DEAR SISTERMAG READERS Would you like to be able to look into someone's head sometimes? To see how they think? Many hours a day we are busy imagining scenarios and situations before they actually happen. This behaviour is particularly pronounced in the HYPOCHONDRIAC – and is psychologically stressful for humans. But the hypochondriac is specifically concerned with diseases, always and constantly imagining their own death or embattled with a perilous illness. What is sisterMAG talking about, you ask? We came up with the idea for this very individual mix of themes through a film evening with the 1960s classic »SEND ME NO FLOWERS,« starring DORIS DAY, ROCK HUDSON, AND TONY RANDALL. We immediately dedicated an article to the dream trio in this issue. In the film, Rock Hudson plays an obsessed hypochondriac who prepares and plans his own funeral. In ISSUE 37 we have devoted ourselves to so many different topics that we sometimes had to chuckle

to ourselves: In addition to recurring film articles, there is plenty of information about flowers. Because even if you no one’s sending you flowers, you can enjoy our TABLE OF THE MONTH , browse through the most beautiful florist Instagram accounts, or create a flower paradise on your own balcony. CONTRIBUTORH Even if the movie »Send me no flowers» is a classic 60s comedy, it is also based on one of the fundamental fears of many people: illness and death. We interviewed three of our creative stars from sisterMAG N°37 about their biggest fears and also learned a lot about their flower preferences.

Illustrator and Parisian Maelle Rajoelisolo made the illustration for the film article on »Send me no flowers«. This is not the first time she has embellished sisterMAG with her lovely illustrations. What are your favourite flowers? My favorite flowers are mimosas and peonies; but mimosas hold a very special place in my heart because they’re also a malagasy song that I’ve loved since I was a child. It reminds me of Madagascar, the country my parents came from! For what occasion do you like to give flowers? I love to give a beautiful bouquet on every special occasions, especially birthdays. My friends love flowers too, so it’s always a pleasure to give them that kind of gift!

The term »film diva« describes a »celebrated film actress who becomes a talking point with her »eccentric affectations«.

A dichotomous definition that symbolises the ambivalent relationship between women and film. For, classical Hollywood was an entirely male domain. Thanks to the feminist movements of the 20th century, this rigid imbalance is now softened. However, the current #METOO discussion shows that certain behavioural patterns and power structures prevail.

The role, importance, and influence of women to film and inside the film industry is closely linked to the history of the emancipation movements of the 20th century. Up until the late 1960s and early 1970s, even big female film stars had to face the discrepancy between being adored on screen and a non-existing power and influence on set. That's because there were only two possible roles for women to play in Hollywood: the Good or the Bad – the content of which was adapted throughout the years.

In contrast to this role, there was the opportunity to play a so-called »fallen« woman; one whose sexual activities

in psychoanalysis. In pop culture, the term has been immortalised in the hit series »Sex and the City«, where the newlywed characters CHARLOTTE and TREY MACDOUGAL struggle with severe sexual difficulties.

First steps

In 1915, Theda Bara created the role of the Vamp while acting a »FALLEN ONE«: Accordingly, a Vamp is a woman who attracts men with her beauty and exoticism and wrecks them without a sign of remorse. This role made THEDA BARA one of the first sex symbols of film. However, from today’s perspective, the concept of this role is even more difficult, as the Vamp is always portrayed as an exotic woman of exotic – that is, not white – origin. Thus, making the case for white normativity.

After the First World War lifted women into more active (former male) positions on the job market and helped them achieve some level of financial independence, the cinematic image of the woman had to follow. Along with long plaits, dusty Victorian moral concepts were cast aside. The Flappers became the new role models of modern women. CLARA BOW was Hollywood’s personification of this concept, but her roles depicted a compromise of reality: While her characters go out,

The writers of Hollywood outlined a thin moral line that decides upon the fate of the flappers in films: Those who are moral and virtuous at the heart get to the altar, all the others suffer tragedies or even death.

beauty and sold-out cinemas. After the collapse of the global economy that drove more and more women into the working world, the audience longed for strong role models. And until

1934, it gets them: MARLENE DIETRICH plays with the optical gender boundaries by seducing men wearing a suit and a tailcoat (»MOROCCO«, 1930), Greta Garbo declares in »QUEEN CHRISTINA« (1933) that she'd rather die alone than to get married, and Mae West even wrote her own dialogues. A quantum leap! The divas of that time were not only strong women but also sexually active ones: Through the means of cinema, they were staged as goddess-like beings who played off their sexual charms and were far away from the normal everyday woman. They were role models for them and objects of desire for the male audience. But that was not only due to their acting talents. SISTER-MAG.COM

in full brightness. This »HALO EFFECT« was preferably used to let actresses appear radiant and, thus, more attractive (to the male characters and audience). They got even more objectified with the so-called »MALE GAZE«, a technique by which the camera became the eye of the male actor and lets us see the woman through them. Both techniques are subject to a fetishisation and cultural superelevation of the female, white appearance. The glamorous robes and the styling of the divas are also beneficial for that. The film »GILDA« with Rita Hayworth in the leading role is a prime example for these techniques.

During last year’s Berlinale we had the opportunity to interview the Grande Dame of German film, Iris Berben. We talked about her association and feelings connected to the colours grey and yellow. Her inspiring answers kept buzzing through our heads long after. This year, Miss Berben again took some time to answer our »great questions« (in her words) on the topic of films. While talking about possible parts, role models, and the unavoidable #metoo debate, we again gained deep insights and are looking forward to another reunion soon.

WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL FAVOURITE FILM? I’m afraid I really can’t say, because when you get older, one's taste changes so much. There are films you once called »THE BEST film of all films«. But then, you get new impressions. I absolutely loved MAGNOLIA. I thought that FIGHT CLUB was a

great film. LAST TANGO IN PARIS was the film we all thought, »Wow, they’re daring.« When you say something like that today, you enter an entirely different discussion. The great thing about our industry is the change of generations and the related change of seeing the world and certain topics. I love that.

IF YOU COULD CREATE YOUR OWN FILM CHARACTER, HOW WOULD THEY BE? WOULD IT BE A WOMAN OR WOULD YOU ALSO PLAY A MAN?

IS THERE A FILM DIVA OR OTHER WOMAN THAT STILL INSPIRES YOU TODAY? There is one woman who is incredibly fascinating to me: SUSAN SARANDON. I value women who use their capabilities, and she is a very political person. Her films and her whole work make her something that’s called »uncomfortable«. I don’t share this opinion, since I believe that to be uncomfortable can be very refreshing for the industry. Liz Taylor was someone I always valued as well. When I think back to »CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF« … oh, those are films I’d have loved to act in. I think that for the time she was in – the 70s, 60s, 50s – she was very far ahead with her inner power. Those are two female icons that instantly spring to my mind. But I’ll probably come up with lots more later [...] but it’s always like that. The interview is over and you think, »Well, why did SHE didn’t come to my mind earlier?«

Well, yes, I already played men in the comedy series »SKETCHUP« and I did it so convincingly that even my mother didn’t recognize me [laughs]. That’s a challenge and it’s connected to the curiosity we have: »What is it like to be of another gender?« I like that there is another(!) gender, because I disapprove that we repeatedly blend into a homogenous mass. I appreciate different characters in the world. Nonetheless, there are some structures we need to change! Structures that have grown over decades and centuries and that are hard to break. We recently noticed it in the #METOO discussions with regards to the abuse of power. In this discussion, I do have doubts that if women are given the same opportunity, they wouldn’t also abuse their power. To me, this is a

question of character. For, we all know an infinite number of men in powerful positions who don’t exploit such a position. That’s why I always think that this is a very fragile issue that you shouldn’t discuss in the same heated mood as it is done now. But, to return to the initial question, I’d love to be an animal. I have a dog that’s almost 17 years old and blind and deaf, and a part of the family. I’m anything but esoteric but I always think, »You took him into your family. What does he think about that?« I’d love to be an animal as well as a man. Or maybe an old gnarled tree, that would be nice too. A tree that has been standing for so long and that many have worked themselves off against. […] Yet, it remains standing!

LOOKING BACKM WHICH ROLE IS STILL WITH YOU UP UNTIL TODAY? Last year, I played a woman for four months: »THE RECORDER«. She's a woman who is overlooked by everybody, a prime example of a plain Jane. As an actress, this is a good surface to work with, also outwardly. Nobody looks at her fully. She completely gets lost in the shuffle. But she listens in on everything with her headphones, all day. She calmly sits there when criminals confess their crimes

or when they explain themselves or lie. Since it took four months, it was incredibly exhausting for me, as I thought about it a lot. What happens with you when you listen so closely, and about so many details like this? That’s a story that does something to this woman. There was another film I made. Basically, it was about the movement of 1968 in Germany. A woman who went into hiding and her 30-year-old daughter who wants to find her. The woman is guilty of a crime that’s deeply

embedded in German history. This, too, is a role I often think about. For, as we deal with our everyday life, I wonder about the many things politics do, how they influence us, their legacy, and what it could leave us with. WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE PROSPECTS OF GERMAN FILM? WHERE IS IT GOING? We have such a great potential of really powerful writers, directors, cameramen, actors, and actresses. And I’m not only

talking about those who are hyped and famous. However, our problem is that too many films are produced and, thus, they don’t have the opportunity of being shown in the cinema. We need to find a system for that. This is the most difficult task there is because which criteria should you use for the selection? We’ve been dealing with this for a long time already. The attendance figures remain the same and the money remains the same, yet more films are done with less money. This way, the films don’t stand a chance of being seen. Some years ago, I was part of the grant commission of the FFA [German federal film

board] that observes and assesses films. There, I could tell if someone had potential: »Oh, that’s a plant we have to water so it grows.« And it turned out that way. But you have to provide this freedom! Today, we all live under this pressure: »The talent has to be there and if the first attempt failed, you don’t want the second one, and when the first attempt is big, the second one has to be even bigger.« That’s not creativity and not art! I wish that we would develop good output capabilities so that the German film continues to exist and is visible as a cultural asset. We must not waste anything.

In the tradition of Moliere’s THE IMAGINARY INVALID (1673) , this Hollywood comedy by director NORMAN JEWISON is about married hypochondriac George Kimball (ROCK HUDSON ). While at his doctor’s for a routine check-up, he overhears his physician Dr. Morrissey talking to a colleague about a fatally ill patient. The doctor emphasizes that he has not told his patient

out of empathy about his nearing d e a t h . G e o r g e jumps to the (wrong) conclusions: He is the one sick to death and has almost no time left. IN SEND ME NO FLOWERS, THE WITTY DIALOGUES DO NOT ONLY CONTAIN QUESTIONS OF GENDER BUT ALSO CLASS CONFLICTS AND THE SUPERFICIALITY OF THE MIDDLE CLASSES

battle of the sexes between (mostly rich) men and women. Literary forerunners are for example stage comedy by William Shakespeare like THE TAMING OF THE SHREW or MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING . Its focus on dialogue testifies to the invention of the new medium of sound film during the 1930s. The screwball comedy rather celebrates the new seemingly endless possibilities to use language in film. The new sound technology generates a new kind of linguistic humour, which SISTER-MAG.COM

focuses on witty repartee, i.e. a quick form of speech and witty reply. Until today, such quick dialogues are popular in comedies such as in GILMORE GIRLS . The relation of the sexes takes centre stage in the narratives of the screwball comedy, mostly between rich women and men in the context of emancipation. Due to the Hays Production Code, which prohibited representations of sexuality, adultery and prostitution on screen from 1934 onwards, screwball

pitched ball that curves in the direction opposite to that of a normal curve ball. The eccentric characters in screwball comedies are also bending the laws of normality, when they challenge the boundaries of conventionality. Laughing turns into a liberating moment about the inheren otherness of the characters. Thus on a production-aesthetic level, Send me no flowers uses diverse filmic cutting techniques to introduce George’s exaggerated comedies depict verbal and visual double entendres, which were easy to decipher for the audience. In SEND ME NO FLOWERS , the witty dialogues do not only contain questions of gender but also class conflicts and the superficiality of the middle classes, when Judy gossips about their neighbours or George’s friend Bert tells him about targeting widows. The term »SCREWBALL« is a slang word derived from baseball, which means a

the beautiful designs of these years, the squeaky and joyous looks, because these films picture a blessed period of the 20th century. Or better yet, they create a positive image of those years. After overhearing a phone call of his doctor, the hypochondriac George Kimball believes that he will die soon and tries to bring his wife and an old schoolmate together. Shethinks that he wants to detract from an affair. Only at the end is the whole story cleared up.

The three films made Doris Day a star and all of her films became blockbusters despite only being nominated for an Oscar for her role in »Pillow Talk«. For many American women, she was the well-behaved counterpart of other actresses like Marilyn Monroe, who used their femininity in an eroticised way. Music has existed ever since films were made. In the silent movie era, filmmakers and viewers had to settle for a dramatic piano to underline the scenes. Later it was contractually stipulated that the screen heroes should sing in their films. Even when they couldn't do it well. Nowadays, there are hardly any films in which people sing. If so, they are called »musical films«. Sometimes they even win Oscars. That's probably why I'm still surprised that many screen stars have a second job or at least a lifelong passion in addition to their main gig. Often, it is music. But why? Actors should live and be emphatic for their profession. Of course, this plays into the hands of music as well. Art related to one's voice has always been en vogue. And so I went in search of 10 singing actresses and asked myself the question, »What came first: The chicken or the egg?«

»Even she's singing now!« I'm sure all actresses who sing have heard this saying at least once. I've noticed that this is something one don't like to associate with serious music-making and film stars. The cliché about talentless actors who only take the microphone in their hands because of their privileged position is common. And of course the cliché can be true. But that's not always the case. To be honest, the combination of acting and singing is a match made in heaven – similar to gin and tonic. It just fits.

In addition, music has a profoundly intensive effect on people who spend long periods of time away from home as part of their work in the performing arts. Almost all actresses I know love singing. However, their great love of music often takes place under the radar. Some say that this is due to how tough the music industry is, while others believe that there is simply more work in film and television. The fact is that most of the actresses on my Top 10 list were singers before they became film stars. Like DORIS MARY ANN DAY, for example. »EVERYBODY'S DARLING« actually had a life before »Que Sera Sera«. Did you know that the tall blonde with German roots turned night into day as a young girl in jazz clubs? In 1944, long before her film career, Doris had made her first No. 1 hit with »SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY«.

Instead of time spent at the recording studio, this meant long days on set filming four movies in a row. Not bad, but not Lina’s dream. Her fan base grew steadily with each film (mostly girls between 8 and 12) and the movies all sold very well – surely one of the reasons Lina is still making music today.

Her debut, »Nachtblende«, was released in 2000, followed by her English jazz album »Favorites« in 2004. She is particularly fond of Jewish classics from pre-war Germany.

9 BARDOT Which brings us to BARDOT herself. Bardot was known for her erratic, dramatic lifestyle – many affairs, a lot of alcohol, and some suicide attempts adorn her biography. No wonder »B.B.«, as she was called, had recorded songs and released albums with Serge Gainsbourg, the rebel of the music scene at the time. The two lovebirds had not only recorded the classic »BONNIE & CLYDE« during their short romance, but also produced the hits »Harley Davidson« and »Je t'aime... moi non plus«. B.B. had the latter banned because she found her voice on the recording too obscene. Together with Jane Birkin, Gainsbourg's later partner, the song then mutated into a world success before the animal rights activist released the recordings in 1986.

ANKE ENGELKE Let's close with the jill of all trades, ANKE ENGELKE. What can Anke E., who was born in Canada and educated in three languages, not do? The fantastic presenter, actress, and entertainer sang in the front row of the popular entertainment show »Musik ist Trumpf« as a child. When she was 10 years old, there was a duet with Heino. At the age of 11, one with Udo Jürgens. She has been a permanent member of the »FRED KELLNER UND DIE FAMOSEN SOULSISTERS« with whom she's toured every year since 1989. A few years ago she also founded the »Chor der Muffeligen«. She invited people who were tired of life and sad to play music weekly. The goal? The 40-member choir should find happiness by singing together. The experiment was a complete success. Obviously,

When I sat in the lecture hall many years ago during my medical studies, and as the discussion touched on diseases of various parts of the body, I felt something in my own anatomy. Not a pain, but I »felt« it – whether pressure on my eye sockets on the topic of ophthalmology or gravitation toward my right upper abdomen when it came to the treatment of liver diseases. I was young and healthy at the time, but these inhibitions conveyed a somatic feeling in my psyche. Later, in the years of my practical work, this fortunately no longer played a role. I am grateful for this, because there are a large

number of people who see small physical discomforts or changes as proof that they are suffering from one illness or another. Above all, a fear of cancer is particularly prevalent.

In the international classification system of human diseases, the condition of suffering from imagined illness without objective evidence can be considered a mental disorder (somatoform disorder), commonly known as hypochondria or fear of disease. Compulsive, repetitive examination of one's own body for signs of disease is typical. SISTER-MAG.COM

The symptoms described by hypochondriac patients relate to all organs and are very complex. Even if no pathological changes can be detected, these results are not or only briefly believed. Repeated examinations are sought, especially as the addresses of doctors frequently change. In Germany, a guideline was created with the participation of various medical associations to facilitate the medical procedure, treatment, and care of those affected. Hypochondriacs come in many variations. Frequently, childhood experiences (serious illnesses in the child's environment), frightening forms of education, or a certain personality type are the cause of the disorder. Stress, negative experiences with

Between 700 and 1000 A.D. , Islamic peoples invaded the south of Europe and spread cotton to Spain, Portugal, and the south of Italy. Now everybody wanted to have it; sea routes to India were discovered to ensure the replenishment of this coveted resource.

People had already experienced it many thousands of years ago. In MEXICO , INDIA and CHINA , discoveries of cotton show pre-Christian use. In ANCIENT ROME , the noble citizens decorated themselves with this cloth.

WOOL FROM A TREE? You are wrong. The desired threads can be found in the FRUITS of cotton plants. Those plants from the mallow family grow to one to three metres high, blossom in yellow, red, or white, and develop fruits the size of a walnut. 1764 In 1764, the Englishman JAMES HARGREAVES developed a spinning frame (»SPINNING JENNY« ) that made it possible to spin six or more threads. This wasn’t possible before; the weavers had to work with a manually produced weft thread whose preparation needed more workers – normally the wives of the weavers. James Hargreaves was chased, his property and his machines were destroyed, and he had to flee. But the progress couldn’t be stopped. It was also possible to clean the raw material better in a machine (»COTTON GIN« ), which enabled mass production. The triumph of the cotton fibre was sealed and has endured until today. Cotton is still one of the most profitable natural products in the world. Brazil, China, India, Mali, Tanzania, Uzbekistan and

COTTON BY FAR OUTPACED THE VOLUME AND, TO SOME EXTENT, THE QUALITY OF OTHER TEXTILES. There is a large amount of various cotton plants with different characteristics. They are one third of the raw material of all produces textiles; as a natural fibre, their percentage is even many times higher. The

main scope of application is textiles of different forms, mere or interwoven with other fibres. Their applicability also includes cosmetics, surgical dressings and the production of paper. The plant can even be used to produce oil. The global and universal character of the history of cotton encouraged writers at to process the problems connected to it. GERHART HAUPTMANN’S 1892 drama »THE WEAVERS« describes the uprising of Silesian cotton weavers in 1844, which was a reaction to their miserable working conditions justified by the purchase of substandard cotton.

Without cotton, we would have to waive every fashion novelty; fashion designers would have less work, the prêt-à-porter runways in Paris would be empty, and we would miss the cosy and caressing feeling of the soft cotton linen every night. Long live cotton! 85

Plants do not run away or make noise. And yet they communicate with each other. Plants have developed their own ways of conversation, and not just among other plants. Only slowly do we begin to understand the language of green silence.

Plants do not run away and make no noise. That is why they are often still regarded as inferior lifeforms. But more and more research shows that plants are intelligent and communicate with each other. The mower thunders over the lawn. It is then short, green, and fragrant. The grass seems

to accept being shaved without complaint. But an analytical view into the roots and stems of each individual blade of grass would reveal something completely different: There are traces of electric action that can be measured. If you look closely. It's just that hardly anyone does.

Ian Baldwin is now head of the MPI (Max Planck Institute) for Chemical Ecology in Jena and investigates how plant communication can be used to enable more ecological agriculture. Since plants can neither run away nor strike, they have developed chemical weapons. Tobacco, for example, produces nicotine to protect itself from predators. Other plants synthesize a kind of aspirin as soon as they are infected with a virus. Plants have an immune defence, just like humans and animals. When greedy caterpillars attack a cornfield, the whole field »screams« for help with a sweet fragrance to attract wasps. They deposit their larvae in the caterpillars, which consume them from the inside. The scent of a freshly mown lawn could therefore be a kind of collective cry for help.

They converse chemically with other species as well as with some animal species. Researchers were able to show that trees in the forest know exactly which seedlings emerged from their own seeds after they were scattered. As Charles Darwin suspected, roots are capable of more than just absorbing water and nutrients. They form a kind of network with millions of tiny roots. A plant with a tiny root can perceive up to 20 different stimuli. The Italian botanist STEFAN MANCUSO is convinced of this. In an exciting TED talk, he fascinates his audience with the unusual world of plant language:

A single rye plant has 14 million roots, with around 11 million root tips measuring a total distance of 600 kilometres. The researcher believes that these roots are organized like a computer network. He therefore called his laboratory in Florence the »International Laboratory of Plant Neurology,« but his theses on intelligent plants are still met with great scepticism among some colleagues.

Trees in a forest have an even more gigantic network than rye. A kind of underground Internet, with hub and motherboards, where a lot of information flows together. The plant roots cooperate with fungal mycelia: The mushrooms lend their wide root network to the trees to exchange information. Here, messenger substances dissolved in water are sent like e-mails and read from the roots – so fast that some scientists even compare the forest web with ultra-fast fiber-optic Internet. (Scientifically these networks are called CMNs - common mycelial networks).

For years, biologists have suspected that plants can even produce and »hear« sounds. MONICA GAGLIANO from the University of Western Australia in Perth had long been ignored when she spoke about talking plants. In 2010 and 2011 she sent her results to six scientific journals for publication. »It was rejected as something impossible,« the researcher said in an interview in The Scientist Magazine. It was to be another year before her work was published. In her experiment, the neuro-botanist was able to show how pea plants »hear« nearby water. The plants were able to distinguish between the sound of water from a recording and real, rippling water. The roots grew in the direction of the real water source.

British researchers found another »flower language« about five years ago. Flowering plants not only attract insects by their colour, but also by building up an electric field. The pollinators are then attracted as if they were lured by pulsating neon signs. As soon as a bee or bumblebee has harvested nectar and taken the pollen, the electric field of the flower changes so that the next bee can save itself the journey.

We could determine that the Chelsea Flower Show is indeed one of London society's most prestigious events, at the same time representing the dawn of its summer season. During the week before the exhibition, the BBC and other major British daily newspapers report every detail of the show on their front pages. As it opens, the Chelsea Flower Show becomes the focus

of all media while the rest of the world takes a back seat for five days – for the BBC, at least. So, what awaits the inclined garden lover? The exhibition presents over 20 show gardens designed by the most renowned British and international garden designers and architects over a space spanning around 10 hectares. This is made possible by wealthy sponsors,

as a show garden costs around 250,000 pounds to display. On the other hand, it offers a unique showcase for British flower growers, who have the opportunity to present their latest floral treasures alongside a proven and established programme. In another section you will find everything the passionate amateur gardener needs for their work â&#x20AC;&#x201C; from handmade pieces to waterproof leather boots, precious forged tools, and special fertilizer for roses and irises. After reaching the Chelsea Royal Hospital via subway and a short walk, we entered the exhibition grounds via the north entrance. Although about 40,000 tickets had been sold for the day, there was no feeling of overcrowding. We used the first hours to visit the show gardens, which really impressed us. In the show gardens, the horticultural designers present their craftsmanship, artistic and design skills surrounding a theme of their choice.

One can imagine that planning and preparing such a spectacle takes several months. As is always the case, art is art, and not everything corresponds to one's own taste. But it is fascinating nonetheless. Be it the skilful interplay of light and shadow, the integration of water basins and other design elements, or simply the originality, as in the model of a retirement garden, suitable for when the maintenance of one's garden is no longer as effortless as previous life stages. We have taken suggestions and ideas with us, and will possibly implement them in due time.

Some things are also strange the stand of this year's Guest of Honour from Thailand, for example. And yet another display is simply funny: the oversized installation of a typical British afternoon tea, complete with a pot, cups, and scones. In the late afternoon, our energy to commit among the stands of retailers and manufacturers of useful accessories is almost gone. Even if the boss himself demonstrates how waterproof his handmade leather boots are. We have fewer rainy days

in Germany, after all. Of course, one could find strength at cream tea, but at 30 pounds per person, this indulgence is again reserved for the upper class.

OUR CONCLUSION: THE CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW IS HIGHLY INTERESTING – FOR GARDEN AND FLOWER LOVERS – AND AN ABSOLUTE MUST FOR FANS OF THE BRITISH WAY OF LIFE. For me, a so-called patanta (cover) with an inflatable mattress proved to do just the trick, making it very comfortable and very inexpensive at the same time. The decommissioned train tracks have been transformed into a park, running from the hip Meatpacking District all the way up to Midtown. They offer spectacular views of iconic intersections, the sundrenched Hudson River, or the ever-changing cityscape in the form of the Hudson Yards construction project. In spring and summer in particular, the public "terrace"

boasts a variety of greenery variety. And thanks to eyecatching art, sculptures, graffiti, and other creative projects, there is always something to look at. Funnily enough, Bloom & Wild was founded by two men in 2013 by Aron Gelbard and Ben Stanway in London. Aron sat on the train and wanted to thank some friends for their hospitality by giving them flowers. We start between 8 and 9 in the morning and, first of all, have breakfast – in England, it’s typically porridge ;-) With a cup of coffee in our hands, we reply to the first e-mails. On Mondays, we have our Monday meeting with all colleagues and talk about the last and the upcoming week. This helps us focus and prioritize. Then, we have appointments, evaluations, and plans for the next big campaigns, like mother’s day or our first workshop in Germany. It never gets boring and, of course, we always have fresh

flowers in our office, providing for a good mood. On Fridays, we sign off earlier and finish the week with team drinks and games or flower workshops for colleagues. Everything is very relaxed with us; we have a great atmosphere and support each other.

I mostly use regular card stock paper. 175

I use about 30 sheets of paper assorted in colour and it takes about 1 to 2 days to make a bouquet, with many breaks every hour to rest my hands and to research for more inspiration. I cut everything by hand to really capture the details of real flowers – no two flowers look the same. I love my Martha Stewart glue gun. The low temp option on this glue gun has the perfect amount of heat but is not too hot to burn you. I have gone through so many glue guns in the past but since I have found this one, I think it is one of the best out there. IF YOU COULD PICK A FLOWER THAT REPRESENTS YOUR PERSONALITY BEST, WHAT FLOWER WOULD THAT BE?

It has to be dahlia. The repetitive petals talk to the musician in me since repeating and practicing really makes perfect. It is also the one flower I have made where I was fully satisfied with the outcome.

I always wanted to write a paper flower how-to book, and I had many pages written, but I took a break from it after having my first baby. I haven't looked at it again but I hope to write a book soon so I could better share my tips on how to make paper flowers.

Pineapple-GingerTurmeric Cake ALMOND-COCONUT BASE 240 g coconut flakes 270 g ground almonds 170 ml milk 20 ml water

Cake tray with the dimensions 20x30 cm

THE ALMOND-COCONUT BASE First mix the ground almonds, coconut flakes, and a pinch of salt in a large bowl. Add milk and water and work everything together with your hands until the dough is even. Then place the dough in a baking pan (e.g. rectangular) and spread evenly on the base and sides. The dough can be evened out at the end with the help of a glass. Ready? Put in the fridge for 2-3 hours to make the base really firm.

A pinch of salt FILLING 160 g fresh pineapple pieces 600 ml pineapple juice (without sugar) 2 limes 1 lemon 40 g fresh ginger, peeled 1/2 tsp turmeric 5 eggs 120 g butter 250 g sugar 6 gelatine sheets

(TIP: To avoid clumps, add 2-3 tablespoons of the mixture to the gelatine and stir until smooth. Then stir this gelatine mixture).

THE PINEAPPLE-GINGER-TURMERIC FILLING First, place the gelatine sheets in a bowl of cold water. Melt the butter in a small pan and put it aside. Clean and chop the fresh pineapple. Cut ginger into small pieces (alternatively you can juice the ginger or use ready-made ginger juice). Squeeze lemon and lime juice into a large pot. Add pineapple juice, pineapple pieces, ginger, eggs, sugar, turmeric and melted butter. Heat the mixture on the stove over medium heat. Make sure that the mixture does not boil, otherwise clumps may form. Keep the temperature consistent for approx. 13 minutes, stirring the mixture regularly. Put the pan aside and let it cool. Remove the gelatine sheets from the water and squeeze out any excess water. Put them into the pot and stir vigorously until the gelatine is completely dissolved. PLACE THE PINEAPPLE, GINGER, AND TURMERIC FILLING ON THE FIRM BASE AND ALLOW THE CAKE TO SOLIDIFY OVERNIGHT IN THE REFRIGERATOR.

WITH LEMON CREAM AND FRESH BLUEBERRIES FOR THE DOUGH 2 tbsp butter 4 eggs 120 ml milk 65 g flour 2 tbsp sugar

THE LEMON CREAM FILLING Put all the ingredients of the filling – the lemon juice and the grated lemon peel, the sugar, the eggs, and the butter – in a saucepan and bring to a medium heat. Stir continuously with a whisk to keep the cream in motion. Especially important: The cream should never boil, otherwise it will curdle. After patiently stirring for 10 minutes, the cream should have a nice thickness. Let the lemon cream cool.

A pinch of salt FOR THE LEMON CREAM FILLING 2 lemons; juice and zest 50 g sugar 2 eggs 3 tsp butter DECORATION Blueberries Icing sugar

THE DOUGH Preheat oven to 220°C. Put eggs, milk, flour, sugar, and a pinch of salt in a large bowl and mix well. Put butter into an ovenproof pan and let it melt in the preheated oven. Add the prepared mixture and put the pan back in the oven. After approx. 15-20 minutes, the dough should rise and bake to a nice golden brown. Take it out of the oven. Let the pancakes cool (they will sink a little). Fill the pancakes with the prepared lemon cream and garnish with blueberries. Sprinkle with icing sugar and serve.

WHO ARE YOU, WHERE ARE YOU FROM, WHAT DO YOU DO FOR A LIVING?

I own a small studio in Seoul, South Korea where I decorate cake with »flowers« and run many workshops. ON @CAKE_PINO, WE SEE WONDERFUL CAKES WITH FLOWERS ALL OVER – HOW DID YOU LEARN TO CREATE THESE WORKS OF ART?

I learned the craft from a »flower cake« baker. My experience in the design industry and my artistic studies helped me a lot.

WHICH KIND OF ICING DO YOU USE?

I only use buttercream, for the sanding and the icing of the cake to the decoration DO YOU DESIGN NEW FLOWERS BY YOURSELF OR DO YOU WATCH MANY TUTORIALS?

On one hand, I interact with other instructors and bakers. On the other hand, I try many things on my own in my studio. I also like to view works from other industries for inspiration. WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE CAKE UNDER THE DECORATION?

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO CREATE SUCH A CAKE?

It depends a lot on the extent of the project. When I’m fast I need about four to five hours from the cake to the decoration.

My favourite cakes are caramel and mocha. What I love most about the caramel cake is the production of the caramel. The extraordinary taste is quite popular among my customers as well!

Preparation for the BUTTERCREAM PREPARE ALL INGREDIENTS AT ROOM TEMPERATURE Use the detached egg white to make a meringue in a pot.

Put the sugar in a pan and heat it up to 118 °C. A thermometer will help you reach the exact temperature. Pour the boiled sugar into the middle of the meringue and mix it up. Let the mixture cool down to 28 °C with fan. When the mixture has cooled, add the butter.

TIP: HERE, IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO MAKE SURE THE BUTTER IS AT ROOM TEMPERATURE (19~20°)

Add some drops of vanilla extract to it.

Mix everything on high speed for 5 minutes. Remove the pot and mix it slowly with a dough scraper for 30 seconds.

Take a cooled cake base and spread a little portion of the buttercream on top.

Place the second cake base on top and apply another portion of the buttercream. Repeat this until you have only one cake base left. Turn the last cake base upside down before putting it on top.

Spread all of the remaining cream on the top and sides of the cake; apply until you get a smooth surface.

Tutorial PIPING AN ANEMONE

Shape five petals with an icing bag on the parchment paper. Use petal tip #104.

For the second layer of petals, repeat the process again. Make sure you place the petals in between the petals from the first floor. Draw fine lines on the outside of the bead as well as thin radial lines right next to the bead on the petals. Use petal tip size #0.

Afterwards, add a round and plump bead in the centre of the petals. Use petal tip #2.

You are never wrong with buttercups. They are real team players, low maintenance, and incredibly versatile. They look nice even when they're dry.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE KIND OF FLOWER?

My favourite flower… it's the hardest question to answer simply because this changes constantly as the seasons change. If I absolutely had to choose it would be cow parsley but I love hellebores and snowdrops in winter, blossom and clematis in spring, scented garden roses and honeysuckle in summer, and dahlias and bracken in the autumn. However, I also love ‘weeds’ – tree flowers, grasses, anything that is tall and willowy. Anything with scent and movement, creating interesting shapes, which is in season and grows locally.
