SITKA CENTER FOR ART AND ECOLOGY

Inspiring Creativity Through Nature For 44 years, Sitka’s programs have aimed to foster a nurturing place where people come to connect with nature, the arts, one another and themselves. Whether it’s being enveloped in serenity, gazing at ocean views or admiring towering spruce, Sitka is a place to find comfort, peace and inspiration. Within that experience exists an opportunity to deepen and apply your creative skills. As a non-profit we are empowered as stewards to ensure this treasure is protected with you and future generations in mind. 2013 was a milestone year at Sitka. Fueled by a challenge from the late John Gray, we completed an endowment campaign, which resulted in $2.5 million in invested funds. The board and staff also engaged in a strategic planning process that helped to solidify our goals for upcoming years. Our highest priorities, related to our programs, are to complete the replacement of the Tree House and Bunk House, expand our outreach to the local community and focus on spreading the word about our workshops and residencies. Within our organization, the staff remained steady and new board member, Christy Wyckoff, joined Sitka. Sarah Greene and Pat Thompson retired from the board at the end of the year. We hope you enjoy perusing the following pages with news about our workshops, residencies, events, finances and the people who make Sitka an incredible place. We’re grateful to everyone who has given in some way to Sitka through donations, memberships and volunteering. Together, we make Sitka a place where creativity is nourished and nature is woven into every aspect of our lives. —The Sitka Center Board and Staff

Our Residency Program (October through May) provides artists, writers, musicians

and natural science scholars the opportunity to conduct their work while deeply engaging with the environment of Cascade Head. Up to six residents at a time (about 20 per year), from different disciplines and stages in their careers, live and work on campus for up to three and a half months, free of charge. Two special residencies take place annually in the fall and spring. The Jordan Schnitzer Printmaking Residency allows for two artists, without a printmaking background, to be paired with master printmaker Julia D’Amario for two weeks each during which they create etchings and expand their artistic repertoire. The Recorder Residency takes place in the spring for six weeks and supports a professional recorder player. Residents perform community outreach during their stay, offering free exhibits and lectures on campus, presentations to area schools or community groups and other projects. The residency time is often a life-changing experience for the participants. In 2013, twenty-two individuals participated in the Residency Program.

RESIDENCY HIGHLIGHTS Ray Troll and Kirk Johnson gave a presentation of their collaborative work to more than nearly 200 attendees. The event was so popular that Surftides Hotel hosted it. Troll, a visual artist, and Johnson, a paleontologist and Director of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History, completed a second book together while at Sitka. Their books are: Cruisin’ the Fossil Highway and, still in production, Cruisin’ the Eternal Coastline. David Armstrong was the recipient of a Sitka residency as the winner of the 2012 Doug Fir Fiction Award, presented by Bear Deluxe magazine. Sitka paid a total of $23,750 in stipends to residents through grants from The Ford Family Foundation’s Golden Spot program and the National Endowment for the Arts, and with funds provided through the Jordan Schnitzer Printmaking Residency program.

IN THE RESIDENTS’ WORDS... “I looked forward to the seclusion and time to myself to contemplate my work, but I did not expect the depth to which this seclusion and distance from my ‘real life’ would affect me emotionally, causing me to question my motives and aesthetics to such a deep level.” –April Marie Hale, visual artist “Sitka is such a magical place and is as conducive to artistic growth as it is to the growth of its incredible trees. The flora, fauna and people are seeping their way into a new body of work I am making.” –Dana Lynn Lewis, Jordan Schnitzer Printmaking Residency artist “I take away from my time at Sitka a greater appreciation for creative community and talking across media. It was so amazing to hear visual artists speaking about their work because they address different concerns and think about their projects in ways that writers either take for granted or rarely address. No matter where I end up or where my career takes me, my time at Sitka has prompted me to be a more active part in creating a supportive community for people pursuing all kinds of art.” –David Armstrong, writer 2013 ANNUAL REPORT

Our Workshop Program (May through October) provides people of all levels the

transformative and joyful experience of making art and exploring their connections to nature. We offer more than 100 one- to five-day workshops on drawing, painting, music, nature, woodworking, sculpture, fiber arts, kayaking, metal work, photography, printmaking and writing. Professional artists, writers, musicians and ecology experts guide the instruction in one of the Center’s five studios or outdoors in the natural environment of Cascade Head and the Salmon River estuary. The annual workshop catalog is available in print and online in the month of February.

WHERE DO WORKSHOP STUDENTS LIVE?

WORKSHOP HIGHLIGHTS Nine hundred students took workshops. Enrollment has held strong the past few years. Workshops were taught by 64 returning instructors and 27 new instructors. Of the 108 workshops offered, 37 were full. Sitka paid instructors a total of $69,657. In its third year, our High School Art Scholarship Program expanded outreach to 13 students placing them in a Sitka workshop of their choice, free of charge. Sitka supported the growth of two young adults in our summer internship program. PAGE 6

FROM THE WORKSHOP PARTCIPANTS... “The setting is so beautiful and peace-filled. It’s a journey into art just to come here.” –Marian Gerard, “Italic Handwriting”

“I feel like I have broken through the barriers that have held me back for years. I am excited about the future of my writing.” –Maureen Zwicker, “The Art of Re-Vision: Where Catharsis Meets Craft”

“Hearing others read their writing sparks new ideas for mine. Sitka = Inspiration.” –Joan Severson, “Come to Your Senses”

“It was so much fun to be here at Sitka, away from home, relaxing and letting that creative side of me pop front and center!” –Kathy Case, “Ephemeral Vessels - Provocative Objects”

“Being here is always transformative in unexpected ways.” –Anonymous Student, “The Written Fragment and the Rough Sketch”

“A breath of fresh air on the Oregon coast. Pristine wilderness jutting out to Cascade Head. Elk grazing and grottos of old growth timber where my imagination wanders. I often feel the animal spirits gather amongst these trees conversing into the night. Inspiration can be fickle and derivative but not here at the Center. Just being on the grounds, I feel like “making.” So teaching here for the first time last year, I knew that this was a place to return to. A place to support. A place to share with others. I am looking forward to teaching woodcarving here again this summer and assisting others in finding their own unique artistic vision.” –Stan Peterson, woodcarving instructor

ART INVITATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS The 20th Annual Sitka Art Invitational, held in Portland at the World Forestry Center on November 1-3, bustled with 2,000 art enthusiasts and 492 pieces of artwork exhibited by 121 Northwest artists. The event spread the word about Sitka’s mission and built awareness of our workshop and residency programs. Proceeds of sales were split 50/50 with the artists in support of our Residency Program. In all, 96 art buyers purchased 139 pieces of artwork. As a result, $36,316 was paid in artist commissions and Sitka’s net income was $35,345. In 2013, we introduced Art Happy Hour on Friday to complement Party with the Artists. This was the first opportunity visitors had to view the artwork and 26% of the Invitational’s total sales occurred during the 3 hour event. We also added artist talks in which one artist each half hour discussed his/her work at the show. The event was made possible with the enthusiastic support of more than 150 volunteers, exhibit committee, and the entire board and staff.

“As an Oregon based artist, I have been formally participating in the regional and national art scene since the 60’s while maintaining a persistent studio practice. I look forward to the Invitational because it is the only show of its caliber that includes a large body of Northwest professional artists. The Sitka Art Invitational makes a great contribution to the Oregon art scene!” –Judy Vogland, Sitka instructor and Art Invitational artist

ADDITIONAL EVENT HIGHLIGHTS Nearly 137 people attended the four, free Resident Show & Tell events held at Sitka during the Residency Program. The event, held at the beginning and end of each residency period, allows residents to share about their work and to connect with each other as well as the community. Our four, free Mingle and Muse events drew more than 200 viewers. The summer lecture series featured visiting artists and ecologists. At these events viewers experienced the life and work of an accomplished expert and explored the Sitka Center grounds. In 2013, we collaborated with the Lan Su Chinese Garden to engage Garden visitors in an art exhibit called Art in the Garden. From July through September, six artists (two each month) showed their work in the Garden. Artists received the unique experience of after-hours access to the Garden enabling them to make work specifically in response to the location. Sitka and Lan Su worked together to promote the event and exchanged reciprocal benefits to boost participation in both organization’s programs.
