Hey SKY babes

Happy Holidays

It's your girl, the one and only Leilla.

Every issue is made with you in mind and crafted just for you. But this issue is truly made for you because you suggested all the content — it’s packed with everything you asked for at SKYFest!

This holiday, let’s think about the future we want, the dreams we have, and all the ways we’ll make 2025 our best year yet.

It’s a wrap for 2024, and as we cross our fingers for 2025, it’s the perfect time to set those goals and be real about what we want for ourselves. I know I’m all about that future focus: thinking about the big dreams but also the small things I want to achieve and stick to.

This new year, I’m focusing on my goals: staying true to my dreams, being unapologetically me, and planning for the future. So while we’re at it, I’ve got a couple of fun and festive ideas to keep you busy and glowing over the holidays, SKY fam!

If you’re like me — a total sweet tooth and a baking queen — check out pages 22&23 for some yummy Festive Churros (AHH! My mouth is already watering). And with load-shedding, it’s easy to make them on the mbaula too! Speaking of sweet things, don’t miss pages 8 and 9 for some festive fits if you want to look cute, demure, and super mindful of your vibe.

Oh, and can we talk about the new season of Tikula? I can’t believe season 3 is finally here! I had such a blast at the premiere last month, meeting the cast and just soaking up the Tikula energy. They’re such a fun crew, and getting to know them made me love Tikula even more. I hope you’re watching it on either our YouTube channel or ZNBC TV2! Tell me what you’re loving so far!

And guess what, sis? Cicely-Faith, who plays Toni, one of the main characters in Tikula S3, wrote a letter to her older self, and it’s as amazing as you’d expect! Don’t miss her heart-to-heart on page 12.

Is it just me, or does it feel like there’s nothing to do when the power goes out? I get so bored, and it can get a bit lonely. But I’ve got a quick solution for you! Not spoiling too much, but if you want to know more, check “Lights Out, Fun On” on page 24 for tips to keep the fun going, even in the dark.

And babes, here’s the real talk for 2025: let’s leave the negative energy behind. This year, I’m so committed to being intentional and sticking to the things that make me feel my best, ’cause no dream is too big or small, and the SKY’s the limit! So, let’s stay true to ourselves and share the festive fever with all our friends and family.

And SKY Girls Zed will be starting the new year with a bang: releasing a new SKY anthem — remember, you heard it here first!

With love from Leilla <3

What’s up SKY familia!?

We asked you who the star of the year should be, and you answered! As the year wraps up, we’re shining a spotlight on our Star of the Year – none other than our amazing SKY sister, Stay True host, eco-feminist, all-round activist and trail blazer, Susy Thomas! You all had questions to ask her so we put them to her. We hope her unique personality and the way she navigates life inspires and motivates you!

@marinakis786: Who are your role models?

Susy: Nelson Mandela and Zendaya.

@_talexisss_100: How can other people become advocates like you?

Susy: Advocacy is like school in a different font. Do your research, ask, and don’t be afraid to speak out for what’s right.

@certified_.delulu_: How do you stay strong in your faith and trust in God?

Susy: My parents instilled strong values in me, and I stand by them, even when faced with challenges.

@ms.adesiii_: How do you balance your social life with your academics?

Susy: Balancing isn’t hard if you’re passionate and have goals in life, knowing what you want to achieve. Prioritising and time management are key!

@sakalag12: What keeps you going despite all the hate out there?

Susy: My roots keep me going. I started with nothing, worked hard on my advocacy and grew my platform on Instagram. My journey to becoming an activist in Zambia fuels my drive.

@iluv_zipporah: How did you achieve so much at such a young age?

Susy: Self-belief! I always pushed myself and embraced new experiences. Don’t be afraid to go for your dreams.

@kuunda_joanna: How did you build your confidence, and what tips do you have for girls who want to be more confident?

Susy: Love and accept yourself! Embrace your true self and your flaws, and confidence will follow.

@bu._.pe: What worries you most about being one of Zambia’s youngest girls’ rights activists?

Susy: It’s not easy, especially when speaking out for girls’ rights in contexts where not everyone agrees. But I’m not fazed!

@_datgurl.shanies:

How do you deal with all the criticism?

Susy: I turn negative criticism into motivation. It can hurt, but I don’t let it define me. When you stay true to yourself, the criticism doesn’t matter because you know what you want and why you’re doing what you’re doing. Not everyone will understand or agree with my choices, and that’s fine. I can accept feedback, but I won’t let negative voices or peer pressure make me question who I am. As long as I’m staying true to myself, I know I’m on the right path.

@iamtemwani: How did you become part of the UNICEF community?

Susy: They reached out to me! To join, keep an eye on their platforms for application opportunities. But I was an activist before they reached out, and of course, my work with SKY Girls and other platforms helped to grow my brand. This ultimately helped me get noticed by organisations such as UNICEF. So, don’t be afraid to get involved in things that you’re passionate about and that will grow you.

@linny8316: What challenges have you faced because of your fame, and how have those affected you mentally? How did you overcome them?

Susy: I’ve faced challenges like finding genuine friends and battling depression. But God blessed me with supportive friends who helped me through.

@chimwemwe519:

What makes your identity unique?

Susy: My uniqueness comes from my ability to find beauty in the little things, my kindness and my big heart. And because I focus on staying true to who I am, I don’t have to follow trends or do as others do, but rather focus on what makes me me and what makes me happy.

‘SKY Girls Zed has helped me get out of my comfort zone and be more confident. Because of SKY — I learnt that being yourself and staying true to oneself is the best thing ever! I learnt to embrace my race, skin, hair texture and imperfections. SKY will always be a part of me!’ - Susy Thomas.

Remember, the STAR is chosen by you, and you get to share what you want to ask them! Let us know through our socials who you would like us to feature in the mag — we’d love to hear from you and keep the convo going!

Beautiful BeautifulMinds, You

This issue of Body Beautiful we wanted to do something different. Today, there is pressure, whether in real life or on social media or TV, to meet certain, maybe even unrealistic, beauty standards. This and other pressures can make you feel self-conscious or even inadequate, which can increase feelings of anxiety. But caring for our minds is just as important as taking care of how we look physically. Complete care of one’s self is what makes us uniquely beautiful, so we’re sharing SKY Girl Daisy’s story of overcoming anxiety.

My Anxiety Story

Firstly, everybody understands anxiety differently, but what exactly is anxiety? From my understanding, anxiety is a type of mental health condition that makes one respond to situations with fear and dread.

Growing up, I was never scared of anything, I was always the confident and active girl in the group and I never used to shy away from anything. Awesome right!?

When I hit my teenage years, things were okay—until 2019. I was 15 then, and that’s when everything started going downhill. It began with just feeling indecisive, but soon turned into this surge of fear whenever I wanted to say or do something, especially in front of people. I felt so confused.

I started having a hard time presenting in class because I’d randomly start shaking and sweating, with my heart pounding like crazy. I had no clue what was happening. I thought it was just a phase that’d disappear after my G9 exams, but nah, bruh…it followed me right into secondary school! Yoh! That’s when it really got worse.

I didn’t feel like myself anymore; I was just stuck in my head. Things kept getting so bad that I wanted to give up and just wallow in my misery, like, “Iyeeehh, pa chepa pano!”

But that’s not me. Giving up isn’t my thing. So, I decided to take action and get better!

I didn’t want to live in fear anymore, so I started researching how I could make it stop and actually be okay again. And I did find what I was looking for! Here are some tips on anxiety that really helped me.

Dealing with anxiety isn’t easy, so talk to someone; a friend, family member, or even a counselor. It can make a big difference. For me, getting better took a serious shift from negative thinking to positive, and it wasn’t easy. I used affirmations (found some in SKY magazines too!), Bible verses, prayers and some healthy habits.

One of my favorite affirmations was, “If I keep my mind clear, no fear will appear.” It took time, but I got there. I did things like dyeing my hair after high school, taking myself on solo dates, buying glasses I loved, socializing more, distracting myself with shows like Tikula and Stay True, books, or cooking, and even writing myself a love letter!

Something that pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me get out of my head was attending the editorial meetings as a SKY junior writer. I got to connect with my fellow junior writers and just enjoy socializing!

Recognizing the Signs of Anxiety:

Sis, anxiety can sneak up on you, but here’s what to watch for:

1 Feeling nervous or on edge all the time

2 That feeling like something bad’s gonna happen, even when there’s no reason to think it

3 Racing heart or sweating, even when you're not doing anything

4 Struggling to focus or thinking in circles

5 Avoiding things or people because they stress you out

Yes that ’ s right! Anxiety is bookie right?

How to Deal with Anxiety:

Bestie, anxiety might feel like it’s taking over, but you got this! Here’s how to handle it:

1 Take a breather, sis! Deep breathing or a little mindfulness can help you calm down

2 Don’t keep it in! Talk to someone you trust, like your bestie or fam.

3 Do something that relaxes you, like watching your fav show or listening to music.

4 Don’t smoke. Tobacco in cigarettes, nsunko, shisha, and vapes has nicotine that can cause you an addiction that can add to your anxiety as well as altering your mood.

5 Move your body, even if it's just a quick walk, it helps clear your mind. Get enough sleep and eat foods that actually make you feel good.

MyThing NOT Smoking Shallow Minded People Negativity

If things feel heavy, don’t keep it all to yourself, SKY babes, you can always reach out for help. Call Childline at 116 for free, confidential support, girlies! Either way, remember, you got this SKY babe!

Letter to FutureMySelf

Dear Future Cicely-Faith,

Shebele

Hey! I hope you’re thriving and living your dream life. Right now, at 18, I’m still figuring out some things, but I know one thing for sure – I want us to live a life we’re proud of.

I imagine you’ve built a career you’re passionate about. Maybe you're making waves in the film industry, directing powerful stories or acting in roles that matter. If that’s where you are, I hope you’ve kept pushing boundaries, learning new skills and taking the same kind of risks that brought you here. If that’s not what you chose, I hope you explored different paths to figure out where your heart truly lies. Whatever you're doing, I hope it’s something you wake up excited about, girl!

I know anxiety is part of the journey, but I also know you’ve learned how to manage it. You’ve found tools, leaned on your support system, and stayed true to your faith. Speaking of support systems, I hope you’ve surrounded yourself with people who challenge you to grow, inspire you to dream bigger, and celebrate your wins, big or small.

Right now, I’m working on things I know will shape our future: building confidence, honing my craft, and saying no to distractions that don’t align with our goals. I want to remind you to keep investing in yourself. Keep reading, learning, and perfecting your skills. Celebrate the wins but stay hungry for the next level.

Oh, and don’t forget to make time for yourself! Self-care isn’t just a buzzword – it’s a lifeline. Take those mental health days, journal your thoughts, and don’t hesitate to ask for help when you need it.

Lastly, keep God at the center of it all. His plan for us is greater than anything we could ever imagine. Keep believing, keep shining, and never forget where you came from. 18-Year-Old Cicely-Faith With so much love and pride,

New You:

Set Your 2025 Goals with SKY! New Year,

Hi hi hi, SKY Girlies! 2025 is almost here!

As we get ready to enjoy the New Year Festivals, why not think about making a few fun resolutions? Resolutions are about setting goals and at SKY, we are all about setting goals and believing in them! These resolutions aren’t just dreams, bestie, they’re all about leveling up and growing into the best version of yourself. If you use the right tips and tools, your goals can go from “I wish” to “I did that!” And remember, resolutions aren’t just about changing, they’re also about celebrating YOU!

So, here are some resolutions for every SKY girlie! And guess what? You can write down your own top 5 goals for 2025 that you can go back to every day, so it reminds you to keep working toward the things you’re most excited about in the new year!

Own my choices: I’ll make at least three decisions this year that reflect what I truly want, not what others expect.

Say ‘no’ like a boss: I’ll confidently say no to things that don’t feel right for me whenever I need to.

Stay true to me, even when it’s hard: I’ll choose what’s best for me in every situation where I feel pressured by friends.

Open up about my feelings: I’ll have at least one honest conversation each month about how I’m feeling.

Handle my business like a pro: I’ll solve my own challenges this year by breaking it into steps and tackling them one at a time. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 1 0

It’s amazing what setting goals can do. Those little steps you take today can lead to big changes tomorrow. So, let’s get ready to slay 2025 with confidence, growth, and all the good vibes. Happy Holidays, SKY Fam!

a total data queen

Meet Pendo Manjele making waves in tech

With five years experience in the banking sector, she’s turning data into gold. Pendo is currently a Data Analytics Senior Specialist at Zanaco. A Copperbelt University grad, she’s now leveling up with a Master’s in Applied Statistics.

Starting as a Software Engineer, Pendo is now a certified Data Analyst and co-founder of the Meta Developer Circle, all while championing girls in tech. She received the 2023 ICT Award at the PUSH women Awards too! Talk about being a boss babe!

A data scientist is like a detective for information! They look at lots of data to find patterns, solve problems, and help people make smart decisions. Pendo is here to inspire others to slay in the tech game!

Analytical thinking Experimentation Problem Solving Her

Micro-Management Monotonous Tasks

What made you fall in love with data science? Was there like, a moment when you knew this was it?

Pendo: I actually started in software development, which felt pretty tucked away in IT. We’d work on a project, finish it, and usually never get to see how it really helped anyone. But I’ve always been into tech and solving real problems, and data science lets me bring all of that together. There wasn’t a single “aha!” moment, but a bunch of experiences that got me here. And I’m still on the journey, nowhere near done, but super excited to keep going.

Any favorite high school subjects that helped you get into tech?

Pendo: Math and Computer Science! And honestly, Computer Science was just us messing around with computers, not even a real exam subject. It was a break from all the usual school stuff, and I loved it.

What degrees or certifications helped you get into data science?

Pendo: My tech background as a software engineer was a big plus, and I picked up certifications in data science, too, which gave me the skills I needed to stand out.

What’s one cool skill every future data scientist should have?

Pendo: Definitely gotta have programming skills, critical thinking, problem-solving, and a bit of business strategy. It’s all about balancing the science with a little strategy.

Got a life motto that gets you through rough days?

Pendo: “Girl, you’ve got this!”

What’s the toughest challenge you faced as a woman in tech? How’d you handle it like a boss?

Pendo: Being in a field mostly full of men, I sometimes got “easier” tasks just because of bias. Like they thought they were doing me a favor, but it was actually holding me back. I talked it over with my boss, and that really helped open his eyes to how this stuff can hurt career growth.

What advice do you wish someone gave you when you were a tech-loving teen?

Pendo: Don’t be afraid to explore and take risks. There’s a ton of ways to build a career in tech, so just go for it!

How can girls build a support squad in tech? And why’s that important?

Pendo: A support system is huge! Having a squad of other girls and even some guy allies who “get it” helps when things get tough. Plus, mentors can give you insider tips and tricks. It’s all about having people to lean on who know the path.

Where could you work as a data scientist?

Pendo: Basically anywhere that uses data to do cool, new things.

Got any must-read books or websites for girls wanting to dive into data science?

Pendo:

Books: “Storytelling with Data” (super helpful for learning to share data visually) and Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg (not data science but amazing for women in tech).

Websites: Towards Data Science (has tons of tutorials and articles) and DataCamp (great interactive courses).

Ama Savings Jars na purpose

Take empty jars, label each one with a small goal (like “Books,” “Snacks,” or “School Stuff”) and add any spare cash you have. Every Kwacha you add gets you closer to your goal and shows that even the small things can lead to something big. Watching your jars fill up is actually pretty motivating.

Try the Pomodoro Hack

This trick helps you stay focused on your goals without feeling stressed. Pick a task (maybe reading, budgeting your airtime, or studying something new), set a timer for 25 minutes, and focus only on that task. Then take a 5-minute break. This makes tasks less stressful and keeps your energy up.

Wassup, SKY girlies! I’m Luyando Mwiinga, I’ll be studying Medicine from Eden University starting next year, and I’m 18 years old. When I found out I’d won, I was over the moon! I worked so hard for it; I even got my classmates to vote for me by following the SKY page and liking my comment. When I won, they were just as excited as I was!

During the shoot, I had the chance to meet Mukuka GG and some of the Tikula Season 3 cast who stopped by. I even asked Mukuka to sing for me, but she had a sore throat, so she couldn’t. (Next time, fingers crossed!) The whole experience was amazing; meeting everyone there was beautiful. SKY is such a friendly and supportive space to be in. In 2025, I’m determined to restart my cake-baking business and work extra hard at school.

I m leaving behind all the bad vibes and tough moments of the negative energy people bring and the spirit of laziness

Hi, hi, SKY Sistas! My name is Angel, and I’m 16 years old and I’m in my 12th grade at Lusaka Girls. Being this issue’s cover girl is one of the most amazing things that has happened to me this year! When I saw on Facebook that I’d won, I was so excited…and honestly, a little confused because I didn’t even have a Facebook account before. I created one just to participate in the challenge, and to my surprise, I won! (I’m definitely keeping the account now so I can follow the SKY Girls Zed page and check out more opportunities.)

The shoot experience was thrilling—total princess treatment from everyone! The junior writer and director were so welcoming and made us feel right at home. The makeup was amazing, and I loved looking pretty with it on. In 2025, I look forward to the end of load-shedding (seriously, it’s too much!) and grabbing more opportunities. I’m also working on my singing and songwriting career; one of my dreams is to be featured in a song with Mukuka GG (she plays Nessa in Tikula)! Plus, I’m going back to being a gymnast because I refuse to be stagnant in 2025.

The thought of making churros at home may make you nervous but it is honestly so easy and worth it! With the ingredients you find in your kitchen, this comfort food can boost your Christmas parties or your chilly home nights, in just 20 minutes.

INGREDIENTS

1 cup butter

1 cup flour

1 cup water

1 tablespoon sugar (feel free to add more for sweetness)

2 large eggs

1 tablespoon vanilla essence

Mixture of cinnamon and sugar: 1 tablespoon white sugar and ½ teaspoon cinnamon Oil for frying

How to make Churros:

Then add the vanilla essence.

Beat in the eggs one at a time.

Heat oil in a pan and transfer the dough to a piping bag. (If you don’t have a piping bag, use a plastic bag by snipping a small hole in one corner and squeezing the dough out through it.)

When the oil is hot, squeeze the dough into the hot oil, cutting with kitchen scissors to your desired size (You could get somebody to help you with this part, sis, don’t risk getting burned).

Fry until golden brown, then remove.

Coat in the sugar-cinnamon mixture while hot.

Optional drizzle with melted chocolate and add sprinkles!

Treat your family, friends or just yourself to Churros this festive season! Tag us in your pictures of them, when you make them!

SKY ADVICE

SKY ADVICE SKY ADVICE

Hey SKY fam!

Welcome to SKY Advice, your go-to space for sharing and getting real advice. We’re bringing you questions straight from the SKY community, about friendships, relationships, school, and more. Our SKY sisters will give their take, and then Aunty-B will drop her wisdom from a big-sis perspective. Let’s help each other out!

How long should the talking stage last?

SKY GIRL 1: 1-2 months, just enough time to vibe and get to know each other on a deeper level. @talexisss_100

SKY GIRL 2: I think it depends, honestly. If it takes 4 months, no worries! Love takes time, so just go with the flow and get to know each other. @tukwiza._

AUNTY B: The talking stage has no set timeline—but both SKY Girls are right, it’s about how comfortable you both feel. Take your time and don’t rush; it’s about building a real connection. If it feels forced or you’re confused for too long, it might be time to move on. Trust your instincts. @innersafariquest_isq

Does true love exist?

SKY GIRL 1: 100%, true love is real! It’s all about being patient and waiting for the right person at the right time. @bandaangel542

SKY GIRL 2: Yaaas, true love is totally a thing. God is love, and He’s got it all planned for you. @iamsusythomas

AUNTY B: Yes, true love does exist, but it doesn’t always look like the fairy tales. It’s about respect, trust, and genuinely caring for each other’s well-being. True love takes time to build, and it’s not always perfect—it has its ups and downs. Before looking for true love with someone else, focus on loving yourself first. When you truly love yourself, you attract people who will love you for who you are. Both platonic and romantic. @innersafariquest_isq

My friends bully me for being tall, what can I do?

SKY GIRL 1: They’re NOT your friends, sis! Friends don’t bring you down, they hype you up. Tell them to knock it off, and if they don’t, bounce. @exotic_palo.joy

SKY GIRL 2: Talk to them fam. Real friends will get it and stop. If they don’t, maybe rethink that friendship. @hearts.from_alice

AUNTY B: I know it’s hard when people make you feel different, but remember: being tall is a gift! Many people would love to have your height. The next time they make fun of you, stand tall (literally!) and own it. Let them know that their comments don’t define you. You can also try talking to them about how their words make you feel. As both the SKY Girls said, real friends will listen and stop once they realize it’s hurtful. Embrace your height—models and athletes get celebrated for it! @innersafariquest_isq

What are some study methods I can use for school?

SKY GIRL 1: First, skim your notes, then write down the things you remember. It'll help you understand better! @cindy._xo5

SKY GIRL 2: Girl, check out the study tips in Issue 25 of the mag! It’s lit. @lusubilo_06

AUNTY B: I know studying can feel overwhelming at times, and everyone learns differently. Don’t worry if one method doesn’t work for you—try a few and see what feels right. Here are some ideas to get you started: Pomodoro Technique: Study for 25 minutes, then take a 5-minute break. It helps you stay focused and avoid burnout.

Flashcards: Perfect for memorizing facts, formulas, or vocabulary.

Active Recall: Test yourself instead of just reading your notes. It’s a great way to strengthen your memory. Teach Someone/ Form a Study Group: Explaining the material to a friend or sibling can help you understand it better.

Mind Maps: Draw diagrams to connect ideas visually—it’s a fun way to organize your thoughts.

Give these a try, and don’t be afraid to switch it up until you find what works best for you! As @lusubilo_06 said, find more in issue 25 of the magazine (get it from the SKY Hub or read it online) @innersafariquest_isq

What do I do when I love someone but this person is constantly cheating and lying to me?

SKY GIRL 1: Know your worth, babe! If they’re playing you, walk away. You deserve someone who’s real with you. @talexisss_100

SKY GIRL 2: Don't let someone take advantage of your love. Respect yourself and leave that mess behind! @ms_minamin

AUNTY B: This is really painful, and I’m sorry you’re dealing with this. Loving someone who isn’t honest or loyal can be heartbreaking but as the SKY Girls said, remember that you deserve to be with someone who respects you. It’s hard to let go, but staying in a relationship like this can hurt you even more in the long run. Choose yourself—walk away and give your heart time to heal. You deserve someone who will love you without lies. @innersafariquest_isq

I am in a relationship with my best friend’s crush and I don’t know what to do. Should I tell her?

SKY GIRL 1: Be real with her, sis. Tell her the truth and ask for forgiveness. Keep it 100. @princessmendai's

SKY GIRL 2: Honesty is the best policy, babe. She’ll respect you more if you tell her first. @nelly.mudenda

AUNTY B: This is a tricky situation. You need to be honest with your best friend and let her know what’s going on before she hears it from someone else. It’s okay if feelings got complicated, but your friendship is important too. Be open and give her space to share how she feels. She may need time, and that’s okay. Whatever happens, be kind and respectful, and remember that communication is key in both friendships and relationships. @innersafariquest_isq

What if your boyfriend wants to have sex but you are not ready? What should I do?

SKY GIRL 1: Tell him you're not ready, and see if he’s willing to wait. It’s all about mutual respect. @haruma_emmanuella

SKY GIRL 2: Don’t ever let someone pressure you, babe! Stand your ground and know your limits. You got this. @ndanji_jane

AUNTY B: Your body, your choice—don’t let anyone pressure you. Be honest and clear about your feelings. A healthy relationship is built on respect, so if he truly cares about you, he will understand and wait. Also, remember that the legal age of consent in Zambia is 16. If you’re under 16, it’s against the law. Your safety and well-being are the most important. You have every right to say no until you feel ready. You deserve to feel safe, respected, and loved.

@innersafariquest_isq

How can I stop comparing myself to other girls, thinking that they are prettier than me?

SKY GIRL 1: Confidence is key! Your body is YOUR body, and no one can take that away. Think positive and be proud of YOU. @natasha18052009

SKY GIRL 2: Girl, you gotta love yourself. Look in the mirror and remind yourself you're beautiful. Always! @exotic_palojoy

AUNTY B: It’s so easy to compare yourself to other girls, whether it’s in person or online, but remember comparison is the thief of joy. Social media can make it seem like everyone else is perfect, but real life isn’t filtered. When you find yourself comparing, take a moment to appreciate what’s unique about you. Write down things you love about yourself—like your sense of humor, creativity, or smile. Beauty isn’t just about looks; it’s about the kind person you are inside. Embrace your individuality—there’s only one you, and that’s your true superpower.
