by Mia Thomas Making an Impact in the Community with the Creative Writing Program Myrna Gale is the founder and CEO of 3G Publishing Inc. located in Atlanta, Georgia. 3G Publishing, Inc. is a specialty boutique publishing house. ‘3G Publishing Inc. has created a unique niche in the independent self-publishing world. A fast-growing boutique publishing company that encourages all age genres to utilize creativity, ideas, and dreams through journaling and writing.”

Myrna’s love for children inspired her to launch a publishing company that initially was focused on children in 2009. Since then 3G Publishing Inc. now serves individuals of all ages ranging from age 8 to 99. 5

Sistah’s Place Mar/Apr 2019 The inspiration that led Myrna to launch her own business was her personal experience in 2004 as a self-published author. She was dissatisfied with the publishing company hired to get her book out to the world. Myrna believed she could do a better job than them and give others the opportunity to tell their story. Myrna believes that whether a person is capable of expressing their thoughts, writing their thoughts down on paper, or not she felt that she could find a way to help them tell their story. What does 3G Publishing Inc. offer? 3G Publishing Inc. provides a variety of services, but one, in particular, is the Creative Writing Program that Myrna is very proud to bring to the community. The Creative Program is her desire to involve children as young as the age of five years old to publish their stories. In doing this, Myrna realized that many children who lived in less desirable communities in Georgia could not even read or write at a grade level appropriate for their age. Myrna says, “when writing is taught correctly, then those children can articulate their thoughts accordingly.” She decided to introduce the Creative Writing Program to the education system. By doing this, Gale gained entry to Parks and Recreation Centers, Senior Centers, Schools, and writing Boot Camps where individuals have enjoyed their new found writing skills. There are many Creative Writing Programs in Georgia; however, her program stands out from the rest because 3G Publishing creates authors out of every participant regardless of age. Myrna guarantees her clients that at the end of the collaboration they publish a book of their works and each participant receives a copy of their writing. Teaching children to write at a young age gives them a significant advantage and prepares them for writing from youth through their adult life. The writing program is a positive impact in communities that lack the resources to help advance the children and adults enabling them to learn how to write and express their thoughts. Myrna would like her impact to multiply the number of people in the community asserting themselves with their new found writing skills. Many times people are asked to write their congressional or government officials, but how can they do that if they don’t know how to express themselves through writing. Myrna offers new authors and those who aspire to be an author with three tips. First, you must know your demographics. Second, ask yourself who are you trying to reach? Third, sit down and create a budget before approaching an indie publishing company. Learn more about the Creative Writing Program by visiting their website at www.3gpublishinginc.com and contact them by phone at (888) 442-9637 to find out more information about their writing program.

5 Wearable SS19 Fashion Trends for the Office by Natonaya Medford

Do you hear the birds chirping? Can you feel the sunlight beaming through the cracks of your blinds? The leaves have grown back on the trees and the grass is green again. With the crisp morning breeze flowing in our hair, we instantly know spring has arrived. Spring is the season of renewal and fresh beginnings. As we take time to rediscover ourselves and explore our purpose in life, let’s rebuild our wardrobe.

According to ELLE Magazine, we all should wave goodbye to ruffles, leisure sportswear, and off-the-shoulder looks. Spring/Summer 2019 fashion trends welcome functionality, texture, structure, and pastel hues. Of course with Netflix’s summer return of the hit series Stranger Things, we cannot neglect our closet from reliving the 80s through vibrant pink suits and power shoulder blazers. 8

Sistah’s Place Mar/Apr 2019

We all know trendy runway styles from Moschino, Balmain, Escada, Dior, and R13 are not necessarily practical for the everyday woman. Sure we want to look like a model strutting down the aisles of the office but maybe not in an oversized tie-dye suit from Stella McCartney’s SS19 Ready-to-Wear collection. So how do we add the latest trends to our closets without breaking the bank and becoming a huge distraction at work? Simple, less is more! Anyone can look super trendy at the office; take advantage by styling your look with accessories. Accessorizing is an easy way to add a splash of texture, color, and print to your outfit. Want more ways to renew your wardrobe? Check out these top 5 wearable workwear trends from the SS19 runway. Structured Handbags Put your cross body bags back in the closet and pull out your top handle totes. Not only functional but the structure adds a new dimension to your outfit. Where to shop? https://shop.nordstrom.com Crochet Cardigans Craftwork is the texture of the season. Instead of wearing lace opt for crochet. Ladies, look for crochet overlay dresses to add a hint of prestige and feminine interest. Where to shop? https://coedition.com Pastel Blazers Blazers are a perfect office choice for sophistication but instead of wearing plain black, bring in spring with a flamboyant color. Pistachio green is the pastel hue for this season. Where to shop? https://shop.mango.com/us Big Bow Shoes Skip all the glitz and add some pizzazz to your shoe collection. Oversized bows on heels and flats are making their way to the forefront as a style statement. Where to Shop? https://www.dsw.com Head Game Strong Invest in stylish headwear for work such as a sequin turban, embellished headbands or a bowtie satin scarf. Then for cocktail hour throw on your woven straw hat or an elaborate headpiece for a splash of color to wear with your plain black suit. Where to shop? https://www.jjshouse.com/ 9

Sistah’s Place Mar/Apr 2019 These Spring and Summer trends are easy to pull off without breaking the bank or office attire rules. Just remember less is more and add your personality to the trend of your choice to avoid blending in with the other trend-doers. It’s liberating to burst your comfort bubble and try new styles. If fashion fads are too bold for you, try the trend through accessorizing. You’ll stay style updated without feeling uncomfortable in a loud eye-catching outfit. And don’t forget, this season welcomes refreshed vibes, so don’t skip on trying something new. Let’s begin spring cleaning with our closets and add in some dynamic styles even in the smallest ways.

Extending love through her touch

Talonda Davis is a caregiver and nurturer by nature. At the tender age of nine, she was assisting ill family members, including her mother who was battling cancer at the time, while children her age were busy doing joyous things that children do. Her joy in helping others came from places she wouldn’t understand until later in life. Her mother, a God-fearing woman who raised three children on the Westside of Chicago by herself, raised them on biblical principles. She was always extending love to others. From her, Talonda learned the importance of a servant’s heart. She also developed a personal relationship with God and truly became passionate about visiting the sick, volunteering at shelters, serving at

food pantries, and helping others in need.

At this time, Talonda didn’t know that caring for others was her calling. However, she did know that “God has blessed my hands to accomplish my purpose.” In 2005, she became a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and worked briefly in that field. She later earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Organizational Leadership and a Master of Business Administration with a concentration in Not-for-Profit Management. Although she accomplished a lot during her career, there was still a void that left her unfulfilled. The un-denying urge to care for others became obvious, yet she continued to ignore it. “When my desire to meet the needs of others outweighed financial gain, I knew then it was who I was created to be,” she recalls. Ignoring her passion was no longer an option. While seeking God to reveal her purpose, by prayer and fasting, she was led to her foundational scripture Ephesians 2:10: “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” For Talonda, this was confirmation that Clinical Therapy was her destiny. In 2015, she finally answered the call and enrolled in the SOMA Institute for a clinical massage therapist degree. Her prayer became a reality in 2016 when she formed Creative Touch Massage Therapy. “It was my desire that others would be blessed by ‘my touch.”

11

Sistah’s Place Mar/Apr 2019

As a massage therapist, Talonda is absolutely fascinated by deep tissue massage, which is one of the most requested services. The special technique of realigning the deeper layers of muscles, connective tissue, and releasing muscle knots through touch connects her to the body in a visual way. She uses her gift of touch to help relieve chronic pain, stiffness, and loosen tight muscles which relaxes, relieves, and rejuvenates clients. Because clinical massage therapy is Talonda’s ministry, she doesn’t just touch clients physically; she touches them mentally, emotionally and spiritually. She makes it a priority to ensure that every person who enters Creative Touch feels comfortable, and lets them know everything about their health and wellness matters to her. Clients appreciate the research and plethora of knowledge she provides regarding the functions of the human body, as well as the benefits of massage therapy. Her clients often remind and thank her for having a welcoming approach; for being attentive to and addressing their needs them, and for providing a SPAtacular experience. To schedule an appointment or consultation with Talonda, call 312-324-4518 or visit Creative Touch Massage Therapy at 32 Chicago Avenue in Oak Park, IL. Change Starts With Truth by Dr. Barbara Evans

With the start of the New Year, I quickly began to experience an increase in calls from potential clients wanting to schedule an appointment with the need to deal with suppressed traumas and other issues of mental illnesses. On January 3rd, 2019, Lifetime aired a docuseries ‘Surviving R. Kelly’ which documented the singer’s decades-long sexual abuse of young black girls & women. This series drew 1.9 million total viewers the first night it aired marking Lifetimes’ best performance in more than two years in all key demographics. It’s safe to decide that there is a direct correlation between this docuseries and the increase of clients wanting to address their past traumas. In the week that Surviving R. Kelly aired, the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN) received a 27 percent increase in calls. Many found that watching as well as just hearing about this docuseries triggered memories of their own experiences leading to reliving past traumas. Then the next two weeks to follow, I observed a mass of spectators discussing and censuring R. Kelly trying to find out how he was able to get away with such horrendous behavior. Here’s a good time to introduce some TRUTHS. First, mental illness is common and treatable and is nothing to be ashamed of. It is a medical condition just like heart disease or diabetes. Most recently, actress Jada Pinkett Smith of the Red Table Talk, disclosed that she battled severe depression and drug use for years as well as 14

Sistah’s Place Mar/Apr 2019 being suicidal at age 20. Jennifer Lewis, star of Black-ish, openly talks about the fact that she is Bi-Polar and went to therapy for 17 years twice a week as a result of being molested as a child. While there are many reasons a person decides to keep their secrets, the truth is that trauma can have long-lasting physical, physiological & emotional effects and we have to look after our mental health otherwise it results in mental illness. Secondly, it’s time to talk about the tough stuff…CHANGE! There will come a time in your life that you must engage in self-reflection in order to face your truth no matter how difficult. Seeking and finding your truth will lead you to heal. Sometimes it seems as If people are always looking to be rescued…truth…no one can rescue us but ourselves! It takes courage to step into your fears but in order to make positive changes, one must be willing to take personal responsibility for our own lives. Each person has the key to their mental & emotional freedom through their thoughts and the evolution of their mind & spirit. With hard work, therapy, and a good support system, you can take ownership of your life. You may need to prioritize yourself after watching Surviving R. Kelly. A. Rochaun MeadowsFernandez, 2019. ‘Surviving R. Kelly’ docuseries breaks ratings premiere records for Lifetime. Life Is a Tradeoff by Faith Berthey Declare what is to be…

When I awoke this morning, I thought about what the “Morning Devotional” would be for the day. Amidst my thoughts was this question: “God, are you there?” Immediately I started thinking about all the things in life that would require asking, “God, are you there?” But then I decided to pray, and in my prayer time, God ministered this to me: “You can dwell on all that you cannot do, or you can be grateful for what you can do. You can approach payday wondering how your check will cover everything, or you can be grateful there is a paycheck. You can worry about the health issue that no one has an answer for, or you can get up in the strength God has given for this day. You can dwell on the blessings you feel were missed, or you can be thankful for the blessing of a new day.” So much time is spent on trying to be what society, the world, or the church says we should be that we often miss the very simple plan of God: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not to your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him. And He will direct…” (Proverbs 3:5-6, NKJV). In trying to meticulously plan our lives, we often leave out the Master planner; before we know it, life is over with very little, if any, actual living having been done. Subsequently, we begin to believe we have failed at life. Well, that’s not necessarily true. Perhaps what you have in mind is simply not what God has in mind for you. That would mean you are not a failure; you are simply following the wrong plan.

16

Sistah’s Place Mar/Apr 2019 A very special person in my life went home to be with the Lord recently. Everyone that I talked to about her had something special to say. To my knowledge, she was not rich or famous, but she lived a life that mattered to so many people. She lived life intentionally! She lived a life that touched other lives. Living life intentionally requires nothing more than accepting each day on that day’s terms. It is a conscious decision to take whatever the day offers with thankfulness for good health and gratitude for God once again opening your eyes. This means, taking the good with the not so good and dubbing it all very good! In some way, whether you realize it or not, what happened that day intentionally touched and changed another life. Life is a tradeoff. You can live life or question life. Either way, life is going to happen. The only true question is: How? There are two banquets prepared for each life. You can partake of fear and doubt or of peace and joy. Maybe you do not manage to accomplish all that you planned or all that you thought you were put here to do. SO WHAT! Intentional life is never about what you thought. Intentional life is about God’s thoughts, His plans, and His purpose. If your life does not reflect God’s intent, it simply is not a life lived intentionally. BE BLESSED-BE FREE

by Marcie Hill Celebrating Women Who ROCK!

Wife. Mother. Sister. Friend. Leader. Visionary. These are just some of the hats women wear; many of them at the same time. This is particularly true of Joyce Dawkins, the creative mind behind She ROCKS It, The Girlfriend Gathering, SRI PerSOULnal, and Professional Development, S.H.E. Inc., Sisters Helping Each-other 501c3, My Soul Point of View, and My Soulfood Point of View. Joyce, like other purpose-filled “everyday” women, are rarely acknowledged or awarded for the amount of work they do. “For years, I watched award shows where women were being awarded, honored, and acknowledged for things they were doing in the community, in the arts, in business, as entrepreneurs and educators. The one thing that came to my mind as I knew some women just like this, but there were little to no local platforms in my area that mirrored this level of acknowledgment.” That changed in 2016 when she launched She ROCKS It. With only 86 followers on social media, Joyce quickly spread the word about her mission, her organization and her inaugural event designed to honor and celebrates women from across the Chicagoland area as women to watch. 18

Sistah’s Place Mar/Apr 2019

“For years I have witnessed successful everyday women going above and beyond their daily jobs to do things that impacted and changed the lives of others,” says Joyce. “These women didn’t serve and give to receive recognition; they gave and served because it was their purpose and passion in life.” One such woman who was a domestic violence survivor. Instead of being a victim of the horrible acts she endured; she broke the silence by sharing the story about her past as a way to impact the future of other victims. Joyce’s mission actually began in 2008. After being laid off from corporate America, Joyce began to petition God for her purpose in life. She asked him to give her the desires of her heart, which included an organization that would give her a platform to do all she desired to do. Nearly seven years later, she went to God again. This time she had a specific request: a platform where she could honor women who mirrored the woman she was. She asked him to show her how this organization should look; how she should build it; and how she should share it with others. “He gave me She ROCKS It - Celebrating Women Who ROCK!” SHE represents the pillar and strength of women in families, on the job and in the community. ROCKS represents all they do. IT represents everything they touch, do and seek to accomplish. A woman who ROCKS “finds a way to fulfill her life’s purpose by any means necessary, in spite of challenges.” She manages to balance work and life while finding time for herself. Most importantly, she has a story: a story of accomplishments; a story of overcoming some of life toughest obstacles; a story of survival, healing, strength, and power.

The final part of Joyce’s petition was a request to celebrate women. God showed her a day of celebration where women would come together, smiling, excited to meet new women, dressed classy and sassy in their soulful best, representing their unique self. She also got a vision of elegant venues with warm and welcoming atmospheres. Lastly, God told her to give them an experience. This event is called Celebrating Women Who ROCK Gala.

19

Sistah’s Place Mar/Apr 2019

After months of promoting and sharing who SHE is on social media, Joyce’s dream became a reality in May of 2016. Over 200 women attended the inaugural Celebrating Women Who ROCK event. “Our events are carefully crafted to ensure women leave feeling fulfilled, empowered, excited, happy, motivated and inspired to live their best life,” says Joyce. She wants guests to have transformational experiences. Most importantly, she wants them to receive VIP treatment without paying VIP prices. The 3rd Annual Celebrating Women Who ROCK Gala will be held on Sunday, May 5, 2019. Twenty women and two organizations from across the Chicagoland area will be celebrated and honored. There will be a powerful and phenomenal speaker; a chance to shop from vendors; and the opportunity to connect with women from all walks of life. What is your “Why”? Understanding Your Purpose by Cynthia

Guillory

I am a teacher and I was thinking about returning to work after the holidays. I was struck by the feeling that I just didn’t want to go back. It was not because I wanted to have a longer break, or that I didn’t want to work anymore. I just didn’t understand the “WHY” of why I would return? Let me explain right before the break the students took a test that based on the scores should give us teachers and administrators an idea or projection of who was expected to pass in the spring into the next grade. The numbers were dismal, to say the least. When I received the scores for my students my heart sank. Their growth projection was the lowest in the school…the lowest. I immediately began to blame myself. Had my heart not been into this school year? Am I not happy or satisfied with my work? What am I not doing that is affecting what my students need to succeed? Why am I here? Surely, they could have achieved these meager scores without me. Why do I show up every day if this is the result?

I began to really think about where my head and heart have been for the first two quarters and I had to admit to myself that “No” my heart has not been into this school. “No” I was not happy nor satisfied with my work. “No” I did not want to come back to this job. So, there it was staring me in the face. Now, the question is how and if that affected my students’ growth in any way. I 22

Sistah’s Place Mar/Apr 2019 have to really look at the possibility that it may have. Even though, I showed up every day. I gave extra help and extra credit. Even though, I stayed up late at night preparing lesson plans and worked through the weekends… maybe it wasn’t enough because my heart was still not completely satisfied. I had to ask myself, why I keep come back to this job if my heart is not in it. Why am I wasting time doing something I do not love? The only answer I could come up with was the kids. I truly love the kids. They need me there. The sad thing is that despite the fact I was initially not feeling my job wholeheartedly, I was feeling them. I am very passionate about helping my students succeed. I’m not naïve enough to think that all my kids will meet their goals at the end of the year. The truth is some are just too far behind to achieve that kind of growth in one year. However, I do believe that all my students should grow. I believe that all my students should leave my class this year having learned something they did not know before they walked into my class. So, when I go back to my original question, “What is my WHY”… my, why are my students? Reminding myself of that and renewing my passion for them has been just what I needed to get me back in gear so I can get them back on track. We’re halfway through the school year now and it’s now or never for all of us. I had this conversation with my students the first day they returned after winter break. I wanted to remind them just like I had to be reminded that there is a purpose for why we are here. It’s more than a paycheck, it’s more than your parents making you come to school, and it’s different for us all. We have to figure it out and then we have to act on it. Ask yourself before you start your next week…what is my “WHY”? Then, make sure you are working t

Chasing our Waterfalls by Jeanee Patton

There are moments in our lives when we reflect on the decisions that we made and how it affected our overall path in life. We are all at different phases of our lives and see the world through our own lenses. Our prescription for our lenses is based on our life’s experiences and the decisions we made along the way. No two prescriptions will ever be the same or fit the frames of someone else. Hindsight being 20/20 many would make different choices if given the opportunity. Who are the people you would have avoided? What career moves would you have taken or not taken? What relationships or friendships would you have kept or let go? We could ask a million questions surrounded by all the what if’s and still come up with the conclusion we are exactly where we are supposed to be. Your small change in your past could have a monumental effect on the direction your life could have taken. As much as you would like to think your change would have been all positive, there might be some components you are not considering. Have you ever considered the failed relationship you beat yourself up over produced a beautiful legacy? The one you thought was a total waste of your time is the one who contributed to the DNA of your beautiful child. Things fall into perspective once you realize you are exactly where you are supposed to be in life. Whether it’s a lesson being taught or a moment of a standstill; perhaps you are in a place where you are being taught patience or how to be grateful. Regardless of the reason, you can’t change the past. You must dust yourself off and move forward with the newfound knowledge you have gained.

24

Sistah’s Place Mar/Apr 2019 Life is truly like a box of chocolates. You just never know what you are going to get. Move forward embracing whatever comes your way knowing what doesn’t kill you will make you stronger. No matter how tempting it may be to have a do-over button; life is best when you learn from your mistakes.
