OUR
LASALLIAN CALL Br Lawrence Humphrey, FSC Brother President
Throughout the past year we have heard the message of “Giving Back, Looking Forward,” the theme for the 10th anniversary of St. Joseph’s Institution International, and also the title song written and recorded for our 10th birthday, and performed for the first time at the 10th Anniversary Gala. This special 10th anniversary issue of Humanitas provides a record of so many acts of giving back by SJI International Scholar Alumni, as well as our many generous benefactors. For our graduates, their reflections shared herein, speak for themselves. From the first batch in 2009, to those who have just headed off to National Service and university, it is clear that these remarkable young women and men are already giving back to the communities and institutions in which they live and work and study. Similarly, those whose names are to be found in the Circles of Gratitude section, although most are not counted among our alumni (remember, SJI International is only 10 years young!), view their support of our school as a way to give back to their own Alma Maters, to Singapore, to the De La Salle Brothers, and to whomever supported their education and successful lives thus far. An investment in SJI International could be considered the quintessential act of “Looking Forward.” Every donation to our school represents an investment in the future – most definitely in the lives of our Scholars – but also an investment in the world, made a better place, for sure, because of the
“Every donation to our school represents an investment in the future – most definitely in the lives of our Scholars – but also an investment in the world, made a better place, for sure, because of the many contributions of our alumni for many countless years to come.” many contributions of our alumni for many countless years to come. Thanks to you, remarkable things are taking place every day at SJI International. For many of our students, these experiences and their opportunity to attend our school are only possible because of your support. So much of what they learn and discover here reveals to them what means to be a person of integrity and a person for others. Thus, they are united with you and all who are committed to extending the mission of our school to the last, the lost, and the least. That’s “our Lasallian call”, to use the words of our 10th anniversary song.

THE YEAR
IN NUMBERS As a Lasallian School, SJI International strives to bring education to all, especially the last, the lost and the least. The SJI International Scholarship Programme was originally set up to attract outstanding students, regardless of background, and it has played an important role in allowing SJI International to become a school that is widely recognised for its outstanding academic results within a very holistic programme. Although the majority of our Scholarships are offered to deserving Singaporean students, we have also previously offered overseas scholarships to students from East Timor, Myanmar, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam. This year, we welcomed our first Cambodian scholar.

SCHOOL FOUNDERS CELEBRATION
The evening of 20 January 2017 signified a major milestone for the SJI International community, as we celebrated our first decade with the 10th Anniversary School Founders Celebration – the first of our many anniversary events. Brother Larry welcomed everyone with an address, followed by a video which highlighted the history of the school as narrated by members of the Leadership Council, alumni, long-service staff. Mr Philip Yeo, our Guest of Honour, together with Brother Larry, Mr Mah Bow Tan and Mr Roy Quek, Chairman of the Board of Governors, led a ceremonial cutting of an especially made SJI International birthday cake, while people sang the birthday song. St Joseph’s Institution International opened its doors just ten years ago. The first High School classes
9
were held in what is now the Raphael block of the Elementary School. With 104 students and 14 teaching staff, with Br Michael Broughton as Brother President and Mr Andrew Bennett as the Founding Principal, our school was born. The Elementary School would open one year later, under the leadership of Mrs Louise Grant, when the High School moved into its current buildings. We were honoured that Louise, Andrew, and Br Michael were able to join us for the night, together with six staff members who had also been with us since day 1 – Susi Teo, Glenis Chng, Sherry Ng, Sam Lim, Chia Puay Leng, and Matthew Zagrodnik. That night, they were honoured with long service medallions, in recognition of their
commitment and dedication to the school. Mr Quek thanked the many dedicated men and women who in one way or another have contributed to the establishment of SJI International. He particularly acknowledged the many members of the Leadership Council who were there with us that night, as well as the founding teaching and admin staff, and some alumni from our first ever batch of students who graduated in 2009. He then encouraged everyone to continue supporting the school and its mission to cater to the last, the lost, and the least.
Along with performances from both Elementary and High School, the night culminated with the singing of ‘We Are Lasallian’ – a wonderful ending that bonded several generations of Josephians, spanning all the way back to the Class of 1957.
SCHOLARSHIP
AWARDS CEREMONY Members of the Board of Governors, donors, Scholars, parents and staff gathered at the Glass Hall of SJI International for an evening of celebration and dinner at the Scholarship Awards Ceremony on 26 January 2017.
The night began with an opening prayer by Brother Larry, an address by Mr Roberts and finally a speech from Guest-of-Honour and Leadership Council member, Dato’ Dr Leslie Lam who then presented Scholarship scrolls to the fourteen students. That night, we also welcomed our first ever Cambodian scholar. Local scholar Ong Ju Boon then took the stage to share and reflect on how his Scholarship has made a huge difference to his life.
Dinner was served, accompanied by background music played by SJI International’s very own talented music students and Mrs Thorpe. The musicians who performed were: Isabelle Chew, Matthew Soh, Rhys Wilson, Sophia Goh, and Cerys Llewelyn, applauded enthusiastically at the end of their set. All-in-all, everyone had a wonderful time celebrating with the Scholars, dining on a wonderful Chinese meal and enjoying the music and companionship of the evening. We would like to thank all members of the Board of Governors, donors, parents, staff and students who contributed to making the night a huge success.
11
The students assisting at the event were: Juan Sebastian Banchs and Agnes Priscilla Layarda (Emcees), and the Student Advancement Board led by Daryl Chiang (ushers).
The 10th Anniversary Dinner brought the SJI International community together for a momentous night of celebration. It was held at The Ritz-Carlton Millenia on 12 May 2017.
13
Attendees included ex-Josephians who are on the Leadership Council and Board of Governors, students, teachers, parents from both High School and Elementary School, and friends who have donated to the school. The Guest-of-Honour was the President of the Republic of Singapore, Dr Tony Tan, a patron of the school. A grand total of $3,575,728 was raised and pledged from this fundraising dinner. These donations will be channelled towards the school’s Building Fund as it prepares for its relocation in 2022 once the current lease expires. Upon arrival, guests were ushered in with soothing jazz pieces played by the High School Jazz Band, led by Mr Chua and Mr Fantom. The cocktail area was decorated to resemble that of a “Gallery of Accomplishments” over the last 10 years by Ms Oxley, with the help of Mrs Roberts and Ms Lange. Yearbooks and past school publications were also on display for guests to reminisce over the school’s history. The programme of the night kicked off with a highly-energetic showcase of “Play-nting” (Painting and Drumming) by Khairul Anwar from Grade 12, during which he painted a statue of John Baptist De La Salle with the use of drum sticks. Shortly after, the Gamelan Ensemble majestically played Tabuh Sekar Lilit as the Welcome Fanfare for President Tony Tan as he made his entrance.
Other highlights of the entertainment included the musical performances from both Elementary and High School students. From the Elementary School, Samantha Lee from Grade 6 sang Somewhere Over the Rainbow and Stanley Qin from Grade 4 wowed the audience with Chopin: Waltz in B minor, Op. 69 No. 2. From the High School, the African Marimba Ensemble, Orchestra and Bella Voce Senior Choir took the stage and blew its audience with their sheer talent and overflowing energy. Yet, in spite of the wide selection of entertainment, the highlight of the night was the 10th Anniversary Song performance by a massive 120-strong combined Elementary and High School Choir and Orchestra. Lyrics for this special song were written by students and their families, with music scoring done by Head of Music, Mrs Thorpe. Heartfelt speeches were also delivered by various stakeholders who have either played a huge part in the founding of the school or have in some way or another, been greatly impacted by the school. Mr Michael Sng, one of the school’s founders; Sophuth Phon, our first and only Cambodian scholar; and Ian Chai, a scholar
from our founding batch of 2009, shared deeply personal and touching accounts of their journey with SJI International. Upon the formal close of the event, the High School Orchestra came back onstage and the dance floor was opened. The orchestra played their popular rendition of a medley from the movie Grease as the remaining guests danced the rest of the night away. Huge thanks goes out to all staff helpers, student performers and ushers, teachers and parent volunteers without whom the 10th Anniversary Dinner would not have been the success it was. And especially to Ms Fiona Rankine and Brother Larry, Chairpersons of the Organising Committee, for their dedication and hard work in putting together such a massive event, but more importantly ensuring that it was a pleasantly memorable and unforgettable night for one and all.

SCHOLARS’ REFLECTIONS THE POWER OF A THANKFUL HEART

This scholarship is so much more than just financial aid, it’s a platform for students like myself to gain not only a world-class education but most importantly, to be a part of a community like no other. Here at SJI International, we are taught to shower unconditional love and support for the needy, regardless of recognition but instead because it is what’s right. This school shatters the stereotype that schools are just for learning because SJI International is so much more than that. Upholding core values of service and holistic learning, each student simply can’t help but blossom in this nurturing environment. I am immensely grateful for this transformative experience and I hope that many more young students are given the opportunity to go on this journey. Lastly, this wouldn’t be possible without the benevolent hearts of the SJI International family. To them, I am eternally indebted.
The scholarship has provided me with so many new opportunities. I was able to immerse in an international environment where I can learn about new culture, to engage in holistic education to train myself to be a well-rounded student, and last but not least, to make long-lasting friendships and have the best three years of my life. Our current scholars reflect on what the scholarship means to them, what they have learned on their journey so far, and how they plan to give back to the world and their communities in the future.
“This scholarship has given me the opportunity to interact with a global community allowing me to identify the values that exist within different races. While being a part of the Lasallian community I am given this wonderful opportunity to interact with many international students enabling me to better prepare myself for the real world. This scholarship has enabled me the opportunity to pursue my goals by providing me with a holistic education as well as shown me the values of humanity through the generosity of my donor. It has been three wonderful years studying in SJII where I had the opportunity to make lifelong friendships and meet wonderful people.” Shane Moraes

I am not good with words, but I would just like to say that the opportunity to go to SJII has been nothing short of incredible. SJI International is not a mere stepping stone in my life but a pitstop that have enriched my life holistically. Despite its importance to my future, academic opportunity is merely one of the many things that SJI International has provided me with. The incredible friends that I have managed to make across all grades, the service opportunity, the exploration of passion are things and countless other things are things which makes me hold SJI International very closely to my heart.

The impact of the SJI International scholarship have been monumental to me and that would still be an understatement. I remember vividly when my 5th grader self decided that he will do everything and anything required to pursue an education in Singapore. So to be able to fulfil that childhood goal of mine has motivated me to utilise every second of my time here and make it worthwhile. Apart from the top quality education I receive in SJI International I was also exposed to so many different experience ranging from the service activities to the overnight expeditions abroad. I am also grateful for all the new people I have met and the lessons I learnt from them. As for the future, I intend to make service a part of my routine as I have realised the importance of giving back and the experiential learning I can obtain from the service activity itself.

“There’s a great, big, world out there!” Those few words, I feel, best encapsulate my sentiments on this unique experience I’ve had the past year and a half. I’ve done so many things that I never thought I could ever possibly do. I went free diving during challenge week and saw a baby shark; we helped the environment by doing different things like building coral nurseries; I ran marathons and played numerous sports I never have and I’ve explored places I never would have known existed had I not come here to SJII. I’ve also learned a lot of new lessons, both in academics and life. I’ve done and learned Chemistry I could have only dreamed about. Learned French, a language I only used to copy the accent of; I looked at Literature and Media in a completely new manner, I’ve learned to budget and spend both my money and time wisely... I’ve learned a lot, and I’ll take those with me probably ‘til the time I take my final breath. But above all that, the most important part to me is the people I’ve met and the connections I’ve made. I’ve met so many people in my short time in IB and have so many memories with them. Although we probably will go our separate ways, I know we’ll always carry at least a part of each other no matter where we go. We’ve been through good and bad times together and I would particularly like to thank my friends for helping me through a lot of my dark times because a lot of things have happened in my personal life that I cannot mention here but, as sincere as I can, I thank you guys. I’ve gained new perspectives and I feel like I was freed from the box that was my old life. My limits and my world has expanded. Soon, I’ll be moving on and likely onto another part of the world. With me, I’ll take the lessons, the teachings and the mission to make the world a better place. I will impart to others what was given to me here and try to do for others what SJI International has done for me. But before I go, to those who have afforded me this opportunity, I thank you and I cannot tell you how much I appreciate what you’ve given me. I hope you can continue helping other students like me and my peers improve our lives by giving them the chance to attend in our wonderful school, St Joseph’s Institution International.” Track Maverick Torres

Shery Rose Quieng “Coming from the Philippines, the SJI International scholarship for the International Baccalaureate (IB) meant the world to me as I have always wanted to seek a better education. Unfortunately, such quality education is lacking in my country, notwithstanding, the scholarship has opened doors for me to gain more knowledge, not only about subject matters but also about myself – who I am; what I am passionate about; and what will I be in the near future. Undertaking the IB taught me how to become more resilient in life as my first several months in Singapore proved to be harrowing due to a completely different living and school environment. Nonetheless, I have learned to stand back up every time I fall with the help of SJI International family and the hope, courage and integrity instilled by SJI International in me. My experiences in IB has inspired me to do something that can make a positive impact on the world. I’m not talking about world-scale but at least, doing what I can when I have the capabilities and right circumstances to do so. Hence, I am now working towards my newfound desire to help protect the ocean and marine life. I am currently volunteering as a docent in SEA Aquarium in Sentosa to create awareness about the ocean and marine life conservation amongst the people who visit the aquarium. In the near future, once I enter the working field, I aspire to use my knowledge and skills to give back to the world by developing medicine through the use of biochemistry and biotechnology.”
“
Being in SJI International has exposed me not only to different types of people, but also to teachers and staff who are genuinely concerned, and care for, their students. In this nurturing, supportive environment, the school’s mission of becoming people of integrity and people for others is truly embodied by my teachers and staff, who always go the extra mile to ensure success for everyone. I am truly grateful for the opportunities my scholarship has offered me, and has made me more aware of the ways in which I can give back to my community, be it in church, or in the needy around Singapore. THE IMPACT OF SUPPORT

A MEMORABLE TIME IB SCORE: 44
Before coming to SJI International as a local scholar, I was from SJI Independent’s Class of 2015. During my formative years spent in SJI, the Lasallian mission resonated deeply with me, especially after attending the Lasallian Leadership Training Camp as I learnt about the wider Lasallian community in Singapore and around the world. As such, when the time came for me to decide on the next step of my educational journey, SJI International was an easy choice as it offered both a Lasallian education while also providing a new schooling environment, one drastically different from SJI and other junior colleges in Singapore.
multiple co-curricular activities (CCAs) and taking up leadership roles to hone my leadership skills. I took part in a wide range of CCAs, ranging from Malay Cultural Club to Squash, while holding leadership positions such as captain of the Under-19 Rugby squad and House Captain of Jaime. From these experiences, I learnt a lot, especially through my leadership roles as I improved on my ability to communicate effectively and efficiently. Furthermore, studying in such a unique environment allowed me to learn more about different cultures from all over the world and befriend people I normally wouldn’t have the opportunity to.
During my time in SJI International, the school really focused on providing a holistic education. As such, besides keeping up my grades, I decided to make full use of the opportunity to study in an international school by joining
Since graduating from SJI International in 2017, I miss the fun and relaxing times I had, especially when undergoing tough times in my National Service (NS). Nonetheless, I feel that my time with the school has a
lasting impact on me, as the skills and qualities I had picked up in those 2 years have really helped me in NS. Currently, I am a Section Commander in the Singapore Civil Defence Force. As such, I am given the opportunity to use my leadership abilities on a daily basis, to command and control my firefighters. Furthermore, the Malay I picked up from my time in Malay Cultural Club has proved to be a valuable resource as it allows me to interact better with my Malay counterparts. Overall, my time in SJI International was a memorable one and I have no regrets choosing this unorthodox path after graduating from secondary school. Ultimately, all this would not have been possible without generous donors donating to the SJI International scholarship fund and I am deeply grateful to those who have funded my education. GRATITUDE
At SJI International, I achieved my dreams. With the guidance and support of dedicated teachers and staff, I managed good grades, represented Singapore at fencing competitions around the world, and realised my childhood desire of piloting an airplane. SJI International encouraged my sense of adventure, and I will always remember trekking and kayaking with friends on Lantau Island in a thunderstorm. I am now on a new adventure as I complete my National Service being a tank commander, and I will be going to Germany this month to conduct live firing from a Leopard Tank. At SJI International, I formed lasting friendships with students whose diverse aspirations, interests, and backgrounds helped me to establish new perspectives. From engaging discussions with teachers and friends, I broadened my mind and learned to think critically about real world matters

and global issues. My time here has helped me develop the analytical, reasoning and thinking skills necessary to gain admission to the University Scholar’s Programme at NUS. At SJI International, I helped special-needs children with their weekly therapy sessions at the Riding for Disabled Association. I also rehabilitated abused elephants in Thailand during Challenge Week. These experiences ignited a sense of service in me, and I plan to use my computer science education at NUS to develop initiatives that improve lives, especially for the less fortunate. I believe that technology would have the greatest impact if directed towards social change, and I aim to develop meaningful initiatives
that benefit society. I am very grateful and honoured to have been a recipient of the SJI International IBDP Scholarship. Thank you so much for your support. I hope to one day help others, just as you have helped me. Ryan Ong Class of 2017 Outstanding Achievement Awardee Recipient of a Peter Lim & Charity Golf Scholarship

A school community is just a school without the people that fills its campus and walks its halls. Studying at SJII provided me with guidance from teachers with different and intriguing perspectives such as Ms Juett and Mr Saranam. They formed my knowledge foundation that will help me achieve my goals in life. SJI International also gave me unparalleled opportunities such as Challenge Week, and a chance to be Vice-President of the Senior Council. Honestly it has been an enriching journey and an adventure. All these experiences gave me an education not just confined to the four walls of a classroom but worldly knowledge that broaden my horizons.

Last but not least, the global perspective that I gained and the friendships that I had back in SJI International really play an important part of who I am today. All in all, SJI International was truly an irreplaceable and priceless experience and I am more than grateful for it. Thank you.”

“SJI International truly is an amazing school and there are many great aspects, but to me, the greatest aspect is the people. I am extremely grateful to my scholarship sponsor, Khoo Teck Puat Foundation, for sponsoring my two years of education in SJI International. If not for the scholarship, I would never have been able to experience such a wonderful school programme here and I wouldn’t have accomplished as much as I have today.”

“Words can scarcely begin to express the depths of gratitude I feel for my time in SJI International. At sixteen, I was unable to predict the ways in which I would grow from the SJI International scholarship. Now, I stand at the edge of another opening door - a little scared, a little excited, but very hopeful for what the future might hold.

“My time at SJI International has been 3 of the most fortunate years of my life. There are just so many things I could reflect upon, but one thing really stands out. Not only I was given the exposure to other cultures from my international friends, but surprisingly I was getting closer to mine than ever before. I am from Indonesia, and yet it was at SJII where I first touched and played Gamelan, a traditional musical instrument indigenous to Bali, Indonesia. It was also at SJI International the first time I touched, read, and enjoyed Indonesian works of literature. Hard to believe that I became more aware and respectful towards my own culture when I am a hundred miles away from home. And sure, the IB experience was great and all, but it was there at SJI International where we all come to celebrate and appreciate various cultures as an international community. Looking back, I truly am grateful to have taken that scholarship opportunity. It was not all about the numbers after all!”
JUAN SEBASTIAN BANCHS RODRIGUEZ Studying Mechanical Engineering at UCLA
“SJI International offered me great opportunities to explore my passions. From the basics of funding through a scholarship, to the incredible Bollywood and Physics Clubs which shaped my life in a way I never imagined. From the opportunities offered, and my mother’s encouragement to pursue them, my most valuable lesson sprouted: Give every opportunity a chance, only then will you find what you seek the most.”
