ike many of you, I’ve struggled with my weight. After the births of my children I gained a lot of weight and had to work hard to find a way to get back to a healthy lifestyle and back in shape. After a lot of hard work, I am proud that I have achieved my goals, and I want to help others do the same. I know it can be a lonely experience, not being the shape or size you want to be. Sometimes it’s difficult to know where to start to get your health back on track. We all need help and guidance. In the pages of Slim Magazine, we bring you legitimate information about the choices you have in achieving your weight loss goals. We bring you expert advice from industry leaders like dietitian Taryn Swift and psychologist Warren Artz from WeightLoss Solutions Australia; and information on the latest treatments and programs available. We aim to inspire, entertain and inform, and to help guide you through the myriad options you have available to you. This issue we talk to one of Australia’s most loved entertainers, Kate Ceberano, about her life in the spotlight and her famous curves. We also bring you another iconic Australian woman, Olivia Newton John. Her cookbook Livwise is full of delicious, healthy recipes and we share a selection of them with you. We look at issues such as emotional eating, diet saboteurs, addressing weight with children, and look at whether your weight has an effect on your sex life. We also have some fantastic offers, giveaways and competitions. I know you will enjoy the issue and my hope is that this will be your first step to achieving your goals. I’d love to hear from you about your personal stories and feedback on the magazine, so please drop me a line to kate@slim-magazine.com.au

Oh yes you can Overweight children believe they have poorer movement skills, such as throwing, catching, running, jumping, and hopping, compared to their leaner counterparts, a new study has shown. And their parents agree. The study which was published in The Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport (JSAMS), examined whether children’s actual and perceived physical ability and their parent’s perceptions differed by weight status. Over 1,400 children aged 9-11 years and their parents living in NSW participated in the study. Results showed parents of overweight children perceived them to be less able than non-overweight children. Overweight children had the same perception. Such beliefs influence motivation to participate in physical activity. It is therefore important for parents of overweight children to tell their children that they are quite able to participate in physical activity, to help in increasing their levels of activity. The study highlights that physical activity levels are significantly lower among overweight children and children’s motivation to participate in physical activity is influenced by their perceived and actual competence. So no matter what size your child is, encourage them to get out and get active.

white is the new Green Despite common belief and recent hype, white tea is now thought to be superior to green tea. Studies by microbiologist Dr. Milton Schiffenbauer (PhD), in the United States have indicated that white tea kills viruses and bacteria while green tea only stimulates the immune system to fight disease. Not only does white tea contain stronger health benefits, it’s lower in caffeine, is a natural and rich source of antioxidants, acts as an excellent digestive aid and is great for detoxing. What’s more, white tea is a more effective antioxidant as compared to other health drinks such as pomegranate juice and acai berry at destroying harmful bacteria and it doesn’t share the same rich sugar content which have additional health related issues. White tea is made specifically from young tea plants (Cameillia Sinensis) and has the least amount of processing out of all the teas which ensures its unprecedented nutrient and antioxidant profile. Green tea is composed mainly of the leaves which are steamed or pan-fried before being rolled and black tea undergoes even further fermentation and processing which in turn impacts on its health benefit credentials. The Chinese have been enjoying the benefits of white tea for more than 1,000 years and now Aussies can too with Lotus Peak White Tea. Grown in mountainous regions of China in accordance with ancient Chinese traditions and expertise without chemicals and pesticides, this tea is good for you inside and out. Lotus Peak White Tea is available in Woolworths, Coles, Safeway and other selected health food stores. For more information go to www.lotuspeak.com.au

A new study suggests that boosting calcium intake from milk and increasing vitamin D levels could aid weight loss. The study, published recently in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, suggested that dairy calcium may accelerate weight loss by decreasing the amount of fat you absorb. So grab a glass of milk and boost your chances at weight loss.
Weight loss surgery on the rise over last decade. The number of hospitalisations for weight loss surgery has increased dramatically over the past decade, rising from about 500 in 1998 to 17,000 in 2007-08, according to a report from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW). The report, Weight loss surgery in Australia, shows that between 1998-99 and 2007-08 the number of hospital admissions for weight loss surgery increased by an average of 54% per year, while the total number of all hospital admissions increased on average by less than 4% per year over the same period. The most common weight loss procedure was laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding accounting for over 72% of admissions in 2007-08.

Holly Brisley is back in her skinny jeans
Almost every woman will struggle with their weight at one point in their life, whether it’s losing those post-pregnancy kilos, a long term obesity issue, or just needing to drop those stubborn extra centimetres before a big event. For Australian actress and TV presenter Holly Brisley, pictured, it was a struggle to lose the last seven kilos after giving birth to son Levi. Holly says she managed to lose the post baby weight with the help of Super Slim. “I’ve done every crazy diet you can think of. I last about three days and I’m like ‘Oh this is silly’,” Holly says. “And my thing now is, I just eat whatever I want. If I want to have spaghetti bolognese at night time, I’m going to have it. Super Slim is the perfect thing for a new mum to lose those extra kilos.” Super Slim is a meal replacement, consisting of a unique blend of over twenty ingredients including super foods such as the exotic African mango, chia seed, goji berries, spirulina, wheatgrass and more. The makers of Super Slim say it will naturally assist the metabolism, and help keep you fuller for longer, all with no caffeine. “I’ve always been quite healthy but I find now, particularly because I’ve got a baby, I just don’t have the time to take care of myself the way I would like to. What I love the most about Super Slim is it’s a superfood, so I’m getting all of the antioxidants and good things I need in the day to get me through.” Super Slim is available from stockists such as Woolworths, Priceline, Target, Terry White, and Amcal Pharmacys, and online at www.superslim.com.au

Restore, Rejuvenate, Respect
After weight loss or as a natural part of the ageing process, we lose volume in our face. This loss of volume can make us appear older than our years. We can also develop lines and wrinkles in both the upper and lower parts of our faces, making us appear angry or tired. Fortunately, there are treatments for these common conditions and the team at The Layt Clinic, have extensive experience and knowledge in the area. Working with Dr Craig Layt, an extensively trained and skilled plastic, cosmetic and reconstructive surgeon, the Layt Clinic’s team are highly skilled and professional. They take the time to listen to your goals, needs and concerns, and guide you through your treatments options. They focus on addressing the individual concerns of patients and achieving natural looking results. The treatments are designed for the individual person rather than a set package where the treatments may not suit the individuals conditions or concerns. The products used are TGA approved, not substituted for copy brands and are not watered down. Anti-aging injections Over time our skin reacts to ageing and climatic elements, such as the sun, smoking and dehydration. Years of muscle actions like frowning and squinting cause us to develop the frown lines, forehead lines and crows feet around the eyes that give us a tired or angry appearance. Skin also loses its resilience, developing lines in the lower face particularly around the mouth, on the cheeks, and between the nose and corners of the mouth. The team at the Layt Clinic offer simple non-surgical techniques to relax the muscles and smooth out facial lines and wrinkles. These techniques are so versatile they can even be used to achieve slight eyebrow lifts and enhancement of the lips. Volumising injections Injectable hyaluronic volumisers that recontour the face to restore volume to areas of the face that have become hollow or thin due to weight loss or agerelated facial fat loss. Immediately after the treatment, facial contours appear fuller and rounder giving the face a softer, more youthful appearance. These volumising treatments achieve dramatic yet natural looking results. Volumising treatments and anti-wrinkle treatments can help to increase self esteem and improve confidence. Call The Layt Clinic on 07 5597 4100 or go to www.drlayt.com.au

HOLISTIC CLEANSE It’s a subject many people don’t understand, and don’t want to talk about, but Colon Hydrotherapy is a treatment that almost anyone can benefit from. And the procedure is surprisingly private and comfortable. Simone Jones at The Colonic Clinic in Burleigh Heads specialises in the procedure and says there are common misconceptions about the procedure itself and the results that can be achieved. “Most people when you mention colon hydrotherapy instantly think of an embarrassing and uncomfortable procedure, and that isn’t the case at all. At The Colonic Clinic, the procedure is done with a pencil thin tube, which you insert in complete privacy.” There is no embarrassment or discomfort. The device used at The Colonic Clinic uses gravity fed warm filtered water, which is infused into the colon for up to 45 minutes, giving a thorough cleanse. The procedure helps stimulate the colon’s natural peristalsis, which aids in the removal of waste and toxins that have accumulated in the large intestine (patients can lose up to five kilos of accumulated waste after a colon cleanse). The effect is often life changing. Colon hydrotherapy is used to aid weight loss, and treat a variety of problems such as fatigue, depression, constipation, headaches, migraines, irritable bowel, poor digestion, anxiety, diarrhea, sluggish bowel, skin problems and sinus. To learn more about the procedure call The Colonic Clinic on 07 5520 3887 or go to www.thecolonicclinic.com.au

health shelf YOU: Losing Weight by Michael F. Roizen and Mehmet Oz

But you can diet smart, not hard. In YOU: Losing Weight, the doctors behind bestselling YOU: On a Diet - Dr. Michael Roizen and Dr. Mehmet Oz (the doctor from Oprah) offer their best 99 tips and strategies for getting your body into the shape and with the waist size that you’ve always wanted. Dr. Roizen and Dr. Oz use their signature wit and wisdom to boil down the science and strategies for you. They keep their usual no-nonsense approach to explaining the human body to outline why crash dieting can’t work for the long term. More important, they share their favorite weight-loss super-foods recipes and provide exercise suggestions for how to get the most from any kind of workout (Simon & Schuster, July 2011).

the beauty of being
kate slim-magazine.com.au 21
W
ith a dedication to her craft and a determined nature, Kate Ceberano has maintained a career over more than twenty five years, in an industry renowned for ‘chewing ‘em up, and spitting ‘em out’. Kate first found fame with her funk band I’m Talking. The group’s album produced three top ten singles, went platinum and won Best New Talent at the 1984 Countdown Awards. In 1985 Kate won Best Female Vocalist at the Countdown Awards as well as Best Female Singer at the Australian Record Industry Association (ARIA) Awards. When after just one album, the group broke up, Kate went solo, and became one of Australia’s most successful and respected soul, jazz and pop female performers. Kate has long been admired for her exotic good looks, and her curvaceous figure. In an industry dominated by rail-thin women, Kate stands out for her willingness to embrace her natural beauty and not succumb to the dangerous skinny-trend that has seen many performers damage their health in an effort to achieve an ultra-slim look. Recently Kate became the brand ambassador for Berlei Curves; a fashionable and flattering underwear range for full-figured, full-busted women who want to look and feel fabulous. The campaign has seen Kate photographed by renowned fashion photographer Jez Smith, with stunning results. Slim spoke to Kate about the campaign, motherhood, and her brilliant career. You look absolutely gorgeous in the Berlei CURVES campaign. Was it daunting to get in front of the camera in your underwear? I would be lying to say it isn’t daunting. I think of every opportunity I have to be photographed as something to overcome. And the overcoming of it is very satisfying, especially when I get to work with such wonderful photographers and makeup artists. It takes a real team to create that level of security. You seem very comfortable in your own skin; has that always been the case? I feel comfortable in my skin, some days more than others. Depending on whose eyes I am viewing me through. Me on my own quiet downtime feels pretty happy that I’m strong and fit and can push this body around. In an industry where you are essentially the product, how hard is it to maintain a healthy self image? You have to be vigilant and you have to use self discipline to stop the urge to compare yourself to others. You have to be aware of the things about you that you do like and always keep them in the forefront of your mind. Particularly if your interests are wide and varied. For instance, there is no time to be bothered with self examination on stage in front of thousands of people. It’s just ‘get out there and entertain’. It has seemed that for the past decade or so, the entertainment industry has demanded that women in particular conform to a certain look – which is generally rail thin. But that seems to be changing, with more acceptance of an individual’s unique beauty. Would you agree that this change is taking 22 slim magazine WINTEr 2011
place, and if so what do you credit that to? In some areas, but in the areas that count for me, it’s always been the art that has been the defining factor. Does the artist produce emotional impacts on the masses? That is really what this whole thing comes down to. The part you’re describing has to do with… marketing and advertising. Whilst that should be a respected part of the business, it isn’t what gets you there or keeps you there in the long run. Great artists and ability endure... despite the packaging. Look at Leonard Cohen! Could you tell us a little about your mother and father, and the impact they have had on you, specifically your seemingly strong sense of self confidence? My mother is like one of the unacknowledged saints of this world. The things that she has assisted and supported both in mine and my father’s dreams are incalculable in value. My father is one of the greatest karate masters this country has ever seen. He came to Australia as a musician in a Marine Corps Drum and Bugle drill marching band and met her (my mother) at a dance in Adelaide. They married, went to live in Hawaii and then settled in Melbourne with us three kids. He created a huge school of traditional karate which exists and has grown massively all over Australia. He is a teacher who commands huge respect all over the world. My Mum supported him in that endeavour for 30 years, and now she supports me in any way I need, spiritually, emotionally and in my work and domestic needs. She’s strong and smart about the human condition and the propensity for artistic people to self combust. None of that for us. Your daughter Gypsy has just turned seven, tell us about her; is she a performer? Just recently she came on tour with me and got up on stage for fun to sing and dance to a song. She is very comfortable on stage, natural and joyful. She loves music and creating her own songs. Mostly though she shows a great ability to style herself and me with amazing taste so it could be that design and fashion will be her calling. Seven is an age where young girls start to think about how they look and what they are wearing. Do you have a plan to help keep her self confidence strong and healthy? I keep on encouraging her to maintain her own integrity and already well established intrinsic sense of fashion. Has motherhood changed your attitude toward body image, weight, and wellness? Motherhood has given me the understanding that the mythical ideal of a perfect body is indeed just that, mythical, and I am inspired to make the most of what I have and who I am. My values have been uplifted towards different importances. What is the best thing you have found about getting older? Learning more about who I really am and about what really matters in life. Berlei Curves ranges from a full-breasted D to G cup, and a full figured size 10-24 on selected ranges. For stockists please call 1800 645 045 or visit www.berlei.com.au
cover story My all time favourite food is… plain white rice. The talent I wish I had but don’t is... the ability to be mysterious. I refuse to... become a snob. I feel great when... my family is together. The person I most admire is... my mother. My pet peeve is... I run a bath, walk away, only to come back and find the plug has come out and I’ve been wasting precious water! I don’t like anyone, least of all myself, wasting water. The thing that always makes me laugh is... my brother Phil’s wicked sense of humour. My favourite way to stay active is... to do heaps of gigs. What I most value in my friends is... high volume and interesting communication. I hope my daughter... will always be loved, as I am. I did it once, but never again will I... be persuaded out of what I know is a really good idea. My idea of bliss is... a hot bath with a good book. My idea of the depths of misery is... stranded at an airport without a travelling companion, a dead phone and maxed out cards.

body contouring after massive
weight loss
Have you had gastric banding or lap band surgery? Now that you have your weight under control, how do you get rid of those extra rolls that no longer fit? A total body lift might seem like a drastic measure, but it may just be the answer for you!
T
otal body lifting is becoming a popular cosmetic surgery request. It is an excellent solution to difficult situations in which individuals are troubled by redundant abdominal skin, lax muscles, sagging buttocks, thighs and excess fat. The procedure will give confidence to the individual and allow them to wear clothes that were previously unsuitable. The results are dramatic and the effects are generally long lasting providing you follow a balanced diet and exercise regularly. Total body lift surgery is suitable for people who have had significant weight loss or for those who have excessive sheets of skin draping their bodies for reasons other than the weight loss. This excess skin and fat has no natural way of re-shaping itself to the body’s new form. However, one should know that this is not an operation for obesity. Any patient who is more than 50% over their ideal body weight should consider a weight loss reduction program. Skin on your trunk is usually stretched by one of two means – either loss of skin tone or increased fat. Once fat is lost, the degree to which the skin retracts to its initial state depends on a handful of factors. The main factor that will prevent skin from retracting is loss of skin tone. Although you can strengthen the underlying muscles and lose the remaining fat, there is no method (other than surgery) of tightening the overlying skin. What is involved in a body lift? A body lift is essentially a combination of an abdominoplasty with a lateral thigh and buttock lift. Like many operations, a body lift needs to address several components to achieve the best results. Addressing one component without considering the others is likely to provide a sub-optimal result. Consultation You should expect to spend around an hour with Dr Doyle and his Client Advisor, Kath. During this time, he will take a thorough history and examination, measurements of your waist, buttock and thigh dimensions and the quality and thickness of overlying tissue. This will help Dr Doyle plan which is the most appropriate surgical technique for you. Dr Doyle is a fully qualified Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon specialising in cosmetic surgery. He is a member of the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons, the Australasian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Dr Doyle has more than 25 years experience in all areas of cosmetic, plastic and reconstructive surgery and offers a variety of surgical and non-surgical treatments. In order to keep abreast of the latest surgical techniques and innovations, Dr Doyle regularly attends international meetings in America and Europe, as well as meetings of the Australian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and the advanced Australian Aesthetic Surgery workshops. Post operative care Dr Doyle and the staff at Gold Coast Plastic Surgery will provide you with the best possible after care, which is individualised to suit your needs. Multiple visits during the year after your procedure will ensure the best outcome possible. Want to discuss your options? Dr Doyle and his team will help you decide which course of action is best for you to achieve and maintain the figure that you seek. We recognise that all patients are individuals and the staff at Gold Coast Plastic Surgery ensure that each patient is consulted based on your individual needs Cost and consultation To arrange a consultation, please call the friendly staff at Gold Coast Plastic Surgery today on 07 5598 0988.

Exercise
in disguise
If the thought of going to the gym makes you shudder, fear not; research shows that incidental exercise can be of more benefit to long term weight loss and maintenance than a session at the gym.
For Fun Play with the kids; there is no better exercise. While you are playing with them, watch what they do – running, jumping, chasing, throwing – they are all fantastic ways to burn calories.
Incidental activity is any activity built up in small amounts over the day, such as walking up a flight of stairs or walking to the shops. While these activities might seem insignificant when looked at individually, if you add them up they can amount to significant calorie burning activities. Here are some tips to include incidental exercise into your everyday life.
Instead of going to the movies for the afternoon, go for a long walk.
Take up a sport. No matter what age you are, you are never to old to try a new sport or to rekindle an interest in a sport you played years ago. You’ll be surprised at how quickly you pick it up, and you will get a real sense of accomplishment from it. Make love! If you put enough energy and effort in, sex can be a great way to burn calories and get your heart rate up.
Get your groove on. Research shows that the right choice of music can increase your calorie burning
by up to 20%
So put on some fast-paced tunes and get moving.
26 slim magazine WINTEr 2011
Aim to include five of these each day, and you will soon notice a difference.
At Home Stand on your tippy toes whenever you can – it’s a great workout for your calves. While you are waiting for the kettle to boil, toast to pop, or microwave to go beep, jump up and down or run on the spot. It’s a great way to give your heart rate a little kick start. If you have stairs, run up and down them a couple of times, as often as you can. If you only have one or two stairs, jog up and down on that stair for a minute at a time. When you are carrying the groceries from the car, carry them one bag at a time so you need to do more trips to and from the car. Before each meal, set yourself a small exercise task around the house such as running around the house once or running up and down the stairs. See everything as an opportunity for exercise – cleaning the windows is a great chance to stretch, getting the mail is a chance to walk.
When you wake up in the morning, spend five minutes doing some stretching. This will get your heart started and will make you feel good for the rest of the day.
Walk to the shops instead of driving. Obviously this can’t be done if you are doing a large shop, but if you only have a few things to get, grab a backpack and think of the groceries as weights to help you burn even more calories. When you are watching television try to be more active than simply sitting down; run on the spot, touch your toes, or do some star jumps during each ad break. It will help you burn calories, and will also reduce the chance that you will snack on junk food during the show.
When you are doing housework such as hanging out washing or cleaning up around the house, really put all your effort into it, and turn it into a mini workout.
slim-magazine.com.au 27
Walk up and down the stairs instead of taking the lift or escalators. If you are on a very high floor and taking the stairs the whole way isn’t reasonable; try taking the stairs for the last five floors.
Volunteer to do the office coffee run.
Instead of eating lunch at your desk, take time to go for a walk, even if it is just around the block.
At Work Every hour, go for a quick walk to the other side of the office. Not only will this give you a little kick start, it will also give your eyes a break from the computer and your back a much-needed stretch. Stand whenever you can. If you are taking a phone call or reading through some papers, stand up. If there is somewhere you can go, such as the bathroom or sick bay, take time out every hour or so to do something to get your heart rate up such as running on the spot for sixty seconds. Rather than picking up the phone to speak to a colleague somewhere else in the office, get up and walk over to them. 28 slim magazine WinTer 2011
Cycle or walk to work instead of driving. If you live too far away for this, park a distance away from work; or at the very least, if you have a work car park, park the car further away from the entry.

EAT YOUR HEART OUT If you reach for the Tim Tams every time you feel a little down, don’t worry you are not alone. Emotional eating affects thousands of Australians everyday and is one of the key factors in weight gain. But understanding the triggers can help overcome the problem.
E
motional eating is a common problem among dieters, and is often cited as a key reason why many diets fail. Experts estimate that approximately 75% of all overeating is emotional. Of course, we are all driven to eat by emotions at some stage, but it is when it is done to excess or as an automatic response to stressful or painful situations that it becomes a problem. Identifying the problem and understanding why we do it is a big part of winning the battle. Once you have done this you can take steps to change your habits and eventually break the cycle. RECOGNISING EMOTIONAL EATING We all succumb to emotional eating at some stage, but problematic emotional eating can be identified as a binge-like relationship with food in times of stress. Many people cite instances of a stressful situation triggering a food binge where they can consume as much food as they would normally eat in a day. One woman on a dieting blog said that a problem with a co-worker resulted in her binging for two hours; eating two packets of chocolate biscuits, and over a litre of milk. This woman described how she didn’t enjoy this food at all, in fact she felt ill and became very upset afterwards, but she felt it was uncontrollable. Emotional eating makes sense: a recent study published in Nature Magazine, found our brain releases a pleasure hormone when our stomach is full. Simply put, when our tummies are full, we feel happy. HISTORY REPEATING ITSELF Like most human behaviour, emotional eating generally has a recognisable pattern. Identifying this pattern is essential if you are going to beat the habit. If you can identify the pattern, you can pre-empt problem situations and put in place steps to ensure you don’t overeat when facing stress. The most obvious way to identify emotional eating is to ask yourself if you are genuinely hungry
30 slim magazine WINTEr 2011
or if you are responding emotionally. If you are genuinely hungry, you are likely to accept a healthy meal, whereas emotional eaters will be looking for a quick fix of comfort food. The basic rule is, if you are eating when you aren’t genuinely hungry, it is considered emotional eating. FIXING THE PROBLEM Most experts agree the best way to overcome emotional eating is to distract yourself. This is a great method because hopefully it will lead to an eventual end to emotional eating. The key is to find something else to do that makes you feel better when life throws a stressful or upsetting situation your way. These can include calling a friend, going for a long walk, playing with an animal or child, painting, listening to music, watching a movie, taking a bath, taking part in meditation or yoga. The first few times you attempt to do one of these things, rather than eat a block of chocolate, it probably won’t feel fantastic because you are breaking a habit. Your body and mind are used to you behaving a certain way, and you need to train it to expect a different response. So even though it may feel strange, stick with it. GIVE YOURSELF A CHANCE Organisation is the key to changing any behavioural habits – including emotional eating. So give yourself the best chance of success by planning to respond in another way. Make sure there isn’t comfort food readily available. And most importantly, recognise when a situation has the potential to cause you to eat emotionally and take steps to counteract that. For example, if you know that your Monday morning staff meeting stresses you out, and you usually eat chocolate afterwards, have your trainers handy and plan to go for a ten minute walk straight after the meeting. Helpful information on emotional eating can be found at www.psychology.org.au

Top ten superfoods Not all foods were created equal - some are so packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, essential fatty acids and other beneficial substances that they’ve been deemed “superfoods”. Superfoods have incredible health benefits, packing a powerful nutritional punch that helps protect against cancer and heart disease, lower cholesterol, protect the organs from toxins and improve digestive health. Some nutritionists even say superfoods can help you live longer. Here are 10 superfoods that can supercharge your diet, including fruits, vegetables, dairy, legumes, grains and fish.
Broccoli: This vegetable is loaded with vitamin C, folic acid and carotenoids, which are packed with vitamin A and can protect your cells from the damage of free radicals, enhance immune system function and improve reproductive health. Just one serving (1 medium stalk) provides 175 per cent of the recommended daily value of vitamin K, which helps build strong bones and plays an important role in blood clotting. Just half a cup of broccoli per day is also said to help prevent a number of cancers, particularly cancers of the lung, colon, rectum and stomach.
Lentils: Among the most nutritious legumes, lentils are a great source of cholesterol-lowering fibre and lean protein. They contain lots of iron and B vitamins and are very filling, yet low in calories. Folate and magnesium also contribute to heart heath and improve the flow of blood, oxygen and nutrients throughout the body. 32 slim magazine WINTEr 2011

1 Acai: This exotic berry from the Amazon has been the subject of intense hype, but there’s a good reason why it’s so trendy. Named by famed nutritionist Nicholas Perricone as his number one superfood and one of the most powerful foods in the world, acai (pronounced ah-sigh-ee) contains a remarkable concentration of antioxidants, amino acids and essential fatty acids. It’s considered one of nature’s best offerings to combat premature ageing thanks to its high monounsaturated oleic acid content. Oleic acid helps omega-3 fish oils penetrate cell membranes, making them more supple.
Yoghurt: It’s alive! Yoghurt contains active cultures known as “friendly bacteria” that restore healthy balance in the digestive system. Among the most well-known cultures is Lactobacillus acidophilus, which passes through the stomach and populates the intestines, helping the body fight off infection. One cup contains 50 per cent more calcium than the same size serving of milk, and it’s also full of potassium, riboflavin, magnesium and phosphate.
Sweet potatoes: They’ll satisfy your craving for starches but are far healthier than their white, nutritionally lacking cousins. Carotenoids, vitamin C, potassium and fibre are just a few of the benefits of eating this savoury-sweet veggie, which is ranked among the highest vegetables on the nutrition scale. Sweet potatoes can help stabilise blood sugar, making them a great choice for diabetics, and are relatively low in calories.
Goji berries: They’ve been called the most nutritionally dense food on Earth, and they taste something like salty raisins. Lycium barbarum, commonly known as goji berries, contain more vitamin C than oranges, more beta carotene than carrots and more iron than steak. The dried Himalayan fruit is also a great source of B vitamins and antioxidants and contains 15 amino acids. Goji has been used medicinally in China for centuries to improve eyesight and blood circulation, strengthen the limbs, protect the liver, increase libido and boost immune function.
6
Barley: This low-glycemic grain is high in both soluble and insoluble fibre, which help the body metabolise fats and promote a healthy digestive tract, respectively. Eating hulled barley on a regular basis is said to lower blood cholesterol levels, protect against cancer and keep blood-sugar levels stable. Barley is rich in niacin, vitamin E, lignans and phytochemicals that function as antioxidants.
Blueberries: Hidden within the juicy, deep blue-purple flesh of this tasty fruit is cancer-fighting ellagic acid, an antioxidant that has been proven in laboratory research to slow the growth of some cancerous tumours. Blueberry extracts have also been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties and help prevent infectious bacteria from clinging to the walls of the gut, bladder and urethra.
Kale: A dark, leafy green in the same vegetable family as broccoli and brussels sprouts, kale contains high amounts of beta carotene, iron and folate. It’s also a low-calorie, low-carb source of protein that’s packed with fibre, which improves digestive health and helps you feel full. A small cupful of cooked kale provides more than half the recommended daily allowance of vitamin C.
Wild salmon: Packed with omega-3 fats, wild salmon can help reduce the risk of sudden-death heart attacks and contains lots of vitamin D and selenium for healthy hair, skin, nails and bones. Wild salmon can be eaten with little fear of mercury or excess contaminants and is more nutritionally rich than farmed salmon. Wild salmon also has a smaller environmental impact. Consume two to four four-ounce servings a week for optimal benefits. Source: AP

the diet devil details IS IN THE
With Taryn Swift, dietitian APD, WeightLoss Solutions Australia Every week at WeightLoss Solutions Australia I see 20 to 30 people who are trying to lose weight. One of the most frequent comments people make when we first meet is: “I really don’t eat that much to be this overweight”. The fact is, overeating does not necessarily require one to eat a huge amount of takeaway and junk food; it is often more subtle than that. We all have a specific amount of energy (kilojoules) we need to consume each day to maintain our current weight. This energy requirement is estimated using formulas that consider your age, gender, height, weight, level of physical activity and health conditions. Once you have reached your required level of energy intake, anything else you eat is stored as body fat. Consider an adult who requires 8500Kj per day to maintain their weight. If they were to exceed this by as little as 200Kj every day, they could gain about 2kg over a 12 month period. Continue this pattern for 20 years and it’s not hard to see how 30-40kg of extra weight can creep up on you. Let’s look at a few really easy ways for those extra 200Kj to slip in without even noticing:
Regular sized flat white instead of small size............................................extra 200kj
A liberal spread of butter or margarine rather than a thin scraping...extra 200kj
A 200ml glass of wine instead of the 100ml standard drink..................extra drink.................. 285kj
One teaspoon of sugar in your three cups of tea each day......................extra 200kj
It’s not hard to tip your daily energy intake above and beyond what you really need; and, it’s certainly not made any easier when we live in a supersized world. We’re constantly presented with tempting offers like two chocolate bars for only $5, when all we wanted was petrol or a loaf of bread. The bottom line is: most of us are eating a bit more than we need each day. Try cutting back on the small things and make it a habit for the rest of your life. It will make a difference in the long run. And, keep in mind, the bigger the serving size in front of you, the more you will eat.

he changes to eating habits that need to be made after weight loss surgery include choosing nutritious foods, eating smaller meals, eating slowly, chewing well and avoiding some food textures such as tough, dry meats or fresh, doughy breads. Many find they are able to adapt to these changes at home, but may be faced with some challenges when dining out. Following weight loss surgery, it is still possible to eat out at your favourite restaurants and enjoy great food, but it can take a bit of practice, and planning ahead. To see how people enjoy the dining experience after weight loss surgery, Slim magazine recently attended a patient dinner hosted by WeightLoss Solutions Australia. The evening, which was held at the divine Spendelove restaurant, at Ferry Road Markets, was a fantastic opportunity for patients to get together and share their experiences, while enjoying a meal that was nutritious and appropriate in texture.

Eating out tips from the experts “When I go out to dinner I always call ahead and ask the restaurant if they can serve me one of their mains, but 50% smaller than the usual size. I would rather do this than leave half the food on my plate and waste it. Most of the restaurants are happy to do this when I ring in advance.” – Bruce “I order what I want from the menu, and when the food arrives I put the amount I know I can eat on a side plate for myself, then my family shares the rest of my meal between them. They love it!” – Maree

The Verdict “Since having a gastric band, the volume of food I can eat has decreased and the food texture needs to be easy to digest. It still astounds me how wonderful I feel on a small amount of food. I was very satisfied with tonight’s meal, I loved all of it. It was well prepared with so much variety in flavour with each dish. This is a wonderful function to allow weight loss patients to enjoy a meal with like people and enjoy a social setting that allows people to discuss their successes and failures.” – Maree
“I loved the food tonight, the texture was amazing. I was very satisfied after the meal, however the quantity was still too much for me, so I could not get through all of it.” – Lisa
“The fish was lovely and the slow cooked lamb texture was great. The sweets choice was light, tasty and wonderful to eat. The ginger was nice. Tonight’s meal was great and all the sizes were just right. Good food, good company, a great night. It is great to enjoy a wonderful night out.” – Bruce
“The fish was excellent; the lamb was beautifully braised and tender. I was able to eat all the entree, half the main meal and all the dessert. I particularly liked the currants in the pesto and salmon – a surprising sweet taste. The parfait was amazing, especially the blood orange reduction. Presentation was excellent, complex and the complementary flavours were so good.” – Sue (with dietitian Taryn Swift on left).
“After tonight’s meal I was quite full, but it was delicious. I loved the food; the portion sizes were great and beautifully presented. The dessert was to die for. It was good to have small portions rather than waste food. I really enjoyed tonight, not just the wonderful food but finding people who are going through the same experience is great. Loved it!” – Heidi
Hosts Dr Laurent Layani and Felicity Cohen
“The food was very nice, especially the meat, nice and soft, easy to digest. I would have been full just on the first course, so I didn’t finish the whole serving. The meal was lovely and definitely filling, I was very satisfied. I loved the lamb, it was nice and soft and easy to eat. The variety of flavours was stunning, very surprising, especially the additions on the lamb. It was wonderful.” – Narelle

to eat not to eat OR
Is your weight being affected by your eating behaviour?
With psychologist Warren Artz, WeightLoss Solutions Australia
So, you’re putting on weight... again. Summer is over and winter is turning out to be a cold and wet one, where the Gold Coast looks more like London, minus the big red buses, with men in dreary grey suits, and women doing their best to dress like Kate Middleton. Even though it’s not really that cold here, winter does bring with it challenges for the waistline. It’s a time when excuses to not exercise are rife and justification for poorer eating habits is standard. Comfort is the key; comfort food the ultimate companion. There is no doubt that going from an active lifestyle to a sedentary one is likely to be a major contributor to any weight gain, but maladaptive eating behaviours are also largely to blame, particularly during these times. Understanding whether your maladaptive eating patterns are subsequent to dieting and restriction, or emotionally driven may help in identifying just where you are most vulnerable in sabotaging any weight loss efforts. It may be time to pay some serious attention to your eating habits if you want to lose weight or, at best, not gain any weight over the winter period. Overeating: Many of us have experienced discomfort from overeating; however, there are also many people out there who are not fully aware of their overeating habits. In other words, the internal cues such as hunger, appetite, satiety, or fullness are difficult to discern. In some cases there’s even a conscious decision to eat “just because”. Developing a mindful approach to eating is essential in changing this behaviour, so internal cues are recognised. Portion control is essential to successful and sustainable weight loss, so behavioural alternatives to overeating will need to be included in a weight reduction program. Binge Eating: This can be driven by psychological factors or physiological factors. There are biological consequences to restrictive eating patterns, or semi-starvation. The most prevalent factor is an unhealthy pre-occupation with food, along with increased pressure to eat and binge eating. Binge eating can also be a reactive process, when initiated through an intense state of hunger. Restrained eating patterns do little to help with weight loss. In fact, they contribute to the exact opposite: weight gain. Eating regularly - three meals a day - is the first step in a healthy weight loss plan. Grazing: This behaviour can develop out of habit and usually involves a mindless approach to eating. A grazer is someone who typically spends a great deal of time throughout the day picking at foods. The foods are usually consumed in smaller amounts but can quickly exceed daily calorie needs. Grazers may also justify their actions by believing they hardly eat anything at all, because they don’t eat at meal times, or eat very little then. Grazers may also be the compulsive type, finding it hard to avoid or say no to food that is readily available. Their habits can also be emotionally driven, particularly in times of stress and sadness and especially if they are already distressed by a weight problem. Learning to control compulsive behaviours may be the first step in building a weight loss program. Night Eating Syndrome: This is best defined as skipping breakfast at least four days a week and consuming more than 50% of your daily caloric intake after 7pm. It also usually includes difficulties with sleep, both falling asleep and staying asleep, at least four days a week. Somebody who suffers from night eating syndrome isn’t necessarily a person who wakes up in the middle of the night and either consciously or unconsciously raids the fridge and pantry, but can certainly include these people. You’ll be amazed how many people actually fall into this category, with many being a combination of two or three of the other maladaptive behaviours above. The amount of people I meet who skip breakfast is astounding. They’re all overweight and all want to lose weight. If you can’t learn to eat breakfast you will never achieve sustainable, healthy weight loss. If your first meal of the day is lunch, you may be very surprised to learn you’re probably consuming more than 50% of your calories after 7pm. Combine this with at least four days of difficulty with sleep and there you have it; you may be suffering from night eating syndrome.

real life weight loss stories
again
beginning
Jozsef Zsolti’s decision to undergo sleeve gastrectomy surgery for weight loss in July 2010, has given him a life he never thought possible.
A
t 56 years of age, Jozsef Zsolti was suffering from a number of weight-related health complications, including diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. To make matters worse, his kidneys were failing and he was facing a premature death. Joszef weighed 115kg and his BMI (Body Mass Index) was 39; he had uncontrollable eating habits, and his quality of life was diminishing beyond expectation. After trying for many years to maintain a healthier lifestyle and avoid diabetes, Jozsef felt he had run out of options to get control over his poor eating habits. He began searching for weight loss alternatives that would allow him to live a longer, more fruitful life. These were difficult times for Jozsef. He felt he had no alternative but to consider weight loss surgery, but he had so many questions and so many reservations. He needed advice and he needed it fast. He had become dependent on insulin to control his diabetes and was really concerned about his health and future. That is when WeightLoss Solutions Australia came into Jozsef ’s life. “The team at WeightLoss Solutions Australia were able to guide me and provide me with the support I needed to accept surgery as my only option and appreciate the benefits of having surgery. They understood my concerns and were there to help me all the way,” he said. Sleeve gastrectomy is an alternative weight loss procedure to gastric banding, involving the laparoscopic (keyhole surgery) removal of about 75% of the stomach organ, without any re-routing of the intestinal tract. With all intestinal connections maintained there are no malabsorption problems after surgery and expected weight loss results are very good, if not excellent, with most patients losing up to 50% of their excess body weight in the first 12 months.
40 slim magazine WINTEr 2011
The procedure is an extremely effective weight loss alternative for those who prefer an irreversible option that needs little, if any, ongoing maintenance following surgery. Sleeve gastrectomy reduces the food holding capacity of the stomach, leading to early satiety and fullness from a small meal. The results for Jozsef and many others like him have been life-changing. Jozsef believes that his decision to undergo sleeve gastrectomy has given him back the quality of life he once so enjoyed. Within two months of having surgery his blood sugars were in the non-diabetic range; he was off his insulin and no longer facing a lifetime of medication to control his diabetes. He took that allimportant step to change his life and feels so much younger and healthier for it. Dr Layani, head surgeon from WeightLoss Solutions Australia said: “The results for Jozsef have been nothing short of amazing; he no longer lives with diabetes and his cholesterol levels are normal, as is his blood pressure. I see many patients come into the clinic suffering from chronic illnesses and to see them walk away healthy is fantastic!” Just ten months after surgery, Jozsef is thrilled with the changes to his life. “This surgery has meant a notso-sad farewell to all of the medications I was taking. I am now 100% healthy and living a fulfilled lifestyle that, at one point, I thought would be never possible. I have lost 30.5kg and my BMI is below 30 for the first time in many years!” e in man Dr Layani’s extensive experience in laparoscopic surgery dates back to 1994. He has performed more than 3000 weight loss procedures over the last 10 years and his clinic, WeightLoss Solutions Australia, is on the grounds of John Flynn Private Hospital, Tugun.
SLEEVE GASTRECTOMY – THE BENEFITS Dr Layani, head surgeon from WeightLoss Solutions Australia, identifies the benefits of sleeve gastrectomy for weight loss surgery: • Volume of stomach is reduced without malabsorption • No foreign body implantation (as with gastric band) • Does not require follow up visits for adjustments (as with gastric band) • Almost all foods are well-tolerated and do not cause discomfort • Difficult to overeat high calorie liquids (milkshakes) or soft foods (chocolates) • Hunger stimulating hormone Ghrelin is removed, decreasing appetite • Procedure is minimally invasive (keyhole surgery), leading to early recovery • Considered a safer procedure for high risk or morbidly obese patients • Weight loss is rapid and often leads to early remission of weight-related complications
Most patients lose up to 50% of their excess body weight in the first 12 months.
GASTRIC
BANDING
Is it for you? A modern day perspective
If you’ve struggled with your weight for many years, or have found your recent weight gain starting to impact on your quality of life, then you may be one of the many people these days considering a more permanent solution to this growing problem.
42 slim magazine WinTer 2011
S
tatistics show that 95 per cent of all diets fail, which is why gastric banding surgery continues to grow in popularity, but there are still many questions being asked about the suitability of gastric band surgery. Psychologist Warren Artz and dietitian Taryn Swift of WeightLoss Solutions Australia answer some commonly asked questions.
How popular is gastric banding in Australia and how effective is it?
About 11,000 people choose to have lap band surgery in Australia every year. Gastric banding was first performed in Australia back in 1994 and is the most commonly performed weight loss procedure in Australia today. There is strong evidence that people who are obese can benefit substantially from gastric banding surgery, with around 80% of people losing 50-60% of their excess body weight. Most will subsequently also experience a significant improvement or remission of weight-related health conditions, such as type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. The International Diabetes Federation recently released a position statement supporting the use of weight loss surgery as an acceptable treatment option for people with obesity and type 2 diabetes.

Who is eligible for gastric banding?
To be eligible for gastric banding surgery you should have a BMI of at least 30, with at least one weight-related medical complication, or a BMI of at least 35 if you have no weight-related complications. You should be between the ages of 18 and 75; however, in some circumstances, you may be approved for surgery if you fall outside of these age limitations. For best results it is important to adhere to medical, dietary, and psychological advice before and after surgery, which is why having an experienced team of health professionals to advise and support you is essential in your consideration of surgery for weight loss.
Can I get the same results from dieting?
Advances in lifestyle-based approaches to weight loss mean it is reasonable to expect sustainable weight loss results of about 5-10%, particularly on a well-structured program that focuses on healthy eating habits and exercise. This is very worthwhile for individuals with a BMI less than 30 but, in most cases, inadequate for those who are obese or severely obese. By combining weight loss surgery with a comprehensive behavioural modification program, more durable weight loss results can be expected and achieved for obese people, allowing for more successful management of weight-related complications.
Will I still be able to enjoy my food?
Gastric banding is a procedure that helps reduce the food holding capacity of the stomach and should leave you feeling full after eating a small meal. The band also helps in keeping you satisfied from your meal for longer to alleviate the need to eat more or between meals. It is primarily designed to assist those who eat larger portions of food at meal times and need something to help them control their hunger in a more manageable way. You should be able to tolerate a wide range of foods, which is what makes gastric banding such an attractive procedure, allowing you to continue enjoying family dinners and nights out at restaurants or parties. For some people, certain foods, such as white bread and overcooked or dry meats, are not well tolerated. High calorie foods and drinks, such as beer, soft drink, chocolate, and ice-cream are not limited by the band because of their soft or liquid form, so it’s important to use good judgment when including these foods in your diet. And, yes, it is possible to find a way to include these foods in your diet and enjoy them in a responsible manner when you have a gastric band.
What about the cost and the risks?
In Australia the majority of gastric banding procedures are performed in the private sector, making access to treatment difficult for many people, particularly those also affected by the recent natural disasters across the country. For many, gastric banding surgery will have to wait for better days; however, take into consideration the amount of time and money you may have already spent and wasted on fad diets, pills, and exercise programs
that didn’t work. And, consider the potential loss of time and ongoing costs for future non-surgical attempts at weight loss that have little, if any, long-term efficacy. For those suffering from the effects of obesity, consider also the future health costs and risks of not doing anything , which far outweigh the risks of having gastric band surgery. General risks with gastric banding surgery are very low (less than 1%), which is one of the reasons the procedure is favoured by so many Australians as the solution to their weight problems. Gastric banding is also a reversible procedure; so, in the case of unexpected complications, the band can be removed. Dr Laurent Layani is an experienced laparoscopic weight loss surgeon who understands the difficulties shared by so many overweight or obese Australians. He recognises the need to make gastric banding more accessible to the general population so that people no longer see cost as a barrier to weight loss surgery and improvements to their quality of life. The cost for gastric banding surgery in 2011 is actually half of what it was in 2010. If you were to have gastric banding surgery today, you would save yourself about $2,500, or roughly 50% off the normal out-of-pocket costs for the actual surgical procedure. These savings are available to both insured and uninsured patients; although, uninsured patients will still have to consider the cost of private hospital fees. This is still a significant saving and an indication gastric banding is no longer an exclusive option, but a more widely accepted form of treatment for sustainable weight loss. “I would really like to see more people given the opportunity to make a difference to their lives, especially their health and longevity. I can’t think of a better way to help than reduce the cost of Lap Band Surgery for everyone, in the hope that more people will take advantage of this weight loss procedure and regain the quality of life they so desperately need.” Dr Laurent Layani.
What are my other options?
Careful consideration should be exercised when choosing a weight loss surgeon, since an experienced surgeon, backed by an experienced multidisciplinary team, will not only be able to support you appropriately, but will also assist you in making the right decision regarding which weight loss procedure is best for you. It’s important to have your general health habits, eating-related habits and attitudes, lifestyle, and weight loss objectives assessed prior to making this decision, since gastric banding may not be the most suitable option for you. An experienced surgeon may suggest other alternatives, like sleeve gastrectomy, to help you with your weight problems. This procedure is a worthwhile alternative to gastric banding for many patients and leads to equally good results for sustainable weight loss. There are also non-surgical options, like the Orbera Intragastric Balloon for those who need to lose between 10 and 15kg and are looking for a solution that doesn’t involve surgery. Trauma
insurance Drake Insurance expert Kelvin Fair says trauma or critical illness insurance provides a safety net that is as important as life insurance.
Illness can strike at any time, but families can now be protected from financial disaster
When accident or illness strikes your family, the last thing you need to worry about is your finances. Unfortunately many families are unprepared financially for a medical crisis and this can have far-reaching effects. Drake Insurance expert Kelvin Fair says trauma insurance provides a cash lump sum when a medical condition is diagnosed. “The number of conditions covered varies, but the most common claims cover cancer, heart attack, coronary bypass, and stroke, although numerous conditions can be covered,” Mr Fair says. “We all plan to lead long healthy lives but it is difficult to predict the likelihood of illnesses like Alzheimer’s, aplastic anaemia, blindness, liver disease, the need for an organ transplant, or a myriad of other serious conditions. Trauma insurance pays much needed cash when diagnosis is confirmed - not when death occurs as the result of a condition. “This provides people and their families with a lump sum of cash when it is needed for medical care, or to pay the mortgage and other debts to relieve financial pressure. The choice of cover depends on individual circumstances. People who have heavy debts and are at pre-retirement age will realise the importance of this cover. “A critical illness can be just as damaging to family finances as a death and more so if medical bills result from a long lasting illness. Recovery is certainly possible from the illnesses covered by trauma insurance, but financial stress will not help. Income protection covers sickness or accident related injury causing temporary inability to work. There is room for both types of cover, but trauma insurance is usually the only option for people who are not currently working,” Mr Fair says. Mr Fair says some trauma policies also include a death benefit. “There may be advantages in buying life cover as part of a trauma package, rather than as a standalone policy. Some trauma policies also cover total and permanent disabilities.” For more information contact Kelvin Fair at Drake Insurance and Investment Services.

Why is it that no matter how hard we work to stay fit and healthy, some of us are afflicted with cellulite?
a cellulite
solution that really
works
50 slim magazine WinTer 2011
S
imply put, cellulite is a hardening of the connective tissue which traps cells of fat, causing dimpling in the skin, giving it an appearance similar to that of orange peel. Statistics show that up to 90 per cent of post adolescent women develop cellulite (and to make matters worse, it is rarely seen in men!). Over the years there have been many creams, lotions and treatments designed to treat cellulite. All make promises, but few, if any, have delivered. The problem is that cellulite is caused deep in the skin tissue – not on the surface of the skin. So creams are not capable of penetrating deep enough to effectively treat cellulite. Even diet and exercise isn’t enough to budge cellulite, because cellulite occurs in the layer of superficial fat. That is why women’s magazines gleefully publish pictures of models and celebrities who suffer from cellulite. Thin, fit, healthy women get cellulite too. The key is to remember that weight loss and cellulite need to be treated separately. But before you resign yourself to a life of lumpy skin, there is some very good news for the sufferers of cellulite. With Acoustic Wave Therapy™ (AWT) women can achieve a long term solution for smoother skin in the areas where skin dimpling commonly forms – the thighs, buttocks, abdomen and arms. No gimmicks, no empty promises. AWT is a scientific solution that has seen genuine results. Like many great inventions AWT was discovered by accident. The treatment is adapted from European technology originally designed to ease the pain associated with poor circulation, stiff joints and torn or damaged muscles. It was during a treatment process for female athletes in the German Olympic Team that the improvements in cellulite appearance were discovered by accident. AWT is a product of Storz Medical Ag, who have been the world market leaders in the supply and development of technology in the shock wave field since 1987. Their equipment for the treatment and disintegration of kidney stones can be found in many major hospitals throughout the world. After much clinical research this ground-breaking technology has been adapted to treat the complex problem of cellulite. AWT destroys the hardened connective tissue, allowing the bodies natural healing process to take over and, fresh new elastic tissue to grow.
Celebrity Fan: According to the New York Daily Times, Madonna has spent over 50,000 pounds on her own AWT machine.
The surrounding fat cells responsible for the dimpled effect of cellulite are sufficiently disrupted to cause increased permeability and leakage, which is then carried away via the lymphatic system. Simultaneously, vibration is induced in the connective tissue by delivering acoustic pulses to the treatment area which ultimately leads to increased vascularisation and the creation of a new, thickened band of collagen in the upper and mid portions of the skin, which also restricts the bulging of fat cells on the skins surface. The result of this treatment is restored elasticity in connective tissue, and noticeably smoother skin. Noticeable improvement typically occurs between the third and fourth treatment. Patients are offered this quick, painless and affordable treatment typically twice a week, for four to six weeks, depending on the individual. So if cellulite is a problem for you, take some time to learn more about AWT. Katrina Peacock and her team at Parlour P Skin Rejuvenation Clinic are experts in delivering AWT, and can discuss your individual concerns and goals. Call 07 5538 1844 or go to www.parlourp.com.au

Nice girls finish FAT
In her book Nice Girls Finish Fat: Put Yourself First and Change Your Eating Forever, Karen R. Koenig tells us how to prevent overeating around your family.
I
f anyone can push your buttons, family members can. After all, they not only know what all your buttons are, some of them were responsible for creating them to begin with. One of the biggest problems with food and family is that they’re both around a lot – together. You’re visiting your mother, sitting in her kitchen drinking coffee surrounded by food, out with your sister for a monthly dinner, making lunch or a snack for the kids at home. When family comes to visit, it’s often for a meal, especially a holiday one. Another reason family interactions can make you nutty is that family history goes back such a long way. Within your family of origin, you’ve been playing nice girl for decades. You’re locked into particular ways of relating that you and they are probably not even aware of. They can shoot up your blood pressure by a look or a word and make you want to beat a fast retreat before you’ve even taken off your coat. Moreover, we like to put family in a special, idealised category – the people who have to take us in, the folks who will go to any lengths for us because we’re blood, those who love us most (or so they say). We often expect more from family than from non-family members, which makes it even worse when they let us down. We might let other folks get away with being ignorant or petty or having faults in general, but we have high standards for relatives, just as they do for us. 52 slim magazine WinTer 2011
Especially if you’re the Jill-of-all-trades and family caretaker, the assumptions and expectations members have of you is a setup for high stress and low satisfaction all around. And for you climbing into your kitchen cabinet and staying there. Okay, okay already, you might be saying, I get it. Sometimes I’m more there for family members than for myself, but what can I do about it in practical terms? I just can’t stop being me and turn into someone else overnight. I have responsibilities and I’m not gonna drop ’em all and fly off to Tahiti tomorrow with Brad Pitt! Of course you’re not. Far be it from me to suggest that you go from being a goody-goody to a good-for-nothing. To give you a taste of what to do in real, practical, everyday terms, I’ve developed a No More Nice Girl Manifesto for you to live by around your family, a list of do’s and dont’s for how to think and behave to give yourself that nice-ectomy you need and start turning around your relationship with food.
No More
Nice Girl Do’s & Dont’s
Maintain lots of contact with family members who are kind and caring about you and avoid ones who are energy drainers and aren’t looking out for your interests. Make sure family members are doing their fair share (in physical, financial, and emotional terms) to make the family unit work. t iltgu rip
Prioritise attending family events and get-togethers rather than attend them all and feel resentful or not go and feel guilty. Ask for help taking care of difficult family members (poor old Aunt Kathy who complains about everything to everyone) or ones whose care is time-consuming (your wheelchairbound son with muscular dystrophy). Seek balance in relationships. If you’re taking physical care of someone who can’t do for himself, he should at the very least be appreciative and thank you in every way he can. Take time for yourself whether family members like it or not. Tell family members when they are too demanding and their requests are out of line. Teach your children to come to you when they truly need help (physical or emotional) and to work things out for themselves when they’re able. Opt out of any adult living arrangement that is not mutual and where you feel like someone’s mother or maid. Others need to grow up and you need to let them. Delegate tasks even if family members don’t do things as well or as quickly as you’d like. You’ve been aspiring to be superhuman all your life. Give them a chance to learn how to be responsible for themselves. Develop and maintain close relationships with people outside the family. The experience will be refreshing and give you a new perspective on your blood ties.
Do take time for yourself
whether family members like it or not
Feel sorry for family members who are such miserable characters that they’ve pushed everyone else away. They made their bed, so (except in life-or-death situations) let them lie in it. Believe that you’re indispensable. You’d like to think so and perhaps family members would too, but you’re not. No one is. Let any family member guilt-trip you into doing anything you don’t want to. Feel you have to do everything yourself and that you’re weak if you ask for help. Automatically say yes to family requests. Instead, get into the habit of saying, “Let me think about it and get back to you.” Be a poor role model for your children by not taking care of yourself. If you insist on being one, make sure this book stays in good condition ’cause they’re gonna need it. Try to be strong all the time. Instead, aim for mentally healthy – a combination of independent, dependent, and interdependent. Let family members undermine your self-esteem, self-worth, or self-care – ever. Allow family members to tell you that you’re a selfish you-know-what just because you want to take time for yourself. Most likely they’re the selfish ones. Infantilise family members whether they’re old or young. Don’t prevent them from doing what they’re capable of and what is age appropriate.

the golden RULeS
While each weight loss plan is different, there are golden rules that apply to everyone. When we discover that we are heavier than we want to be, we have a natural inclination to eat less food. We may skip lunch or eat only a tiny amount of our dinner in the hope that if we eat less our body will burn off some of its fat. But that is not necessarily true. Eating less actually makes it more difficult to lose weight. People who diet without exercising often get fatter with time. Although your weight may initially drop while dieting, such weight loss consists mostly of water and muscle. When the weight returns, it comes back as fat. To avoid getting fatter over time, increase your metabolism by exercising regularly. Select an exercise routine that you are comfortable with and remember that walking is one of the best and easiest exercises for strengthening your bones, controlling your weight and toning your muscles. Start your diet with a food diary, record everything you eat, what you were doing at the time, and how you felt. That tells you about yourself, your temptation, the emotional states that encourage you to snack and may help you lose once you see how much you eat. When researchers compare overweight and thin people, they find that they eat roughly the same number of calories. What makes overweight people different is the amount of fat that they eat. Thin people tend to eat less fat and more complex carbohydrates. Losing weight is not something one can do overnight. A carefully planned weight loss program requires common sense and certain guidelines. Unfortunately, there’s a lot of misinformation floating around and lots of desperate people are easily duped and ripped off. If you’re about to cheat, allow yourself a treat, then eat only half a bite and throw the other half away. When hunger hits, wait 10 minutes before eating and see if it passes. Drink six to eight glasses of water a day. Water itself helps cut down on water retention because it acts as a diuretic. Taken before meals, it dulls the appetite by giving you that “full feeling.” Weigh yourself once a week at the same time. Your weight fluctuates constantly and you can weigh more at night than you did in the morning, a downer if you stuck to your diet all day. Make dining an event. Lose weight for yourself, not to please your husband, your parents or your friends. Make the kitchen off-limits at any time other than mealtime. Always eat at the table, never in front of the TV set or with the radio on. Concentrate on eating every mouthful slowly and savoring each morsel. Chew everything from 10 to 20 times and count! Never skip meals. Source. www.healthstatus.com

ride baby, In the nineties it was golf and aerobics; in the noughties, yoga and circuit training, but in recent years more and more people are discovering the benefits of getting on their bikes.
I
t’s environmentally sound, great for weight loss, strength and muscle building, and proven to improve circulation, lung function and heart health. Is there any wonder cycling is one of the top five recreational sports in Australia? Every year for the past ten years, more bicycles have been sold in Australia than cars. Across the world, over 130 million bicycles are sold every year. And with good reason... Lose it: Bike riding is one of the most efficient way to burn calories, and get rid of unwanted body fat. Depending on your body weight and how intense your ride is, you can burn hundreds of calories an hour. Building muscle: Riding a bike, especially if you are going uphill, is a great way to build muscle strength. Cycling uses the leg’s large and small muscles and adds tone and definition. This type of muscle building also increases your metabolic rate, which means you keep burning calories long after you’re out of the saddle. Get out: Cycling is a great way to see the outdoors and take in some fresh air. With the increase in popularity of cycling has come improved facilities; almost every town or suburb has a bike path and more often than not they are situated in the most beautiful locations in town, by lakes, rivers, beaches and open land. The new golf ? We’ve all seen the images of Tony Abbott, Leader of the Opposition, cycling as part of his commitment to good health. Corporate Australia has taken to cycling in numbers never before seen. Cycling is one of the few sports that offers participants the opportunity to socialise while exercising, and many a deal is done ‘on the road’. Put your heart in it: Cycling is a great way to improve cardiovascular health, which is essential to our general wellbeing, and reduces the risk of serious heart disease or diabetes. You’ve got a friend: Cyclists can often be seen in groups, enjoying a ride together. The social aspects of cycling are one of the sports biggest draw cards, with devotees seeing their weekly rides as fun outings rather than exercise chores. The social aspect is also a great motivator and gives greater incentive to turn up, rather than hitting snooze and going back to sleep.
safe cycling Like any sport, cycling can be dangerous if you are not prepared. Follow these tips to make sure you have many safe and enjoyable rides. Getting started: When you first start out, make sure you have a bike that is appropriate to your size, ability and intended riding. Seek the advice of a reputable bike dealer. Safety awareness: Always wear a helmet and appropriate safety gear. Keep your bicycle in good repair. Make sure you are familiar with the road rules and follow them. Dehydration: The human body is mostly made up of water. Dehydration is serious and can be fatal. Avoid strenuous cycling on hot days, take plenty of liquids with you, and stop for frequent rest and drink breaks if you are doing a long ride. Muscle injuries: Muscles and tendons are more susceptible to injury when they are cold. Always warm up with a series of gentle stretches. When you first start riding, take it easy and aim for a slow and steady increase in heart rate. Sunburn: Don’t forget to regularly reapply your sunscreen, even early in the morning or on overcast days. Even waterproof varieties can be washed off with constant sweating. RIDE
Sharing the path Shared paths are there for everyone’s use. With some courtesy and common sense everyone can enjoy them. Ride at a reasonable speed • Maintain control of your bike at all times • Keep to the left of the path and pass on the right when it is safe to do so • Announce your intention to pass • When overtaking, slow down and overtake on the right • When approaching horses, dismount and walk your bike. Horses can bolt when frightened. Source: Cycling Promotion Australia
Work it
Riding to work is a great way to improve your health, help the environment, and save money. There is evidence that people who ride to work have less time off sick and are more productive. Your bike To ride to work you don’t need an expensive bicycle but it needs to be roadworthy and ideally include a rack to carry your gear, mirrors to monitor the traffic, and good lights if you ride at night or when there is low visibility.
The gear Wearing a correctly fitting helmet is the law and makes good sense. Gloves protect your hands, keep your fingers warm and reduce jarring. Don’t forget a good lock to protect your bike from being stolen. A water bottle is also a good idea, particularly for longer trips and hot days. What to wear If you ride a short distance or if you like to take it easy on the bike, your regular clothes will be fine. If you want to work up a sweat, or for longer journeys you may want to wear cycling knits and a cycling jersey to increase comfort. They also dry easy so you have dry gear to ride home.
Plan your route Before heading off it is a good idea to plan your route by finding roads that have less traffic, bike lanes or sealed shoulders, or off road paths to get to your destination. Sometimes an alternative route is a bit longer but will be more enjoyable and safer. Seek advice Talk to other staff at your workplace who cycle to work and ask them for tips on great routes to get to your workplace. Stay alert At all times pay attention to the traffic and ensure you do not do anything to endanger yourself or other road users. Watch for people in parked cars who might open a door in your path of travel. Also watch out for pedestrians. Sources: cpf.com.au, Cycling Promotion, Health NSW

Celebrity
diet secrets
They have personal trainers, personal chefs, and access to all sorts of diet and exercise information. So what do these shapely celebs have to say for themselves? Few women look as fantastic as Heidi Klum. Smart and beautiful, the mother of four has no time for starvation or deprivation. “In many cases, the girls eat garbage – things like pancakes and waffles and a lot of junk – which is not going to help them,” she recently told the models on her show Project Runway. “You don’t need to starve, but you have to learn to look after yourself. Eat healthily. You won’t last if you’re not eating healthily.”
Like many of us, Sex and the City star Cynthia Nixon finds it hard to stick to her exercise routine. “Because I’m no good at working out on my own, I commit to taking classes two or three times a week and then I stick to it. I like to do gyrotonics, a Pilates-style regimen, and yoga,” she told Star Magazine.
With fabulous curves and a waist to die-for, Penelope Cruz wasted no time in getting her pre-baby figure back since the actress gave birth to her son Leo in January. And she didn’t do it slaving over a hot treadmill, she did it by getting her groove on. “I love ballet and it’s a little boring for me to go to the gym, because I’m used to the dancing discipline — it’s really hard but much more fun,” she has said.
Private Practice star Kate Walsh says the key to her trim figure is not in what she does or doesn’t eat; it’s in what she does and doesn’t do. I like to eat food, and I don’t diet,” she told People Magazine. “I do Pilates, and hike with my dog. As you get older, everything changes. Everything starts getting … looser. But I think it’s important to accept that. I’m lucky. I’ve got pretty good genes. But I think it’s a weird thing to fight it.”

Known for her beautiful bod, Jennifer Aniston’s diet advice is simple. “Just stop eating sh*t every day,” she allegedly told OK Magazine.
Jessica Alba is one of the most beautiful women in the world, known for her stunning face, olive skin and sensational figure. Like a lot of celebrities, her idea of indulging is a little different from that of us mere mortals. “I think people imagine I’m on a diet all the time, but I indulge,” she told a US magazine. “Just the other day I had grilled cheese, soup and salad for lunch.” Um, yeah, you really need to get that indulgent streak under control Jess; grilled cheese and salad. The decadence!
Kim Kardashian works hard to keep those curves she is famous for. She told Shape magazine: “Even though I work out every day and try to eat healthy, I’m never going to be one of those super skinny girls… I’m really proud of my curves and I hope all you curvy girls out there are embracing yours too! It’s important to work out and be the best version of yourself that you can be, but never feel like you have to be the skinniest girl in the room to be the prettiest… be confident in yourself and you’ll shine!”

Talking to
kids about
weight
Weight is a challenging subject to tackle with your child, but with some planning and sensitivity, it’s a conversation that could have life changing effects
62 slim magazine WinTer 2011
I
n today’s culture, weight is an extraordinarily sensitive subject, especially for children and teens. Deciding how to approach weight issues with young people deserves careful attention; how you handle the topic can have serious and lifelong implications. As part of their Kid’s Health program, The Sydney Children’s Hospital says the important thing to remember is to focus on healthy changes in behaviour and remind them of the positive things that they are doing. Keeping the conversation focused on “health and a healthy lifestyle” rather than weight loss is important, as it can be difficult for children to lose weight. It is difficult to discuss weight without discussing being overweight but do your best not to label people as ‘fat’ or ‘good’ or ‘bad’. You do not want your child going out into the world using these words about themselves or other people. Use phrases like ‘above average weight’ rather than words like ‘chunky’ or ‘obese’. Let your child know that you want what is best for them; you want them to be healthy and happy. Use triggers they will respond to such as “You love swimming at the beach and I want you to be as healthy as possible.” Getting your child active should not be a chore – for them or you. There is no need to tell them that you plan to get them exercising for half an hour each day; rather, take them bike riding, swimming or just a long walk. During these outings is a great time to talk and discuss how they are feeling, and to reinforce what fun it is to be active. Whatever your child’s weight, there are things you can do to help their self esteem. Compliment and encourage qualities which are not appearance related, such as “I like the way you handled that big school assignment,” “I feel proud when you look after the younger kids so well” and “It’s great that you were calm before your talk”. It may sound a little contrived to you now, but children respond best to positive reinforcement. Positive reinforcement is also great to help them stick to their healthy lifestyle. If they hear “You know, I think you’re swimming better than ever now”, they are likely to equate that with the healthy lifestyle. Watch the negative comments you make about your own body. Children and teens will pick up if you are checking body parts in the mirror and saying “God I’m fat”. Don’t compare your body with anyone else or allow your children/adolescent to do the same. These days, children are more likely than ever to compare themselves to celebrities or pop stars; make sure they understand the artifice that goes into celebrity. If your child or adolescent makes an unhealthy food choice, don’t make too much of a big deal. Wait until the right time to suggest what they could have done differently. People eat for reasons other than hunger, and children are no different. Kids may eat to combat stress, boredom or to comfort themselves when feeling anxious or sad. Talk to the kids about what is going on with them so that they will be less inclined to emotionally eat. Most importantly, remember, for the most part, you are in charge of your child’s eating and lifestyle. If you do not buy junk food; they will not eat it – at least when they are with you. If you don’t allow the television to be on all afternoon; they will not sit in front of it. If you present a healthy lifestyle as a fun and worthwhile option; chances are your child will accept it. There are plenty of resources available from your local health provider, or from the internet. Seek as much advice as possible to help you instill healthy lifestyle choices in your child. Compiled using infomation from www.chw.edu.au
Five tips to help you tackle the weighty issues 1. Don’t talk, Do Something In general, if your child is elementary age or younger and you’re concerned about his or her weight, don’t talk about it; just start making lifestyle changes as a family. The best thing you can do is make it easy for kids to eat smart and move often. Serve regular, balanced family meals and snacks. Turn off televisions, video games and computers. Look for ways to spend fun, active time together. 2. Don’t play the blame game Never yell, scream, bribe, threaten or punish children about weight, food or physical activity. If you turn these issues into parentchild battlegrounds, the results can be disastrous. Shame, blame and anger are setups for failure. The worse children feel about their weight, the more likely they are to overeat or develop an eating disorder. 3. a uniteD front As with any other important issue, make sure both parents and other important relatives are on the same page. Mixed messages about weight can have unhealthy consequences. Talk with Your Health-Care Provider: If a health professional mentions a concern about your child’s weight, speak with him or her privately. Discuss specific concerns about your child’s growth pattern, and ask for ideas on making positive changes in your family eating habits and activity levels. 4. Seek aDvice For kids and teenagers, check out local programs and professionals who specialise in youth. Look for a registered dietitian with a specialty in pediatric weight management. M a ny h os p i t a l s an d cl in ics h ave comprehensive programs with education and activities for both kids and adult family members. Some of these options may be covered by your health insurance plan. 5. focuS on the big picture The key is health, not weight. If your family starts eating better and moving more, your children may “grow into” their weight as their height increases. Compliment your children on lifestyle behaviors (“Great snack choice,” or “You really run fast”) rather than on the loss of a pound or two. Source: www.eatright.org

Ever wondered why the person next to you can eat chocolate all day and not put on weight, but you just have to look at a piece of mud cake and you’ll put on a kilo? It’s all down to metabolism.
get your
metabolism W
moving
e’ve all heard the word a million times, but what does it actually mean? Simply put, metabolism is the chemical reactions that occur in the body’s cells to convert the fuel from food into the energy we need to function. Everyone’s metabolism works at different rates; the higher your metabolic rate, the more food you can eat. So it pays to understand more about it. It is impossible to discuss metabolism, without discussing basal metabolic rate (BMR). BMR refers to the amount of energy or kilojoules the body needs to maintain basic functions. An average male might have a BMR of about 7100 kilojoules per day, meaning they can consume that amount of kilojoules before they begin to gain weight, while an average female might have a BMR of about 5900 kilojoules per day. Energy expenditure is continuous, but the rate varies throughout the day. The lowest rate of energy expenditure is generally agreed to be first thing in the early morning. Personal trainer Janelle Ware, with Synergy Training, says it is difficult for dieters to come to terms with, but eating more will in fact help speed up your metabolism. “You should never feel a hunger pain – it is a sign your metabolism is slowing down,” she said. “It’s a hard concept for many people trying to lose weight, but it is an important one to remember: starving yourself is not only unhealthy, it also doesn’t work. By eating super-clean, high protein foods several times a day, you will find that your metabolism goes into overdrive, becoming extremely efficient at burning calories.”
raised BMR.
If you want to lose or maintain weight, you need to keep a The key to this is increasing your lean muscle mass.
66 slim magazine WINTEr 2011
Find your BMR Knowing your BMR is important if you want to keep your weight in check. You need to know how many kilojoules you can eat a day to maintain your weight. Your BMR can be affected by a variety of factors, including hormonal problems and muscle mass. Work out your metric BMR using this equation:
655 + (9.6 x weight in kilograms) + (1.8 x height in centimetres) - (4.7 x age in years) 66 + (13.7 x weight in kilograms) + (5 x height in centimetres) - (6.8 x age in years) “The types of food you eat will alter your metabolism. Overeating slows it down, eating lean and green speeds it up.”
The types of food you eat will also alter your metabolism. For example, proteins raise your BMR by 30 per cent, carbohydrates raise it by six per cent, and fats just four per cent. “It is a common misconception that to lose weight or increase health and fitness, you need to eat less,” says Ware. “This isn’t the case. Sure, you need to eat less of certain foods such as those with a high fat or high sugar content, but as a rule, we should be eating five to six small meals a day – full of leafy greens and lean protein. Lean, green and clean. “Eating these smaller meals regularly will boost your metabolism, helping you to burn more calories all day long. “Frequent meals also helps promote muscle growth by regulating insulin levels and providing a steady flow of amino acids into the muscle cells.” And, says Ware, if you really want to speed up your metabolism, start lifting. “Weight training is a great way to increase your metabolic rate. To raise your BMR you want muscle mass, and weight training will give you that. It will also get your metabolism working faster for longer. So be sure you get a good balance of cardio and weight training.”

One of the biggest obstacles to any weight loss plan is getting around the many subtle and not so subtle ways that family and friends can sabotage your diet. But there are ways to ensure you stay strong and on track.
W
hile they may not even be aware that they are doing it, the tactics used by those closest to us have the potential to be the downfall of even our most well intentioned efforts to lose weight. In some cases, family and friends feel insecure regarding your plans to lose weight and thus may begin practicing various tactics that are aimed at derailing your diet plans. They may complain about the amount of time that you spend working out; deliberately schedule other activities that conflict with your scheduled exercise times; shower you with tempting and fattening foods and in the worst case scenarios make pointed observations that you don’t look as though you’ve lost weight or make predictions that you will just gain all the weight you’ve lost right back. Usually this type of tactic stems from the fact that the other person is suddenly afraid that your change in lifestyle may affect your relationship with them. This is especially true in relationships concerning husbands/ wives and other romantic partners. There may be a very real concern present that you will begin to notice others when you become slim. In other cases, the tactics employed from those closest to you may not result from insecurities but rather from lack of knowledge. They simply may not recognise that offering that one teensy slice of chocolate cake could set you back an entire week in your diet plans. Or perhaps they truly do not realize the health risks those extra pounds are presenting to you. 68 slim magazine WINTEr 2011
This type of behaviour from those closest to us can be disheartening when we are already feeling vulnerable. Fortunately, there are several tactics you can use to withstand even the worst tactics friends and family may throw your way in order to sabotage your diet. Never accuse friends/family of the obvious tactics they are using. Instead, explain how much it means to you to lose weight and become healthier. Try to turn this into a way to spend more time together and bond by asking them to be your weight loss buddy. Not only will this provide the back-up support you need, but it will help to eliminate the feelings of insecurity they are experiencing as you begin to reveal your new, slimmer body. When friends and family express judgmental feelings; the first thing you should do is realize that these statements are more about their own feelings of inadequacies. Try not to take it personally. Instead, focus on the fact that you are doing something healthy for yourself.
A C t
D
G m p i
Be sure to let those closest to you know the guidelines for your diet. In some cases, what appears to be sabotage could simply be the result of not having enough information. If you find that certain areas are especially weak points for you; clue your family and friends in so that they can help you to meet your weight loss goals. Don’t be afraid to toot your own horn. When you reach a milestone in your diet, let everyone know about and see how happy you are in your own success. Chances are that when family and friends see your enthusiasm and happiness, they will be much more likely to provide the support you need. Don’t become a born again dieter! While it’s great to try to introduce your family and friends to a healthier way of living and eating; it’s important to realise that no one wants to be lectured to. Toward that end, work together on family meal plans and get-togethers so that everyone is satisfied with the choices offered. Content kindly supplied by Joey Dweck of WeightLossBuddy.com

Let’s talk about
SEX We all know that excess weight can adversely affect our health, but what about our sex lives?
A
n article published in the British Medical Journal online says that many experts say that being overweight can lead to disappointing sexual experiences. The article says that in a new European study, researchers have found that obese women had more trouble finding a sexual partner than men of the same weight, while obese men didn’t have the same difficulties finding women who were attracted to them. But it isn’t all good news for the men; the study also found that obese men reported a high rate of erectile dysfunction. It is commonly accepted that obesity in men and women can lead to serious health problems such as diabetes, heart conditions, urinary problems, depression, incontinence, low self esteem, and social prejudices. Any of these health problems can contribute to sexual problems. These sexual problems can, in turn, lead to further depression and isolation, making it difficult for obese people to connect with others and form meaningful relationships. The article also cited further findings of the study that can lead to sexual problems such as muscular or skeletal problems, and flexibility issues. Discussing these issues with doctors can also be problematic for obese patients as there is a level of embarrassment on the part of both doctors and patients. The study found that obese women may be anxious to ask about birth control or even discuss sex at all. As a result, the study says that obese women have been said to be as much as four times more likely to have an unplanned pregnancy than thin women. The obese woman and her baby

will also be at a higher risk for complications during pregnancy and child birth. However, when weight is addressed, the sexual problems can be improved. A 1996 study of 94 obese patients who had subsequently lost weight found that 50 per cent of them enjoyed sex more after losing weight. And 78% of these patients’ partners reported enjoying sex more once their partner had lost weight. 44% of the patients and 40 percent of their partners noted improved orgasms after treatment for obesity. Only 27% of the patients felt they were attractive before surgery, while 80% felt more attractive afterward; 94% of their partners agreed. These findings are hardly surprising. Sexual health experts have long held that a strong self esteem and sense of self is essential to any healthy sexual relationship. It stands to reason that if a person does not feel they are sexually attractive, it will be difficult for them to establish and maintain healthy sexual relationships. A good start to correcting these problems is to address the issue of weight, and to ensure that if you are obese, you recognise the many positive qualities you possess, physically and otherwise. If you feel that your body image or weight is having an adverse effect on your sexual health, make an appointment to see your doctor or caregiver. Even if you feel some initial embarrassment, they will be able to offer valuable advice and help you seek out information which will help you establish and maintain satisfying sexual relationships.
GroundbreakinG study Men and women who are obese not only have poorer sexual health, but also reduced sexual activity, according to researchers from the London school of Hygiene and tropical Medicine and the national institute of Health and Medical research in Paris. the team collected data on the sexual behavior of more than 12,000 French men and women. among this group, 3,651 women and 2,725 men were of normal weight, while 1,010 women and 1,488 men were overweight and 411 women and 350 men were obese. excess pounds took a severe toll on sex lives but in different ways for men and women.
Compared with normal-weight women:
Obese women are 30 percent less likely to have had a sex partner in the past year. Obese women under 30 often don’t seek contraceptive advice or use any oral contraceptives and are four times more likely to have an unintended pregnancy. Obese women are less likely to visit a gynecologist. Gynecologists and general practitioners are less likely to prescribe contraception to obese women. Obese women are five times more likely to meet sex partners on the Internet and more likely to watch pornography. Obese women are less likely to view sex as important in their lives.
Compared with normal-weight men:
Obese men are 70 percent less likely to have had more than one sex partner in the past year. Obese men are 2.5 times more likely to experience erectile dysfunction. Obese men under 30 are more likely to have had a sexually transmitted disease. Even more than men, obesity affects the sex lives of women particularly hard. “Because of social pressure or social stigmatisation, obese women are less likely to engage in sexual intercourse and more likely to find sexual partners via the Internet,” researchers told HealthDay News. “Because of their obesity, they are not comfortable meeting men through friends, through work, through parties.” Obese women are more likely to be in a relationship with a partner who is also obese, which the study attributes to the stigmatisation of obese women and their low self-esteem.

More than anything else human beings consume, water is essential to good health and well being. We know we should drink more water, but do we know why?
the good N
o matter where you look today you will no doubt encounter someone carrying bottled water. Water has become the earmark of a healthy lifestyle – offering hydration and purification. It’s no wonder so many of us have heeded the advice of the experts and significantly upped our water intake. Drinking water for health makes sense when you understand the role that water plays in the human body. Over half of the human body is made up of water; for this reason, drinking water for health is absolutely crucial in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Experts have long recommended the drinking of at least six glasses of water each day in order for our systems to function at optimum levels. Water allows our body to effectively absorb the nutrients that we need from food and systematically flushes our kidneys of waste. In fact, all of our internal organs operate at higher capacity when we are well hydrated. When we are drinking water for health our blood thins as it should; when we are dehydrated, blood becomes thicker making our bodies work harder to pump it; this makes the overall functions of the body slow and inefficient.* Drinking water regularly allows our body to digest the food we eat. Without water our body cannot effectively eliminate waste. Water has an enormous effect on weight loss as well, speeding our metabolism and acting as a natural appetite suppressant. Drinking water for health throughout our lifetime means, in many cases, the long term successful maintenance of a healthy weight. Drinking water for health also means an outward glow and youthful appearance. Experts say drinking plenty of water can give us a clear complexion because the water flushes toxins from our bodies. The evidence is clear; in order to keep our bodies functioning at an optimum level drinking water for health is vitally important. Keep water with you at all times and drink throughout the day. You will find that your overall health – and appearance – is improved. *Source credit: EzineArticles.com; www.multipureco.com; www.water.org

Hard Water vs. Soft Water Soft water is water with the minerals removed through purification; hard water is water with the minerals left in. There are arguments for and against soft and hard water. According to an article in Good Housekeeping, nutritionists have determined that the amount of minerals in your tap water can make a significant difference to your health. The article cited a study in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association found that drinking “hard” water may actually reduce your risk of heart disease.
When we are dehydrated, blood becomes thicker making our bodies work harder to pump it
Water – the facts Water helps keep your muscles and skin toned, assists in weight loss, transports oxygen and nutrients to cells, eliminates toxins and wastes from the body, and regulates body temperature. Drinking clean water plays a major role in reducing the risk of certain diseases. Aside from helping digestion and absorption of food, water regulates body temperature, carries nutrients and oxygen to cells, and removes toxins and other wastes. Water cushions joints and protects tissues and organs, including the spinal cord, from shock and damage. Conversely, lack of water (dehydration) can be the cause of many ailments. Drinking more water helps to reduce water retention by stimulating the kidneys. Studies recommend that if you are overweight, you should add one glass of water to your daily requirement for every 10 kilos over your recommended weight.* At birth, water accounts for approximately 80 per cent of an infant’s body weight. While the daily recommended amount of water is eight cups per day, not all of this water must be consumed in the liquid form. Nearly every food or drink item provides some water to the body. Soft drinks, coffee, and tea, while made up almost entirely of water, also contain caffeine. Caffeine can act as a mild diuretic, preventing water from travelling to necessary locations in the body. By the time a person feels thirsty, his or her body has lost over 1 per cent of its total water amount.

or the most part, I wouldn’t describe myself as a car-loving person. I have two children so usually a car is just the thing I use to get everybody where they need to be, when they need to be there. But I have to admit I was pretty excited, when I went to Grand Motors Toyota to collect my new Toyota FJ Cruiser. OK, so technically it wasn’t mine; I was just test driving it for the weekend, but I couldn’t wait to get behind the wheel. The FJ Cruiser is the latest member of the LandCruiser family. The design pays homage to the LandCruiser FJ40, a vehicle long regarded as one of the dependable off road vehicles ever designed. The FJ40 LandCruiser became an icon among Toyota’s vehicles, with over 1.1 million produced between 1960 and 1984. The original FJ was a two-door, four-wheel-drive. While its exterior design has become iconic, the FJ was never a show pony; it was known as a serious vehicle, and used commercially in the construction and mining industries, on cattle farms, anywhere they needed tough, dependable and reliable vehicles. For the past thirty years, enthusiasm for the FJ has remained strong, and in the late 1990s Toyota in the United States took the first steps in the development of a new FJ. The result is the FJ Cruiser. The first thing you notice about the FJ is the design. Its FJ-inspired features include angular lines, round headlights set either side of a wide, mesh grille, an upright windscreen with three wiper blades, a white roof and wrap-around rear corner windows. Entry to the second row of seats is via rearopening access doors, so it retains the two-door appeal of the original. But this isn’t a reproduction. The FJ Cruiser is reminiscent of the original, with a totally modern twist. The FJ Cruiser is certainly modern - big and bold, but not garish or extreme. Somehow, this chunky, almost indestructible 4WD manages to be a sophisticated, classy vehicle. Over the course of the weekend, the FJ drew many a stare, and we even had people taking photos of it. The interior is unique with features such as the instrument panel with horizontal beams, the cluster of three dials on top of the dashboard, the body-coloured stamped faceplate with round instrumentation, and the attached-look door panels. Plus there’s loads of space. No piling bags on bags, or squashing gear behind seats; there is plenty of room for an active family – and all the ‘stuff’ that comes with them. In terms of the drive, the FJ is surprisingly easy to manage, despite it’s size and heritage. While the original was designed to be an off road vehicle, the new FJ Cruiser is a multi-tasker; equally at home in the city as it is off road. I didn’t feel as though I were driving and enormous vehicle; the drive was smooth and steady. Over the weekend one thought kept coming to my mind: “This is not you’re average car”. And it’s not. While it has an impressive pedigree, and is now part of a rich Toyota tradition, the FJ Cruiser is its own car; unique and contemporary. It was fantastic fun to get behind the wheel for a weekend; I was impressed with every aspect of the car. As I climbed out of the FJ, reluctantly preparing to hand back the keys, I have to admit I almost did a little “Oh what a feeling!” jump in the air. Go to www.grandmotors.com.au for more.

6 tips
for a
better life
Changing or improving your life is no easy task. It takes planning, dedication and commitment. Whether it is weight loss, improved relationships or career advancement, the key is to know what you want and dedicate yourself to achieving it. Here Daniel Better of Self Improvement For Success shares essential tools designed to help you live the life you want to live – in the way you want to live it.
The
Secret is Out!
It’s Slim Secrets delicious range of guilt free snack bars, cookies & chips.
1. expect to achieve
While many think that the majority of people who are successful in the world are smarter than they are, that simply is not the case. The real secret here is to expect to win before it has ever happened. I can’t stress enough how important this is. Your mindset has a hugely powerful effect on whether or not you will attain your dreams and goals.
2. keep a daily journal
You will be hard-pressed to find a successful person who doesn’t adopt a personal daily journal. We can’t keep track of everything that passes through our minds and this is when a journal comes in extremely handy. Whenever an idea strikes you as something you would like to do, accomplish or feel passionate about, get in the habit of writing it down. It will give you a sense of selfawareness and will skyrocket your confidence in yourself.
3. meditation
Available in selected supermarkets, health food stores, gyms and pharmacies.

Known to be a great stress reliever (not to mention the other health benefits like aiding in digestion and even slowing your heart rate) this is one of the most overlooked of the techniques even though it could be one of the most important. It drastically helps in avoiding worries and anxiety because it clears your mind of all the negative thoughts, useless thoughts that we all feel from time to time. Your sleep will be more restful and it will help you make the most of the other techniques shared here.
4. write action plans
The simple act of putting pen to paper has a dramatic effect on clarifying your goals and aids with the expectancy I talked about earlier. This habit of writing down goals is mandatory if you want to actually achieve those goals. Dreaming is one thing, doing is quite another. All of these written goals should lead you to your ultimate long term goal and perfect life.
5. daily affirmations
Getting in the habit of reading aloud positive affirmations each and every day will literally change your character, your personality and ultimately change the actions you take every day of your life. I have found that reading these out loud when I get up in the morning and before I go to bed at night to work very well. You can’t help but change your inner self by doing this religiously every day.
6. be well rounded
All areas of your life are affected by all other areas of your life. By that I mean, if you have bad relationships for example, your finances and even your health will suffer. Problems in your relationships, your health or finances will zap the necessary energy to make the most out of all of these areas of your life. Personal development and success will become much more difficult as a result. In order to accomplish great things, living a balanced life is so important, a life of great emotional fortitude, financial security and physical stamina.
