introduction Welcome back cowl girls (and cowl boys)! Because one collection of cowls could never be enough, here’s a brand new group for you to try! This time around, there are new stitches, new shapes, and new configurations. For extra fun, I’ve included a few hats and some rogue dickey shapes and collars. There’s something for every style! Having myriad design options at your fingertips allows you to both test your knitting skills and create pieces that complement you and your wardrobe. In this collection, you’ll find an exciting set of technical challenges that include: • Inserting zippers either set within a seam or on top of knitted fabric • Shifting yarn gauges within a pattern • Piecing together motifs and then picking up and knitting a decorative edge around the assembled pieces • Using multiple colors for Fair Isle, intarsia lettering, and mosaic work • Incorporating paillettes, sequins, or pony beads • Creating textured, decorative edgings and other stitchery such as drop-stitches, short rows, bobbles, ripples, and loops Adding these technical options to your toolbox will enable you to create cowls best suited to your needs. And, best of all, you’ll have the ability to express yourself artistically. Before you choose a design, make sure to consider the shape of the cowl. A collarless coat with a rounded neck would look great with a ribbed dickey inserted inside the neck, a dickey with a sequin edge on the outside, or just about any neck covering. For an even more dramatic look, consider an oversized, wrapped cowl. Coats with large collars, however, often play by different rules. They might look good with a cowl that hugs the neck or is narrower with a wrap and drape down the front. Coats with small collars can work well with just about any cowl shape, depending on how it relates to the collar structure. I hope you have fun perusing the entire collection as each design has a special feature or purpose for its creation. Choose your favorite shape, pick a design that screams your name, buy some gorgeous yarn, and get started!
