MISSION
Enabling students, within a Lasallian community, to learn how to learn and learn how to live, empowering them to become people of integrity and people for others.
MISSION
Dear Friends,
We are extremely grateful to our visionary philanthropists and donor community who continued to support us in 2021 despite the ongoing challenges of the pandemic. Every single act of generosity has impacted our students’ lives in some way - so thank you.
As a not-for-profit school, all of the facilities, resources and provisions that enhance our
students’ educational experience rely heavily on the generosity of our donors. The ramifications of Covid-19, be it financial, emotional or both; as well as the impact it had on our ability to run annual fundraising events (in their traditional format) could have led to a significant decline in funds pledged or donated throughout the year. However, this was not the case at all, there continued to be an outpouring of support from our community
including current and former parents, faculty and staff through Annual Giving appeals, alumni, board members and friends of SJI International, for which we are truly grateful.
In 2021, our Scholarships and Bursaries Fund along with the Building and Development Fund received a combined total of over $2.5 Million in donations.
This example of generosity and kindness of spirit is what lies
at the heart of SJI International and helps us to ensure long term sustainability in delivering an outstanding values-based education, as well as the ever-expanding Scholarship Programme and Building Fund that our community values so much.
Your support to the Scholarships and Bursaries Fund has helped ensure that scholarships are available to exceptional students from Singapore and the wider region. It is your support that helps us fulfill our Lasallian mission to serve ‘the last, the lost and the least’ allowing us to provide life changing education for all, regardless of circumstance.
Your support of the Building and Development Fund helps us expand our campus and facilities. It is your support that enables us to enhance our learning spaces providing opportunities for our students to excel in their learning.
As you will read in the following
pages, your support doesn’t simply improve the life of one person, but the lives of many. We hope you will take some time to read this report and celebrate the successes of 2021, including the reflections from our current and alumni scholars and students as well as a heartfelt message from one of our many supportive families, The Minjoot Family.
Our St Joseph’s Institution International community is unique in so many ways and our students’ experience is strengthened by your generosity, for which we are truly thankful. As we celebrate our 15th Anniversary in 2022, and all that has been achieved so far, we now look to the future and hope you move forward with us, as the best is yet to come.
Once again, sincere thanks for everything you do and the difference you make as ‘people of integrity, people for others’.
Our St Joseph’s Institution International community is unique in so many ways and our students’ experience is strengthened by your generosity, for which we are truly thankful.
Maria Ciola Director, Advancement, Communications & Admissions
“Every single act of generosity has impacted our students’ lives in some way - so thank you.”
The sculpture depicts Joseph, wearing his carpenter’s tools, swinging the Child Jesus in a playful manner, with two children, a boy and a girl, joining in with the fun.
Several generous donors supported the commissioning of this beautifully meaningful sculpture for our school. The most eminent of these donations was made by Ms Faith Koh Hui Hwa in memory of her late husband, Mr Christopher Minjoot – a Founder and founding member of the SJI International Board of Governors.
Speaking of her husband, Ms Koh explains “Chris was on the Board of Governors for many years, right up until 2016 when he passed on. One of
Chris’s wishes was to donate to the school, and following a helpful conversation with Brother Larry –who suggested a statue – I decided on commissioning the sculpture.”
Following further discussions, Singapore’s Cultural Medallion recipient Chong Fahcheong was selected to create the piece using the image of a father playing with his young child as the point of reference.
The example set by St Joseph, the patron and namesake for our school, who had nothing more at heart than to care for Jesus, is precisely what SJI International looks to emulate in the nurturing and guidance of all children entrusted to its care.
If you’ve been on campus recently, chances are you will have seen the ‘St Joseph and the Children’ sculpture located in front of our Assembly Hall, on the way to the Chapel.
An interview with the Minjoot Family
These values were key in the Minjoot family’s decision to send all three of their children to SJI International.
“We believe in the values that SJI International holds, as they are aligned with those of our own family. The 4 pillars of learning - Academic, Outdoor Education, Service Learning and CoCurricular Activities provide a truly holistic education. My children have all been heavily involved in service trips and expeditions organised by the school. On one of these expeditions, to Northern Thailand, my children helped build a strawberry farm so that local villagers could grow their own fruits and subsequently have their own source of income from the sales. This experience demonstrated that it is not just donating money that helps, but enabling people to gain their independence,” she said.
Ms Koh’s sons have now all graduated from SJI International, her youngest son, Ethan most recently in 2020. Ewan, her middle son, has just completed National Service in Singapore and is now embarking on the next step of his education at Durham University in the UK. Whilst Ryan, her oldest son is now in the third year of university at King’s College London, UK.
Despite all three sons completing their studies at SJI International and now being part of our Alumni Association, Ms Koh explains why she continues to give back:
“We can continue to share with others what our children have experienced and gained. Hopefully,
more students can enjoy the exceptional education and opportunities that the school provides. As a not-for-profit organisation, SJI International relies on the support and generosity of the donors. With no government funding, every act of support makes a difference to a child, so I think it’s a very good cause to support,”.
“I think if we believe in the core values of SJI International, serving others, and giving back to society, there are many ways in which we can do this, all facilitated by the school. When we choose to serve others, we can set an example for our children. Hopefully, that will encourage each of us to do something for a good cause. We can start small, even volunteering once a year, committing one weekend. It’s good enough, and you will feel like doing more when you experience the joy of giving just as Saint Francis of Assisi says for it is in giving that we receive.”
Ms Koh and her family have been long-term supporters of the School. She continues the call to serve our community through her recent appointment as a member of the SJI International Board Human Resource Committee.
“When we serve others, we can set an example for our children.”
the majority of our Scholarships are offered to deserving Singaporean students, we have also previously offered overseas scholarships to students from Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Myanmar, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam.
a Lasallian School, SJI International strives to bring education to all, especially the last, the lost and the least. The SJI International Scholarship Programme was originally set up to attract outstanding students, regardless of background, and it has played an important role in allowing SJI International to become a school that is widely recognised for its outstanding academic results within a very holistic programme.
Appeals were sent to parents throughout the year, giving them the option to donate to either the Scholarships and Bursaries Fund or the Building and Development Fund.
In Support of Bursaries
The funds raised via this Annual Appeal sent to staff are used to fund bursaries to support our High School students who are affected by a sudden drastic change in the family’s financial situation at home – such as the death of a parent, loss of employment or divorce for example.
In recognition of the accomplishment of those students who have been awarded a Scholarship through our SJI International Scholarship Programme, we traditionally hold an awards dinner at the start of each academic year.
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 safe management measures in place, we were regrettably unable to host the awards presentation in the traditional manner previously held.
On 3 September 2021, the scholars were presented with their scrolls by Brother President Lawrence Humphrey and Chairman of the Scholarship Committee, Mr Kenneth Li, at a socially distanced event held on campus following all necessary safe management measures.
In his address to the scholars, Mr Li said: “The fundamental reason you are a scholar is someone, somewhere believes in you. They believe in your successes, they believe in what
you can accomplish, and they believe that you will grow to be somebody who will make a difference in your community.”
Congratulations to our 2021 scholars.

To have the honour of receiving this scholarship means a lot to me, as I’ve always valued trying my best in my academic studies. I’m especially thankful for the motivating learning environment at SJI International, which has given me the opportunity to develop my interests in various fields. Furthermore, in my journey in SJI International, I’ve learnt the significance of being compassionate towards others in our community, or in other words, being a person for others.
Jenny Zhuo ‘22, ChineseIt goes beyond words to describe my gratitude for the scholarship. Not only has it offered me a priceless opportunity to receive a top-notch education in a marvellous institution, but it has also granted me a chance to realise how massive the world is. Before the scholarship, I held my belief in one core value - the eagerness to learn and the willingness to contribute, and now that established value has not changed but has even become stronger. Surrounded by intelligence and virtue, I become a more well-rounded person in terms of both perceptions of the world and standard of morality. The closer to the end of this demanding yet epic journey, the more eager to serve my purpose in lifeto make the world a better place. Had it not been for this scholarship, my scope would have always been narrow and shallow.
Through my years in SJI International, the school’s relentless dedication to the cultivation of an academic environment that nurtures the potential of each and every student has always been a point of personal pride. The sense of honour that the scholarship has conferred upon me constantly spurs me to push myself out of my comfort zone, relishing every new academic challenge that SJI International’s unique learning environment presents. I have been even more inspired to give back to the Lasallian community that has provided me with a multitude of invaluable learning opportunities; I strive to use my love for learning to motivate peers to strive toward exemplifying Lasallian virtues of inclusivity, excellence, and community engagement in all aspects of school and personal life. I am grateful for the doors that the scholarship has opened for me, and in my leadership roles, I will continue to pass down and nurture the same academic virtues that have allowed me to benefit from and thrive in SJI International’s competitive academic culture.
SJI International’s scholarship has not only given me the confidence to pursue my future aspirations but also provided me with the opportunity to receive an all-rounded education through the IB Diploma Programme. I feel well equipped to enter the next phase of my academic and professional journey with developed critical thinking skills that will differentiate me from my competitors.
Some of our former and current scholars reflect on what the scholarship means to them, what they have learned on their journey so far, and how they plan to give back to the world and their communities in the future.
His racing career took off ten years ago. Now at 18 with five championship titles under his belt, he’s showing no signs of slowing down, both on and off the race track.
For starters, he graduated as the ‘Josephian of the Year’ in 2021 – the highest honour given to a student at SJI International – and scored the highest marks in the IB examinations held in November.
This is certainly no mean feat, excelling in academics while balancing his passions, which go beyond racing.
As an SJI International Elementary School student, Alex joined the school’s Robotics CCA out of interest in STEM. Moving up to High School, he led Robotics Unbound, providing free introductory robotics and programming workshops to young children at SJI International Elementary School and through partnerships with local organisations like The Salvation Army, TOUCH and MENDAKI.
“I was determined to help these young students also potentially find passions in robotics or STEM learning as well as develop crucial skills such as communication and problemsolving,” said Alex.
In 2019 he co-founded XS News, a platform that condenses global affairs and complex issues into palatable forms for Gen Zs. The project was in response to the influx of fake news on the internet and to help his peers keep up-to-date with current affairs without going through articles full of jargon.
“We felt that this is especially pertinent in the current context of the pandemic, as it is important for people our age to stay informed about the global situation and its wider implications as well as not be influenced by fake news. Our bite-sized content aims to retain people’s attention whilst still allowing people to stay updated,” he shared.
XS News won the Young Founders Summit 2019 in Peking University, Beijing, receiving monetary backing of US$10,000 and mentorship from Founders Bootcamp, the world’s most extensive startup program for teenagers, to help them with this initiative.
The project runs on Instagram as its main platform, amassing over 2,200 followers as of writing. Alex and his cofounders Marco and Kai-Ryn – all SJI International alumni – have grown their team to include students from around the world.
He indeed has a long list of passion projects, as he also serves as the Digital and Innovations Director for The BAUM Movement, another SJI International alumni-led initiative educating Gen Zs on sustainable investing.
“Knowing that I was supported and kept up-to-date by my teachers gave me the freedom and confidence to explore my passions despite the workload of the IB Diploma Programme. I am truly grateful for all the teachers that mentored and supported me throughout my time at SJI International,” he said.
Over the next year and a half, Alex will fulfil his National Service (NS) duties for the Singapore Civil Defence Force.
“During this time, I hope to continue growing these projects. After NS, I aim to study engineering at university while also continuing [to participate] in some forms of car racing championships overseas. This allows me not only to continue pursuing my passion in motor racing but also advance my knowledge of the practical application of engineering that I learnt at SJI International.”
Ian graduated from SJI International in 2021, winning The Leadership Council Shield for Academic Excellence and the Academic Prize for History. In this interview, he shares more about his enriching International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme years, his most significant takeaways from an SJI International education, as well as his future plans and aspirations.
You were recognised for your excellence in your studies, but beyond academics, what was something that you worked on in school that you are proud of?
One of my proudest achievements was my involvement in History mentoring for IGCSE students. Despite being put on hold due to COVID-19 restrictions, I still managed to hold virtual meetings with my mentees to go through content and material for their exams. I was also extremely privileged to hold a lunchtime talk for Grade 11 IB History students about strategies for time management and success in the course. These opportunities profoundly resonated with me, and I found it very meaningful to be able to share my passion and experiences with those whose positions I could relate to.
During IB, how were you able to balance your passions and academics, while also giving back to your community through service?
While it may seem cliche, getting your work done early before deadlines and planning your time is the most efficacious strategy to avoid being swamped by assignments, pertinently during bottleneck periods in early-mid Grade 12. This gave me plentiful breathing room during deadlines to properly refine my work and submit things that I was truly proud of. As for balancing academics with my passions, this was challenging, but my advice would be to slot leisure time when you aren’t busy studying, for example, my basketball training was Friday mornings when I would not be studying anyway. Moreover, I made an effort to regulate myself and create “no-study” times, I made sure not to study any day past 10 pm and always kept Friday afternoons for exercise. Trusting in the work that you’ve put in already will help you be more confident and avoid studying too much,
burning out by repeating the same course material. Aside from that, my most valuable resources were my peers, teachers and senior mentors with whom I shared countless drafts and were an excellent source of ideas and notes. I was very fortunate to be able to take advantage of other successful seniors and learn from their expertise while collaborating with good achievers at my own year level. Even more importantly, I was not hesitant to reach out to my teachers regularly to refine my assignments and tap into their experience and knowledge. They were more than willing to help me, and I am very grateful for their tireless help and patience, truly invested in my work and success.
What is your most significant takeaway from an SJI International education?
Taking ownership of your education and focusing on consistency are the two main lessons I’ve learnt from my time at SJI International. I was very fortunate to surround myself with a group of like-minded friends who kept me accountable and ensured that we were always on the right track. Importantly, I’ve learnt that academics is not a zero-sum game, our culture in Singapore has prided itself in fierce competition and individualism however, I’ve realised that when taking international exams like the IGCSE and IB Diploma Programme, our schoolmates’ relative success to ours doesn’t have a large impact on our final individual result. Students should share resources for a more fulfilling experience.
I hope to study law in the UK after completing my National Service, so I’ll be busy preparing and reading for my interview, personal statement and LNAT test. While doing so, I hope to continue to involve myself in the SJI International community, mainly as a mentor to some of my juniors taking the IB Diploma Programme and helping them out with their academics. As for a career path, I hope that obtaining a law degree will open up wider opportunities in finance or law, of which I am still undecided. I hope to continue nurturing my passion for History and engage in further reading to keep myself sharp outside of an academic environment.
Since SJI International opened its doors in 2007, it has awarded more than 260 scholarships. Of that number around 15 are still at school completing the IB Diploma, and many of the more recent cohorts have yet to embark on their university education. However, we thought it timely to look and see how our scholars have fared since leaving school and to share updates on some whose education at SJI International was most generously sponsored – by you, our donors.

complemented me on my ability to communicate highly technical ideas well. I believe that it’s my exposure to friends from all around the world, many presentations I had to deliver and papers I had to write (Extended Essay, TOK essay, IAs) during my time at SJI International that taught me to organise and deliver my thoughts about deeply technical subjects with clarity. I still remember how I delivered my TOK presentation on Schrodinger’s Cat (a highly technical topic) which was very well received by a nontechnical audience. It was my friends at the hostel who weren’t Physics
students that helped me frame my presentation in a way that could be appreciated by everyone.
Therefore, it is not an exaggeration to state that SJI International and the SJI International scholarship equipped me well to excel at both technical and nontechnical aspects of my work. Comparing this to the friends I met at NTU Mathematics, without SJI International experience, in all likelihood, I would have taken a far narrower, more technical path than the one I have taken. I’m glad that I didn’t.”

“SJI International provided the sort of unparalleled holistic care that enabled me to develop as a whole person. Teachers encouraged me to pursue my academic interests beyond the classroom, and the wide range of extracurriculars available nurtured my love for the richness that life has to offer. Opportunities to participate in assemblies, leadership roles, and theatre helped me emerge out of my shell and set me up for success beyond high school. But above all, I very much resonate with the values that the school espouses: “enter to learn, leave to serve.” Figuring out a direction in life past mandated education is difficult and bewildering, but having that strong sense of shared values really helped me – and continues to help me – ground my direction with purpose. I am so grateful for my time at SJI International – thank you for helping to enable that!

“SJI International provided the sort of unparalleled holistic care that enabled me to develop as a whole person.”
Receiving the IB merit scholarship encouraged me as it indicated SJI International’s ability to reward students that have made the most out of the academic opportunities presented to them. I saw the scholarship not only as recognition of my past dedication and successes, but also felt a duty to further develop my academic journey by capitalising on the additional support extended to me. I was motivated by the school identifying my potential
and investing in me, this crucially gave me the confidence in my IB years to elevate my academic character as a more inquisitive and vocal learner. As cliche as it sounds, my time at SJI International imparted to me a true love for learning. I always advise my juniors to develop passion for the subjects they have chosen; my authentic enjoyment learning in the 2-year course made what would otherwise be a rigorous process much more smooth sailing and natural to me. The friends that I depended upon and synergised with during my time as an IB scholar are the ones that I treasure most after graduating. As I prepare for university applications, I am grateful for the resilience and responsibility I grew during my time at SJI International.
Receiving the coveted SJI International Scholarship was an immense privilege and inspired me to proudly follow the Lasallian values in my future endeavours, which I am truly grateful for.
The confidence placed in me by the school will always motivate me to give my best in everything I do and carry forward these values wherever this may take me. Despite setbacks, even a global pandemic, SJI International has provided me with an environment that helped me never feel ‘lost’. In fact, SJI International has provided us with tools to not only weather but to thrive during challenging times. There is no doubt that I owe so much of who I am now and my incredible wealth of experiences in both elementary and high school to the SJI International scholarship and community.

Having received the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to study at SJI International under the scholarship, I learnt numerous positive qualities that are important in my life ahead. One of these is leadership quality. Throughout my study at SJI International, I faced many occasions which eventually made me realise the importance of leadership in a group, be it in group work in class or in larger-scale organisations. Even after my graduation, I am constantly reminded to polish my leadership skills as I go on with my daily life, such as decision-making and leading people toward a common good, within my family or my circle of friends. I imagined that had I not had the chance to study at this school, I would learn about these skills much, much later (or even too late before I know it!).
We honour all our donors, including those who have chosen to give anonymously, who believe in the mission of SJI International and whose philanthropy has enabled us to continue providing an exceptional education to our students. Our Circles of Gratitude recognise donors’ cumulative donations as of 31 December 2021.

The Advancement & Communications Office (ACO) is responsible for managing St. Joseph’s Institution International’s long-term reputation, building relationships, and fundraising to secure the resources needed to support the school’s mission and Lasallian Catholic ethos.
The team engages and builds lasting relationships with those who can help support our fundraising priorities with their gifts, wisdom and time. We develop and organise Appeal campaigns and fundraising events, and produce Alumni/Donor stewardship material and fundraising reports.
We work to advance the school’s interests by building relationships with our stakeholders, media and government agencies as well as with private and non-profit organisations. We provide timely answers to community enquiries, links to campus resources and facilitate partnerships which advance the school’s Lasallian educational mission.
We coordinate branding and marketing efforts on campus and with our external partners, to ensure a strong and effective SJI International brand. The ACO envisions, develops and implements the school’s strategic PR and marketing plan. The team manages fundraising and engagement events and activities, production of PR, marketing and communications content for print, broadcast and social media in support of the school’s priorities, including fundraising and other strategic communications.
The ACO team, in collaboration with the Alumni Association, establishes and maintains supportive, lifelong connections with alumni around the world through frequent events and programmes, with the goal of advancing the Lasallian Catholic mission of the school.
Generosity and support is at the heart of the community at SJI International. As a non-profit institution, financial support is crucial to delivering the kind of outstanding education that our community values. We receive no government funding but are committed to offering high-quality education to all, through our Scholarship Fund and Building Fund.
By supporting SJI International, parents, faculty, alumni and members of our community demonstrate that they believe in the mission and vision of the school. The impact that these contributions, over and above what tuition and fees alone can provide, help us to ensure sustainability of our scholarship and building fund programmes over the long-term.
No matter how you choose to support the school; through annual giving, supporting our scholarship or building fund programmes, or leaving a legacy, your generosity will make a big difference. Consider giving today by making SJI International one of your philanthropic priorities, and invest in the future of our students and programmes!
As a Lasallian School, SJI International strives to bring education to all – especially the last, the lost and the least. By donating to the Scholarships and Bursaries Fund, you empower the school to provide life-changing opportunities to promising students from families whose financial situation would otherwise make it impossible for them to access quality education.
Although the majority of our Scholarships are offered to deserving Singaporean students, we have over the years offered scholarships to students from countries that include Thailand, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, East Timor, Myanmar and the Philippines. Backed to 2007, till to date, we have offered over 260 scholarships worth of S$20.6 million in value.
Your donations to the Building and Development Fund support campus improvements and maintenance, as well as allows us to invest in future building and development, to provide the best possible facilities and environment for our students’ education.
The current lease for our campus was recently extended by the government till 2025, followed by a likely relocation and need for a new campus to be built. As such, we have launched a multi-year fundraising project for the additional space required at our current location, as well as to prepare for the building requirements of our new campus. By contributing to the Building and Development Fund, you are contributing to empowering the lives of current students and the generations to come.
