionally.”

Michelle Klobassa, TSP Inc., Erica Anderson, MetaBank, and Tara Allen, Allen Edge Real Estate Team at Keller Williams Realty, meet regularly to work on professional development as part of the YPN peer mentoring program.

COVER STORY

Bentele agreed that serving as a mentor has also benefited him personally. “Mentoring forces you to be mindful of those around you and notice others in a way that isn’t always natural,” he said. “It develops the habit of caring for others and finding creative ways to help them succeed. I’ve found that mentoring has helped me be more mindful of my relationships at home and at work.” For the mentee participants, the program is an opportunity to challenge themselves professionally and to become more deeply involved in YPN and the broader community. Mentee Bill DeNet said that his employer, Tessier’s Inc. Mechanical Contractors, has a lot of great internal resources for development, but he wanted to explore an external option in the hopes of bringing back new ideas to his company. “This program seemed like a way to investigate those options while networking with like-minded, young leaders in Sioux Falls,” he added. DeNet said it has been interesting to compare leadership perspectives within his mentor group, and that he has specifically benefitted from additional exposure to LEAN decision making, a process that Tessier’s uses in construction.

A SIGNATURE EVENT The idea for the Crossroads Summit conference emerged from the original YPN steering committee. They envisioned an event that would function as a platform for YPN members

to form connections and deepen their professional development without leaving Sioux Falls. Held every two years, the Crossroads Summit has become the signature event of the YPN. Past speakers have included former first daughter Jenna Bush Hager, Next Generation Consulting founder Rebecca Ryan, and former HarleyDavidson communications director Ken Schmidt. Melanie Rapp has attended all three past conferences and plans to attend the next one later this summer. She believes almost anyone can benefit from attending the event – whether the attendee is trying to advance his or her career, or improve a specific aspect of their personal or professional life. “The Summit is a great opportunity to get rejuvenated by motivational speakers, learn something new by taking a session that you haven’t before, and meet other people that are go-getters and want to prosper,” said Rapp. The fourth Summit is planned for August 17, 2017 at the Sioux Falls Convention Center with the theme “Living Your Mission.” Keynote speakers John Meyer, Lemonly, and Bert Jacobs, Life is Good, will discuss the responsibility that businesses have in contributing to community and the value in working for something greater than your daily responsibilities. Maggie Groteluschen, The First National Bank in Sioux Falls, and Reggie Kuipers, Bender Commercial Real Estate, are serving as co-chairs for the 2017 Summit. They point to the veteran business leaders in the Sioux Falls area as inspiration for this year’s theme.

“Being that I am new to South Dakota and the Midwest, it has been crucial for me to establish and build relationships within the community, whether they are professional or personal. Joining YPN has been a great opportunity for me.” — Rhiannon Israel, McCrossan Boys Ranch “We have all these wonderful role models who have demonstrated the importance of investing in your community, and Sioux Falls is stronger for it,” Groteluschen said. “We feel that this is an important message to lift up and share with the next generation of professionals.” A new feature of the conference this year will be a CEO Panel. Four local business leaders will share their professional experiences and perspective in a moderated discussion. They are: Anne McFarland, President & CEO, LifeScape; Jeff Scherschlight, CEO of Howalt+McDowell Insurance; Eric Yunag, VP Strategic Initiatives, Convergint Technologies; and Bill Baker, Chairman & CEO, The First National Bank in Sioux Falls. In addition, organizers expect to have over 20 breakout sessions for attendees to choose from – these will be finalized in the near future. The Crossroads Summit is geared toward young professionals, but is open to anyone. Tickets are $99 for the full day and registration is open now at sfcrossroads.com.

BUILDING COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS Young professionals around the country are seeking out ways to grow and engage in their communities. In Sioux Falls, the Young Professionals Network provides an avenue that connects the need for individual professional growth with community-focused engagement opportunities. Steering committee member Paige Pearson Meyer, Midco, summarized the benefits of YPN this way: “There’s great value in being a YPN member. First, it connects you with people in the professional community. Second, it exposes you to people and industries you might not be as familiar with. Third, there’s an educational component to YPN’s programming, and I think that’s the organization’s greatest strength.” Combine strong development programming with the network and relationship-building aspects that YPN offers, and the result is a valuable tool that connects young professionals, helps them grow in their careers, builds strong leaders and ultimately benefits the entire Sioux Falls community.

PERSONAL & PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES The YPN has made providing quality personal and professional development opportunities to members a priority. A variety of events and programs are offered to meet the needs of young professionals at all stages of their personal and professional life. OUR SIOUX FALLS Learn more about the community where you live and work through programs that give details behind major infrastructure projects and issues impacting your quality of life. A SEAT AT THE TABLE Prominent business and community leaders in the Sioux Falls area share their professional journey with a small group of YPN members. Ask questions, listen and engage in a casual conversation with leaders in our community. FOCUS WORKSHOPS Experts in their field share insight on direct, focused topics that address issues young professionals encounter in daily life. Topics range from personal to professional and conceptual to practical. COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS TOURS Get an inside look at a company or project in the Sioux Falls area by touring their facility. CROSSROADS SUMMIT This biennial event for young professionals brings topnotch keynote speakers, valuable breakout sessions and plenty of networking opportunities for young professionals from across the region. Registration for the 2017 Summit is open now at sfcrossroads.com. TOPICS ON TAP These events are organized by YPN and the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with other community organizations. BUSINESS ADVOCACY

Broad issues dominated the 2017 Legislative Session

Task forces to continue work in the summer months In recent years, we’ve seen big sweeping issues that have somewhat defined the legislature for a given session. In 2015, we strongly supported a new funding bill for road and bridge infrastructure. Why? We know that commerce depends on an effective and efficient transportation infrastructure. Indeed, it is what gets raw materials into the state, products throughout and out of the state and even enables our workforce to travel safely. The highway and bridge funding bill dominated the 2015 session and it was successfully passed.

MARK LEE

Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce

the Legislature did a good job of stewardship with respect to our resources

In 2016, we strongly supported a significant increase in funding for K-12 education for the purpose of significantly increasing teacher salaries. We believed that South Dakota’s standing as last in the nation for teacher salaries was a strategic threat and needed to be addressed. Nothing is more important to our state and community than an outstanding K-12 system and its ability to help us attract and prepare our workforce and help kids achieve their potential. This topic dominated the 2016 session and was successfully passed. In the near future, we will be analyzing the impact of both of these bills, but for now we are focused on a recap of the 2017 Legislative Session. So, what were the defining issues of the 2017 session?

A RETROSPECTIVE On the morning of Nov. 8, 2016 our Chamber was still convinced that Medicaid expansion and the state budget would be the biggest issues in the upcoming session. In fact, the Governor had been touring the state to pitch his Medicaid plan and was preparing the groundwork. We also had been watching revenues for the City of Sioux Falls and were convinced that shortfalls were on the way. On the morning of Nov. 9, 2016 our Chamber was convinced that Medicaid expansion was likely off the table and the newly and surprisingly passed IM 22 would be a major focus of the upcoming session. We still believed budget issues would also be at the fore. On Dec. 6, 2016 the Governor confirmed the revenue and budget challenges facing the state and on Dec. 8, 2016, Judge Mark Barnett stayed the implementation of IM 22. That was not the last word on budget, however, as the revenue numbers continued to fall behind the revised estimates and the hole in both the current fiscal year and the next fiscal year grew. The stage was set.

IM 22 FALLOUT As a Chamber, we joined a number of organizations opposing IM 22 at the ballot box in November. Unfortunately it passed with 51.6% of the vote. Even though it passed, we continued to believe many of its provisions were unconstitutional and others were completely unworkable. That opinion was supported by a circuit judge ruling staying the law and supporting the constitutional objections. This caused the introduction of HB 1069 which served as a complete repeal of IM 22 and included some new campaign finance rules. We supported HB 1069 and it passed mainly on party lines. With IM 22 repealed a number of measures were introduced to address components of the law. A few of them survived the process: • HB 1073 rewrote the lobbyist gift provisions of IM 22 into a workable and acceptable form. We never opposed restrictions, but we opposed the original language for its unintended draconian consequences. • HB 1076 created a state government accountability board comprised of four retired judges. • SB 27 defines what constitutes a public official, what a criminal conflict of interest is, and outlines the sentence for a convicted offender. • SB 54, in its final form, amended HB 1069 and established new provisions for campaign finance reform. • SB 151 created a complaint procedure to resolve allegations of misconduct by public officials. • SB 171 created a government accountability task force to study government, campaign finance, lobbyist restrictions and ethics. The Chamber will actively follow the work of the task force created by SB 171.

INITIATIVE AND REFERENDUM PROCESSES On the heels of a long and messy Nov. 8 ballot that included 10 initiated and referred measures, many believed some level of reform to our process was needed. Everyone defended the ability for the people to put measures on the ballot, but many questioned the ease of doing so, the information provided to the voter and the impact of out-of-state interests and money on state policy in South Dakota. As a Chamber, we are interested in these topics as well. There were bills introduced to change signature requirements, to change the process for constitutional amendments, to require enhanced ballot measure funding disclosures and to limit out-of-state money on ballot measures. By session end, three bills survived and we supported all three of them. • HB 1141 creates a task force to consider legislation to revise the initiative and referendum processes in South Dakota. • SB 59 changes the effective date on an initiated measure, constitutional amendment or referred law to July 1 following the general election. • SB 77 requires a fiscal note for an initiated measure or constitutional amendment so voters know the impact on state costs or revenues. Much like the task force on accountability in SB 171, the Chamber will actively follow and monitor the work of the task force created by HB 1141.

STATE GENERAL FUND BUDGET As reported above and throughout session, every new revenue estimate the Legislature received demonstrated that the hole was getting bigger. Our legislature’s first and most important job each session is to pass a balanced budget and they take that responsibility seriously. It would take pages and pages to detail all the changes that were made to balance the budget, so we will only hit upon a few items as final outcomes. The announcement that Amazon would begin collecting and remitting sales tax revenues for sales delivered to South Dakotans was welcome news. However, it was difficult to estimate the impact to the budget for FY 18. In the end, estimates were baked into the budget numbers, but a lack of historic information challenges the assumptions in the numbers. That is not a criticism at all, but simply a fact. Next, many continue to lament the fortunes of our agriculture industry in South Dakota for the foreseeable future. We kept hearing a number of legislators identify 2020 as the projected year for commodity and livestock prices to reflect renewed strength in our state’s revenues. That remains to be seen. As the process was winding down, the Legislature did a few positive things in the budget. First, they agreed to a .3 percent increase in funding for healthcare provider inflation and for K-12 funding. The Governor had originally recommended one percent, but that was pulled from the table when revenues continued to decline. It was at zero percent most of the session. In addition, a small amount was included for state employee health insurance cost increase offset. State employees will not receive a raise this year, but this move was intended to keep them whole. This is a very simple summary of a very complex financial situation and our thanks to our Appropriators who worked on the budget from day one through the last day.

CONCLUSION It bears restating, but the above mentioned issues certainly were not the only important issues our Legislature dealt with this year. In particular, we applaud our leaders for SB 65 to create a new state-level Board of Technical Education. We believe this will have long-term positive impacts on this important workforce development asset in our state. We also thank those who helped us defeat a couple of measures that were discriminatory in nature and not reflective of the values and diversity of our community. All in all, we believe the Legislature did a good job of stewardship with respect to our resources and, in general, did a good job on substantive policy related issues. We thank them for their work and soon we will be considering what issues will face the 2018 Legislature. It always comes around very quickly.

Infrastructure development underway at USD Discovery District The USD Discovery District, an 80-acre contemporary corporate and academic research park under development in Sioux Falls, has awarded the contract for its initial infrastructure construction. A bid of $1.214 million from Runge Enterprises, Inc. of Sioux Falls was selected. The project includes 2,800 feet, of the anticipated 11,000 feet, of roads, water and sewer that will allow for the first buildings on the site. Construction is expected to begin in April. “This is an exciting initial milestone for the USD Discovery District,” said Rich Naser, Jr., President of the USD Discovery District. “It marks the start of physical construction–the result of years of planning–and the first step in creating an open and urban innovation environment in which to live, work and play.” The roads being constructed, West Nobel Street and North Frances Avenue will provide the foundation of the urban landscape creating the “main” street and intersection for the entrance for the District. In addition, these streets open access to eight building sites. The Discovery District intends to lease one of those sites within the development for construction of a multi-story hotel. Creating accommodations and amenities for visitors will complement the planned urban environment and enhance the District’s ability to support its research, education and business tenants. “With the continued growth of northwest Sioux Falls – there’s a real opportunity here,” said Naser. “It’s a great location with quick access to Interstate 29, the airport and a direct route to downtown; right on the edge of the city. We want to build on that momentum and keep it going.” The planned innovation community, adjacent to University Center in northwest Sioux Falls, will provide access to research facilities and infrastructure for research business development, which will create new jobs and foster collaboration for the commercialization of new technologies. When fully developed, it will include an estimated 26 privately-developed buildings with facility construction value exceeding $314M and nearly 2,800 people employed by companies located in the District.

The USD Discovery District is a public-private partnership effort between the University of South Dakota, the Governor’s Office of Economic Development, the City of Sioux Falls, the Board of Regents and the business community through Forward Sioux Falls. Infrastructure development is being funded in part by a $755,000 matching grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA). Forward Sioux Falls and the University of South Dakota are providing local funds for the match through a 2014 general fund appropriation.

MEMBER VOICE

The power of space and technology in attracting and retaining millennials In a city where the unemployment rate hovers around 2 percent, hiring managers are facing an increasingly difficult challenge to attract new employees to their organization. This shrinking talent pool has put managers in a reactive state when trying to fill holes in their organizations. To solve this staffing crisis facing our community, managers need to look to the future of the workforce – Millennials.

JAMES GASPAR

Interstate Office Products

In the war for talent, engagement is a key factor.

The cost of vacancies in an organization is not only felt by its members – in covering tasks, overtime, and working in areas outside of their expertise – but it is also felt in the bottom line. The dollars invested in advertising, recruiting, overtime, onboarding, and training take away from the organization’s profit potential. When organizations have high turnover, these costs add up and can severely impact their ability to make money. To combat these costs, organizations need to look for new methods to attract and retain Millennial workers. Hiring managers may try to bolster their attractiveness to prospective employees by offering higher starting salaries, signing bonuses, and comprehensive benefits packages, but they often overlook an important factor in attracting talent – creating a satisfying workplace. Research has shown that employees with high workplace satisfaction tend to be the most highly engaged. While we are often considered “entitled,” Millennials are truly seeking a workplace where we can feel at home and part of something greater than ourselves. We want to be in a workplace where we feel we are valued by our employers, and employers need to take steps to ensure they can attract the best new workers to their organization. In the war for talent, engagement is a key factor. Millennials aren’t always swayed by higher compensation, but by having a work environment where we can feel both comfortable and productive. Do Millennials want to work in your space? There are many ways employers can create an attractive environment for workers. Provide technology and space solutions that give the employee the comfort of their home with the structure of the workplace. In our increasingly mobile world, more workers are operating from laptops, smartphones, and tablets than ever before. These technologies allow employees to work in more spaces than the traditional cubicles that may turn-off Millennials to your organization. Lounge spaces, conference rooms, and the break room table will become the new home for many of these young people looking to escape their desks. Rather than fighting mobile workers, employers should look to embrace and encourage movement around the workplace and into new work areas that don’t exist in the traditional office environment. Employers should create multi-function work areas that allow for individual and collaborative work to be done. These spaces can be owned by one team, or shared with whoever operates in that area of the building. Millennials crave the freedom to move from place to place; rather than letting us move on to another employer, employers need to take every step they can to encourage us to stick around. By creating a workspace where employees feel at home, employers can succeed at attracting and retaining young workers. Retaining these workers will lead to higher productivity and better profit margins for the organization over the course of their employment, and ultimately lead to a better bottom line. CHAMBER PARTNER

Partnerships today produce results for tomorrow There is much to be proud of in the Sioux Falls region. Careful planning, a diversified economy, and engaged community leaders have contributed to the outstanding strength of Sioux Falls and the surrounding communities. We engage stakeholders in decision-making and reach out to one another to form connections. The Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce continues to work closely with area chambers such as the Hartford Area Chamber of Commerce to move the region forward. Partnerships are a driving force behind the success of the Sioux Falls area. JESSE FONKERT

Hartford Area Development Corporation

…we understand that growth is not a zerosum game

Chambers of commerce and economic development corporations are important partners in creating a thriving economy. The decisions we make today and programs we put in place have the opportunity to stimulate success for tomorrow. Quality of life improvements, along with jobs, attract new people to this region every year. Each small step forward can produce tremendous results years down the road. This principle is evident on a regional level where the growth of Sioux Falls has benefited communities like Hartford, Brandon, and Harrisburg. Likewise, companies such as Central States Manufacturing in Hartford, Marmen Energy in Brandon, and Showplace Wood Products in Harrisburg employ people who live in Sioux Falls and commute out. We are all partners in progress. Hartford continues to grow in more ways than one. With a population of almost 3,200 and an average household income of $75,330, Hartford is quickly becoming a major contributor to the region’s economy. On a per capita basis, Hartford has had the largest growth rate the last two years in Minnehaha County. More than 200 residential lots will be open for development with the completion of the Mickelson Road project in 2018. Young families keep moving to Hartford to take advantage of the West Central school district and the quality education it offers. New businesses are opening and finding success due to our growing incomes and population. Foundations are being laid today that will produce returns for the community and region tomorrow. In economic and community development, we understand that growth is not a zero-sum game but that progress benefits everyone in some way, shape, or form. A new office building in one town can employ dozens if not hundreds of people from another town. It is important that we support one another and cheer for each other to succeed. Competition is healthy and each community has something different to offer but we must focus on the big picture “a rising tide lifts all boats.” We are stronger by working together through collaboration and shared resources. Projects like the USD Discovery District and Foundation Park will impact more than just Sioux Falls. These two projects alone have potential to significantly add to the growth of surrounding towns like Hartford, Crooks, and Dell Rapids. Thanks to the foresight of the partnership between the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce and Sioux Falls Development Foundation, many lives will be positively impacted. Going forward, we will not only continue to promote the characteristics that make Hartford unique but will also embrace regionalization as a whole. We’re all in this together. By communicating with one another, we can find different ways to work together to produce outcomes that positively impact the region. It takes you, me, and everyone working together to move the needle forward. The partnerships we create today, will produce results for tomorrow. FIVE QUESTIONS Five questions is a monthly feature on a Chamber volunteer, Chamber member or staff member. Want to be featured here? Call (605) 336-1620.

Five questions with Francisco Javier Alvarez-Evangelista Francisco Javier Alvarez-Evangelista is a Compliance Analyst at MetaBank, where he assists with the governance and administration of the bank’s anti-money laundering and OFAC sanctions compliance program. Alvarez-Evangelista graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in History from South Dakota State University in 2015. He is a Certified Financial Crime Specialist, and has been a member of the Sioux Falls Young Professional Network since 2016. Alvarez-Evangelista is a native of Mexico, and enjoys traveling, drawing, hiking, architecture, politics and reading the news.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT SIOUX FALLS? It has to be the very impressive economic growth of the city. Not only do I like all the new businesses and ideas sprouting throughout the community, but I am always impressed when I drive down an old road and encounter an entire new development or neighborhood that was not there months previous. It feels like we are living through an important part of the city’s history and its renaissance.

FRANCISCO JAVIER ALVAREZ-EVANGELISTA MetaBank

WHAT IS ONE OF SIOUX FALLS’ BEST-KEPT SECRETS? Most people wouldn’t consider Sioux Falls as being especially diverse in its restaurant choices. However, I’ve come to learn that I can find really good food from almost any corner of the planet within short driving distance, and that makes Sioux Falls a special exception for the Upper Midwest region.

WHAT IS THE BEST THING THE CHAMBER DOES FOR THE SIOUX FALLS AREA? It connects people and ideas, and then helps make those ideas into reality.

WHAT IS ONE NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION THAT YOU SUPPORT AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO YOU? I first learned of Junior Achievement from colleagues at work. Growing up, I had no idea such a national organization existed, so as I learned more about it, I wanted to help and do my part to accomplish its mission. Junior Achievement strives to provide quality, volunteer-led education courses to students K-12 that enhance financial literacy, work-readiness, and entrepreneurship. I’ve taught two classes in the last year in English and in Spanish at the Immersion School, and I feel like I am impacting the students by both bringing a different perspective to their regular education, and by introducing them to topics and concepts they may not hear of or learn of at home or outside their regular schooling. Kindling an interest and fascination in students’ career potential from such an early age lays the groundwork for their and their communities’ future successes.

WHAT IS THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU HAVE RECEIVED? No matter how tough things get, always remain loyal to your dreams and aspirations.

FROM THE ARCHIVES

As a membership organization with a history spanning more than a century, the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce has influenced progress across the community in a number of ways throughout the decades.

Young boys dressed in military uniforms play with their toy cannons near McKennan Park in 1917.

Old Courthouse Museum to open exhibit on World War I The Old Courthouse Museum will open a new exhibit on World War I this month. World War I: The Great War will use artifacts and photographs to tell the story of WWI both on the battlefield and the home front, with a particular section on the wartime impact in Minnehaha County. World War I brought technological advances and produced weapons that were deadlier than ever before. Developments in engineering, chemistry and metalworking created unmerciful conditions and saw a transition from animal power to machine power as the primary means of victory. Outside the war zone, the home front proved to be a vital artery in the war effort through its sacrifices and undying support of patriotism. During World War I, Nevis and Eva Fawick struggled to make ends meet by 54  Chamber News | APRIL 2017

selling Yankee Boy Cannons, a toy that was manufactured by the N. O. Fawick Manufacturing Company in Sioux Falls. While Mr. Fawick stayed at home to fill orders, Mrs. Fawick traveled the country, selling the toys to department and toy stores. The toys were soon were found in cities from Reno and San Antonio to Pittsburgh and Boston. Adding to the popularity of the toy was the “target” of German Kaiser Wilhelm II. Aggression during WWI made the Kaiser a symbol of all that was feared and despised about the war. The photo above was taken in 1917 after the U.S. entered the war. Arthur, Garfield and Clifford Muchow, dressed in uniforms, are playing with their Yankee Boy Cannons. The children are lying under a Fawick Flyer automobile, which is parked near McKennan Park.

The Yankee Boy Cannon was manufactured by N.O. Fawick Manufacturing Company in Sioux Falls. The toy became popular across the nation during World War I.

An opening reception for World War I: The Great War will be held on Thursday, April 6 from 5-7 p.m. at the Old Courthouse Museum. The public is invited to attend, and admission is free. The Old Courthouse Museum is free and open to the public seven days a week.
