Architectural wonders also incite people to travel. Vitra’s manufacturing area, which was christened Vitra Campus and is full of works by superstar architects, is on the pages of our magazine this month. World-famous architects such as Zaha Hadid, Frank Gehry, Kazuyo Sejima, and Herzog & de Mauron gave the Vitra lot in Well am Rhein, which was reduced to ashes as the result of a tragic fire, a brand new appearance with their works. You shall find details on the architectural campus that emerged in the aftermath of this tragic occurrence on the pages to come.

Well am Rhein’den biraz daha güneyde yer alan Bolzano’da minik bir restoranda yemek molası vererek turumuzu tamamlayacağız. Zum Löwen isimli bu aile restoranı farklı işlerle meşgulken böyle bir yer açmaya karar veren bir çiftin başarı hikâyesini de anlatıyor. Hiç hesapta yokken bir Michelin yıldızıyla ödüllendirilmeleri sonucu şu an dünyaca ünlü bir lezzet durağı olan restoranın sahibi ve aşçısı Anna bizim için ilginç bir yemek tarifi de hazırladı.

We shall complete our tour by stopping for a meal in Bolzano, a little to the south from Well am Rhein. This family restaurant, named Zum Löwen, tells the success story of a couple that decided to open such a place while they were occupied with other kinds of work. Anna, the owner and chef of the restaurant that is now a world-famous stop for flavorful delicacies as a result of unexpectedly being awarded a Michelin star, also prepared an interesting recipe for us.

These rings – named after Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty in Greek mythology – are made of black sapphire and white diamonds. Cypris is another of Aphrodite’s names. In reference to Aphrodite, who was usually depicted in a chariot drawn by swans, the rings were given the name Cypris.

The motor yachts, designed by legendary yacht designer Michael Peters, draw attention with their aggressive appearances. SHOPPING AND ENTERTAINMENT! v Istanbul Shopping Fest will continue the shopping craze that will start on March 18 with various events through April 26. In the opening events to take place this month, a convoy will take off from Sultanahmet, go through Taksim, and arrive on Bağdat Avenue with much fanfare. Meanwhile, shopping in Beyoğlu, Nişantası, and Bağdat Avenue will last until 02:00 that night. The city will turn into a big gift box for the duration of the festival, which is summed up with the words Istanbul, Shopping, and Entertainment. A group of musicians composed of six hundred individuals, concerts by various artists, and several entertainment crews will add color to Istanbul throughout the event. There will also be street festivities, shows, games and toys for children, musical events, parties, contests, fashion shows, and raffles contributing to the festive atmosphere.

Stars from around the globe came together at the gala evening for the four new models that were displayed at the SIHH Fair taking place in Geneva. Celebrities including Cate Blanchett, Elle Macpherson, Matthew Fox, Luis Figo, Kevin Spacey, and Jean Reno had an exclusive photo shoot with Peter Lindbergh and conveyed Portofino’s warm atmosphere to Geneva, the cold northerner. The exhibit, titled “Peter Lindbergh’s Portofino,” will soon be going on a world tour during which it can be seen in large cities around the Middle East, Asia, America, and Europe, including Istanbul.

Houses that seem as if they could be easily dismantled and be replaced by new ones to be built, large billboards, people watering their gardens, and a sparkling clear sky... The day I returned to my senses and wanted to go out to discover the area was the first day I started to move away from the idea that this film would forever be baby blue. In order to move about freely in Los Angeles, you must first acquire a car! But the rapidly increasing traffic shoves the reality that you will not be able to madly and excitedly follow the car ahead of you right in your face. Then, an air with the consistency of cotton candy suddenly envelops you as you arrive in Venice Beach, where pretty girls and golden-tanned young men amble about. I immediately tried to rent a pair of skates to squeeze myself into that picture I had formed in my

Bu dile ortak olacak diğer yapılar için Vitra geçtiğimiz yılda iki eser daha kazandı: Biri Herzog & de Meuron tasarımı VitraHaus diğeriyse 2010’da Pritzker Ödülü’nü kazanan SANAA Architecture’dan Kazuyo Sejima’ya sipariş edilen 20 bin metrekarelik yeni fabrika. Bunlarla beraber Vitra’nın süperstar mimarlar karması daha da genişlemiş bulunuyor. Bir yangınla beraber bu kadar enteresan mimari eserlerin bir araya gelebilme şansı bulması insana o kıvılcımın hayra alamet olduğunu hatırlatıyor ister istemez. Kim bilir, o yangın çıkmasaydı belki de bugün bu alanda da diğer fabrika arazilerinde olduğu gibi tek tip, soğuk, sadece amaca yönelik ve tasarım adına çok söz söylemeyen yapılar görecektik.

A very large fire that occurred in 1981 damaged the majority of Vitra’s factory buildings. Though the result was saddening, the outcome was eventually very pleasing for architecture lovers: the Vitra Campus. While the sculpture named Balancing Tools, which was added to the lot in 1984 by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen, started providing a formative idea on the identity of the area that would soon take shape, everything changed radically when Frank Gehry, a close friend of Oldenburg, visited the area and met with Vitra CEO Rolf Fehlbaum. After the Vitra Design Museum and a factory building – the first permanent works built by Gehry outside of the US – were opened in 1989, one by one, other architects designed more buildings or structures for other purposes for the Vitra Campus. Besides

being a center drawing visitors from all around the world, today, the Vitra Campus actually serves as a headquarters for Vitra’s production and distribution. As it also houses works by many talented designers of the modern era, in a way, it also represents the zeitgeist. Though these structures are all different, they actually share a common language that reflects Vitra’s approach to design. Vitra gained two new works last year to share in this common language: VitraHaus, designed by Herzog & de Meuron; and the new, 20,000 square meter factory commissioned to Kazuyo Sejima, who won the Pritzker Award in 2010. With these, Vitra’s medley of superstar architects expands even more. One is inadvertently reminded that the spark ended up bringing about good, as so many interesting architectural works found a chance to come together due to the resultant fire. Who knows, if that fire had not occurred, perhaps we would see cookie-cutter, cold, purely functional structures with little to say in design, as seen in other factory lots.

For the Sake of Seventy Years…

Vitra’nın kurucusu Willi Fehlbaum’un 70. doğum günü hediyesi olan bu heykel aslında mobilya üreticileri için gerekli olan temel aletlerin devasa boyutlardaki bir yorumu. Rolf Fehlbaum, bu heykel için Oldenburg’un stüdyosuna yaptığı ziyaretlerde Frank Gehry ile tanışır ve Vitra Campus’ün kaderi değişir.

This sculpture, which was a gift for the seventieth birthday of the founder of Vitra, Willi Fehlbaum, is actually an oversized depiction of the fundamental tools needed by furniture makers. Rolf Fehlbaum met Frank Gehry on the visits to his studio in Oldenburg for this sculpture, thus changing the fate of the Vitra Campus.

The organically shaped fire station building contains everything Vitra – which survived a great fire – could need: garages, changing rooms for firefighters, a kitchen, and a conference center. However, today, the building is used as an exhibition area.

This wide structure, designed by Siza, looks like a firefighters’ building and is made of red bricks. The bridge between Grimshaw’s factory and Siza’s is not to pass over; it is to protect the path beneath the two factories from rain.

The pavilion is Japanese architect Tadao Ando’s first structure outside his homeland. The path leading to the pavilion, which houses conference rooms within its tranquil architecture, is influenced by the meditation paths in Japanese monasteries.

Geçtiğimiz yıl Pritzker Ödülü’n layık görülen Japon mimari ofisi SANAA’nın bir yarısı Kazuyo Sejima tarafından tasarlanan bina tüm alan içerisinde en çok merak edilen yapılardan biri oldu. Sejima en son Venedik Bienali’nin (2010) mimari sektörünün direktörlüğü görevini de üstlenmişti.

Designed by Kazuyo Sejima, half of Japanese architectural agency SANAA (which was deemed worthy of the Pritzker Award last year), the building drew the most curiosity among the structures in the whole area. Most recently, Sejima had also assumed directorship of the architectural sector of the Venice Biennale (2010).

VitraHaus is a masterpiece added to VitraCampus by the duo that has been among the most talked-about names in recent years. The structure, which resembles a chaotic heap piled over itself, can actually be described simply as a stack of ordinary residential imagery that has been stretched. VitraHaus is used as an office and as a showroom for home furnishings.

As we strode through the streets of Osaka, then Kyoto and Tokyo, we decided that the belief that the Japanese are petite, compact people could disappear at this rate. Though older Japanese may be small, the new generation of young people is not short at all. This change may be due to changing eating habits, sports, or the fact that Japanese society is, if only a little, losing its homogeneity (the entry of milk and dairy products rich in calcium, the strongest influence on height, in Far Eastern cuisine was very recent). While new generations may grow in height, we must bring up one of the fundamental

characteristics of Japanese society: Japan is a culture of miniaturization. If we need to compare it to its neighbors, for instance, China is a culture of exaggeration! Big is beautiful in China: big palaces, big temples, big Buddha statues, and Tiananmen, the world’s largest square! In Japan, however, small is beautiful. Houses, temples, and even trees are shrunk! In China and Korea, pavilions covered in ceramic bricks and sheltered from rain are built in the gardens of palaces and temples so that aristocrats can read poems and chat in a calm corner of the palaces’ gardens. The Japanese create scenery by decorating the bits of rock that symbolize mountains on sand in the courtyards – which rarely exceed three to five square meters – of their houses and temples with plants, transporting nature to these courtyards instead of going to it. Another Japanese art, an art of arranging flowers called ikebana that is many centuries old, adorns these small, plainly furnished houses where Western furniture is not often found. The folding, shrinking umbrella that we all know is also a Japanese invention. But hold on tight, as we’re about to enter the modern era. When the Japanese, on meeting technology, started creating the

Haiku, dünya edebiyatınıda bilinen en küçük şiir ölçüsüdür. Edebiyatta (halk kültüründe) yüzlerce yıldır anlatılan masallarda minicik cinler ev eşyalarının içine saklanırlar. Bir şeyin küçüklüğünü tarif etmek için “sivrisineğin gözyaşlarından oluşan gölde kürek çeken kayıkçı” örneği verilir. Neden bu kadar ekonomik davranır Japon insanı? Dünyaya kapalı üç yüzyılda sıkışıp, daralan ekonomisiyle, her tarafı dağ olan ülkede çok az tarım yapılabildiğinden, kalabalık nüfusu en azla doyurabilme ve barındırma çabası, yüzyıllar içinde bu özgün halini almış olmalı. Japon insanı en azla yetinmeyi bilir. Küçücük mekânlarda yaşayabilme becerisine sahiptir. Mekan ölçüleri ise “tetami” denilen, ince pirinç saplarından örülmüş bir hasırdır. 80x180 cm ebadındaki bu hasır, bizim Anadolu’daki kilim gibi her Japon evinin vazgeçilmezidir. Japon, yarım tetamiye oturur, bir tetamide uyur, iki tetamide dostlarıyla ya da ailesiyle yemek yer çay içer. Evin maksimum genişliği üç-dört tetami boyundadır. Van Gogh had made copies of Hiroshige’s woodblock prints. The haiku, the famous Japanese form of poetry based on seventeen syllables (5+7+5) and three lines, reached perfection and its most lyrical examples with the work of Matsuo Basho. The Haiku is the shortest known measure of poetry in world literature. Tiny genies that appear in the stories told for hundreds of years in literature (in folk culture) hide within household items. In order to describe how small something is, they liken it to “the boater that rows in a lake formed of the tears of the mosquito.” Why does the Japanese person act so economically? In a country shut off to the rest of the world, with an economy that was squeezed and shrunk over

three centuries, where little agriculture could be practiced due to being surrounded by mountains, the struggle to feed and house a crowded population on as few resources as possible must have taken its unique form within a few hundred years. The Japanese person knows how to get by on as little as possible. They have the ability to live in tiny space. Spaces are defined by woven mats called “tatami,” which are made of rice straw. These mats, which are 80x180 cm, are essential items of every Japanese house, much like the carpet in Anatolia. A Japanese person sits on half a tatami, sleeps on a full tatami, and dines and drinks tea with friends or family on two tatami. Their houses are three or four tatami wide at most. One does

Aradığımız izi daha çok Tokyo’nun Shinjuku ve Shibuya caddelerindeki Gotik görünümlü genç kızların neşeli, hayat dolu ifadelerinde, Edo döneminin olağanüstü resim geleneğinin hala yaşayan izlerini ise milyarlarca dolarlık manga ve anime (çizgi film, animasyon) endüstrisinde buluyoruz. Bütün bu endüstrinin çocuklar için üretildiği yanlış inancını, daha ilk birkaç örneği izleyince bir kenara atıyoruz. İç içe geçmiş sayısız hikâyenin, inanılmaz bir görsel zenginlikle karışmasının sonucunu “Mo-no-no-ke” adlı dizinin bütününü izleyince anlıyoruz. Japon bir türlü büyümek istemiyor, Peter Pan gibi hep çocuk kalarak kendi kurduğu, küçülttüğü, yoğunlaştırdığı, yeniden biçimlendirdiği bir dünyada yaşamak istiyor. Japon dünyasında…

Modernity in Japan resembles an evolved form of its tradition. Like a ceramic artist or a sword master, it is the last member of a family that has worked in the same profession for generations. “Otaku” achieve incredible perfection and finesse in their own fields – refusing to leave their rooms as they obsessively pursue something on their minds by living through the internet and computers, perhaps gathering all things that have to do with a certain of computer game, a cartoon, a manga, or “Star Wars” as we encountered an example of in Kyoto – and encompass the new creative segment of Japanese youth. We futilely search for the traces of Utamaro and Hokusai’s prints on the expressionless face of a geisha, appearing to be a relic from past centuries

that is adorned in mysteries, who we encounter in Kyoto’s famous Gion neighborhood. Instead, we find what we seek in the cheerful, lively expression of the Gothic looking young ladies on Tokyo’s Shinjuku and Shibuya avenues, and traces of the Edo period’s extraordinary tradition of illustration live on in the billion-dollar manga and anime (cartoon, animation) industry. We cast aside the incorrect belief that this whole industry is for children after watching just the first few examples. We realize the result of the combination of countless intertwined stories with incredible visual richness after watching the entirety of the TV series called “Mononoke.” Japan just doesn’t want to grow up. Like Peter Pan, it wants to stay as a child, living in a world – a Japanese world – that it created, shrank, concentrated, and restructured on its own.

Are markets that are rising economically more interested in the luxury watch industry than other countries? Firstly, we find it appropriate that they are being called rising markets once again. As for the question, I believe that those markets are at least as interested as the others are; the situation is equal. They understand beautiful products and technical advancements and appreciate Swiss watches.

The Swiss watch industry had a very rough year in 2009 due to the economic crisis. In fact, even Piaget turned to cutting down on production, like other watch companies. How is the situation now? Firstly, it is much better for Piaget in terms of sales now than it was last year. New markets make up a large part of our sales: Asia, the Middle East, and America. It is true that we cut down our production a bit last year because we thought sales wouldn’t be good, but there is a great increase to speak of now. Because of this, we are now moving toward increasing capacity. Yes, 2009 was truly bad, but 2010 was amazing and we think that 2011 will be even better. Do you think the Europe and US markets are still

Are you developing special products for certain markets? No. However, last year, we produced a limited edition especially for the year of the dragon. But we put this on sale in the whole world, not just for a certain market. Do you also believe that the luxury customer changed after the crisis? The new generation is making money at a younger age. If you can’t make money by the time you are forty, it gets harder afterward. The entire generation keeps on getting younger. Our typical target audience used to be between the ages of forty-five and sixtyfive; today, however, the group between the ages of thirty and forty-five is at the heart of the business. And this is the greatest change.

SADUN BORO İLE MAVİ DENİZLERE ÖZLEM LONGING FOR BLUE SEAS WITH SADUN BORO Sadun Boro açık deniz yolculuklarına, 1952’de İngiltere’de öğrenciyken Atlantik Okyanusu’nu geçerek başladı. Dünyanın birçok ülkesini, onlarca denizini gördü. Türk Hava Yolları Pazarlama ve Satıştan Sorumlu Genel Müdür Yardımcısı Faruk Çizmecioğlu, ömrünün çoğunu denizde geçiren, denize âşık olan Sadun Boro ile denizi ve onu korumayı konuştu. Sadun Boro started open-sea voyages by crossing the Atlantic Ocean in 1952, when he was a student in England. He has seen many countries and dozens of seas around the world. Denizde kara görmeden en uzun seyriniz ne kadar sürmüştü? Pasifik’i aşıp, Galapagos’tan Markiz Adaları’na giderken 3 bin 500 mil, 36 gün süren bir yolculuk gerçekleştirdim.

Yanımıza bol miktarda kuru erzak ve konserve alırdık. Bunun dışında çok fazla güvenmemekle beraber balık da taze gıda oluyordu. Uzun süre bozulmadan durabilecek sebze ve meyveleri de ihmal etmiyorduk.

Weren’t you ever afraid? Whoever says they don’t fear the sea is lying. But when you set out on a long voyage, you are going to endure bad weather and storms that will make you sweat bullets. You won’t have nice weather all the time. Did you ever run short of

food and drink on your extended voyages? We always took along a plentiful supply of dried and canned foods. Other than that, there was also fresh fish, though we couldn’t count on it too much. We didn’t neglect to take along fruits and vegetables that can be stored for a long time without spoiling either. You lived at sea for many years; even now, you are still in close contact with the sea. How does being a person of the sea influence a one’s worldview and outlook on life? It’s very different, of

In life at sea, you are in the hands of nature, far from the pressures and concerns of the city. You have to comply with its necessities and conditions. You can’t go against nature; you have to bow to it and organize your actions and way of life accordingly. There is no ‘dog eat dog’ struggle between people at sea as there is on land. We see today how and to what extent the world’s great metropolises have affected the way we live. People have gotten quite far away from their normal lives for the sake of making money. People become a bundle of nerves in the traffic and congestion. And when the stresses of work are added in, you get yet another burden.

Karadeniz’de denizden komşu olduğumuz devletler de konuya yeterince özen göstermedi. Karadeniz’de 1989 yılında teknemiz Kısmet ile üç ay boyunca Hopa’ya kadar Karadeniz’i gezmiştik. Sisten dolayı şehirleri görmesek dahi denizin durumundan kent merkezlerinin sahillerinden geçtiğimizi hemen anlardık. Akdeniz’de durum nedir? What is your assessment of the current state of our seas? Everyone over the age of forty will remember how wonderful the Sea of Marmara used to be. The salt water coming from the Aegean and the Dardanelles would merge with the relatively fresh, low-salt water from the Black Sea, so that the Marmara was one of the rare seas in the world low in salt where you could swim – even snorkel – easily. The seafood coming out of its waters was the tastiest and the most highly prized as well as being extremely diverse. Istanbul’s population was around five hundred thousand when I was a boy. Suddenly, it increased thirty-fold in the intervening forty to fifty years. Of course, this development affected the seas too. Though a general awareness of the situation has lately developed in the Black Sea, do you think it’s enough? No, unfortunately it is not enough, but this is not just Turkey’s fault. Our neighboring states on the Black Sea made the same mistake and continue to do so. We sailed on the Black Sea for three months in

Seneler önce teknemle İskenderun Körfezi’ni gezerken körfezin durumundan etkilenip bir hayli üzülmüştüm. Deniz kirliliğinin yüzde 95’i karadan kaynaklanır. Bizden sonraki kuşakların mavi suları görüp bizim yaşadığımız keyifleri yaşaması için üzerimize düşen görevi yapmalıyız. Yat turizminin bel kemiği Ege koylarının durumu nedir? Öncelikle şunu belirtmek isterim. Yaklaşık altmış sene boyunca dünya sahillerini gezip, hemen her yeri görme şansına kavuştum. Bizim Ege koyları, sahilleri ve denizleri kadar her yönüyle yat turizmine bu kadar elverişli bir sahil şeridini, dünyada hemen hemen başka bir yerde bulamazsınız. Tabii her yerde güzel kesimler vardır ama denizinin güzelliği, onu çevreleyen

ormanların eşsizliği, tarihinin derinliği, ikliminin güzelliği, insanlarının misafirperver oluşu, hayat şartlarının nispeten ucuz ve emniyetli oluşu göz önünde bulundurulduğunda Ege’nin önemi ve değeri anlaşılır. Elimizde böyle bir hazine var ama maalesef bu cenneti koruma konusunda yetersiz kalıyoruz. Gökova, Göcek, Hisarönü, Fethiye, Kekova körfezleri dünyada bir eşi, benzeri bulunmayan ve yat turizminin en önemli yerleri buralar. Nitekim son yıllarda bütün dünyada keşfedilip öğrenildi. Çok sayıda yabancı tekne koşarak sahillerimize geliyor, tatillerini burada yapıyor. Buraları gözümüz gibi korumalıyız. Bu saydığım koylar önce doğal sit alanı olup, ardından da korunması gereken özel çevre alanı oldu. Bu gelişmeler sevindirici. Turizme açma gerekçesiyle buralarda otel inşaatı yapılması tam bir felaket olur. Bu bölgeler yıllardır yat turizmi aracılığıyla turizme hizmet ediyor. Yat turizmi

Though we couldn’t see the cities due to the fog, we were immediately able to tell that we were passing by the shores of urban centers from the condition of the sea. What is the situation in the Mediterranean? The ocean current that flows into the Mediterranean through the Straits of Gibraltar follows the entire North African coast past Egypt and Israel to our shores. Then, it passes the coasts of Turkey, Greece, and Italy, and goes back out again. Thus, a serious amount of waste is being dumped into the Mediterranean by other countries, particularly those in the south of the Mediterranean. Years ago, when I was sailing the Gulf of İskenderun in my boat, I became quite upset on seeing the state of the gulf. About 95 percent of sea pollution

originates on land. We must perform the duty that falls on us in order for the generations after us to see the blue seas and experience the pleasures that we have experienced. What is the situation in the coves of the Aegean, the backbone of Turkey’s ? Let me first point out that I have been sailing the world’s coasts for about sixty years and have had a chance to see just about every place on earth. You won’t find another coastal strip as eminently suitable for yacht tourism as our Aegean coves, coasts, and seas almost anywhere in the world. There are beautiful sections of coastline everywhere of course, but the value and importance of the Aegean is clear when you consider the beauty of the sea itself, the unique forests that encircle it, the depth of history, the lovely

Turizme yatırım anlayışı mutlaka değişmeli. Çevre bilincinin kitlelere derinlemesine kazandırılması çok önemli. Yıllarca dünyayı dolaştığınız Kısmet adlı tekneniz ne oldu? Emektar teknemiz Kısmet’i Rahmi Koç Müzesi’ne bağışladım. Sergi alanında iklimlendirme ve nem denetimi ile ilgili bazı düzenlemeler yapılıyor. Bu düzenlemelerin ardından teşhire çıkacak orada. Kısmet, içinde dolu dolu kırk beş yıllık hayatımızın geçtiği tekne. Bizim en kıymetli varlığımız. Bu kararı vermek bizim için çok zor oldu ama gençlerimizin denize sevgisini arttırmak, onları denize yaklaştırmak ve bu noktada cesaretlerini, isteklerini yükseltmek için böyle bir tercih yaptık. Kısmet’in Rahmi Koç Müzesi gibi müstesna bir yerde sergilenecek olmasından da ayrı bir mutluluk duydum. Tek kelime de sizin için deniz eşittir? Deniz eşittir aşk!

climate, the hospitality of the people, and the fact the life is safe and relatively inexpensive. Such is the treasure we possess; yet we fall unfortunately short when it comes to protecting that paradise. The bays of Gökova, Göcek, Hisarönü, Fethiye, and Kekova are without match in the world and are, as the whole world has discovered in recent years, important places for yacht tourism. A large number of foreign yachts are racing to our shores to vacation here. We should protect these places with our lives. The bays I mentioned were first declared nature sites and then special environmental areas in need of protection. These are encouraging developments. But if the construction of hotels is allowed here on the grounds of opening up to tourism, it will be a complete disaster. These regions have been serving yacht tourism for years. Yacht tourism should not be underestimated. What needs to be done? What needs to be done is quite simple. The financial resources should be raised to a level that is sufficient for purification. The concept of investing in tourism absolutely must be changed. It is very important that the masses of people develop a deeper awareness of the environment. What has become of your yacht, Kısmet, on which you sailed the world for years? I retired my boat, Kısmet, and donated it to the Rahmi Koç Museum.

Some arrangements are being made with regard to humidity control and air conditioning in the exhibition area. After that, the boat will be put on display there. The Kısmet is a boat on which I spent a very full forty years of my life. It is my most valuable possession. It was very difficult for me to make this decision, but I did it in order to increase our young people’s love of the sea, to bring them closer to it, and to fuel their courage and desire to sail. I am also very happy that the Kısmet is going to be exhibited in such an exceptional place as the Rahmi Koç Museum. What is the sea to you, in a word? The sea equals love!

known as Sudtirol, or South Tyrol. When one is coming from a giant metropolis, such a place necessarily seems like a townlet. It is not belittling it, rather, surely due to the longing for such a thing, it is sort of a cute way to describe such a small yet organized place free of chaos. With many other settlements surrounding it such as Trento and Meran, the region of South Tyrol is a place where people speak and use the languages of German and Ladin (very few for the latter) alongside Italian. Multiculturalism must have worked its way into their

blood just as multilingualism. They treat their visitors, which there are not many of outside the skiing season, quite well, and I am enjoying this. We go on a tour of the area with my friend Marius, a local, in his car. When nature fills one’s eyes with all shades of green, when the scenery trips up a person’s mind, I have a sudden desire to get out of the vehicle and bellow madly. Does nature makes people strange? After all of these, as we try to make it to a local restaurant at which we made reservations for dinner, we stop at another one along the road; not to eat, but to chat. Marius tells

Before they decided to change their lives, Anna and Alois Matscher were, respectively, a masseuse and a banker. Of course, at the time, it didn’t occur to the couple that they would have a Michelin starred restaurant today; this was not their intention, anyway. At first, Anna developed her cooking – previously a hobby – through the help of her mother in law. Meanwhile, her

Anna ve Alois Matscher çifti hayatlarını değiştirmeye karar veren bir bankacı bey ve bir de masöz hanımdan oluşuyor. Malzemeler tava içerisine giriyor ve pişene kadar bir parmak yüksekliğindeki tavanın içinde kalıyor. Oradan çıkıp Anna’nın ağzına doğru gidiyor ve yeni malzemeler ardı sıra ekleniyor. Belki eski bir masöz olmasından dolayı Anna yemeklerini hissediyor. Onların nasıl en güzel ve en sağlıklı şekilde pişeceklerine sanki parmakları karar veriyor. Sonuç ise geleneksel lezzetle ve Akdenizli bir mutfağın karışımı ama her sezon başka başka maceralarla. Anna ve Alois’nin restoranları mütevazı, sakin ve hatta önünden geçseniz dahi belki de dikkatinizi çekmeyecek kadar bulunduğu yerle bütünleşmiş. Fakat sadece bu restoran ve takip eden sayfadaki tarif için bile bu yemek yolculuğu macerasına atılmanız işten bile değil.

Seemingly, it is her fingers that decide on how they will cook in the best and healthiest fashion. The result is a mixture of traditional and Mediterranean cuisine, but with different adventures each season. Anna and Alois’s restaurant is modest and calm, so integrated in its surroundings that you might not even notice it as you pass by; however, embarking on a gastronomic adventure just for this restaurant – or even for the recipe on the following page – would hardly be unexpected.
