BUILDING ON 15 Dear Friends and Supporters, As I sit down to write this, I am filled with a profound sense of gratitude and optimism. It is with immense pleasure and a heart brimming with appreciation that I extend my warmest greetings to all of you who have played an integral role in the success of our School. 2022 has been a momentous year for SJI International as we reached our 15th Anniversary. Throughout the year numerous events took place, including the 15th Anniversary Dinner held on campus at Thomson Road on 26th August 2022. The events were not only opportunities to acknowledge the successes of the past 15 years, but also provided platforms to announce four new and exciting initiatives from SJI International to kick-start the next chapter of our story ‘Building on 15’. The year also witnessed a remarkable outpouring of support that surpassed all our expectations. The continuous efforts of our community, including current and former parents, faculty, staff and alumni through our annual giving appeals, as well as board members and friends of SJI International is what lies at the heart of our success. For this, we extend our heartfelt appreciation. As a not-for-profit institution, SJI International relies wholeheartedly on the benevolence of donors to enrich the educational journey of our students and every act of generosity, no matter how small, has left an indelible mark on the lives of our students - shaping young minds and fostering an environment that enables growth, learning, and achievement.

In 2022, our Scholarships and Bursaries Fund along with the Building and Development Fund received over $4.5 million in donations, an incredible achievement! With this support, SJI International can ensure the long term sustainability in delivering an outstanding values-based education, as well as strengthen the expansion of our cherished Scholarship Programme and Building Fund, which are deeply valued by our community. Highlights of the ‘Building on 15’ initiatives include the new SJI International - Lion City Sailors Elite Development Scholarship, launched during the 15th Anniversary Dinner, which aims to provide Singapore’s top footballing talents with an opportunity to pursue both academic and sporting excellence. Each successful applicant receives a full scholarship for their studies for the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) – or for some scholars, the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma. The Building and Development Fund is supporting the expansion and renovation of the school canteen, which will be transformed into a space that not only caters for the provision of snacks and lunches, but create a multi-use, multisensory space for technology and innovation where students who have the aptitude and attitude can transcend classroom learning. Working with partners from the industry in the design and fitout, we aim to provide students with a platform for learning and innovation: a place to play, to create, to learn, to mentor, to invent. As you can see, your contribution really does

IMPACTFUL GIVING In 2018, Mr Louis Lim and Ms Nicola Shaw became part of the SJI International community, drawn by the school’s nurturing ethos and values-based approach to education. In this Q&A, they share their experiences and the motivations behind their steadfast support for the school, shedding light on the profound impact of giving back to both their family and the larger community. Their story exemplifies the transformative power of education and community engagement.

SJI International

How did you first become connected with SJI International, and what compelled you to join our close-knit community? We first became part of the SJI International community in 2018 when our elder daughter Olivia enrolled as a Prep 2 student in the elementary school. Lila-Ann joined her two years later in Prep 1 when Olivia was starting Grade 2. We were very keen for our children to develop and learn in a nurturing, close-knit community, having witnessed our nieces thrive under the SJI International pedagogy a decade earlier. The educational landscape offers numerous opportunities for children. What aspects of SJI International’s ethos and educational approach excited you the most for your children’s development? The Virtues Project™ has been an absolute standout for us. We were particularly drawn to the methods by which the values were taught and instilled in the system on multiple levels, such as the parent workshops organised, the school curriculum and amongst the teaching community. We are proud to be part of a community that places a positive emphasis on such soft skills alongside the traditional scholastic and extracurricular aspects of education.

05

Your unwavering support has made a significant impact on the school’s growth. Could you share the driving force behind your family’s commitment to supporting SJI International? We have been inspired by the stories from SJI International students who have been on scholarship programmes and, more importantly, the impact the school has had on their personal development. We have been grateful for the education and pastoral care the school has provided for our children and family members who have attended SJI International. As ardent supporters of SJI International, your experiences and insights hold immense value. What message would you like to convey to parents, alums, and community members about the importance of supporting our institution through volunteering and/or giving? We believe volunteering and giving to be very personal decisions. For us, giving back to SJI International has been a compelling and rewarding experience, both in terms of how we could impact the educational landscape and school community.

LEARNING HOW TO LEARN AND LIVE: Sher Mae Goh ‘22

For Class of 2022 scholar Sher Mae, the foundation of her educational experience at SJI International rested upon a simple yet profound principle: “Learning not just how to learn but how to live.” Guided by a dedicated team of teachers who embraced her mistakes as stepping stones to growth, she discovered a newfound confidence in herself. “I felt comfortable making mistakes without feeling inadequate,” she reflects, highlighting the nurturing environment that set the stage for her remarkable achievements. Central to this educational ethos was the school’s emphasis on mutual support, a cornerstone of the Lasallian tradition. Sher Mae vividly remembers her teachers’ open doors, the school counsellor’s ready availability, and her tutor’s unwavering presence. This nurturing ecosystem fostered a sense of community where academic excellence thrived, and compassion reigned supreme. “Cultivating a caring community provided the necessary conditions for academic excellence to thrive and to proliferate,” Sher Mae affirms, a testament to the profound impact of a supportive environment. The spirit of mutual support not only shaped her academic journey but also influenced her outlook on life. Embracing the value of collaboration over competition, she imbibed the belief that true success is achieved collectively. “True Lasallians go far by going together,” she states, echoing the core value of community that defines SJI International.

Yet, her journey wasn’t confined to the classroom. The school’s commitment to granting students agency and trust paved the way for her to explore a diverse array of extracurricular avenues. This freedom to pursue her passions culminated in a sense of responsibility to uphold the school’s values. Encouraged by a scholarship, Sher Mae embarked on a journey of community service, spearheading fundraisers and charity debate tournaments under the Literary Society’s banner. Here, her love for the humanities seamlessly merged with her drive to uplift the underprivileged, showcasing the holistic education SJI International provides. Debate, as a cornerstone of her extracurricular pursuits, played a pivotal role in shaping her aspirations. The Debating Society became a crucible for her intellectual growth and passion for law. As she passionately recounts, “Participating in the Debating Society catalysed my interest in studying law.” The arduous commitment demanded by debate not only honed her oratory skills but also broadened her understanding of pressing societal issues, particularly legal debates on criminalisation and social matters. The school’s unwavering support for the Debating Society opened doors to national-level tournaments, allowing Sher Mae to refine her abilities and deepen her passion. This interest reached its zenith during her time as an IB student, where she found herself under the tutelage of exceptional Higher Level History and Economics teachers. Their guidance augmented her analytical acumen, solidifying her resolve to pursue law at the university level.

SJI International

As Sher Mae stands on the precipice of her future, she looks back on her SJI International journey with gratitude and anticipation. Her story is one of academic brilliance intertwined with personal growth, community impact, and an unyielding commitment to shared success. Through her experiences, she embodies the essence of SJI International – a beacon of holistic education that nurtures not only exceptional students but also compassionate and driven global citizens.

TRUSTING THE PROCESS: Jared Lau ‘22

Looking back on his time at SJI International, Jared’s journey is one filled with nostalgia, camaraderie, and profound life lessons. From conquering the daunting challenges of IB exams to savouring the thrill of victory on the football field, his experiences have woven a tapestry of memories that he cherishes to this day. As he reflects on his educational journey, one thing stands out: the power of confidence and consistency.

“Always have confidence in your strategies, and trust the process,” he advises, sharing a hard-earned insight.

Scholarship was a turning point. “It wasn’t just about honour, but immense pride and validation,” he says. The scholarship wasn’t just financial support; it was a beacon of confidence that guided him to pursue his aspirations relentlessly. The global exposure from the IB Diploma Programme and the diverse student body cultivated a sense of global awareness, while the freedom to explore interests expanded his horizons. Recalling his fascination for biology, he credits his teachers for encouraging curiosity beyond the classroom. Joining societies and sports teams, and taking on leadership roles provided invaluable experiences that shaped his passions and convictions. “Without the SJI International scholarship, I would not have had such means to grow as a person, discover what I love, nor have the conviction to pursue them,” he shares with gratitude. Having recently completed his Police Officer Basic Course with the Singapore Police Force, he’s now embarked on a new adventure at the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. From mastering human anatomy to juggling online classes, real lectures, and campus activities, his days strike a harmonious balance between work and fun.

Through the rigours of preparing for exams and participating in CAS activities, he learned that success rarely comes without turbulence. He cautions against becoming too self-critical, emphasizing that missteps are an integral part of the learning process. The prestige of receiving the SJI International

Looking ahead, his path is well-laid. After medical school, he’ll embark on a two-year stint at a public hospital, fulfilling his housemanship and residency requirements. His journey will then lead him back to the Singapore Armed Forces or the Singapore Civil Defence Force, where he’ll serve as a Medical Officer, seamlessly blending his medical expertise with his National Service commitment.

SJI International

In a world often defined by uncertainties, Jared’s story is a testament to the profound impact of confidence, consistency, and unwavering support. As he continues his journey, he stands as a beacon of inspiration for students and dreamers alike, proving that the road to success may be bumpy, but it’s the willingness to learn from each bump that propels us forward.

“Grateful for the coveted SJI International Scholarship, I embrace Lasallian values in my pursuits, motivated by the school’s confidence in me to trust and carry these values forward. SJI International has provided us with tools to not only weather but to thrive during challenging times. I owe much of who I am now to this SJI International Scholarship and community.”

CLASS OF 2019 Nadya Tan Data Science Intern, Warner Bros. Discovery B.A. in Economics and Computer Science, Brown University, 2025 “I’m extremely grateful to SJI International for being a safe space to explore different academic and non-academic interests. It was an environment that really enabled me to discover what having a true love for learning meant.”

CLASS OF 2021 Ian Tham National Service (RSAF) Law, University of Cambridge, 2027

“My time at SJI International ingrained in me a strong sense of academic responsibility, especially as a scholar. I am grateful for both the academic skills and values I have left SJI International with that have paved the way into a new exciting phase in university. I hope to be able to continue to give back to the community as I have been mentoring some of my junior History students and it has been a joy seeing them blossom.”

CLASS OF 2022 Jenny Zhuo Applying to UK universities

“Receiving this scholarship means a lot to me, as I’ve always valued trying my best in my academic studies. I’m especially thankful for the motivating learning environment at SJI International, which has given me the opportunity to develop my interests in various fields. I’ve also learnt the significance of being compassionate towards others in our community, or in other words, being a person for others.”

CLASS OF 2022 Quoc Vuong Dinh Intending to major in Data Science at the University of Wisconsin - Madison

“Words can’t convey the depth of my gratitude for the scholarship. Beyond providing an exceptional education, it broadened my worldview. My core values of eagerness to learn and the willingness to contribute have become stronger. Among intelligent, virtuous peers, I developed a more well-rounded worldview and morality. Without this scholarship, my perspective would’ve remained narrow and shallow.”

ABOUT THE ACO The Advancement and Communications Office (ACO) plays a vital role in overseeing St. Joseph’s Institution International’s enduring reputation, cultivating meaningful connections, and mobilising financial resources to uphold the school’s mission and its Lasallian Catholic values.

Fundraising The team actively forges enduring connections with individuals who can contribute to our fundraising endeavours through their generous donations, valuable insights, and time commitment. We conceive and coordinate compelling Appeal campaigns and fundraising events, while also crafting Alumni/Donor appreciation materials and comprehensive fundraising reports.

Community Relations We work to advance the school’s interest by building relationships with stakeholders, media outlets, governmental bodies, private enterprises, and non-profit entities. We ensure prompt responses to enquiries from the community, provide access to campus resources and facilitate partnerships which advance the school’s Lasallian educational mission.

Integrated Branding, Marketing and Communications We coordinate cohesive branding and marketing initiatives both within our campus and in collaboration with external partners, fostering a robust and impactful SJI International brand presence. ACO takes the lead in conceiving, formulating, and executing the school’s strategic public relations and marketing roadmap. Our team expertly oversees a spectrum of fundraising and engagement events, while also curating PR, marketing, and communication materials for print, broadcast, and social media platforms. These efforts staunchly champion the school’s overarching priorities, encompassing fundraising and other pivotal strategic communications.

Alumni Relations In partnership with the Alumni Association, the ACO team actively establishes and maintains supportive, lifelong connections with alumni around the world. Through regular events and enriching programmes, the goal is to foster lasting sense of camaraderie among the alumni community and advance the Lasallian Catholic mission of the school.

GIVING TO SJI INTERNATIONAL Generosity and support are at the heart of the community at SJI International. As a non-profit institution, financial support is crucial to delivering the kind of outstanding education that our community values. We receive no government funding but are committed to offering high-quality education to all, through our Scholarship Fund and Building Fund. By supporting SJI International, parents, faculty, alumni, and members of our community demonstrate their belief in the school’s mission and vision, as well as the impact that these contributions, which go above and beyond tuition and fees, have on ensuring the long-term sustainability of our scholarship and building fund programmes. No matter how you choose to support the school; through annual giving, supporting our scholarship or building fund programmes, or leaving a legacy, your generosity will make a big difference. Consider giving today by making SJI International one of your philanthropic priorities, and invest in the future of our students! Scholarships and Bursaries Fund As a Lasallian School, SJI International strives to bring education to all – especially the last, the lost and the least. By donating to the Scholarships and Bursaries Fund, you empower the school to provide life-changing opportunities to promising students from families whose financial situation would otherwise make it impossible for them to access quality education. Although most of our Scholarships are offered to deserving Singaporean students, we have, over the years,

offered scholarships to students from Thailand, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, East Timor, Myanmar and the Philippines. As of 2022, we have offered over 270 scholarships worth approximately S$21 million in value. Building and Development Fund Your donations to the Building and Development Fund support campus improvements and maintenance and allow us to invest in future building and development to provide the best possible facilities and environment for our student’s education. The current lease for our campus has been extended by the government until 2030. Thereafter a likely relocation and the need for a new campus to be retrofitted/built. By contributing to the Building and Development Fund, you are contributing to empowering the lives of current students and the generations to come.
