Before they owned their farm, my greatgrandparents were sharecroppers, which meant they would give a part of each crop as rent. My mother told my brother and me a lot of stories about them and their connection to their community. They didn’t have what some would consider a lot by today’s standards, but they went out of their way to help others. This cake is one that my mother says was a favorite of my great-grandmother and would always come to the table when there were special visitors or holidays. I added layers, but traditionally this is a one-layer cake.
