Introduction Manga 100 contains one hundred eye-catching characters to draw.

This book features some of the most popular types in manga, many of which may already be your favorites! If you love to draw manga, you’re going to enjoy these easy lessons. As you follow along, you’ll find tips designed to help you improve your drawings.

You’ll discover the keys to drawing always-popular school characters, boy characters, fantasy types, unusual animals, sci-fi characters, and even simple backgrounds.

There is so much you can do with this book. I’ll make suggestions as we go, which you can use to customize your characters (“Make It Yours”).

You can create a character from one chapter, make a glamorous costume for it from another chapter, and finish it with a pose from yet another chapter. What you create is entirely up to you—you’re the artist. This book will give you the tools to make it happen.

Getting Started: Drawing the Head and Body To draw the face, most people begin by drawing guidelines for the eyes, nose, and mouth. But guidelines only work in relation to each other. Once you see how it’s done, you may find it much easier to draw. For example, a guideline for the eyes that is too high could look awkward. Let’s find out where they go so you can get it right every time.

Mysterious Guy

If there’s one character who is absolutely necessary in manga, it’s this guy. He’s generally troubled, or he likes to appear that way. At seventeen, he has more angst than any other character. He doesn’t even know what angst means, but he’s got a ton of it.

Draw a guideline down each character’s front or back to indicate the direction they’re facing.

Draw both faces turned to the right.

Stage the characters so the one on the left reaches the shoulder height of the one on the right.

Stormy hair and clothing make the scene look dramatic when nothing out of the ordinary is actually happening.

A gust of wind is always helpful in an emotionally charged scene.

Both characters lean back slightly.

Draw the collar turned up.

The handrail (red line) crosses both characters at the same place at the midsection. This keeps the perspective consistant.

Funny Characters Let’s have fun by placing our characters in humorous situations. Here are some pointers to remember: Conflict is funny, but harmony is not. Humor in manga is not subtle, so don’t be afraid to exaggerate. And feel free to change a pose or expression, or to even introduce a new person or magical friend.

I think it’s a little late to apologize to her. Maybe a plane flight out of town would be a better choice.

Cute & Fluffy Friends In manga as well as comic art and animation, creating a variety of characters is important. To do this, we’ll go an extra step and introduce, in manga style, some rare but exceedingly adorable animal types. Viewers like to be surprised, and these guys can do it with their odd shapes and “people parsonalities.” We’ll highlight the traits that make them noteworthy so they’ll be easy to draw.

Scenes with humans and mermaids are usually shown from the mermaid’s point of view, because it’s her environment, and the human is the outsider.

More Genres You Should Know The characters in this chapter are based on well-known genres.

Have fun trying them out and seeing which style you like best.

For example, kodomomuke features young characters in adventure stories. Another popular type are the Ultra Cute characters, which feature super-colorful outfits and cheerful personalities.

And never to be forgotten are action characters with super powers. They have amazing special effects and dynamic poses.

A suit of armor is very heavy, so the character must look powerful.

Whoops!

Humorous scenes usually have a clear direction: There’s a setup and a payoff. The golfer on the left sets things in motion, which pay off on the poor rabbit’s head, on the right. The viewer’s expectation is that once the ball goes into the hole, the game is over. But with this hole-in-one, the troubles have just begun!

The horizon line (which is also the eyeline) is drawn toward the top of the picture plane. This has the effect of pushing the characters together at the bottom of the page.

The rabbit gestures at the golf ball.

The lower leg overlaps the thigh.

Draw a few smaller figures to fill in the background.

To suggest a path on the golf course, draw two diagonal lines: one in front of the girl and one behind her.
