Hello summer and hello new sisterMAG colour combo, is what we say to introduce this issue. And while we fall in love with shades of green and orange, there is something else that needs to be said: you are currently reading the 30th (!) issue of sisterMAG. Of course, we had to celebrate this anniversary, starting with amazing jewelry from the Philippines on our cover, presented by the sisters Valerie and Vanessa, founders of the beautiful online jewelry shop »VERA Moments«. We also take the chance to introduce the sisterMAG team to you a little more in a fashion-team-shooting (you can be excited for section 3)! We will dress up in lovely dresses embellished with nostalgic travel illustrations from San Sebastian to Firenze. Speaking of travel, that is not just part of our outfits, but a topic that can be found everywhere in this issue. No wonder, doesn’t the title »coral and glam« make you want to pack your bags to go to an exotic island or a cosy finka? And what better summer activity could there be than discovering new places, collecting memories and capturing them? Our partner Canon thought exactly the same and expresses it through #liveforthestory, which accompanied us and four influencers along with the compact system camera Canon EOS M10 through a sisterMAG week, to flea markets, cafés, Jerusalem, Mallorca, New York and even to L.A..

SISTERMAG 30 | 06 / 2017
Los Angeles, the city of angels, is also a big topic in the new show GLOW that we want to introduce to you with our partner, Netflix. That is why we took a closer look at the vibes of the 1980s and women in wrestling as well as speaking to tough and inspirational women in music and sports. Sounds like a crazy mix? It is and that is exactly what makes the feel good series so exciting and funny, almost as if you could enjoy the Californian sun from your couch at home.
If you are just looking for relaxation, don’t forget to pack enough reading material. We got you covered with our favourite summer novels, from classics to new discoveries! And of course, you’ll want to be well dressed in the summer heat, which is why we picked some beautiful swim clothes, dresses and accessories for you all inspired by corals and palm trees. Now there should only be one struggle left: the vacation is much too short. Maybe you should consider taking a longer break, how about a sabbatical? We tell you why that could be just the thing for you and what you should pay attention to!
Your summer vacation is already booked and you are looking forward to beach and sea? How about learning something new this year, such as scuba diving? We collected the most important tips for absolute beginners and will answer the question: How do I become a scuba diver? If you prefer mountains and rocks to beach and sea, we have a destination in mind for you as well: the Spanish town Ronda, from which our author and blogger Julia Schattauer writes in this issue.
SISTER-MAG.COM
No matter if you are at home or at the beach, if you are on a little escape or collecting inspiration for big trips, we hope you have a great time with this new, 30th issue of sisterMAG and wish you an amazing summer!
Yours, the sisterMAG Team 4

The Lungs OF THE PLANET DIVING INTO THE WORLD’S MOST DIVERSE ECOSYSTEM

u CORAL REEFS ARE HOME TO SO MANY LIVING SPECIES THAT SCIENTISTS HAVE LITERALLY LOST COUNT. IT’S NO WONDER, THEN, THAT THESE WONDERS OF THE NATURAL WORLD ARE CONSIDERED TO BE THE WORLD’S MOST DIVERSE ECOSYSTEM. SOMETHING SO PRECIOUS IS WORTH PROTECTING AN EFFORT THAT’S BECOMING INCREASINGLY NECESSARY.
u
They burst in all colours of the rainbow, form in Gaudían structures, and you’ll never find the same one twice – indeed, coral reefs are among the world’s most breathtaking spectacles. The most famous constellation of coral reefs, Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, is even listed among the Seven Natural Wonders of the World and is protected as a World Heritage Site.

But they’re much more than a feast for the eyes. Coral reefs are considered to be the world’s most diverse ecosystem and are often referred to as the »lungs of the planet.« Home to between 35,000 and 60,000 identified species, with an estimated 1 to 9 million more residing anonymously within their calcium catacombs, their importance to ocean life cannot be understated.
That’s probably because, in addition to marine housing, coral reefs are living organisms themselves. These intricate living and breathing structures form when jellyfishlike polyps attach themselves to the seabed and start secreting calcium carbonate to build a hard exoskeleton around their soft bodies. When conditions are right for these polyps to settle in massive colonies, you get coral reefs that can cover hundreds of thousands of square kilometres.

While the 2,300-kilometre-long Great Barrier Reef was formed around 20,000 years ago, the formation of most modern coral reefs coincides with ice melts following the last glacial period around 10,000 years ago. They develop in three primary formations: fringing, barrier,
around a lagoon. The atolls of the Maldives in the Indian Ocean are an especially alluring coral crescendo.
Unfortunately, they’ve also been damaged by warming ocean temperatures resulting from climate change. u WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING WE CAN LEARN FROM CORAL REEFS?
INTERVIEW
u The continued decline of coral reefs would have a devastating effect on the ocean’s biodiversity and world’s tropical regions. In fact, German author and journalist Heinz Krimmer, who’s studied reefs for over 30 years as an underwater photographer and ocean expert, considers them to be »more valuable than Google and Apple.« His recently published book, »Coral Reef Network,« reveals just how crucial coral reefs are to life, the extent to which human activity has damaged them, and how we can protect their existence in the future. We spoke to him about what we can learn from coral reefs, the most surprising facts of his research, and how corals play a critical role in medical research... SISTER-MAG.COM
The great American ecologist Eugene P. Odum answered this question perfectly. In 1980 he wrote in his magnum opus, »Fundamentals of Ecology,« that »man can learn a lot from the coral reef about recycling and the art of surviving in a world with scarce resources – an indication to pursue a better symbiosis with the plants and animals on which we depend.« Together with the help of photosynthetic algae, coral reefs create one of the world’s most species-rich ecosystems using just a few nutrients and solar energy. They are a common work of living creatures, and don’t belong to a single species, genus, or family. They belong to various realms within the biological system.

ABOUT CORAL REEFS?
ECONOMIC VALUE?
u
u
Their gigantic economic value. The monetary value coral reefs generate annually can be calculated at around $172 billion USD. Some researchers estimate as high as a trillion dollars.
There is not a single ecosystem that provides us with »services« in so many economically important areas. Coral reefs create land, like islands and coasts. Not only that, but they also protect it from destruction by wind and waves. Almost all coastal areas and islands in the tropics are marked by coral reefs, which of course are a major benefit to tourism as well.
I’m also impressed by their resilience, which could allow them to defy the effects of climate change provided that the reduction targets set out by the Paris Climate Agreements are met. It should also be known that climate change has not and likely will not entirely cause the destruction of reefs, but rather it will result from a combination that also includes pollution, physical destruction, and overfishing. I’m encouraged that the tourism industry, as a whole, is having a positive impact on the protection of coral reefs.
Most of the world's oil and gas deposits are stored in fossil reefs, and coral reefs belong to the largest calcium producers on the planet. Calcium is one of the most important components of industrial production. While reefs cover only about 0.2 per cent of the ocean floor, they are home to 12 per cent of the world’s total fish imports. At the same time, they export biomass, food, and species to other ecosystems.

Coral reefs are indispensable for ocean biodiversity – 30% of all oceans' fish species live in coral reefs. Medicinal ingredients found in reefs are very promising for medical research. The chemical compound AZT, which is used to treat and prevent AIDS, is found in Caribbean sea sponges. Overall, around 500 million people depend directly and indirectly on coral reefs.
living in these zones would lose their homes. Fish exports in the tropics would collapse. Not only in the reefs, but also in all other ecosystems that rely on reefs for their biomass and nutrient supply. The tourism industry in the tropics would lose much of its appeal and the biodiversity of the oceans would decrease significantly. u WHAT CAN PEOPLE DO TO PROTECT THE CORAL
u
REEFS? WHAT ARE THE
u
CONSEQUENCES IF CORALS CONTINUE TO DIE?
u If the corals die, there will be no coral reef ecosystem anymore. The consequences would be disastrous in the tropics. All the coral islands and large coastal regions would be damaged by flooding, as the reefs could no longer protect the coasts. People SISTER-MAG.COM
The establishment of as many marine protection areas as possible is the first and most important measure if coral reefs are to have a chance against climate change due to high CO2 emissions. Only healthy reefs have a way to defy warmer water temperatures and oceanic acidification. We’re seeing more protected areas being developed, but it is by no means sufficient.

Reef protection has been supported primarily by NGOs and very few policy initiatives. As an individual, you can help by donating to these organizations. If you go on vacation, you should try to forgo booking based only on the cheapest price, but also opt for companies that are active in environmental protection. We can all help with climate change. Avoid CO2 emissions wherever possible – run or ride your bike instead of taking the car, for example. u

THEA NEUBAUER
My relationship to photography is not as simple and uncomplicated as I wish it would be. This might be related to the fact that I give too much thought to everything and everyone. It’s a recurring phenomenon that – as soon as I start talking to my family about photography – everybody rolls their eyes. No wonder since it took two years for me to finally buy a new camera. ;)
SISTER-MAG.COM
When I started a small personal blog in 2008 that wasn't suppose to reach a high range, it wasn't that complicated. Back then, I owned a CANON POWERSHOT (model line G - I don't remember the number, I think it was a G11) and took it everywhere. On my blog, I showed DIY ideas and outfits and described my life, especially while I studied in Stuttgart and London. For example, I compared a photo walk on »BRIDGES« (from Blackfriars Bridge to Millennium Bridge) with fashion collections (from Jil Sander to Giambattista Valli) which can be seen here . I experimented with collages and Photoshop and usually edited the pictures myself. With this rudimentary knowledge of a hobby photographer but with a great passion for magazines and visual things, my sister and I started sisterMAG. I remember our first photo shooting very well – or rather my first panic fear of failing. In Stuttgart, we photographed shirts and outdoor jackets with a good friend who almost froze to death during the shooting because

the temperature was -20 degrees Celsius! Ultimately, this was the right general rehearsal since the cold made us forget about the fear of our tasks. The photographer and I worked together well and fast, we shot all our pictures in time (you can see the results here ). Thanks to the sisterMAG project, many photographers not only became contributors but also good friends. Especially my best friend Cristopher Santos formed me »photographically«
since I got many tips and tricks on photography from him. Maybe that's why I have an ambivalent relation to this form of art. When you are friends with different photographers and work with them on set as an art director, you acquire some knowledge – but I would never call myself a photographer. I respect photography a lot. When someone introduces himself or herself as photographer, I expect high standards in terms of their skills, the image composition, the technical knowhow and, of course, the final product. I don't meet these standards myself.

MAG FOR ONE WEEK
One week at the sisterMAG office. This means in particular: There’s a lot going on! From reconstructing the office and a shooting to a business trip and a small tour at the weekend – no two days are alike for me. But what connects all these events is that I want to capture and share them to remember all these small everyday stories later. Because that’s what makes the job as an editor-in-chief so exciting: the people I get to know, the variety and the many funny, surprising and beautiful moments. The only problem that comes up again and again is: How do I keep these moments? The smartphones is often not enough for me: Pictures get too dark, too light or not quite sharp. But I don’t have my big camera with me all the time either since I sometimes forget to take it with me or since it’s too heavy for me. All the more exciting was it to take the compact system-camera Canon EOS M10 to the editorial office and to various trips for one week. What came out of that and which seven pictures capture the stories of this week perfectly? You will see on the next pages!

When you photograph in the evening or at night, the fading light means that it’s more difficult to keep the camera absolutely still so that your pictures often look blurred. The flash on your camera only ruins the dark and atmospheric mood, like in a nocturnal street or at a candle-light diner. With higher ISO, you can keep your pictures sharp when you shoot in the dark.
At the location scouting for an upcoming campaign for a partner, the Canon particularly surprises my colleague Christina: We only make it to the bar by dawn and with approaching darkness so the light conditions are very difficult. But the pictures of the bar show the details and colours of the fittings incredibly precise and perfectly illuminated! With the kit lens 18-55mm, it’s also possible to display the whole interior – thanks to wide angle.

A huge ice-cream cone in the hallway, opulent stucco decoration in an old building or forgotten things with patina are, next to interior and cut flowers, my favourite photo scenes. 02 DANI daninanaa.com, Fashion & Travel Blog that tells a story MY PHOTO It all started with JOURNEY a normal digital
camera that I got from my mom for graduation. Back then, a digital camera was something »great« because I could make pictures fast and easy. But the more I dealt with the camera the higher the standards and the interest in great pictures became. Two years later, I got my first SLR camera. I exactly remember the day when my boyfriend and I tried out the camera in Barcelona. Without experimenting with it beforehand, we just snapped and felt like »professionals,« of course. One of the results was the picture of me on the right side. When I look at the pictures today, I clearly see how much ignorance is behind them – we didn’t have any idea of ISO, depth of focus, light setting

or anything else. They occurred randomly and with lots of vitality which makes these shots as special for me. You maybe ask yourselves now: »Why?«
Back

used our camera and captures spontaneous moments – today, people check the light first, look for the perfect background and the whole sideshow has to fit as well until the camera is brought into the right setting. The more you deal with photography the higher your own standards and the wish for a perfect picture get. Photography even got a bigger meaning for me after I founded my own blog www.daninanaa.com and the Instagram channel Dani_ Nanaa. Because I especially use my personal pictures to communicate with the community. My pictures

IDEA – Before I even shoot a picture I
think about what I want to transport in the picture and where my focus is. I usually have an exact concept of how the result should be. Unfortunately, there are also ideas that are not that great once you see the pictures but that’s what makes photography exciting.
LOCATION – When it comes to
outfit pictures I consider what location I would like to go. It always depends on what outfit I’m wearing and what’s in the focus. I like light and clear backgrounds. Over time, I learned that you should know your shooting location beforehand and not drive around aimlessly because that puts you off which you can see in the pictures later. :-) As for my »flatlays« or »food pictures,« I ensure that the background is not too restless and that the colours match the products. A little decoration won’t do any harm as well.
SISTER-MAG.COM
56
LIGHT & CONDITIONS –
are crucial for good pictures! Of course, the weather plays an important role too. Especially in Hamburg, it’s not easy to get good weather. :) As for outfit pictures, I like to photograph with slightly cloudy conditions because then you mostly have consistent light conditions and no sun. As beautiful as bright sunshine is, as silly it is for making pictures because they always look a little yellow.
PERSPECTIVE – A picture
has a totally different effect when you change the perspective and the detail. As for the perspective, you should try out what you like most. We almost always shoot our outfit pictures head-on and in both portrait and landscape format. I shoot most of my flatlays from all perspectives and redecorate five times before I have the perfect framing.
POST-PRODUCTION – Even a
good photographer has to use small tools to put the finishing touches to their pictures. Today, there are dozens of picture editing programs and apps. I also tested some of them and only edit the brightness, the contrast and the saturation these days.

I’m a very visual person and always have exact visual concepts. Be it a new idea, a recipe or a planned trip, as soon as I think of it, a series of pictures plays in my head. That’s why it’s not always that easy with me when it comes to photography and the realization of a project since I’ve already seen the pictures clearly in my head. I can spend several hours on Pinterest and the Internet to collect ideas or to absorb beautiful pictures. At least as important for me is it to make appealing pictures myself and to capture valuable moments. Especially on the road, it’s always been very important for me to make many pictures in order to revive the beautiful memories again and again. Because my SISTER-MAG.COM
twin daughters are very young, I want to give them something with my pictures. For example, we had some especially beautiful encounters with the animal world when we were in Australia during our world trip. I succeeded in making some adorable pictures with native animals and our girls. That’s a great and permanent memory and even if they won’t remember every detail of the trip later, they will still have the pictures and the stories behind them. I started dealing with photography more intensively when my husband gave me a SLR camera as a birthday present some years ago and I wanted to master it. And also for my food and travel blog it’s important to share pictures of high quality with my followers. For that, I not only shoot with a Canon EOS M10 but also a Canon

Especially in the food area I started to play with the settings and now, I only shoot in the manual mode since I can adjust every setting in a flexible way. My pictures profited a lot from that, they are clearer and the light conditions are used perfectly. It’s a special joy for me to have action shots with icing sugar or liquid things because great effects occur just by using the right setting of the camera. And of course, photography and especially snapshots got a very special value ever since our children were born. To capture their development and all the beautiful moments they give us is very important for me. »To me, a good picture has to be able to tell a story.«

picture that you like to look at again and again and in which the story that lead to it stays alive. In the food area, rich colours and a certain sharpness are important. I also like how I can play with light and create very interesting image compositions. Especially when you shoot with children, every picture is a challenge since they rarely stand still. But to capture the intimate moments and the SISTER-MAG.COM
special relationship of our twins in pictures is a great incentive for me. We have great pictures of them when they were four years old and walked arm in arm in New York, like in »Sex and the City,« and even made commuters stop. Those are unforgettable moments that we tell them about with these pictures, even when they’ll be adults.

For me, a good picture has to be able to tell a story. The viewer who doesn’t know the background has to become curious and to be keen on listening to the origin story. Or, in the food area, they have to get hungry. And for those who are in or have taken the picture, it has to be like a mirror that brings them back to the place or the day when the picture happened.

This picture was taken in Australia during our world trip and I love its drama. We were on the road with a caravan and annoyed at that time because we didn’t find a good place to sleep. At that time, we neither had SLR cameras nor a good taste as far as our personal style was concerned. But anyway, it was cool in that moment and we could hardly wait until the photos were developed and ready to be picked up! Fast forward to 2007: I got a pink SLR camera. Fancy stuff! Learning to scuba dive
INTO THE BLUE
Those of who want to go scuba diving need a diving certificate. For »jumping into the waters and simply holding ones breath« will not do! It’s life-threatening, even! The Professional Association of Diving Instructors – PADI – is your go-to address. Since 1966, PADI is dedicated to train diving instructors worldwide and establish a uniform code of conduct under water. This way, an undiminishing number of people are excited to scuba dive (safely) each year.

WHAT TO DO TO GET THE PADI – CERTIFICATE • There is a theoretical and a practical part • Both of these you’ll be examined and need to pass • Until you’ve completed 100 scuba-diving sessions, you’ll need to refresh the certificate every 6 months
WHAT YOU’LL LEARN • Essential commands to use under water • Correct breathing • Correct floating There are diving schools at numerous holiday destinations, already. As practical as this may be for the spontaneous amongst you, don’t be fooled into thinking you’ll jump into the ocean right away. As the first hours are usually spent in a pool, the fun-levels are mediocre. Therefore, we’d recommend visiting the course before your holiday. And now, off to diving school!

Berlin INTERVIEW WITH BIBO LOEBNAU
Photo: Private
THE LEGENDARY
jungle Berlin author bibo Loebnau was one of the regulars of the city’s legendary and world-famous 1980s night club »Dschungel« on Nürnberger Straße. The nights spent there and life in the western part of Berlin shaped the life of the former journalist and PR-person. Some of the memories of the time and the people she met at the »Dschungel«, like Iggy Pop and David Bowie, can be found in her new Berlin-based novel »Zoe«. www.bibo-loebnau.de

AT WHICH TIME DID YOU VISIT THE JUNGLE? My first time at the »Jungle« was at the beginning of the 1980s. Together with a friend, I had hitchhiked from Bremen to Berlin, to see an Iggy Pop concert. Upon arriving at the walled-in city, at 4:30a.m., we went straight to the Jungle as my cousin Walter Schörling worked there and he was the only person we knew. However, I hadn’t seen him in years and when we arrived, the club was closed, because whatever happened, the Jungle would always close promptly at 4a.m. Luckily, Walter and some members of staff were still there and kind enough to let two girls from the valley with their sleeping bags clutched under their arms into the empty club. Thus, my first impression of the legendary Jungle was that of an empty, brightly-lit, cool, and relatively small location with numerous SISTER-MAG.COM
mirrors, a white winding staircase leading to the gallery with fountain and aquarium – and with a few super-cool, attractive, and friendly people. Needless to say, we were deeply impressed! Already the next evening, we went back to dance and drink cocktails. We also met Iggy Pop and his band that night – wow! Later, I was a regular at the Jungle until its final closing in 1993.

DID YOU ALSO VISIT OTHER CLUBS AT THE TIME? HOW DID THE JUNGLE DIFFER FROM THESE?
WHICH RELATIONSHIP DID YOU MAINTAIN WITH THE JUNGLE AND THE PEOPLE IN IT? My cousin Walter Schörling was one of the owners of the Jungle and many of my friends were regulars and guests, like me.
In 1983, I moved to Berlin in order to study, so naturally, I did go to other hip and cool bars and clubs – yet, back then we would just refer to them as »Pub« or »Disco«. Depending on the time of day, or evening, we’d go to »Café Swing«, »Risiko«, »Cri du Chat«, »DNC«, »Querelle«, »Mitropa«, »Slumberland«, »Pinguin Club«, »Oranienbar«, »90 Grad« etc. But especially on Thursdays and Sundays, the Jungle was the centre of attraction for us. It always had a very unique character, due to its strict door policy, the cool music and international guests. That made it very different to all of the other clubs

»OF COURSE, EVERYONE KNEW WHEN DAVID BOWIE, IGGY POP, PRINCE OR OTHER CELEBRITIES WERE THERE. BUT YOU’D ONLY LOOK FROM THE CORNER OF YOUR EYE OR DANCE, TALK OR DRINK WITH THEM AS YOU’D DO WITH ANYONE ELSE. «
WERE THERE EVENTS HAPPENING AT THE JUNGLE AT WHICH YOU’D THINK »THIS COULDN’T POSSIBLY HAPPEN TODAY«? It was strictly forbidden and even frowned upon to take pictures at the Jungle! Fortunately, we didn’t have any digital or mobile phone cameras. Thus, an analogue camera was easily spotted and the rules were respected. But this also comes at the price that today, there are hardly any pictures of the interior filled with guests. Only a rare few pictures have been taken secretly and some from big parties where photos were a little more »okay« to be taken. Also, it was an unwritten rule that celebrity guest were not to be spoken to or stared at. They should have been allowed to party as freely as us. Of course, everyone knew when David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Prince or other celebrities were there. But you’d only look from the corner of your eye or dance, talk or drink with them as you’d do with anyone else. This is what it was like for me when meeting Iggy Pop and later David Bowie. 113

Dear Sandra: Action, comedy, drama, mystery – which kind of series do you enjoy watching most? I’ve been a Science-Fiction fan ever since my childhood. The first movies I watched at the cinema were e.g. »Star Wars«, »E.T.«, and »Bladerunner«, later the list was extended by »Alien«. Movies of the 80s had a very particular feel which luckily sees a revival today – you can see this in all the remakes currently produced. I remained loyal to the Sci-Fi genre until today. I like comedy, too. Scandinavian movies such as »Adam’s Apple« or movies by Will Ferell are hilarious. Mystery Sci-Fi mix ups like the Netflix original »Stranger Things«, also »American Horror Story« or »Westworld« are top of my list. I was hooked on »Stranger Things« and can’t wait for the next season. Well-made series are highly addictive, so at home, we like to binge watch.
SISTER-MAG.COM
What requires a series to get you hooked? A series needs a gripping plot, otherwise I’m bored and don’t like it. I despise when the first 15 minutes are boring. This is a knock-out criteria! Of course, I give every series a chance to win me over and with some it takes longer than with others. But too much boredom at the beginning is a killer. Another important factor is the pace and that just has to be right. Pace is (as in music) vital to storytelling. Every story needs a certain drive and shouldn’t be too easy to guess. Fortunately, many of the very new series can surprise you with their twists, sometimes even mixing genres. The audience is being educated even.
118
European film productions added. To me, there’s still a lot of potential in the field.
What do you like about Netflix, in particular? Netflix has a good and vast selection and the video-on-demand principle is great! I can watch anytime – when, where and whatever I want. This makes it highly practical. At home, we have a large screen, ensuring the ultimate cinema experience. The ways series are produced has changed since video-on-demand has become available. Furthermore, the way the audience watches has changed accordingly. Audience rates are increasing and more and more Hollywood celebrities are getting on board. They’ve seen the potential of the genre. Of course, there’s always a black sheep among the series, but there’s a lot of good stuff out there! Happily, I see even more
In GLOW, we see women in the 80s who go their own ways, are in full command and confident with their bodies and use it powerfully. How important do you value this message in today’s time? I think it’s great for young girls to see what things were like for their mothers, as it was for mine. Back then, it was much harder for a woman to do your own thing. The time was shaped by old-fashioned societal conventions and images. Women were offered much less back then which I think is still a topic today. Equal rights and equal payment are still a currently amiss and if the audience, such as young girls start realising while watching »hey, what am I afraid of? What or who is holding me back? I only

live once, so I’ll do things my way« I’m sure we’ll be rid of these discussions soon.
What would you recommend Just do it! Many girls are often defensive, don’t dare to do many things, underestimating themselves entirely. This is partly due to how they were raised and partly due to artificially held societal norms. However, these norms only work in advertising, because individuality is harder to market. You should always dare to do things, attempt and try to live your dreams and if you fall, learn your lesson from it and get back up. If I had been afraid in the past, I had never been able to live my dream. Back then, I was focussed and uncompromising. That wasn’t always easy, I too, had to fight a couple of fights, but I never saw a difference between men and women and I sure wouldn’t have subordinated myself to it. A healthy dose of egoism and focus on your goal are important to find your way and walk it. Going so-
meone else’s way is highly unsatisfying in the long-run.
You have been the leading woman of Guano Apes since 1994. Did you always know you wanted to become a rock singer? I sure always held an affinity to art. By the age of 16, I discovered music, got a mic and together with my sister formed my first band. Grunge and Hip Hop influenced me heavily at the time. The desire to go on stage grew very fast and very big. From then, things went their way, naturally and I knew this fulfilled me and I want to intensify and pursue my efforts.
A woman in the rock business. Today as untypical as some years ago? How did you deal with prejudices or hostility? It’s true, there could be more women in the rock genre. I never encountered prejudices or hostility, luckily these were never my problem. But I also think I know
121

why that is: I didn’t fulfil the typical cliché of a woman. Back then, women in music were sweet, sexy darlings which I never aspired to be. I listened to Hip Hop, Grunge, read Spawn comics, skated, and sprayed graffiti. Also in music, the only things I was interested in were talent and performance. Therefore, I never encountered prejudices or hostility, but instead was met with respect at eye level. From both fields. Today, this is a bit easier. A woman can rock, toy with her sex appeal, and still be deemed credible. Society has become a bit milder in this respect.
Which were the best and hardest moments of your career, so far? The first golden record clearly was something very special for us as a band. Back then, I was very young, only 18 years old. SISTER-MAG.COM
Also, to hold your first own CD in your hands felt great. To win the European Music Award 2000 as best German artist was a highlight for us. Standing next to Madonna or chatting with Tina Turner – nice! One of the hardest moments for me was when I stood on stage at a concert and suddenly realised that it no longer brought me joy. We had been touring for too long desperately needed a break – which was a good call then.
GLOW is set in 1980s L.A. Pink legwarmers, backcombed hair, and loads of glitter are to be expected! How do you like the outfits of the Wrestling ladies? Hilarious. In the 80, there sure were some bad decisions when it comes to fashion – all I can say are shoulder pads and permanent waves. But they also had a few nice things which have a revival at the

The most fascinating thing about GLOW – the »Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling« – is that the series is based on a real-life phenomenon from L.A. in 1986.
GLOW was a professional women’s wrestling TV-show produced in Los Angeles which showed comically overdone women’s wrestling fights. Most of the GLOW-ladies were models or actresses with their eyes set on a career in Hollywood. Netflix tells the fictional story of what happened before the show. Producers Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch are famous for their hit show »Orange Is the New Black«. They have managed to assemble a cast where everyone will find at least one or two favourites among the known and unknown faces: Leading character Ruth SISTER-MAG.COM
Wilder is played by Alison Brie (Trudy Campbell from »Mad Men«) and fellow Mad Men actor Rich Sommer (Harry Crane in »Mad Men«) plays the character of Mark Eagan. When Ruth and Mark start an affair behind the back of Mark’s wife Debbie (Betty Gilpin) who is also Ruth’s best friend the dramatic plot twists are added to the mix. These dramatic plot-twists are at the heart of the relationships between the 14 wrestlers who come together as a messy and slightly crazy bunch to create the wrestling show. They are the ones left over from hundreds of applicants after

R E L I A R T director Sam Sylvia’s (played by Marc Maron) declaration that the show is actually about wrestling – »at least it’s not porn« is the unanimous answer of the 14 women. One of them is failed actress Ruth Wilder (Alison Brie), whose dainty figure and dark circles underneath the eyes don’t exactly scream wrestler. Even though she’s not Sam’s favourite to begin with, she manages to carve out her very own position within the league.
Stand-Up comedian Marc Maron, real-life moustache bearer and famous for his WTF-podcast (wtfpod.com), delivers a standout performance as director Sam Sylvia. Despite his 30 years of experience in showbusiness, he’s not an experienced actor – something that definitely doesn’t show in GLOW.
Many of the best scenes are those in which he has the last say: when Sam Sylvia, tired eyes behind his NHS specs and often high on cocaine, delivers the last, dry one-liner to the audience. The sympathy and excitement he feels for his 14 wrestlers is subtly shown in many scenes. 139

GLOW wants to show more than comical almost-athletes in shiny bodysuits. The trailer shows the very first scene of the series: Ruth at a casting, reading the gripping lines of the male lead. After the mistake is brought to her attention, she returns to the reality of an actress in the 1980s: the role of an unimportant secretary with one line. The GLOW-league offers Ruth and her co-wrestlers a space where they are the lead roles – even though critical voices might find fault with some of the stereotypical characters. The wrestling with its scripted background-stories,

Next to feminism, many historically important issues find their way into the show: director Sam Sylvia wants the fights to be political statements, staging the ultimate fight between Russia (Zoya, The Destroya) and the USA (blond, American beauty Liberty Belle) and naming his fighter »Welfare Queen«. A job that’s going nowhere, realizing you have lost sight of your goals or the need for slow movement: individual reasons to go on a sabbatical are manifold and it may indeed provide the opportunity to refocus on your goals or make long-held dreams come true. What are some of the most important things to consider when contemplating a sabbatical? We have compiled a list of psychological considerations and practical questions to ask yourself that may help you plan your time off.

Finishing school, getting into an apprenticeship, or university course, then landing your first job and – ideally – keeping it for the next 40 odd years? While this may have been a feasible plan for our parents, it seems a rather unlikely – and frankly undesirable – option for our generation. Today, many see their first job as a training opportunity and are happy to trade it for a better position the minute one opens up. Both, apprenticeship and university course require nothing less than your full commitment and the same is true for a job. As this leaves little or no room for our personal goals and dreams, it’s no surprise that after just
&

a few years we find ourselves questioning what exactly we are working towards. We may even discover a kind of goal vacuum and realize that we can no longer see our life’s path clearly in front of us and don’t know how to proceed. Things may not have turned out the way we expected them to. Once we have come to this realization the obvious next step is to look for a way out and a sabbatical may just be the perfect solution: taking a few months off work to get out of your daily routine and realign with yourself, listening to the voice within.
155
SISTERMAG 30 | 06 / 2017
Could a sabbatical be the solution?
If the stress and pressure of your daily work life are getting to you and you feel unable to go on like this for much longer, taking time off can be a very useful measure. It can help promote your health and represent an important step in getting your life into moving slower and reassess your habits and general lifestyle. Focusing on your dreams can be equally important and it may be time to go on that trip around the world you have wanted to take for many years. More often than not it may turn out to be a case of now or never.
Now or never? Whatever your personal reason for taking a sabbatical may be, a clear plan for your time off is your key to success. Just taking off, going on a trip or tuning out may be an option, but without a certain basic structure, a clear analysis of the underlying problem and at least a rough outline of an objective, a sabbatical will not provide a miracle cure and you will find yourself in the same draining rut upon your return.

It’s not advisable to point t o w a rd s a personal search for meaning or time off work on your CV. Yet, you still have to be truthful. You may be planning to spend your sabbatical abroad and support yourself doing odd jobs. Depending on the jobs themselves and their individual periods you may want to add them to your CV. A change of direction in your professional life can also explain a gap in your CV. Or you may simply want to
GLAM
officially declare the period as a sabbatical. You can also be straightforward if you spend your time travelling around the world; many employers now understand such a desire. Not declaring it as anything at all and going with an unexplained gap in your CV is definitely the worst option. Once you have made up your mind about these preliminary steps you can go ahead and plan your time off in detail.

Tell our readers about yourself (Who are you? How old are you? What did you do before your sabbatical?) My name is Anna, I'm 29 years old and work for le-tex publishing services in Leipzig. I’m a technical administrator for the type setting department and take care of the workflows for the automated realisation of electronical and printed publications. What did you do during your sabbatical? (Travelled the world, language courses) I took a Spanish class in Granada and toured Andalusia. SISTER-MAG.COM
How long was your sabbatical? My sabbatical was only 4 weeks long. The language course took 3 weeks, so I had one left for travelling. How did you organise your sabbatical? (By yourself? Agency? Friends?) I took care of everything by myself. The offer of language schools is big but manageable. Most of them also organise stays with host families or hostels, I just stayed in an Airbnb.

What happened to your job in the meantime?
What was your aim for your sabbatical? Did you reach it?
My employer gave me unpaid time off. Most of my tasks were taken over by dedicated colleagues but I still answered my E-Mails and took care of some problems sitting at my kitchen table.
I mainly wanted an introduction to the Spanish language. This worked very well despite the short amount of time I spent there and it motivated me to work on my skills even more. My first visit to Granada two years ago had me yearning for more, so I wanted to spend a longer period of time there. After three weeks, I fell in love with the place even more and am already dreaming of my next trip.
How did you pay for your sabbatical? – would be great if you gave us an idea for the final budget as well (to give readers an impression of how much they should save) I had been carrying the idea in my head for quite a while, so I had saved enough money. The lessons and my accommodation were around 1000€. Granada is great for a smaller budget – you can have a lot of tapas before you’ve used up your savings.

Ronda, in the Spanish province of Málaga high up the Serranía de Ronda mountains, is the textbook definition of a dramatic landscape. The scenery, the history, the people all ooze passion. Around here, every experience is a good deal more intense than elsewhere – even compared to other Andalusian villages I have visited on my travels.
ON MY OWN IN THE MOST ROMANTIC PLACE IN ALL OF SPAIN I have been travelling through Andalusia for 10 days now – on my own. Thanks to the proverbial Spanish hospitality this hasn’t been a problem. Tourists and locals alike will soon find company at their dining table. But in Ronda I do find myself all on my own for the first time – in the most romantic place in all of Spain. 167
GLAM
Now, I wouldn’t describe myself as much of a romantic but here it really hits me: this view! Those sandstone coloured rocks, the rough green of the shrubs, the unbelievably blue sky and its contrast to the picturesque white houses. More than one heart has been lost in the gorges of El Tajo. The likes of Rilke and Hemingway fell under Ronda’s spell. And I can see why, this place is truly special and you can sense it the second you get here. Maybe it’s the unique mixture of beauty and tragedy that makes Ronda the most beautiful of all the white villages. A white temptress – as beautiful as she is dangerous. With so many fights fought and so much blood shed there is still no escaping the beauty of its backdrop. In »For Whom The Bell Tolls« Hemingway writes about the Spanish civil war and how Ronda was fought over tooth and nail. The gorges became the final resting place of many fascists who were thrown into the deep by the republicans – or so the story goes. SISTERMAG 30 | 06 / 2017

The white houses cling to the gorge like honeycombs. Living here is not for the faint-hearted. And you won’t find faint-hearted people in Ronda. Courage is part of their DNA and none more so than Pedro Romero, the most famous bullfighter of all times. There was nobody more daring or more skilled. I am not fond of bullfighting, in fact I make a point of boycotting it. But in Ronda you can’t escape its cultural relevance. The local arena, built from red sandstones, isn’t just the cradle of modern Spanish bullfighting it’s also the oldest arena of its kind. The spectacular building is a

masterpiece of Spanish baroque architecture but I can’t make myself go in and explore it, it’s against my conviction.
DRAMATIC STORIES GALORE Instead I make my way along the gorge towards the bridge, the »Puente Nuevo«. The city’s landmark is one of the most photographed motifs in Ansalusia. Both the arena and the bridge were created by architect José Martin Aldehuela, the bridge was SISTER-MAG.COM
built in 1751. And it wouldn’t befit Ronda if there weren’t another dramatic story connected to it: The architect died in the very same year as the bridge was completed. Having finished work on what the he considered his greatest achievement he is said to have thrown himself of the bridge because he knew he would never be able to create anything else like it ever again. Since 1802, the bridge has connected the old and the new part of town. But seeing as this is one of the oldest cities in Spain, new is something

of a relative term. With influences ranging from the Palaeolithic cave paintings to the Celts and the Greek as well as the Romans and the Spanish much of Ronda is also down to Moorish influences (ca. 713 to 1485).
AT THE FOOT OF THE GORGE: ARABIC BATH RUINS Crossing the bridge into the old town I feel a mixture of excitement, owed to the height, and profound humility, owed to the unique scenery. The old town,

ÂťLa CiudadÂŤ, has more crooked streets and back alleys that the new town. I make my way down a narrow path with many steps leading into the gorge. As trite as it may sound but the rocks and buildings around me do make me feel tiny. At the foot of the gorge I find the old Moorish quarter San Miguel and the ruins of its Arabic baths right in its centre. Bathing culture was very important before the Christian conquest. I feel like I have unearthed a treasure. The vaulted buildings made of sandstone and clay bricks are a

testament to just how advanced Moorish bathing culture had been. I can almost hear the water lapping as I explore the building. And I swear I can smell essential oils and hear the murmur of people takings baths. The sandstone surroundings capture my imagination and I completely lose track of time.
MORE THAN JUST A TOURIST ATTRACTION My way back leads me through a series of beautiful gardens called »Jardines de Cuenca de Ronda« whose curved terraces offer stunning panoramic views of the Moorish king’s palace, the Santo Domingo convent and of course a spectacular vista of the bridge.
that any superlative you may come up with feels more than well deserved. I have the gardens almost to myself and I enjoy the loneliness. Ronda’s city centre is no insider tip by any stretch of the imagination and tourists pour in by the coachload. They explore the arena and the bridge and then have lunch at one of the many restaurants before returning to the Costa del Sol. The streets are lined by souvenir shops and small

Her love for Dick turns her onto a process of self-discovery she sees through to the end in a most painstaking manner. Exceedingly complex! Clever! And funny! A magnificent novel about art, feminism, men and women with an abundance of sensibility.

Jewellery from the Philippines COULD YOU BRIEFLY INTRODUCE YOURSELVES AND TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND? Valerie: We are twin sisters from the Philippines who have both been living in Europe for over six years (me in Zurich and Vanessa in Berlin). I founded VERA, a retailer of artisanal jewelry and accessories made by Filipino designers.
of local jewellery and accessories which we knew would resonate with women everywhere. VERA has been a way for us to reconnect with our Filipino roots and to proudly showcase that part of our identity even as we live in Europe.
Vanessa: My day job is in the management consulting industry. However, my full-time role is VERA’s cheerleader-in-chief.
WERE YOU ALWAYS INTO JEWELLERY AND WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT FILIPINO DESIGNS?
Valerie: Setting up VERA has always been a dream of ours. Each time we went back home to the Philippines, we were always impressed by the craftsmanship
Valerie: Jewellery is one way for me to cherish people, places and moments. My passion for jewellery really started as a wide-eyed, eager traveller in my early 20s. I would collect silver

bracelets and charms on my trips around Asia. Each was a souvenir not just of a place, but also of a time in my life, a reminder of who I was then and there. Vanessa: Valerie and I were fortunate that we grew up and came of age in a time when fast and anonymous fashion was not quite as pervasive as it is today. Jewellery represented special acquisitions, treats that were carefully considered and thoughtthrough, very often saved for, and cherished as pieces that reflected an emerging awareness of a personal and, hopefully, timeless style. Looking back, bracelets were our entry-level jewellery. At 20, I suppose our style was not fully formed yet, but with a lot of curiosity and some growing confidence, too, we refined our tastes with every trinket. I’m amused that the earliest purchases I made with my first real salary are accessories I would still wear today. SISTER-MAG.COM
Valerie: Living away from the Philippines for over a decade now, it feels as though I can look at the Filipino design aesthetic with fresh eyes and a renewed curiosity. What I appreciate most about Filipino design is how it reflects our rich history, from the traditions of our indigenous peoples to the influences of our colonial heritage. Our warmth and openness as a people are reflected in vibrant, colourful designs. The sentimentality and expressiveness of our culture often reveals itself in larger-thanlife pieces. Vanessa: Filipino design is far from monolithic, and hard to define. For me, it is Filipino only from the perspective of its maker, who is from the Philippines and whose works naturally imbue those undeniable traces of our heritage in some form or other. The craftsmanship of our artisans has long been celebrated but I personally believe now is a very

exciting time in Philippine design because more local designers are finding the platform and the space to introduce their unique identities to the rest of the world. There are more opportunities for us to shine the spotlight on them. We’re truly honoured that we can be a part of this in our own small way. HOW DO YOU FIND THE DESIGNERS YOU WORK WITH AND HOW DO YOU CHOOSE THE JEWELLERY PIECES FOR VERA? Vanessa: We discovered many of the designers and artisan labels through word of mouth and recommendations from friends in the fashion industry, but SISTER-MAG.COM
also through our own research on social media, magazines, and sourcing missions in the Philippines. Lately, as VERA has grown in profile, up-and-coming designers also approach us with their portfolio. Valerie: It’s both fun and challenging to decide on the pieces to feature on VERA. There’s a deeply personal element to the collection: we want VERA to be a curated space where every accessory is something we ourselves would enjoy wearing. Our goal is not just to present what is trendy and state-of-the. art, but more of what we believe confident and stylish women would cherish for years, including costume jewellery. YOU TOLD US THAT YOU HAVE VERY CLOSE CONNECTIONS TO YOUR DESIGNERS - COULD YOU TELL US YOUR FAVOURITE STORIES ABOUT

WHO THEY ARE AND WHERE THEY COME FROM? Valerie: Beyond offering wellmade and unique accessories, VERA’s mission is to build a connection between the artisan who made the jewellery and the woman who wears it. With a lot of fast fashion on offer, it’s easy to overlook the people who actually make what we wear, so we’ve made it a point to feature our designers. One example is young artisan Merriam Batara (her handmade silk tassels appear in this issue of sisterMag) who comes from a family that traditionally does embroidery and beading. We worked with Merriam, who has an amazing talent in needlework, to create hand-stitched earrings with crystals and semi-precious stones. emerging artisans like Merriam in conceptualizing designs and reaching a global market are part of VERA’s mission. Another designer we feature is Ken Samudio, who has a background in marine biology. Despite having no formal training in fashion, he ventured into accessory design and in 2014, he was recognized among Vogue Italia’s Talents for Accessories - a first for a Filipino! Ken incorporates beads from recycled plastic bottles, recycled sea glass and other sustainablysourced materials to create nature-inspired accessories. His workshop also employs women from disadvantaged communities. Dianne Espera of SEPA (whose handpainted earrings also appear in sisterMag) hails from Cebu, a city known for its wooden crafts and furniture. Her grandmother Sepa was a prominent maker of colourful handcarved and

handpainted wooden ornaments, mostly sold as souvenirs. Cebu’s wooden handicrafts industry is struggling, but Dianne is contributing to its revival by focusing on fashion with her line of tropical-inspired jewellery. Think parrot-fruit- and flower earrings carved out of wood! Dianne trains young women in the art of wooden accessorymaking, just as she learned from her grandmother, and employs skilled, older artisans who have lost their jobs when small shops in the community shut down. Vanessa: A final example is Natalya Lagdameo, whose signature pieces are a walk through Filipino history. She is noted for restoring jewellery particularly from the Philippines’ Spanish colonial era, such as the traditional tamborin necklace, and giving them a modern touch. Natalya also works with the Ifugaos, a group from the northern Cordillera region, to produce gold-plated brass pieces using traditional sandcasting SISTER-MAG.COM
methods. HOW DO YOU LIKE WORKING TOGETHER AS SISTERS AND HOW DO YOU MANAGE TO WORK FROM TWO DIFFERENT COUNTRIES? Valerie: I am lucky I get to work with someone I trust 100%, not only because Vanessa and I are sisters, but because we share the same values and aesthetic. We know almost instinctively the direction we want VERA to go, the kind of collection we want to offer and the spirit behind our brand and mission. In many ways, VERA is an extension of us. Of course, our tastes sometimes vary, but that also helps to broaden our perspectives and improve. Thankfully, Zurich and Berlin are only an hour’s flight apart so it’s been very easy to meet in person. We talk to each other every day. Vanessa: Now that VERA is expanding into Germany, it is an advantage for me to be based in Berlin. While I often gravitate towards the same beautiful

THIS YEAR, WE AT SISTERMAG REALLY WANT TO FOCUS ON THE TOPIC »MODERN HANDMADE«. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN TO YOU AND HOW IS IT REPRESENTED IN YOUR SHOP?
Vanessa: I agree with my sister that there’s an undeniable luxury to handmade pieces. They communicate so much about the artisan who laboured over each item. Once you hold a piece from VERA, you will see the care and craftsmanship, and I believe that, aside from the aesthetic quality of the item, is what makes it a delight to have.
Valerie: Handmade is the new luxury. Nearly all of the pieces shown on VERA are handmade works of art. In an age of fast, cheap and anonymous fashion, it is meaningful to wear something that has actually been made with care by skilled and talented hands, by real people. At VERA, we proudly showcase handmade accessories because we recognize the work and passion it takes to create - to mold, to paint, to stitch, to solder, to sketch, to weave - something of beauty. Handmade products are also often of a limited quantity,

I am particularly drawn to 2017’s Pantone colour of the year, »greenery« because of its vibrancy and freshness, and it represents the tropical vibe of the Philippines rather well too. Vanessa: As people who know me well would attest, my closet is devoid of colour, with the exception of blue, khaki, and the occasional green for hunting. I am partial to neutrals. But I’ve resolved to be more adventurous and to venture out of my comfortable palette, and this sisterMag cover speaks volumes. This year, we are expanding our roster of labels to provide even more choice of amazing products for women. In the future, we hope to create a successful social business through VERA that can also support training and education for promising young designers and people from our indigenous communities.
WHAT ARE FUTURE GOALS AND PLANS THAT YOU HAVE FOR VERA? SISTER-MAG.COM
