MESSAGES

A publication of gratitude for the donors and supporters of SJI International

A MESSAGE OF THANKS Welcome — our donors, supporters and friends of SJI International — to this annual report on the fundraising undertaken by the Advancement and Communications Office and more particularly, an update on the beneficiaries of that fundraising. First, let me just say, thank you! In 2016, we received gifts to the Scholarships Fund and the Building Fund amounting to $1,894,873. Although these may seem just numbers to the average person, you know that they are not. Your support means you understand just how valuable and life-transforming education is. That’s why you gave, and why we and the students we serve are full of gratitude for your generosity. You help us ensure that scholarships and bursaries are available to outstanding students from Singapore and around the world, regardless of their background. You help us keep our promise that any student who qualifies for admission is not denied a place at our school simply because they are unable to pay. You help us provide the best equipment and facilities for our students to learn, discover, develop, and become ‘people of integrity and people for others’. Your support enables us to continue providing the highest quality values-based educational experience for our students, and the opportunities it opens for them and their families.

futures may hold. I hope that you enjoy reading their stories in this issue of Humanitas and that they inspire you to continue to support the work of the school. Again, thank you for all you do for our students. Truthfully, we could not do this without you. You are a part of their lives too.

As we celebrate the 10th anniversary of SJI International, we reached out to our former scholars to find out how they are faring, what they have achieved since leaving the school and what their

GIVING BACK, LOOKING FORWARD

8

A publication of gratitude for the donors and supporters of SJI International

Giving Back, Looking Forward is the theme for this year’s 10th anniversary of St Joseph’s Institution International. In the song written and composed specially for our 10th birthday celebrations, we hear the words, “I serve, I lead, I can”. Since the first day of classes on 8th January 2007, our school has been committed to accompanying young men and women in a transformational educational journey of service and leadership, with a commitment to empower them to become people of integrity who are wholeheartedly committed to lives of service. All that the school and its students have accomplished over these ten years would not have been possible without the generous support of our parents, benefactors, friends and alumni. This support has itself been a wonderful example to our students of what Giving Back is all about. In fact, many of our alumni, as well as current students, have only been able to attend SJI International because of your support. In this issue of Humanitas, some of our scholars share their stories

“All that the school and its students have accomplished over these ten years would not have been possible without the generous support of our parents, benefactors, friends and alumni.” of the difference their SJI International education is making in their lives — thanks to you and others like you, who are committed extending the mission of our school to the last, the lost, and the least. That’s “our Lasallian call”, to use words again from the 10th Anniversary Song. Looking Forward, we embrace the challenges that go along with the wonderful opportunity we have to transform our world, beginning with the lives of the students of SJI International. Thank you for partnering with us on this journey.

GROWING OUR NETWORK OF SUPPORT “Our Scholarship students are truly ambassadors of SJI International; proud representatives of SJI International around the world.” activities totalled $1,894,873; clearly showing the outstanding level of support SJI International receives.

This year sees SJI International celebrate our 10th birthday. In our first 10 years, we have developed an outstanding reputation for offering our students — including 214 Scholarship recipients — a high quality, holistic education. None of this would have been possible without the generous support from a large group of benefactors. We take this opportunity to thank our benefactors for the trust and support they continue to give to our very special school.

HUMANITAS

Our Advancement and Communications Office (ACO) continues to work to further enhance the support and communication we provide to our network of alumni, parents and friends, helping us to drive our mission as a top-tier Lasallian Catholic international school. The 2016 contributions towards the various development

10

The majority of the funds raised have gone into our Scholarship Fund, allowing us to continue to provide scholarships to students who would not otherwise be able to take advantage of the holistic education we offer here. From the outset, the SJI International community has benefitted from the influence of talented young men and women from all parts of the region who have laid the foundations of our distinctive ethos. Many of these early scholars have already graduated from prestigious institutions such as Oxford, Harvard and UBC or, closer to home, from NUS and SMU. Our Scholarship students are truly ambassadors of SJI International; proud representatives of SJI International around the world. The focus of the SJI International Scholarship Programme is on bringing in students (both local and foreign) from homes where the SJI International educational experiences would be completely unimaginable. Since the start of 2016, all contributions from donors are used only for merit-based but means-tested scholarships. Our ambitious Scholarship Programme is only possible with your support. We look forward to continuing to make a real difference to the lives of our scholarship students — only possible with your continued support.

DEVELOPING PEOPLE FOR OTHERS “We speak the language of the virtues and call upon our children to “Not just know it, choose to show it!” As a Lasallian school founded on the Core Principles of that Order, we are dedicated to building an inclusive community with concern for those less fortunate. We are guided by our school mission in all we do. In part that mission talks of “empowering our students to become people of integrity and people for others”. We begin that journey when children join us at the age of four. We have a robust Character Education Programme which is underpinned by the Virtues Project. The Virtues Project is based on the beliefs and virtues valued by diverse cultures and world religions and aims to inspire the practice of virtues in everyday life. We speak the language of the virtues and call upon our children to “Not just know it, choose to show it!” They do this is many ways on a daily basis in their positive interactions with one another and in their thoughtfulness towards our Global Initiatives. Our featured initiatives through this year were the three pre-schools in Colombo, Sri Lanka, which are supported by the Lasallian Community Education Services and sponsoring the building of a school in Kho Chroem in Cambodia. We know that education is key to future success and these two initiatives help us achieve our goal of bringing learning to those who would otherwise be deprived. We continued the school’s Plant a Tree initiative which provides parents with the opportunity

MR KEVIN HANNAH PRINCIPAL, ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

to contribute to the Senior School education of promising students from financially less privileged families, by the sponsorship or purchase of a tree, which is then planted in a special area of the Elementary School. The funds raised via this initiative contribute directly to the SJI International Scholarship Programme. We look forward to the gradual planting of a grove of trees as a tangible sign of the Elementary School’s support of the Scholarship Programme. We are striving to develop children who will become ‘people for others’ in line with our Mission statement and we look forward to continuing this work and working in partnership with the wider community.

The students assisting at the event were: James Garrity and Katie Kwong (Emcees), Rachel Fong (Usher/Scholar organisation), Isaac Tay (Scholar organisation/Stage assistance), Siobhan MacDonald (Prize presentation), Ethel Teo and Owen Burke (Registration) and Nguyen Pham Dan Anh (Usher).

The night began with an opening prayer by Brother Larry, an address by Mr Roberts and finally a speech from Guest-of-Honour and SJI International parent, Mr Simon Cheong, CEO of SC Global Developments. He then presented Scholarship scrolls to the twenty students before foreign scholar Jessa Alfajardo took the stage to share how her scholarship has made a difference to her life. Dinner was served, accompanied by music performed by SJI International’s very own talented music students and Mrs Ineke Thorpe, our Head of Music. The musicians who performed were: Haldrian Iriawan, Isaac Tan, Ledy Manurung, Lily Zorilla-Solk and Nicholas Kong. The applause was enthusiastic at the end of their set. All in all, everyone had a wonderful time celebrating with the scholars, dining on a wonderful Chinese meal and enjoying the music and companionship of the evening. current scholars, and the Scholars’ dance, also featuring Mr Bradley “Ali Brad Baa” Roberts and Ms Pamela Main, was an obvious hit.

From the moment the colourful and appropriately-attired guests arrived, they were greeted by a quartet of Arabian dancers outside the lobby. Over the staircase was a wonderful Arabian archway and guests then moved to the reception area where there were stalls big and small, an Aladdin’s Lamp to rub for a mystery prize and other items, all adding to the atmosphere.

There were a multitude of items for auction, lavishly displayed in the gorgeously bedecked auction tents which attracted generous bids, and the final sum for the evening was $455,000. We sincerely thank the SINGALA II team, Fiona Rankine, Beatrice Chen, Juliette Smythers, Melinda Ross and Simone Yeo, assisted by Ursula Ryan from the ACO and Herwin Rahmat from Asian Palette, for a sumptuous evening of fine food and great company, all in a beautiful Arabian-inspired environment.

The evening opened with mythical goddess Isis leading guests into the magnificently decorated ballroom. After a speech of welcome by the Chairperson of the SINGALA II team, Ms Fiona Rankine, guests were treated to the wonderful talents of artist Rosihan Dahim who, in a matter of minutes, conjured up an eloquent representation of the former SJI building in Bras Basah Road. This item was later auctioned — attracting the top bid of the evening. The MC for the evening was the golden-clothed Pam Oei who was picture perfect on the stage and whose energy and enthusiasm, and singing, all contributed to a joyful occasion. As the evening was held in aid of the Scholarship Fund, there were speeches by a former Scholar, Brian Theng, via video from Oxford, and Ong Ju Boon, a 2016 Scholar. All the helpers on the night were

PLANT A TREE, SUPPORT A SCHOLARSHIP

The Plant-a-Tree Campaign encourages ES parents to directly support the SJI International Scholarship Programme. Parents have the option of planting a tree, adopting a tree for a year or sponsoring a branch of a tree.

Mr & Mrs Pascal Demierre, together with their two children Juliette and Luc from the ES, supported the campaign by planting a tree in the name of their grandmother. All proceeds will be channelled towards giving deserving students from financiallydisadvantaged homes the opportunity to complete the International Baccalaureate Programme at SJI International on a scholarship. Br Larry opened the ceremony with a prayer, then ACO Director Linette Tye talked about the significance of planting — not just a tree — but the roots for a scholar’s future. Juliette and Luc then got their hands dirty helping to plant and water the pomelo fruit tree. It was a wonderful time for the family, teachers, Br Larry, Mr Hannah and the ACO team. More importantly, it was for the excellent cause of giving deserving students a helping hand, while improving the environment at the same time - a real win-win!

SCHOLARS’ REFLECTIONS The power of a thankful heart

“This scholarship has given me an opportunity of a lifetime. Through it, I am able to dream of reaching greater heights and choose the best possible path for my future. If I had not tried out for this scholarship, my life would be completely different as it is now, and I would not be as happy as I am today. This taught me the importance of taking chances. Receiving this scholarship have also made me realise that there are many with great potential, yet do not have the means or opportunities to discover or develop it. Thus, just like how this scholarship has given me a platform to nurture the best version of myself, I want to be able to aid the less fortunate in future.”

Arya Chowdhury

“Without this scholarship, I wouldn’t have been part of this vibrant community here at SJI International. Yet, this is only the beginning. Touched by the charity of countless many, I aspire to reciprocate this love in my own life; through the kindness of others I have learnt, and now, I am restless to serve.”

Juan Banchs

“My life would have been completely different if I did not take the chance to try out for the SJI International Scholarship Programme. Receiving this scholarship has opened my eyes to the wider world of not just education, but also to life. Having been exposed to different cultures of the international students, I’ve learnt many things; things that I would not have known if I had not taken a chance. It is only a matter of time before a journey ends, so I cherish every single moment in my Singapore journey. As an aspiring animator, I hope to be able to touch people’s hearts through my movies. Thank you donors, for allowing me to take my first step towards realising my dream.”

Our current scholars reflect on what the scholarship means to them, what they have learned on their journey so far, and how they plan to give back to the world and their communities in the future.

“SJI International has provided me with opportunities to develop my personality, try out new activities and meet inspiring people, all of which shaped me into the considerate and motivated individual I am today. Someday, I want to give back by supporting young individuals like myself, by sponsoring them as well as being a role model so that they can embark on a similar path that I have been offered and make the best out of it.”

Risma Remsudeen

“Words cannot accurately express how truly grateful I am, to have been given a scholarship to study at SJI International. All my teachers show a real interest in helping us reach our maximum potential, and for that I feel very blessed. Although there have been many challenges, such as the countless IAs and the Extended Essay requirements, conquering each obstacle has shown me that I am far more capable than I had thought. I’ve learnt more about myself in terms of the learning methods that I benefit most from when I’m studying, as well as the subjects that I have a keen interest in. After graduating, I hope to give back to my community by educating those who have not had the same privilege of quality education as I did.”

Simren Kaur Sambhi

“Receiving a scholarship from SJI International has empowered me to continue reaching for my dreams. I am very grateful for the opportunities and open doors that the school has given me, and I look forward to coming to school every day to learn and grow. The environment here is holistic and nurturing, and I would not be where I am today, had I not been given the blessing of embarking on this journey.”

“All my life, I’ve never been to a school where I felt a sense of belonging. However, that changed when I enrolled into SJI International, all thanks to a scholarship. For that, I am eternally grateful; for the chance to be a part of this big, loving family. Having been influenced by SJI International’s Lasallian values, the scholarship also taught me the importance of giving back one day. I have been really blessed and honoured to be an SJI International scholar, where I was able to fulfill my greatest potential and eventually go on to answer life’s greater calling, which exists in every one of us.”

Christina Wong

“Being a student from Sri Lanka, this scholarship means a lot to me. As Sri Lanka is still a developing nation, it is generally really difficult to get into a university due to the lack of it. Thanks to SJI International, I learnt so much and to me, it’s the best school that I’ve attended. My teachers are very friendly and helpful; always there when I needed help. SJI International not only educates me academically, but it also teaches me how to be a good citizen. Through the lessons and values I’ve learnt here, I’m looking forward to bring it forward and serve the community as a good citizen even after I graduate.”

Nethmi Himaya Ferguson

“Whenever I return home to Indonesia, I am reminded of how much the scholarship to study at SJI International has impacted my life and how much I have grown as a person. The school’s emphasis on giving back to the community and being of service to others, is something that my friends back home don’t quite understand. The fact that I have become more aware of the less fortunate around me and contemplating the impact of my actions before I do anything, is something I am really thankful to SJI International for. “

“The SJI International Scholarship has given me the opportunity to meet people of various backgrounds and ethnicity, granting me the opportunity to appreciate cultural diversity. It has been a wonderful journey forming strong bonds with fellow peers who come from such diverse backgrounds. Even after I graduate, I hope to pass on this blessing of opportunity back to our community, and invite those who need it most to experience the Josephian culture.”

Aloysius Amos Lau

“This scholarship not only provided financial support, it also transformed me into a person who is now capable of approaching different issues from multiple perspectives. Studying in an international environment gives me the chance to interact with people of diverse nationalities and religions, from which I started to look at a matter from their perspective and in doing so, glean a better understanding of their actions and behaviours. Some come from well-to-do families while others come from a less-fortunate background. By aligning to our Lasallian ideology, I will aspire to carry on the idea of “being the people of integrity and people for others”.

Phan Vu Long

“The SJI International Scholarship has changed my life completely. I’m indebted to SJI International and its donors for allowing me this excellent opportunity to complete the International Baccalaureate at such an esteemed institution. My teachers have been nothing short of amazing; undercover heroes who constantly work hard to push me to my greatest potential. The IB exams are just round the corner, and I hope that I can do well in order to further my studies at my dream university, The London School of Economics. Having benefitted from kind donors, I too aspire to be successful in the future so that I can one day contribute back to the successful scholarship programme here. I’m truly delighted to be a part of the SJI International family and am proud to call myself a Lasallian.”

THE IMPACT OF SUPPORT

24

A publication of gratitude for the donors and supporters of SJI International

LEARNING WITH GENUINE CURIOSITY My experience at SJI International has changed my life in so many ways.

SJII also made me realise that there was so much more to school than plain academia. Through the countless extra-curricular activities offered for students to try, I was able to explore my interest in music and cultural dancing. With its international diversity, I was able to befriend vastly interesting people of differing ethnicities and backgrounds, allowing me to explore many things outside the circle I am so used to.

Prior to receiving the scholarship, I was perhaps more different on the inside than I was externally. Coming from a decent national school in Indonesia, I treated my schooling as a mere duty and was only focused on performing academically well without caring too much for what the non-academic aspects had to offer. Sure, my grades were great, but I felt rather empty on the inside because nothing in school made me excited.

My time in SJII was a life-transforming journey; indeed a story to remember. All this would not have been possible without the generosity of the SJI International Scholarship, for which my gratitude knows no bounds. I would especially like to thank my sponsor, the Liem Sioe Liong Foundation, for providing the financial support for my studies. Coming from an economically humble background, studying in Singapore was financially unthinkable if not for the scholarship. I deeply value the experiences that I have gained from this scholarship and I wish to be of good value to my alma mater and my sponsor in the near future.

However, my perception of school changed when I entered SJII. Here, I saw a different side of what an institution can be. In terms of the academics, I was not only taught by many excellent teachers, but more importantly, I slowly became more interested in what they were teaching. While in the past, my learning was driven by the need to as a “duty, I now learn by genuine curiosity to know more. I was still performing well academically, but the excitement towards learning that the teachers at SJII ignited in me allowed me to remain constantly curious and shaped my passion in the field of Science and Engineering.

ENTER TO LEARN LEAVE TO SERVE The two years I spent at SJI International passed in a blink of an eye, and I can still remember most of it like it all happened yesterday. Although I came from the local system and took an unconventional path coming to this school, I see now that SJII changed me and forced me to grow in so many different ways. Aside from being intellectually stretched by the IB programme, SJII exposed me to so many amazing opportunities that I would not have been granted elsewhere, from research attachments to A*STAR, to scholarships for university and even the chance to plan an unchaperoned overseas service trip. I looked forward to coming to school because of the constant support from my peers and teachers; this support is what has spurred me to become bolder in pursuing my passions, from arts to dance to the environment. As I left the school last year, I looked forward to effecting my own kind of change for this world. To this day, I continue to volunteer with environmental NGOs and am still working with SJII’s ECO club to make our school more sustainable. I will go on to read Environmental Studies in Yale University in June on a PSC scholarship, in hopes of making a positive difference for our Earth. I aspire to continue to embody SJII’s motto: “Enter to Learn, Leave to Serve”. All of this would not have been possible without my kind sponsors. Coming to SJII has given me this ammunition to find my footing and purpose in life and I am truly grateful to you for granting me this opportunity to learn and grow in this school. Even long after I leave, I know I will continue to hold SJII close to my heart forever.

I now carry that confidence with me throughout whatever I do. The end of my time in SJII marks the start of a new chapter. YEN NHI TRUONG VU Graduated Summa Cum Laude with Distinction, BA Mathematics from Amherst College, Stanford University; Currently pursuing a PhD in Matematics

“After departing from SJI International, I enrolled in the Bachelor programme at Amherst College in Massachusetts, USA. It is at Amherst that I came to really appreciate how much SJI International had prepared me for the rigor of higher education. Indeed, in comparison to some of my fellow classmates who might be less prepared to write academic papers, perform independent researches or learn a new language, I fit in the college educational environment without any struggle or fear, all thanks to the many core aspects of the IB programme. The education I received at SJI International and Amherst College has helped me prepare well for graduate school, and this past March, I was admitted to some of the top doctoral programmes in mathematics such as at Princeton University, Harvard University, Stanford University, Brown University, etc. I am sure the invaluable lessons and skills I learned at SJI International will continue to help me succeed in the quest to become a good mathematician.”

Besides tutoring underprivileged students here, I intend to apply my academic skills to improving communities — potentially through conducting economics field research on the outcomes of educational programs in rural China. Truly, I am forever grateful for the holistic education I’ve received at SJII — a big thank you to the teachers and staff at SJII, as well as the scholarship donors who have gotten me to where I am today!”

“The time management and critical thinking skills which were honed back in SJI International are certainly important skills for me as I fight my way to make the best out of my time here in university. What’s more, the holistic approach of teaching that SJII had offered to me is also another plus point in terms of actively engaging myself in many different types of activities other than studying, which I think actually supports my study in a very meaningful way. Last but not least, the global perspective that I gained and the friendships that I had back in SJII really play an important part of who I am today. All in all, SJII was truly an irreplaceable and priceless experience and I am more than grateful for it. Thank you.”

I am extremely grateful to my scholarship sponsor, Khoo Teck Puat Foundation, for sponsoring my two years of education in SJI International. If not for the scholarship, I would never have been able to experience such a wonderful school programme here and I wouldn’t have accomplished as much as I have today.”
