d e a r s i s t e r m ag r eaders, It’s summer – holiday season – everybody’s on vacation. A lot of time is spent on the road or on rails, especially because more and more people try to fly less and already see the ride as vacation. However, this phenomenon of not only enjoying the destination but also the itinerary is not that new. Those trends are called »slow travel« and »van life« now but since the beginning of the age of mobility, people have been making road trips to explore the world on the way and to find themselves in the meantime. The movement does something to the people too. Author and psychologist Nele Langosch studies this kick, this thrill of speed. That’s why it seemed very appropriate for us to use Roy Lichtenstein’s painting »In The Car« as idea provider for our summer issue.
collection in Porto, Portugal. Since we spent time there, we discovered the trend city in the South of Europe for you. For the new Digital Ladies Travel feature, Mela Mörtenbeck compiled the best tips for the – as we think – insider tip country Slovenia. And our food contributor Karolina Wiercigroch took a very special road trip through Kyrgyzstan – a country on the Silk Road with breath-taking nature and many discoveries. We also took a long look at the people »In the Car«. I don’t know how you feel when you look at them but the two depicted people don’t seem to have things straightened out with each other. Looking at the couple triggered many ideas on the subject of relationships and their end – something that is often accelerated during a vacation. There is even a museum devoted to the end of relationships: the »Museum of Broken Relationships« in Zagreb, Croatia. Our author Martina

Klaric was there and talked to the founders about the background and the small and big anecdotes that define the exhibits of the museum.
Apart from that, you find a lot of inspiration for DIY summer dresses, delicious pop-art desserts (I’m just saying: exploding strawberry sorbet!), interior design ideas inspired by the year 1963, digital apps and gadgets and, most notably, book recommendations for your own road trip and movies for cosy summer evenings.
This issue seemed to be the right kick-off for a new sisterMAG series we have been planning for a while now. As a bilingual magazine with a very international network, we have a lot of contributors who live in intercultural relationships. Especially for the kind of people who go abroad for a while to study or to work, it’s a dream to find the ultimate love story in the expat country and to live this happily ever after. But how does reality really look like? We didn’t want

A fast drive, skydiving and adventure holidays: some people are always looking for a thrill – and take considerable risks to get it. Psychologists have been doing research on this need for new experiences for a long time. And they found out one thing: a few heart palpitations can lead to lots of happiness.
The landscape is rushing by. The couple in Roy Lichtenstein’s »IN THE CAR« seems to be moving at incredible speed. The blonde woman is being pressed into her seat. The driver is looking over at her as if to check if she is scared – he seems to fully enjoy the fast drive.

Not every one of us shares this SENSE OF ADVENTUROUSNESS . While some enjoy rollercoasters and motorbikes and use their vacations to jump off cliffs or backpack through foreign countries, others despise this kind of thrill. They prefer a calm routine and being in situations that surprise them as little as possible.

Psychologists call this search for thrills »SENSATION SEEKING« . The term was coined by the American professor of psychology MARVIN ZUCKERMAN who extensively researched this trait in the 1960 s . Using a questionnaire that he had developed himself, Zuckerman was able to show that every person has a different need for new and intense stimuli. People with a high score can

usually not wait to jump off a plane while strapped to a parachute, run the next triathlon or watch a horror movie. The special quality about this group is that these »sensation seekers« don’t feel crippling fear while doing these things – instead they get a thrill that is a mixture of tension and delight. To achieve this feeling, they will even risk danger.

People such as the Austrian extreme athlete FELIX BAUMGARTNER who made headlines by jumping from the stratosphere in 2012 . Or the German JOCHEN SCHWEIZER who bungeejumped from a helicopter at 2500 metres in 1997 – today, he successfully sells adventure-gift cards to fellow sensation seekers. In fact, tremendous adventures seem more attainable than ever: every single year, more people

climb MOUNT EVEREST than ever before. Psychologists know that a certain mixture of tension and relaxation is perceived as pleasant. But every person differs in their perception of an ideal level of excitement. Some people already get enough of a kick out of action-packed computer games or movies while others have to climb skyscrapers to get the same thrill.

This substance kick-starts the reward systems of our brains. The result: we feel amazing. »Sensation seekers« have the need to experience this state of mind over and over again. They become repeat offenders who live by the motto of »HIGHER, FURTHER, FASTER« to meet their own boundaries. Researchers put

people with different appreciation levels of risk on the same climbing course – a task that is usually a trigger for the release of stress hormones. But the »sensation seekers« had the same level of stress hormones in their blood before and after completing the course. They were sure that they were able to master the task without getting harmed.

But what exactly determines whether we love risks or not? Genes seem to play a huge part: it looks as though our need for thrills is inherited for the most part. But how strongly this adventurousness is pronounced also depends on non-genetic factors such as experience and role models. Age and gender play a part, too: young people and men often look for change. As we get older, our desire for safety increases.

Be careful: those who tread closely to the brink might fall. Some underestimate danger and lose their life during risky adventures. Other »SENSATION

are being led astray by their need for variety: they take drugs to live through stronger and more extreme experiences or even become criminals as some research shows. But for the most part, a
little adventure is very healthy. Studies have shown that those who seek risks are more content than others. This might be because they are more successful. »NO RISK, NO FUN« as they say. And you don’t have to start with skydiving – looking beyond your regular experiences and being open to new things can be enough to make anyone surprisingly happy.

With the invention of the automobile, American popular culture has turned to female experiences of mobility for the very first time. In this little overview, we will show you the all-male genre of the road movie actually discovered women.

the road as semantic space The road has a long tradition as semantic space in Western culture: It is a dynamic place, where societal norms can be broken up. For the road functions as an IN-BETWEEN-SPACE : between private home and public domain, homeland and abroad, mobility and stasis. From a historical point of view, travelling has never been genderless: For centuries, women were not allowed to be out and about - due to patriarchal gender politics without a chaperone, husband or servant. Travelling alone as a

woman implied putting oneself in danger – physically and morally. Thus, women walking around the cityscape on their own were often considered to be prostitutes during the 19th century, the Other of a bourgeois femininity. The invention of the automobile in 1886 enabled women of the middleclasses to travel freely, whether on their own or together. In 1909, ALICE HUYLER RAMSAY crossed the American country by car - as the first woman ever to do so. From the 1920s onwards, mass motorisation helped to create new

female perspectives on roads. With the rise of SECOND WAVE FEMINISM during the Sixties, female directors and novelists turned to those new experiences of female mobility, which such a culture of the automobile brought about.

This was a little sensation considering the fact that travelling had been dominated by men since ancient times. Western travel literature takes recourse to the powerful narrative of the Odyssey, Homer’s epic poems about Odysseus journeys. While Odysseus travels around the world for 20 years, his wife Penelope stays at their home. Western narratives have time and again used this genderspecific model of travelling. Whereas the man is active,

moves around and discovers space dynamically, the woman is constructed as passive and static in literature, who stays at home. The binary oppositions are quite clear: He, the adventurer, she the housewife. She may be moving the plot, but she herself remains at one place. As research in literary studies has shown, western women’s literature often focussed on the MOTIF OF WAITING , and mostly waiting for love – just like in Jane Austen’s novels.

the road movie & the road novel In
the »FREEDOM OF THE ROAD« is a powerful, national myth, which is an integral part of American popular culture. Literature and films about the road established themselves from a COUNTERCULTURAL RESISTANCE against the American establishment. No other »BEAT GENERATION« text has shaped the road genre so much than Jack Kerouac’s »ON THE ROAD« (1957) , which outlines travelling as a rebellion against

context,

normative domesticity during the 1950s. With his story about sex, drugs and Jazz, Kerouac deconstructs the stereotypical ÂťAmerican Way of LifeÂŤ. Both of his protagonists Sal Paradise and Dean Moriarty hitchhike on cargo trains, in stolen cars or in busses across the USA, from New York to Mexico. Their restless wanderings westwards are an expression of a modern sense of life. The novel also inscribes

itself into a male travel tradition, for it uses classical motifs of adventure, the mythological quest and male bonding.

RIDER«
road
movie »EASY (1969) encapsulated
the »COUNTER CULTURE« movement. The film has been described as a »touchstone for a generation«. After a successful cocaine deal, the dropouts Wyatt and Billy embark on a journey with their motorbikes from Los Angeles to New Orleans. Easy Rider captures the specific lifestyle of the HIPPIE MOVEMENT with its film aesthetics, which had profound effects on film aesthetics and the genre of the road movie: Spectacular panorama shots of the American West take turns SISTER-MAG.COM
with moving images of driving motorbikes. Loud folk- and rock music invest the movie with the distinctive Woodstock sound of the Sixties. Escape and breaking away from old structures are integral parts of the plot. The iconography of the road is reminiscent of the FRONTIER-HEROES of the West. The road movie establishes itself as a modern, all-American genre, as it captures the FOUNDATIONAL MYTH OF THE FRONTIER , the westward movement of the early settlers across the American continent.

women in road movies:
thelma & louise (1991) To cast the all-male genre of the road movie with female protagonists, would challenge the ancient travel narrative of the Odyssey and break up patriarchal gender norms. Director Ridley Scott has spectacularly realized such a female buddy road movie with his surprise box-office hit »THELMA & LOUISE« (1991) . For the first time altogether, a mainstream road movie shows two women behind the wheel. With SUSAN SARANDON (Louise) and
GEENA DAVIES (Thelma) as main
cast, Thelma & Louise inverts the genre conventions of the road movie in a ground-breaking way. At the same time, the narrative takes recourse to classical motifs of road movies: The reason that makes them drive across the country is an escape from the law. Thelma and Louise want to take a spontaneous trip in Louise’s Ford Thunderbird convertible. When Thelma is almost raped in a bar, Louise shoots the attacker dead.

They decide to escape to Mexico. It is also the camera shots that refer to classical road movie aesthetics: In calm panorama shots, the American West is depicted as open land. Some scenes are reminiscent of the allmasculine genre of the Western, when Thelma and Louise are revealed as outlaws amongst red rocks and dusty roads. Mobility is shown as an adventure of female empowerment here. The car is turned into a myth of female freedom. But in Thelma & Louise, the departure from home ends with a voluntary self-exclusion from society ). Attention spoiler
alert: Having arrived at the Grand Canyon, both protagonists jump off a cliff in their car, while the moving film image comes to a halt in a freeze frame. How much the film influenced the style of female buddy road movies becomes clear when looking at the vast array of intertextual references. The legendary ending has been quoted, for instance, in the road movie »BOYS ON THE SIDE« (1995) with Whoopie Goldberg, when she huffs to her fellow travel companions: »I am not going over a cliff for you two, so just forget it«

tammy (2014) The
US-American comedy »TAMMY« (2014) can be seen as a humorous re-negotiation of the female buddy road movie with Melissa McCarthy in the eponymous leading role. When Tammy loses her job and husband all at once on the same day, she embarks on a journey to Niagara Falls with her grandmother. With its choice of actors, Tammy already refers to its powerful pretext Thelma &
Louise. For no other than Susan Sarandon (known from her famous part as Louise) plays the role of Tammy’s grandma Pearl. Both protagonists go on a journey of self-discovery and self-destruction respectively: Criminal episodes (that are so typical for the road movie genre) are enriched with slapstick scenes, for instance, when Tammy wants to rob a cashier in a fast food restaurant and

demands an apple turnover to go with the money. On their journey, they meet a series of impressive women, who all challenge and question stereotypical images of femininity in Hollywood. Behind its humorous chaos, Tammy also addresses the serious aspects of the ÂťAmerican Way of LifeÂŤ: alcoholism, questions of motherhood and family belonging. Here, the film uses the genre conventions of the road movie that is per se

already a breaking away from old structures or a rejection of traditions. From the 2010s onwards, Melissa McCarthy embodied a new Hollywood femininity. Her films show strong women, who swear, fight and are obscene. Nonetheless, Tammy was not well received by critics, maybe because of this brute femininity. The road turns into a borderland, where gender roles can be renegotiated.

With mountains like the Austrian Alps; wine hills like those in Tuscany; and coastal towns reminiscent of the Croatian Adriatic, Slovenia has it all. A trip to Slovenia unites many landscapes which holidaymakers elsewhere would have to set off on several trips through Europe to experience. Despite its manageable size, the country is more versatile than almost any other and captivates with lush green landscapes, crystalclear rivers and mountain lakes, rugged mountains and idyllic coastal towns. We start our round trip through Slovenia, a country no bigger than Hessen, in the middle of TRIGLAV National Park. KRANJSKA GORA serves as an ideal starting point for a rich tour in the mountains, where in the evening traditional restaurants invite you to discover Slovenian cuisine. Well-marked trails lead up to the border triangle,
from where we enjoy a 360° panorama over Slovenia, Italy, and Austria, or to the 1,600-metre high VRŠIČ pass. A refreshment at the JASNA RESORT CAFÉ is a must on the way back. Not only for the view over JASNA LAKE towards the mountains, but we simply cannot miss the homemade cakes.

Soca-Tal EMERALD GREEN RIVER We continue our voyage, this time by car. More than 50 hairpin turns take us through the VRŠIČ PASS . We arrive in the SOČA VALLEY , along the eponymous emerald green river, which guides us along our southbound journey.
Leaving the Soča valley, we head for the Go riška Brda wine region and suddenly find ourselve s in a landscape that more than deserves the title »Slovenian Tuscany«. There are vineyards as far as the eye can see, interrupted only by small vil lages and a multitude of cherry trees. SISTER-MAG.COM

With its characteristic colour, the river is considered one of the most beautiful in Europe – and rightly so! Every few kilometres we are tempted to stop and capture the beauty of the water. At VELIKA KORITA SOČE we stop to explore the 15-meter canyon through which the water meanders. A few photo stops later, we park our car near the NAPOLEON BRIDGE IN KOBARID to embark on an hour-long hike to SLAP KOZJAK .

In the last few days we return to TRIGLAV NATIONAL PARK . At the very touristy LAKE BLED we can't help but take a short walk to the notorious lookout across the lake for a picture-perfect snap. Of course we jump into the surreal blue water to cool down.

When travelling this way, you abstain from flying as much as possible. After all, the airplane is considered by far the means of transport the most damaging to the environment. The hash tag »Flugsham« aka »flying shame«, which propagates travelling without flying, also plays a part here.
Instead, slow travellers use buses, trams, vans, bicycles or running shoes to start their journey, which has one advantage over flying right away: you already see a lot on the way. True to the motto »THE JOURNEY IS THE REWARD« , the journey to your destination is already an adventure: whether you hike, travel by train, by bike or are doing a road trip with your camper, you can make as many stops along the way as you like. If you cannot do without using a plane, you should at least take a direct flight because the takeoff and landing emit the highest quantities of CO2. Reaching your destination, you would rather relax than to fan out: mindfulness instead of likes on Instagram, reflecting instead of taking pictures for others, taking a time-out from your everyday life instead of taking it with you. Quality instead of quantity! Slow Travel does not literally mean travelling slowly, but consciously taking it all in. Meeting natives, buying local products and enjoying yourself. Having left the sleepy village of Kochkor at dawn, we follow a solid paved road, admiring the sun rising over distant snowy peaks.

We take a right turn onto a dirt road that leads to KALMAKASHUU PASS and SONG KOL LAKE - meaning “last lake” in Kyrgyz. The name seems pretty accurate - the country’s second largest lake lies at 3016 meters, can only be accessed through mountain passes and seems like it really is at the end of the world. SONG KOL is a pictureperfect image of nomadic life: a turquoise lake, shepherds on horseback, green pasture SISTER-MAG.COM
dotted with yurts, bare snowcapped mountains and herds of cattle, horses and yaks. The drive around the lake is quite challenging, with numerous bumps, sharp rocks and river crossings. We leave the lake from the south, stopping to admire the dramatic mountain views from MOLDO-ASHUU PASS . The rugged, winding road takes us back down as the green steppe slowly gives way to wild meadows and arid rocks.

Crossing high mountains, traversing several passes and descending into steep gorges along the way, this road has a reputation of one of the most thrilling d r ive s i n Kyrg yz st a n .
It’s usually only accessible between June and September, making the dust-blown village of KAZARMAN one of the most isolated places in the country. The town is often completely cut off during winter months when the roads are closed by snowfall. In summer, however, this route offers a matchless mountain scenery, starting with a succession of verdant valleys, leading up to an ascent to the 3500-metre KARAKOO PASS . The steep climb over twisting turns is rewarded with truly outstanding views: softly
moulded mountains stretch endlessly in gradual shades of yellow, red, purple and blue. From KAZARMAN , it seems like we’re driving in a sea of an infinite grassy steppe, occasionally passing yurts and shepherds herding sheep on virescent slopes of black lava mountains. We pass green velvet-covered dunes, lush valleys, leafy forests and finally reach the searing hot FERGANA VALLEY and the city of OSH - the oldest city in KYRGYZSTAN , once an important market hub along the SILK ROAD .

The digestive system is fundamental to our body and has an immense influence on our physical, mental and spiritual health. It is for good reason that the stomach is also called our second brain or abdominal brain. It, too, has millions of nerve cells. A multitude of well-known idioms like "I felt that in my stomach" show what happens to us when our digestion does not work and how far-reaching the effects can be. The upper SISTER-MAG.COM

On the other, it could be due to the bitterness of the leaves from which the extract is extracted. The artichoke is a masterly medicinal plant when it comes to boosting our digestive system and protecting the liver. The plant belongs to the thistle family and was scrawled on the walls of Egyptian pharaoh tombs. In the 16th century they were used as a remedy against jaundice and as an aphrodisiac. Artichokes are cultivated mainly in the south of France, central Italy and in moderate-mild regions of the

Liquorice root Glycyrrhiza glabra
The juice of the liquorice root is used to produce what is more commonly known as liquorice. Unfortunately, nowadays flour is often simply mixed with anise and then called liquorice. The dried roots of liquorice, which belong to the legume genus, have a healing effect on gastritis and stomach ulcers and help with heartburn. Liquorice most likely has its roots in southwest Asia; records prove that it was cultivated from the beginning of the 16th century until the 1950s in the Bamberg area. The plant supposedly belonged to the equipment of Roman soldiers. Chewing was supposed to suppress thirst and hunger. In the Middle Ages the root was prepared as tea or cooked in wine and used to remedy SISTER-MAG.COM

urinary and kidney ailments. Liquorice is of great importance in modern naturopathy. It contains glycyrrhizin which has an anti-inflammatory effect. Other substances have an antispasmodic and expectorant effect. A tea made of liquorice, peppermint and lemon balm helps against a variety of digestive complications. Socalled medical liquorice is eaten to provide relief for alcoholinduced headaches and stomach issues. Liquorice should not be eaten during pregnancy as it stimulates the function of the adrenal cortex and increases the release of cortisol. One should consult a doctor for heart and kidney problems, as liquorice stimulates urine production.
A bouquet garni is a wonderful way to bring some Mediterranean flair to the table and dishes, as well as to do something good for the body. You'll need stems of rosemary, thyme and lavender and leaves of sage and laurel. The bouquet seasons soups and stews. Since it is tied together, it can be easily removed after cooking. Fresh or dried, it also looks lovely as a decoration. Recommended for a bouquet garni: • 2-3 stems thyme • 1 stalk rosemary • 1 stalk lavender • 2 sage leaves • 1 bay leaf
Tie the stems together with a ribbon or kitchen thread. Make plenty of it in the summer, dry it, and then keep it airtight in a container. Alternatively, bind and use fresh bouquets.

I n g r e d i e n t s for 4 servings: 220 g buckwheat flour 1 egg 1 pinch of salt 500 ml water
DIGESTION
oil for frying 2 bulbs fennel salt, pepper olive oil juice of a lemon 200 g feta 4 eggs oil for frying
Galette with Fennel, Feta & Egg 1. For the galette dough, place the flour in a bowl. Form a small hollow, add the salt and the egg and mix with a fork. Gradually add the water and mix to a smooth dough. Let stand for 1 hour.
3. Fry the eggs in a pan with a little oil. Set aside.
4. Add some oil to the pan for the galettes. Take a ladle of dough and put it in the pan. Fry on both sides.
2. Wash, dry and finely chop the fennel. Use the fennel green as it is particularly aromatic. Mix with a little salt and let stand for 20 minutes. Then mix olive oil and lemon juice and add to the fennel. Season with pepper. SISTER-MAG.COM

In addition to bitter substances, dandelion also contains substances to remedy skin allergies, excesses and impurities.

Also known as yellow ginger, turmeric has been of great importance in traditional Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine for thousands of years. The small root is now receiving increasing attention and its healing powers are used in numerous ailments. For example, turmeric as an anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and even painkiller that can help with rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Turmeric acts as a blood thinner, improves blood circulation, protects against heart disease, helps in the treatment of depression and promotes digestion. Its distinctive curcuma-yellow colour is also used for food colouring. One should be careful when using turmeric as it has a tendency to stain the skin and

clothing. Turmeric is hardly soluble in water and is difficult to absorb in the intestine, so it is a good idea to add some black pepper. You can also combine it with fat, like an oil, to aid its absorption by the body.
Marigold Calendula officinalis Marigold is a very old medicinal plant native to southern Europe and the Mediterranean region. It was probably already used by the Egyptians and important enough to serve as a burial gift in pharaonic tombs. Marigold was likely also used as a medicinal plant in ancient Greece. Ancient writings mention a plant called Klymenon, which is described in similar terms as a marigold.

It was used to treat injuries and burns. In ancient Rome, a plant called Caltha flaventia lumina, which likens to marigold, was used to treat injuries. Hildegard von Bingen used marigold under the name Ringula internally to fight digestive disorders and poisoning and externally in an ointment against eczema. Marigold is mainly used externally, as an ointment, because of its ability to speed up the healing of wounds. Moist compresses of boiled marigold can provide relief for sprains, poorly healing wounds as well as fresh wounds, and inflammatory forms of acne. The effect of marigold has also been medically proven to be effective against cuts, bruises and burns, as well as inflammation of the mucous membranes. Internally, an infusion of flowers cleanses the blood and relieves menstrual symptoms.

It is recommended to use si licone moulds for continuous pro duction. They are very practical, ea sy to clean and allow for the safe removal of soap pieces. I n g r e d i e n t s 500 g goat's milk raw soap 4 tbsp marigold oil 20 drops orange oil 4 tbsp coriander seed 50 g dried marigold blossoms
Marigold massage bar Marigold oil can be easily produced on your own. For this, add 80 g of dried marigold flowers (dried by yourself or bought) to 100 ml jojoba oil and leave in a glass for 2 weeks in a sunny place. A small glass weight will ensure that the flowers do not come to the surface. Shake daily. After 2 weeks, pour everything through a sieve. The oil can be used for a maximum of 1 year. The faster you use it, the better. The oil is very suitable for healing; beeswax can be used to make a healing balm for small wounds.
1. Melt the soap base in a water bath. Do not heat above 72 degrees Celsius, otherwise the soap base will turn yellow and dehydrate. Then stir in the oils and coriander seed.

The start into the new year was icy. Since November temperatures of around -20 °C had been creating ice landscapes in the Wadden Sea and the Baltic Sea was also partly frozen. In March, 49 citizens from the GDR seized the unique opportunity and flee – across the ice – to the West, to Schleswig-Holstein. In April, the winter was still in full swing with MASSIVE SNOWFALLS especially south of the Danube. The record winter, which
held a firm grip on the whole European continent, would end up becoming Germany’s coldest of the century. Interestingly, North America, Japan, and parts of China also experienced unusually cold temperatures, meanwhile the winter in Alaska and other northern regions was comparatively mild.

January, ISHIHARA SHINOBU , a Japanese doctor, died at the age of 83. Originally a surgeon, he specialised in ophthalmology; a wise decision as it turned out. As a senior doctor at a Tokyo military hospital, he set out to develop a method for testing the colour vision of recruits. The ethically debatable circumstances (the job was to identify »perfect« recruits for an elite unit) nevertheless produced

something rather valuable: the so-called ISHIHARA COLOUR PLATES are still used worldwide today to diagnose red-green visual impairment in humans. Creating them, Ishihara drew inspiration from JOHANN WOLFGANG VON GOETHE ’s theory about colours – and impressionist and pointillist paintings he saw during a sojourn in Europe.

Initially, some are put off by the fact that it worked with live bacteria (today’s injection vaccinations no longer
use them). Hence, the campaign required additional political support which, driven by Bavarian politicians, eventually succeeded in turning the public mood. There was momentum, too, after the number of infections in the FEDERAL REPUBLIC had been relatively high in previous years. Despite rapid improvements thanks to the new vaccination, Europe was officially declared polio-free by the WHO only in 2002.

art market On a day in late June, things went haywire in the world’s »most dignified and traditional auction house« SOTHEBY & CO. on New Bond Street, London. The occasion: An auction like there have been only few so far. After his death, an incredible art collection had been discovered in the house of oil millionaire WILLIAM A. CARGILL in Scotland, including numerous works by French Impressionists. Nobody had been aware of Cargill acquiring this treasure thanks to early and clever SISTER-MAG.COM
purchases. Now, Sotheby’s is in a state of turmoil. In the course of 54 »tumultuous« minutes, a hopeful American buyer, among others, tried to acquire a Renoir by telephone from California, but without success. Meanwhile, potential buyers on the spot were screaming their offers towards the auctioneers, trying to drown each other out. (The quotes were taken from a report in the German magazine »DER SPIEGEL« from 19 June 1963.)

His visit and his speech, regarded by many as one of his best, were meant to assure WEST BERLINERS of his solidarity and support – a rather important sign for the inhabitants of this enclave of the West enclosed by the GDR , in a time when the Cold War was already real. the year of memorable speeches: Only few months after President Kennedy in West Berlin, MARTIN LUTHER KING organised the »March on Washington for Freedom and Jobs« and delivered a speech that would gain proverbial status as well: »I HAVE A DREAM« . The American pastor and civil rights activist was the figurehead of a movement advocating full equality for African Americans. While President Kennedy advocated respective legislation, having announced a new civil rights law in June, racism and segregation effectively still shaped daily life in many places. SISTER-MAG.COM

The other focal points of promotional activity were: Food, household goods, body care products, and perfume. Obviously, the Federal Republic was enjoying its economic miracle to the full ! Meanwhile in the US Cap’n Crunch solved the important issue of cereals getting soggy in milk (»Stays crunchy, even in milk!«). Considering the triumph of Cocoa Puffs (»I’m coo-coo for Cocoa Puffs!«) and Fruit Loops (Toucan Sam became the new mascot), it seemed like the country was truly experiencing a breakfast revolution .
Everything else became suddenly unimportant when PRESIDENT KENNEDY was shot dead by an assassin in DALLAS, TEXAS , on 22 NOVEMBER . News of the crime, which happened during a drive through the city and live in front of the cameras, spread at lightning speed. In New York, the BBC correspondent at the United Nations, Peter Watson, was trying to get a plane ticket to Dallas. A few days later, Watson summarised his memories of that day in a report that reflected the gloomy, tense mood and state of shock paralysing the USA and most of the rest of the world.

In common with many Pop Artists, LICHTENSTEIN was reacting against the emotional involvement of ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM and was instead turning to popular, consumer culture - fastfood packaging, comic-strips, advertisements - for inspiration. would paint his works on a monumental scale, much enlarged from his original source material of comic-strip illustrations. ‘IN THE CAR’ is based on a cartoon featured in the September 1961 issue of the magazine GIRLS’ ROMANCES . Lichtenstein removed the thought-bubble text that had appeared above the scene in the original cartoon. I was unfamiliar with ROY LICHTENSTEIN’S »IN THE CAR« before it was introduced as the centrepiece of the current sisterMAG issue. But I knew the subjects all the same: the couple in motion were Don and Betty Draper, the protagonists of HBO’s hit show MAD MEN .
This is chronologically impossible, of course, as Lichtenstein’s painting debuted more than four decades before the first episode of MAD MEN aired. (The source scene of »IN THE CAR« was illustrated by TONY ABRUZZO in the September 1961 issue of the GIRLS' ROMANCES comic anthology; Lichtenstein’s pop art adaptation came in 1963 ). Still, in studying the Drapers’s melancholic relationship we can glean from Lichtenstein’s work the moods and mores of marriage in the ’60s.

is set in New York City in the 1960s, a period in which the ways of doing things made way for ways in which they could be done. But while winds of change swept through the streets and speakeasies and the advertising agencies of Sixth Avenue, the air in the suburban household remained stagnant. In the early ’60s, men spent increasingly more time out of the house, unmarried women started to open doors, and for wives at home the walls were closing in. Many of these women were »MAD MEN«

defined only in relation to the men in their lives and suffered from a profound lack of identity as their husbands hit the town – and Pan Am runways – looking for fun. In their confinement they also they saw how women not duty-bound to domestic responsibilities were finding their own footing outside the home. As any Instagram addict will tell you, adriftness and envy are a dangerous mix. Married women became devastatingly bored with their domestic lives, and husbands became irredeemably unsatisfied with

their domestic wives. It is no wonder adultery tears through every marriage in Mad Men, which remarkably captures the social, cultural and political flux of American life in the postwar era.

This is the story I see when I observe the couple in the car. The gentleman smirks with all the leverage in the world over a woman not naive but nevertheless powerless. Love is so far gone that sadness and rage no longer register for her. There are no other avenues to explore. What else can she do in light of her husband’s unrepentant infidelity but be a passenger in the charade?

Well, there is one thing: find the next economic stepping stone. (In MAD MEN , Betty has an affair with Henry Francis, a high-ranking government official whom she marries after divorcing Don). It’s a pretty depressing situation, really: rove from one patron to the next in everlasting pursuit of the Joneses or smile your way through misery. The woman in the car languishes in the ennui of being stuck in between. A similar powerlessness plagues TRUDY CAMPBELL , whose cheating husband, Peter, works with Don. Alison Brie, the actress who plays Trudy, speaks SISTER-MAG.COM
about her character’s struggle: »Like most women at that time, Trudy is able to turn a blind eye to anything she finds off-putting for as long as she is able«, she said in a 2013 interview with The Guardian. »Trudy had always been concerned with what others think, so she's able to project a state of sunniness in public, even if things at home aren't perfect.« Other notable Lichtenstein works from the period hint at the plight of a ’60s housewife. In »M-MAYBE« , from 1965, we see an uneasy woman ponder the whereabouts of her man. »M– Maybe he became ill and couldn’t

In the original work, the 88th issue of the comic Secret Hearts, we see that the woman is replying to who is presumably her husband on the other end of the telephone. »I’m sorry, Nancy, but I’ll have to break up our date! I have an important business appointment. I’ll see you tomorrow night!« he says. It’s not difficult to read between the lines.

Text: MARTINA KLARIC Relationships are always shaped by many emotions – as shown in Lichtenstein’s painting »IN THE CAR« (1963). The images capture a scene of a romantic conversation as well as a tense argument. It can easily be said that couples frequently experience an emotional jumble while in a relationship. If a separation is imminent, the situation sharpens. There is an entire institution dedicated to how people experience sadness, anger and hope: THE MUSEUM OF BROKEN RELATIONSHIPS is one of the most interesting museums full of experiences. Situated in the old town of Croatia’s picturesque capital, Zagreb, the museum, founded by OLINKA VIŠTICA and DRAŽEN GRUBIŠIĆ , is dedicated to the collection and conservation of emotions.

Museums are usually boring – or at least this seems to be what the majority of people are thinking as the declining numbers of visitors at long-established houses of art suggest. Art, it is said, is the educational property of the elites and inaccessible to the masses. But not at the MUSEUM OF BROKEN RELATIONSHIPS ! In Zagreb, visitors can experience brightly lit miniature mazes and learn that art can be found in everyday life and that, when it comes to issues such as love, it has the capability to unfold collective powers that effect every single one of us.

The founders Olinka Vištica & Dražen Grubišić.
Everything began in 2006 with a cuddly toy bunny that artists and founders OLINKA VIŠTICA and DRAŽEN GRUBIŠIĆ chose to be the first exhibit of their museum. The »HONEY BUNNY« is both a symbol of their relationship and their separation. The couple made the little bunny the foundation of their exhibitions. It embodies a traumatising question: where do all the well-known items from a relationship go that remind us of happy times as much as a sad ending? VIŠTICA’S and GRUBIŠIĆ’S answer: to a museum
and an autonomous new home that cathartically honours the past connections of love. The idea of an overarching anatomy of love takes its course. From then on, their exhibitions have been dedicated to collecting those material relics and keepsakes and thus telling the world about the background stories of many relationships. They want to supply a public space with global presence that connects people in their joint experience of feeling love and heartache.

While VIŠTICA and GRUBIŠIĆ began by asking friends for objects, the collection independently grew with every exhibition. The curators used their travels for sourcing and were almost crushed by sent objects after publically asking for exhibits. Broken hearts seem to exist in steady supply. What began as a touring exhibition soon turned into a permanent museum in ZAGREB in 2011. Over

the course of the next 12 years, special exhibitions were held in Berlin, Melbourne, Singapore and Mexico City. Until a giant archive was believed to represent the cultural workings of love with its objects. »The collection today counts more than 2800 objects,« say VIŠTICA and GRUBIŠIĆ , »and it is growing [...] daily since everyone can donate by filling out a contribution form on our website and sending the object to our ZAGREB address.« Thus, whoever has a broken heart and is in possession of an object that keeps

bringing up painful memories and obstructing the path to healing can send said object to the museum along with an anecdotal short story as a short explanation. This furthers the democratic process since everyone and every object can become a part of a collective »GLOBAL EMOTIONAL HISTORY« . What a wonderful thought!

And those who would like to know what kind of objects are being archived and displayed at the Museum of Broken Relationships can stroll through a thoughtfully composed exhibition of around 90 intimate objects and their even more intimate stories.
The topics that these objects bring up are rather varied: most of the time, it is about the love of a partner – but there are also exhibits dedicated to past friendships, complicated family histories and crazy relationships to something like food. Talking about crazy, some of the craziest relics at the museum include: an axe that tells the story of a vow of fidelity broken because of another love and the resulting chopping of the ex-lovers furniture; a plastic statue of the Virgin Mary that a playboy left his lovers as a sign that he apparently prayed for new love and finally – and disgustingly – a piece of dried skin from a wound. The person responsible kept it for 27 years after a (harmless) motorbike accident set off traumatic fear of loss.

The current pieces at the exhibition in ZAGREB are just as spectacular: there is an aphrodisiac tea that was supposed to be an elixir of seduction and turned out to have narcotic properties (and just like that, the relationship was put to sleep, too) next to a pair of pink rubber gloves that are a symbol of slavelike household chores. After the wedding, the in-laws that lived in the same house turned out to be a constant source of suppression and control that fought against independent and free living.

The move away from this imprisonment and the donation of the gloves to the museum are a symbolic act of liberation. Those whose curiosity has been tickled can check out more exhibits in the virtual space of the museum. On their webpage, VIŠTICA and GRUBIŠIĆ have created a global art project by curating a selection of objects the stories of which anyone can CLICK through. As you can see, the focal point of the museum lies with authentic relics and meaningful narration. »The ones that touch you the most,«

the artists say, »are often those of the people who personally entrusted you with a part of their lives.« To create closeness in a world defined by anonymity is their mission; stimulating empathy and emotions are the essential driving power of their project. »Every person«, the curators hope, »will come across something familiar, something surprising, something that will bring out a smile, a tear or prompt contemplation.«

The Museum of Broken Relationships furthers a collective healing process that every person experiences differently and promotes the fascination of »the most sacred and most coveted part of human experience, which is love« . It is not hard to see that a visit to the museum is an intense experience that releases great emotional chaos. The visitors are not only forced to confront the relic-like objects and empathise with the people behind them – a connective power is released that shows how similar all humans are when it comes to love and loss. What countries are you both from? I am from Germany and my husband from the United States. How did you get to know each other? What’s your love story? We met like many others while he was stationed with the U.S. Army in Germany and I was going to University in Wßrzburg. One night he was my customer at the restaurant that I worked at. We enjoyed talking and spending time with each other and the rest as you say is history. When did you know that it is the real thing? Are you already married? Do you have kids? I think we knew it was the real thing when I flew with him back to the States because his grandmother had passed away. A few months after that he went on a 6-month peace keeping mission in Kosovo and after that we knew for sure that we wanted to spend our life together. We SISTER-MAG.COM

have been married for 16 ½ years and have two kids, 12 and almost 10. How was the wedding – combining the two cultures? Our wedding was amazing. We got married in my hometown and had the church ceremony in German and English. We used the tradition of the father walking the bride down the aisle and bridesmaids and groomsmen. Besides those aspects it was a pretty traditional German wedding and I think everybody enjoyed it. What were the main discussion points about child raising? Our first main discussion point was language. We decided that I would only speak German to the kids while he’ll speak English. Because of that and our goal to go to Germany at least every other year if not every year they do a fabulous job at speaking German. It makes it easier that my husband speaks and understands German as well. Our differences in child raising are not so much based on culture as they are on the different ways we were raised. 175
How did you decide in which country you want to live? At the time we didn’t really have a choice. My husband is still in the military and they just tell you where to go. We are getting to the point where after almost 16 years in the US we have to decide if this is where we want to stay or if we want to move back to Germany. Was it always a dream of yours to permanently live in this specific country? I spend a year in the US as an exchange student and after that I always wanted to live in the US. However, having lived here for so long now and knowing the difference between the two countries, I would rather live in Germany. How well did you know the culture? As I mentioned before I had already spend a year in the US so I had an idea of what I was getting into but it is a very big country and we have lived in 4 different states and the culture differs from south to north and east to west. How easy or hard was it for you to build your professional career in the new country? I was studying to be a teacher in Germany, and we moved 1 year before student teaching. When I enrolled at University here, I had to start from scratch. My classes I had already completed only counted as electives. That was very frustrating. Due to our lifestyle and our choice for me to stay home with the kids until they start school, I am just now starting to work as a teacher. SISTER-MAG.COM

This was very exhausting, and we knew quite soon that we want to have our residential basis in Sweden. For him, the step from Skåne to Berlin would have been a very big one. My theatre job made it easy to get along with new places. That’s why we chose Sweden.

Your relationship came to an end after more than a decade. Can you give us an insight whether, and if so, how your different cultures played a role? The reasons for the end of our relationship are complex but the cultural background surely played a role. At the beginning, we weren’t really aware of the classical challenges of a cross-cultural relationship, especially because the cultural differences between countries like Sweden and Germany didn’t seem so big. The one who moves to the

home country of the other one inevitably widens his/her reference framework and develops a totally new consciousness for differences and similarities. I was the one who moved abroad, we only spoke Swedish with each other, which made it much easier for me to put the way my partner communicated into a social and cultural context. But it wasn’t always that easy the other way around. The move to Sweden was also accompanied by a shift in the power balance of our relationship. At first, I felt very dependent because I couldn’t do easy things like an online bank transfer or needed help with the Swedish authorities. Little by little, I learned all that and regained my independence but in all these years, a little imbalance remained. Especially if one of the partners moves into the country of the other one, it’s important for a viable relationship that the binational couple finds a new common cultural identity in which the roots of both of them have enough space. We didn’t manage to do that but I wouldn’t miss the time in Sweden.

ABOUT YOU
Has it always been a dream of yours to live in Sweden permanently? I have always been drawn to the North. As a child and a teenager, I combed the whole house library for Scandinavian authors – from Astrid Lindgren, Selma Lagerlöf to Martin Andersen Nexø, from Stig Dagerman to Olav H. Hauge to Tomas Tranströmer. The Nordic vastness, the sparseness, the untamed nature shaped my inner landscape; this is where I feel at home. Did you speak the language before you moved into the country? Yes, I already spoke Swedish before I moved to Skåne. In 2007/2008, I worked for a theatre in Lofoten in Norway. The official work language there was English but nobody really stuck to it because Scandinavian people speak in their respective mother tongue to each other. After a few weeks, I got a feeling for the languages and communicated in a mix of Norwegian, Danish and Swedish. The latter then developed into a broad Skånska with lots of diphthongs. This is the dialect that is spoken here in the South of Sweden.

How well did you know the culture? Before we met, I already had professional and private contact with Scandinavia every now and then. That’s why many things were familiar and I didn’t see the country through the eyes of a tourist. However, I experienced the classic stages of culture shock like every expat does: the big euphoria and curiosity at the beginning, later frustration and isolation, the reorientation and the phase of assimilation. By now, I feel both German and Swedish.

did you adapt to your second home country? The change of perspective has made me more relaxed, I have become more lenient, both to me and to others. Sustainability is even more important in my everyday life. I consume much more consciously, I buy almost exclusively second-hand, I do not fly and spend a lot of time in and with nature. The self-chosen loneliness is something that I have come to appreciate very much here. I like being alone with myself and need time in silence for my creative work. If I did not move to Erfurt in the fall and therefore had a lot on my mind, I would be hiking in the Sarek National Park in Lapland this summer,
alone. Now I have at least enough time for a few days in Switzerland in a small lonely alpine hut, where I have already been staying during the last two summers. I also take home a new surname from Sweden. Thanks to the legislation here, I was able to drop my old surname and have been officially named SolvĂĽng since last year, a name nobody else wears except me. I return to Germany with a more open, alert view and look forward to a fresh start. Maybe I'll put down roots in Erfurt, maybe I'll move to the North again someday. The inner compass should be realigned regularly anyways, so you know if your direction is still right.

Soon, diverse publishing houses invented their own superheroes: Between 1939 and 1941 , the stories about BATMAN , AQUAMAN , GREEN LANTERN , GREEN ARROW and CAPTAIN AMERICA came into being. It was at a delicate time, when the world really needed superheroes. America’s entry into the Second World War in 1941 worked like a catalyst for such comic stories. The private turned political: Thus, superheroes fought against new ideological enemies, representing a super-patriotic ideology (e.g. Captain America). Superheroes were a genuinely American phenomenon, who embodied national values like freedom, independence and democracy in their battle

The origins of such a hero worship date back to ancient times: Superhero narratives show many parallels to myths of the earliest religions. Ancient heroes such as HERCULES , ACHILLES or ODYSSEUS fought with superhuman powers three thousand years ago, while transgressing political, social, and cultural boundaries. Some of today’s comicsuperheroes refer
directly to such mythical worlds such as Marvel’s Thor. Whereas the narrative form has changed from ancient times to present day, cultural studies research has shown, that all hero stories share an archetypical basic structure, which is temporally and culturally independent. Thus, cultural anthropologist Joseph Campbell has discovered universal narrative patterns in his famous study THE HERO WITH

(1949), which can be found in all mythologies around the world. The fundamental structure is based on a hero’s journey, which can be found also in stories about JESUS ,

Silver bracelets on her wrists can repel bullets. Yet, WONDER WOMAN can also be defeated by male power: She loses her powers, when a man ties her up in chains. Another weakness: Her iconographic

representation is reminiscent of pin-up-girls in the colours of the national flag: A golden tiara, red bustier, blue underpants and knee-high red leather boots make her the object of a decidedly male, pleasurable gaze. Wonder Woman thus represents a pop cultural ambivalence: liberal-feminist icon on the one hand and sex object on the other.

This development was further triggered by public protests against comic books, which were considered by critics to foster moral decay amongst adolescents with their depictions of sex, crime and violence. Thus, the Comics Code of 1954 came into being; a list of rules, which prescribed which content could be shown. Emancipation was thus a topic of the past for WONDER WOMAN . While she was still elected president in 1943 , she worked as model or babysitter during the 1950s . It was only until the 1960s and 1970s , that SECOND WAVE FEMINISM rediscovered WONDER WOMAN as feminist icon. Thus, the well-known feminist GLORIA STEINEM depicted Wonder Woman on her first cover of ÂťMS. MAGAZINEÂŤ . From the 1970s onwards,

They only had a minor part in the story of their male counterparts, while mostly just helping their male equivalents. Main point of critique: When it comes to physical strength, female superheroes (except for Wonder Woman) were mostly inferior to their male counterparts. Their superpowers transported stereotypical gender roles. Whereas male superpowers were predominantly of a physical nature, female superheroes often used passive, psychic powers, which worked rather indirectly or remained invisible such as shapeshifting (MYSTIQUE ), weather control (STORM ), absorption of thoughts and memories (ROGUE ) or telepathy/

They had already found their way into our lives in 1963, the year of origin of the pop art painting, and are trending now more than ever, especially as interior paint colours. But let's continue with the primary colours: yellow and blue work excellently in interior design. Yellow reminds us of the sun and of life itself. It is a warm, vibrant and fresh colour, which can make a room appear bright and inviting. Blue on the other hand creates a refreshing and maritime look. Nude adds a feeling of harmony and tranquillity.

Yellow isn't just yellow & blue isn't just blue. Different nuances make these colours appear different all the time and can therefore make a room look completely different too. Interior designers distinguish between warm and cool colours. Cooler nuances contain less yellow while warmer shades are made up of more than 50 per cent of yellow. Azure, cornflower, blue jeans as well as navy blue, ink blue, sky and cobalt blue are part of the cooler shades
of blue. Arctic, aqua, turquoise, cyan and ocean blue are some of their warm counterparts. You are thinking of a holiday right now, aren't you? The cooler shades of yellow, by the way, are lemon, lime, pale and canary yellow. For warmer nuances you can choose tuscan sun, honey, spice, corn and mustard. But enough about the basics, let's take a look at the hacks.

We are annoyed by big decorative beads which look beautiful but canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be eaten because you're afraid they'll break your teeth. That's why we put big chocolate balls in our sprinkle mixes â&#x20AC;&#x201C; soft and tender, which taste like Smarties. These are not wasted add-ons that you'll push to the edge of your plate. In general, we only offer the highest quality sprinkles; mostly made in Germany or Europe, nothing imported from China or America, and everything without azo dyes. And then they are hand-mixed by us in Hamburg. We concoct every mix ourselves, try out which sprinkles work with which pearls, with which colours, test combinations, and then mix the results together on a grand scale. So there is a lot of manual work and diligence behind our craft :)

course lots of confetti. In addition to the mixes, we have also recently added edible paper to our shop. At the moment this is only available in the mermaid mix, but in the near future there will be lots of edible paper for other themes. They're already a big favourite! WHAT CAN YOUR SUPER BOXES BE USED FOR?
Our Super Boxes are full of everything your sprinkle heart desires. They are usually connected to a theme, like Summer Soiree. Our Flamingos box mixes in cheerful summery colours, while the Big Love box incorporates lots of pink, red, and white, all individually sorted and with many delicious chocolate balls. We are two daughters of confectioners who grew up in our parents' confectionery. So when we were kids and teenagers, we were already making chocolate Santa Clauses, truffles and cakes. Since day one our dad has provided the filling for our cake pops (Sachertorte or Baumkuchen). He has been a confectioner for almost 50 years while our mom is the organizer. They both support us endlessly with sprinkles of advice. Fortunately, we can really benefit from their experience. We have been in the baking scene since we were children and know what we are talking about. Overall, we SISTER-MAG.COM
are a team of eight or nine people who make the baking world a little more beautiful every day. WHAT DOES A WORKING DAY USUA LLY LOOK LIK E FOR YOU?
First thing in the morning, we check mails and Instagrams, then catch up on orders and ship them. When the packages are packed and ready for shipment, mixes are mixed according to our recipes, filled into containers, and labelled. Repeat. We now have two shops, one for guter kuchen and one for Super Streusel. Fortunately, they are only two houses apart. We're currently working

from our office at the sprinkle headquarters, where the colourful setting encourages creativity :) We need and have a lot of it so that we can always come up with new things in order to be able to continually offer our customers something unique. We don't have a normal working day; somehow there are always a thousand things to be done, which forces us to reinvent ourselves and develop new concepts and ideas. And that's just how we like it! We have a great following on our social media channels, i.e. Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest. Our sprinkles are colourful and multifaceted, and we do a great job of showing that. We do a lot of our own photoshoots to show all the things you can do with Super Streusel. There is never a shortage of new ideas for all the sprinkle-crazy ladies out there. Referral marketing also plays a big role for us. The most effective advertising is when you have bakers and their friends raving enthusiastically about our sprinkles. This also validates what we do. YOUR INSTAGR AM CHANNEL IS FULL OF COLOUR. A FEAST FOR THE EYES. IS INSTAGR AM AN IMPORTANT CHANNEL FOR YOU? HOW D O YO U RU N I T, A ND W H O DOES?
Yes, definitely. We've been able to build such a great baking community around Super Streusel in the last eight months. We get so much feedback, encouragement, and

heartfelt connections. We have already met some of the girls we write with on Instagram in real life; at the baking fairs, for example. Or they visit us in the shop, which is great. We manage the account ourselves. Replying to customers and fans, giving tips, and providing useful information is really fun! WHAT ARE YOUR PL ANS FOR THE NEXT FIVE YEARS?
Our long-term mission is to make the baking world more colourful. We mean it! We want to see that no one is decorating with boring sprinkles anymore. We want to grow our baking community further and create a big, beautiful, super-sprinkle, multicoloured family out of it. We are already working on new product ideas, have two incredibly exciting projects on the horizon, and can confidently say that everything to do with baking will be even more glittery in five years than it is now.
