Day by day we are getting closer to our 8th NGA, and once again there is a presenting opportunity for SLEMSians to serve the association at the highest level through the executive positions.
As a SLEMSian who is ready, competent and qualified enough to run for an executive position, and as i sit infront of my PC typing this letter, allow me to give you a quick insight as to why and how I am doing it.
“Young man, do you have any intention to run for executive position in the association”, I was perplexed, “uhhhhh no, why do…….” stuttering as I replied, but before i could complete my sentence, “the level of professionalism you have showed trying to get me as a trainer for your upcoming NGA is impressive, SLEMSA will be in safe hands, think about it” he added before we wrapped up the conversation..This was the phone conversation between myself (the then director of trainings for the 6th NGA) and a former Secretary General whom I was trying to get to conduct one of the training session during the NGA “Maybe in the future, why not? '' I said to myself as I went about my day trying to get the other trainers to commit to their respective training, as I was just another SLEMSian trying to serve the association to the best of my ability with nothing else in mind
Notwithstanding, there have been speculations over the years, with a plethora of questions from SLEMSians about when I will be making use of the opportunity to diligently serve the association at the highest level As the 8th NGA is fast approaching, with such a presenting opportunity to serve the association at the highest level, now more than ever, with utmost certainty I am ready to take the leap and apply for the position of the Secretary General I am more than aware of the huge challenges that it entails, but thinking about the impact SLEMSA and IFMSA will have on medical students makes me more and more excited about applying I want to help build an association where every single SLEMSian can feel included and safe, and where everyone has equitable access to the opportunities SLEMSA has to offer.
Mohamed Foday Sesay (Slim) is a household name whenever there is a discussion about SLEMSA, but for those who might not know me well, let me take the time to introduce myself
A couple of years ago I embarked on one of my biggest adventures to date, the position of National Officer on Human Rights and Peace (NORP), this was a position entrusted to me by the Dr. Abdul Karim Bah's led executive after serving as the Local Officer on Human Rights and Peace (LORP) the previous year Most of my fellow Scorpions will attest to how hardworking and productive our standing committee was despite the crumbling effect of the COVID19 pandemic. I have lived the SLEMSian way, from heading my standing committee, to serving in various organising committee positions to representing SLEMSA both at national and international levels. Better days are ahead.
As i metaphorically stand before you reading this letter, i want to assure you that i will apply all my acquired knowledge as a long standing SLEMSIAN, LORP, NORP, OC and IFMSA member into EB’s decision-making processes while surpassing your expectations for me as the administrator of our noble association.
As an aspiring Secretary General, I have put together a comprehensive plan of action based on the official responsibilities of the role, overall strategy of the organisation, and my personal experience as a longstanding member of SLEMSA, having served as LORP, NORP, and OC member on multiple occasions both at national and international level.
To effectively execute my duties, I have divided my plan into two key categories:
Through these categories, my focus will primarily be on the evaluation and further development of existing tools and resources to ensure that SLEMSA is utilising its potential efficiently and achieving sustainable growth.
As a former team of official member and active member of SLEMSA, I have had the opportunity to observe the work of the Executive Board (EB) and provide input to some of the decision-making processes. Through this experience, I have come to understand that the management of the association can be a time-intensive task, requiring a great deal of attention and care This is why as an eager beaver, I am enthusiastic to offer my administrative experience, communication skills, and knowledge about our association to support the EB members in their decisionmaking processes I will bring fresh perspective to the discussion ensuring that the EB is making a well informed and effective decision that is benefiting to the association as a whole.
Continuity is arguably the single most important fundamental factor of the long term successful outcome of an institution or association I will work hands clasped with my predecessors in ensuring the continuity of their legacies, tighten up loose ends and complete unfinished, pending and new tasks. All of these will be achieved by:
Upholding the smooth transitioning and handing over process of the executive I will listen and learn from the experiences and challenges of the past Secretary Generals
Create a handover checklist for myself and the team of officials to track our progress during that period. Ensuring the registration of New and unregistered members in an effective and timely manner.
Capacity building as one of the core principles of our beloved association, I will ensure in its utmost continuity
As the administrative head of SC directors, Exco, and Class ambassadors, we will to the best of my ability ensure to create capacity building training with already established personnel and partners, and seek other partners whose values and expertise will be beneficial to the association.
As our international governing body is strongly pushing towards the “Go green campaign” and with its implementation already started in SLEMSA.
I will review the existing database and make upgrades where necessary. Ensure that all documents are properly stored and readily and easily accessible.
Ensuring the accountability of the team of officials by the implementation of submission of quarterly work plans, and offering a helping hand in the development of project proposals of said work plans and seeking of funds. The importance of our external bilateral relationships with other students’ bodies and partners cannot be overemphasised, and it is for this reason, with my experience i will ensure the continual existence of such relationship and ongoing talks are already in motion for creating new bilateral relationships with other students’ bodies
All the stunning work we do as an association will be more meaningful, admirable and inspiring to others within SLEMSA and IFMSA if we enroll them and gain recognition for our hard work as they showcase the core values of SLEMSA. As a former NORP with experience in activities enrollment,I will help the team of officials, to amplify their magnificent work by:
Coordinating with other Exco and alumni in setting up the seminar on how to enroll activities in IFMSA.
As Secretary general, I will be working with the executive, class ambassadors and standing committe directors offering my expertise and support as the administrator in every topic where my perspective is beneficial. I will ensure collaboration between team of officials hence creating a favourable working atmosphere.
Effective participation and clear communication with members play a critical role in determining the success or failure of any organisation. As an administrative leader, along with other executive members, it is our responsibility to ensure that these essential elements are properly addressed to ensure the overall success of our organisation.
Efficient and timely registration of new and unregistered members is key to the growth and success of our association. As an administrative leader, I will streamline the registration process, making it user-friendly and accessible to all potential members, ensuring a simple, straightforward and timely registration process.
“When we fail to set boundaries and hold people accountable, we feel used and mistreated”.
A shortcut to a SLEMSA folder will be made available to the general membership.
In this folder you will find the minutes of meetings, annual work plans from team of officials and all necessary documents. This will help in terms of transparency and also the institutional memory of our association.
Regular performance evaluations for executive members and the team of officials. To this end, I will provide a platform for quarterly performance assessments, where feedbacks can be given and recorded
I will ensure that >20% of executive and team of officials will have an open call for observers, so members can join and engage with the discussion.
Ensuring that members benefit from the IFMSA meetings in which our association is being represented at international level. Together with other members of the executive and team of officials, we will make sure those travelling to attend such meetings upon returning conduct training sessions on what they have learnt from such meetings
Ensure that capacity building training through our already established partners and students’ bodies are done.
Providing the platform at standing committee level for an open dialogue allowing memebers to fully express their ideas and also learning in the process.
Work is already in progress towards developing the draft of a quarterly SLEMSA newsletter which will be available at the start of every quater and made easily accessible to all members. Collect quarterly updates from team of officials, set a plan, and create a design with the office of the PRO.
Comprehensive plans and coordination are already in motion to create a digital SLEMSA calender for all members to synchronize with their electronics devices, enabling an effective and efficient reminder of all SLEMSA activities, hence decreasing forgetfulness and increasing participation.
A sweeping plan is already in motion for the production of SLEMSA ID cards, i will be working hands clasped with all protocols involved in ensuring this come to past.
Together with the treasurer we will ensure the production of SLEMSA materials (T-shirts, hand bands, etc) at reasonable prices
