Originally from South Lake Tahoe, Calif., she left San Diego for Coeur d’Alene in July 2006. Within a few weeks, she was introduced to Jeanette and hired as an assistant editor. There’s definitely no shortage of new restaurants cropping up all across North Idaho; from Coeur d’Alene to Post Falls, Hayden to Sandpoint, get out and explore the new flavors the area has to offer. RECENT OPENINGS DOWNTOWN The Wine Cellar Restaurant
The building at 317 Sherman Ave. has housed a number of businesses over the years, and now the Wine Cellar has moved in. Set in a location that appealed greatly to Tom and Patricia Power—owners of the landmark downtown restaurant and wine bar, The Wine Cellar, formerly located just two doors down—along with some other advantages the space held, they purchased the building earlier this year to relocate The Wine Cellar and move it street side. In the new location as of July 2012, The Wine Cellar Restaurant and Wine Bar boasts additional floor space with a larger area for groups, banquets and private dining. Along with the additional space comes a liquor license, so in addition to the impressive wine list, you can now enjoy classic hand mixed cocktails as well. Scrud’s Gourmet Grub
Open since summer 2011, Scrud’s is known for its giant burgers and sweet and spicy wings. If you’re brave enough, try the “Dig Your Own Grave" Wing Challenge. Studio 107 Wine Bar
Studio 107 has moved locations! Now located in the former Barrel Room No. 6 space next to Scratch Restaurant on Sherman Avenue, Studio 107 continues to feature wines from all over the world, with daily tastings by the glass and flight. The still offers that intimate ambiance featuring art, glasswork, gifts, chocolate and wine baskets, and custom-designed jewelry by Trish Williams. TOWN Kelly's Irish Pub
It may not be new to the midtown street scene, but the owners are! Meg Sullivan and Ed O'Brien are the new owners of Kelly's Irish Pub. Along with the new owners comes a new and improved menu. It may be Irish, but Kelly’s features more than just corned beef platters. The kitchen now delivers an outstanding Guinness Stew, fantastic mussels in a Guinness cream sauce, the lightest beer-battered fish and chips anywhere around, excellent Shepherds Pie, and melt-in-your-mouth beignets and scones. Breakfast is now offered weekends with a great selection of omelets and pancakes. After eight years of hearing others complain that there was no bagel shop in Coeur d’Alene—and complaining themselves—Brent and Laura Little decided to do something about it—New York Bagel Enjoy New Yorkstyle bagels with a variety of spreads, along with bagel and deli sandwiches, espresso, smoothies, soups, salads and fountain drinks; something for everyone. Paris Flea Market
Paris Flea Market has moved up Fourth Street and doubled its size. Owners Jeff and Tracy Gagnon have the same great vendors and more. Now you can find not only great antiques and collectible but you can have a coffee, latte or espresso at the same time. Faithful Chocolates
For those of you who were sad to see Spokandy close its doors as the Ironwood Shopping Center, you will be happy to know that you can still satisfy your sweet tooth with Faithful Chocolates. Opened May 2012, owner Nadine Sharpe offers a variety of hand pre-packed candies. Select from caramels and nut chews to soft center truffles, as well as almond bark and a variety of fudge flavors. And yes, you can still get much of the sinful Spokandy chocolates there to indulge yourself as well. For the faithful, there is a selection of scripture apparel items including hats, T-shirts in kids and adult sizes, ties for him, baby items and more. Tricksters Brewing Company
There’s a new brewing company in town— Tricksters Brewing! Matt Morrow is not only the owner but is the head brewer as well. Matt comes with six years of experience brewing and four years at SKA Brewing Company in Durango, Colo. His own craft beers include Cougar Bay Blonde™, an English Summer Ale (light ale), Bear Trap Brown™, an English Brown Ale, Coyote Morning IPA™, a very nice American India Pale Ale, as well as some seasonal ales. Coeur d’Alene Cellars has moved its tasting room—formerly located in Downtown Coeur d’Alene—to the winery. The beautiful chic wine bar can be found inside the winery and features the wines produced exclusively by Coeur d’Alene Cellars Winery along with microbrews and light fare. Meltz Extreme Grilled Cheese
Across from Fedora on Kathleen is where you will find the “big cheese”—Meltz Grilled Cheese. Joe McCarthy and Matt Yetter opened what is sure to become an area favorite. Few things say comfort food to Americans like grilled cheese sandwiches. At Meltz, they’ve kicked up the flavor a few notches with their own special spin on a classic. The extreme side comes from making it a meal within a sandwich with no fewer than six different components of starches and proteins between those grilled pieces of bread. Two favorites to try are the Border Patrol that is a combination of Pepper Jack and Colby Jack cheeses with jalapeño bacon, buttermilk-fried onions, roasted garlic and Ranch dressing. The Idahoan is white cheddar and Colby cheeses atop a bed of meatloaf, roasted garlic smashed red potatoes, and ketchup-chile glaze. This lunch spot is open from 11am to 4pm Monday through Saturday. Demitri Kermelis opened Lounge Fly in Post Fall March 2012 in the former Pub 41 location. Demitri is from a family of chefs, restauranteurs and hoteliers. His Swedish great grandfather (on his mom's side) is famous in Sweden and Europe for two Swedish cookbooks and known in many restaurants by name. Demitri himself is a graduate of the French Culinary Institute located in the Soho area of New York. His marriage to his wife, a native of St. Maries, Idaho, area is what brought him to Idaho. Lounge Fly is in many ways a combination of the efforts of husband and wife. They both liked the comfy sofas and chairs found in so many of New York's establishments. Upon entering the establishment, you’re greeted by a cozy fireplace setting appropriate for a ski resort lodge. Add a Peppermint Schnapps Hot Cocoa refreshment to the mix and you’ll feel right at home! But, following a prompt greeting from the hostess, a right or left turn will easily land you in a setting fit for a whole new flavor. Turn left, and you’ll find a lively barroom. This room begs a classy but casual vibe, with a U-shaped bar, live music and unique garage door, opened wide to coax in the warm summer breeze. Wait. You’re looking for a more intimate experience? “For this dish, we use very clean duck meat,” Scott says. “Add Hispanic seasoning for the flare, and top it with signature tomatillo gravy. Now there’s a meal!” Scott is sure to add this unique culinary approach to breakfast items, too. “We’ve recently started serving brunch, and I must admit, I can’t even do a standard omelet. Between my own seasoned eggs and roasted tomatoes, the food always has an original spin.” Even if you’re more of a mainstream eater—classic grilled cheese, BLT’s or club sandwiches—you won’t be disappointed. The food’s always fun, friendly and could be with a delicious twist. “Ultimately, I hope people take away how friendly and approachable in both food and price point we are; it’s about great quality for the value. top. Don’t panic. You should know by now not to believe everything you hear, especially in any small town; The Wine Cellar is still here. It hasn’t closed, and won’t be closing. This Downtown Coeur d’Alene landmark is better and stronger than it’s ever been, and it’s here to stay—just two doors down—due to the love and passion of its new owners, Tom and Patricia Power and their Wine Cellar staff. The initial plan wasn’t to own their own restaurant—they were just looking for an investment. But “it was kind of a packaged deal,” says Tom, as the building and the business were for sale. In the beginning, the couple was a bit hesitant, as The Wine Cellar was already a well-known, well-liked—or should we say loved— establishment with a loyal clientele. Tom and Patricia knew this first hand, as they had been regulars to the iconic downtown restaurant for nearly 14 years. They have seen it grow, stumble and falter at times. They’ve enjoyed The Wine Cellar at its best and have questioned it during its struggles.

When it comes to the “new” Wine Cellar, “I think there has been a lot of apprehension, but I think there’s a lot of excitement as well,” Tom says. “My hope is that people understand everything in life has to change; we can’t keep doing the same thing over and over. The whole restaurant scene and the flavor of what people are looking for when they go out at night has changed. And what we’re doing is keeping the core values of The Wine Cellar but bringing in some changes. We tried to respect as much as we could of the core values so that the local people still feel at home.” At The Wine Cellar, the experience is no less than ideal. The European feel, great Mediterranean cuisine, live music, phenomenal staff, and the cozy and inviting atmosphere, along with your own good company … this is how a meal was meant to be enjoyed. RIVERSTONE Coeur d’Alene’s New Gathering Place A transformation of what was once a saw mill and gravel pit along the Spokane River has created a whole new neighborhood that brings small-town charm to yet another area of Coeur d'Alene. At the intersection of I-90 and Northwest Boulevard in Coeur d'Alene, the Inland Northwest's newest town within a town, with its hillside views and a vibrant sidewalk community, has quickly become a bustling gathering place. Cast along the shores of the Spokane River exiting Lake Coeur d’Alene among the stones and pine trees that long ago painted this picturesque Rocky Mountain scene in the backdrop; Riverstone is the destination in the very heart of change that is shaping the new North Idaho lifestyle. The river really does run through it and, so do the people who enjoy running, walking and biking the North Idaho Centennial Trail that runs through it, too. Just a short walk from downtown to the north is a little neighborhood along Third and Fourth streets called midtown. This corridor is filled with interesting shops, a wide variety of dining options and just pure charm. A recent beautification project has made the neighborhood more walk-able and bike-able, and free parking is plentiful. One of the biggest commercial success stories in recent years is of a young man who figured out a way for each of us to connect with our friends online and grow our personal community. We all know about Facebook, and most North Idaho residents have heard of Pilgrim’s Market. Why? Because, like Facebook, they are connecting people. But, unlike Facebook, Pilgrim’s connects people face to face in the real world, with real food and health. Five years ago, Pilgrim’s Market owner, Joe Hamilton, became inspired by the book Stirring It Up: How to Make Money and Save the World, by Gary Hirshberg, CE-YO of Stonyfield Farm Yogurt. It was then that Joe decided to stop spending money on traditional advertising and direct that money into initiatives to educate, empower and connect his customers, staff and the greater health-conscious community in Coeur d’Alene.
Today, Pilgrim’s Health Education Center and demonstration kitchen are abuzz with seminars, cooking classes, film screenings and meetings. Many are coordinated by Pilgrim’s but others are hosted by a variety of local non-profits. Pilgrim’s has not only embedded itself into the fabric of the community, but it has also become a place where you can connect with and expand your personal community. Being greeted by name in the aisles of Pilgrim’s Market by friends and helpful staff is a regular part of this experience. Steak Rub 2 Painted Hills Grass-Fed thick-cut steaks 1 clove garlic, minced 1 tsp fresh thyme 1 Tb olive oil salt and pepper to taste

MIDTOWN FAVORITES Since opening, Syringa Japanese Café and Sushi Bar has developed a loyal clientele, due largely in part to their dedicated staff. Owners Viljo and Autumn Basso have been working in restaurants together since 1995. Viljo attended Portland's Western Culinary Institute, and after an internship at Rover’s-a well-known French cuisine-inspired restaurant in Seattle-he became a fulltime chef there. Autumn also worked in restaurants in the Seattle area and attended Seattle's Art Institute where she studied fashion design. While still in Seattle, Viljo added to his credentials at Cascadia Restaurant and Mashiko Japanese Restaurant and Sushi Bar. He was later asked to help open and be the head kitchen chef at Saito's Japanese Café and Sushi Bar, a traditional Japanese restaurant in Downtown Seattle. After eight years in Seattle, Viljo and Autumn married and returned to Coeur d'Alene. In 2004, Ezra "EZ~B" Basso was born, and they made the big decision to open Syringa, a Japanese café and sushi bar, naming it after the Idaho state flower. It quickly became a neighborhood hangout and awardwinning restaurant that attracted fans from throughout the Northwest. The opening of the Garnet Café would come in May 2010, occupying the small house behind Syringa with the inspired breakfast menu of a totally different sort. The unique menu includes creative breakfast items prepared with beans, pesto sauce, maple apple pecan sauce, fresh veggies, goat cheese, spaghetti, duck confit, pork fried steak, and omelets with Northwest area names and ingredients, along with expertly prepared traditional breakfast items. The Garnet also quickly garnered numerous local readers’ poll awards with their instant popularity and is a must destination among area foodies. As you enter G.W. Hunters, not only will you be greeted by a kind host or hostess, but a fish pond. Walk into the restaurant a bit further, and you’ll find more than 80 museum-quality trophy animals adorning the walls. You’ll notice scripture from the Bible posted throughout the restaurant as well, and several signs reading “Prayer may not be allowed in school, but it’s welcome at our table.” An interesting combination, but it shows owner David Swanson’s love of hunting … and God. G.W. Hunters offers great food with large portions at a fair price, and guests will find a menu smothered in comfort food items. All ingredients are always fresh, always flavorful, and the menu offers something for everybody. More than 800 men, women and children dancers take part as hundreds of tribes are represented with dancers, riders and drum groups. You love garlic,we love you! When the White House Grill first opened its doors in 1996, it was just a little white house right off I-90 in Post Falls. A small and intimate seven-table bistro, it served dishes with as much garlic as one can handle. And with owner/chef Raci Erdem at the helm, it instantly became a local restaurant gem. Raci was then and is still entertaining guests with a little conversation, a lot of joking and a little rhythm with a hand drum. He soon had people traveling from all over North Idaho and Spokane to this little white house in Post Falls, or as he would say, “to see the foreigner in the White House.” And once the secret was out, Raci enjoyed a packed house with a waiting line most days, eventually leading to moving the restaurant to a larger location, right down the street. A native of Istanbul, Turkey, Raci brought a tasty unique flavor to North Idaho with the gyros, the hummus, the grilled lamb, the crumbled feta—and yes, a lot of garlic. There’s plenty on the menu that offers many flavor sensations; there’s always something to please most any palate. Hayden and the Hayden Lake area are no exception to the growth in Kootenai County and are becoming more beautiful each passing day, with residents, both new and established, here for the rural smalltown feel. The culinary scene here is both gourmet and family friendly with vibrant restaurants and specialty shopping. Moose Creek is the new restaurant in Hayden Creek Shopping Center, where you will also find the specialty store Gourmet Way, a local specialty store. Just up the street on Government Way, you’ll find Hayden’s newly beautified main street and the charming dinner restaurant Kynrede Café, Mexican delights offered at Rancho Viejo, the long-established Sargent's and the new Copa restaurant. A bit further north on Miles Avenue sits a neighborhood favorite, The Porch Public House, next to the Hayden Lake Country Club. The world-famous Clark House is a stunningly beautiful mansion and restored elegant country inn overlooking Hayden Lake. This is the place to reserve for a truly special event. The Boathouse on Hayden Lake offers spectacular views to its dining experience. Additional eateries include Blue Plate Café, Rustler’s Roost, Rusty's and Toro Viejo. Specialty shopping includes Gourmet Way, offering one-of-a-kind kitchenware and gadgets, specialty foods and wines; and Daanen's Delicatessen with its wide array of imported foods, brews and wines. The corner of Prairie and Highway 95 is the home of the bustling Kootenai County Farmers’ Market. Hayden’s own destination for families with kids is Triple Play, with its water park, bowling lanes, go-karts, miniature golf, laser tag, bumper boats and other games. Hayden Lake hasn’t often been thought of as a happening place, but all that has changed with its revamped main street between Prairie and Hayden avenues on Government Way, which have brought a new sense of community to the neighborhood. Hayden city officials are more eagerly working with local businesses on events that will enhance their new sense of place in this growing area. Free summer concerts in the park run from July through August. Hayden is famous for its long-standing culinary event, Daanen’s Oktoberfest, held annually the last Saturday in September. This family friendly German food, music and carnival atmosphere really gets generations of entire families involved in the merriment, and the whole block gets involved with the fun; an event like no other in Kootenai County.

Combining a Love for Food and Community on the shores of Lake Pend Oreille

he Long Bridge across Lake Pend Oreille—a two-mile crossing that surrounds the viewer with spectacular vistas on every side—has long been known as Sandpoint’s “welcome mat.” Those in the know, however, will continue onto First Avenue and take a quick jog down Bridge Street to land at City Beach, where the views are even more impressive. Sitting like the real-life center spread from a travel brochure, the glittering expanse of water is ringed by the towering Cabinet Mountains on one side and the craggy peaks of the Selkirk range on the other. Tucked amid all of this splendor, right on the lakeshore, is Trinity at City Beach. Since the spring of 2009, owner Justin Dick and his staff have been treating locals and visitors alike to culinary magic in an unmatched physical setting.

“One of the main things that sets us apart is the fact that we’re located at City Beach,” Justin says. “You couldn’t have a better spot. With the kids’ beach literally at our door, we get to watch Sandpoint’s families grow up right before our eyes.” Everything about Trinity at City Beach has been designed to complement this one-of-akind location, from the classic steamboat decor of the entryway, with its gallery of black-andwhite Ross Hall photographs, to the floor-toceiling windows that offer unencumbered views of the lake and mountains. When you want to take your love affair with Lake Pend Oreille outside, the restaurant’s ample deck seating and new lounge patio beckon from their spot near the water’s edge. Behind the scenes of this dining jewel, Executive Chef Thane Jenness and Sous Chef Andrew Mills—who grew up together in a quaint New Mexico resort town and attended the same culinary school—have teamed up
to create a menu that combines flavors of the Southwest with a distinctly Northwest style. “We put a lot of emphasis on things like incorporating local ingredients and using hand-cut steaks and seafood,” Justin says. “The majority of our menu items are made from scratch, and our pan sauces are made to order.” Among the favorite items on the Trinity at City Beach menu is the popular Root Burger, which is handcrafted from seven kinds of handshredded roots, walnuts and spices, all breaded and fried and served on a fresh toasted Kaiser roll, with jalapeño mayo, pickled red onions, spinach and Gouda cheese. Trinity’s Prime Rib has become almost legendary in Sandpoint, with seasoned, slowroasted Premium Choice, Midwest corn-fed Angus prime rib au jus served with horseradish cream, sautéed seasonal vegetables and potatoes du jour. On the other end of the dining spectrum is the Sandpoint Breakfast Sandwich—featuring
scrambled eggs on an English muffin with avocado, sprouts, Fontina cheese, sliced tomato and green onion remoulade. Before making the move to City Beach three years ago, Trinity had a successful run from a small location on First Avenue. Business grew rapidly, leading Justin to pursue broader business horizons on the lakeshore. He spent the first year rebranding Trinity at City Beach through the addition of live music and a decided focus on community involvement. “Our employees have really bought into that by spending a lot of time volunteering for local non-profits and organizations,” says Justin. “In one case, our server and bartender donated their tips to raise $1,300 for a cause called 24 Hours for Hank, which raises research money to help find cures for a rare childhood disease.” Trinity at City Beach is a major sponsor of the local Team Laughing Dog 24/7 bicycling team that will compete in the Race Across America to raise funds and awareness for organizations that support families living with autism. The restaurant also hosts an annual breakfast buffet fundraiser for the Wishing Star Foundation, a group that grants wishes to children between the ages of 3 and 21 in Eastern and Central Washington and Idaho who have life-threatening illnesses. Community involvement is carried a step further during the restaurant’s annual fundraising dinner for Kinderhaven—a local organization dedicated to supporting children in crisis and giving them back their right to thrive by providing a safe, secure home in which their emotional, physical and mental well being are protected and enriched. “Kinderhaven has special meaning to me, as I devoted my college career at the University of Colorado-Denver and the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center to early childhood and adolescent development,” Justin says. “During my college tenure, I worked at Denver Children's Home, which has a long-standing history of working with Colorado's most vulnerable children and families.” As a board member of the Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce and graduate of its Leadership Sandpoint program, the owner has passed his passion for giving back to the community along to his employees. It’s not only the right thing to do, he explains, but also has a positive impact on the quality of food and service. “When our staff has skin in the game, it translates into their cooking and serving,” he says. “They understand that when we champion a cause or host a fundraiser, a big part of raising awareness for that group is directly connected with the experience the customer has while they’re here with us.” This combination of world-class atmosphere, top-drawer dining and a staff that consistently gives back to the community has resulted in fierce customer loyalty and a six-fold increase in business since the move to City Beach. “We’re known as the place where the locals go,” Justin says. “But we also have a strong reputation as a getaway destination for that perfect night on the lake or just a daytrip where you can come up, enjoy dinner in paradise and still have plenty of time to get home and back to work.”

pokane’s South Hill encompasses several different pocket neighborhoods all with a unique flavor of their own; all of them coming alive with more culinary delights with each passing year. The restaurants in these neighborhoods are destinations full of life and a variety of flavors from around the world. The Lower South Hill, near all the medical centers and doctors offices, is peppered with restaurants on the steep hillsides behind them. Lindaman’s is celebrating 29 years this year of serving Spokane with delicious gourmet to go or in house for breakfast, lunch and dinner, DOMA coffees, Caffé Corretto and luscious desserts. A little further up the hill is one of the most beautiful attractions in Spokane—Manito Park. During summertime, they open a café, and nearby Rockwood Bakery, a charming neighborhood gem serving beautiful bakery items and lunches. Up the hill, just past 29th Avenue, is the most essential not-to-miss tiny Sichuan café, Gordy’s, just behind Slick Rock Burritos. Open for lunch and dinner, serving authentic Sichuan cuisine, they have won numerous local poll awards and have the distinction of being THE spot where area restaurateurs and professional chefs go out to eat when not eating at their own restaurants. Casper Fry is serving up a delicious Southern-inspired menu with a modern twist, featuring foods from the Northwest: trout, salmon, housesmoked meats, Walla Walla sweet onions, in-house breads and Red Mule Grits.
