DEAR SISTERMAG READERS, Ludicrous verbal acrobatics, art nouveau sceneries in candy colours and a story inside a story inside a story – in our recent title film »GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL« from 2014, one doesn’t know where to listen or look first. As an absolute fan of pastel, the film gives me a good feeling from the beginning – and provides the sisterMAG editors many ideas for an issue that excites us to stroll through the kitschy and beautiful reception hall of the GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL . We owe the film to the director and screenwriter WES ANDERSON who carries us off into the magic world of the lobby boy and into four different times. We have a look at the life of Anderson and find out what and who inspired him to do »GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL« . Our new issue doesn’t only look sugar-sweet from the outside, it also is from the inside! Our author Elisabeth Stursberg dives into the world of the fictitious confectionary MENDL – and the food feature of OLIMPIA DAVIES makes us long for something sweet. If you like it more savoury, you surely find a new dish to try with our selected goulash recipes. For the new issue, our editor-in-chief THEA and our designer EVI went to BUDAPEST WITH a small production team to get a feeling for the city and to shoot our newest fashion

Film y r o t s Âhi 9 part
Hogging the limelight
When a film starts to get thrilling, romantic or melancholic, this used to have been musically accentuated since, at latest, the films of Alfred Hitchcock. But over time and with the emergence of genres like the dance film, music gained more and more prominence in films. Ultimately, the film soundtrack emerged and has sometimes become even more successful than the film itself. As a part of our film history, we have a look at how the soundtrack made its way into the cinema.

In the second part of our film history (from the February issue of sisterMAG ), we showed how silent film developed into sound film. Just a small reminder: The first films in history were already accompanied by musicians when they were shown in cinema. Initially, however, the melodies were improvised. The music of

respective scenes. The production that was performed for the first time in September 1908 was so elaborate and expensive that it only toured the US for three months. At least, a film was made in 1910 that used Mann’s music. Unfortunately, all copies are lost and only the script and single pictures of the scenes remain.

l a i c Finan l a i t n Pote The world’s first sound film, »THE JAZZ SINGER« , was published in October 1927 and brought a revolution for film music. Instead of holding live sessions in cinemas, the film studios were now able to record the soundtrack before the screenings. Thus, every studio built up its own music department. Until the 1950s , their focus still was on orchestral music. Especially European composers who immigrated to the US before or during World War II distinguished themselves in this

field. The most famous ones were the Oscar winners Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Max Steiner and Miklós Rózsa. Speaking of the Oscars: In the ceremony of 1935 , the awards for Best Original Score and Best Original Song were given for the very first time. Soon, the film studios saw the financial potential of soundtracks. In January 1938 , a collection of three single records with the overlong title

likely that the interested buyers needed an explanation of what’s on the records since it was the first commercially issued soundtrack in film history.

In the 1950s , creative filmmakers eventually broke with the tradition of classical orchestral music in films. Thus, other styles found their way into cinema. For the 1951 film »A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE« , Alex North composed a soundtrack that was strongly

oriented towards jazz music. From then on, there were more and more experiments with instruments as well. The screeching violins in Alfred Hitchcock’s masterpiece »PSYCHO« (1960) that played when Janet Leigh was stabbed under the shower are unforgotten. Initially, Hitchcock wanted the scene to be without any music, but was eventually convinced by his composer Bernard Herrmann to use the piece »THE MURDER« .
The overwhelming effect allegedly made Hitchcock double Hermann’s salary. In recent times, Hollywood has been shifting back to orchestral soundtracks. Especially blockbusters like the »LORD OF THE RINGS« trilogy and the »STAR WARS« films take full effect with epically produced audio tracks. The work on these soundtracks normally takes months and is closely connected to the development of the film.

The albums usually called »soundtracks« are divided into the original compositions of the musical backdrop – the socalled »score« – and songs that were chosen to be used in the film. On the intersection, there are the soundtracks of musical films and individual songs that commissioned to be written for a film. The soundtrack of »DIRTY DANCING« (1987) , for example, is a mixture of songs that already existed, like »BE MY BABY« by The Ronettes, and specifically written

titles like »HUNGRY EYES« by Eric Carmen. With more than 32 million sold copies, the »DIRTY DANCING« soundtrack is one of the best-selling albums of all time. Three other soundtracks are even higher in the ranking: those of the disco classics »SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER« (1977) with 40 million and »GREASE« (1978) with 38 million sold copies as well as the soundtrack of the 1992 film »THE BODYGUARD« . The latter was sold more than 42 million times and making it the most successful

soundtrack ever. About two million copies of the soundtrack of »PULP FICTION« (1994) were sold which is significantly high for an independent film. It also established the reputation of director Quentin Tarantino to be a friend of excellent music, which he further cemented with the song selection of his subsequent productions. Many music fans bought albums of Tarantino’s films without even having seen them. This is similar to soundtracks of films like »AMÉLIE« and »JUNO« that are almost more popular than the films themselves. Until today, some soundtracks sell exceptionally well. The album of the film »MOANA« , for example,
was on top of the US charts last year. There probably is no bigger honour for the makers of »RACKET IN THE BACKGROUND« .

WES ANDERSON’S THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL TAKES US ON A TOUR DE FORCE THROUGH ITS NARRATIVE STRANDS AND EPOCHS
A teenaged girl reads a book in the present frame narrative, in which its author remembers in 1985 , how he met the Grand Budapest Hotel’s owner Zéro Mustafa (TONY REVOLORI ) in the Sixties when he was a young man himself. Zéro had told him the phenomenal story, how he came to be the owner of the impressive building and how he worked his way up from a lobby boy under Concierge Gustave (RALPH FIENNES ) to proprietor. (TRAILER )

THE FILM IS NARRATED
WES ANDERSON tells this »story
ON FOUR DIFFERENT
in a story« in his unprecedented bizarre style. The narration is located in the fictional country »ZUBRÓWKA« , which is named after a polish Vodka brand. With his invented Carpathian world, Anderson creates a touristic ideal image of a glamourous Europe, that is redolent with pastel bakeries, old monasteries and pompous castles like NEUSCHWANSTEIN . Time and again in the focus: Postcard-like panorama shots of the scenery,
TEMPORAL LEVELS IN FIVE CHAPTERS, WHICH ENCOMPASS THE 20TH CENTURY. IN ITS CENTRE IS THE EPONYMOUS »GRAND BUDAPEST«, WHICH IS REMINISCENT OF THE LEGENDARY HOTELS IN SOUTHEAST EUROPE AT THE FIN DE SIÈCLE, THE HEYDAY OF EUROPEAN LUXURY HOTELS.

which are reminiscent of the picturesque landscape paintings by romantic artist CASPAR DAVID FRIEDRICH . The director found further inspirations for his imaginary worlds in the works of Austrian writer STEFAN ZWEIG , who wrote his novels at the beginning of the 20th century. This is also clearly marked in the film’s end credits where it says: »Inspired by the writings of Stefan Zweig«. GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL can be seen as a postmodern pastiche, that integrates past image styles,
nostalgically reconstructs filmic formats and cites works of art, literature and film. With this film, Anderson recreates the past century on screen, whereby he refers to its former media and their specificities.

WITH THIS AUTEUR FILM, HE TAKES THE AUDIENCE TO THE FAIRY-TALE LIKE WORLD OF THE FANTASTIC, WHICH RECONSTRUCTS THE PAST OF THE 20 TH CENTURY ON SCREEN THROUGH CITATIONAL IMAGERY AND INTERTEXTUAL REFERENCES.
ANDERSON uses diverse formal-
aesthetic stylistic devices, which cite and nostalgically recreate the respective time, in which the story is located. Thus, he represents each epoch with another cinema screen format. The narrative strand from 1932 is, for instance, shown in the format 4:3 ; the year 1968 is presented in Cinemascope format, 2,35:1 , and for the present as well as 1985 , Anderson chose a 16:9 format. What is special about this: Each format was actually Hollywood screen standard at the respective points of time they refer to. Thus, the 4:3 format in films like Alfred Hitchcock’s THE 39 STEPS (1935) was expression of the classical
Hollywood era during the Thirties. Cinemascope was ideal for extensive panorama shots such as in Western movies like ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST
(1968). Thus, the diverse image formats help to give t h e

audience a temporal orientation within the different narrative strands and to generate on a formal level a nostalgic reconstruction of the Hollywood aesthetic of the respective decades. This is further underlined by the special colour coding of the imagery:
COLOURS
The main narrative of the film in 1985 is clearly organised in pastel candy colours such as pink, blue and violet, while those scene in the Sixties show strong yellows, orange and red tones. 1932 is
SISTER-MAG.COM
shown in a bright, saturated look. Such a colour coding – especially of the landscape scenes – also plays with the film’s citationality: It refers to the photochrome printing method, which was highly popular at the turn of the 19 TH CENTURY and allowed to reproduce colours even before the invention of colour photography. The result were those typically pastel views.

PLACE OF THE FANTASTIC THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL
turns the hotel to a place of the fantastic, the imaginary and the magical, where not only temporal boundaries can be overcome playfully, but also a world of the Other and the bizarre is possible. During the course of the action, the fourth wall is deliberately
shattered, when actors – in a seemingly documentary style – talk to the audience directly. Already at its beginning, the author, for instance, talks into the camera to tell his audience how he got to know Zéro. With this realistic narrative technique, ANDERSON grabs his viewers

GÖRLIWOOD
It was actually in the German town of GÖRLITZ , that the main part of the film Grand Budapest Hotel was shot. The Saxon small town near the border to Poland boasts an unparalleled concentration of historical buildings. Almost completely undamaged by World War II, the town counts more than 4000 restored historical buildings spanning the epochs of Renaissance, baroque, late Gothic, Jugendstil and Wilhelminian style. With its unharmed historical facades, Görlitz was the ideal setting for the fictive southeastEuropean country. One building in particular caught Wes Anderson’s attention: The »WARENHAUS GÖRLITZ« (which opened 1913 as department store and was SISTER-MAG.COM
closed in 2009 ). Its art nouveau interiors were refurbished to house the central location of the film, the lobby of the Grand Hotel. The fictive scenery was modelled after the appearances of European Grand Hotels at the turn of the century, such as the Palace Bristol Hotel in Karlsbad.

During the last ten years, so many films were shot in the Saxon small town of GÖRLITZ – especially USAmerican movies – that its nickname »GÖRLIWOOD« pays tribute to this Hollywood boom. Görlitz had already been a film location during DEFA-times for several TV productions. But its great breakthrough came after the fall of the Berlin Wall with Hollywood-productions such as

A REAL
An interview with the real successor of master confectioner Mendl The confectionery MENDL and its speciality, the wonderfully fluffy COURTESANS au Chocolat, play an important role in the GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL . In this issue, our hunt for the real-life version of the bakery in the movie led us to VIENNA (where else?). Since 1786 , the royal confectioner DEMEL has been providing the town with sugary delicacies.
37
SISTERMAG 41 | 09 / 2018
Wes Anderson's film shows master confectioner Mendl and the young confectioner Agatha covered in flour while they patiently make mountains and mountains of Courtesans au Chocolat. The guests of the Grand Budapest Hotel and the inhabitants of the sleepy village seemingly can’t get enough of them.
SISTER-MAG.COM
But what does the day-to-day life of a confectioner really look like and what would MENDL'S day look like today? We know the usual assumptions: getting up in the middle of the night, working hard, but at least you get to try something in between… Usually, helping convicts escape prison isn’t a part of those days (you’ll know what we mean when you watch the film) – still, a confectioner’s work is always special. At DEMEL in Vienna, we found and interviewed the real successor of master confectioner Mendl: head confectioner OLIVER CSAPO . 38
GRAND
BUDAPEST
HOTEL
The question about getting up early is answered quickly when Oliver starts describing a regular day at the >office< which starts between 5.30 and 6AM . »We usually start by talking about how much needs to be made and assigning people to certain processes. We also coordinate special decoration orders with the team. We freshly produce our confectionery every day and have multiple tastings to ensure great quality.«
Oliver Csapo Confectioner »I am allowed to continue the tradition of Demel with my work and pass my knowledge on to the next generation.«
How wonderful that tastings really are a part of the job. But aren’t there days when the sugar is just too much? Oliver confirms that this can happen around Christmas time. DEMEL stands for tradition in everything, not only considering the quality. The
39
SISTERMAG 41 | 09 / 2018
selection hasn’t changed much since the days when it supplied the Viennese court. A few new products support the wellknown classics: apple and cream strudel, Annatorte, Fächertorte, Schaumrolle, Fragilité and DEMEL’S Sachertorte. (The Fragilité is Oliver‘s personal favourite! Seems like a reliable source.) The recipes have been adapted in places, the quantities of sugar have changed a little and the seasonal products are adapted for each time of the year. This is one of Oliver’s favourite tasks. Is there any task where he often forgets time? A resounding »yes«: »Whenever I think about new creations and how we could make them!« As head confectioner, it is Oliver’s responsibility to make sure that every product (strudel and tarts for the coffee house and articles for the shop) always meets the high quality standards. He knows his responsibility and sees the biggest daily challenge in
His dedication to DEMEL as a brand clearly motivates and drives him. Oliver’s answer to our last question is too beautiful not to be quoted in full length. We asked him why his work is important to him and why he chose his profession: »I am allowed to continue the tradition of Demel with my work and pass my knowledge on to the next generation. We can make customers and guests happy with our work. On wedding days, birthdays or on a regular day with a great cup of coffee and a beautiful piece of cake. I love my job, I love designing and really value working on a team. I would choose this job again any day.« What a beautiful motto for future confectioners!
»meeting the expectations of our customers while delivering on quality.« SISTER-MAG.COM

Nevertheless, this small range of special and unique films seems to be enough for everyone to recognize his work as Âťmelancholic comediesÂŤ par excellence and Anderson himself as a significant modern film author.

Since his debut »BOTTLE ROCKET« (1996) , film critics are singing their praises and big filmmaker MARTIN SCORSESE, known for his blockbusters »Goodfellas« (1990) and »Shutter Island« (2010), also enjoys Andersons exceptional works, which undoubtedly stand out in the overcrowded pool of Hollywood films.
Although his films come out irregularly, they captivate due to their ingenuity, a lot of love to detail and empathy for unusual characters. There is, for example, the very peculiar family in »THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS« (2001) , whose bizarre family constellation makes for absurd scenes and the ultimately tragic core of the story: Royal Tenenbaum, the main character of the film, leaves his family and returns years later falsely claiming to have cancer in order to reconcile with his children, who by then despise him. »I love working with actors. That's what the set really is, for me. It's my time with the actors.«
One might ask what inspires Anderson to create such mavericks as Max Fischer in »RUSHMORE« (1998) , who nobody really likes except an equally crazy industrialist with the adorable name Herman Blume, who supports Max and stands by him. What's his angle when he shoots a children's film for adults in the case of »MOONRISE KINGDOM« (2012) , which, through the two adolescents Sam and Suzy, delivers a fable on the topic of an epic love full of devotion and determination? It is about the film’s artistic power to bring about SISTER-MAG.COM
and inspire changes in existing ways of thinking. And everything is marvellous! Time and again Anderson succeeds in creating brilliant parallel worlds and transporting the audience to modern fairy tales. Finally, with »THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL« – and here critics quite agree –, Anderson has created a cinematic masterpiece. In another tragicomedy, the once glorious Grand Hotel appears as a candy-coloured doll house surrounded by a beautiful, endless sunset and a sky from

which snowflakes fall wistfully from time to time. The plot is set in a faraway place of which the likes have never been seen before, Âťon the Eastern border of the European continentÂŤ, as the narrator describes. There is a murder, a thief appears and somewhere a painting goes missing. But who is the culprit in this colourful play of intrigue and malicious accidents? Andersons story conjures up a long forgotten past and shows a visual and surreal piece of art, whose brilliant colour compositions
captivate. As in all of his films, this one also shows Andersons unbelievable imagination that knows no boundaries. By creating cinematic universes with fantastic, unreal pictures and even more beautiful characters, everything seeming to come from a faraway world, Anderson transports the audience on a journey that will change their perspective and lets them experience something magical, neither more nor less.

I am a huge fan of MARILYN MONROE . I not only have one of her quotes inked, but also her autograph. I have always been fascinated by her appearance. She might have lived in the 50s and 60s but the fact that her look is still being copied today shows how timeless this woman and her style are. I have always read a lot about her, and it seems like she was an incredibly misunderstood person with whom I could always identify. Many of her quotes could have been my own; her quest for fame on one hand and that incredible vulnerability on the other have always drawn me in. There is a special quote from her: »STARS, ALL WE ASK FOR IS OUR RIGHT TO TWINKLE« . That describes me perfectly. All I have ever wanted was my right to shine – that’s why I named my first book after it, too.

What makes a perfect movie night?
What’s your dream role? I would love to play a character that shows people that I can act because I’ve spent half my life on stage. Many people don’t know that I have always wanted to act and first stood on a stage at four years old. I would like to play a difficult role like a drug addict – something that challenges me and takes me far away from my own life. That would be cool.
I wear show outfits a lot in real life so I’m always thankful to change into something more comfortable when I’m at home. That doesn’t rule out sequins though – I have a lot of sequinned tracksuits. But something really comfortable gets me in the mood for a movie! And it has to be dark! That really helps me to fully enter the world of the movie. Sometimes I also dress to match the occasion. In that case, comfort isn’t the key. Sometimes I put on tails to watch an old Hollywood film.
What is special about recording voice-overs? You can’t use your body while recording. That’s the difference to acting. If you’re acting and someone pushes you, your voice will always make the fitting sound. During recording, your body is completely still and the sound has to come from within you. That is much more difficult than you’d think but it’s also a lot of fun. If you had to sum up the message of »The Incredibles 2« in one sentence, what would it be? Believe in yourself, don’t let yourself be judged by others, and look for the people that only want the best for you.
HOTEL
Who should you go watch the new »The Incredibles« with? That really doesn’t matter – the movie is made for everyone. Maybe you should even take someone who doesn’t like animated movies and thinks they’re for children. They’ll be surprised how quickly you forget that the movie is animated when you’re drawn into its world. You really feel like you’re in a blockbuster!

What is special about recording voice-overs?
My favourite movie is »GOOD WILL HUNTING« .
Old classics or modern flicks? If I have to decide: modern flicks. »SILVER LININGS« is one of my current favourites.
You can really make a character come alive while recording. You can experiment and have fun as an actor – in the studio, I do things that I wouldn’t be brave enough to do on set.

The market itself is a beautiful building and worth a short visit!

Budapest is full of wonderful sculptures that invite you to linger around, read about the famous depicted people or photograph. One of our favourite examples: composer Emmerich Kálmán, known for his lively operettas like »Die Csárdásfürstin« (The Csárdás Princess), who waits patiently in Nagymezo utca. Another beautiful spot: The Franz Liszt Academy of Music. You can at least take peak into the foyer, where you'll get a glance at the pageantry expected in the interior.

Stefan Zweig's literary influence on Wes Anderson It is rather complex to fully make the artistic connection between the contemporary US-American director WES ANDERSON and the Austrian author STEFAN ZWEIG from the 1920S . The core of this relationship is rooted in a mutual admiration of golden 19TH CENTURY culture in Vienna. They are both drawn to emulating this particular, lively, exhilarating scene that was an
inspiration to so many creatives (among them GUSTAV KLIMT and ARTHUR SCHNITZLER ). It was the time of the so-called »COFFEE HOUSE LITERATURE«
during which STEFAN ZWEIG lived. A time that he nostalgically dreams of and writes about in his work – and a time that Anderson is now, decades later, reviving in his masterpiece »THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL« (2014).

My today and each of my yesterdays, my rises and falls, are so diverse that I sometimes feel as if I had lived not one, but several existences, each one different from the others.
In 1934 , as the influence of the National Socialists was growing in Austria, Jewish author STEFAN ZWEIG fled into exile. First to London, then in 1940 via New York to Brazil – an exotic place that was contrary to European culture at that time. While his books were put on the list of forbidden writers, Stefan Zweig’s work was celebrated and loved in Brazil. Still only 2 years later, he saw no other way out than suicide to escape the downfall of his intellectual home of Europe, as he wrote in his SISTER-MAG.COM
farewell letter. To the talented writer and curious intellectual STEFAN ZWEIG , his escape into exile signified a cutting break. He was used to the exchange with other great artists and thinkers and the totalitarian politics of the time symbolised the total destruction of freedom – particularly in the artistic and intellectual sense. STEFAN ZWEIG was in the process of creating work that was deeply steeped in the ideas and morals of the VIENNA MODERNISM (around 1890-1910), where

there was space for lively public discussions about the arts, culture and politics. These were essential to the identities of many creatives and symbolised a time to Zweig that ended with WORLD WAR I and finally died with the establishment of National Socialism.

The era was closely tied to the ideas of the »FIN DE SIÈCLE« and strictly denied any forms of conservative art. Zweig’s work is based around the downfall of this great Viennese time that was so focused on independence. His
Zweig’s consistent devotion to art and its constructiveness definitely inspired Wes Anderson‘s masterpiece »THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL« . The director was deeply moved by Stefan Zweig’s life and his

literary examination of the past – the movie is a manifestation of the »ZWEIG-ESQUE« . »THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL« is not based on a specific novel, but rather tries to embody and re-interpret the stylistic details and themes of Zweig’s writing. It is not surprising then that the crumbling main character, the hotel itself, reminds us of the majestic times of the HABSBURG MONARCHY . Set in a faraway land that apparently never existed, the REPUBLIC OF ZUBROWKA , it is reminiscent of past times. The story of the SISTER-MAG.COM
hotel starts in the present and jumps into the past by means of memories from different points in time that all tell a story about lies, deception and murder. Brilliant! In the midst of this illusory game, it is only natural that the accused victim is the only loyal inhabitant of the old hotel. The aging concierge, MONSIEUR GUSTAVE H., embodies the melancholy of a past world of glitz and glamour with every mournful breath he draws. The search for the culprit turns out to be in the interest of several

THE OTTMANN MANOR IN MERAN
The beautiful Ottman Manor in the heart of the picturesque town of Meran hides a fascinating history behind its unique architecture. The town villa was built 800 years ago and is an oasis of calm in the style of the early 1900s. The Kirchlechner’s have created a real gem by combining their aesthetic intuition with a love for hosting that makes the hotel feel like home.

BRANCHE BEAUTY & SKINCARE HEADQUARTER BERLIN FOUNDER MONIQUE HOELL
If you’re a lover of cosmetics and have an Instagram account, chances are that you already know HelloBody . Countless influencers regularly preach the benefits of this German start-up and help the organic brand grow. But who is behind the brand and what makes it special? We met founder and CEO Monique for a chat . HE Y MONIQUE! LET’S START OFF BY INTRODUCING YOU PROPERLY! W HO A RE YOU AND WHAT DO YOU DO?
My name is Monique Hoell and I am the founder and CEO of HelloBody. I studied economics with a focus on communications and marketing. I founded my first company 7 years ago and even appeared on the TV show »Die Höhle der Löwen« (similar to »The Apprentice«). I presented the app »SixtyOne Minutes«, which was a concierge service directly connected to the app. I fought for 2 years before I had to give up on the project.
@ hellobody h e llo b o d y DE
It was very hard but it really shaped me and it was an important step in my personal development. My second try ventured into the area of beauty and cosmetics: HelloBody. Today, we have around 100 employees and love to mix up the business of cosmetics with natural ingredients. WHAT IS HELLOBODY?
HelloBody means premium natural skincare for young women. The company was founded around 3 years ago. I love the idea behind skincare and HelloBody: to take care of yourself and indulge a little. When HelloBody started 3 years ago, natural cosmetics were often made for women above 30,

believed in me and my ideas. Especially when you’re a start-up, the people at Angel Investments don’t necessarily believe in the idea but more in the person behind it. I was able to use that and convince my first investors of me as a person. This gave me enough financial security to contact a laboratory and start developing the first product. That’s how we got started. HOW DID YOU DECIDE TO TURN HELLOBODY INTO A DIGITAL PL AYER?
even though younger girls are increasingly interested in high-quality, natural skincare. Today, young women care about what they buy and consume and which products they surround themselves with. That’s exactly where HelloBody steps in. We offer them quality and a trusting relationship. HOW DID YOU FINANCE THE BRAND?
I was lucky enough to find a structure that
SISTER-MAG.COM
When I had to make the decision how to market and distribute my products, it really helped to keep the target group in mind: girls between 18 and 25 that are interested in beauty products. Where do I find those girls? On social media. That’s also how I got the idea to ask influencers and ambassadors on Instagram to try out our products and chat about them to their online followers. The focus on social media made us pioneers in that area. That

probably never would’ve happened if we had focused on several means of distributing our products. Today, we’re a start-up focused on influencer marketing with over 650.000 followers throughout Europe. DO YOU COME FROM A FA MILY OF ENTREPRENEURS?
Not at all – the opposite actually. I made all those experiences by myself and that was really important. I S GERM A N Y THE ONLY MARKET RELEVANT TO HELLOBODY?
No, we’re gradually trying to expand into other countries. At the moment, we’re present in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Great Britain, France, Belgium, Italy and Poland. We also just opened a small office in Los Angeles. WHAT MAKES YOUR PRODUCTS UNIQUE?
Our products are all natural; ingredients are all we care about. We only use the best and purest components. We are meticulous about this – to the point that we can’t really use any of the current certificates that exist for natural products. Several of them allow alcohol for conservation and sulphates. Those are two ingredients you will never find in a HelloBody product. DO YOU HAVE A HERO PRODUCT?
Not really. The most popular product that has also sort of come to represent HelloBody

is our Coco Clear Detox mask. This black mud mask is extremely nourishing and very recognisable on Instagram. We mainly make products for body and face, but are also looking to expand into hair. Our focus is on skincare. Some of our products are made for daily use while others should be used around 1 -2 times a week. Those have a special wellness element to them. WHY DO SO MANY INFLUENCERS SUPPORT YOUR PRODUCTS?
Not to pat ourselves on the back too much, but that surely is rooted in the fact that our products deliver. When we talk to influencers, they never get told what to say. We send them background information about the products but how they present them to their followers is out of our hands. We’re not here to create a 24/7 advertising channel; authenticity is important to us. WHICH THREE ELEMENTS ARE MOST IMPORTANT TO FOUNDING A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS?
one idea instead of trying to do everything at once. Secondly: trial and error. No matter what goes wrong, turn it into a positive and learn from your mistakes. Thirdly: resilience. You really need a ton of stamina to establish your idea and yourself in a field of entrepreneurs. There will always be people who don’t believe in you. HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU SPEND IN MEETINGS?
Firstly: focus. Very important and not mentioned enough. You have to focus on
Way too much. I’d say at least 80% of my day! It’s just a part of it all.

WHAT IS IMPORTANT TO YOU WHEN HIRING AN EMPLOYEE?
HOW MANY HOURS DO YOU WORK IN A WEEK?
I usually come in around 8am and never leave before 8pm. I rarely take a whole weekend off – sometimes I even enjoy working on Sunday afternoon because that’s the only time I can focus on something without being distracted by others or meetings. SISTER-MAG.COM
I am driven by values. I want my employees to know the HelloBody values from the first day on: authenticity, honesty and fairness. It’s important to me that colleagues can communicate openly with each other. It’s the only way that such a rapidly growing startup can survive. It makes me happy when all of us come together to fight for causes that are important to me and HelloBody: female empowerment and body positivity. The whole team is focused on making the world a better place and doing so sustainably.

WHAT DID YOU ACHIE VE SO FAR IN THAT PROSPECT?
We regularly support charitable projects and collect donations within our fantastic community. At the moment, we support #Bikeygees e.V., a charitable club in Berlin that teaches girls and women (some of them are refugees, some aren’t) how to ride bikes. This doesn’t only help the planet; it also makes the women and girls more independent. The team just spent an afternoon upcycling 20 bikes for the club with a HelloBody makeover and our community raised a whopping 5.000€ in donations.
WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST WISH FOR THE FUTURE?
I hope that the HelloBody products find their way into the daily skincare routines of many young women. And I would like for HelloBody as a brand to be perceived as a socially conscious company that does good and supports women all over the world.

Éclat d'Arpège Eau de Parfum
The perfume »Eclat d'Arpège« is like a
Lanvin
characterized by the tender serenity and
joyous melody by Lanvin. The top note is spiciness of green lilac and Sicilian lemon leaves. At the heart, we find wisteria, green tea leaves and the ripe abundance of beach blossoms, peony and osmanthus. A transparent box presents the elegant bottle, which holds this opulence and abundance.

But not only does the classic from Cologne inspire and delight people from all over the world for 225 years, but the brand has reinvented itself many times with inspiring scents, tours of their flagship store or small everyday helpers such as these refreshment towels. Completely modern and yet somehow fitting in this ensemble: the pfoducts by fashion and beauty vlogger Zoe Elizabeth Snugg from the UK, whose entire beauty line is based on sugary sweet creations.

BRANCHE
WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT DO YOU DO?
We are Sonja and Iris, sisters and founders of TidyUps. Our TidyUps are make-up organisers made of high-quality acrylic. They can be put together individually thanks to a highly evolved interlocking system to make up a well-arranged cosmetics storage. We sell our organisers in our own online shop . THE IDEA
Iris has been a hair & make-up artist for over 10 years and used to have an online shop for make-up and cosmetics. That’s how we got into the business. Sonja joined this online shop in 2016 after giving up her old job as project manager for an agency. We had the idea for acrylic organisers because we needed them ourselves. We had been looking for the perfect organiser for our cosmetics and wanted to add that product to our online shop. Since we

couldn’t find a great product that suited our expectations, we decided to design our own. By selling them in our old online shop, we were able to test the product. The positive feedback and quick sales encouraged us to re-think our business and focus completely on selling organisers. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE ACRYLIC A S A MATERIAL FOR TIDYUPS? WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES?
The material is a little more expensive than regular plastic but has amazing quality that convinced us. We want our customers to enjoy the product as long as possible. • Acrylic is very durable and sturdy

too supports longevity and a beautiful appearance. WHICH FURNITURE IS SUITED FOR THE SIZE OF THE TIDYUPS?
We adapted our sizes to the drawers of the IKEA ALEX cupboard and the MALM vanity. These pieces are perfect for storing cosmetics and have been chosen by thousands of women across the globe. Of course, you can use our organisers in any drawers but they’re perfectly suited for the two models mentioned above. WHAT ARE T YPICAL PRODUCTS THAT CAN BE ORGA NI SED NICELY? W HICH ONES ARE YOUR FAVOURITE PRODUCTS AND BRANDS?
compared to real glass. • Acrylic is visually pleasing, lets light through and is UV-resistant. These are excellent features for drawers and vanities. • Acrylic is resistant to both extreme heat and cold and doesn’t get brittle. This SISTER-MAG.COM
Our organisers are made for every product. The drawers of the organisers can be changed through an interlocking system so everything fits in there: brushes, powders (e.g. bronzer, highlighter, countouring

powder, blusher), eyeshadows, palettes, lipsticks, lipglosses, pots, tubes, liners, mascaras, concealer, foundations and so on. Our favourite products? We both love lipsticks in popping colours. Sonja never leaves the house without concealer (which is understandable when you have two children), Iris loves bronzer and highlighter. WHO ARE YOUR CUSTOMERS, WHERE DO THEY COME FROM AND HOW DO THEY FIND YOU?
Our customers are from all over the world. We mainly sell our TidyUps in Europe but we have customers in the US and UAE, too. Of course, most of them are women between 16 and 40 years of age. They like to put on (expensive) make-up and to have wellarranged and beautifully displayed products. Some of them are beauty bloggers or women who love watching YouTube tutorials and have built up a significant collection of

make-up. It can be hard to keep an overview and even just remember all of the things you own. A well-organised collection is very important. Some girls even have an entire room dedicated to make-up or cosmetics Most of our customers find us through our social media accounts on Instagram and Facebook. We also collaborate with chosen YouTubers who talk about our products. And the old-school way: Google. WE KNOW WHAT IT’S LIKE TO BE FOUNDERS AND SISTERS AT THE SAME TIME. HAVE YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO WORK TOGETHER?
We never thought that we’d end up

working together because we worked in different fields so we didn’t really have common ground for founding a business. In hindsight, we have realised that we are a perfect team with Sonja’s experience as a project manager with marketing experience and Iris‘ experience as a former graphic designer and make-up artist. As sisters, we trust each other blindly and know that we’re always after the same goal and that’s wonderful. Our connection is probably stronger than the one of people who are ‘just’ friends and business partners. We really complement each other – not just in a professional sense. Each of us has their own area of expertise. As sisters, we trust each other 100% and know that we can rely on each other. That makes working together extremely easy and nice! HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE ON YOUR TEAM?
It’s just the two of us. We are a two-women show at the moment SISTER-MAG.COM
HOW DOES A TYPICAL DAY AT WORK LOOK LIKE FOR YOU? DO YOU HAVE A SPECIAL TEAM RITUAL OR ANYTHING SIMILAR?
The most important thing for starting a working day right is coffee! Then we take care of our orders because we know that our customers want to receive their organisers as quickly as possible to be able to get rid of their chaos. After that, every day is different: Sometimes we have great collaborations with bloggers, sometimes a shoot with new boxes in our own showroom and in between, we always feed our social media accounts. Because we’re only two

people, we do everything ourselves. It’s really fun but also very demanding. WHAT ARE YOUR GOAL S FOR THE NEXT FIVE YEARS?
Of course, we want to grow the popularity of our products, convince more customers, expand internationally and sell more TidyUps as well as have many more amazing collaborations. We are super passionate and back our products 100%, so growing is always a goal. It would be great if we could have a few employees, have a bigger storage and send many packages with TidyUps into the world every day. 191
