MESSAGE FROM OUR CHAIRMAN 2015 marked SJI International’s 8th year of operation in Singapore. Since the school was established in 2007, we have been blessed to have received the strong support of the local and expatriate community for the LaSallian education and ethos that defines SJI International. On behalf of the Board of Governors and Management of SJI International, I wish to once again put on record our appreciation and gratitude to all staff, parents, donors and volunteers for your unflagging support over the years. In this Annual Report, we will present a record of all that the school has achieved in 2015, from the wonderful academic attainment of the Class of 2015 to the many character-building and community-bonding projects that the school, students, teachers and parents have been involved in, as well as the continued careful stewardship of the school’s resources by the Board and Management to ensure that SJI International is a high-performing effective and efficient not-for-profit international school of choice in Singapore. The spirit of service has never been more palpable among our students. Several new initiatives were introduced in 2015, including six environmental awareness projects for Grade 8 students. Our Grade 10 students were offered a new programme based around Service Week, with a choice of about 30 projects in Singapore and SouthEast Asia. This kind of experiential learning through active engagement in community projects underpins the holistic, values-driven education that has become a hallmark of an SJI International education.
Our parents, donors and friends continue to be extraordinarily supportive of the school’s ethos and aims, and we are immensely grateful for their generosity has fueled the school’s success. Through their gifts, they have supported the school’s assistance to charitable causes and enabled the institution to offer one of the strongest scholarship programmes among international schools in Singapore. It is our fervent hope that no student who qualifies for admission is denied an SJI International education because of family economic reasons. For this to be so, we will continue to work closely with our stakeholders and supporters each year to ensure that we have the resources to support the students’ education in SJI International. As SJI International begins preparations to celebrate our 10th Anniversary in 2017, I exhort our students and staff to build on the progress made and help inspire others in their communities as “people of integrity and people for others”. ST. JOSEPH’S INSTITUTION INTERNATIONAL
SJI International opened its High School in 2007 and its Elementary School in 2008. Together they are part of a group of seven Lasallian institutions in Singapore with a history dating back to the 1800s. The school is overseen by the SJI International Board of Governors, comprising SJI alumni, and the school’s patron is Dr. Tony Tan, President of Singapore. Saint Joseph’s Institution has been notable over the years for its capacity to develop leaders of Singapore society, including members of the current government. Underpinning the remarkable success of SJI and SJI International has been the role played by the De La Salle Christian Brothers.

The realisation of the vision of SJI International was a labour of love for a team of alumni of Saint Joseph’s Institution who, having benefitted so profoundly from their own education at SJI, one of Singapore’s oldest and most respected schools, then sought a way to offer Singaporean and expatriate children a similar life-changing experience.
Founded in 1852, the brotherhood embodies the tradition of St John Baptist de La Salle, the French priest who, in 1680, started this order of religious Brothers dedicated to bringing education to all, especially ‘the last, the lost and the least’. Its cornerstone values are faith, community and service. Today there are 4,450 Lasallian brothers and 50,000 Lasallian teachers working in 80 countries around the world.

The Five Core Principles of Lasallian Schools We are proud of our Catholic and Lasallian heritage and offer many opportunities for Catholic children to explore and deepen their faith. They may participate in weekly catechism classes, daily prayers and weekly Mass in the school chapel. We also offer classes for preparation for the sacraments of first Reconciliation and First Communion. With children from 40 nations at the school, our community includes families from diverse backgrounds. We are a school where the culture, faith and traditions of each child are respected and celebrated. The character education programme, underpinned by the Virtues Project and the SMILES Values, provides the vehicle for character development and, being non-denominational, is appropriate for all students regardless of the culture, faith and traditions of their family.
The religious education programme we offer is intended to deepen a student’s conviction in his or her own belief, as well as to create in our students a deeper understanding and appreciation of people’s differences, religious and well as cultural, in order to make the world a more peaceful place. We stimulate the inter-religious relationship by including the study of Lasallian tradition and heritage within the religious education curriculum. The School’s SMILES Values

SERVICE TO OTHERS The school strives to nurture open-hearted and open-minded students who have a strong sense of purpose, belonging and social responsibility. As part of our Co-Curricular Activities programme, all students participate in a specific Service project each year. High School students, for example, move from ‘hand-held’ service projects in Grade 7 to organising their own Service trip abroad in Grade 11. Students are empowered to design learning experiences that identify problems and then liaise with local and international communities to understand one another and work collaboratively to solve these problems. In 2015, Grade 11 and 12 students enrolled in approximately 24 service activities within Singapore. They visited a variety of organisations in Singapore, including homes for the elderly, schools for disabled children and hospital wards. Through such interactions, our students are exposed to a diverse range of people, cultures, faiths and life experiences. This creates opportunities for personal development and enriched learning, and develops our mission for students to become ‘people for others’. Many were also involved in overseas service projects, such as the school’s ongoing support of the Baan Dada Orphanage in Thailand and The Loola Community Involvement Project in Bintan.

CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES SJI International offers a myriad activities outside of the classroom. In 2015, high schools students had the choice of over 20 sporting activities, 17 music groups and 30 other activities, both in school and outside school, with some students involved in national level competitions. These CCAs allow students to pursue their talents and passions while learning invaluable life skills, developing an understanding of themselves and others, and building resilience and a desire to learn.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Prep 1 – Grade 6 By placing the children at the heart of all we do, we create a learning environment that cultivates highly engaged and joyful learners. We support every child to reach his or her potential by offering a broad holistic education and we use a range of digital technology as tools to create stimulating and transformative lessons. As a Lasallian and Catholic school we are committed to forming strong relationships with our community. It is our mission to help the children to become people of integrity and people who care for others and the world in which we live. The Virtues Project is key in promoting Gospel Values.

REACHING NEW HIGHS The Class of 2015 attained an average score of 37.83 points - a new record for the school which compares favourably with the global average score of 31 points.

42.7% of our candidates scored 40 points or more – another record for the school. Fewer than 5% of IB candidates worldwide achieved 40 points or more in 2015.
BREAKING BOUNDARIES SJI International maintains a fairly broad admissions policy. The Class of 2015 included 17 students who joined the school with a PSLE score of less than 210 points. Overall, this group managed an average IB Diploma score of 36.3 points. One student joined SJI International with a PSLE score of 188 and went on to score 40 points in the IB Diploma; another who joined with a PSLE score of 204 went on to attain 43 points. These demonstrate the outstanding value added by SJI International.

SJI International Scholarship and Bursaries Fund was registered as a Charity and related IPC Status on 20th October 2006. The objective of the fund is to award scholarships, awards and bursaries to deserving scholarship students for their education in SJI International. In an event of dissolution of this fund, the remaining fund balance and assets shall be distributed to other charities with similar objectives which are registered under the Charities Act.
