Why are shawls such perennially popular items to knit? I can’t speak for all knitters, but I can tell you why I love shawls. A shawl is the ultimate accessory. It is both an aesthetic statement and the most practical of garments. A dramatic wrap can provide the showstopping final touch to an elegant evening gown while keeping those bare shoulders warm. And nothing is more comforting to slip on than an oversized shawl knit with thick, soft yarns. Working in an office that is not always perfectly temperature-controlled, I can really appreciate the virtues of a cozy wrap. (In fact, we even have a box labeled “Office Shawls for Chilly People”!) Shawls are accessible to all knitters, no matter their skill level or area of interest. Favorites of newer knitters who are stuck in a rut knitting scarf after scarf and want to branch out, shawls and wraps are also beloved by more advanced stitchers. Most shawls require little construction, making them accessible to beginners, but they are also the perfect canvas on which to play with color or to lose yourself in an intricate lace pattern. Most shawls (including the ones in this book) are one size fits all, so they make perfect gifts. And if
