We ve all heard of different myths from our grandparents parents and even friends well most of them are just spooky stories with a good moral teaching behind them not all of them though
So let's look at some common ones and point out the myths, sis!
There’s a myth that if you rub a mango seed on your face after eating an unripe mango, it’ll stop you from getting the mumps disease. But let me tell you,
That’s total cap! 1
It’s not true, so don’t go around smearing mango seeds on your face, sis. Just enjoy your mango, stay up to date on your vaccinations and keep it moving.
3
I heard a myth that says if you beat your friend with a broom, he/she will never bear children.
Baby girl,
That's just a myth!
to remind you that some things aren’t meant to be used for hitting someone, lol. But for real, don’t use violence to solve stuff, there are way better ways to handle things. Let’s keep it cool, okay?
They say a girl is not supposed to add salt in food while cooking when she's on her menstrual period or else the people who will eat that food cooked by her will suffer from a never ending cough. Well, let me tell you, my SKY sisters,
That's just a myth! 2
to get us to keep things clean when cooking. A lot of people use their hands to add stuff like salt, and it can get kinda unhygienic if you’re coming from using the bathroom. So, instead of stressing, let’s just keep it clean when we’re in the kitchen, okay? And remember, your period doesn’t make you gross or yucky just because your cycle has started. We got this!
4
Never leave a broom outside because a witch might come and use it to fly in the night to bewitch people. For this one SKY sisters,
it's just a way of reminding us to be tidy and put things in order. Not just leaving them anyhow especially outside(where anyone) can take them.
They say if you're in love with someone and you don't want to ever let them go, you make a covenant with them by mixing each other's blood on the thumb, but aweh!
That's just a myth! 5
It’s not worth the risk, besties. Messing around with stuff like that could expose you to diseases like HIV/AIDS through blood contact. If you really don’t wanna lose someone, it’s way better to get to know each other in real ways, not through sketchy, mythical stuff. Keep it real, babes.
6
Never share items like a broom or a chitenge (wrapper) because you might end up with similar period cramps as the person you shared with, or even worse.
This myth aims to teach us that not everything should be shared, especially sensitive stuff like clothing. Sharing these can lead to skin diseases and other issues, so it’s best to keep your things to yourself or at least wash things thoroughly. Stay smart, besties.
8
There’s a myth that states that if you’re passing through a graveyard and want to sit down, you have to ask, "Zikomo, ninkaleko?" which means "Sorry, can I sit here?" as a sign of respect. If you don’t, you’ll be haunted. But don’t worry,
7
When you’re walking alone and come across a dead body, throw a piece of your clothing on it and you’ll be safe. If you don’t, the spirit might follow you. As creepy as this sounds,
it's just a myth!
it’s just a myth. If you ever find yourself in that situation, the best thing to do is head to the nearest police station and report the sighting and then consider getting some counseling. You will be ok though, besties.
9
There’s a Zambian myth that says you’ll get a Kasonkhela (a small swollen bump under the eyelid) if you see an elderly person naked.
It’s not true.
10
There’s a myth that if you jump over a toddler, they’ll end up being short—unless you jump over them again to reverse it. But, for real, it’s just a myth
that tries to get us to respect the dead. Still, don’t sit in graveyards, besties, there are way better places to rest.
But that doesn’t mean you should be disrespectful sis. Respect the elderly’s privacy and everyone else too. Let’s keep it classy please!
That’s just a tall tale!
No need to go hopping over kids, besties. Let them grow at their own pace!
In the end myths are part of our culture passed down through generations to teach us lessons or keep us in check But it’s important to remember that not everything we hear is true While some myths carry messages about respect or hygiene others are just plain fiction So stay curious question what you hear and always look for the facts And most importantly let’s keep spreading respect and good vibes No myths needed for that

Dear Gracious, Hey girl!
by Gracious Kaoma
I know you’ve always waited for a sign or signal from the future. As I sit down to write this letter, I’m flooded with memories of our past and the journey that has led us to this point.
I want you to know that every step you’re taking, and every experience you’re having, is shaping the person you’ll become.
Years later, here we are, living a life that was once a dream, thriving in things that were only once a dream, where did time go? Oh! how time flies!
I know you’re probably looking at me right now with the biggest smile on your face and with so much excitement knowing that I overcame all insecurities, stayed true to myself and achieved at least a few of the many goals you planned.
Dear my 14-year-old self, how I wish you weren’t so hard on yourself, how I wish you loved every part of yourself and embraced even what was an insecurity at the time because years later, I have come to realize that you needed to go through that stage of your life, it was a building block to get you ready for the future.
As I write this letter, I wish I could take your hand and guide you through the journey ahead. But know that every step you take, every choice you make, will lead you to where I am now.
And though the path isn’t always easy, it’s uniquely yours, and it’s shaping you into someone you can be proud of. Believe in yourself, and trust your instincts, your journey is just beginning, and it’s filled with incredible experiences and opportunities.
Believe in yourself, embrace the challenges, and savor the moments of joy. You are stronger, braver, and more resilient than you can imagine.
Keep your heart open, and your mind curious, stay true to your values, and always remember that you are loved and supported. You’ll encounter setbacks and failures along the way, but please don’t let them define you. Every stumble is a chance to rise stronger and wiser. Be kind to yourself during these times. Treat yourself with the same compassion you would offer to a friend going through a tough time. Friendships will come and go, and that’s okay too.
Some people will be with you for a lifetime, while others will teach you valuable lessons in a short span. Cherish the connections you make, but don’t hold onto toxic relationships out of fear of being alone.
Surround yourself with people who uplift you.
GLOW UP AND BREAK FREE
Own Your Choices Start making your own decisions. It’s easy to go with the flow, but sometimes, you need to step up and decide what’s best for you. First, ask yourself what you really want. Whether it's deciding on your style, what hobbies to take up, or who to hang out with, make sure your choices reflect your true self. Remember, it's okay to say no to things that don’t vibe with who you are.
Hey, SKY Girl!
Ever feel like you’re stuck doing things because everyone else is doing them? It’s time to break free and claim your independence! Now is the perfect time to explore who you are and make choices that truly reflect YOU!
Handle Stress Like a Boss Whether it’s school drama, family expectations, or peer pressure, stress can weigh you down. Try simple things like journaling or practicing deep breathing. When you feel in control of your stress, you can focus more on what makes you happy.
Set Your Own Goals Think about what you really want to achieve. Whether it’s getting better grades, learning a new skill, or just being kinder to yourself; set goals that make you feel proud. Write them down, break them into small steps, and tackle them one by one. Celebrate each little win—it’s all progress!
Staying motivated can be tough, especially when things don’t go as planned. But remember, every small step counts. Celebrate your little wins, and don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Your journey is unique. Don’t compare yourself to others. Stay motivated by reminding yourself that you’re doing this for YOU. Keep moving forward, and don’t be afraid to shine.
So, go ahead and glow up! Break free and let the world see the amazing person you’re becoming!

RAEWYN MENAHIL
This year has been huge for our alumna, Raewyn, who now hosts her own show on Lusaka’s 97.7 FM! She calls being a radio host and even hosting the SKY Festival "a dream come true" for her younger self. Meeting celebs and hearing their stories has been a highlight, but having her own signature stinger on air? That’s the real win. SKY Girls played a big role in her journey from shy girl to confident radio host!
Her advice to anyone chasing their dreams? “The world can be cruel and take everything from you, but it can’t take your dreams. Hold onto them with all your heart, and never give up!”
ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
NICOLA TEMBO
Nicola Tembo's journey with SKY Girls has been all about finding her voice and speaking up on big issues like women’s rights. Inspired by a powerful spoken word performance, she and a friend performed their own poem that moved people, even though she was super nervous at first. SKY gave her the confidence to connect with others and explore her creative side, helping her grow through positive vibes and support. Nicola’s biggest tip? "Confidence is a skill, bestie! Keep practicing, and don’t be afraid of constructive criticism. Just remember, real feedback will lift you up, not tear you down."

SKY has been a huge part of my life ever since I became a SKY Girl! And what I love most about this community is how much I get to learn through the SKY magazines, the Stay True show, and their social media, it’s like a whole education vibe!
I see freedom as the ability to express my true self without fear or judgement.
I was honestly so shook when I found out I won the cover girl competition because I enter every single one, and this time, I actually won! The photoshoot was unreal. Even though I was super nervous, everyone showed me so much love, and it gave me a huge confidence boost!

When I found out I won the cover girl competition, I was over the moon! I couldn't believe it because I've been trying for so long and almost gave up, but I pushed myself to give it one more shot. I’m so glad I did! My parents have been supporting me the whole way, and being a cover girl is something I know will make them proud.
To me, freedom means being able to make choices about my own life, body, and future without society's pressure or limits, and feeling safe in my own skin.
Hi, SKY Family! I want to wish a very happy SKY Girls Day on this 4th of May, marking 4 incredible years of greatness. SKY Girls Day is important to me for many reasons.
First, empowerment - this community is full of strong, independent women who overcome challenges and push beyond their limits.
Second, inspiration - it motivates me to chase my goals and never give up on my dreams.
Third, self-discovery - being part of this community has helped me figure out what’s truly my thing and what’s not. And finally, friendship - the kind of friendships I’ve found here are real and true. Thank you, SKY Girls, for all the magic!

My experience with SKY has been amazing! I love how they’re always non-judgy and super friendly, even when they respond on socials. When I saw my name on the winners list, I couldn’t believe it and it felt like I was dreaming or something! I’ve always wanted to be on the cover of the SKY Girls Zed magazine, so this was a dream come true.
SKY has taught me to stay true to myself, boosted my confidence, and helped me own my self-esteem. Freedom to me means being able to act, speak, and think however I want without anyone stopping me. The shoot was everything; the vibe, the energy, just *chef’s kiss*! I had the best time!

From SKYFest, I learned to love myself more because I’m strong and shouldn’t let little things get me down. I realized I can be myself and it’s totally okay—I don’t need to please anyone. Being a SKY Girl has taught me so much and inspired me a lot. For example, my fave actor right now is @Thulani Nkhoma because he’s just himself and that’s motivating me to try acting too. I’m still working on it, but I’m so grateful for everything! Thank you, SKY Girls Zambia, for an amazing experience!

SKY FEST
Is it okay to avoid your best friend just because you’ve started having feelings for him?
SKY GIRL 1: No, it’s not. Distancing yourself from him will only prevent your relationship from growing stronger. @jemmah._x
SKY GIRL 2: Nah, that would be awkward and make it obvious that you like him. Just keep it cool until those feelings pass. @mwale4996
AUNTY B: It’s definitely tricky when feelings for a friend start to change. Avoiding him might feel like the easiest option, but it can also hurt your friendship. Try to think about why you want to avoid him—is it because you’re confused or scared of rejection? Sometimes being open and honest about your feelings can clear the air, but if you’re not ready for that, give yourself some space to figure things out. Just make sure it’s temporary and doesn’t hurt your friendship in the long run. @innersafariquest_isq
My hair is really troubling me, should I cut it or try to maintain it?
SKY GIRL 1: It's better to maintain your hair by plaiting it, but cutting it can also help it grow healthier. I cut mine last year. @marthabwacha
SKY GIRL 2: Cut it and start afresh, sis. Nothing’s better than a new start! @_.faiiiii._n
AUNTY B: Girl, hair struggles are so real! The first thing to think about is what you want. If your hair is stressing you out and takes too much time to maintain, a fresh cut might be just what you need for a new, low-maintenance vibe. But if you love your length and just need a little help managing it, try experimenting with protective styles or visit a local salon for advice on caring for your hair type. Think of it like this: whether you cut it or maintain it, make sure you're doing what makes you feel confident and comfortable. @innersafariquest_isq
I love my boyfriend so much but he suddenly got a new girlfriend and ghosted me. What should I do?
SKY GIRL 1: Do your best to move on. He’s not worth your love and time, sis! @nah_tah_sha_570
SKY GIRL 2: He doesn’t value you. Take some time for yourself and focus on activities that bring you happiness, while staying true to who you are. @mimikabwe
AUNTY B: I’m so sorry that happened to you, and I know it hurts right now. Ghosting is never okay, especially after a relationship, but it’s a clear sign that he wasn’t treating you with the respect you deserve. As hard as it is, try to focus on you right now. Spend time with friends, do things that make you happy, and remember that love is about mutual respect and care. It’s okay to feel sad, but don’t let his actions define your worth. You deserve someone who values and cherishes you—don’t settle for less. @innersafariquest_isq
How can you move on from something that destroyed everything about you?
AUNTY B: I hear you, and it sounds like you’ve been through a lot. Moving on after something really painful can feel impossible, but one step at a time, you can heal. Start by allowing yourself to feel the pain—it’s okay to be sad or angry. Then, find small things that bring joy into your life, like hanging out with friends, journaling, or focusing on hobbies. Surround yourself with people who lift you up, and remember, healing doesn’t happen overnight. Think of it as building a house brick by brick—you’re putting yourself back together, stronger than ever before. You've got this. @innersafariquest_isq
My parents have told me to stop hanging out with my childhood friend, and even though we’re really close, she’s becoming a bad influence on me. I don’t want to stop hanging out with her, so what should I do?
AUNTY B: It’s tough when your childhood friend isn’t making the best choices, but deep down you know your parents want the best for you. Ask yourself, “Is she helping me become the best version of myself?” If the answer is no, it might be time to take a step back. You don’t have to completely cut her off, but maybe spend less time together and set boundaries for yourself. You can still care about her without letting her choices bring you down. It’s okay to grow in different directions while protecting your own future. @innersafariquest_isq
