INTRODUCTION
Your Blanket, Your Way
Blankets are one of the most beloved and popular projects to knit. They can be made to any size, are great for cuddling up in, and, when taken care of properly, can become beloved heirlooms for generations. A handknit blanket is a labor of love that everyone can use and enjoy. Knitters love to put their own personal touches in the projects they make, whether by adapting a portion of the pattern or choosing alternate color combinations. It is those thoughtful details that make a project extra special to the knitter and the recipient. With that in mind, 60 Quick Knit Blanket Squares empowers knitters to design their own one-of-a-kind blankets, choosing every detail along the way.
GAUGE
COLORS
BORDERS
All squares in this book were based on a standard Stockinette stitch gauge of 20 stitches and 28 rows to 4"/10cm, using a size 7 (4.5mm) needle. We suggest that you swatch in Stockinette first to determine the needle size to use to achieve this gauge. The gauge of the specific pattern stitch is stated if it differs from the standard gauge.
Choose two favorite colors to make a checkerboard. Create a diagonal gradient. Divide the blanket into color-blocked sections. Insert pops of color in a field of neutrals. Play with as many or as few colors as you wish.
A border can give your blanket that extra something it might lack. Knit all borders in the round in one piece, or work each edge separately. Pick from garter stitch, seed stitch, or an I-cord edging. Use a single color, a gradient, or insert an accent color. Several examples of borders are provided throughout this book. Before deciding on a border, you may want to test a few of them on your gauge swatch to determine which border might look best.
SIZE With every pattern yielding a uniform 12"/30.5cm square, you can easily plan out square or rectangular baby blankets, lapghans, and throws of any size.
YARN QUANTITIES Each blanket square pattern requires no more than one 3½oz/100g (220yd/200m) skein of 220 Superwash Merino from Cascade Yarns. The approximate number of ounces/grams and yards/meters used to make the square is listed in each pattern. This way, you can effectively plan how many skeins to purchase. For example, if a pattern requires 2½oz/70g, you will only need 3 skeins to make 4 squares of that pattern. Note These amounts do not include the yarn required for swatching.
PATTERNS Choose from 60 different patterns that include knit and purl textures, cables, lace, combinations, and unique stitches. Ranging in skill level, technique, and aesthetic, these patterns offer endless combinations.
LAYOUT Create a layout that complements the patterns you choose. Consider how each square plays off those next to it. Something as simple as changing the orientation of a square can have a huge visual effect. With each square knit separately, you can tweak the layout up until the very last minute to get the perfect result.
SAMPLE BLANKETS Seven finished blankets have been included throughout this book to show examples of just a few of the different sizes, color selections, pattern combinations, layouts, and borders you may choose. You may want to re-create any of these sample blankets, or they may encourage you to think in different ways and try something you might not have done before. n

Substituting Yarns
Every pattern in this book was designed and knit with Cascade Yarns 220 Superwash Merino. We recommend that you use 220 Superwash Merino when working from this book, but if you wish to use a different yarn you will need to account for possible changes in gauge, knitted measurements, needle size, the number of stitches cast on, and how many rows to work. The swatches pictured here were each knit using the same pattern and include the same number of stitches and rows, but each used a different weight of yarn. As you can see, using different weights of yarn will result in very different finished measurements.

NOT ALL YARNS KNIT THE SAME We chose 220 Superwash Merino for the patterns in this book because it is made with soft merino wool, is available in dozens of colors, and can be machine washed and dried. 220 Superwash Merino will showcase the stitch patterns, block to precise measurements, and offer both softness and resilience so your blankets can be enjoyed for years to come. Wool is soil-resistant, flame-retardant, and has a bounce that helps projects hold their shape. Other materials, such as acrylic and cotton, behave differently, making it difficult to reproduce the squares. Acrylic and synthetics do not have the bounce of wool, are difficult to block, and may not maintain their shape well. Cotton tends to be heavy, is difficult to keep clean, and is prone to losing its shape.
MAKING LARGER SQUARES WITH A HEAVIER YARN If you want to scale up and knit a larger and heavier blanket, Cascade Yarns offers two heavier-weight merino wool yarns. Machine washable and dryable, 220 Superwash Aran and 128 Superwash would work well for the patterns in this book. 220 Superwash Aran, typically worked on a size 8 or 9 (5 or 5.5mm) needle, is an Aran-weight 100% superwash merino wool yarn. It will produce a slightly larger and thicker blanket than 220 Superwash Merino, but it will be just as soft because it is also made with soft merino wool. 128 Superwash is a chunky-gauge 100% superwash merino wool yarn. Again, it is made with merino wool, which gives it a buttery, soft hand. Because the yarn is much heavier in gauge, it will produce a very warm blanket. We recommend using a size 10 (6mm) needle. A blanket knit with this will be substantially larger. If using a heavier-weight yarn, you will need to make some adjustments. Not only will you need a larger needle size, but you will also need more yarn. Heavier-weight yarn has less yardage for the same weight, and you will need more yardage because the project will be larger. If you knit the patterns as originally printed, the gauge will change and the squares will be larger than 12"/30.5cm. Maintaining the original 12"/30.5cm square measurements while using a different weight of yarn (and therefore a different gauge) will require making substantial changes to the pattern or may not even be possible. We suggest avoiding any potential problems by using the recommended 220 Superwash Merino unless you are either familiar with the process of substituting yarns and altering patterns or have help from a knowledgeable friend or the helpful employees at your local yarn store. n

Because you will knit these squares separately, you do not necessarily need to decide on the perfect layout right away. You can knit the squares and then lay them out in as many orientations as it takes until you figure out exactly how you want them. If you ever decide not to use a particular square, just use it in the next blanket! n
