03 Annual Report 2022

Message from Our Chairman

After two years of social distancing and virtual events, 2022 witnessed a welcome (albeit careful) return to connecting in person again. This was most timely as we marked the 15th Anniversary of the founding of SJI International. 2022 was a momentous year filled with many notable events and accomplishments and it gives me great pleasure to reflect on the journey we have taken together and remind us all to appreciate our very special community.

15th Anniversary

We were grateful to have many members of our community - parents, students, alumni, benefactors, partners - join us for a year of commemoration as we marked our 15th Anniversary.

Senior Minister Mr Teo Chee Hean and Minister Mr Edwin Tong, both illustrious Josephians, joined us for our 15th Anniversary Dinner, a memorable night of celebration and camaraderie, with a look ahead to the next 15 years. We shared with the community our vision and plans - “Building on 15’”. We announced the launch of our first sports scholarship programme, the “SJI International-Lion City Sailors Elite Development Scholarship” where up to 12 of the best young footballers in Singapore each year would have the opportunity to continue to develop their footballing skills while immersed in the holistic learning environment of SJI International High School. We also shared with the community our plans for a new Bilingual Programme in our Elementary School commencing in 2024 and a new platform on campus to support students’ interest in tech-related activities. Perhaps the most exciting news for young parents and parents-to-be was the establishment of the new SJI International Preschool in partnership with the Sisters of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary (FMM) at the current Maris Stella Kindergarten site along Holland Road. The new SJI International Preschool will enable us to offer a customised four-year earlyyears international education programme for both local and expatriate children. The Preschool will also seek to engender an early love for learning focused on language acquisition, exploratory learning and problem-solving, all within a conducive and safe environment surrounded by extensive greenery to support outdoor activities.

Class of 2022

Our 2022 IB graduates did remarkably well despite the challenges of the pandemic. All members of the cohort graduated with the full IB Diploma, with an average point score of 39, significantly above the global average diploma score of the November 2022 session of 30.91 points. 50.5% of our students achieved 40 points or more, a result only achieved by 19.8% of students worldwide. In addition, 32 of our students achieved an incredible 44 points or more.

We congratulate the class of 2022 for their excellent results and wish them well in their post-IB pursuits. Well done!

Community First

While the COVID-19 pandemic posed many challenges to the SJI International community, our school’s 15th Anniversary was a timely reminder to appreciate our collective commitment to our Lasallian values of Community, Service, Faith, Excellence, and Respect. 2022 also marked the 170th Anniversary of Lasallian Education in Singapore; the Archbishop of Singapore Cardinal William Goh led the commemoration at a dedicated Mass at the Cathedral of the Good Shepherd. Members of the SJI International community were present at the Mass, reflecting on the efforts of the founding fathers of the Lasallian Mission in supporting the education of thousands over the years in Singapore.

SJI International continued to give back to the community in 2022. With the easing of Covid-19 health and safety protocols, SJI International students and faculty returned in earnest to our commitment of service and doing good for others. The Elementary School hosted the annual “Legs of Legend” Lapathon in May, students, staff and parents walked, ran and/ or jogged a collective distance of 2,656km between Singapore and Sri Lanka, raising an impressive $36,998.05 for the Lasallian Community Education Services (LCES) in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Despite the challenges of recent years, we remained steadfast and focused on delivering the best environment for our students, who in turn did us proud not just in attaining outstanding academic outcomes but in their continued commitment to serving the community. As always, what we had achieved in 2022 would not have been possible without the support from our donors, parents and staff. A special thank you to members of our Parent Support Groups for being such an invaluable pillar and source of support for the school as we grappled with the challenges of the pandemic years. Together, we are “Building on 15”, onto the next 15 and beyond!

About Us

Established in 2007, SJI International is a non-profit co-educational school rooted in the Lasallian Catholic tradition. It offers a holistic and internationallyfocused education to a diverse student body of over 45 nationalities. The inclusive community at SJI International welcomes students, teachers, parents, friends, and supporters of all faiths and cultural backgrounds and currently enrols over 2,000 students.

SJI International is one of just three schools in Singapore with a licence to educate both Singaporean and international students at the High School level. It was founded by a dedicated team of St. Joseph’s Institution (SJI) alumni who were inspired by their own transformative educational experiences at SJI, one of Singapore’s oldest and most esteemed schools. They sought to provide a similar life-changing education to Singaporean and expatriate children.

SJI International comprises a High School which opened in 2007 and an Elementary School which opened in 2008. Both schools are part of a group of seven Lasallian institutions in Singapore, with a rich history dating back to 1852. The school is overseen by the SJI International Board of Governors, comprised largely of SJI alumni. Dr Tony Tan, former President of the Republic of Singapore, Mr Teo Chee Hean, Senior Minister and Coordination Minister for National Security, Mr Mah Bow Tan, former cabinet minister and former politician, and Mr George Yeo sit as the school’s patrons.

The De La Salle Christian Brothers have played a significant role in the success of SJI and SJI International. The Lasallian Brotherhood embodies the tradition of St. John Baptist de La Salle, the French priest who founded this order of religious Brothers in 1680 with a mission to bring education to all, particularly “the last, the lost, and the least.” Faith, community, and service are the cornerstone values of the Lasallian tradition, which is upheld by over 3,000 Lasallian Brothers and approximately 100,000 Lasallian teachers in over 79 countries worldwide.

We also offer classes for preparation for the sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Communion.

Our school is proud to have over 45 nationalities represented in our student body. We are a school where the faith and traditions of each child are respected and celebrated.

The character education programme, underpinned by The Virtues Project™ and the school values, provide the vehicle for character development and, being nondenominational, is appropriate for all students regardless of their family’s culture, faith and traditions.

The religious education programme we offer is intended to deepen a student’s conviction in their own belief, as well as to create a deeper understanding and appreciation of people’s differences, religious and cultural, to make the world a more peaceful place.

We stimulate the inter-religious relationship by including the study of Lasallian tradition and heritage within the religious education curriculum.

SJI International School
Our ethos, values and principles have a firm foundation in the Catholic faith and the 341-year tradition of the De La Salle Brothers.

Service Learning

Service Learning is central in defining who we are and what we want our students to become. SJI International strives to nurture open-hearted and open-minded students who have a strong sense of purpose, belonging and social responsibility.

From Prep 1, students are encouraged to participate in whole school service events, which support our chosen Global Initiative Programme with our charity of choice, the Lasallian Community Education Services (LCES), in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The LCES supports the Henamulla preschool, which has 150 children and is supported by seven teachers. Our Elementary Parents Support Group (EPSG) are key supporter of our Global Initiative Programme. Working with the school staff, they bring the community together to host the annual Lapathon. The Lapathon resumed ‘in person’ in 2022 after covid-19

restrictions were lifted. Throughout the year we also celebrate, raise awareness and fundraise for other charities in Singapore and abroad.

Once children reach the upper Elementary School, they start working towards their CASS Awards. This stands for Community, Activity, Sport and Service and is used to encourage children to push themselves outside of their comfort zone and give up their time to help others both in our school community and beyond. For each badge at Bronze and Silver level, children have to carry out 3 acts of Service, such as a sponsored event or volunteer for a day. Those children who reach Gold level have to plan and carry out their own independent service project, making their own contacts with agencies and working out logistics of supplies.

SJI International School
Organisation Amount Raised Singapore Red Cross - Ukraine Crisis $1,402.90 Silver Ribbon (Singapore) $1,522.68 The Food Bank Singapore $1,924.99 Purple Community Fund (Elementary School and High School) $20,017.54 Amala Education $5,749.91 Red Cross Foundation $4,966.00 Children’s Cancer Foundation $10,237.00 Lapathon- Sri Lanka $36,998.05
Fundraising Highlights

In High School, all students are involved in regular direct service activities from Grades 7 to 12. All service projects are supervised by tutors or service leaders. As students progress through High School, they are given more opportunities to voice their perspectives and select the projects that are of their interest. However, they are encouraged to be actively engaged in each stage of service learning (investigation, preparation, action, reflection and demonstration) at all grade levels.

The Water Sanitation initiative for Grade 7 takes a slightly different approach as we partner up with the Geography department to give students a more meaningful and impactful experience. Students were able to undertake virtual tours of a village together with a community doctor acting as a guide to the whole experience. With easing of restrictions, students also

benefitted from guest speakers visits by humanitarian societies such as the Blue Dragon Children’s Foundation. Students were informed of the events encountered by victims of human trafficking and how they escaped and survived the traumatic experience with the help of Blue Dragon.

One of the bigger initiatives in 2022 was Challenge Week for Grade 11 students, which involved 14 local and international service partners raising awareness for societies such as the Singapore Council of Woman Organisation, the World Volunteers, and the Plastic Project. One initiative led by Grade 11 students in collaboration with the Plastic Project saw Grade 8 students organising a plastic collection and fundraiser campaign by recycling plastic and turning them into earrings and coasters.

Co-Curricular Activities

SJI International School

SJI International offers a myriad of activities outside of the classroom. These activities allow students to pursue their talents and passions, while learning invaluable life skills. From the rhythm of dance and music, to the grit of soccer and rock climbing; the challenge of chess to the World Scholar’s Cup, students have a range of choice, with opportunities for competition at both intraand inter-school levels.

Students in the Elementary school start CCAs from Prep 2, where they are offered a curated selection of CCAs to begin their enrichment journey. In Grades 1-6, the students are offered a vast array of CCAs from the fields of Sports, Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Academics, Environment and Sustainability, Digital Technology, Martial Arts and Robotics. Catechism classes are offered through the CCA programme. Children are able to represent the school through the ACSIS sports on offer. Our Musical enrichment opportunities have grown substantially in 2022. We have a large Elementary School Orchestra, a Choir, and both a string ensemble, and a guitar ensemble. We also offer in-school music tuition through our Instrumental Tuition Programme including guitar, drums, violin, piano, cello, flute, clarinet, trumpet, and saxophone. We also offer voice coaching.

In 2022, the High School CCA programme offered new activities such as hip-hop dancing and both direct and indirect service initiatives such as Elementary School sports coaching and Our Pens’ Perceptive. With Covid-19 safety measures easing across Singapore, students were given the chance to organise more student-led CCAs such as the Lasallian Mentoring Programme which aimed to assist and tutor primary and secondary school students who are not able to access tuition-based programmes. Music-related CCAs also received much praise for their performances during the Scholarship Awards Ceremony and SJI International House Band’s first invitational performance at the Blu Jaz Cafe. Students are constantly encouraged to explore their creativity, passion and skills to build life long interests that they may wish to pursue as part of a healthy and creative lifestyle. Each year we strive to bring in more CCAs that are relevant and contemporary for our students to choose from.

Scholarship Programme

As a Lasallian School, SJI International strives to bring education to all, especially the last, the lost and the least.

The SJI International Scholarship Programme was established to encourage academically inclined individuals, regardless of their background to access quality education so that they can reach their full potential. The programme has played an important role in allowing SJI International to become a school that is widely recognised for its outstanding academic and holistic education in Singapore.

SJI International offers merit based means tested scholarships in order to ensure that the most suitable and deserving students in Singapore and the region can benefit from an SJI International education regardless of circumstances.

These 2-year, 3-year and 6-year scholarships cover school fees, other compulsory fees and miscellaneous expenses, and may include hostel and travel expenses as well as an allowance.

Merit based means tested scholarships are financed by the SJI International Scholarships and Bursaries Fund, a registered charitable fund supported by public donations.

The school also offers merit based scholarships, based on academic performance, which include school fees only. These are funded by an annual allocation of a percentage of the High School’s operating surplus to the Scholarships and Bursaries Fund.

Annual Giving

Appeals sent to parents, alumni, friends and staff throughout the year, provide the opportunity to donate to either the Scholarships and Bursaries Fund or the Building and Development Fund.

Annual Staff Giving

The funds raised specifically via this Appeal are used to fund bursaries to support our High School students who are affected by a sudden drastic change in the family’s financial situation at home – such as the death of a parent, loss of employment, divorce, etc.
