INTRODUCTION

The granny square might be the most iconic crochet pattern around. Comprised of staggered clusters of double crochet stitches and almost always colorful, these small squares are instantly recognizable. Having been around for decades, the granny square is more often than not nostalgic for crocheters and noncrocheters alike, summoning memories of cuddly blankets and beloved family members.

While the traditional granny square is a very specific type of pattern—those staggered clusters of stitches—today the term “granny square” is often used to refer to nearly any sort of square crochet motif. A granny square can now be solid or lacy, use any kind and combination of stitches, have 3D elements, be made with a single color, and so much more, making them more engaging and fun to crochet than ever before.

While they have often been used for blankets in the past, modern crocheters now use granny squares for anything and everything. Due to their small and uniform size, granny squares make great building blocks for accessories and garments. Make some granny squares in your preferred color schemes, seam them together into the necessary shape, and then, if needed, add borders and trim for those finishing touches. Folding squares in half so they span the front and back of 3D items or adding granny triangles to fill in gaps make granny squares endlessly versatile.

This book contains insight on the possibilities of the granny square, helpful tips, and practical how-to information. All of that is in addition to 60 diverse granny square patterns and 10 projects for blankets, scarves, bags, and garments. A pattern collection and source of inspiration, these pages will ignite within you a new passion for granny squares.

If you can dream it up, you can make it with granny squares!

How to Use This Book

No two granny squares in this book are exactly alike, but they do share common traits that make them easy to use together in various projects, including those found in the back of this book.

YARN

All of the squares and projects in this book use Cascade Yarns 220 Superwash Sport, an affordable and high-quality superwash wool that is available in dozens of colors.

Each project lists the required number of skeins for each color used. The square patterns list the colors that were used to make them, not the exact amount of each color that was used. As you work, carefully monitor how much yarn of each color is used. Even if a square uses only one color, a single skein could make more than one square. A square that uses multiple colors could make several squares with a single skein of each color. If a square uses one or more colors more than others, you could change the color sequence on subsequent squares to maximize the total number of squares you can make, all while staying within the same color story.

COLOR CHOICES

Picking colors is one of the most fun parts of designing something with granny squares, and 220 Superwash Sport offers dozens of options. Many granny squares are worked with multiple colors. Think about how you want to pair your colors, which should appear more dominant, and whether or not you want to change their sequence from granny to granny. For example, the Rainbow Drop Cube

(see page 156) is made with 6 granny squares of #38 Rainbow Drop (see page 102), but the color sequence shifts from granny to granny and creates a striking effect.

For grannies that use a single color, think about whether you want every granny in the same color or whether you want to use multiple colors across the squares. You could make most squares in a few neutrals and include just a few squares in a bright color that pops. Maybe you want to combine squares into various blocks of high contrast colors. Playing with the same color in different tones is always very fun. Really, the options are limitless. All you have to do is find what excites you (or the intended recipient).

CHARTS

Every granny square pattern in this book includes at least one chart. Whenever possible, the color of the chart rounds matches the color of the yarn used in the photographed samples. In some cases, the colors have been changed to aid readability. If in doubt, refer to the written instructions to confirm which color is used each round.

Most charts use only commonly known stitches (sc, hdc, dc, sl st, etc.). A key with those commonly known stitches is found inside the back cover flap of this book. You can flip that outward and leave it open to reference

as you work. Any stitches unique to a pattern are explained in that pattern’s text, and a key for those stitch symbols is included with the chart.

CONSTRUCTION

Each square is worked in rounds from the center out. Most squares use joined rounds, but continuous rounds, turned rounds, and other unique constructions are utilized in a few instances.

A number of patterns have 3D elements. These may be created at the same time as the main square, made separately and later joined, or crocheted as part of and anchored into the main square. In each case, the pattern provides clear instruction on how to proceed, and the charts show how to work each section.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS

The 60 granny square patterns in this book all have finished measurements of 6"/15cm square. Achieving this size is important, especially if you plan to use your squares to make any of the 10 projects in the back of this book, as that is the size of square those projects require.

If your square is only slightly smaller than 6"/15cm square, you may be able to block it to the correct measurements. You may also consider working an additional round of slip stitches or single crochet to achieve

the correct measurements, if you are not opposed to how the extra round affects the overall appearance. If your square is significantly larger than 6"/15cm square, rework the square using a smaller crochet hook. If it is significantly smaller than 6"/15cm, rework the square using a larger crochet hook.

PROJECT TYPES

Perhaps the most classic project to make from granny squares is a big, comfy blanket. There’s endless potential for gorgeous blankets when you use granny squares. Given their relatively small and uniform square dimensions, you can use granny squares as building blocks for anything. The sample projects in the back of this book show just a few creative ways to use your grannies. Simple projects like blankets and scarves are fun classics, but you can also go 3-dimensional with tote bags. Take things even further by adding edgings, ribbing, and extensions,

which open up possibilities to create unique accessories (see Comfort Swirl, page 160) and even full-size garments like cardigans and pullovers (see Pointed Cardigan, page 173).

The granny squares you crochet are just the beginning. Let your imagination run wild, and you’ll be amazed by all of the things you can create with them.

PATTERN SELECTION AND SQUARE ARRANGEMENTS

One thing to consider is how many different granny square patterns you’ll use in a single project. Of course, you can make every granny square with the same pattern. Repetition is often very striking and satisfying. However, you should feel free to mix and match patterns.

Refract (see page 154) uses #1 Traditional Granny Square (see page 22) in a single color and #15 Half & Half (see page 52) to create movement in texture and color. Interstellar (see page 152) arranges 3 patterns in

projects can be just as fun to figure out.

HOW-TO INSTRUCTION

Step-by-step instruction and guidance for common techniques (and a couple of unique stitches) used in the various granny squares and project patterns can be found at the beginning of this book. Reference these materials as needed.

Small details can make the biggest difference. Here, easy stitch clusters create a faux-woven texture and an accent color adds an additional layer of visual interest.
