A NEW BEGINNING

Dear readers, New apartments, new jobs, going back to school or even a new man – September has always been a month that brought big changes to my life. To me, this month is more about new experiences and the start of a new chapter than any other. And just like many others, this always makes me feel a little uncomfortable, even scared, besides all the excitement. By now, I am sure: even as a »strong woman« (you will see that this was a big topic in this issue which is why I am using those words) I am allowed to have respect when new tasks and decisions are waiting for me.

Just like the admirable Diane von Fürstenberg, sisterMAG as a »bigger picture« slowly developed to be where it is now. With every magazine, we grew with our tasks, realized bigger projects and worked with ever new contributors. And still we felt: It is time for another change. To stay creatively interesting, we always have to challenge ourselves and take new paths. The user behaviour of our readers (so 3

yours!) has continuously shifted to reading on mobile devices and in the browser. This is why, starting with sisterMAG N° 26, we respond to that with a new publication format: more sisterMAG with more frequent publishing dates! Our leading topics for each issue will remain and we will continue to provide you with information and shoots, visual inspiration, many bloggers and people from all over the world. Just more often and in smaller portions! We are starting today, on September 1st, with an editorial to get you in the right mood for our theme »Soil and Harvest«. We visited a sheep farm in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, shot our main visual photos with the wonderful Christine, Trickytine, in summery Brandenburg in fields and on meadows and we will show you harvest ideas and the best destinations for a rural vacation. During the last few weeks, different photographers, stylists and friends mentioned that it seems like we wouldn’t even get out of our shooting and work marathon. To be honest: that’s what it felt like for us, too!  This is why Toni and me want to thank our entire team who worked so hard on realizing all those projects. A special thank you also goes out to all the photographers, stylists, blogger-models and hair & makeup artists, assistants, videographers, and so on… Every photo shoot with you was an extraordinary pleasure full of fun and laughter!

However, it is not always necessary to travel for hours, or even days, in order to find a truly amazing location. Depending on where you are there might be something just as spectacular nearby. We’ve set out to find some of the most amazing and inspiring sites – be they manmade or natural. Here is our list.

That’s what it must feel like to be on mars. Steeply rising irregular cliffs of luminous orange, red, white and rose coloured sandstone compose an impressive constellation, which does indeed look very much like the monumental staircase of a giant. In »Devil’s Garden«, an area whose name fits just perfectly, the so called »hoodoos« stand out against the sky, huge formations of stone in strange shapes which are sometimes connected, forming bridges and arches. It’s hard to believe that all those amazing structures have emerged without any human influence. At Grand Staircase Escalante there are no specifically marked routes for hikers, instead you have to follow footpaths and find you own way through.

Alternative: Another place that is likely to make you forget about everyday life is Vikos Gorge in north-western Greece. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s depth ranging from 450 to 1600 m, the gorge is listed as one of the deepest in the world and serves as an impressive location for a hiking trip in this scarcely populated area.

Want to experience traces of history, but without city noise and traffic?

The castellated towers rise high into the sky. Below, several buildings huddle together, forming a mighty complex that overlooks the village from the distance. It almost seems as if the massive walls emerged directly from the rock on top of which Bran Castle is situated. Narrow stairs and a gallery encase the half-timbered walls of the inner courtyard. The castle in central Romanian Transylvania is known all around the world for having been Bram Stoker’s inspiration when he described the home of mythical count Dracula. After many years of state ownership, the castle was given back to the original owners 2006. Today it can be visited and serves as a location for cultural events as well as private festivities. In case you get tired there’s even a luxuriously furnished suite which can be booked.

Alternative: Castel Roncolo, situated close to South Tyrol’s capital Bolzano features the oldest cycle of medieval mundane frescos in all of Europe, a unique occasion to get an insight into the details of court life and fashion trends from the time around 1400, which is when the frescos were created. Marvelling at the still incredibly vibrant colours you wouldn’t believe they are actually already more than 600 years old.

Want to enjoy a lake view?

This won’t be news to you but Canada really does offer an amazing variety of destinations for getaways. Take Lake Louise for example. Knowing that the nearby village of the same name is the country’s highest permanent settlement, located amidst the stunning Rocky Mountains in world famous Banff National Park, will already make you start imagining the beauty of this place. Depending on the season and weather conditions the water surface gleams in deep turquoise green and makes for an amazing mirror of the surrounding panorama. Lake Louise is the perfect starting point for all kinds of outdoor activities, hiking obviously included. The higher you climb, the greater the view of the lake and the close-by Victoria Glacier gets. You feel like having seen that exact picture already? You might be right, because some of the lookouts are exactly from where all the inspiring calendar motives have been photographed.

Alternative: Returning to our side of the Atlantic, Europeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most spectacular lake region might be found in Plitvice Lakes National Park in central Croatia. A total of 16 lakes, glowing in all shades of deep green, turquoise and blue, are connected to each other through amazing cascades and waterfalls. The fact that all of this has evolved completely naturally and without any human influence, makes the experience even more special.

Want to really breathe deeply? That’s what real freedom feels like: after having climbed for three hours, conquering almost 1000 m of difference in altitude, you are finally standing on top of Schesaplana, with a total of 2965 m the highest mountain within the area of Rätikon, enjoying a breathtaking panorama view of 360°. The tour starts at the mountain station at Lünersee, and who is really up for a challenge, treats themselves to a refreshing swim before boarding the mountain railway that will take you back down to reality.

Want to be out in the sticks? Maybe the last untouched area in densely populated southern England is the New Forest, a mostly wooded heathland between Hampshire, Wiltshire and Dorset. It has a bit of everything, so itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s your choice if you prefer to go on long walks across remote woodlands where you will stumble upon magical clearings that seem to be straight from a fairy tale. On the other hand, there is also the infrastructure necessary to enjoy fun outdoor activities such as horseback riding, biking or even going shopping in one of the small villages and towns.

Sometimes it is nice to know that the next bike rental station is to be found within walking distance. However, if you would like to actually disconnect from the real world for a bit, Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve in Costa Rica, Central America, is your destination. 90 % of the area are still covered by virgin forest, a remarkably high amount compared to other, similar zones. The most intriguing feature the Reserve has to offer is its cloud forest, or fog forest, which is characterised by trees and high ferns disappearing into low hanging clouds, creating a stunningly dreamy, enchanting atmosphere.

Only 120 km from the hectic and bustling activity of Vietnam’s capital Hanoi there is Cuc Phuong National Park, a real oasis bursting of deep green forest and home of hundreds of rare species such as leopards, birds and black bears. When visiting the park in April or May there’s a good chance you will get to see the population of thousands of multi-coloured butterflies.

COULD YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF? WHAT’S YOUR NAME AND WHERE ARE YOU FROM? My name is Steffen Honzera and I am originally from the German city Stuttgart. For the past 6 years, I have been living in the province Mecklenburg Vorpommern, in Vietschow, a really small town that most of you probably don’t know. I am a trained photographer and used to work as a photo journalist. But since moving to Mecklenburg Vorpommern, I work with the milk sheep on our farm.

DOES YOUR JOB EVEN REQUIRE AN ACTUAL DESK TO DO YOUR WORK?

My day starts at 5:30 AM every morning with milking the sheep. Afterwards, we take the animals out to their pasture. After that is done, the humans can finally have some breakfast, too.

We certainly do need a desk! Luckily, I don’t have to spend too much time at it though, as my partner takes care of the majority of our office work. That gives me the chance to spend more time working with the animals and on the grounds. So I usually don’t spend a lot of time at my desk.

During the day, I am working on the fields and in the stables until we bring the sheep in at around 5:30 PM to milk them again. That is followed by feeding the animals for the night and cleaning up. Usually after that, I spend some time in front of my computer to answer emails and take care of administrative tasks. Since we offer vacation homes and tours of our farm as well, there is always a lot of work to do there, which is why I generally don’t get to bed before 10:30 at night.

WHAT DOES YOUR WORKPLACE LOOK LIKE AND WHERE IS IT LOCATED? My main workplace is definitely our barn, which is where I spend most of my time during the day. The barn is 60 meters long, 25 meters wide and 12 meters high.

In a way, it is both as we get all our bills on paper, but we also need the computer and use it a lot. Our desk is a bit of a mess and a creative chaos so the stacks of paper might sometimes get higher than they actually need to be.

WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL NO GO ON YOUR DESK? Unfortunately, there is always lots of flys around who are sitting on our laptop screen and can get really annoying. WHICH TOOLS DO YOU USE THE MOST? When it comes to tools, I am definitely a builder: no matter if itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a hammer, a wrench, an angle grinder or a welding machine. Everything you might need to build and craft is part of my everyday tool set. And of course, I use the equipment needed for the sheep on a daily basis, too.

For the award ceremony three winners in the categories »Best Creative Idea«, »Best Interior Blog« and »Best individual Style« will be chosen from the 15 best bloggers. The workshops during the day will be all about Urban Jungle Trends. Judith and Igor, the Urban Jungle Bloggers, will present their first book, there will be a guided tour through the Botanical Garden in Munich and Anastasia Benko will hold a workshop on seasonal flower-arrangements. He is also one of the founders of the »Urban Jungle Bloggers«, an international plant-community, that already connects more than 1200 bloggers. As an expert for the urban jungle interior style, he sees the green living trend as a balance to our highly digitalised and fast-paced everyday lives.
