GIRL WITH THE PEARL EARRING
D e a r R e a d e r s o f s i sterM AG May has begun and the beautiful painting »Girl with the Pearl Earring« serves as our insiration for the new sisterMAG issue. No matter whether you know the history of Vermeer's painting or not, the girl's vulnerable gaze has been copied a thousand times and reproduced in countless collages, products as well as being used in film and literature.
painting is shown. Maybe the museum's Vermeer exhibition of 1995/96 is partly responsible for the painting's posthumous world fame. Our new fashion collection takes Vermeer's time as inspiration to provide modern DIY sewn pieces for your wardrobe. Next up the section »Pearl Earring«. It has been much discussed in the art world and science, whether the jewel in the painting really can be a pearl – too big, too expensive or the wrong reflections in the painting were only a few arguments being used. We don't care! We like the pearl as fashion accessory for this summer and first explore its origin and production. With our partner Thomas Sabo, we finally immerse ourselves deep into the world of jewellery and show the most beautiful pieces for all sorts of occasions! A real spring awakening!
It is for this reason that this issue of sisterMAG proposed a challenge for our team: We wanted to create an inspiring and exciting issue that does not play upon what has been seen a thousand times. We want to discuss new aspects of this painting and not allow ourselves to get carried away by the kitschy-grotesque reproductions of this painting. We hope that we succeeded! As usually you'll find this issue to be divided in three sections. In the first one we talk about the painting itself and interview the curator of Den Haag's Mauritshuis Museum, where the

yellow tones. The turban is indeed a fascinating subject. For centuries it has captivated artists and fashioninterested people. First interest in oriental fashion throughout Europe arose during Vermeer's times because of the Turkish wars. In her article »Bathers and Odalisques in the Works of Ingres«, Julia Laukert explains how turbans and wrapped headdresses were used as exotic stylistic devices in art until the 19th century. And it continues on today! Even if we use it more as an exotic fashion statement (see hairstyle tutorials starting on page 122). The last section focuses on the Netherlands. The home country of the baroque Dutch painter Jan Vermeer should not be ignored,

of course. Robert Eberhardt explains in his treatise how a whole decade went crazy about art during the so-called »Golden Age«. Then Eliane Roest takes us to The Hague in her Digital Ladies Travel Feature. Whether it is a cute coffeeshop, concept store, or Instagrammable

she has all the important tips for a daytrip to this trendy city by the sea. The colours, the shapes, the way the oil paint is breaking due to its texture – all these aspects have inspired us to produce sisterMAG issue 48. The year 1665
What was happening during the years in which our main artwork for this issue, Vermeer’s »Girl with a Pearl Earring« was created? What was in the news, what was occupying people’s minds, and which developments determined daily life, or not? In our series »The Year X« we want to take a closer look at certain years and fill the numbers with life. All the different areas of life play a role here: Politics and history, arts, meteorology, the public sphere. We reconstruct the historical context of the artwork to paint the bigger picture. In this issue: The year 1665.

Sixth February 1665: At St James’s Palace in London, Anne Stuart is born. In that moment, she was not even among the principal heirs to the throne. However, after her father converted to Catholicism and was dethroned as a consequence, and after both her sister and her brother-in-law passed away, it was her turn. In 1702, Anne was crowned Queen of Ireland and England and the unification of the two kingdoms Scotland and England five years later would make her the first Queen of Great Britain. While this was the beginning of a new era, another era was about to end. Since none of Anne’s children could succeed her, she was also the last Queen from the House of Stuart. 15

HISTORY & POLITICS
Clearly Denmark-Norway is not the only European state in which remnants of the past feudal order were still present. Through several reforms, however, the Kingdom became a political pioneer. For the first time, absolutism was officially enshrined in the constitution, which implied a loss of power of the estates, and the elective monarchy was turned into a hereditary one. What may surprise from today’s point of view is that at the same time, female succession was introduced. Yet, the Kongelov (»King’s Law«) only applied until 1849 and would have been replaced by the time Queen Margrethe II ascended the throne in 1972.
SCIENCE I
Back to London, where the first scientific journal was published on the 6th of March, edited by the secretary of the Royal Society, the Bremen-born Heinrich »Henry« Oldenburg. The title: »Philosophical Transactions« (this was the time when »philosophical« still referred mainly to the natural sciences). The idea behind the journal was to make the results and findings of various researchers accessible to a wider audience, and to promote scientific exchange. It should be mentioned here that at the time, scientific standards and

methods were still quite divergent. While at one end of the spectrum alchemists were concerned with the question of how to produce gold, at the other end the Royal Society was promoting a strict credo: Valid is only what can be proven in scientific experiments.
HEALTH Still in London, where a medical catastrophe overshadows everything else: The Great Plague. The first associated death was registered in April and from here, the epidemic would be raging for over a year, costing up to 100,000 lives. The total number of London’s inhabitants, according to early and not yet entirely reliable estimates, was somewhere between 460,000 and 600,000.
THE NEW WORLD In North America, England had just won back control over New York from the Netherlands. On the 22nd of June, Thomas Willett was appointed first mayor of the city. He spoke both languages and maintained good connections with representatives of both sides which made him an important asset when he had repeatedly acted as

a mediator between the colonial powers. His job now was to ensure a smooth transition from Dutch to British rule for the already cosmopolitan, vibrant city.

SOCIETY & PUBLIC SPHERE If you want to spread news, how do you go about it in 1665, were there newspapers? The first weekly newspaper-like medium, Relation, had indeed been published for 60 years in Strasbourg. And it would not be long until the first daily newspaper appeared: 1650 in Leipzig. Despite these forerunners and even though single sheets with news delivered to subscribers by so-called ÂťnovellantsÂŤ had been common practice for some time, the industry of newspaper publishing and distribution was on the verge of a historical upswing.

SCIENCE II The British researcher Robert Hooke focussed on how plants work and how they were built – and finally, finally he had a breakthrough when he discovered the plant cell. His discovery was all the more exciting because his principal working device, the microscope, had itself just been invented.
PERFORMING ARTS In France, the Sun King was reigning with pomp and grandeur. He had acquired a liking for the ballet and in September, he attended the premiere of a new play. »L’Amour médecin« was a cooperation of the composer

ARCHITECTURE & POLITICS
Richelieu
On the square behind the palace in Berlin, construction works for the Old Marstall began. The Electoral Palace was not yet the official royal residence, but the original medieval structure had since been turned into an impressive Renaissance building with surrounding colonnades and decorated gables. It had, however, suffered from the Thirty-Year War which was why the Elector Friedrich Wilhelm decided to have the palace restored. It would also not be long before the famous architect Andreas SchlĂźter would do his magic, updating the building to the tastes and needs of Baroque high society.

For our May 2019 issue, we set out to achieve a very special goal. For this we ventured to the RuĂ&#x;wurm manor (RuĂ&#x;wurmsches Herrenhaus), in the Breitungen municipality of Thuringia, where many centuries have inscribed themselves in the washed-out sandstones, weathered half-timbered beams, worn steps, and soot from the Thirty Years' War. In this historical setting, we staged clothes made of chambray and nettle, reminiscent of pieces from Vermeer's paintings. What might surprise you is that each creation is suitable as an IT piece in your modern DIY wardrobe!

ARCHITECTURE
The two-storey building was built with massive sandstone walls and a half-timbered construction from high-quality oak beams. Around 1542/43, an extensive new dwelling was constructed around a medieval core, which was extended again in 1606 and at the end of the 17th century. The half-timbered house at the small gable has thrifty ornamental forms, while the main gable is tilted. Above the pointed arch gate there is a sandstone relief plate with the double coat of arms of the von RuĂ&#x;wurm family (a kneeling monk with a book and prayer chain) and the von Urff family (two eagle necks).
The spacious hall on the ground floor boasts a beamed ceiling, a mighty carved pillar of saddle wood from 1606, and a fireplace from the time of construction. SISTER-MAG.COM

HISTORY
Breitungen was first mentioned in 933 as »Bretinga«. On the left side of the Werra (Frauenbreitungen) there was a royal court dating back to the time of the Frankish occupation. The history of our location began in 1138, when a Henneberg castle estate in Frauenbreitungen, at that time still Königsbreitungen, was mentioned in the possession of the lords of Breitungen. In 1370 a »von Rußwurm« is named as the owner for the first time. Since 2013 the association has organized an annual programme of events including readings, concerts, talks, cafés, guided tours, etc. Guests have included the writers and intellectuals Nora Bossong, Daniela Danz, Martin Mosebach, Hellmut Seemann, Simon Strauß, Erika Tophoven, and Matthias Weichelt, as well as politicians such as Minister President Bernhard Vogel and Member of the Bundestag Gerald Ullrich.

SISTERMAG 48 | 05 / 2019
First, a general question: Who was Jan Vermeer and what characterises his style of painting? JOHANNES (or Jan) VERMEER
(1632-1675) ) spent his whole life in his native Delft, a thriving city which was an important centre of trade and industry. His father worked as a silk weaver, inn keeper and art dealer. In 1653 Vermeer married CATHARINA BOLNES - the couple eventually had 15 children, four of whom died young. Vermeer was active as an artist, but like his father he was also an inn keeper and art dealer. He died at the age of 43, leaving his wife and underage children in financial difficulties. A rather sad end to the life of an artist who is now considered, along with REMBRANDT and FRANS HALS , one of the most important painters of the Dutch 17th century. Compared with the output of painters such as Rembrandt and Hals, Vermeer's surviving oeuvre is exceptionally small: only 36 paintings by his hand have been preserved. He must have made more but works of art do not always survive the ravages of SISTER-MAG.COM
time. Vermeer probably worked long and hard on each painting, especially as his technique became increasingly refined over time. He started his career with large paintings depicting biblical and mythological scenes (like »DIANA AND HER NYMPHS« at the Mauritshuis), but soon he began to concentrate on what we call 'genre scenes' - scenes from everyday life - on much smaller formats. He also painted a few cityscapes, the most wellknown being his famous »VIEW OF DELFT« in the collection of the Mauritshuis. An important characteristic of Vermeer's style of painting is the use of small dots of paint to create an illusion of light playing on the surface of an object. After 1660 Vermeer began to use these light effects more sparingly and painted contours in a softer, more diffuse way. It

was at this point in his career, around 1665, that Vermeer painted »GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING« .
Who shows the famous painting »The Girl with the Pearl Earring« (1665) and what is its context of creation? No one knows the true identity of the »GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING« and this will probably always remain a mystery. The model could have been someone from Vermeer's family or inner circle, but this certainly does not need to be the case. The reason her name remains unknown mostly has to 45

do with the fact the painting is not a formal portrait. It is a type of painting that the Dutch in the 17th century called a »TRONIE« , which means »FACE« . These were highly popular study-like paintings that depict heads or faces of certain characters or types rather than recognizable persons. Sometimes these were 'exotic types', which is also the case with the »GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING« . She is wearing a turban-style headscarf - Dutch girls in the 17th century typically did not wear turbans. Vermeer used
SISTER-MAG.COM
this accessory to turn his model into an exotic, Eastern figure. Also, the eye-catching, oversized pearl earring adds to the EXOTIC air of the painting. The girls' idealized, beautiful face and her unusual attire lend the picture a timeless, even mysterious character.
How can the work be located in art history: what shaped the period in which Vermeer was an artist? Vermeer’s choice of subject pose and costume for the »GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING« seems to
46
GIRL WITH THE PEARL EARRING
have been inspired by the work of a contemporary artist from the Southern-Netherlands, MICHAEL SWEERTS . We think Vermeer knew some of his paintings. Sweerts painted quite a few bust-length figures with brightly lit faces against dark backgrounds, quite similar to the »GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING« . These character studies by Sweerts were also »TRONIES« , instead of traditional portraits. However, the artist who really popularized »TRONIES« in Dutch painting was REMBRANDT , who was
already specializing in these types of paintings in the 1630s. He also used anonymous models for his virtuoso studies, which stand out because of their strong play of LIGHT and SHADOW , as well as the eccentric clothing and accessories of the figures.

Since when is the painting in the possession of the Mauritshuis? Is it exhibited permanently? The painting entered the collection by a 'secret bequest' from the Dutch art lover and collector Arnoldus des Tombe in 1903. He had bought the painting at an auction in THE HAGUE in 1881, where he, together with a befriended art historian, recognized the painting as a work by VERMEER . Nobody else did, as Vermeer was not as famous at that time as he

is nowadays, so DES TOMBE managed to buy the painting for a mere two guilders and thirty cents, an unbelievable bargain! The painting was already displayed in the MAURITSHUIS in 1881 but has been (almost) permanently on view in the museum since it was gifted to the museum in 1903. The painting was part of the oncein-a-lifetime monographic exhibition of Vermeer's oeuvre in 1995-1996, which was organized by the Mauritshuis and the NATIONAL GALLERY OF ART in Washington D.C. »GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING« has also been part of a travelling exhibition of highlights from the Mauritshuis collection in 2012-2014, when the museum was temporarily closed for a huge renovation and expansion project. But these were very special occasions when you visit the Mauritshuis in The Hague you can be sure to find »GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING« at her permanent spot in the museum!
Finally, what other works of art do visitors expect besides Vermeer’s masterpiece in the Mauritshuis in The Hague? The Mauritshuis boasts one of the greatest collections of Dutch 17th century art in the world, housed in a building from the same period. Visitors will find three paintings by Vermeer but also a strong collection of works by REMBRANDT . Other renowned paintings are the »LAUGHING BOY« by Frans Hals, the iconic »GOLDFINCH« by Carel Fabritius and the impressive »BULL« by Paulus Potter. In the intimate museum rooms, you will also find masterpieces by Rubens, Holbein, Jan Steen, Jacob van Ruisdael, Hendrick Avercamp and many, many others. Certainly, also noteworthy are the splendid works by masters that are less well-known, like the female still-life painter Clara Peeters, or a unique flowerpiece by DIRCK DE BRAY.

Text: Barbara Eichhammer
At the time of its creation, »The Girl with the Pearl Earring« was, curiously enough, not famous at all; nowadays, however, it is so widely known that the painting has even made it to Hollywood. We would like to show you how the 17thcentury painting is adapted in contemporary popular culture. Painting as a topos in novels and films introduces questions of intermediality and addresses the prehistory of cinematography. Especially extraordinary: the significance of the eponymous girl, which enables us to renegotiate questions of female muses, gender specific myths of artistic genius and socioeconomic contexts.

JAN VERMEER, CA. 1665
»The Girl with the Pearl Earring« (approximately 1665) is the most famous painting by Jan Vermeer (1632 – 1675). Nowadays, the Dutch artist ranks among the most significant painters of the 17th century in the Netherlands, the so-called »Dutch Golden Age«. His portraits of women and girls feature depictions of the private, domestic and every day. Vermeer showed his models during quiet activities such as letter reading, sleeping or painting. The »Mona Lisa of the North«, as the painting is also called, presents a girl with a blue turban, exotic dress and shimmering large earring in front of a dark background. The painting seems quite modern, because the girl appears to be interacting with the spectator: She is directly

gazing at the viewer, while her mouth is slightly open. Ve r m e e r has become renowned for the use of natural light in his paintings: He could create contours with light and shadows alone. Whether it is the luminousness of the girls’ lips or the shimmer of the pearl, Vermeer could animate inanimate objects with his techniques of natural light. The turban and pearl were read by art historians as signs of Orientalism. They reflect the Dutch interest of Oriental culture after the Ottoman Wars. Turbans were popular fashion accessories in Baroque times. Unknown about the painting is, who the eponymous girl was. She could have been

a paid model, a commissioned work or Vermeer’s employee. Art experts assume that the image is rather a »tronie« (Dutch for »head« or »facial expression«). In Dutch Golden Age painting, tronies were a form of genre painting: It was a portrait-like character study, with which the artist wanted to depict allegories or types rather than concrete humans. Today, the painting can be visited in Mauritshuis in The Hague. It gained worldwide fame due to the modern reception during the 20th and 21st century.

The Novel TRACY CH EVALI ER, 1999
Delft, Holland, 17th century: In her historical novel »The Girl with the Pearl Earring« (1999), American author Tracy Chevalier sketches the fictional story about the mystery, who the girl in Jan Vermeer’s iconic artwork was.

GIRL WITH THE PEARL EARRING
The biographical novel invents a truly romantic history of origins: While working in Vermeer’s household, 16-year old servant Griet turns out to be the model posing as his pearl earring girl. Thereby, she also discovers her artistic talent: Griet becomes Vermeer’s assistant, mixing his paints and arranging objects into artistic works. There are, in fact, just a few proven facts about Ve r m e e r ’s life. Tracy Chevalier tries to fill these biographical gaps by creating a version of events from Griet’s female perspective. And, thus,
accomplishes a feminist rewriting of art history: The novel renegotiates the well-known myth of the male artist and his female muse. Social circumstances led to a gender-specific dichotomy of the art world: the male artistic genius versus his female muse, the autonomous subject of the artist and his painted object. The first-person narrative, however, lends his female muse an authentic voice and perspective, which was oftentimes silenced, repressed or excluded from art history. Griet is no longer just a male object of the artist’s gaze, which a painter tries to fix on canvas, but a narrating subject. The novel depicts her subjective point of view as model, as artistic talent and muse. A prominent example for wrongly forgotten muses would be sculptress Camille Claudel (1864 – 1943). Though being inspiration for the famous artist Rodin, her talent had always been silenced.

Because of its worldwide success, Tracy Chevalier’s »The Girl with the Pearl Earring« was turned into an international movie, starring Scarlett Johansson and Colin Firth. In contrast to the novel, the biopic raises interesting questions of (inter-)mediality due to its own media nature as motion picture. With its artful composition, Peter Webber’s film is not only an adaptation of the literary source material, but also a visual reconstruction of Vermeer’s imagery. Everyday events in Vermeer’s household are shown in the film with the help of
scenes that seem to reanimate his paintings. Cameraman Eduardo Serra creates temporary tableaux vivants: He composes elaborately illuminated film images, which themselves appear like Baroque paintings. He barely moves the camera, imitating the motionless aesthetics of paintings. The film cites the most well-known paintings of Vermeer with the help of colours, lighting, interiors, figures and inventory: Objects like the lute, the harpsichord or his studio are iconic references to Jan Vermeer’s paintings. The painting »The Woman with a

Pearl Necklace« becomes part of the narrative story, »The Milkmaid« serves as visual template for female film figures. The artist’s biography does not only address the genesis of the artwork, but also the history of origins of its own medium. During the first minutes of the film, Vermeer’s nearly

photographic painting is put in line with photographic media and filmic light techniques. In fact, no other artist has been used as often as an inspiration by cinematographers as Jan Vermeer. Cinema tells its own visual prehistory in a selfreflexive way: from painted picture to moving film image. It is not by coincidence that
58

the film stages the figure of Jan Vermeer already at its beginning with a camera obscura and turns the artists into a pioneer of film lighting. With its period detail, the film inscribes itself into the tradition of costume drama or heritage film, of which »The King’s Speech« (2010) or »Emma« (1996) are veritable
examples. Colin Firth starring as the artist, can be seen as self-reflexive reference to the heritage film tradition: Firth became famous in his role as paradigmatic costume drama hero Mr Darcy in the BBC TV miniseries of Jane Austen‘s »Pride and Prejudice« (1995), which laid the foundations of the heritage film boom.

A pearl is a sphere WALROND consisting of various layers of nacre that grows in a mussel for years. Then it’s harvested and normally becomes the eye-catcher of a piece of jewellery. We have a look at what kinds of pearls there are, who cultured them first and which quality features they have.

It’s quite a bead that Vermeer gave his »Girl With a Pearl Earring«. Because it’s so big, many experts assume that it can’t be a real pearl. The young lady with her simple attire looks anything but wealthy and just couldn’t afford a jewel this size. Instead, it seems clear that it’s an imitation of a pearl made of glass. But what makes pearls so valuable?
SISTER-MAG.COM
80
GIRL WITH THE PEARL EARRING
Layer by layer Aside from being simply beautiful, you just have to take a look at how a pearl emerges. It grows inside a mussel where, stretched over several years, one layer of nacre after another is formed. For a long time it was thought that the reason for a pearl to develop is the intrusion of a foreign object that is then locked in nacre to save the mussel. However, scientists now assume that the mussel that lives on the seabed should be able to deal with a grain of sand. If it couldn’t, the bottom of the oceans would be filled with pearls. Instead, it’s highly likely that the development of a pearl is triggered by an injury of the inner mantle of the mussel.
81
SISTERMAG 48 | 05 / 2019
Pearls from the river and the sea As you can recognise by the different colours, there are several kinds of pearls. In general, there is a difference between freshwater and saltwater pearls. The former grow in the so-called freshwater pearl mussel that once had a big population in Germany. Today, however, it’s critically endangered which mainly is a result of outright hunts that happened from the Middle Ages onwards. You need to know that an oysterdies when it’s opened violently. Since only one out of 2,000 mussels contains a pearl, many people wandered around and killed one mussel after the other. And it didn’t help that illegal pearl hunts were prohibited by the governments in the 16th century and were severely punished – for example, by cutting off one hand. Even though the freshwater pearl shines less than the specimen from the sea, it was used to make wonderful pieces of jewellery for a long time. In the museum Grünes Gewölbe in Dresden, for example, a necklace is exhibited that consists of 177 pearls from the Vogtland.

GIRL WITH THE PEARL EARRING
New colours ea S th ou S from the From the middle of the 19th century on, the introduction of pearls from the South Sea and Japan in Europe provided alternatives to the white German freshwater pearls. All of a sudden, the beads shone in numerous colours like pink, blue, green and violet! South Sea pearls can even shimmer golden or silver, and Tahitian pearls have a black colour. Initially, hunting for them was even more difficult than for freshwater pearls because divers had to find mussels on the seabed and bring large quantities of them to the water surface. They dove into the depths without a breathing apparatus and were exposed to additional dangers like wild animals and currents. Considering this, it’s no wonder that pearls were a rare and
extremely expensive commodity – until it was possible to culture them. Nowadays, the jewellery industry almost exclusively processes cultured pearls. To get a pearl out of a mussel, the pearl farmer carefully implants a small sphere of nacre and some mantle tissue into it. The chance of the mussel accepting the implant is relatively low; only one out of three mussels produce a pearl. And only ten per cent of them have the quality to reach the market.

Mikimoto building in Taisho
Pioneer Mikimoto
The Japanese Kokichi Mikimoto is considered a pioneer of pearl farming. When he judged a pearl exhibition in 1878, he recognised that most of the pearls had several flaws. So he targeted the cultivation of the perfect pearl. In 1888, he took out a loan to start his first mussel farm. It took him five years and drove him to the verge of ruin until in 1893, he presented the first cultured pearl.
SISTER-MAG.COM
Because the public was sceptical, Mikimoto opened a jewellery store in Tokyo and continued working on producing completely hemispherical pearls that are indistinguishable from natural pearls. In 1905, he finally made it. But it wasn’t until the 1920s when business with cultured pearls started to flourish. Despite the increasing competition, the company Mikimoto has been quite successful until today and designed the crown for the winners of the Miss Universe pageants.
84
GIRL WITH THE PEARL EARRING
AAA Quality In general, natural pearls are much more valuable than cultured ones. Nonetheless, both kinds have to undergo a quality control to determine their value. However, there is no unified system, which makes things a little complicated. Two scales have come into use: Freshwater and Acoya pearls are rated from AAA to A, South Sea and Tahitian pearls from A to D. Pearls with a relatively low quality get an A (freshwater and Akoya) or a D (South Sea and Tahitian), respectively. The distributor undertakes the valuation of the pearls and is oriented towards several criteria. These include the size, the lustre, the quality of the surface and the thickness of the nacre layer. While these categories can be assessed fairly objectively, the colour and the
form depend on the respective zeitgeist. If it is about pieces of jewellery consisting of several pearls, their harmonic composition is also taken into consideration. Pearls that fail the quality control are usually pulverised and sold to the cosmetics industry. Its companies process the powder into creams that are said to slow down the ageing process of the skin.

this case. Proof: these elegantly shimmering fresh-water pearls featuring as a solitaire pendant on silver and gold earrings and necklaces. The modest pieces are feminine and airy and could be worn every day and on special occasions like summer weddings.
But pearls aren’t only for ears and neck: hairclips loaded with artificial pearls are summer’s biggest trend and add a hint of Coco Chanel to every hairstyle. They can be found in every high-street store.

– the Turban – A turban emphasizes a figure, exudes mystery and attracts attention. In some cultures, headscarves are part of the ensemble of a religious dress code. Elsewhere, a turbanlike scarf is worn as an avant-garde fashion accessory. In paintings or photographs, a portrait with a turban usually evokes a special atmosphere.
French 19th century painters such as JEANAUGUSTE-DOMINIQUE INGRES (1780 - 1867) liked to adorn their protagonists with headdress in order to evoke an »EXOTIC« expression.
137
SISTERMAG 48 | 05 / 2019
ingres The most famous naked women in art history derive from INGRES ' artistic hands: THE BATHERS and THE ODALISQUES . The only piece of clothing they wear is a TURBAN ; tied tightly around their hair, or loosely draped or majestically decorated. Apart from the obvious sensual nudity, Ingres' headscarves in connection with the posture of the models accentuates the erotic message of his works.

la grande baigneuse In the painting »LA BAIGNEUSE« from 1807, the young woman wears such a headdress. It appears to slip away on her dark hair. The loosening cloth provokes a moment of exposure, which continues along her naked breast. The frightened expression on the woman's face automatically turns the viewer into a voyeur – caught red-handed.
139
Close, but no less sensual, is »La Grande Baigneuse« (1808, also known as »The Valpinçon Bather«). The intimate pictorial language of the painting is emphasized not only by the room separated by cloths, prominent rear view and closed posture of the model, but also by the tightly tied headscarf.
SISTERMAG 48 | 05 / 2019
La Grande Odalisque »LA GRANDE ODALISQUE« ,
created by the renowned classicist in 1814, shows the turban on the woman's head solemnly staged in comparison to the two previous works. It is com plemented by tasteful pearl hair ornaments. Here the seductive gaze is led SISTER-MAG.COM
downwards along the naked back to further accessories: a fan of peacock feathers, pleated and opulent fabrics, an opium pipe and an incense burner on the right edge of the picture. The odalisque's turban reflects the solemn and self-confident atmos phere of the scenery.
140
GIRL WITH THE PEARL EARRING
What is striking about the paintings is that they always feature a similar cloth: a light, striped fabric, sometimes with and other times without fringes and ornaments. The same can be observed through Ingres' great inspiration, RAPHAEL (Raffaello Santi, 1483 - 1520). The Italian High Renaissance painter used the same headscarf on his lover and model, LA FORNARINA , in 1518/1520, which Ingres' odalisque wears three hundred years later. Like the »great concubine«, the baker's daughter in Raphael's painting appears confident and seductive. 141
Fornarina's headscarf is tied in the same way as that of the French odalisque. No wonder, since Ingres knew the work and life story of his idol Raphael very well. He fantasized about both in the painting »RAFFAELLO E LA FORNARINA« from 1814 in the studio of the Italian master. In the background of this painting you can see the famous Madonna della Sedia (1512 - 1514) by Raphael, whose head is covered by a similar cloth. Raphael was inspired by the fashion of the Balzo: turbanlike headwear worn by both women and men of Italy's upper classes. SISTERMAG 48 | 05 / 2019
Jean-Léon Gérôme Cleopatra and Caesar
Ingres' work was also greatly inspired by the fashion of his own time. In addition to peacock feathers, powder trousers, transparent fabrics and incense vessels, turbans were a part of the »À LA TURQUE« trend emerging in the 19th century. THE TURQUERIE describes picturesque oriental images depicting harem women, slaves, horsemen or Arabian horses. Artists such as INGRES, JEAN-LÉON GÉRÔME or EUGÈNE DELACROIX fell for this hype and used the motifs to create arabesque imagery.
Delacroix Cleopatra and Peasant
Interest in the Orient can be traced back to Napoleon's expedition in Egypt (1798 - 1801), the conquest of Algeria by French troops from 1830 onwards, as well as travelogues and literary accounts like the story of The Arabian Nights. Ingres, for example, developed his fascination for the exotic only from stories. He himself did not travel to any Islamic country.
Just how much Ingres was inspired by the idea of a harem can be seen in the painting »The Turkish Bath« (Le Bain Turc), which he painted at 82 years old in 1862. SISTER-MAG.COM

LE BAIN TURC In this masterpiece, one encounters the familiar nude female figure from the rear view sporting a secured headscarf. But there is also a multitude of other headdresses. The round painting (tondo), which resembles a keyhole, reveals Ingres' oversexualized impression of a hammam. The ORIENTAL PAINTINGS , in which primarily lightskinned ladies with turbans roll around on floors or upholstered furniture, are depictions of pure fantasy. They formed an alternative to the well-known, naked
mythological figures in order to once again legitimately display the female body in an artistic context. The oriental setting, which is accented by Islamic accessories and in which these fantastical performances take place, shows on the one hand the ÂťEurocentric viewÂŤ of the southern and eastern Mediterranean during the 19th century. On the other hand, the works of this period also reveal a strong longing for escape from everyday and social constraints as well as the prevailing, prudish marital morality.

EXPLAIN IN YOUR OWN WORDS THE IDEA OF YOUR COMPANY / PRODUCT? WHAT ARE YOU DOING?
what3words is the simplest way to talk about location. We have divided the world into 3m x 3m squares, each with a unique 3 word address. For example, the front door to our office can be found at ///filled.count. soap. Now, people can refer to any precise
location – a delivery entrance, a picnic spot or a drone landing point – using three simple words. what3words is across four key industries: automobility, travel, logistics and humanitarian. But it is also used by individuals all around the world to discover, save and share places. Our partners include Mercedes-Benz, who launched the world’s first car with built-in what3words voice navigation. Mercedes-Benz, Ford and TomTom drivers can now navigate anywhere in the world by saying three words to their car. Global logistics giant DB Schenker

Meanwhile, Domino’s Pizza is delivering food hotter and faster to 3 word addresses around the world, whilst travellers are navigating with ease with the help of Lonely Planet’s and Airbnb hosts’ 3 word address listings. And numerous humanitarian partners are using the technology to help people in need: The United Nations has adopted the technology for disaster response and relief, in addition to a selection of British Emergency Services.

WHAT WA S THE INSPIR ATION FOR YOUR IDE A?
Co-founder and CEO, Chris Sheldrick, worked in the music industry - organising live music events around the world. When bands and equipment constantly got lost trying to find venues and festival locations, it became clear that addressing just wasn’t good enough - and the problem was universal. He tried giving out GPS coordinates, but they were hard for people to input into their car or device, and near impossible to communicate correctly over the phone. Mistakes were easy to make and hard to pick up on until it was
146
GIRL WITH THE PEARL EARRING
too late. He sat down with a friend to see if we could find a solution that was as accurate as coordinates - but concise and memorable too. Together they devised a way to turn accurate GPS coordinates into user-friendly word combinations, and the first what3words algorithm was born. HOW DOES FINDING A PLACE OF INTEREST WITH WHAT3WORDS WORK?
what3words is available for free on both iOS and Android app stores, and also online at
map.what3words.com. To find your current location, or a place of interest near you, tap on the ‘current location’ button and move the map to find the exact location you want to share. The 3 word address will appear at the bottom of the screen, which you can share via your favourite messaging service or navigate to using any of our navigation partners. To find the 3 word address of another location, enter the traditional street address and then move the map to tweak the 3 word address. Switching what3words to satellite mode can make this easier too.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE WHAT3WORDS SYSTEM AND OTHER NAVIGATION SYSTEMS? WHAT IS THE ADVANTAGE OF WHAT3WORDS?
what3words is an addressing system, as opposed to a mapping or navigation system. We provide a simple and highly accurate way to communicate location, which can, in turn, be inputted into navigation systems - be them navigation apps, or in-car systems, like Ford’s or Mercedes-Benz’ MBUX. HOW DO YOU FINANCE YOUR COMPANY? HOW DO YOU EARN MONEY?
what3words is free and will always be free for individuals to use. We also have a humanitarian programme that allows qualifying NGOs to loan out technology for free or a nominal fee. For business use, we sell licences for our products including our API and SDKs. SISTER-MAG.COM
HOW DO YOU MARKET WHAT3WORDS?
what3words’ marketing strategy involves working closely with our partners to maximise the noise around the integration. Partners who integrate what3words work with our in-house team to receive bespoke marketing tool kits, assets and access to the full marketing team to ensure the new partnership is a success. It’s key within our marketing to highlight the problems that poor addressing causes, whilst highlighting clear and tangible use-cases for

what3words. Aside from partner marketing, over the past year, we’ve seen a huge rise in brands using what3words within popular culture. Our technology has been woven into plotlines, including an episode of NCIS Los Angeles, and was used for filming on Ready Player One. We’ve addressed several music festivals, and have been used by big name bands like Imagine Dragons and Mumford & Sons to better engage with their fans with creative, location-based competitions. 149

We want deliveries and services worldwide to use 3 word addresses to become more efficient. We want people to use 3 word addresses in e-commerce platforms, food-delivery apps and to list them where what3words can be a standard for locating people in disaster situations, saving lives and making better use of aid resources.

Where in the world is Oman?
This is a question I am often asked, and the first reactions to my answer are quite surprising, if not a bit nervous. According to legend, the country where the famous sailor Sinbad came from is located, together with Saudi Arabia, Yemen and the Emirates, on the Arabian Peninsula, directly on the Arabian Sea.

ÂťAnd you want to move there alone as a woman for the next few months? Isn't that too dangerous?ÂŤ Well, the answer is short and sweet: NO! Oman is one of the safest countries in the world. As a woman I can move freely and travel alone. When I visited the country for the first time, I knew that this was the kind of place I had longed to visit. Was it the people, the culture, the landscape? Probably a little bit of everything. Above all, I was impressed by the respect for women and openness towards all religions. I am here for the next few months, learning the local language in a private college and wanting to know as much as possible about this wonderful and inspiring culture.
What I can already confirm is that Oman is an ideal travel destination for women looking to find inner peace. This is not difficult in Oman because there are many places where you can recharge your batteries.
The best time to travel is between October and early April, otherwise you're dealing with some extreme heat in the land of incense. 155

These are to be found at the luxury hotel ANANTARA JABAL AKHDAR (///suspended.deluges.sedation) .
Only about two hours by car from Muscat, the hotel is located on a canyon at an altitude of 2000 meters. It's a truly unforgettable journey, winding along a serpentine road. With an SUV you also have the advantage of going off-road into pure nature. One is rewarded with incredibly BEAUTIFUL VANTAGE POINTS (///suspended.deluges.sedation).

»Green Mountain«, and takes its name from the garden terraces on which the famous pomegranates, apricots and almonds grow. The rose water of JABAL AKHDAR ! is also quite renowned. From the end of March to the end of April, the Damascene roses transform the mountains into a delicate pink sea. What better way to take home some rose water than straight from the source? Roses also sweeten your stay at the spa. Although the location is isolated in the mountains, it never gets boring in the hotel: a wide range of activities is available, including hiking.

I recommend the ACTIVITY WALL – a mixture of hiking and adventure – to courageous ladies not afraid of heights. The garden of the hotel, whose architecture recalls an Omani village, is a highlight during the day as well as at night. Here you will find native trees, flowers and of course the famous roses. At night, the paths are only dimly lit to allow you to see the abundantly starry sky. This will stay with you forever.

nizwa,
Oman is full of fortresses and castles. The Omanis have been settled since ancient times and are not a nomadic people. One of the most beautiful and largest castles is located in NIZWA . How convenient that it is on the way back to Muscat from the hotel! Today it is regarded as a city of artists, while in the Middle Ages it served as the headquarters of the Imams. The castle has been completely renovated. The view over the city is phenomenal: WHITE HOUSE ROOFTOPS protrude between palm trees with rock formations reaching infinitely into the horizon.

The castle is surrounded by bazaars and artists' studios. Old handicrafts as far as the eye can see. But beware: the artist market is very expensive. The local pottery, hand-woven baskets, incense pots, etc. can be bought at the SOUK MUTRAH (///shower.

in Muscat for much less. In the souq I recommend a visit to the brothers with the blue eyes. Here I regularly buy spices, nuts, dried fruit, rose water and natural soaps from incense and roses. SISTER-MAG.COM

Oman's landscape, with its mountains, wadis and oases, is perfect for connecting your soul with nature and the universe. One of my favorite places is HAWIYAT NAJM PARK (///pretty.lockable.messed) . There is a sinkhole with turquoise green
water in the middle of this desert terrain. The water is so clear that you can see the bottom from a bird's eye view. The Bimmah crater was caused by a meteorite impact, according to local lore. But this has already been refuted. The water, a mixture of salt and fresh water, is refreshing and pure. Not a bad spot to take a dip.
///radicals.highly.mosaic
wadi shab Wadis make for a great opportunity to bathe. One of the best known is WADI SHAB . Getting there requires about an hour of traversing big rocks and nature trails through a gorge between two mountains. It feels like walking through the fairy tale of Aladdin or Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves. There are hardly any people on the way and you are overwhelmed by the picturesque nature. The paths are not entirely
harmless, but it's not enough to make you turn around. Your curiosity will carry you towards what's hidden behind the next rock. Sometimes there are small waterfalls, sometimes banana gardens, which are supplied with water by a millennium-old irrigation system. The hike is rewarded by natural pools with light green water. You can master the exhausting way back with a smile!

Economic and societal conditions in the Netherlands during the 17th century led to an unprecedented flood of paintings. Even farmers turned into art collectors while several world-famous painters had to run inns or sell tulips to make a living.

AN OVERVIEW OF
Dutch painting of the Golden Ages Text: ROBERT EBERHARDT
Every national history of art has crowned a certain time period as »golden«. The reign of Sun King Louis XIV in France, Weimar Classicism in Germany, and Italy’s renaissance years with Leonardo, Michelangelo, and Raffael come to mind. The Netherlands’ equivalent is the Baroque era. Over the course of the 17th century, the small northwestern European country became central to world politics with its perfect location for commercial shipping. This brought a wave of scientific
SISTER-MAG.COM
innovation, liberal movements, and religious tolerance, which were boosted by capital and public appreciation for art. Artists produced for an increasingly wealthy society that demanded fantastic works. Art history usually avoids focusing on the rigid borders of nationally defined cultural spaces but nonetheless, the phenomenon of the »Dutch Golden Age« can be seen as a unique accumulation of ideas, pictures and art.

(...) But most of us will have also experienced the following phenomenon: on the way to a famous painting, someone stops as their eyes are drawn to a still life with flowers and tiny, realistic insects (...) When visiting bigger galleries, most visitors follow the indicated paths that leads to the wellknown masterpieces – and thus also subscribe to the idea that
there are few outstanding pieces aside from those that are worth the most. Names that have become global brands draw more visitors than the actual aesthetic features of a painting. Supported by blockbuster exhibitions and narrow-minded teaching of art, this becomes a truth for every piece of art from the old masters to modern art. But most of us will have also experienced the following phenomenon: on the way to a famous painting, someone stops as their eyes are drawn to a still life with flowers and tiny, realistic insects; a still life with oysters and half-peeled lemons or portraits that feature intricate lace gleaming in front of heavy, dark fabrics. Those paintings convince with a unique kind of craftsmanship, perfect composition, and the inexplicable rules of timeless art. They are remnants from the height of art: the Dutch Golden Age.

Jacob van Ruisdael Wheat Fields, circa 1670 Oil on canvas, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City.
Widely defined, this term is applied to the entire 17th century in the Netherlands, Where economy and an appreciation of art converged. Around 1650, more than 70,000 paintings were painted in a single year. This number alone proves the huge public interest in art, which was unprecedented at the time and remains unrivalled today. It also became common to invest in art. During those years, art was not

for the opulent elite but rather common. Small tradesmen, officers, craftspeople and clerks could show their increased social status by purchasing art. Even farmers participated by buying intricately carved boxes, turning works made from wood and elaborately decorated beds. This also increased the general understanding of art, justifying the term ÂťGolden AgeÂŤ.

Many studios also functioned as workshops as painters specialised to work in a variety of styles: portraits, historical paintings, still life, nautical motifs and more. New forms of painting were established, like genre pictures and landscape painting. The buyers wanted to see their well-known surroundings immortalised beautifully and flatteringly in paint. Every selfrespecting citizen had their family portrayed by a painter. Only one genre remained less popular: traditionally religious paintings were avoided by the newly reformed and proudly rich Dutch.

Frans Hals, Portrait of a man, 1618- 1620, Oil on canvas on panel Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, Kassel.
Still life works were most popular, featuring elements of perishable nature like rotting fruit or symbolic items of fragile life and death like blown-out candles. They follow the baroque theme of »memento mori« and remind of the inevitable ending of all wealth and power: death. There are way too many great painters from this period of time to even attempt introducing them. If you want to get an idea of what the »Golden Age« really was about, I recommend opening your eyes and feelings to paintings in museumsmade by artists who managed to turn rather banal motifs into world-famous paintings and were elevated to the ranks of eternal masters: Willem Claesz Heda and Willem Kalf for still life, Jan van Goyen and Jacob van Ruisdael for landscapes, Jan Steen for satires of farm

life, Frans Hals for potraits, Emanuel de Witt for paintings of architecture, Gerard de Borch for genre paintings, Willem van de Velde for paintings of ships, Jan van Huysum for flowers, Pieter Claesz for silverware, and Abraham van Beijeren with his oysters and lobsters.

The high demand for pictures turned painter’s guilds from a pretty addition within a community into a central element of urban economy. Already in the 16th Century there were more masters of painting and graphics in Antwerp than butchers and bakers combined. otspots like Haarlem, Delft, Utrecht, Leiden, and The Hague boasted industrial revolution levels of output: every inhabitant owned 2.5 paintings and around 700 Dutch painters produced around 100 paintings each in a year. Less than ten percent of those have survived as part of private and public collections.

Gerard ter Borch, The Concert, 1660-1665, Öl on oak, Gemäldegalerie, Berlin.
The price of a painting was incredibly low during this flood of art. Some craftsmen could afford to put around 60 paintings in their parlours, rivalling the collections of some museums. Many artists were affected by this: Jan Steen ran an inn (where he found inspiration for his portraits of society), Jan van Goyen sold tulips, and tax collectors, doctors, and carpenters were among famous artists that can be found on today’s museums. Artists SISTER-MAG.COM
that could work across several genres like Rembrandt or Jan Vermeer were able to earn a living, but their mastery was only appreciated much later. As per usual, the most profitable market was the one catering to the needs of aristocrats, states, or religious leaders that were situated in Flanders or even at the courts of Italy, France, and Spain, where the Dutch painters Gerard Dou and Peter Paul Rubens worked.

STEP 1 Heat a non-stick pan and slowly fry the bacon to release all the fat until it is crispy and brown. This will take around 15 minutes.
STEP 2 Heat your frying oil in a big pot. Add leek and celery, steam them with a lid on until leek turns slightly transparent. Add the peas and stir well. Fry everything for a few minutes.
STEP 3 Add stock, water and bay leaves. Bring to a boil and let it simmer at medium temperature for around 20 minutes. Add water if necessary. Stir occasionally to prevent burning.

leaves and puree the soup roughly. Leave it more or less chunky depending on your taste.
STEP 5 Put the pot back on the heat. Add potatoes, carrots, bacon and sausage as well as the bay leaves you previously took out. Stir well and cook for at least another 30 minutes – the longer you leave it, the more of the sweet flavour can develop.
STEP 6 Season with salt and pepper and carefully add some nutmeg (Try after every pinch to make sure it’s not too much.)

STEP 1 Put the chicken and add minced garlic, onions, ginger, Kecab Manis, lemon juice and coconut oil. Mix everything well so the meat is completely coated in the marinade.
STEP 2 Put a lid on the bowl or seal it with cling film. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
STEP 3 Meanwhile, soak the skewers in water so they won’t burn while frying. Prepare the peanut sauce by mixing all the ingredients into a smooth sauce.
STEP 4 Take the chicken out of the marinade and put it onto the skewers.
STEP 5 Grill meat on charcoal barbecue or fry it in a pan. Serve with the peanut sauce and optionally with sliced red chilis and fresh cucumber salad.

If you want perfectly formed small pancakes, use a pancake ring.
STEP 1 Add all of the ingredients for the batter except for the egg whites and salt to a bowl. Mix very well with an electric mixer and let the batter rest for 15 minutes..
STEP 2 Meanwhile, beat the egg whites and salt until very stiff. After 15 minutes, carefully fold them into the prepared batter. Dissolve small bubbles of egg white by smearing them onto the side off the bowl.
STEP 3 Heat the butter in a pan. Add apples and let them sweat in the butter for about 1 minute while flipping them continuously. Add cinnamon and sugar, stir. Let the apples caramelise over medium heat. As soon as they’re soft and slightly golden, put them onto a plate and set aside.

STEP 4 Heat a second pan. Once it’s hot, add the pancetta and fry it over a medium heat until you’re satisfied with the crispiness. Turn once or twice – this will take around 15 minutes.
STEP 5 Add 1 tbsp of oil to the pan you used for the apples and pour in one ladle of the batter. Carefully swirl the pan until you have a round pancake – or add a small ladle to your pancake ring if you chose to use one. Put 3 slices of apple on the still slightly sticky top of the pancake. Flip it when the bottom has turned golden brown and fry until done. Put on a plate and garnish with more apple and the crispy pancetta.
STEP 6 Repeat until the batter is used up. Serve with syrup.

Since the artwork of this issue is situated in The Hague, we thought it would be fitting to ask blogger and instagrammer Eliane Roest, ELIANEROEST.NL , to show us the city! The Hague, a city located at the beach always brings a different vibe than any other kind of town. Follow along with her city guide: Before we get started, what you must know about The Hague. The Hague is a city on the western coast of the Netherlands and the capital of the province of South Holland. It is also the seat of government of the Netherlands and home to the royal family. You simply can’t miss THE BINNENHOF when you visit The Hague, but I left it out as I’m sure you’ll pass by and there are far more interesting places to spot! Starting in The Hague in the early morning, our first need is to get our hands on a delicious cup of coffee. Last year, the people of the famous LOT SIXTY ONE COFFEE ROASTERS opened a new venue in The Hague. Let’s go in and order a cup of joe! Still hungry, get yourself some breakfast too. HOW DID YOU GET THE IDE A TO START A BUSINESS? WHAT IS YOUR MOTIVATION BEHIND JOR A DA HL? W H AT DO YOU THINK MAKES GARDENING DIFFICULT FOR SOME PEOPLE?
WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT DO YOU DO?
My name is Jora, I live with my husband and two children in Potsdam, and founded a studio for garden and product design last autumn. We develop special plant collections and modular planting plans that are sold via our online shop. We also advise garden owners on how to transform their gardens into flowering oases without extra costs or hassle.
Until ten years ago, I didn't know anything about gardening and was a certified city person. Then I moved to Potsdam and for the first time, I had my own garden in front of my door. It was unkempt and featured a lot of concrete, but I quickly started digging and planting every free minute. Over the next three years, I would visit the garden centre, spend a lot of money on kitschy plants, plant them in the wrong places, and

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS MISSING IN THE FLOWER SEED MARKET? WHAT PRODUCTS DO YOU HAVE SISTER-MAG.COM
I first discovered how wonderful and important annual flowers are for one's garden through the "Slowflower Movement". In the United States, England, and, most recently, in Germany, cut flowers are grown regionally and organically to counter florists' flowers from overseas, which are full of pesticides and grown in poor conditions. The varieties used are bombastic: subtle vintage colours, beautiful pastel tones – the exact opposite of the abrasive colours found at the garden centre. Until now, it was complicated to order these varieties online from abroad. I wanted to change that!

After studying philosophy and completing an internship as a journalist, I spent years as a creative director designing interactive exhibits. I designed multimedia spaces and communicated complicated content and brand messages in an accessible way. That sounds unrelated, but it's not. Basically, I'm doing the same thing now – only with plants instead of media. And that feels much better! This evolution arose out of a crisis situation.

After the birth of our first child, it became clear to me that I cannot simply return to my old job if I want to be a part of my child's life. Working hours in the creative industry are brutal. I knew I had to quit my own job to meet all my needs. Now, five years later, I'm totally grateful and can't imagine a better job. W H AT A RE MODUL A R PERENNIAL PLANTING PLANS? WHY DO YOU NEED THEM?
To lay perennial beds is really a high art, although perennials are usually very easy to maintain. There is, however, an incredible number of them, all different in height, SISTER-MAG.COM
flowering time, demands, colour, shape, etc. They flower over many years, are much easier to maintain than lawns, and create an incredible atmosphere for your garden. Our planting plans allow you to save long book studies and initial failures, as well as expensive garden architects. They are scalable to almost any size and show exactly where which plant is positioned in the bed. The combinations are extremely robust and aesthetically pleasing. We have been working on them for more than

two years together with a botanist and perennial expert and are proud to have created something new and unique. You can be incredibly creative with it. My hope is that we make it easier for garden owners to access these incredible plants! WHERE DO YOUR SEEDS COME FROM? ARE YOU AL SO INVOLVED IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE SEEDS?
We buy special seed varieties exclusively from traditional Dutch or British companies. So far, we have had everything made in 217

Germany. The seeds are filled in bags here and distributed to workshops. Since automated filling always requires large quantities of one variety and I would like to experiment with unusual varieties in smaller quantities, we are looking for a way to efficiently fill the seeds by hand. It's not that easy. Antique seed measuring spoons, which are no longer produced and must be sourced at the market, are suitable for this. In principle, we would like to be more independent and flexible in our production and in this sense see ourselves more as a manufacturer. WHAT DOE S A WORKING DAY LOOK LIKE FOR YOU? DO YOU SPEND A LOT OF TIME OUTSIDE OR DO YOU HAVE AN OFFICE LIFE?
I often work inside in front of my MacBook, which isn't much different from my old job. With the birth of our first child, I set up a small coworking office in our house and try to be SISTER-MAG.COM
outside in my garden and experimental field as often as possible. It really is a luxury to walk through the tulip field on business calls. I meet Marion and Christiana for meetings and once a month, I torture myself and my husband with taxes and numbers. I basically try to work in such a way that I can spend a lot of time with my children. That would not be possible in my old job. I want to prove that you can also – or even just – be a successful mother! WHO ARE YOUR CUSTOMERS? WHERE DO THEY COME FROM AND HOW DO THEY FIND YOU?
The first design projects started years ago, when I didn't even have a website and was simply endorsed by friends. Meanwhile, the number of clicks is increasing, especially through Instagram. I've never been the social media type and I'm discovering this world all over again. Now I just have to learn to put my phone aside. The urge is enormous. Otherwise, we have always relied

on brick and mortar retail. I love browsing specialty shops and want to do something to preserve this sensual, analogue world. My target demographic is frighteningly similar to me. Female, around 40, children, and a great desire for a stylish yet simple life. Inside as well as outside WHAT ARE YOUR GOAL S FOR THE NEXT FIVE YEARS?
I'd really love to write a book. One that I would have needed when I started gardening. One which shows that most of what's in a garden is superfluous and which is aesthetically inspiring. I want to continue to develop many new products around my plant collections and help garden owners to create flowering and really easy-to-carefor gardens.
under the glowing red sumac tree)? People should make the whole garden their own. I also make people aware that the garden is a link between the house and the surrounding landscape. You create harmony by appropriating elements from these two spheres. So please: No Japanese garden in Bavaria! Of course, a primary part of my work is to bring the right plants in the right place. This is one of the very few instances where more truly is more!
WHAT IS THE GARDEN DESIGN PROCESS? WHAT QUESTIONS DO YOU ASK CUSTOMERS?
It all starts with cleaning up for me. Often I suggest a garden deconstruction. Do you need two terraces if it is much nicer to simply place the deckchair on the lawn, exactly where it is best at the moment (in spring with the fragrant lilac, in autumn 219

W H AT H A P P E N E D SO FAR »A YEAR OF ART« – That's what we
called 2019 for our sisterMAG issues. In January, it started with an impressionist painting by the French painter GUSTAVE CAILLEBOTTE followed by a colorful and abstract screenprint by ABEL MARTÍN. In March, the famous »Thinker« of the sculptor AUGUSTE RODIN was the inspiration for the magazine, in April GIOVANNA GARZONI'S »Vase of flowers with two shells«. How will this year continue? With many great artworks by KLIMT, BOTTICELLI AND RICHTER. We can't wait to hear your thoughts!
