W
hen I was a child, my family lived in Victoria, and every summer we would head to the Gold Coast, where I now live with my family, for a holiday of sand and surf. For me, summer is all about spending time with my husband and my kids; the beach by day, and BBQs and drinks by night. For many people, like me, summer is the best of the seasons. Sun, swimming, evening barbeques by the sea… it can be a wonderful time of year. But for people who are struggling with their weight and fitness goals, summer can be a challenging time. Getting out and about in swimwear or shorts can be confronting for many, and the summer months can be a hot and uncomfortable reminder of how far they have to go in their weight loss journey. But here at SLIM we see summer as a season bursting with potential. A great time to start another year afresh. My hope for all our readers is that this is the year they achieve what they want to achieve, and become the person they want to be. We’ve got an abundance of fantastic stories to help you do just that. From exercise to diet, to breaking bad habits, to family matters, to light-hearted fun stories – there is something for everyone. As usual we also have great competitions and giveaways. I would love to hear your thoughts on the magazine so drop me a line anytime. Until next issue, enjoy your summer!

The Food Patrol is on a mission to educate as many people as possible about healthy eating and exercise. After developing eating and exercise programs over 20 years, personal trainer George Taaousanis decided to create his own patented system based on the concept of eating more to lose weight – The Food Patrol’s 90 Day Body SuperChallenge. Proving its effectiveness, in excess of 10,000 people have participated in The 90 Day Body SuperChallenge, with an estimated total fat loss of over 100 tonnes! Now going national, a new edition of The 90 Day Body SuperChallenge book will be released in March 2012. The Food Patrol provides food diaries, snack bars, formula and more, all available at www.foodpatrol.com.au

pass the pasta If you thought pasta was a thing of the past for anyone watching what they eat, think again. With just six to 14 calories and 0.5 to 1.7grams of carbohydrates per serve, SlimPasta is somewhat of a revolution. It’s made from an ancient vegetable called konjac, and its high level of natural dietary fibre leaves you feeling fuller longer than regular pasta. Konjac has been used in Asia for more than 1000 years and is now consumed all over the world by people who suffer from lifestyle-related illnesses to manage their weight loss and health. This is because the konjac is low in calories, and the dietary fibre has many other health benefits such as aiding the release of toxins from the body, reducing cholesterol absorption, encouraging and maintaining a healthy digestive system and reducing the rapid rise in blood sugar levels after meals (making it suitable for people with Type 2 diabetes). It takes just moments to cook, and is available online, gyms, dietitians, health food stores and in selected IGA supermarkets. Go to www.slimpasta.com.au

bite size lighter wines – we’ll drink to that
Summer is here and Lindeman’s Early Harvest range of lighter alcohol wines* is the perfect way to toast the new season. Deliciously crisp and refreshing, Lindeman’s Early Harvest wines make entertaining a breeze with a wine variety for every occasion this summer; from the bubbly Early Harvest Sparkling and Sparkling Rosé to the vibrant Early Harvest Crisp Dry White and Early Harvest Rosé. As the name suggests, Lindeman’s Early Harvest wines are created from selected parcels of grapes harvested from early ripening regions in South Eastern Australia giving the wines a uniquely refreshing taste while being 25 per cent lighter in alcohol and calories. The Lindeman’s Early Harvest Sparkling is the perfect way to start any celebration with its distinctive light fizz and a palate that displays lemon and lime flavours with a creamy finish. If a hint of strawberries and cream are preferred, the Lindeman’s Early Harvest Sparkling Rosé is a must-try. Lindeman’s ambassador and celebrity chef, Dominique Rizzo, suggests making her Lindeman’s punch of flowers or Lindeman’s sparkling pink rosemary lemonade, both ideal for pre-lunch drinks or afternoon entertaining. With ripe flavours of generous citrus and tropical fruits, the Lindeman’s Early Harvest Crisp Dry White is refreshing and crisp. This wine is a delightful blend of aromatic varieties that is the perfect partner to light, tasty salads and seafood platers. Dominique recommends a warm mozzarella salad with radicchio and rocket. The Lindeman’s Early Harvest Rosé is vibrant pink in colour with aromas of fresh raspberry and cherry fruit flavours. Served chilled, this wine complements Dominique’s steamed seafood and noodle salad with Asian flavours. For those after something a little fuller, the Lindeman’s Early Harvest Shiraz is a light to medium-bodied red wine that showcases rich and fresh red fruits on the nose with dark berries, plums and subtle spice on the palate. This wine is the ideal partner to Dominique’s peppered lamb with beetroot fritters and broad bean and labne puree. Also included in the Early Harvest range is the Lindeman’s Early Harvest Semillon Sauvignon Blanc. The Lindeman’s Early Harvest range is available at bottle shops nationally. For more of Dominique’s recipes go to www.lindemans.com.au *Lindeman’s Early Harvest is at least 25 per cent lighter in alcohol and calories when compared to comparable Lindeman’s Bin and Reserve wines.

gut feeling
Sluggishness, heaviness and gut discomfort are feelings most people have experienced at one time or another. But with increasingly demanding lifestyles taking their toll, digestive discomfort is quickly escalating on the list of Australians’ health concerns. Ski® Ambassador and nutritionist Dr Joanna McMillan said “Through my work I have become aware of the increasing gastro-intestinal discomfort a huge proportion of Australians, particularly women, suffer on a regular basis. It’s a result of a number of factors, such as poor eating habits, travel, stress and lack of exercise.” Probiotics have long been accepted as an important part of a balanced eating plan for positive digestive balance. Now the team of nutritionists at Ski have helped formulate a new generation yoghurt. Ski®Activ® Digestion contains an exclusive combination of a prebiotic plus probiotics – including scientifically proven Bifidus ProDigestis™ – to help restore natural digestive balance the first combination of its kind in Australia. “What makes this yoghurt so effective is the combination of a prebiotic with probiotics – or friendly bacteria’. The prebiotic is ‘food’ for the probiotic ‘good’ bacteria, helping them thrive in the digestive system. Together, the inclusion of a prebiotic plus probiotic cultures help promote the growth of beneficial bacteria, Bifidobacterium and Lactobaccilli, found naturally in the gastrointestinal tract to help restore the balance in your digestive system. “The team at Ski is so confident they have set a 14 Day Challenge for consumers. Incorporate at least a 150 gram serve of Ski®Activ® into your balanced diet and if you don’t feel more comfortable in 14 days, you get your money back,” said Dr McMillan. For more go to www.skiactiv.com.au.
the good oil
Many nutritionists believe extra virgin olive oil should be part of everybody’s eating plan. Olive oil consumption has been shown to breakdown fats inside fat cells, get rid of belly fat and reduce insulin insensitivity. Studies have found you may encourage weight loss if you replace saturated fats with mono-saturated fats, the kind found in Cobram Estate Australian Extra Virgin Olive Oil. And it doesn’t stop there, Cobram Estate also contains vitamins A, D, K and E, which help protect against free radicals and cell oxidation, and high levels of antioxidants, including polyphenols, vitamin E, chlorophyll and carotenoids. It’s sold at most supermarkets, or for more go to www.cobramestate.com.au where you’ll also find some great recipes.
Relocating to their gorgeous new salon at Marina Mirage has allowed Eve M. Kelly from Là Beauty the opportunity to expand her beauty services. The move to the luxurious new surroundings has enabled Là Beauty to expand their beauty services to include two warmly decorated and inviting pamper rooms where clients are offered a private retreat for all their beauty requirements. Eve’s meticulous approach to skin care and lifelong commitment to offering leading, non-invasive skin care procedures have seen the recent introduction of the highly developed cosmetic range Skeyndor to the Là Beauty salon. This Spanish cosmetic brand uses biotechnological, marine and vegetal origin raw materials to produce their premium product and Là Beauty clients are thrilled with the results this new technology is providing. Là Beauty has also upgraded their Guinot techniques to include the new generation Hydradermie treatment known as Double Ionisation. “The important thing to remember is that there are many non-invasive, non-surgical options for correcting and enhancing your skin without downtime and without negative side effects such as redness and flaking,” said Eve. zimi more
This summer, Melbourne custom couture label Mister Zimi is taking you on a colourful journey reminiscent of a Mexican rhapsody. For this, the next chapter of her hugely successful spring collection, designer Zoe Paul has created a vibrant colour bomb of easy silk dresses, Peter Pan collared blouses, culottes, light as air leather separates, and, of course, the Mister Zimi signature gypsy maxi skirt, all just in time for a long, hot summer. The collection is a mix of lime, tangerine and grape with the introduction of the new Mexican print – a fun, primary zigzag pattern. Mister Zimi’s collection includes four key swimwear styles in fun vintage fabrics, bright solids and the designer’s favourite, a vintage Burberry ‘cherry blossom’ fabric sourced overseas. These are turned into statement asymmetrical one piece suits, cute 50s high waist styles and classic bikinis, all made to order of course. To see the whole collection go to www.misterzimi.com

The more we learn about detoxing and cleansing, the more sense it makes as a way of promoting good health, from the inside. Simone Jones at The Colonic Clinic in Burleigh Heads specialises in the procedure and says Colon Hydrotherapy is a treatment that almost anyone can benefit from. The range of health benefits is surprisingly long and varied, with common effects including sinus drainage, a loosening of mucous in the lungs, improved range of motion (including core flexibility), skin tightening, feeling younger, clearing up of acne and skin conditions, improved posture, abdomen softening and shrinking, relief of headaches, less fatigue and improved bowel function. Simone says there are common misconceptions about the procedure itself and the results that can be achieved, but the procedure is surprisingly private and comfortable. “When you mention colon hydrotherapy, most people instantly think of an embarrassing and uncomfortable procedure, and that isn’t the case at all,” she says. “At The Colonic Clinic, the procedure is done with a pencil thin tube, which you insert in complete privacy. There is no embarrassment or discomfort.” The device used at The Colonic Clinic uses gravity fed warm filtered water, which is infused into the colon for up to 45 minutes, giving a thorough cleanse. The procedure helps stimulate the colon’s natural peristalsis, which aids in the removal of waste and toxins that have accumulated in the large intestine (patients can lose up to five kilos of accumulated waste after a colon cleanse). Clients say the effect is often life changing, treating a variety of problems such as fatigue, depression, constipation, headaches, migraines, irritable bowel, poor digestion, anxiety, diarrhea, sluggish bowel, skin problems and sinus. It can also aid in weight loss. To learn more about the procedure call The Colonic Clinic on 07 5520 3887 or go to www.thecolonicclinic.com.au

my cup runneth over
No matter what your cup size, wearing the wrong bra, let alone exercising in it, can be really uncomfortable and a little embarrassing. Worse, it distracts you from what you are trying to achieve. The Eveden Group, a UK based company that specialises in bras, lingerie and swimwear for fuller figures, say feedback from their customers pointed to a need for a comfortable exercise bra for women with larger busts. So they launched Freya Active, their non-compression design. As the name suggests, it’s designed to sit on your skin rather than press on it, as opposed to other designs based on compressing the breasts into the chest frame to minimise movement, which works for some, but is unsuitable for larger busts. The soft cup and underwire sports bras feature the non-compression cut and sewn cup, use double fabric and built up padded straps for firm support and an inner sling which extends to the shoulder strap for extra support and to reduce bounce. Janine Fisk, General Manager for The Eveden Group in Australia and New Zealand, said of the range, “A sports bra, like your every day bra, should fit to perfection. This means being fitted by a professional to make sure you are wearing the right back size and cup size. No matter how full you are in the bust, there is no reason why you cannot have a healthy exercise routine if you are wearing a good sports bra.” RRP $94.95 from Myer and boutiques.
If you are dreaming of a washboard tummy (or at least one that doesn’t hang over your jeans!) add this little gem to your daily routine. Simply contract your core abdominal muscles, hold for a few seconds, and release. Start by doing ten at a time, a couple of times a day. Build it up until it becomes second nature.
The makers of Siberian Red (an extract taken from Siberian Fir trees) say that inside every fresh Siberian fir needle is a multitude of pure essential nutrients and potent antioxidants. The elixir is 100% natural, doesn’t contain caffeine and is reported to be the highest liquid form of antioxidants available. Devotees, such as marathon swimmer Chloe McCarde say just a few drops in water everyday gives them more energy, boosts their immune system, and increases endurance. The extract, perfected by Russian scientists over 80 years of research were until recent times kept as state secrets by the former Soviet Union, but these days you can get Siberian Red from Chemmart and Amcal Max. not so sweet
Think diet sodas can’t make you overweight? Think again. Researchers at the Texas Health Science Center tracked over 400 people, for almost a decade, measuring their height, weight, waist circumference, and diet soft drink intake. The results showed that the waists of those who drank diet soft drinks grew 70% more than those who didn’t. And those who drank two or more servings a day had waist-circumference increases that were five times larger than non-dietsoda consumers. But if it doesn’t have sugar or fat, how can it add weight? Researchers say we’re too smart for our own good: our brain can tell the difference. They say the ingredients in a diet soda can trigger the appetite, then do nothing to satisfy it, leading to cravings and snacking. They also claim the sweet taste could also trigger your body to produce insulin, which blocks your ability to burn fat.
science without the stuff It’s not too difficult to make small changes to achieve a more natural lifestyle; one where we aren’t filling ourselves and our children with chemicals and additives. But when it comes to our health and wellbeing, especially if we are in discomfort, it is very difficult to put away the pain killers and hope a cup of chia-infused camomile will do the trick. Ethical Nutrients’ range of natural medicines, vitamins and supplements (for women, men, and children’s health, pain relief, anxiety and stress relief, energy boosters and more) gives you the best of both worlds. The products are based on stringently tested scientific research and made using raw materials and ingredients, avoiding many of the commonly used manufacturing excipients (a substance that is inactive, added to carry the active substance), artificial fillers and synthetic binders. Some of the commonly used fillers, binders and synthetic additives are polyvinylpyrrolidone, crospovidone, shellac, yeast, wheat starch (gluten), soy, dairy protein (casein) and rancid oils. Ethical Nutrients use only natural, nonreactive vegetable gums and cellulose as fillers and binders. Ethical Nutrients is available through health food stores and pharmacies, and most pharmacists can discuss the products with you. For more call 1800 777 648 or go to www.ethicalnutrients.com.au

throwing in the towel There’s no denying that we live in a ‘throw away’ society, but an innovative, disposable beauty product is giving a positive spin on 21st century living. It may be light, compact and come in a tiny package, but the founders of one of the country’s leading biodegradable towels say the benefits are anything but small. Hair salons are among the first to be wrapped up in the bio-towel fever, according to OZ E Towel Company founder Nicole Hill. “A hair salon can spend up to $1.20 laundering a towel, but by making the switch to biodegradable towels they can save more than 40% on power consumption,” says Ms Hill. She says not only are the towels cost-effective and great for the environment, they are hygienic, 10 times more absorbent than cotton towels, and easy to store. “The towels are made from certified, renewable wood sources such as spruce or pine, so they disappear in landfill usually within about three months.” Lee Black, the owner of Mow Hair in Main Beach on the Gold Coast, has been using the OZ E Towel products for months. “Our water and power savings have been dramatic and our clients have all been willing to support our endeavours to contribute to environmental sustainability,” says Mr Black.
Glass by name and glass by design – that is the concept behind Glass Dining and Lounge Bar at Marina Mirage. Situated slightly above the luxury boats moored in the Marina and with panoramic views of the Broadwater and beyond this is a destination that has very quickly become an institution with locals and visitors alike. Designed by powerhouse Gold Coast architectural practice DBI Design, the restaurant is literally a place to see and be seen. The floor to ceiling glass gives patrons the chance to enjoy the uninterrupted views while also allowing for the passing parade to look in and see who is enjoying what and with whom. The refurbishment of Marina Mirage was created so that anyone standing at the Eastern end of the famous shopping complex could look west and see through to the Marina. The $1.4 million fit out by owners Patrik Gennari and Shanan Harmelin has enhanced both their eatery and the beauty of this iconic shopping centre. The bar cost over $80,000, the kitchen, yes, it too is open for all to see, features a glass (what else) range hood with neon lights and allows diners to enjoy the sights and sounds of having a working kitchen buzzing away in the background. Of course, as beautiful as it is, all that expense and effort would mean nothing if the restaurant was not producing food and service of the highest order. Industry favourite Shanan Harmelin runs the front of house with a friendly efficiency that belies the effort required to make everything look serene. The metaphor of a swan gliding across the water whilst paddling furiously is an apt one. Executive chef David Pommier oversees a kitchen constantly striving to achieve the very best for each and every client. The menu is constantly updated depending upon the seasonal produce available. Some recent notable inclusions to the list of entrees include Pan Seared Scallops with prawn toast, sweet corn puree and a sesame oil emulsion. Another addition is the mouth watering Roasted Baby Quail in Serano ham with sage and drunken sultanas, coco and apricot puree with petite mustard green in noir balsamic butter. To the mains chef David Pommier has introduced a stunning version of the always popular confit of Bangalow Pork Belly adding celery custard, poached scallop, salmon boudin accompanied by an apple and walnut crumble. All are as delicious as they sound. For more information or bookings phone 5527 1009 or visit glassrestaurant.com.au
get active, brasilian style There is something about Brazilian women – they manage to look fantastic no matter what they are doing. So it comes as no surprise that the Brasilia Active range looks as good as it performs. Brasilia Active founder Raquel Tudor, with 10 years’ experience as a gym instructor, personal trainer and group fitness leader, said the superior Supplex fabric incorporated into all garments provides a unique level of comfort, while the ‘made in Brasil’ element gives a unique, sexy flair. “Brazilians have mastered the art of looking fantastic while carrying out any activity; even sweaty workouts!,” she said. “After a decade of working in the market, I understand the importance of selecting materials made from quality fabrics that are not going to fall apart after one wash. Brasilia Active products are comfortable but firm, provide a freedom of movement, and most importantly help you feel great. “Given Australians’ increasingly time-poor lifestyle I wanted to provide an online boutique for women of all ages looking for a distinctively sexy look. Australians can now have access to products made by top Brasilian manufacturers at the click of a button. I know I don’t want to look like everyone else at the gym, and demand a high quality product, which is why the range I have chosen is not readily available in other outlets,” she said. Brasilia Active wear offers a flat $6.95 shipping rate nationally, with sizes to suit women of all ages. For more information go to www.brasiliaactive.com.au

A Course in Weight Loss, 21 Spiritual Journeys for Surrendering Your Weight Forever Marianne Williamson
What is the connection between spirituality and weight loss? Best selling author Marianne Williamson attempts to answer that question in her book, bringing you 21 spiritual lessons to help you surrender your weight forever. These lessons address the spiritual, emotional and psychological elements involved in what Williamson refers to as “conscious weight loss.” If you are a food addict, a compulsive eater, or someone who for any reason sees food as the enemy, this book is for you. A Course in Weight Loss addresses the causal root of your weight loss issues, “A place within you where you have forgotten your divine perfection,” the author says. Williamson says his forgetfulness has confused not only your mind, but also your body, making you reach for that which cannot sustain you, and reject that which does. Williamson claims that as your mind reclaims its spiritual intelligence, your body will reclaim its natural intelligence as well. The author promises to take you on a deep, sacred journey. “One step at a time, you will learn to shift your relationship with yourself—and your body—from one of fear to one of love,” Williamson says. “And you will begin to integrate the various parts of yourself—mind, body, and spirit—to become, once again, and in all ways, the beautiful and peaceful person you were created to be. “When it comes to your enjoyment of eating, your best days are not behind you but ahead of you!” So get ready to begin a new relationship with food... and with yourself.”

with food M
any of us have a rocky relationship with food – one moment you are in control and the next moment, you find yourself, five biscuits later, ok ten, consumed with guilt and too many kilojoules. Learning how to respect food and understand why you are eating and what you are eating can help. Accredited practicing dietitian and member of the Medical Advisory Board for Jenny Craig, Karen Inge, and Jenny Craig consultant Adele Gerali share with SLIM readers five factors that can help you develop a healthy relationship with food.
1. Eat the Foods You Love
When people go on a diet they often ban foods they love. Instead of polarising foods, just eat smaller portions. For example, if your favourite foods are high in kilojoules and low in nutrients, make them ‘sometimes foods’ instead of ‘every day’ foods. Diets that are well balanced and don’t exclude food are easier to follow and most often achieve better results. When you make the decision to change your eating habits, it’s important to embark on a plan that ultimately teaches you to respect food. “Our (Jenny Craig) members can still have foods such as lasagne, pizza and even pavlova on the program, but we teach correct portion size,” said Adele.
2. Be a Mindful Eater
Many people use food as a comfort or a reward. If you learn to eat only when hungry and stop when satisfied, you will begin to understand when you are full and therefore will not overeat. Quite often, people feel guilty after consuming an entire bag of lollies or a block of chocolate – you won’t have to beat yourself up emotionally if you learn to recognize when your hunger is satisfied.
3. Record your food intake
Adele says recording food intake is an important and easy way to monitor what goes into your body and helps avoid overeating, “At weekly Jenny Craig consultations, we go over food journals and many members say seeing what they consumed in a day helped them eat correct portions and not indulge.”
Accredited practicing dietitian Karen Inge (left) says our relationship with food is the most important factor in weight loss success; Jenny Craig consultant Adele Gerali has achieved weight loss success for many of her clients including television personality Chrissie Swan (pictured right).
4. Respect the Food You Eat
Take time to think about what you are eating. Understand how it was produced and grown, and learn the nutritional value. When served attractively on the plate, you will appreciate the nutritious meal in front of you and be sure to eat slowly, enjoying every taste, texture and flavour of the dish. “Helping people understand how to manage weight by focusing on self-awareness, nutrition, activity and gradual behaviour change, without deprivation is the best way to ensure that they hit a goal weight, and more importantly, stay there,” Karen said.
5. Enjoy the Social Aspects of Eating
So much of our interaction with people is based around eating. Don’t deny yourself these experiences because you may start to resent your diet; instead, adapt your eating style to your social life. “Dining out doesn’t mean you have to order only veggies or a salad. Make smart decisions while out; stop when you’re full, savour the food, enjoy the company and you can walk away from the table without feeling guilty,” concluded Karen. Karen and Adele say that by utilising these tips, you can begin to develop a healthy and respectful relationship with food. Having a constructive and healthy relationship can help you reach your ideal body weight and maintain a healthy weight. slim-magazine.com.au 27
cover story
stroke of
genius Giaan Rooney seems to have it all: a fantastic career, her recent wedding to the man of her dreams, movie star looks and a knockout body. But none of this came easy. It took hard work, dedication and a keen desire to win.
G
iaan Rooney first came to Australia’s attention when she burst onto the international swimming scene at the age of 15, winning gold in the 100m backstroke at the 1998 Commonwealth Games. Since then she has gone on to win Olympic medals, world championship titles and more Commonwealth Games’ medals. The country has fallen in love with her determination, dedication and that trademark million dollar smile. When she left professional swimming behind her, it seemed almost inevitable that the beautiful young Giaan would take up a media post, and she did, signing on with Channel Nine for a variety of hosting jobs, and quickly becoming an audience favourite. 2011 saw a personal milestone for Giaan when she married her partner, helicopter pilot Sam Levett. This issue, we spoke to Giaan to get the low down on her fabulous career thus far, dieting, and why she doesn’t like to swim anymore. How did you first start swimming competitively? Swimming must have been my fate as I really just fell into it. I was at my primary school swimming carnival as an 11-year-old when a friend asked if I wanted to join a swimming club with her. I said yes and loved it straight away. It started as two afternoons a week and quickly grew from there, with my first real competition being the regional swimming titles a year later. It must take an enormous amount of motivation to train to be an elite athlete. Have you always been highly motivated? I think everyone is motivated when they find something they love to do and want to do more of it. I loved being in the water, and while I struggled at training most of the time, I loved racing; it was my favourite thing in the world. In a sport that is won and lost by a margin of hundredths of a second, training and motivation are incredibly important. I wanted to feel success every time I raced, and that meant I had to make the most of every single training session. But there is no motivation like singing the National Anthem on the winners’ dais at a major competition! Do you believe motivation is something that can be gained or taught? And if so how? I definitely believe motivation can be gained. It is simply a matter of finding a reason to be motivated. If something means enough to you, you are going to do everything in your power to make it happen, even setting the alarm for 4.45 am! The harder task is to be motivated to do things you don’t like doing, I’m still trying to work on a solution for that one! Tell us what it feels like to win? What goes through your mind? Winning can only be described as the most natural high on earth. It makes all the blood, sweat and tears instantly worthwhile, and in a sport like swimming, can motivate you for years after the win. My favourite memories of my swimming days are those that involved me singing the Australian national anthem with a gold medal hanging around my neck. Nothing can describe the elation and the pride at that point. Still to this day I get emotional singing the national anthem, it brings all those proud moments flooding back. When you gave up competitive swimming, how did your exercise routine change? My exercise routine could not be more different since retiring from swimming. As an athlete I knew exactly what my week looked like before it even started; I could tell you where I was going to be at any hour of every day. It really was ‘groundhog day’ every day. I would train in the water for around five-six hours a day, six days a week, with three gym sessions a week on top of that. Now I have no routine in my life. I have the same issues as everyone else when it comes to including exercise into my daily routine. I never thought it was something you had to make time for. The funny thing is, I never swim. I loved the racing component of swimming, so if I can’t do that part it doesn’t interest me at all, which means I have had to find other ways to exercise. I love walking my dog, Pilates, Bikram Yoga and ‘at home’ exercise like EA Sports Active. I also take a skipping rope with me when I travel. Do you ‘diet’ or watch what you eat? Could you describe for us a typical day’s menu for you? I certainly don’t diet but it is the first time in my life that I actually have to be aware of what I eat. When you are doing six or seven hours of exercise a day you can eat whatever you want, whenever you want, and as much of it as you can get. I thought my brain would naturally stop craving that amount once I stopped that level of exercise, but no, it wanted what it had always had. That is why breaking bad habits is so important. Now I have three meals a day plus a couple of nutritious snacks in which I try to include plenty of fruit, vegetables, nuts and wholegrains. With my job as a travel and sport presenter I often have little choice over certain meals but always try to take the most nutritious option.

Five minutes with Giaan My all time favourite food is... Pasta. The talent I wish I had but don’t is… To be able to sing or play a musical instrument. I refuse to... Smoke or take drugs. I feel great when... I am in love. The person I most admire is... I admire those who unselfishly give up their lives to help others. My pet peeve is… Those drivers who sit in the overtaking lane doing 10 kms below the speed limit. The thing that always makes me laugh is... Listening to Hamish and Andy or watching a Lawrence Mooney Comedy Show. My favourite way to stay active is... Walking with my dog, Lester. What I most value in my friends is... Loyalty. I did it once, but never again will I... Be an elite athlete! My idea of bliss is… A massage or a hammock on a hot day with a good book. My idea of the depths of misery is… Having the flu or fighting with a friend.
You have always kept in shape as a result of your sport, but does your current role as a TV presenter affect the way you approach health and fitness? My approach and my ideas of health and fitness have changed dramatically since my swimming days. I could quite happily be a couch potato, and strangely enough my health has never been better since I retired. I think when you are pushing your body to such extremes every day your immune system is always struggling to keep bugs at bay. I had no idea what it was like to bounce out of bed. My trade off is that not only do I love food, but I want to live a long time and to do that I need to keep my health and fitness at optimum levels. So while it is no longer my job, health and exercise are still very important to me. You were recently married, congratulations, what other plans do you have for 2012? I love being married, at heart I really am an old school romantic and love the idea of a partnership for life. I am also looking forward to being a part of the Channel Nine coverage of the London Olympics next year. While I don’t wish I was there competing, I love cheering on the athletes and being involved in the buzz of an Olympics. London should put on a great show. You are the Face Care Ambassador of Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula, and you look absolutely gorgeous in the latest ad campaign. How do you keep your skin looking so great? Thank you. My skin and hair have never been better since I stopped bathing in chlorine everyday, but I honestly credit Palmer’s with the condition it is in. Palmer’s Cocoa Butter was the only product that could deal with the effects of chlorine on my skin, so I have been a devotee for over 10 years. Now I love the Facial Care Range and in particular the Repair Serum, which brings any part of my body needing a little extra TLC back to life.
Want to get Giaan’s fresh faced glow? SLIM has five fabulous Palmer’s Facial Care Packs to give away. The packs include everything you need to get your skin looking its best including Gentle Daily Cleanser, Rejuvenating Facial Serum, Daily Cleansing Gel, Purifying Mask, Gentle Exfoliating Facial Scrub, Line Smoothing Eye Cream, Daily Facial Lotion, and Daily Calming Facial Lotion. It’s one of the most important factors in a healthy lifestyle, and plays a significant roll in successful weight loss. So why do we undervalue a good night’s sleep?
W
ith our hectic lifestyles, sleep deprivation is a common ailment, with the average adult sleeping for only six or seven hours each night (compared to the ‘dusk till dawn’ sleeping patterns of our ancestors). Most scientists agree that good quality sleep is important for restoring physical and mental health. Think of how great you feel after a decent nights’ sleep. Sleep refreshes the mind and repairs the body. Lack of sleep, or sleep deprivation, has been found to cause fatigue, poor concentration and poor memory. It also impacts on our moods, delays reaction time, impairs our judgement, and results in poor physical coordination. Some researchers have compared the effects of sleep deprivation to that of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol. But even with all we know about sleep, many of us are prepared to sacrifice a good nights’ sleep, believing another commitment or activity is more important (how many of us have stayed up half the night finishing off a child’s costume, or wrapping presents, getting the ironing done?). If we want optimum health and wellbeing we need to recognise the importance of sleep and work toward enjoying longer, more restful sleeps. But that is easier said than done. For most of us, the stresses, strains and demands of everyday life mean getting a good nights’ sleep can be challenging. But with a few simple lifestyle changes, and some help from science, you will be sleeping soundly in no time.
ZZZZZ FACT: That old adage about drinking warm milk before bed is based on fact. Milk contains an amino acid called tryptophan which acts as a sort of sedative. Banana, oats and honey also contain it. 32 slim magazine SUMMER 2012
Tips for getting a good night’s sleep The environment in which you sleep has a huge impact on your sleep habits. For some people, particularly light sleepers, the slightest change in temperature, noise levels or light levels can prompt them to wake or have disturbed sleep. Regardless of whether you are a heavy or light sleeper, it is important to make sure your sleeping environment comfortable and suitable. Establish a regular sleep pattern to condition your body. Have clean, comfortable bedding. If there is outside noise, use earplugs. Use heavy curtains or blinds to block out excess light. Use the bathroom before bed. Have some water beside the bed so if you wake thirsty, you don’t have to get out of bed. Avoid stimulants such as caffeine. Try a supplement such as Ethical Nutrients Sleep Enhance. If you do need to get out of bed, try to stay in a sleepy mode, with eyes half shut. Avoid turning on bright lights which will wake you further.
ZZZZZ FACT: Sleep deprivation causes fatigue. Fatigue causes approximately one road accident in six.

Ethical Nutrients, a leading name in professional natural medicines, has released Sleep Enhance, a product scientifically proven to assist with sleep problems in a natural way. Clinical trials have proven that Sleep Enhance can: Reduce the time it takes to fall asleep. Reduce night time waking. Increase total sleep time. Relieve insomnia. A key ingredient of Sleep Enhance is Panatonin, a non-addictive herbal extract which has been found to be a valuable treatment for the relief of insomnia. The effects of Panatonin were documented in an uncontrolled study of 90 adults with insomnia (where the criteria for inclusion included three of the following): Time to sleep onset in excess of one hour. Total sleep duration of 4 hours or less. Easy waking, copious dreaming. Symptoms of dizziness, headache, fatigue or palpitations. Using Panatonin daily, for a period of 15 days, was effective in 88.8% of participants. The herbal extract was found to increase total sleep time, reduce the length of time to sleep onset, and decrease the frequency of wakening through the night. Following treatment with Panatonin, 76 patients (84.4%) were able to sleep for at least 7 hours. In those who still experienced waking during the night, most were able to fall asleep again within 10 minutes. Panatonin also eliminated insomnia associated symptoms, and was found to be better tolerated; resulting in less upset tummies (only two of the participants experienced mild stomach upsets). Panatonin has also been found to reduce symptoms of anxiety.
This herbal extract was found to increase sleep time, reduce the length of time it takes to get to sleep, and decrease the amount of times participants woke throughout the night. slim-magazine.com.au 33

It’s a cover up! An oversized t-shirt just won’t cut it. When it comes to covering up, there is so much more fun to be had.
W
hen you’re not a size 0, choosing swimwear can be downright depressing. Everything in ‘normal’ sizes seems to be too tight, and too small, and it doesn’t cover up the bits you want it to. And everything in the ‘larger’ sizes looks as if it was designed for someone twice your age. Not exactly a great way to give you that sexy summer feeling. But finally, there is a swimwear brand that ticks all the boxes. Stylish, affordable, high quality swimwear designed for ‘real women’. It’s Capriosca Swimwear: fun, sexy swimwear designed to flatter and enhance a woman’s form and make her feel beautiful. The ranges take influence from the season’s trends, so your cozzies will be fabulously fashionable. Then durable, high-performance stretch fabric is generously contoured to shape and flatter women of all ages, from size 10 to 22. It’s all about flattering your figure; making the most of what you’ve got. Capriosca is designed to enhance the good bits, and cover up the bits you’re not so fond of. Innovative details include a lower leg, wider shoulder straps to offer better support, and a more generous cup size (up to an F). Those with fuller figures will appreciate the clever use of ‘power-netting’ which discreetly lines the stomach and waist area. The advanced fabrication firms and smooths any unwanted bumps to create an elegant silhouette. Capriosca offers an array of colourful, fun, alternative designs. Gorgeous Indian-inspired paisleys, pretty florals, checks and bold splashes of colour combine with unique details such as elegant rouching, singlet-style bikini tops and playful bikini skirts. These elements not only look great, they help disguise ‘problem’ areas to ensure women of all shapes and sizes look and feel great. www.caprioscaswimwear.com.au
Not all of us are confident enough to wander around in nothing but swimmers once we are out of the water, so it’s important to have a good cover up. A kaftans is a great choice as they look good on nearly every size and come in a fantastic range of fabrics, from printed silks to sheers. A sexy black sheer kaftan over black swimwear can be incredibly flattering no matter what your size. Shorts are still a great option, especially denim cut offs. Slips are a fantastic cover up. Second hand stores usually have a great range of vintage underwear where you can find slips in all sizes and colours. They look perfect over swimwear and are a great, lightweight option. The sarong never goes out of fashion. Experiment with different ways of wearing it to suit your body. The ‘boyfriend shirt’ looks great over swimwear. Vintage stores are great places to pick up a business shirt. White and light blue always look great. Choose one a few sizes too big for you. The shape of these shirts is flattering over swimwear. Roll the sleeves up and you are good to go.

Model: Ally Liva wears Capriosca Metallic Coral Underwire Bikini Top RRP $65 with Crossover Pant RRP $40.
B ody type: Small bust Choose: Girls with large busts envy your ability to go braless and wear those cute little tops and singlets. Look for tops with detailing and or padding to make the most of what you’ve got. B ody type: Large bust Choose: Girls with smaller busts would give anything for your killer cleavage so make the most of it. Choose swimwear with support built in. Go for a slightly wider strap; there is nothing sexy about straps cutting into your skin. B ody type: Short legs Choose: Go for high cut rather than boy legs. If you wear a two piece, choose a pattern on top and block colour down below. This draws the eye up. A plunging neckline on a one piece is another sexy option. B ody type: Long body Choose: Most people would see your body type as a blessing, so celebrate it. What you want to avoid is looking like a bean pole. Choose swimwear with stripes, in any direction, and embellishments around the hips and waist. This will break up your long lines just enough to be flattering. B ody type: Thick waist Choose: Don’t have curves naturally? No problem. Create them yourself by choosing swimwear with draping or rouching near the waist. Avoid horizontal stripes, but look for patterns that create the illusion of a waist. B ody type: Plus size body C hoose: It’s easy to think ‘I’m too big to ever look good in swimwear’. Easy, but not true. With labels like Capriosca Swimwear, designed to flatter your figure no matter what your size, anyone can look sensational this summer. The trick is to be confident. Don’t go for bike shorts and a large t-shirt. This isn’t a flattering look, and you are actually drawing more attention to your figure. Take some time to find the right swimsuit, one you feel comfortable and supported in.
Whatever shape you are, whatever shape you’re in, Capriosca has a selection of styles that will flatter your figure and give you sexy summer confidence Available in sizes 10 to 26.

secrets
With Taryn Swift, dietitian APD, WeightLoss Solutions Australia
Do you ever leave the grocery store spending more than you had planned, or buying things you didn’t need? What happens to all this extra food, do you it eat because you don’t like wasting food?
M
uch time and money is spent researching consumer behaviour. Every detail, from supermarket design to product placement and food packaging, is based on data about our shopping habits. The intention is to make you buy more, regardless of whether you need it or not.
Lets explore some of the common supermarket secrets Most supermarkets have fresh produce such as flowers, fruit and vegetables at the entry to the store; this sets the scene of freshness, and makes us feel good about ourselves for stocking up on healthy foods first. Research has found that most people travel around the perimeter of the supermarket, popping in and out of isles, rather than systematically moving up and down every isle. Therefore the ends of isles are the most profitable. Leading brands and bestsellers are usually placed at eye level on the shelves; manufacturers pay a premium for these effective selling spaces. Smaller, regional or gourmet brands are often on the higher shelves, and generic brands and bulk items on the lower shelves. Products

that appeal to kids are usually at kids eye level; beware of pester power when you take the kids grocery shopping. Some of the highest selling products are high energy, treat foods. These are often the foods you see stacked at the end of isles, usually on special, and can result in increased traffic to certain parts of the supermarket. Furthermore, consumers have an emotional response to packaging. Apparently, yellow packaging makes us feel hungry, blue products give a sense of trust, rich colours such as brown with gold or purple make us feel like we are buying a luxury product. Think, what do you feel when you see a packet of Tim Tams on the shelf? Chances are, if you are tired and hungry, you will be even more vulnerable to the emotive powers of marketing. So next time you are in the supermarket keep your wits about you. Try not to fall for the subtle, and not so subtle marketing tricks, which ultimately lead you to eat more than you need. Choose mostly foods from the core food groups: fruit, vegetables, wholegrains, dairy and lean meats. For more information go to www.wlsa.com.au

If you think you’ve tried everything and still can’t lose weight, think again. ORBERA® is giving real results and changing lives.

L
ike many of us, Vanessa had tried everything over the years to lose weight. She wasn’t sitting on the sofa eating donuts, she was working on losing weight. Even at her heaviest she was going to the gym up to five times a week – all to no avail. “Towards the end it was worrying that I was the most overweight girl at the gym,” she said. “I was really putting in the effort but not losing any weight and that was really frustrating.” Vanessa’s breakthrough came when she discovered a clinically proven program which is used by over 130,000 people around the world. The ORBERA® Managed Weight Loss Program is a non-surgical way to lose up to 15kg of excess weight within six months1-3, and maintain, on average, 89% of that weight loss two years later.3 “I was always on a diet” says Vanessa, “but my diets were usually based around cutting out whole food groups, rather than changing my eating habits. I realised I was fed up with the struggle, I just wanted something to physically help me.” One of the keys to losing weight and keeping if off is usually will power. To kick-start your weight loss and build your will power for the long term, the unique ORBERA® Managed Weight Loss Program combines two techniques. To retrain your body to actually want to eat less, a smooth saline-filled balloon is non-surgically and temporarily placed into your stomach via your mouth, in a medically supervised procedure that usually takes about 20-30 minutes. With this balloon in place, you feel fuller after eating less. ORBERA® supports your willpower by physically containing your hunger1 and kick-starting your weight loss. “It has been fantastic in teaching me about portion control” says Vanessa, “which has really been the key to my weight loss and something I hadn’t realised until the balloon was in place.” As Vanessa discovered, ORBERA® doesn’t just retrain your body, but retrains your mindset as well. For the six months that the balloon is in place and for another six months after its removal, you have the support of your own medically qualified lifestyle retraining team, who help you adopt lifestyle changes that assist in keeping weight off.4 In Vanessa’s own words: “I’ve really felt supported … talking through issues and things where you can identify where you’ve gone wrong in the past. Taryn (Vanessa’s dietitian) was great at providing guidance. This has been the first sensible, long term weight loss that I have succeeded at.” Vanessa has lost 13.5kg so far – and she’s pleased with the results. “The benefits I’ve gained through the weight loss are increased energy and feeling better in myself,” Vanessa said. “Just the other day I pulled out all my old clothes that hadn’t fit me for the last couple of years, and now most I can get back into. I have self confidence now, I really feel like the old me.” The ORBERA® Managed Weight Loss Program has been a godsend for many like Vanessa who’ve tried and failed to lose weight any other way. With a few tricks and tips, and a new approach to portion control, dining out after weight loss surgery is a breeze.

fter undergoing weight loss surgery, patients need to make some lifestyle adjustments such as choosing nutritious foods, eating smaller meals, eating slowly, chewing well and avoiding some food textures. While almost all patients find they are able to make these changes at home, dining out presented some challenges. Following weight loss surgery, it is still possible to eat out at your favourite restaurants and enjoy great food, but it can take a bit of practice, and planning ahead. Slim magazine recently attended one of WeightLoss Solutions Australia’s (WLSA) dining evenings, where patients can come together to discuss their common experiences, enjoy some fabulous food, and learn some tricks for eating out after surgery. This issue, we join the WLSA party at Southport’s famous food destination Ferry Road, where the patients strutted their stuff on the catwalk and enjoyed fine food and great company.
The Menu Entree Citrus cured ocean trout with fennel, orange and pomegranate salad, Tobiko caviar and lemon oil. Main Poached turkey tenderloin with cranberry, pistachio and orange crust, braised French lentil, caramelised onion and roast pumpkin. Dessert Plum pudding pannacotta with cherry jelly, sprayed in white chocolate fresh cherry and coulis.
Eating out tips from the experts “I order what I want from the menu, and when the food arrives I put the amount I know I can eat on a side plate for myself, then my family shares the rest of my meal between them. They love it!” – Maree “I like going to restaurants that offer a tapas menu, this way I can order one or two small plates of food.” – Heidi “When I go out to dinner I call ahead and ask the restaurant if they can serve me one of their mains, but 50% smaller than the usual size. I would rather do this than leave half the food on my plate and waste it. Most of the restaurants are happy to do this when I ring in advance.” – Bruce
What the guests had to say... “Thanks so much for inviting me to be part of the fun. We had a great night and the modelling was fun albeit a little nerveracking. To think this time a year ago I was getting ready for surgery and trying to imagine what life would be like now... I would never in a million years guess I’d be frocking up and doing a little catwalk!” – Heidi “We had a great night. It was so nice to meet some other patients. I look forward to more catch ups.” – Ellen “We had a wonderful night and hope that there will be more to enjoy in the future. Thank you all again for your support, encouragement, and genuine care. It will never be forgotten.” – Suzii “I had my procedure five years ago now and have lost 56 kilos. It was the best thing I ever did, and the Christmas dinner was a great way to celebrate.” – Dale “What a great night ! I am so grateful for my sleeve. This surgery has changed my life. I have lost 48 kilos and today was my one year sleeve anniversary.” – Heidi “I had my lap band four years ago and I went from 109 to 53 kilos. I am so happy. Thanks WeightLoss Solutions and Dr Layani for a great evening.” – Betty “I love the social aspect of evenings like this and the chance to eat delicious food and enjoy beautiful wine.” – Louise 42 slim magazine SUMMER 2012

how to make your

ution. new year’s resol
With psychologist Kerrie Woods, WeightLoss Solutions Australia
Research indicates that 78% of people who make a New Year’s resolution fail. So how do you ensure your New Year’s resolution is a success?
I
n order for successful and lasting change to be attained, there is a transformation process that takes place and it includes several stages. The transformation process is often referred to as “The Stages of Change” model. The model is very important because when you know what stage you’re in, you can develop strategies to move on from stage to stage, and ultimately achieve your goals.
The Stages of Change Model for Weight Loss Stage One: Pre-contemplation Stage: “I can’t/won’t lose weight” Many people in this stage don’t know their health is at risk. They are in denial, or have given up trying to lose weight. Your doctor, family or friends may be more concerned about your weight and health than you are. Strategies to move you forward: • Engage in some self-exploration. Be open and truthful about the effects your excess weight is having on you physically, emotionally and socially. • Evaluate your current behaviour in relation to diet, exercise, medications, etc. Stage Two: Contemplation Stage: “I want to lose weight but...” In this stage you might acknowledge that you have a weight problem, but you don’t take any action. Often you will swing between wanting to do something about your weight, and rejecting the idea. It is possible to be stuck in this stage for months, years, or even a lifetime. Strategies to move you forward: • G ather information on different weight loss strategies and programs. • Do a cost/benefit analysis. Compare the anticipated benefits or gains that you will get from losing weight with the anticipated losses or costs of taking action to lose weight. If there are more benefits than costs, you are ready to start preparing for change. Stage Three: Preparation Stage: “I’m going to lose weight” You are serious about weight loss and start preparing. This stage is also known as the Empowerment Stage, whereby you become proactive. It is recommended that you take time in this stage; a few months may be needed until you feel your determination increasing along with your self-esteem and perception of control. Strategies to move you forward: • Consult a healthcare provider to ensure you are on the right track. • C reate an action plan - include a list of specific actions; the modifications you are going to make to your diet and lifestyle. • Learn about nutrition and about how to adopt permanent lifestyle changes that will allow you to lose weight and keep it off. • During preparation you may even begin experimenting with small modifications or adjustments to your lifestyle that could affect your weight. • Set a weight loss goal. Make sure it is realistic; aim to lose from 0.5kg to one kg per week. Write your weight loss down and keep it somewhere prominent to remind you of your commitment.
44 slim magazine SUMMER 2012
My New Yea.r Resolution.. Lose Weight! Stage Four: Action Stage: “I’m losing weight” In the action stage you make definite changes to your eating and exercise habits. The effort you have invested in contemplation and preparation will begin to pay off now, and you will be actively losing weight and replacing unhealthy habits with new healthy ones. Strategies to move you forward: •G et to the heart of the matter. Identify what has caused you to gain weight in the first place and develop strategies to overcome whatever triggers there are. • Weigh-in weekly and keep a record of your progress. • Chart your exercise sessions and keep a food journal. • Make sure you reward yourself as you reach specific milestones. • Modify your environment – make it weight loss friendly (e.g. remove tempting foods from your house). • Encourage your family and friends to support, accept or even join you in your weight loss journey. Stage Five: Maintenance Stage: “I’ve met my weight loss goal” Once you have stuck to your new course of action for a minimum of six months, you are considered to be in the maintenance stage. During maintenance, you sustain the eating and exercise habits you have formed. People in this stage have already lost weight but still have to “practice” or consolidate their new healthy habits. Some people can stay in maintenance stage for months, even years. Strategies to move you forward: • Continue to monitor your weight. • Continue with the habits you used to lose weight and plan coping strategies to help you prevent going back to your old habits (known as relapses). • Keeping a food diary can help maintain weight loss. • Increase the variety in your diet; be on the lookout for new and exciting foods and/or recipes. • Keep your exercise routines fresh and new, challenge yourself to new and exciting routines, skills, etc.
Portion Control Studies have shown that the bigger the portion of food in front of us, the more we will eat. Large portion sizes, especially of energy dense foods and drinks, are contributing to our increasing waistlines. So how do we control just how much we consume?
Relapse: “Oops! I’ve slipped up” It is normal for people to relapse in this stage, but a lapse back into old patterns is no reason to give up. Many people involved in changing their behaviour struggle from time to time. It is normal to move back and forth through the stages before you establish a real and lasting lifestyle change, a change that will help you maintain a healthy weight. Strategies to move you forward: • Avoid being self-critical. • Use your failures as an opportunity to learn. Make adjustments accordingly. • Continue to monitor your weight. • Continue with the habits you used to lose weight and plan coping strategies to help you prevent weight gain. • Keep your goals in focus. Re-evaluate your current goals and adjust accordingly. • Enlist the support of others. Transformation Stage: “I’ll never be overweight again” At this stage, healthy habits have become second nature. Once you have reached this stage you have the tools to prevent future weight gain and be confident you will never be overweight again. Success is based on identifying the stage you are in and developing strategies to move you through to the next stage. May your 2012 New Year’s resolutions bring you much success, peace and happiness.

When it comes to maintaining a healthy body weight, managing portion sizes is an important strategy. The amount of food we consume is almost as important as the type of foods we consume. Studies have found that people will eat up to 30% more, without even realising it, when they are served a larger portion. A survey by Consumer Reports (the US version of Choice Magazine) compared the behaviours of three groups of people: those who had always been a healthy weight; those who had successfully lost weight; and those who have tried, but not succeeded, in losing weight. The survey found that carefully controlling portion sizes at each meal correlated most strongly with having a lower BMI. Of the three groups, those who had always been slim and those who had successfully lost weight regularly practiced portion control (it just came more naturally to those who were always slim, whereas those who had previously been overweight needed to work harder to consciously control portions). While it may sound simple – just eat less – reducing portion sizes can be challenging, especially for those who have adapted to needing more food to hit that all important point of satisfaction. For people who have at some time been overweight and then lost the excess weight, the body releases powerful signals, driving them to eat more. It takes quite an effort to override these feelings. While practicing portion control is essential, the good news is some foods can be eaten in large volumes, with no problems. The most important being vegetables. If you fill your plate with more vegetables than usual, and reduce the size of the other foods, you may feel less deprived when reducing portions. What you are doing is changing the structure of the meal. While the portion size may remain the same, the nutritional value, and the calorie content, has changed. So add lots of non starchy vegetables to the plate (it can be 1-3 cups of vegetables if you like) but carefully monitor other food groups. Another strategy to help you feel more satisfied with smaller portions is to have a vegetable based entree before the meal. Try a mixed vegetable soup, tomato soup, a garden salad or steamed asparagus. If you’re in a hurry, a small glass of reduced fat milk before a meal can also help to reduce your appetite, and feel more satisfied with your smaller portion. The Big C We’ve all heard of it, and know we have to keep it down, but exactly what is cholesterol? And why is it bad for us? Here is everything you need to know.
46 slim magazine SUMMER 2012
Limiting your intake of foods such as cakes, pastries, pies and biscuits will not only lower your saturated fat intake but also your trans fat intake.
H
ere’s the technical stuff. Cholesterol is a fatty substance which is produced naturally by your liver and found in your blood. You can also get cholesterol from some foods – ‘dietary cholesterol’. Dietary cholesterol is found only in animal products (such as offal, fatty meats, full fat dairy products and egg yolks). Your total blood cholesterol level includes two types of blood cholesterol: Low density lipoprotein (LDL) is also known as ‘bad’ cholesterol because it can add to the build-up of plaque in your arteries and increase your risk of getting coronary heart disease. High density lipoprotein (HDL) is also known as ‘good’ cholesterol because it helps to protect you against coronary heart disease. Cholesterol isn’t all bad; it’s used for many different functions in your body, but is a problem when there is too much of it in your blood. Most of the total cholesterol in your blood is made up of LDL cholesterol. Only a small part is made up of HDL cholesterol. It’s best to aim for a low LDL cholesterol level and a higher HDL cholesterol level.
MEASURING HIGH TOTAL BLOOD CHOLESTEROL Most people with a high total blood cholesterol level feel perfectly well and often have no symptoms. The best way to find out if your total blood cholesterol level is high is to have a blood test. Ask your doctor for more information. There are various causes of high total blood cholesterol: Saturated and trans fats: High total blood cholesterol levels are mainly caused by eating foods high in saturated and trans fats. Foods high in saturated fat include fatty meats, full fat dairy products, butter, coconut oil and palm oil, and most deep fried takeaway foods and commercially baked products, such as pies, biscuits, buns and pastries. Foods high in trans fat include most deep fried takeaway foods and commercially baked products, such as pies, biscuits, buns and pastries. Limiting your intake of foods such as cakes, pastries, pies and biscuits will not only lower your saturated fat intake but also your trans fat intake. Cholesterol in food: Cholesterol in food (dietary cholesterol) has only a small effect on LDL cholesterol. Saturated and trans fats in food cause a much greater increase in LDL cholesterol. You can include some cholesterol-rich foods, such as offal (liver, pâté and kidney) and prawns, as part of a healthy balanced diet low in saturated and trans fats. You can also eat up to six eggs a week as part of a healthy balanced diet low in saturated and trans fats without increasing your risk of coronary heart disease. Ask your doctor or dietitian for more information. Genetics: Your genetics also affect your blood cholesterol levels. Some people will still have a high total blood cholesterol level even if they follow a healthy balanced diet low in saturated and trans fats. These people may need to take cholesterol-lowering medicine as prescribed by their doctor.
Chocolate & cholesterol: Research shows that dark chocolate can improve heart health, lower blood pressure, and reduce LDL (bad) cholesterol.
Reducing high total blood cholesterol: Making lifestyle changes, in particular changing some of the foods you eat, is very important to help to reduce a high total cholesterol level or LDL cholesterol level. One important change is to choose healthier mono-unsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, and reduce the amount of saturated and trans fats you eat. You may also need to take cholesterol-lowering medicines, such as statins, to help you to manage your blood cholesterol levels and reduce your risk of having a heart attack or stroke. Talk to your doctor to find out the most appropriate treatment for you. slim-magazine.com.au 47
Healthy eating and cholesterol: You can help to lower a high total blood cholesterol level or LDL cholesterol level by changing some of the foods that you eat and following a healthy balanced diet low in saturated and trans fats. It’s important to replace foods that contain unhealthy saturated and trans fats with foods that contain polyunsaturated and mono-unsaturated fats. Foods high in polyunsaturated fats include margarine spreads and oils such as sunflower, soybean and safflower; oily fish; and some nuts and seeds. Foods high in mono-unsaturated fats include margarine spreads and oils such as olive, canola and peanut; avocados; and some nuts.
keep CHOLESTEROL at bay Use spreads and margarines made from canola, sunflower or olive oil, and dairy blends that have earned the Heart Foundation tick, instead of butter. Use a variety of oils for cooking – some suitable choices include canola, sunflower, soybean, olive, sesame and peanut oils. Use salad dressings and mayonnaise made from oils such as canola, sunflower, soybean, olive, sesame and peanut oils. Choose reduced, low or no fat milk, yoghurt, custard and desserts, or calcium added non-dairy food and drinks. Try to limit ice cream to three times a week. Have two to three serves (150 grams) of oily fish every week. The fish may be fresh, frozen or canned. Select lean meat (meat trimmed of fat and poultry without skin). Try to limit processed meats, including sausages, and deli meats, such as salami. Snack on plain, unsalted nuts and fresh fruit (aim to eat two serves of fruit every day). Choose wholegrain breads, cereal, pasta, rice and noodles. Try to limit takeaway foods, such as pastries, pies, pizza, hot chips, fried fish, hamburgers and creamy pasta dishes, to once a week. Try to limit salty, fatty and sugary snack foods, such as crisps, cakes, pastries, biscuits, lollies and chocolate, to once a week. Try to limit foods such as liver, kidneys and pâté. Include two or three serves of plant sterol enriched foods every day (for example, plant sterol enriched margarine, yoghurt, milk and bread). Include up to six eggs every week. Consuming foods low in refined carbohydrates and high in dietary fibre, particularly soluble fibre, can also reduce the level of LDL cholesterol in your blood. Foods containing soluble fibre include fruits, legumes (chickpeas, lentils, soybeans, four bean mix and baked beans) and cereals (oats and barley).
Eat plenty of vegetables – aim for five serves of vegetables every day.

Avoid the holiday
blow out Tips for staying healthy over the holidays
When Christmas comes it’s not just the goose who gets fat.
R
ecent studies have shown that the average Australian gain between 0.5kg and 1kg over the Christmas and New Year holiday. And it’s little wonder; just look at Christmas lunch alone. The traditional lunch with all of the trimmings, dessert and alcohol holds, on average, about 3500 calories and 130 grams of fat. Consider that it is suggested that women consume about 1800 calories a day, and men 2500; and no more than 50grams of fat per day, depending on the individual, it is easy to see why the holiday period can be disastrous for our health. Experts say it is not a matter of denying yourself or punishing yourself, over the holidays; rather, it is about making better choices. One of the reasons people can put on weight at this time of year is because there tends to be days and days of eating foods they usually wouldn’t eat in such large amounts. Foods such as ham, turkey, chocolates and desserts. And it’s not just the food, it’s the drinks as well; alcohol, fruit juice and soft drinks are consumed at this time of the year in larger quantities than at other times of the year. This can add up to a lot of calories. In Australia there are still a lot of families having big, hot lunches on Christmas day, when it would make more sense in our climate to choose things like seafood, and leaner options. Of course, making healthy choices over the holidays is the most desirable option, but if we do overindulge, we shouldn’t punish ourselves or go on crash or fad diets to compensate. Problems start to occur when people fall into dieting cycles where they overeat and then decide they have to do some drastic dieting to compensate. If you have overindulged this summer, and you want to lose weight or change your eating habits, you need to start by making small but lasting changes. There should be nothing frantic about it, or it won’t be sustainable.
50 slim magazine SUMMER 2012
Eat before you go to a party There are generally a lot of fatty snacks at parties so make sure you have something filling and healthy before you go, so you aren’t hungry when you are there. This way, you will only eat the foods you really enjoy. Eating before a party also helps ensure any alcohol you drink won’t hit your system as hard and as fast as it would if you had an empty stomach. Control your portions Of course you want to enjoy all the yummy treats that come with the festive season, but try to watch your portion size. When it comes to chips, chocolate and special snacks, avoid snacking from a large bowl or dish; rather, set yourself an amount and place that on a smaller plate and only eat that amount. This makes it easier to keep track of what you’ve eaten. Do the same thing with meals: have a little of everything. Limit foods high in fat There are so many fatty foods on offer over the holidays, and often it is easy to consume 100grams of fat simply by snacking on chips, dips, and cheeses. Try to get to know the fat content of foods so you can avoid overdoing it on the fatty items. Again, moderation is the key. Healthy drink choices Alcohol can pack on the weight just as fast as fatty foods. Try to make healthier choices when it comes to drinking: mix soda water with wine and spirits, and try to drink one-for-one water and alcoholic drinks. If you do overindulge, try not to fall into the ‘hangover food’ trap. Apple juice, miso soup and dry toast are all great cures for a hangover, but don’t have the calories of the fried food you might be craving. Exercise It’s easy to forget about exercise over the holidays, especially if you are away from home or your usual routine is broken. But try to incorporate some form of exercise every day. It can be a walk on the beach, a swim, or just kicking a ball around with the kids – just do something. To forgive is divine If, after all your good intentions, you do have a diet blow out this holiday season, don’t be too hard on yourself, and don’t let yourself fall into a diet slump. Move on and start fresh. With some sensible, healthy eating and exercise, you will be back on track in time for Easter!
Eating out, without blowing out Even the best planned diet can come unstuck at a Christmas party, birthday dinner or barbecue. Often the temptations are just too great. It takes real discipline, but there are plenty of tips and tricks to help you diet successfully without compromising a fun social life. RESTAURANT FOOD
Cocktail Parties
When faced with a delicious menu, it’s all too easy to let your stomach do the ordering rather than your brain. Here are some tips to help you stay on track when eating out in a restaurant:
After a couple of drinks and a few rounds of the hors d’oeuvres tray, you suddenly realise that you’ve consumed about 3,000 calories without even realising it. That’s a pretty typical experience around Christmas time, but there are simple ways to survive a cocktail party without putting on weight.
At buffets and smorgasboards, pick up the smallest plate you can find. Before dinner, drink a cup of green tea or some mineral water with a slice of lemon. Both will help to reduce your appetite. Going to a restaurant when you’re really hungry is tempting fate. If you have to have dessert, choose light options like a fruit plate or sorbet. Order an entrée size for your main meal. Portions have grown in recent years and you really don’t need more. Don’t order anything with sauce. That grilled chicken may sound light, but not if it’s drowning in a creamy sauce. Same goes for salad dressings. Order your food steamed, baked, grilled or poached, rather than fried or deep fried. Substitute a salad for the fries or potatoes that come with your meal.
Foods to avoid on the snacks table are samosas, chicken nuggets, etc. Stay away from anything fried or covered in sauce. Find a place far away from the snacks table and do all your socialising there. Don’t be one of the people loitering around the hors d’oeuvres. Limit yourself to one snack at a time. Eating slowly will help you eat less. Alcoholic Drinks When you have a birthday party or a work event to go to, it’s often extremely hard to avoid having a drink or two. Here are some tips to make sure you don’t ruin your diet in the process. Light beers have fewer calories and will help slow down your drinking.
If the waiter brings you bread before the meal, send it right back or you’ll end up full before the meal.
Order your drinks with soda water instead of tonic. Tonic has a surprising number of calories. Fruit juices are also full of sugar, so avoid them.
You don’t need to finish the whole meal, or have that extra helping. Most restaurants are happy to provide a doggy bag.
If you need to have a glass of wine, drink it with your meal rather than beforehand. Otherwise it will stimulate your appetite and destroy any willpower you have.
Be prepared to face diet saboteurs. When your friend says “go ahead, the cheesecake here is divine, one piece won’t hurt”, remember you chose a healthy main course, so why blow it with an extra 400 calories?
Most importantly, feel good about yourself. Know that feeling fit, healthy and fabulous will make you feel better than any food you can indulge in.

If you want to feel good, get fit and lose weight; Yoga and Pilates may be for you.
stretch +
strengthen
It was long believed that to lose weight and change your body shape you had to partake in cardio exercise, but research has shown that practices such as Yoga and Pilates can dramatically alter the shape of your body, giving you longer leaner lines, and improving overall health and wellbeing.
Yoga
The health benefits of Yoga have long been accepted by Western cultures but the practice of Yoga has never been as popular as it is now. The word ‘yoga’ means union in Sanskrit, the language of ancient India. It represents the union of mind, body and spirit. The stretching exercises practiced in most Yoga classes create a balance in the body and increase strength and flexibility. They can help prevent back pain caused by spinal compression from a sedentary lifestyle. Yoga breathing exercises, Pranayama, focus attention on the breath and teach us to use our lungs more effectively. Asana, or the practice of physical postures and poses, brings a calmness to the mind and helps relieve stress. The concentration required for the exercises helps to focus the mind in the here and now and leave the daily stress behind. Tension and emotional stress are often stored in certain areas of our body and some physical postures in Yoga can release stored emotional baggage. For example, loosening up the hips through a series of Yoga exercises can produce an urge to weep as long held emotions are let go. Some psychotherapists now use Yoga as a mental health tool. 52 slim magazine SUMMER 2012
Pilates Pilates is a twentieth century discipline developed in Germany by gymnast Joseph Pilates, who believed that mental and physical health are interrelated. He defines his method as using the mind to control the muscles. Pilates focuses on the core postural muscles that keep the body in balance and support the spine. Like Yoga it teaches awareness of breath and also concentrates on alignment of the spine. Joseph Pilates believed in circulating the blood so that it could awaken all the cells in the body and carry away the wastes related to fatigue. The blood needs to be charged with oxygen and purged of waste gases through proper breathing.
Yoga guide
There are so many different kinds of Yoga. Here is a guide to just a few of them. Hatha: is a widely practised form of Yoga using Asana (postures) and is the foundation for most other Yoga styles. Iyengar: this style of practice is primarily concerned with body alignment and poses are usually held over a long period. Bikram: also referred to as Hot Yoga as it is practised in a hot room which allows for a loosening of tight muscles and profuse sweating. It is considered cleansing. Ashtanga: a fast paced intense kind of Yoga involving constant movement. Kundalini: emphasis is on the breath combined with physical movement aimed at freeing energy at the base of the spine and allowing it to move upwards. It combines classic poses, chanting and meditation. White Lotus Yoga: modified Ashtanga Yoga combined with breath work and meditation.

Celeb Diet secrets It seems the only thing we love more than a celebrity, is a celebrity who loses weight. Here we reveal the secrets behind some of the world’s most famously followed bodies.
slim-magazine.com.au 55
Jennifer Lopez
Jennifer Lopez has one of those bodies we all envy: shapely and healthy looking. She’s no stick figure, with curves in all the right places. But even the gorgeous Ms Lopez admits she doesn’t always feel great about herself. “I’m only human, and sometimes I feel like working out, and sometimes I don’t. Sometimes I feel great about myself, and sometimes I think, ‘Oh God, I have work to do’. It’s just normal women’s stuff,” she told shapefit.com. “Basically, I’m just like anybody else, in that you have the body type you have, and you know what you have to do to get in top form, and you know how you are when you kind of slack off.” In her younger years Jennifer was a fanatical exerciser, but these days the mother of two has a more relaxed and realistic approach to diet and exercise. “I try to watch what I eat, but like anybody I indulge once in a while. If I’m trying to lose weight, I just cut carbohydrates from my diet. I don’t have anything banned from my diet. I eat almost everything, only in moderation. I believe in having a really well-balanced diet, and I think if you’re fit and healthy, your body will let you know what it needs. It’s just that a lot of people have forgotten how to listen to it.”
Kathy Ireland
If you are over 40, you will probably remember Kathy Ireland as one of the 80s and 90s supermodels. She graced the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine and strutted down catwalks in the skimpiest of swimwear. After she had her son, she gained almost 15 kilos, and she found herself gracing the covers of gossip magazines; the subject of cruel taunts about how she had let herself go. She told People Magazine that her son asked if she was pregnant. “I didn’t recognize the person I saw,” she said. “I saw someone who looked overwhelmed, overstressed, overweight, over everything.” Kathy eventually lost the weight by changing to what she describes as a more healthy lifestyle, and, mindful of the challenges that overweight mothers face, penned the book Real Solutions for Busy Moms, where she shares her secret to losing those extra kilos and how she maintains her new healthy lifestyle. In the book, Kathy talks about taking a good look at your choices and making small adjustments. She doesn’t believe in deprivation; she says the book is about choosing smaller portions and making sure you set aside some time to exercise – no matter how busy you are.
Kirstie Alley
“I’ve lost a million pounds!” Kirstie Alley told US Weekly magazine. That might be an exaggeration, but the 60-year-old actress has shed over 50 kilos since appearing on the US TV series Dancing with the Stars. Although her weight loss might be impressive, it’s been a long road for Kirstie, with a lot of weight loss and weight gain along the way. She famously lost almost 30 kilos in 2008 with the Jenny Craig program, for which she was a spokesperson, but then struggled to maintain the weight loss, and eventually gained it back – and more – in the coming years. She credits her current weight loss to an organic diet, nutritional supplements, and the strenuous training required for Dancing with the Stars. Kirstie has always been a hugely popular celebrity, known for her self-deprecating sense of humour and honest approach to discussing her weight. It seems everyone is cheering for her, and hoping she will be able to maintain the weight loss. “I feel like I’m back in my element,” she told Entertainment Tonight. “I honestly didn’t realise what I looked like.” 56 slim magazine SUMMER 2012
Tyra Banks
“Kiss my fat ass!” the talk show queen and host of America’s Top Model once famously shouted to the world, after images of her having gained about 15 kilos hit the papers along with some nasty headlines and much online chat about how “fat” she had become, including being given the title of America’s Top Waddle. Her defiant fighting spirit won her a legion of fans, and at the time Tyra claimed she was happy in her own skin and wouldn’t be losing weight to please anyone else. “When I told the world to kiss my fat ass, I remained that size for two years. I maintained it with my ice cream and my salad with ranch dressing and croutons and bacon bits,” she told People Magazine. But there were days, she said, when she didn’t feel as good about herself as she could. “I still feel hot, but every day is different. It’s when I put on the jeans that used to fit a year ago and don’t fit now and give me the muffin top, that’s when I say, ‘Damn!’.” When Tyra decided she wanted to lose a little weight to make herself feel better, she was conscious of the message she might send to other girls and women, who identified with her curvy shape. “I get so much mail from young girls who say, ‘I look up to you, you’re not as skinny as everyone else, I think you’re beautiful’,” she told People Magazine. “So when (magazines) say that my body is ‘ugly’ and ‘disgusting’, how does that make those girls feel?” Tyra has gone on to lose close to 18 kilos, by following a low carbohydrate diet and strict exercise program, but says she has no intention of becoming a stick figure thin waif. “This is a lifestyle change. It’s not about being skinny. It’s about getting in the best shape that you can be,” she said.
Seth Rogen
He used to be everyone’s favourite chubby funny guy, but in recent years actor Seth Rogen has lost an enormous amount of weight. The transition started when he started training to get in shape for the movie The Green Hornet. He employed the services of personal trainer Harley Pasternak, who is credited with reshaping the bodies of other Hollywood A-listers such as Jennifer Hudson, Robert Downey Jr, Megan Fox and Halle Berry. Harley Pasternak is the developer of the 5-Factor Diet and 5-Factor Fitness systems, a five week diet and exercise plan that many celebrities follow. The system sets five meals per day with five ingredients per meal, and 25 minute workouts everyday. Although the plan seems a little complicated, Seth said in one interview that his weight loss was mostly down to the most simple of lifestyle formulas: eating a healthy diet and being active. It ain’t rocket science!
Jennifer Hudson
Jennifer Hudson says she didn’t realise she was considered ‘plus size’ until she went to Hollywood. Surrounded by very thin women, Hudson celebrated her curves. It wasn’t until she was pregnant with her now two-year-old son that she felt she wanted to lose weight. “I thought, hold on – why doesn’t anybody know I’m pregnant?” she told Self Magazine. “And I wanted to set a good example for my son.” Hudson chose to join Weight Watchers and by following the program’s regimen of portion control and exercise, she eventually lost almost 40 kilos, going from a US size 16 to a size 6. Husdon has since gone on to become a spokesperson for Weight Watchers, inspiring others to lose excess weight. Hudson has said in the past that no matter what program you are on, what chefs and trainers you have access to, it all comes down to one thing: motivation. “It’s all about motivation, because at the end of the day, you can have all the trainers and all the money in the world, but if you don’t have that mindset, it’s not possible.” She says the weight loss has given her a new lease on life, with more energy, enthusiasm and confidence. “I’m prouder of my weight loss than my Oscar,” she said.

summer lovin’ These fresh and healthy dishes are perfect for long, hot days and balmy nights.
recipes Curried Sweet Potato with Sweetcorn & Avocado Salsa
Roasted Beetroot & Stilton Salad
Serves 4
Serves 4
650g sweet potatoes 2 tbsp curry paste Juice of 1 lemon 1 tbsp sunflower oil 2 tbsp chopped fresh mint 4 tbsp natural yogurt 200g can sweetcorn, drained 1 ripe avocado, stoned, peeled and diced 6 shallots, chopped
1 bunch, about 450g, fresh beetroot, scrubbed, stalks trimmed 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 1 tbsp sour cream 1 tsp creamed horseradish 1 tbsp white wine vinegar 100g watercress 100g Stilton cheese, crumbled
Light the barbecue or preheat the oven to 200ºC. Scrub the sweet potatoes and cut them into 1cm slices. Mix the curry paste, half the lemon juice, sunflower oil and mint together in a large bowl. Stir in the yogurt and season. Add the sweet potatoes to the curry paste mixture and mix well until coated. Arrange the sweet potato slices on the hot barbecue and cook for 20-25 minutes, turning regularly, until tender. Alternatively, arrange the slices in a single layer in a shallow roasting tin and cook in the oven for 45 minutes, turning once until golden and cooked through. To make the salsa, combine the sweetcorn, avocado and shallots, and serve with the potatoes.
Preheat the oven to 220ºC. In a large pan, cover the beetroot in cold water and bring to the boil. Simmer for 10–15 minutes and drain. Toss in 1 tablespoon of the olive oil and season. Place the beetroot in a small roasting tin and cook in the oven for 15–20 minutes until browned. Meanwhile, make the dressing: whisk together the remaining olive oil, sour cream, horseradish, vinegar and seasoning. Reserve a spoonful of the dressing and toss the watercress and crumbled Stilton in the rest. Arrange on four serving plates. Remove the beetroot from the oven and cut each one into quarters. Barbecued Summer Fruits Drizzled with Caramel Serves 6 6 ripe peaches 6 ripe plums 250g strawberries Juice of 2 large oranges 2 tbsp soft brown sugar 2 tsp vanilla extract To serve 150g fat-free Greek yogurt 2 tbsp light caramel sauce (available at most supermarkets) 50g chopped pistachios Cut the peaches and plums in half, remove the stone and cut each piece into quarters. Hull and quarter the strawberries. Tear off six squares of aluminium foil, large enough to hold the fruit when folded to double thickness. Divide the fruit equally between the folded foil squares and partially bring up the sides to hold in the juices. In a small jug, blend together the orange juice, brown sugar and vanilla extract. Divide the juice between each parcel and loosely seal each one. Cook on the barbecue for 10-12 minutes (this will depend on how hot your barbecue is), but check halfway through the cooking time. The fruit is ready when it softens slightly to the tip of a sharp knife, but without being ‘squishy’. Open each parcel, transfer to 6 serving bowls and top with a spoonful of yogurt, a drizzle of the caramel sauce and a few chopped pistachios. See www.waitrose.com for more fantastic recipes.

Harvey Normans Cooking in style demonstration programme demonstrates the features and benefits of Mieles Induction cooktops and pyrolytic ovens, in a relaxed atmosphere, where our dedicated chefs show how simple the product is to use while giving you great cooking tips. Book in today for your demonstration to see how fantastic the Miele ovens and cooktops perform, and how it can save you time and energy in the kitchen (Miele demonstrations now available at Harvey Norman Bundall, Fortitude Valley, Oxley, Browns Plains and Toowoomba, Garden City, Capalaba and Townsville).
Pyrolytic Ovens It is a job nobody enjoys – the cleaning of your oven interior is something most people put off until they absolutely have to, or pay somebody else to do it for them. The ultimate solution to this perennial problem is Pyrolytic Cleaning, it will bring your oven up like new every time, with only a little residual ash to sweep from the cavity floor.
How does it work?
Simplicity at your
fingertips
Very simply, when you select the pyrolytic function your oven temperature will be raised up to around 500°C for up to two hours, burning off all food and grease residue and carbonising everything to leave but just a small amount of ash to wipe out.
Is It safe? The pyrolytic control also securely locks the oven door to prevent any interruption or risk of danger, and only releases once everything is cool and safe. Even your oven door will not over heat so that it is so safe for those with children. Pyrolytic ovens are very well-insulated and efficient, so your oven cleaning cycle costs considerably less and there are no harsh chemicals or time spent scrubbing required. Leaving you more time to do what you want to do.
What is induction cooking? Induction is high speed, high power cooking... in fact 2.5 times quicker than using gas! Precision temperature capability. You can melt chocolate on low heat without needing a double boiler and you can stir fry, sear and brown with ease. Induction hot plates work on a electronic magnetic induction field, so the actual cooktop surface does not heat up, it’s the pan on top of the cooktop which becomes hot and directly heats your food; and when the pan is removed the heat generation stops. This means you cook more efficiently, without heating up the surrounding area and the kitchen. The boilovers do not hit a hot surface, so they do not burn and stick to the glass surface – spills simply wipe away. Book now to attend our free ‘cooking in style’ demonstrations on the appliances you are considering purchasing. Only at participating Harvey Norman stores.

ost of the time, lawyers don’t appreciate being referred to as ‘sharks’, but for six staff from McInnes Wilson Lawyers, the term has taken on a new meaning. They have just completed the Sharks Fitness Centre 12 week fitness challenge, an employer-funded initiative where the staff trained twice a week with personal trainer, Stacey Williams. The sessions, which each lasted an hour, took place during company time, and utilises the centre’s state-of-the-art training facilities. The 12 week challenge saw the women attain fitness goals that they previously never thought possible thanks, they say, to Stacey’s motivation skills, working toward a common goal as a group, and the high-standard of equipment at the centre. “I can see a huge difference in my fitness level in just 12 weeks,” says Tina. “My fitness levels have definitely increased. I also feel a lot more toned, and I’m definitely seeing more definition,” Bree agrees. “I think my biggest achievement is being able to row over one kilometre quite successfully,” Bree continues. The entire group said the program has given them higher energy levels; better fitness levels, and more confidence. “I have more confidence in my ability as Stacey would encourage us and push us further than I have ever been before,” Bree said. “And the friendly staff and the atmosphere of the gym makes you keep wanting to come back.” Located within the Southport Sharks Club precinct, Sharks Fitness is fast becoming the Gold Coast’s favourite gym, and it’s easy to see why. Slick, modern, stylish and impeccably clean, the gym is spacious and user-friendly, with 160 pieces of state of the art life fitness equipment and hundreds of group fitness classes each week. Active lunch With Craig Walton
Ever wondered why you are feeling so tired? The answer could be… exercise! Exercise isn’t something that only elite athletes do; something that only caters for the buffed weekend warrior. Exercise is something we were born to do. The body is designed to move and groove. As far back as the Stone Age, people have been making exercise part of their daily routine, chasing the next meal with a spear, walking, running, and swimming. The fact is; unless you get out and do something physical on a regular basis, you are doing yourself an injustice. Throughout my career as a professional athlete I have gone through stages where I wonder why I feel so bad when I stop training. It is usually due to an injury or an end of the year break. You would think sleeping in and doing nothing all day would recharge the batteries, but think again, it has the opposite effect. I spent day after day feeling sluggish and unmotivated. My diet would go out the window. To put it bluntly, it made me feel like crap. The funny thing was, if I stuck to a normal routine, forced myself to get up early and go for a surf or a walk along the beach, my day would start off on a whole new level. I would feel refreshed, energised and my level of motivation would be far greater than if I had slept in and done nothing. In recent studies it has shown that daily exercise of between 45-60 minutes is not only beneficial to your health but improves mood, brain function and, best of all, your sex life. Research has also shown that mental illness, such as depression and anxiety, is decreased marginally due to regular physical activity. Exercise releases certain feel-good chemicals called endorphins and neurotransmitters in the brain, which leave us with a sense of highalertness during and after physical activity.

I know what you are going to say. ‘I don’t have time! I have to work, I have to get the kids ready for school, take them to school, take them to sport, do the shopping. And I need to sleep. I just don’t have time’. I totally understand all these challenges, but where there is a will, there is a way. It is all about time management. Local councils and companies have started running lunch time recreation activities such as fun runs and lunch time swim programs. While some people love to run, it can be a problem in warmer climates due to lunch time being the hottest part of the day. Swimming is probably one of your best options as it is conducted in a temperature controlled environment, is social, and best of all, is low impact. As well as the above benefits it gets you out of the office for an hour or so, allows you to de-stress, rid your mind of work related frustrations and come back with a clearer and more active brain function. Or you could simply stick on a pair of trainers and go for a walk in your lunch hour. Whatever you choose to do, do yourself a favour; get out of the office, get active and return with a whole new outlook for the work afternoon. Craig Walton is a Sydney Olympic Triathlete representative and six time Noosa Triathlon Champion who now spends his time coaching and mentoring some of the best triathletes in the world. He is an Olympic Games Gold Medal Coach, a four time World Championship gold medal Coach and 2009 Australian Institute of Sport Coach of the year.

a cure for cellulite? Has science finally found
It may not be a serious health concern, but for many of us, cellulite is no laughing matter. No amount of diet or exercise can cure us of cellulite, but Parlour P Skin Rejuvenation Clinic is using the revolutionary Acoustic Wave Therapy to achieve genuine results; getting rid of cellulite, once and for all.
64 slim magazine SUMMER 2012
S
imply put, cellulite is a hardening of the connective tissue which traps cells of fat, causing dimpling in the skin, giving it an appearance similar to that of orange peel. Statistics show that up to 90 per cent of post adolescent women develop cellulite (and to make matters worse, it is rarely seen in men!). Over the years there have been many creams, lotions and treatments designed to treat cellulite. All make promises, but few, if any, have delivered. The problem, simply put, is that cellulite is caused deep in the skin tissue – not on the surface of the skin. Creams are not capable of penetrating deep enough to effectively treat cellulite. Even diet and exercise isn’t enough to budge cellulite, because cellulite occurs in the layer of superficial fat. That is why women’s magazines gleefully publish pictures of models and celebrities who suffer from cellulite. Thin, fit, healthy women get cellulite too. The key is to remember that weight loss and cellulite need to be treated separately. But before you resign yourself to a life of lumpy skin, there is some very good news for the sufferers of cellulite. With Acoustic Wave Therapy™ (AWT) women can achieve a long term solution for smoother skin in the areas where skin dimpling commonly forms – the thighs, buttocks, abdomen and arms. No gimmicks, no empty promises. AWT is a scientific solution that has seen genuine results. Like many great inventions AWT was discovered by accident. The treatment is adapted from European technology originally designed to ease the pain associated with poor circulation and stiff joints and torn or damaged muscles. It was during a treatment process for female athletes in the German Olympic Team that improvements in cellulite appearance were discovered by accident. AWT is a product of Storz Medical Ag, who have been the world market leaders in the supply of and development of technology in the shock wave field since 1987. Their equipment for the treatment and disintegration of kidney
Celebrity Fan: According to the New York Daily Times, Madonna has spent over 50,000 pounds on her own AWT machine. stones can be found in many major hospitals throughout the world. After much clinical research this ground-breaking technology has been adapted to treat the complex problem of cellulite. AWT destroys the hardened connective tissue, allowing the body’s natural healing process to take over and, fresh new elastic tissue to grow. The surrounding fat cells responsible for the dimpled effect of cellulite are sufficiently disrupted to cause increased permeability and leakage, which is then carried away via the lymphatic system. Simultaneously, vibration is induced in the connective tissue by delivering acoustic pulses to the treatment area which ultimately leads to increased vascularisation and the creation of a new, thickened band of collagen in the upper and mid portions of the skin, which also restricts the bulging of fat cells on the skins surface. The result of this treatment is restored elasticity in connective tissue, and noticeably smoother skin. Noticeable improvement typically occurs between the third and fourth treatment. Patients are offered this quick and affordable treatment typically twice per week for four to six weeks depending on the individual. So if cellulite is a problem for you, take some time to learn more about AWT. Katrina Peacock and her team at Parlour P Skin Rejuvenation Clinic are experts in delivering AWT, and can discuss your individual concerns and goals. Call 07 5538 1844 or go to www.parlourp.com.au

push it! Fitness experts say the push-up is the closest thing there is to a perfect exercise. And with good reason.
F
or people carrying extra body weight, and for most females who feel they don’t have the upper body strength to do them correctly, push ups tend to be an extremely unpleasant part of training, especially when all you can do are ‘wuss ups’, or modified push ups on the knees. However, Jaylin Allen, a certified personal trainer, says once you know the basics, there will be no stopping you. “Once you are able to knock out a set of push ups with some ease, you will appreciate this incredible fitness tool,” she says. “And though you may never be madly in love with push ups, you’ll at least be able to stomach them.” But before we look at how, let’s look at why. Just what are the benefits of push ups? “Right next to pull-ups, a push-up is the greatest upper body exercise of all time,” Jaylin says. “In fact, I believe push ups to be one of the best total body exercises around. Push ups work primarily your chest, triceps, and front shoulders. However they also place a great demand on your core strength and stability. In addition, push-ups engage your scapular muscles (shoulder blades) in a way that most pushing exercises do not, thus providing some much needed mid and upper back work that most trainees are missing out on. Furthermore, maintaining the proper push-up position requires that you tense and engage every muscle on the front side of your body from your feet to your front shoulders. And if you squeeze your glutes (which you should as this helps protect your lower back), you even get your booty involved.” Finally, push-ups are the ultimate anywhere, anytime exercise that requires nothing but your body weight and space the size of your frame to perform.
66 slim magazine SUMMER 2012
THE BASICS Here are Jaylin’s technique and coaching tips on how to perform a perfect push-up: Tuck your elbows to your sides and pull your shoulders blades down and back. It’s critical to keep your elbows close to your rib cage while performing push-ups. Suck in your stomach and brace your abs. By pulling your navel to your spine and bracing your abs as if you we about to be kicked in the stomach, you will best activate those key core muscles while performing push ups. Tense your thighs and squeeze your glutes. The straighter your legs during the push up the more stable you will be. This is accomplished by tensing your thighs throughout the exercise. Furthermore, tense your buttock cheeks, as this helps relax overactive hip flexors; alleviating unnecessary strain on the lower back. Focus on inhaling during the lowering portion of the push-up and then forcefully exhaling during the lifting portion of the push-up. By filling your belly with air during the lowering portion you make it easier to stabilise your spine, so your core remains locked, allowing for a smooth and seamless transition from the down position to the up position. Be flat as a diving board. Throughout the entire movement, the key is to maintain a straight line from the heels through the shoulders. You must not let your hips sag as this will put undue strain on your lower back. Furthermore, you must avoid raising your hips as this not only takes away much needed core work, but also results in a rounding of the upper back that potentially results in unwanted shoulder issues. Spread your fingers. Many people complain of wrist pain while they do push ups. One way to take pressure off of your wrists is to spread your fingers as far apart as possible. This expands the surface area and dissipates some of the excess strain on the wrists. Or try doing fist push-ups or push-ups with your hands on a dumbbell.
It’s cheap, easy, doesn’t require any equipment, can work multiple parts of the body at the same time, and almost everyone, from beginners to athletes, can benefit from it
How to do a perfect push up
Get on the floor and position your hands slightly wider than your shoulders. Raise up onto your toes so you are balanced on your hands and toes. Keep your body in a straight line from head to toe without sagging in the middle or arching your back.
first timers If you haven’t done any kind of push-up, let alone a perfect one, don’t worry. There are several ways to ease into doing push-ups. One option is to use a low bench to prop up your arms, and then do either a regular push-up or the knees-on-the-floor version. If you put your feet on the floor and put your hands on the bench, you can work on getting the body form right with much less strain. If even a kneeling push-up with a bench is too tough for you, there’s an even easier way to begin. You don’t have to lie down at all. Instead, do your push-ups standing against the wall, which dramatically reduces the pressure on arms and upper back. To make it simpler still, stand closer to the wall. With your feet very close to the wall, there is almost no strain, but it still allows you to keep your body in alignment so you get a real sense of how it should feel. As you gain strength, keep moving your feet further away until you feel confident enough to try push-ups on the floor.
Your feet can be close together or a bit wider apart depending upon what is most comfortable for you. Before you begin any movement, contract your abs and tighten your core by pulling your belly button toward your spine. Keep a tight core throughout the entire push up. Inhale as you slowly bend your elbows and lower yourself until your elbows are at a 90 degree angle. Exhale as you begin pushing back up to the start position. Don’t lock out the elbows; keep them slightly bent. Repeat for as many repetitions as your workout routine requires.

tips
to help overweight children
get healthy
C
hildhood obesity has more than tripled over the past 40 years. More than 30% of Australian children and teens are overweight and, even more disturbing, 20% are classified as obese. Many parents wait for their child to grow out of it, encouraging them to be proud of who they are. That is certainly noble in theory, but Bill Winch, Personal Wellness Coach and weight loss specialist says being overweight increases the child’s risk for type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, elevated blood cholesterol levels, and premature heart disease. It can also lead to a variety of social problems, reduce your child’s likelihood of participating in sport, and set them up for a lifetime of unhealthy habits. “It can be a challenge for parents to provide children with opportunities to lead a healthy lifestyle,” Winch says. “It’s hard to keep an eye on them at all times, and we want to instill healthy eating habits. That is why it is so important to teach proper nutrition in the home. They will not learn about it in school, not even in health class. The more you practise good health at home, the better choices they will make out in the world.” Here are a few of Bill’s weight loss tips to help get your children started on the road to good health.
68 slim magazine SUMMER 2012
#1 Be The Example Yourself
If you are overweight or obese yourself, you are setting a bad example for your children. Be a responsible parent and go on a diet. Children often mimic what their parents do, and if you are overweight, they will think it is OK to be overweight.
#2 Pack Their Lunch For Them
Do not hand over a money for your child to purchase a lunch from the tuckshop just because you are running late in the morning. Nine times out of ten they will spend it on junk food because you are not there to tell them no. If you want your children to eat properly, do the most you can. Pack their lunch so they are forced to eat it. If that is all they have, they will eat it.
#3 Think About The Future
Kids want to grow up fast, but they do not think of the consequences of getting there, without planning. Studies show that if a child remains obese by the age of 10-14, they have nearly an 80% chance of remaining at a dangerously heavy weight through adulthood. Let them know that, especially if it scares you (which it should!). A child’s weight is the most important predictor of whether or not the child will become an obese adult. Nearly 65% of obese adolescents will still be obese as adults, even if neither parent is obese.
Remember, as a parent, you are responsible for what, when and where your children eat. It is up to you to help your children adopt a healthy lifestyle. #4 Eat Together
It is important to monitor your child’s eating habits and make sure they are paying attention to the luxury of having dinner, especially if they are trying to lose weight. Eating together as a family is an activity that will help everyone follow a healthier lifestyle.
#5 A Healthy Breakfast
You know this is the most important meal of the day, so starting the day with a sugary cereal is extremely counter-productive. A healthy breakfast at home does not have to be time consuming, especially in summer; smoothies, fruit platters, wholegrain cereals are all quick and easy – and great tasting ways to start the day.
The Good Stuff
Fruits: Your kids need to eat fruits on a regular basis so that they can obtain some much needed nutrients, including beta carotene, fibre, carbohydrates, vitamin C and folate. Some great snacking options include fruit kebabs, bananas, watermelon, apple rings topped with a bit of peanut butter, oranges cut into quarters. Vegetables: Veggies provide kids with beta carotene, fibre, vitamin C, folate and water for hydration. Some great snacking options include grape tomatoes, celery stuffed with cheese, cucumber, carrot sticks or green beans served with a low-fat yoghurt dip. Grains: Eating grains provides kids with iron, fibre, carbohydrates and some essential B-vitamins. Foods that fall into this category include wheat crackers, cereals, rice cakes, and popcorn. Protein: Kids need protein for energy. Excellent food choices in this category include whole grain crackers with ham, tuna, pasta, and hard-boiled eggs. Dairy: This is an important food group for children because it provides them with the calcium that their growing bodies need. Smart snacking choices include milkshakes made with low-fat milk, fruit, cheese (slices or strings) and yoghurt (just make sure it is not full of artificial colours and flavourings).
Portion Control
Por t i on cont rol m u st be u sed wh en preparing snacks in much the same way that it should be used during meal times. Just because you are feeding your kids healthy, nutritious snacks doesn’t mean that they can’t consume too much food. This is especially true when they are eating things like peanut butter, cheese and yoghurt dips. While very healthy and packed with essential nutrients, these foods still carry fat and calories, so they need to be consumed in moderation.
#6 Introduce Healthy Snacking
Children are quite active with school, sports and other extracurricular activities. It makes sense that they need a boost of energy in between meals. Stock your pantry with healthy snacks instead of processed foods. Make sure they have access to plenty of fruit and vegetables, and don’t ever let them drink ‘fizzy’ drinks.
It is usually a good idea to try to have snacks already prepared and on hand when you know your kids are going to want them. This means having after-school snacks that are ready for them to eat is an absolute must. For more go to www.loseW8now.com

organic
We all know a healthy diet includes plenty of lean protein, fruits and vegetables, and we often hear that organic is best. But is organic really a better choice?
O
nly a few short years ago, you never heard anybody ask ‘Is it organic?’, no one seemed to have a problem with gluten, and the only people who went to Farmer’s Markets were, well, farmers. But the times they have a changed. These days you can’t swing a free-range chicken without hitting an organic food store, a macrobiotic restaurant, or non-genetically engineered fruit bar. But what does it all mean? And is organic, natural, chemical-free food really better for us? If a food is certified organic, or natural, it means that no nasties have been used to produce it. The organic farmers don’t use chemical fertilizers or pesticides, opting instead for soil rotation and natural pest control systems. There’s no genetically-modified or engineered substances, and, in the case of organic meat and poultry, no growth hormones. The health benefits of eating toxin- and chemical-free food is a bit of a no brainer, and studies have shown that fresh organic produce contains more vitamins, minerals, enzymes and micro-nutrients than conventionally farmed produce. Organic farming practices are also good for the environment because there are no chemicals, herbicides and pesticides entering the soil and water, and it has a lower carbon footprint than conventional farming. Is it any wonder then that the demand for organic produce in Australia is growing at a rate of 20-30 percent per year? But it isn’t all good news. Just about the only thing organic food isn’t good for is your wallet. A lot of organic produce is more expensive than its conventional counterparts, but organic devotees say it’s worth the extra expense.
Ten reasons to buy organic food
k
Alasdair Smithson, organic farmer and director of Munch Crunch Organics gives us his top ten reasons to buy certified organic food. 1 It’s healthier – for you and your kids Scientific studies show that on average, organic food gives you higher levels of vitamin C and essential minerals such as calcium, magnesium, iron and chromium as well as cancer-fighting antioxidants.
k
2 Avoid pesticides Chemical pesticides have been repeatedly linked to various cancers, and dietary exposures are an unnecessary burden on your body. Chemical pesticides are banned in organic farming.
e
3 Artificial fertilizer free Organic farming bans the use of artificial fertilizers, which pollute our waters. 4 High standards All organic farms are inspected by an independent auditor at least once a year. The standards for organic food are laid down in Australian law.

s
a
s
5 Food miles Buying locally means we save on huge transport and energy costs and recycle money within our local communities. 6 Protects the countryside Organic farmers work with nature. Trees, hedges, and wide unused paddock edges are important on organic farms. These provide ecosystems for wildlife. 7 Climate Change Farming is a major source of emissions, which are responsible for climate change. A UK Government study found organic farms use 30 – 40% less energy than non-organic farms. 8 Fair employment A report carried out by the University of Essex, UK, found that organic farms provide almost 50% more jobs per farm than non-organic farms. 9 Avoid GM Organic food and farming prohibits the growing of any GM (Genetically Modified) crops and the use of any GM products. 1 Top for taste Organic fruit and vegetables tend to grow more slowly and have a 0 lower water content, which contributes to the fuller flavour some people experience.

7th heaven It seems too good to be true; a seven seater that looks as good as it drives, with superior safety features. But as Kate Bennett discovered, it’s not a dream, it’s a Kluger.
I
t’s a dilemma anyone with a family faces when choosing a car; I need something with room enough for my family and all their stuff, but I don’t want to drive around in a daggy looking mini-van or station wagon. For me, when it comes to cars I want style, but I also want substance. And most of all I want safety. So I decided to test drive the Kluger for this issue, from Grand Motors Toyota Southport. Kluger is stylish, practical, and most importantly, safe. It’s a seven seater yes, seven but it has the flexibility of many different seating and load configurations, so you can fit seven people, or five people and three surfboards, or four people and four bikes... you get the idea. Like all Toyotas, the Kluger is all about safety. It has a host of safety inclusions including seven airbags, a conversation mirror (so you can keep an eye on the kids without turning away from the road; I found this invaluable), and best of all it features a reversing camera to provide rear visibility to the driver. If you are anything like me you have watched with horror as yet another story emerges of a child being reversed over in their own driveway, by their own loving parents. Those stories give me chills, and the outstanding reversing mirror is part of the reason I love the Kluger. The camera helps provide a wide field of view immediately behind you, enhancing your rear vision. It helps you see things like small children, animals, low walls, bicycles or shopping trolleys which might be close to the back of the car and difficult or impossible to see. Whenever you shift the car into reverse, the screen lights up with a real-time image of what’s behind you. Apart from its obvious safety benefits, I found it was really helpful in squeezing into tight spaces, and on street parking, which can be daunting with cars zooming past. Inside, the car has the look and feel of a true luxury vehicle, with captain seats in the second row (depending on how you are configuring), DVD players, multi-zone climate control and all the mod cons you can imagine. The beauty of the Kluger is that it gives me everything I need. It looks great, it has loads of room and storage, it runs like a dream, and best of all, it has been designed with safety in mind. ‘I really don’t know how we would have gotten through this without income protection”
laire is 41 years old. She has three children and a partner, and she works full time at a childcare centre. Six months ago, while showering, Claire found a lump under her arm. Subsequent trips to the doctor revealed the lump to be breast cancer, and for the past six months she has undergone chemotherapy and two operations. It’s been a rough time for Claire and her family: the chemo has made her very ill, she has lost all her hair, her children have been frightened and worried about the future, and Claire has had to face all sorts of thoughts and feelings she has never experienced before. What she hasn’t had to worry about is money. Claire has had income protection insurance and trauma cover for the past eight years. “When I took it out, I never thought I would use it,” Claire said of the policy. “I guess it’s that old cliche, you really don’t think something like this will ever happen to you. But it did, and it has been awful, just awful, but the insurance has been a lifesaver. I really don’t know how we would have gotten through this without it. I have three kids and their expenses don’t just stop because I’m sick. Nor does the mortgage, the bills, the petrol, the groceries.” “Looking back, I am so glad I made the decision to take out the policies, because I was in two minds about it. But I can honestly say it is one of the best decisions I have ever made. Without that protection, an already terrible situation would have been made even worse.” Studies have shown us, time and time again, the negative effect stress can have on a person’s recovery, so it’s important if you have been in an accident, or are diagnosed with an illness, that you are able to simply focus on getting well. Drake Insurance have been leaders in the insurance field for over 32 years. Their reputation is second to none, and they offer a range of affordable solutions, tailored to suit your needs, including: life insurance cover; total and permanent disability cover; trauma cover; income protection; and business expenses cover. top 10 tips for weight management
Celebrity trainers are often more fad, less fact, but Jackie Warner has some pretty solid weight loss credentials. Star of TV shows such as Work Out and Thintervention, author of numerous weight loss books, and creator of her highly successful range of work out DVDs, Jackie has worked with clients ranging from overweight to morbidly obese. Her no nonsense attitude and tough-love approach has seen her help her clients achieve lasting weight loss success. Here, Jackie shares with SLIM readers her top ten tips for weight loss.
#1 Deprivation does not work
When starting a diet, for the first two weeks add healthy, nutrient filled foods (low sugar fruit/veggies/lean protein and a multivitamin). Your body will begin to naturally reject sugars and processed foods.
#2 Never skip meals
All of my morbidly obese clients have one thing in common – skipping meals. The moment you allow your blood sugar to drop (when you feel hunger pangs) you become a fat-storing machine. You must eat small meals or snacks every few hours.
#3 Add the right foods to your diet
Include two eggs a day in your meals as they are not only a nutrientdense food with 11 essential vitamins and minerals but also contain lecithin, which is fat burning and curbs the appetite.
#4 Eat two to three cups of veggies a day
They are natural fat burners and are loaded with fibre. Sneak your veggies into regular meals. For example, put spinach into a fruit shake to hide the taste.
#5 Drink plenty and often
Drink two to three litres of water a day with lemon, and drink a bottle of water with morning coffee.
#6 Crunches are a waste of time
If you carry weight in your midsection, you will just build muscle under fat – thus making you appear bigger! The only way to get a true six-pack is to combine a healthy diet with resistance training.
#7 Don’t just set weight loss goals, set athletic goals
People respond so much better if they have goals to work towards. If you are normally sedentary, make it a goal to walk around the block 10 times every other night. If you already work out, set yourself a challenge. For example, train for a triathlon or exercise for a cause.
#8 Be a smart consumer and read labels carefully
Fat-free products are loaded with sugar. Fat does not make you fat – sugar does! When grocery shopping, meals should have no more than 400 calories and snacks 150 calories – buy nothing with over nine grams of sugar.
#9 Change your workout routine once a month
After a few months, the body adapts no matter how intense the exercise. You want to avoid getting into a plateau.
#10 Eat the Good, the Bad, then the Ugly
Classify the food on your plate as follows: Good = veggies/fruit/lean protein; Bad = starches/bread; Ugly = dessert/alcohol. Be sure to fill up on the good first. For more information on Jackie go to www.jackiewarner.com
