OUR STORY
Welcome to Sitka
A Place to Nurture Your Creative Spirit
Taking a workshop at Sitka is different from taking one in the city. Each person’s experience here is unique, but one common thread runs throughout—a sense of place. At Sitka, the coastal rainforest reaches to the sky and oversized trees unfold revealing a soft understory with more shades of green than the eye can conceive. With a backdrop of Cascade Head, the Pacific Ocean and the Salmon River Estuary, the air is fresh and the environment beckons you to explore. Inevitably, this dynamic landscape creates an interior spark, awakening ideas and encouraging reflection.

Come here to elevate your skills or try something completely new. You’ll benefit from the encouragement of expert instructors, curious classmates and helpful staff. Workshops range in length from one to four days and are designed for a variety of skill levels. Choose from over one hundred workshops in a wide variety of disciplines such as writing, painting, printmaking, metalsmithing, clay, and many more. We hope you enjoy perusing this workshop catalog as much as we do. We love to take workshops here, too! Circle your favorite classes, turn down the page corners and find the workshops that speak to your creative spirit. If you have questions, we’re here to answer them at (541) 994-5485 or email info@sitkacenter.org. We look forward to seeing you at Sitka!

OUR STORY
About the Sitka Center Sitka’s coastal rainforest environment is an ideal place for creative learning and inquiry. After 45 years, we are proud of our continued legacy connecting art, nature and humanity. The Sitka Center is located on Oregon’s central coast between Lincoln City and Neskowin, on the flank of Cascade Head beside the magnificent Salmon River Estuary (page 5). Summertime brings about 1000 students to our Workshop Program for nearly 100 workshops, each lasting one to four days in length. Students of all ages come to Sitka for in-depth workshops in visual art, writing, ecology and music designed for a variety of skill levels (pages 10-35). For a first-time experience, consider trying one of the monthly Sitka Art Circle workshops. New this year, Sitka introduces a Youth Week of workshops in early August for budding artists aged 12 to 17. Autumn transforms the campus from a bustling hive of workshops to a quieter, contemplative period during our Residency Program. From October to mid-May, selected artists, writers, ecologists and musicians stay for up to 31/2 months, with housing and studio space provided free of charge while they dive deeply into their work. Free public events at Sitka offer opportunities to glimpse into the creative processes of our talented instructors, residents and local community members (pages 6-7). Mingle and Muse programs combine enlightening presentations with fun gatherings, while the Resident Show & Tell events introduce Sitka’s artists-inresidence and their work to the community. Every November, the Sitka Art Invitational takes us to Portland for a week that includes special workshops (page 7, 35), presentations and an artist party that kick off the exhibit and sale. Here you will find 450+ pieces of nature-inspired artwork by 140 Northwest artists invited to participate in the show. If you have experienced the learning and art-making that happens at Sitka, this celebration and appreciation of finished artwork brings it all full circle. We invite you to be part of a community of people who value the connections between art and nature. It’s the people who make Sitka shine. To learn more, visit us on the web at www.sitkacenter.org.

Paper provides the perfect medium for storytelling. Once control of the knife is mastered in papercutting, the artist’s own unique style emerges. “Taking away” from the paper as opposed to “adding to” the paper often creates happy surprises. Formal drawing skills are not required.

This workshop’s prompts and discussions will help ignite your imagination, clarify your vision, manage obstacles and realize dreams. Writers and seekers at all levels are welcome.
