INTRODUCTION
Let the animal odyssey begin...
People responded so well to the animals I drew in my first book, Color Odyssey, that I decided I wanted to create a book that just featured animals. In my tattoo art, I draw a lot of big cats, snakes, birds, and koi fish (I’ve even done a lot of pet portraits which are really very sweet) but this is the first time I’ve drawn such a wide variety of creatures. And usually when I’m drawing animals they have fur, feathers, or scales—whatever that animal might have in real life. But here, for coloring, I’ve tried to make things interesting by incorporating patterns. I don’t generally do a lot of pattern work in my art, so this was an exciting exploration for me. And because I drew many kinds of animals that I don’t normally draw, I had to do a lot of research on them, their anatomy, the way they move, and their environments. It reminded me how much I loved animals when I was a kid. I had a huge encyclopedia of animals and always wanted to know more about animals and how they live. I guess it sort of sticks with your subconscious. Plus, my daughter has gotten into nature very early and she loves learning about animals. On one hand they are so much like us, but in many other ways each one is totally unique. It seems like an endless variety, and there is so much to learn. Where I live now, there aren’t a lot of animals. Living in a large city makes me appreciate nature so much more. I don’t think any artist can always explain why they’re drawn to something or why they make the art they do. But we’re animals and a part of nature, too, and so I think we have an inborn curiosity about the natural world around us. Being able to use that curiosity has made creating Animal Odyssey such a great experience. —CHRIS GARVER
