GRADING OVERVIEW
COLLEGE ADMISSIONS INFORMATION SJI INTERNATIONAL
SINGAPORE CONTEXT
• The language of instruction is English. • The academic year runs from January to December with students sitting November IGCSE and IB exams. The Class of 2022 will graduate on November 19 2022, with final IB results expected in early January 2023.
• All Singaporean Citizens and Permanent Residents must fulfil the Ministry of Education Mother Tongue Language Requirement. Hence a student’s choice of languages throughout High School is usually restricted. • Male Singaporean Citizens and Permanent Residents completing their compulsory two years of Singapore National Service are supported by the University Counsellors at SJI International through their university applications, including submitting all official high school documents and letters of recommendation. UNIVERSITY COUNSELLING POLICIES
GRADING OVERVIEW
• Final IGCSE grades by the Cambridge IGCSE are awarded on an A* to G scale; final IB grades by the IBO are awarded on a 1 - 7 scale with 7 being the highest. For the Class of 2022, school grades are awarded on a 1 - 7 scale and Theory of Knowledge is assessed on an A - E scale. • Physical Education and Religious Education are assessed on a Pass/Fail scale. • IB Predicted Grades are awarded in October, just before students sit for final examinations and graduate in November.
• Students are not ranked or awarded GPAs. • University Counsellors do not complete tick boxes on recommendation forms. • Disciplinary infractions resulting in a fixed term external exclusion are disclosed if requested. COVID-19 IMPACT
• In line with the Singapore Ministry of Education guidelines, SJI International was on Home Based Learning from March 26 to June 12, 2020 and from May 19 to June 11, 2021. • There were severe restrictions on activities, interaction and movement since early February 2020. Frequent changes to safe-distancing regulations led to difficulty in planning. Restrictions have eased significantly since April 2022. • All examination sessions have been held in person. • All school related student and staff travel ceased on February 3, 2020. Staff travel for conferences resumed in July 2022.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE ACADEMIC PROGRAMME Grade 9 and 10 (IGCSE Curriculum) All students follow the Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) curriculum and sit eight IGCSEs at the end of Grade 10; students who also take Additional Mathematics sit nine. With the exception of some language examinations which are only offered in the May sitting, all IGCSE examinations are taken in the same examination session. Grade 10 Foundation Course (FC) FC is a one-year course for students who join the school at the end of Grade 9 or the start of Grade 10 and cannot join the two year IGCSE programme. FC students may occasionally take one or two IGCSE examinations (usually Mathematics and/or Foreign Language); however this is not the norm. Grade 11 and 12 (IB Diploma) All students follow the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. The occasional student may complete Courses due to extenuating circumstances. In keeping with the four pillars of our programme, students are discouraged from taking four subjects at the Higher Level in the IB Diploma. Non-Singaporean students admitted on a scholarship are required to study their Home Language.
THE SERVICE LEARNING, CO-CURRICULAR LEARNING AND OUTDOOR EDUCATION PROGRAMMES (CLASS OF 2022) All students in Grades 9 - 12 engage in Service Learning, Co-Curricular Learning and Outdoor Education. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, these activities ceased on March 20 2020. Although interaction was severely restricted to allow for safe-distancing requirements and most activities were held virtually, a modified Service and Co-curricular activities programme resumed from September 14 2020. Most restrictions were lifted in April 2022. In Grade 11 and 12 service programmes are usually student-initiated and led. In 2020 and 2021 since direct interaction was not possible, service learning took place through means such as advocacy. In 2022 some service learning activities are being held virtually and some are face to face. •
•
Usually all students participate in challenging residential experiences overseas, culminating in Challenge Week in Grade 11, a student-planned, teacher-mentored project resulting in a week of independent activity, without teacher supervision, within South East Asia. However, while the Class of 2022 planned their trips through Grade 11, they were not able to implement them due to travel restrictions. An adapted version of Challenge Week took place online instead. All students in Grade 9 complete the National Youth Achievement Bronze Award. From Grade 10 onwards students can choose to continue to the Silver and Gold Awards. Since 2020 students working towards the Silver and Gold Awards did their expeditions in Singapore.

SAT/ACT TESTS
Standardised exams have always been a barrier and have caused a great deal of anxiety in our community. • As students sit their final IB examinations in November, there are no exam dates that fit seamlessly with the calendar. • In keeping with the four pillars of our programme, students are not encouraged to spend excessive amounts of time preparing for standardised exams. • The cancellations to the tests in Singapore in the past four years, as well as more recently because of the COVID-19 global pandemic, has added to the difficulties of accessing the standardised exams and have resulted in an increased level of anxiety and lack of confidence in the tests themselves amongst our student and parent communities. As a result, students will generally only take a standardised exam if required and universities should not expect a standardised exam result otherwise.
