It’s a Wrap!

About Cascade Yarns® Heritage From its beginning in 1987, Cascade Yarns has retained the single focus of selling high-quality core yarns at a reasonable price. Heritage and Heritage Silk came from that focus: when an ordinary wool would have been acceptable, Cascade Yarns chose to use a merino wool, because it is softer. We are confident that you will enjoy knitting with Heritage and Heritage Silk as much as we do. For a list of available colors, or the location of your nearest retailer, visit www.cascadeyarns.com.

Knitters have a soft spot for neckwear: from that first simple scarf to the latest lacy wrap or colorwork cowl. Neck Effects brings you 30 fresh, original neckwear designs, all in Cascade Yarns’ Heritage line of superwash merino blends. From cozy cables to delicate lace to stunning Fair Isle, you’ll find projects for every skill level that will become modern classics in your wardrobe— and will make great gifts for anyone with a love of knits and a sense of style!

INTRODUCTION

Neck and Neck . . . and Neck If you’re a knitter, chances are you like to knit neckwear. Beginners start with a simple rectangular scarf or cowl, and as skills expand, large shawls and complex stitch patterns enter the picture. Neckwear often features simple construction and minimal shaping, making it the perfect canvas for a multitude of techniques—whether you’re learning something new or looking to enjoy your favorite style of knitting. And since fit isn’t an issue, neckwear is the quintessential knitted gift! In these pages you’ll find 30 unique, modern designs for scarves, cowls, and shawls, all knit in Cascade Yarns’ Heritage line: Heritage, Heritage Paints, Heritage Silk, and Heritage Silk Paints. These fingering-weight superwash merino blends are soft and easy to care for, and come in a multitude of vibrant colorways. Heritage is perfect for everything from lace to cables to colorwork—and you’ll find beautiful examples of each, suited to every skill level. Whether you’re a northerner who can’t have too many cozy winter accessories, or live in a warm climate and love lacy scarves and shawls, the designs in this book are an essential addition to your knitting library.

Ideal first project. Easy

GauGe

Basic stitches, minimal shaping, and simple finishing.

Make a test swatch at least 4"/10cm square. If the number of stitches and rows does not correspond to the gauge given, you must change the needle size. An easy rule to follow is: To get fewer stitches to the inch/cm, use a larger needle; to get more stitches to the inch/cm, use a smaller needle. Continue to try different needle sizes until you get the same number of stitches in the gauge.

Intermediate

For knitters with some experience. More intricate stitches, shaping, and finishing. Experienced

For knitters able to work patterns with complicated shaping and finishing.

* Guidelines only: The above reflect the most commonly used gauges and needle or hook sizes for specific yarn categories. ** Lace weight yarns are usually knitted or crocheted on larger needles and hooks to create lacy, openwork patterns. Accordingly, a gauge range is difficult to determine. Always follow the gauge stated in your pattern. *** Steel crochet hooks are sized differently from regular hooks—the higher the number, the smaller the hook, which is the reverse of regular hook sizing.

4. When you have completed all the short rows,

you must hide the wraps. Work to just before the wrapped stitch. Insert the right needles under the wrap and knitwise into the wrapped stitch. Knit them together.

transition, wrap a knit stitch as follows: With the yarn in back, slip the next stitch purlwise.

chain Stitch (crochet)

2. Move the yarn between the needle to the front of

the work. 1. Draw the yarn through the loop on the hook by catching it with the hook and pulling it toward you.

3. Slip the same stitch back to the left needle. Turn the work, bringing the yarn to the purl side between the needles. One stitch is wrapped.

2. One chain stitch is complete. Lightly tug on the

yarn to tighten the loop if it is very loose, or wiggle the hook to loosen the loop if it is very tight. Repeat from step 1 to make as many chain stitches as required for your pattern.

About Cascade Yarns® Heritage From its beginning in 1987, Cascade Yarns has retained the single focus of selling high-quality core yarns at a reasonable price.
