SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME
The 2019 scholars at the Scholarship Awards Ceremony held on 31 January at the Glass Hall. St. Joseph’s Institution (SJI) International, founded in 2007, is a privately funded Catholic school. It was started by the De La Salle Brothers and alumni of SJI. SJI’s roots date back to 1852 as the third oldest secondary school in Singapore and has a longstanding reputation for offering a high quality holistic and balanced education that emphasises character formation and leadership development. Over its history, SJI has produced many leaders for the community in diverse sectors such as government, business, academia, church and the community. Our distinguished alumni include former President Tony Tan Keng Yam, Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean, DBS Chairman Peter Seah, Senior Counsel Davinder Singh and the Makan Sutra food critic KF Seetoh. These are leaders who have empathy and compassion and who can be effective bridges across races and religions. SJI International offers a holistic and balanced education that nurtures students to learn how to learn and to learn how to live, so that they can be people of integrity and people for others. The school prepares students for the 2-year International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) examinations. In the November 2014 examinations, 7 students achieved a perfect score of 45 points, 5 of whom were SJI International scholarship recipients. In 2015, the average IB score achieved by all SJI International students was 37.8 points. This impressive performance was repeated in 2016, when our 24 SJI International Scholarship recipients scored an average of 38.2 points, which was significantly higher than 2016’s global average of 29.2 points. Our Class of 2017 scholars, recorded an average of 41.7 points, with 87.5% of them attaining a score of 40 points or higher. The scholars from the most recent cohort, Class of 2018, recorded an average of 39 points which was significantly higher than 2018’s global average of 29.8 points. In its short history of 10 years of IBDP graduates, the school has students who have gone on to win various scholarships including the prestigious PSC (Public Service Commission) overseas merit scholarships, and to gain admission into top universities such as Harvard University, Stanford University, MIT, Yale University, Cambridge University and Oxford University. Graduates from SJI International have been accepted into some of the most competitive courses in Singapore universities, for example, Dentistry, Law and Medicine at the National University of Singapore.

SJI INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION THE LASALLIAN DIFFERENCE In addition to preparing our Scholars to do well academically for the IBDP examinations, they are offered a high quality education that allows them the opportunities to discover their interests and talents in a caring, respectful and inclusive community which strongly emphasises character and leadership development. As a Lasallian school, our scholars learn to have faith, whatever their faith tradition may be, i.e. to believe in themselves, in others, and in a God. Our scholars live out their faith by actively showing concern for those who are less fortunate in our society.
Recognised Qualification for University Studies The IB Diploma is a recognised qualification for admission into undergraduate programmes at local and international universities. The IBDP offers a broad-based education that prepares our scholars well for university studies. They will offer six subjects from six subject groups comprising two Languages, Sciences, Mathematics, Humanities and the Arts. They will also follow a Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course, complete an extended essay and participate in Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS).
Nurturing and Caring Teachers Our SJI International teachers are not only highly qualified but are also nurturing and caring. They take the time to get to know our Scholars as individuals. They adopt a child-centred and active learning approach to support our Scholars in their learning so that they can realise their full potential.
Holistic Development with Choice and Flexibility At SJI International, our Scholars get to choose their six subjects based on their interests and the university courses that they are planning to gain admission into. They will take 3 subjects at standard level and 3 subjects at higher level. Theory of Knowledge will help our scholars to integrate their learning and give them a strong foundation in ways of knowing in their respective subject disciplines. The extended essay is a 4000-word paper based on independent and self-directed research on a selected topic of interest or passion in one of the subject disciplines. The extended essay helps our Scholars to develop critical thinking, communication and research skills that will give them a head start in university studies. Our Scholars’ participation in CAS will help them to enhance their personal and interpersonal development through experiential learning. They will get to choose from a wide range of CAS activities and to even initiate their own CAS activities in consultation with the teachers.
Strong Service Learning Dimension As a Lasallian institution, our Scholars enter to learn and leave to serve. Our Scholars will have many opportunities to participate in service learning locally and in the region so that they can make a difference in the lives of others.
International Learning Environment Our Scholars will be learning in an international environment where they will have opportunities to interact and learn with fellow students from 40 different countries. This will allow our Scholars to develop cultural sensitivities which will give them an edge in their future work place. SJI International truly offers an international education for Singapore and PR Scholars in the safety and familiarity of home without the need to go overseas.
Lasallian Network In Singapore, SJI International is linked with 6 other Lasallian schools as part of the legacy of our founder, St John Baptist de La Salle. SJI International is part of a larger Lasallian network of approximately 900 schools in about 84 countries.

“The upside to a Lasallian education is that it prepares you both for further education (and holistically at that), and for things far beyond what text books and syllabi and marking rubrics and ten year series will ever prepare you for—life. The journey really did mean going down the road less taken—it was frightening, exhilarating and sometimes exhausting, but I came through it with lots of new skills and just as many new friends. I definitely couldn’t have done it without some great teachers and all the support of a great group of friends. I will always be thankful and indebted to both SJI International and the donors for such a formative experience, and can only hope to achieve as much as they have done to better the lot of others.”
“Thanks to the opportunities given to me at SJI International, I have since been able to pursue what I love and live a life full of adventures, travelling the world, learning new things, inspiring others and being inspired by them every day. It is no exaggeration when I say SJI International was a turning point of my life I am very thankful.”
“The SJI International scholarship has taught me that hard work and perseverance, though not always sufficient, play important roles, no matter the path chosen. For that I will always be immensely grateful to SJI International and the Board of Governors.”
“With exposure to an international environment and to the unknown, my experience at SJI International was one of fulfilment and enjoyment. Through service learning and opportunities for leadership, I sincerely hope that I have been able to be of benefit to SJI International even more than it has been to me. I thank the donors for both their immense generosity and for the opportunity to study and develop myself holistically at SJI International. Without that, I definitely would not have been able to experience and do so much for and with others. I entered SJI International with an open mind; I left with new eyes and an inspired heart. In truth I can never leave SJI International.”

“SJI International gave me vast opportunities to pursue my interests and develop them by offering a wide range of activities spanning the arts, sports and service. In addition to teaching me how to learn independently, it developed me as a person. SJI International has a wonderful student body from diverse backgrounds. Interacting with these students and forging strong bonds with them has surely broadened my perspective of the world. All this would not have happened had I not received a Scholarship from SJI International and I would like to sincerely thank the school for making this possible.”
“What I found unique about SJI International is its constant support for its students and its commitment to empower every individual. On behalf of the scholar cohort, I would also like to express my most sincere thanks to our donors for your kindness and support. We are thankful for your gifts and we promise to strive for the highest standard, epitomising the values of SJI International.”
“SJI International truly is an amazing school and there are many great aspects, but to me, the greatest aspect is the people. I am extremely grateful to my scholarship sponsor, Khoo Teck Puat Foundation, for sponsoring my two years of education in SJI International. If not for the scholarship, I would never have been able to experience such a wonderful school programme here and I wouldn’t have accomplished as much as I have today.”
“Coming to SJI International has given me the ammunition to find my footing and purpose in life and I am truly grateful to you for granting me this opportunity to learn and grow in this school. Even long after I leave, I know I will continue to hold SJI International close to my heart forever.”
