I N TR O D UCT I O N I believe that more is more. I believe color is the essence of joy. I believe that stripes and florals and leopard prints can and should be mixed. And I believe that we can do that beautifully by curating our style and our collections. Patterns can be lovingly layered. Color can be thrown about like candy. I call my style Curated Maximalism because, while I’m all for more being more, I want the “more” to be meaningful. Thus, a clean line and a white palette are a place for me to pour heartfelt layers of intentionally curated design. As an artist and painter, I’m drawn to a world that has a touch of magic. The sweet animals in my mind often come to life on paper and canvas with a nod and a wink to our human world, wearing floral crowns and feathers in their fur. They seem to pose for their portraits to be painted. Florals burst from the edges of paintings and overflow on fabrics, seemingly exploding with joy. The drawings in this book are meant for you to experiment and have fun with. I don’t adhere to a strict “color inside the lines” rule, and I hope that you won’t either—try going outside the lines, try painting the pages. Mix media and mix colors with fervor and joy. Play! There are a few pages that have the letters of the alphabet on them. I encourage you to photocopy these for your personal use, cut them, paint them, color them and use them in your projects. You’ll also find that the final four images in the book are printed on watercolor paper. Feel free to expand your creativity by experimenting with this medium on these pages. The range of designs in this book are the imaginings of my heart. My hope for you is that you will get caught up in the world I’ve created, play, be inspired and awaken your inner artist. We all have one. We just sometimes have to dig deep to find her. She’s there awaiting your adventure.
