SKY ADVICE 35

We want to hear from you!

Hey y'all! By Daisy Chulu

Winter is finally over, and I hope as it gets warmer we’ll begin to see the end of the ‘rona. We’ve had a lot to

deal with, schools closed again and we mourned the deaths of our first president and founding father Dr. Kenneth Kaunda and our first female chief justice Mrs Ireen Mambilima. But despite all this, I chose to be as positive as I could be and reminded myself that all will be well!

I took up a new hobby. I decided that in my free time when I am not studying, I will try to do something new, so I tried drawing. At first it was hard - I made a lot of mistakes and I almost gave up, but I am not a quitter. I kept practicing more and I am getting quite good at it. There are so many ways you can be creative apart from drawing and luckily, SKY has got you covered with that because this issue is about CREATIVITY! That's right, being creative. Yay!

Being creative means believing in yourself to create something from nothing, and it also means learning how to express yourself. That is something that can be

difficult for us teen girls and especially for shy girls, but I truly believe that we all have the capacity to express ourselves whether that is through our art, or to express our personalities to other people. Creative expression comes in different ways. For example, you don't need to paint the Mona Lisa or make a diamond necklace, just take baby steps. Vincent Van Gogh, the famous artist, once said "Great things are done by a series of small things brought together". Creativity takes time, patience and courage to achieve what you want. This issue has so many interesting

things that will help you discover your artistic side or creative side, like how to make a chitenge covered notebook (step by step) and tips on how you can use creativity as a stress reliever.

How many times have you told yourself you couldn't do something? I know I have done this to myself. Here is a

message to all of us. STOP! Because "it's not who you are that holds you back, it's who you think you're not." So if you have an idea, go for it. If you want something, ask. This one I keep as an inspiration when I have any self doubt. In this issue’s ‘Sporty Girls Matter’, we profile superstar swimmer Mia Phiri, the amazing swimmer who has won over 30 medals at only 18 years old. WOW! Amazing right?

So whenever you're bored, do something creative. Each day is a gift and a beginning to do something new. Challenge yourself, push yourself, and express yourself! I hope you're as psyched as I am about issue 6 - as always we have so much content that talks about everything that you love! Whenever I am stressed, I listen to music or draw. I would also like to know how you use creativity to beat stress or anxiety. Show us how YOU express yourself on our

socials! @skygirlszed

Love

Hey SKY girl! New season, new look, new style. My thing is definitely fashion, but you don’t have to break the bank to look fabulous and on trend, because you can use pieces you already have in your closet that are similar without having to spend much money. Grab that outfit of your choice and let’s get styling!

Afropunk A cropped backless chitenge top with colours that are popping for an afro punk look with some mom jeans. Put heels on or converse of your choice, then add an accessory - it could be earrings or a simple handbag.

Sporty look

Sports! Sports! How about looking cute for sports? You like the idea? Then let’s rock the look up! Grab yourself a black sports shorts, branded according to how you want it. Top it up with a white or black breast holder, you can add a windbreaker if you feel like, then finalize the look with sneakers. Athleisure never looked so good on you SKY girl!

Baddie

For the baddie look, think outside the box, wear a short checkered skirt or half dress or short. Top up with fun printed shirt and jacket. If you are a sneaker girl, go girls! Show them what your shoe rack has by picking suitable sneakers or boots. If pumps are your thing, pump the look up!

Preppy Wear a mid length body con dress and throw on a cropped denim jacket or any cropped throw over! Add some pumps or canvas to the look with your handbag or school bag.

And remember, fashion starts from within! The best way to rock a style is to stay true to yourself, and express your inside, on the outside :)

HOW TO FIND THE BEST FOUNDATION

TO MATCH YOUR SKIN TONE By Muzya Vida Musokotwane

Have you ever felt like your foundation was just too light or just too dark for your skin tone and doesn’t match? Well, we’re here to help. Here are a few tips to help you pick and match foundation for your skin tone.

The most important thing is to igure out your undertones. Your skin’s undertones can be grouped into three categories: Neutral, cooland arm. Blue veins on your rist mean you have a coolundertone, blue/green veins mean you are neutral and green veins mean your undertone is arm.

Before trying out oundation make sure your skin is not dry. It’s also orth applying some primer to prep your ace.

Do a test by blending a ewstreaks ofthe oundation on your jawine. The oundation should match your neckwhen you’re acing your side, to prevent it rom appearing as a mask.

12

Sometimes oundation can match your skin immediately and during the course ofthe day the colour changes. So try testing out and earing the oundation or a ew hours - this il help you to see ifthe colour ould remain the same throughout the day.

Observe howthe oundation looks in diferent ighting. Try to observe it in naturallight, with a camera, and in a mirror. It on’t match 100 percent in al these settings but it should ook close enough to your skin tone.

When in doubt, choosing the ighter option is usualy the best idea.

Ciana Namuyemba (14) What I do for fun is playing video games, roller skating, drawing, dancing, and listening to music. I also like to spend time with my friends because my friends are like my second family. I stay true to myself by standing up for what I believe in, doing things that make me happy and I don't let other people’s opinions change what I stand for. When I grow up I want to be on the business side of the fashion industry. So that I can make clothes that say what everyone is thinking; that express different people and let people’s unique personalities shine through. My Thing: Singing, dancing and fashion Not My Thing: Second-hand smoke, gossiping and starting drama

Amy Eideth Martinez Mwaka (16) I would describe myself as sporty and nerdy. I'm in my 11th grade of high school. I love to play sports, draw and write, whether it be poems or novels. I stay true to myself by doing what I love and sticking to my morals. I want to be an environmental engineer slash author when I grow up. My Thing: Creativity, random gestures of kindness and equality Not My Thing: Unnecessary rudeness, unreasonable destruction and being untidy/unhygienic

15

Saskia Kruger (15) I'm currently in grade 11. I am a very sporty individual and I love making the people around me laugh. My hobbies include playing basketball, running, making jewellery, and helping or looking after animals. I stay true to myself by having a positive mindset and doing things for myself, not with the intention to please others. When I'm older I would like to study marine biology and go on to become a marine mammologist or play basketball in the WNBL. My Thing: Sports, animals, friends and family Not My Thing: Liars, frogs and smoking

Rosetta Nkalela Phiri (17) I am a fun, polite, and positive person. I recently graduated from high school last year. This year I applied to UNZA and I'm scheduled to start in February 2022. What I love to do for fun consists of taking pictures, creating content for my YouTube and my Instagram. I love spending time with family and friends, talking, and motivating people. I love working because sitting around is boring. I absolutely love modeling and taking photos because it's therapeutic for me. I stay true to myself by loving myself, I believe self-love is the best love. If you don't love yourself, you won't be able to love others. When you love yourself, people's negative opinions aren't going to bother you. Instead, they will motivate you to work harder and better yourself. My Thing: Modeling, fashion, and positive vibes Not My Thing: Judgemental people, smoking and alcohol

16

Tumelo Princess Mwendabai (13) My personality is funny, friendly, kind, and open-minded. My hobbies include playing, sleeping, going out with friends and family, playing football, basketball, and running. When I grow up I want to be a scientist or a surgical doctor. Kalela Shamwana (17) In my free time I like to draw and paint, as well as listen to music. I try to stay true to myself by always approaching people with kindness and trying to get through difficult situations no matter what. When I’m older, I want to hopefully work in business management and directing. My Thing: Creativity, writing and design Not My Thing: Negativity, crowds, ignorance

Dearest Tash, This is a time before the cell phone is widely available, before shopping malls dot every corner, before the internet is at your fingertips. It is a time when friendships are face-to-face so we escort each other up and down the road until parents begin to return home. Fourteen is a formative time. It is also when you make friends who will likely grow to be part of your life for a very long time, so cherish each other and choose wisely. Learn to empathise, be aware of your emotions and train your heart to hear the next one. It will be one of your most valuable life skills, and hopefully the most rewarding. School is a fantastic time to soak yourself up in knowledge, friendships and growth. You will miss it, so enjoy it. It is also a time when social discord can happen with people who you think mean the world to you, and when it does, it feels like planes will fall out of the sky. Please remember it is not the end. It is growth, and growth can hurt a little, but it too shall pass. Carry the lesson forward; learn to hear the wisdom in the story. Remembering who you are is important. Guard your narrative, your truth. Don’t let it be hijacked. Don’t try to conform it to others that you see from the outside looking in. Seek truth, always. Continue to read in order to think deeply, independently and critically. Speak up when you have to. Having said that, debate is healthy and it is not necessarily a personal confrontation. It is simply the exchange of ideas. Your idea may or may not be the preferred one of the day, so learn to be inclusive, allow your mind to stretch beyond your own view, and you will be richer for it. Whenever you have any doubt about your relevance in this world, remember, you are sufficient in yourself, in your Creator. There is a job for everything. Embrace your unique gifts and don’t be afraid to try something new even if it means starting from the bottom again.

Meet

Tozya Botah Writer, Producer and Director Extraordinaire!

You go girl! By Precious Mwansa Chisha

Today, more than ever, we can be anything we want to be! Women are breaking boundaries, leading in

male-dominated industries, and basically showing that there is nothing we can’t do. One person showing her black girl magic is writer/director Tozya Botah. She is the creative force behind hit series Amooye, currently airing on DSTV’s Zambezi Magic. Tozya is a writer and director who lives and breathes writing. She describes herself as an introverted individual who is funny and extremely passionate about television and film. You may know her work from Amooye, which is a successful show on Zambezi Magic about three young women who are trying to find themselves after traumatic life-changing events. From a very young age, writing was always something she wanted to get into. She believes it’s something she was born with and as soon as she could hold a pencil and put words together, she began to try to craft stories. She had a dream to either be a novelist or newspaper columnist. However, screenwriting was something she only picked up later in her mid-twenties and she realized that script writing came naturally to her. As most guardians react to art-based careers, Tozya’s uncle, who she describes as very old school, wanted her to have a more stable career like engineering, medicine or law. So she ended up getting into the Copperbelt University to study banking and finance. Unfortunately, as this was clearly not her passion, she failed in her first year. She went on to do Media Studies and Philosophy at the University of Namibia where she flourished.

22

My Thing: Harry Potter, chocolate and yoga Not My Thing: Gym and exercise, clubs, smoking and unnecessary drama To build and enhance her career, Tozya reads a lot of scripts, watches a lot of movies and forms networks with people with experience. She believes although you can learn “on-the-job”, it helps to speak to people who have already walked the path you’re on. In her free time, she loves to watch sports and keep in touch with friends. She is also part of a book club that meets once a month. Her advice to SKY girls is don’t put yourself in a box. Sometimes, you’re given an identity which may not be what you want as your interests evolve. Also, don’t be

afraid to explore different career paths and different experiences in life so that you do not miss out on what you could have actually loved or could have been good at.

Tozya really enjoyed her work on Amooye, especially sitting in the writers’ room crafting the stories. As far as inspiration goes, she looks up to amazing writers like Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Issa Rae and Nichole Amerteifio. She believes storytelling is so important because books, movies or television shows can sometimes be an escape from life which can be very tough. She says storytellers have a responsibility to sort of give people a ‘break’ from life’s struggles and it is a responsibility she takes very seriously.

All we can say is we stan a passionate and incredible woman!! We can’t wait to see what she does next!

Managing Stress Through Creativity! By Chanda Chibale

We are living in stressful times. It’s normal for people to get stressed from time to time and that is OK. Sometimes it could be school or just life in general. What matters most is how we manage or handle our stress. What do you usually do when you are stressed? Creativity has been shown to help reduce stress because it helps you relax. Since this is the creative issue of SKY magazine, here are a few amazing tips on how to beat stress - using creativity!

1

Art therapy is a great form of stress relief. Painting

can take you away from reality and it can be a great group activity. Being with friends or around people you love can help you feel better! Plus, you are creating something to keep. You can decorate your room with your art, or give it as a gift. You can do art therapy alone, with friends, or through Paint and Sip Zambia.

2

Yoga is another way to get rid of stress. Yoga poses are a series of movements ranging from simple to difficult, which are designed to increase strength and flexibility. In a simple pose, you might lie on the floor while completely relaxed. A difficult posture may have you stretching your physical limits. Controlling your breathing is another important part; yoga teaches that observing and controlling your breathing can help you control your body and quiet your mind.

Meditation or relaxation. You may incorporate meditation or relaxation into yoga, or you can do it as a separate activity. Meditation may help you learn to be more mindful and aware of the present moment without judgment. Being in the present helps you realise that things might not be so bad, and you can only focus on what you can control.

Music

24

3 4

can also help you relax. Listen to your favourite artist, or listen to artists such as Jhene Aiko who incorporates healing sounds into her most recent album Chilombo. Dancing can help too! There’s nothing like a vigorous 20-30 minute dance session to loosen up that attitude and feel recharged. Shake away your stress!

5

The use of adult colouring books has become popular as a form of relaxation, meditation, and stress relief. People with anxiety may find it helpful to use these colouring books to promote mindfulness in their daily lives. Check your local bookstore for a colouring book, or draw your own shapes to colour in. The key is to make it simple and repetitive, so that your mind feels unburdened. Flip to page 18 & 19 for an awesome colouring session and write down what your thing is and what's not your thing. Send us pictures of your colourings and you could win a Paint and Sip session :)

6

7

A journal is a great way to reflect on what you have accomplished and look for other possible solutions to issues you might be facing. A journal can also be used to save creative ideas that can later serve as future inspiration. Journaling can also help you release negative thoughts and feelings - once you have released these thoughts and feelings you will find yourself less stressed!

Change your surroundings by rearranging your room. It could help by focusing on one task or just changing the look of your surroundings. It might help to add a new plant like a succulent that does not require a lot of watering.

8

Exercise is not necessarily creative, but it does help get your blood circulation up and produce feel good neurotransmitters called endorphins. Feeling good helps reduce your stress levels. Any type of exercise works, as long as it’s something you enjoy.

9

Avoid activities that will increase your stress levels, such as smoking. There is a myth that smoking helps relieve stress - this is not true, studies show that it actually increases stress on top of all the other negative outcomes. If you ever feel you need a ‘stress relief’, don’t think about smoking - it won’t work. Instead, try a creative release, like the ideas above!

These are great ways to beat stress and by trying them, you can figure out what works best for you. Although stress and anxiety may arise in your life, there are many easy ways to reduce the pressure you feel. These tips often involve getting your mind away from the source of stress. Exercise, mindfulness and creativity can all work to relieve anxiety - and they will improve your overall quality of life as well. Let us know which one works best for you!

“There are always going to be people who don’t believe in you, doubt you or challenge your progress & By Denise Cohen

achievements, but as long as you know your worth and dedication you’ll be unstoppable.” – Mia Phiri.

Meet

MIA PHIRI

The brave multi-medal winning swimmer.

My Thing: Being organised, hanging with friends, tea Not My Thing: Early mornings, horror movies, smoking

When it comes to sports, swimming doesn’t always come to mind but when it’s summer time, lounging by the pool is always a good idea. Then there are some people we fondly refer to as water babies. Mia Phiri is one of those - being in the water is second nature to her, and she’s smashing records to prove it! Mia learnt to swim at 2, a time when most people are finding their feet! At 6 years old, Mia began competing, winning her first medal the same year. At age 12 she went on to win her first African Swimming Competition (CANA) gold medal in Mauritius. In 2018 she won a silver medal at the African Youth Games in Algeria, and was selected to swim at the Youth Olympic Games in the same year. Today, at only 18, Mia has racked up a total of 30 CANA medals and currently ranks 11th in all of Africa for the 50m backstroke. Mia is a brave athlete who isn’t afraid to push boundaries. The deep end is no limit for this rising star who is proud to represent Zambia on all platforms. Being motivated by her parents, her swim coach, and teammates at the Torpedoes swim club, Mia’s relationship with water was almost natural.

“The water has always been my safe space. I get in the water to train and prepare myself to perform to the best of my abilities but it’s also a time where I can clear my head.” Mia said. Despite all the success so far, Mia experienced some lows, missing out on the 2018 Youth Olympic qualifying time by 0.01, although she did have the opportunity to compete at the Youth Olympic Games in Argentina. “Another low was when my sports-induced asthma got increasingly worse and I thought I wouldn’t be able to swim without having bad asthma attacks.” Mia said. But through tough times Mia never gave up, she continues to push through and work hard each day to achieve her goals. Mia’s creativity goes beyond the swimming pool, she can impressively play the alto saxophone! The saxophone is a complicated and fun instrument that involves mastering breath control. So not only is she a decorated swimmer, she’s also a talented musician that loves to jam out to funky solos. Her views on creativity are inspiring, “Creativity is so important as it translates into many aspects of life. Creativity can help with problem solving, broaden perspectives and help people overcome prejudices.” Mia said. To the SKY girl reading this, Mia would like you to know, “You have the ability to achieve greatness in whatever you set your mind to. Control the controllable and always remember you are good enough.”

HOW TO MAKE A

CHITENGE

COVERED NOTEBOOK

Chitenge is considered by many to be an African fashion essential. The colorful and vibrant fabric is typically wrapped around the waist in a show of modesty. However, at SKY we're all about being extraordinary. So we have for you a quick and simple DIY to keep your notebooks looking stylish all while proudly rocking our heritage.

28

YOU WILL NEED: 3. Glue Your desired 2. Ruler 4. chitenge material

1. Scissors

STEPS: Step 1

Measure and mark Place your chitenge fabric right side down, put the open notebook on top, and mark the edge of the notebook. Use your ruler and make another rectangle 4cm from the traced line. The excess fabric is to be folded into the notebook later on.

Step 2

Cut out Using the scissors, accurately cut around the outer rectangle. Cut out small triangles of your fabric towards the middle as seen in the diagram, from the outer rectangle to the inner one. These flaps will be tucked in later.

Step 3

Glue

Smear adequate glue onto the cover of your book. Too much glue could soak through the cover, so be extra careful not to add too much.

Step 4

Press and tuck Place the fabric onto the wet glue, smoothen out any folds, and press. Applying pressure will allow the fabric to stay in place and avoid further folding. Once the back, front, and spine of your notebook are fully covered and dry. You can tuck in the excess fabric, by sticking it onto the inside of the cover with glue as you did for the outside cover.

HELPFUL

TIPS:

Using the glue, neatly attach the first page of your notebook onto the cover to conceal any mess or jagged edges from cutting.

For better results, start by gluing one side of the cover. Wait until it dries completely before doing the other side.

Make sure to put pressure as the glue dries to keep the fabric from folding i.e., a stack of books or any heavy object to keep the fabric pressed onto the cover. 29

By Trust Mulenga

A lot of people may be wondering what bubble tea is - the name itself sounds very fun and unique! The drink is originally from Taiwan, so you could say it’s a foreign drink. Bubble tea is mostly sold as a drink at cafes and restaurants, and it’s called ‘bubble tea’ because it contains little chewy balls called Boba. Many haven’t had the chance to taste it, so here’s a quick step by step process of how you can make a creamy delicious bubble tea easily, right from your home. You can make some for breakfast or even for a picnic with your friends. Bubble tea is good for the summer because it’s served cold. It can be made in different flavours such as black or jasmine, fruit flavours like strawberry or honey dew.

INGREDIENTS Here’s what you will need: Tea (decide what flavour tea you would like to use cause that will be the flavour of the whole drink), milk, sweetener, ice and of course boba. Simple, right? Make sure you have your glass and straws ready too. Boba, also called tropical pearls, is the main ingredient in bubble tea. It is made of tapioca starch that comes from cassava root. They are small little balls that go to the bottom of the bubble tea. You could buy it from a store but making it is also pretty easy. To make it you will need half a cup of water, brown sugar, starch flour and black food colouring. Boil the water and add in the sugar. Mix this until it’s fully dissolved. Then add your starch flour and 3 drops of food colouring. Mix this until it’s like a dough texture. Take it out of the pot and continue to knead it while adding more flour to make it thicker. After you’re done, roll it into strips and cut it up into small balls.

30

STEP 1 : TEA

Before you do anything else, Make your tea! To do this you will need to bring about 6 cups of water to a boil. After the water has boiled, take it off the heat and add your teabag in. You can make the tea as strong as you would like. Take out the tea bag. For taste, you will need to make a syrup separately. Mix half a cup of water, add your preferred sweetener and stir. Pop the tea and syrup in the fridge for about 20-25 minutes to cool.

STEP 2 : BOBA Boil the Boba for 10 minutes, it is fast cooking so it gets soft really quick. Make sure to not pre-cook your boba if it’s going to be for immediate use or else you might harden them and we don’t want that! The boba is supposed to be soft and chewy. Bring the Boba to a boil while stirring to stop them from sticking together. When the boba is ready, take it out of the pot and put it in a strainer. Rinse it under some cold water and let it sit for about 10 minutes.

STEP 3 : ASSEMBLE

Lastly, we put everything together and make the drink. Start by pouring your tea into a long glass, then add in some milk to make the tea creamy . Then add the boba in, they are sure to fall all the way down to the bottom. Finally add your sweetener, which is the syrup you made earlier and a few ice cubes if you want it extra chilled. Add your straw and you’re done! Your very own bubble tea right from the comfort of your home. Go ahead and try it, take some pictures to show us!

JOSEPH KAYUMBA Photographer (21)

My Thing: Photography, working out, reading, music, learning, creating and interacting, getting to know other people's views on certain issues. Not My Thing: Laziness, negative energy, and hanging out with the wrong people. My personality in general is somewhere in between an intro and extrovert. Overall I'm a fun person to be with. I love learning and trying out new things. I learned about photography through magazines and social media. l used to look at other people's works and that really inspired me. I eventually started taking photos with my phone until I met a professional photographer that taught me one or two things and that’s how it all started. Being a creative allows me to express myself creatively. I get to show the world what I am thinking and feeling at a particular moment through my content. What I love the most is that I always have to think and come up with new ideas. It's challenging, but I have to step out of my comfort zone and think outside the box. I had a life-changing experience working on issue 6 of SKY magazine. What I loved the most was that I was put in a space of creative people and everyone was expected to bring something to the table. I was allowed to work with very experienced people in my field of expertise. I had a chance to meet and be taught by the best photographers in Zambia including Mr. Kavindele. I learned a lot from him including how to get recognized as a photographer, how to handle clients, the fundamentals of photography, handling it as a business, the list is endless. It all helped me grow as a creative. All in all, I'm grateful I got to interact with people who are more experienced than me and who shared their knowledge that they have grasped throughout their lives in this industry. I aspire to improve my work ethic and the level of professionalism in this industry.

NTHANDOSE MUSUKWA Coding and Programmer (15)

My Thing: Music, dance and coding. Not My Thing: Stereotypes, smoking shisha and spiders. I'm a grade 12 at Kabulonga Girls Secondary school. I'm an extroverted introvert. My interest in graphic design came from school, a program was held about graphics so I took an interest, later the school even formed a club about it and as time went by, due to hard work and determination I became president of the club. My inspiration to be creative lies in my curiosity. I constantly find myself wondering "if I put this and this together, what will happen? If I add a little bit of this and a little bit of that, how will it turn out? If I set this to do that could it actually happen?" Another thing that inspires me to be creative is that I'm eager to make modern technology helpful to our community. Through SKY I have gotten to indulge in different activities and I must say I've learned a lot throughout the experience. I got to discover different techniques to improve my skills, this helped me get out of my comfort zone and discover a whole new version of myself. It made me realise that I can do more than I imagined. Most importantly it was fun, and I will continue to rise and meet my SKY. I manage to stay true to myself by being my own leader. This means that I never really care what negative things anyone says about me or let it control me. Some members of our generation can be very stuck up and sometimes peers will influence one into drugs and other activities for all the wrong reasons. However, I'm not that type of person, thus making me my own leader. I see my career going really far if I continue to put my mind to it, only a few women are in this industry and I want to be the one to set the bar and pave the way for others. Lastly, with God's guidance, I've been able to control myself and my actions to stay true to myself.

JOSEPHINE CHAKUFOLA (16) My Thing:

Not My Thing:

Poetry, fashion and design and food

Doing house chores, lying

I describe myself as a fun and artistic person. I’ve always been artistic from a young age. I’d watch fashion shows and be inspired by the unique and bold outfits that were showcased and that peaked my interest in fashion and design. Through design I am able to bring my ideas to life. The SKY experience has positively challenged me. It’s given me a new perspective on fashion and inspired me to work on a new clothing line. I have learnt to work with others and put my skills to test. My goal is to own my own clothing brand and be one of the top designers in the world. I stay true to myself by staying away from bad influence, not caring what other people think about my personality and loving myself and what I do. I’m looking forward to having another SKY experience!

MIRRIAM MULENGA (20) My Thing:

Not My Thing:

Positivity, staying true to myself and working hard Alcohol, negativity and gossiping I got inspired to become a makeup artist through the YouTube videos I’d watch, and one of my favourite influencers Jarre techniques really inspired me, as well as other beauty influencers. I am an ambitious, determined, hardworking and outspoken person. I enjoy engaging in different conversations and definitely speak my mind and stand my ground when I have a valid opinion. My SKY experience was amazing and I will never forget it. I got to interact with awesome creatives and the SKY team. I got to practice and improve my craft with the help of the other makeup artists present and doing makeup on different people was so fun. I’m still learning and being mentored taught me new techniques. I’ve been practising since and I’m seeing the small improvements in my craft. I see myself becoming one of the top professional makeup artists. Through consistency and determination, I believe I can achieve this. Looking good is a necessity! Makeup is able to boost one’s confidence and that’s what I want to do, make people feel good about themselves. I stay true to myself by being positive. When I’m in negative situations, my spirit feels low but reaffirming to myself that everything’s going to be okay lifts my spirit. If I don’t believe in myself, who will?

NAOMI NTALA (18) My Thing: Singing, dancing and make-up

Not My Thing: Negative vibes, smoking and fighting

I am a jovial God-fearing girl that has interests in singing, dancing, rapping and reading. I am an art lover and a sucker for anything to do with art. My passion is make-up - from the time I was younger I’ve always enjoyed playing with my face and though it didn’t always come out good I’d still work on it. My mum supported me so much as she purchased makeup tools to help me improve my craft. My SKY experience was awesome. I absolutely loved every bit and part of it. I felt so included and welcomed. I got to contribute to the creative makeup styles. I usually have a hard time making friends in large groups of people that I just met for the first time but this time around I found it so easy, because everyone had good energy. I’d definitely love to meet and work with my fellow SKY talent and the SKY team again. My goal in this industry is owning my own makeup brand and because I love the type of makeup done in horror films, being one of the top SFX makeup artists. I stay true to myself by reaffirming myself. SFX is so different from the make-up that most people do and I used to get criticism for my makeup though I don’t listen to their opinions because that’s what I love and will not change it for anyone.

SKY

Advice Hey Boo,

Hi SKY,

I’m graduating from high school at the end of this year but I’m not sure what I should study in uni. Please help me figure this out.

Firstly I’m proud of you for planning ahead, that’s always a great start. University is fairly demanding and won’t always be smooth sailing but if you’re pursuing something that’s linked to your interests, it makes the load easier. So take time (possibly a gap year) and assess your interests, then pick out which one you are confident to excel at and make a living from.

Hey Boo, Hi SKY,

Do you have a sister?lol I’m just trying to see if I’m the only one who wants to choke mine. She’s older than me but we argue so much, it doesn’t even make sense. How can I fix that?

Hi SKY,

So I was having a bad day and I basically projected that onto my desk mate. She didn’t know the space that I was in and that made me more angry because she didn’t notice I was upset. So I snapped at her and said some mean stuff about a secret she had told me and all our classmates heard. I feel really horrible about it, how can I correct it?

34

Hahaha! Well yes and it’s pretty normal to have misunderstandings with a sibling. Get to the root cause of why you two actually argue then see how you contribute to it and start working on that. Once you master that, you can share the same advice with her so she can do the same and you can both work towards having a healthy relationship. I hope this helps.

Hey Boo,

I hope you’re in a better space now.. I’m glad that you realised that you had hurt her, that’s the first step to correcting the situation. I’d advise you to speak to her about why you said what you said and apologise to her. Next time you don’t feel like yourself, express that to those that you care about because you can’t expect them to guess. When you do that, you allow them to be present for you. Also be patient with her and how she chooses to process what you say. All the best honey.
