EDITOR IN CHIEF Elizabeth Austin

Winter. That wonderful season where we curl up, cuddle up and explore the great indoors. While I love everything about winter, I recently read that the average Australian will put on two to three kilos during winter. That, I don’t love. I used to fall into the weight-gain-over-winter trap, but I’ve learned my lesson (it took a few winters, I can tell you). For me, it just isn’t worth it; to pile on the kilos, only to have to lose them again in summer. So I go easy on the comfort food and make sure I keep up my exercise routine. Sure, I can’t get on my bike and ride to the beach as often, but I can still work the treadmill and of course, keep up my favourites, Bikram yoga classes and Hypoxi. This issue we introduce you to some fitness regimes you may not have tried: triathlons (page 52) and mountain biking (page 55). Experts say that one of the easiest ways to stay committed to your fitness goals is to keep things interesting, to try new things. Maybe one of these will suit. If sticking to a fitness routine is difficult for you, check out our expert advice on page 50. It may just be the motivation you need. I don’t know about you, but I love a good celebrity story. In this issue, on page 40, we have a great insight into the diets some of your favourite celebrities use to stay fit and fabulous. Some of them are seriously strange. We also have more recipes than ever, with some decadent sugar-free desserts, beautiful gluten-free dishes, and much, much more. And of course we have plenty of prizes for you to win. Don’t forget to check out our great subscription offer on page 43 for your chance to win a weekend at the divine QT Gold Coast. Stay warm and enjoy the issue,

Kate

DID YOU KNOW: Cleaning burns approximately 250 calories per hour

Love those lips As a baby, Graham’s Natural Alternatives creator Geoff Graham had one of the worst cases of eczema ever reported, and as a cruel fate, his son suffered this same condition. He felt he couldn’t find safe products that worked, so he created a range of skin, hair, body, beauty and children’s products. Made from pure 99% organic ingredients, the lip balm is vitamin enriched, 100% edible, gluten, lanolin, petrolatum and cruelty free, and contains no hydrogenated oils. Go to itchy.net.au

Shower Power instantly dissolves soap scum, calcium build-up and water stains in the bathroom. It can be used on all hard surfaces including taps, tiles, glass, toilets, stainless steel, showers or baths. Shower Power is made in Australia and available in most supermarkets such as Coles, Woolworths and independent stores such as IGA.

A little bit of this, a little bit of that.

SAFE AND SEXY TAN

Babe Scrubs

Fancy that soft and glowing feeling on your skin after showering? A new, all natural body scrub offers a range of health and beauty benefits, individually tailored to your needs. Babe Body Scrubs are designed to reduce the appearance of cellulite, scars, stretch marks, lumps and bumps. They can also remedy flaky skin, relieve eczema and psoriasis as well as leaving your skin tingling with health. There are three scrubs in the Babe range, each offering different benefits. Green Tea is a healing and anti-ageing scrub, which also protects against sun damage. The energising Coffee scrub, made from virgin ground coffee beans, assists in reducing cellulite and smoothing the skin’s appearance and feel. And what better way to round off a gym workout than with the Pink Salt scrub? Containing pure Himalayan salt which helps relax muscles, this scrub helps detoxify and polish your body, leaving the skin glowing and smooth. babescrub.com

Fancy a spray tan during winter that’s safe and chemical-free? The Eco Tan range is made from certified organic and natural products such as cacao and herb and flower extracts. It was developed three years ago by Sonya Driver, who searched for alternative methods of tanning after her sister was diagnosed with melanoma. Organic Invisible Tan moisturises the skin while tanning and because it is clear when applied to the skin there is no staining of clothes or bed linen ($34.95). Winter Skin is designed mainly for fair-skinned people. It builds slowly to a honey-coloured tan after a few applications and also acts as a spray tan extender. The ingredients are all organic, vegan and cruelty free ($29.95). Also available is an aluminium and paraben-free deodorant with natural coconut and an exfoliant glove which the makers say is Australia’s best tan removal glove. Eco Tan products are available at most leading pharmacies, health food stores and holistic beauty practitioners. ecotan.com.au

dream cream

While most skincare products remain on the skin’s surface, the creators of the BioElixia skincare range have spent 10 years developing a delivery system to enhance the absorption and penetration of vital ingredients further into the skin. Their Daily Skin Smoothing Lotion ($69.95) contains sunscreen to help protect from incidental sun exposure throughout the day and BioElixia’s Night Renew Complex ($69.95) has key anti-ageing ingredients that work while you sleep. The Night Renew Complex contains higher levels of key ingredients such as Retinol and Vitamin C to help boost skin repair as well as moisturising it while you’re asleep. Manufacturers say their anti-ageing skincare range will smooth fine lines and reduce wrinkles in four weeks. bioelixia.com

Sunscreen for scars

Did you know that more than 1200 Australians are treated for skin cancer each day and more than 2000 of us die from the disease every year? That’s why it’s so important to make sure we protect ourselves and our children when enjoying the great outdoors. For those who’ve already had procedures, like having a mole removed, the Cancer Council has developed Professional Sunscreen for Scars ($27.95). It’s also recommended for those who’ve had cosmetic procedures such as skin grafts and laser surgery and can be worn with or without make-up. The product is rich in zinc, which protects delicate scar tissue, while the addition of Vitamins B5 and B3 help it heal. cancer.org.au/shop

The Good Goo

The development of MooGoo’s miraculous anti-ageing face cream began with a happy accident. Its developer, former air force pilot Craig Jones, discovered that a cream used on dairy cows delicate udders was effective in helping with his mother’s psoriasis. Seven years down the track the product has been refined to a point where it’s now in demand throughout Australia, the UK and Asia. MooGoo Anti-Ageing Face Cream contains the antioxidant resveratrol, ascorbyl tetraisopalmitate (an oil-soluble form of Vitamin C) and EGCG, the antioxidant component of green tea, all of which target sun damage. Antioxidants neutralise chemicals called free radicals, which accelerate the ageing process and are also linked to heart and liver disease and cancer. While red wine and chocolate both contain antioxidants, along with healthy foods like fruit, vegetables and nuts, the topical application of a cream containing antioxidants has a much stronger positive effect on the complexion. The face cream retails for $34.90 for 75g. moogoo.com.au

Nature’s Way with Luke and Scott

Tiramisu Cake

Didn’t think five:am yoghurt could get any better? Try this divine Tiramisu cake! For more go to fiveam.com.au

Australian health and nutrition brand Nature’s Way have teamed with fitness professionals, Clean Living authors and nutritional cooks Luke Hines and Scott Gooding (those good looking guys from My Kitchen Rules) as ambassadors for their diverse range of premium Superfoods. SLIM Magazine spoke to the boys. Why have you decided to team with Nature’s Way, in particular the range of Superfoods? Luke: It was an absolute no brainier partnering with Nature’s Way on their Superfoods because they produce the highest quality range on the market, with the best research behind them and phenomenal quality that ends up on the shelf. It’s so easy to promote a range of Superfoods that you can trust, believe in, and importantly, use yourself in everyday life to make you healthier and happier. We have heard a lot in the media recently about Superfoods; what is a Superfood? Scott: It’s certainly a buzz word at the moment but basically I feel it’s a food source that offers a broad range of vitamins, minerals and trace elements over and above most foods. Spirulina for instance is the most nutrient rich food on the planet. What are three foods we should all eat more of ? Luke: Coconut Oil – this should be the new staple in every Australians pantry. It’s great for frying, baking and barbequing and also as a spread. Simply replace your other oils or bad fats with this and you will be looking and feeling great. Spirulina – this little guys packs a nutrient punch, that’s for sure! By adding a teaspoon of Nature’s Way Spirulina to your smoothie or salad, you are adding 100 phyto-nutrients, more than any other plant. Cacao – it’s organic chocolate!! A powerful Superfood that is super high in antioxidants, and also extremely versatile in both sweet and savoury cooking! What are foods we should eat less of or avoid altogether? Scott: Sugar is definitely high on the list – it a sucker because it’s in practically everything processed but it’s the cause for obesity, heart disease, diabetes and a heap of other health problems. For more go to naturesway.com.au/superfoods

Snack facts

Almost two-thirds of Australian office workers gain an average of 3.3 kilograms a year according to new research from Wonderful Pistachios. And a big factor in that is snacking! Kara Landau, Australian Accredited Practising Dietitian and author of the Clean Separation said, “Snacking in itself isn’t bad, but it’s all about the choices we make. Wise snacks can be part of a balanced diet and whether it’s at the office or out and about, it’s helpful to plan ahead and have wise snack choices at hand – like a handful of nuts.” For people looking for a wise snack at work, Wonderful Pistachios unsalted flavour is a go-to option. Five minutes with… Kate & Anthony Gollé

Anthony and Kate Gollé, owners of the holistic wellness centres Body Brilliant, are reaching out to a wider audience through their film, Overfed and Undernourished and new book Raising Healthy Families in Unhealthy Times. SLIM spoke to the dynamic duo about their passion and drive to improve the wellbeing of Aussie families and the planet at large. The film, Overfed and Undernourished, looks very moving and compelling. Tell us how that came to be. Anthony: My brother called me up needing help. He was arthritic, had put on a few too many kilos and was finding it tough balancing his health and raising his four kids after their mum had passed away. We decided it best he live with us for a couple of weeks while we detoxed him and helped get his mind focused again. He lost a stack of weight and looked and felt a million bucks after 10 days. When he was about to go home to his kids, he pulled me aside voicing his concern about his youngest son Liam, who was having some health challenges himself, weighing over 80 kilos at 11 years old. So Liam moved in with us for three months. Our mission is to transform the health of the planet, so we saw this as an opportunity to highlight how one boy’s journey, following some simple solutions, could inspire the world and impact the global health epidemic.

Liam’s story and the recommendations of some of the world’s leading experts who are interviewed in the movie. They are reconnecting as a family, making better choices about what they put in their mouths and their kids mouths, planting veggie gardens and demanding change to their schools and sporting clubs about what is being made available to eat. We have launched a free “reconnect challenge” that people can follow to create 10 daily rituals that we had Liam follow to transform their own lives at reconnectchallenge.com Where can people see the film? Kate: We have many options on the website overfedandundernourishedmovie.com where people can rent, download or purchase it for themselves, or there are all the locations that it will be premiering around the world, as well as hosting options where community groups, clubs and schools can screen it. Your book title is Raising Healthy Families in Unhealthy Times. Why do you think these are such unhealthy times? Kate: The statistics speak for themselves. We are the sickest generation to have lived and the numbers are getting worse with each generation. Our modern day lifestyles are fast paced, based on convenience and we are not educating children and families what they are putting in them that is killing them. My book is a guide for conscious parents to help them create healthy habits in their family from day one, encouraging them to trust their intuition, to approach their health naturally and create balance in their family life.

Who do you think should see this film and what do you hope they take away from it? Kate: Everyone of course! The feedback has been incredible, the changes people are making immediately after watching

weightloss solutions australia

Warren Artz

A

ccording to the experts, when it comes to losing weight and making healthier lifestyle choices, the training needs to start in your mind. SLIM spoke to WeightLoss Solutions Australia’s psychologist Warren Artz and dietitian Taryn Swift about the concept of mindfulness: what is it, and how do you apply it to achieve your health and fitness goals.

Taryn Swift Every week, hundreds of people undergo weight loss surgery in clinics throughout Australia. A variety of procedures are performed, but they all share a common goal: to help one feel satisfied with less food. The human appetite is a powerful force, at times we feel genuine hunger, but more often our appetite is subtle and persistent, lurking in the background, guiding our behaviour in more ways than we realise. Regulated by a highly complex system of communication between our gut, fat cells and brain, this inbuilt regulation system is why so many people find it difficult to maintain weight loss. Many people who come to WLSA for surgery have amazing will power. Almost all our patients have lost large amounts of weight, maybe 20 or 40kg a few times in their life, before they make the decision to have weight loss surgery. The methods have ranged from the sensible to the bizarre, but sadly, the outcome has been the same, weight regain. The goal of weight loss surgery is not only to reduce the amount of food people can eat, but to allow them to feel satisfied with less, and this is why it works more effectively than regular diets. It is now well established that surgery is the most effective treatment for obesity. Research is underway to further understand exactly how the different procedures have such a profound effect on a person’s appetite and sense of satiety. We know just by sitting around the top of the stomach a gastric band can reduce a person’s desire for food, and following sleeve gastrectomy people spend less time thinking about food. But even with surgery, the body tries to adapt and find ways of encouraging a person to consume more calories. Most people do not lose 100% of their excess weight after surgery, they tend to reach a point where their weight loss stabilises, and with time some people will regain a small amount of their overall weight loss. After talking to many people in the years following their weight loss surgery, some common themes emerge about the eating habits of those who maintain their weight loss, and those who regain. For example, there can be a tendency for people to err towards foods which are too easy to eat such as (ice cream, cheese, protein shakes, chips, biscuits, crackers) these foods don’t require much chewing, and it’s easy to consume a lot of them. On the other hand, those with the best long term outcomes tend to eat a small amount of regular texture foods such as vegetables, fruits, meats, and whole grains like oats or brown rice, foods that take longer to eat, with more chewing required. Whether someone has lost weight with or without surgery, it pays to be mindful of the early signs that the body is trying to get back its lost fuel storage. Look out for portion sizes creeping up, having a few extra treats in the week, having the second or third glass of wine instead of stopping at one. Our appetite once protected us against famine, but now with food so widely available we need to remain aware of how easy it is to consume more than we need, and take conscious steps to prevent overeating.

The weight loss industry is one of those jam packed with programs, diets, and ideas to help people lose weight. In fact, it’s a multi-million dollar industry that thrives on the recycling of old material in the form of a new low-fat cook book (with some minor improvements and an endorsing well known face on the cover), or the creation of a new diet that works for one person but fails thousands of others, or the reinvention of an old concept that’s found a vehicle for a trendy following. The campaigns are everywhere; and, unfortunately, it’s the campaigns that are winning not the people buying into them. Let’s get one thing straight: just because a celebrity endorses a diet, a low-fat cook book, or an exercise program, because (they say) it worked for them, doesn’t mean it will work for you. There are so many variables to consider that it would be unwise to expect the same results as ‘she who makes over a million dollars a year, has a personal trainer, personal shopper, more time than the clock has to offer, and the opportunity to go into hiding for 12 months when the weight starts stacking back on’. The weight loss industry promises a lot, but delivers very little; and, much like a politician, it’s up for re-election-and often gets re-elected – every time. The most overlooked aspect of weight loss is behaviour, and, the weight loss industry is partly to blame. With promises of such wonderful results, the focus rests with the outcome and not the process. So, in the end, we learn not how to change our behaviours but how to fail. Much of what we’ve lost today in understanding our behaviours can be found in theories and concepts that have philosophical underpinnings. Take for example the art of practising mindfulness, which is an ancient Buddhist philosophy and, currently, a rather trendy concept that delivers far more than it actually promises (because it doesn’t promise anything) provided you understand where and how to apply it. In short, mindfulness works best when you apply it to all aspects of your life. Why? Because it is a way of life, not a short course elective subject to satisfy your university credits. Mindfulness is about utilising all our senses to experience moments of our daily life; and, such moments are most valuable to our being when we are able to apply maximum attention to these experiences. The words ‘you only have moments to live’ by Jon Kabat-Zinn exemplifies this process; for, such opportunities are lost when our minds are elsewhere, perhaps pre-occupied with events of the past or the uncertainty of what hasn’t yet happened and may not ever happen. The world of mindfulness is too great to cover in this short article; however, with respect to its application to eating habits and weight loss, I can at least touch on some of its principles. As a psychologist I value sustainable behavioural change, so I see great value in something like mindfulness, particularly since it is such a wonderful skill to possess in all areas of our life not just eating. Mindfulness suggests that when we taste more we often eat less; so, the art of savouring is essential to this process. On the flip side, when we taste less we eat more. Think of times when you’ve perhaps eaten something quickly or that you didn’t necessarily enjoy, but ate it anyway, only to go searching through the pantry for something higher in satiety immediately after. This explains why it’s so important to enjoy what you eat, in smaller amounts and in moderation, and perhaps why diets – an often depriving process – don’t work. Because mindfulness can be applied to so many areas of our life, it’s no surprise that it’s become a hot topic in the area of weight loss. After all, it’s a behavioural concept with cognitive benefits. So, the big question is: Can applying mindfulness principles to eating habits help someone lose weight. Well, on a positive note, it’s a valuable and sustainable trait, particularly if it helps you taste more and eat less. After all, portion control is the most effective form of weight loss (think gastric band and gastric sleeve). The question you have to ask yourself is: ‘Do you have anything to lose if it only stopped you gaining more weight, and taught you how to enjoy life more, enjoy your food more, and be a genuinely happier person?’ For more information go to wlsa.com.au slim-magazine.com.au 27

Lost 48kg in eight months!

A chance conversation led to a life-changing decision for Stephen Scott.

I

t’s hard to believe that the healthy, happy and vibrant Stephen Scott of today was once obese, depressed, pre-diabetic, suffering from sleep apnoea, and staring down the barrel of a potential heart attack. But that’s just how he describes his life, prior to what he calls his “life changing” gastric sleeve surgery with WeightLoss Solutions Australia (WLSA). Stephen, a building contractor, says although his father’s death from a heart attack at just 47 and a history of heart and health problems in his family weighed heavily on his mind, it wasn’t enough to prompt a lifestyle change. Instead, he became more entrenched in bad habits of drinking too much, eating the wrong foods and spending most of his time “hiding away from the world, feeling sorry for myself and eating”. A chance conversation with his cabinet maker would prove to be the catalyst that changed his life forever. “He (the cabinet maker) just looked at me one day and said ‘mate, you have got to do something about your weight’,” Stephen says. “And I told him I knew I did, but I just couldn’t get a grip on it. I’d try really hard; I’d go to the gym all week and eat salads, and do all the right things, but then on the weekends, I’d slip back into bad habits. I’d stay out drinking, and my meals consisted of kebabs at 2am. In 12 months I’d only lost six kilos, and I was starting to think I’d never lose the weight. “My cabinet maker told me about a mate we’d gone to school with who’d lost 65 kilos through gastric sleeve surgery, so I started looking into it. Within two weeks I reckon I knew everything there was to know about it, and after I went along to one of WLSA’s information nights I just said ‘where do I sign up?’.” Stephen says while it was a big decision to make, he found the pre-operative support from WLSA helped him prepare for such a major surgery and subsequent lifestyle change. “There’s always someone to talk to at WLSA,” he says. “It’s funny because I did find the psychologist and the dietitian really helpful, but it was the support staff – the patient relationship officer, the nurse, 28 slim magazine winter 2014

the receptionist – who also really helped me. They were happy to answer any questions I had and they were so encouraging. I’ll always be really grateful to them for that, because it really helped me prepare.” After the operation, where the size of Stephen’s stomach was surgically reduced to limit food intake, he says he adjusted to his new life right away. “It’s just all about portion control,” he says. “And that’s what I could never get control of before the surgery. Back then, even when I was eating the right foods, I’d just eat way too much. Now that’s impossible. I physically cannot overeat.” He says the support he received from WLSA after the surgery was the key to his success. “I can’t imagine just going and having the surgery without the support they offer at WLSA,” he says. “I have a psychologist and a dietitian who I can call anytime, and I have the support of the whole team. They are all there to help you succeed and it’s been great to know they are there, helping me with whatever I need. I can’t speak highly enough of them. I put my life in their hands, and they didn’t let me down.” Since the operation Stephen has lost almost 50 kilos and the change it has had on him has been profound. “It has literally turned my life around,” he says. “I used to drag myself out of bed, spend the day at work tired and grumpy, then I’d come home and feel sorry for myself and just eat. I’d go to bed uncomfortable, and couldn’t sleep properly, so the next day the cycle would start all over again. “Since the surgery, I bound out of bed and go to the gym, then I go to work and I’m fit and healthy so I can be on the tools most of the day, and when I finish work I’m like ‘Ok. What are we doing? Where are we going?’. I’m just into it, like I never imagined I would be. “Instead of sitting watching everyone else have a swim or something, too ashamed to take my shirt off or get into my boardies, I’m now the first one in there. I bought myself a jet ski, and I have a vintage motorcycle that I’m restoring. “Family is really important to me – it’s everything really – and I plan to spend a lot of time travelling to Adelaide to see my gorgeous three-year-old niece and just goofing off and having fun with her. The whole thing has also given me the confidence to leave my job of 16 years and start up my own construction company, Stephen Scott Constructions. “Life is just fantastic. Because my dad died at 47, I always thought my life sort of had an expiration date; I used to just think ‘oh well, I’ll be dead by 50 too’. Now I feel like I could live to be 100, and I just want to get out there and live every single moment.” For more information go to wlsa.com.au

A new

beginning For Juanita Fritz, gastric banding surgery opened the door to the life she’d always dreamed off.

A

visit to her doctor’s surgery brought home some hard truths for Juanita Fritz, proving to be the motivation for her decision to undergo gastric banding surgery, and change her life. “I went to my doctors and had a family history check,” she tells Felicity Cohen, CEO of WeightLoss Solutions Australia (WLSA) in an exclusive interview (scan the QR code on this page to see the interview in full). “In my family history there was diabetes and heart problems, but the really scary part was the sleep apnoea. I found out I was stopping breathing 80 times a night. That was a really scary moment for me.” While the sleep apnoea was the most frightening consequence of her obesity, Juanita’s entire life was affected by it. She tells Felicity about the many seemingly small things other people might take for granted, that she simply couldn’t do. “It was too hard to keep up with my kids,” she says. “Running around with them I would run out of breath. Even going on holidays was hard. Going on rides and things like that was difficult. And flying; I was frightened I would get so big I wouldn’t be able to fit in the plane seat.” While the time honoured simple weight loss solution of eating less and exercising more might seem the obvious fix, as Juanita tells Felicity, when you have reached a certain level of obesity, it just isn’t that simple. “It’s a vicious cycle,” Juanita says. “I wanted to exercise, but my knees would hurt. And it was this catch 22 situation: you need to exercise because you’re overweight, but because you’re overweight, your knees hurt and it’s hard to exercise.” Looking back, Juanita says she can’t point to any one factor that caused her to become overweight. “It was a combination of things,” she explains. “Growing up I was told to eat everything on my plate, and it was a big plate. I also have European in-laws, so you finish one plate and they push another one on you. You don’t want to be rude so you just eat.” Whatever the causes, Juanita knew something had to change. Ironically, it was magazine articles such as this one that helped give her the confidence to know she could achieve her goal. “I was reading a lot of women’s health magazines, and there were a lot of women who had lost weight. I would see the before and after photos and I thought to myself, well that (the before photo) looks like me now, and in her after photo, she looks amazing. I think I can do that. I didn’t want to end up having a heart attack at 50 or ending up on insulin, so I decided to go to WLSA. On my second visit I decided to have the gastric banding surgery.” Juanita says the support she received from the team at WLSA made the whole process as easy and stress-free as possible. “The team

30 slim magazine winter 2014

were great,” she says. “Very supportive, lots of information. I found it very easy. Without everybody at WeightLoss Solutions Australia I wouldn’t have done it. I just needed that support.” Since the surgery, life has changed dramatically for Juanita. “It has changed my approach to food,” she says. “I have a much healthy diet now. My sleep apnoea improved within six months, and since losing the weight, now I can exercise without any pain in my knees or my back. I really enjoy it. I train five days a week, I do boxing, I do stand-up paddle boarding.” Juanita says she sometimes has to remind herself she is no longer overweight. “I sometimes still go for the larger sizes when I go shopping, and I have to remind myself that I actually wear a smaller size now. It’s great because there seems to be a lot more trendy clothes available for the size I am now. It’s nice to pick up a pair of size 8 jeans and they fit perfectly.” The self-confidence Juanita has gained as a result of the surgery has led her to set a goal that just a few years ago she would never have dreamed possible. “Now I’ve lost the weight and I’m toning up, I feel really good about myself. Next year I plan to enter myself in a bikini body sculpting competition. It will be a lot of work but I know I can do it.” For more information go to wlsa.com.au

weightloss solutions australia

“We have a range of solutions based on lifestyle, diet history and behaviour, and a host of other criteria that may impact the choice of procedure.”

With Felicity Cohen, CEO, WeightLoss Solutions Australia

the changing face of

bariatric surgery A

round 14 years ago when I first started to work in the field of bariatric surgery; there was only one solution to offer patients seeking a permanent weight loss procedure that would allow them to control and manage their weight for the long term. In 2000 it was the LapBand®. It really was the only device that provided patients who had tried every other weight loss option on the planet, an opportunity to finally succeed with sustained weight loss and to stop the never ending cycle of failure. The band is still one of the favoured bariatric interventions. It provides control where once there may not have been any. It is adjustable and reversible and these features make it still one of the safest, effective solutions for patients. Like any bariatric procedure, it requires maintenance and the support of a very dedicated allied health team (one of the key features that WeightLoss Solutions Australia (WLSA) prides itself on). When you buy a car, you service and change the tyres; it’s the same with a band! It needs adjusting and fine tuning. Now 14 years later with the fast pace of technological advancement we have so many more options. We are no longer a one size fits all solution. Patients are assessed according to a range of criteria and best procedure for each patient is carefully reviewed following assessment. Now; we are lucky enough to have a range of solutions to offer each individual based on lifestyle; diet history and behaviour; geographical location and commitment to follow-up; and a whole host of other criteria that may impact the choice of procedure. Now we have the Orbera balloon which is non-surgical and is perfect for people who just can’t get the 10-15 kilos off that they wish they could. They don’t need surgery but the need the help of a device combined with a lifestyle modification program that works. We have the lap band and then we have the increasingly popular sleeve gastrectomy. This is a permanent surgical procedure that involves removing two thirds of the stomach. Patients report significant improvement in their medical conditions at just six weeks post surgery; such as reduced Type-2 diabetes medication; no more anti-depressants and generally they are starting to see lifestyle improvements emerge that they could only ever have dreamed of 32 slim magazine winter 2014

previously. 99% of people say to me “I wish I had done this before” when it comes to recognising the results post surgery (this is the case with any procedure). We also perform mini-bypass and bypass. With new clinical trials and device technology always improving I can’t wait to see what we will be offering in the next five-10 years. WLSA is fortunate to be able to offer the best available procedures and that will remain my promise to always offer the best procedure for each individual. Our Facebook friends are generous in sharing their experiences on the WLSA page, and recently the question was posed “What have you lost or gained since surgery? Can’t be weight or clothes sizes.” This is WLSA client Tracey Doherty’s wonderful and insightful response. “I have gained confidence, health, energy and libido. I have lost my laziness for the most part, will walk the block to buy something rather then drive from one side to the other. I can walk up hills in high heels. I can run with my kids. I have lost my tolerance to lactose, gained a more positive view of food and life in general. I have gained more respect and admiration from those who truly love me for the commitment I have made to make myself healthier. I have lost respect for those who haven’t or don’t support me in my efforts.” “I think it’s important to shift focus from the numbers, weight, clothes size and even calories. It can get frustrating always comparing statistics and numbers. This has taken me a long time to learn. I try and focus on what I have gained rather than lost if that makes sense, because what do you do when you finishing losing, what do you have to focus on then?” I am personally grateful to be able to share the journey and observe the wonderful changes that so many people experience as they finally shed the weight they had always wanted to. The health outcomes combined with the quality of life outcomes are incredible. It is difficult to describe just how much satisfaction this brings to my life every day. I would not choose another career for all the tea in China! What could be better than seeing the results that are life changing for people daily through surgery and team commitment? strong body,

strong mind What is emotional resilience?

36 slim magazine winter 2014

E

motional resilience is an essential skill for maintaining good mental health. It is the essence of feeling in control of our thoughts, which in turn affects our emotions and behaviours. It is directly related to our selfworth or self-esteem. Self-esteem and emotional resilience allow you the psychological strength to work through setbacks and challenging situations in a capable and effective manner. Strong emotional resilience empowers you to develop even more positive coping behaviours; to persist and try again in the face of failure; to bounce back with confidence, and develop an even healthier self-esteem and sense of self.

Turn and face the change

On a daily basis we are faced with change. Some scenarios require small changes (such as the car space you usually use isn’t free so you have to park somewhere else), while other changes are larger and more daunting (such as losing your job). Bigger change requires more mental strength to overcome as it requires more complex problem solving skills and, you guessed it, emotional resilience. Whether it is difficulties at work or dealing with changes within intimate or family relationships, there are seemingly endless situations where we are required to cope with change. Change is omnipresent and here to stay in our fast paced lives. Therefore, the ability to manage change is essential (and, interestingly, directly proportionate to the ability to be emotionally resilient).

It ain’t all roses

As much as we try to protect ourselves from negative change, experiencing something bad in our lives and subsequently experiencing depression, anxiety and stress – at some level – is inevitable. We need to be emotionally resilient so we can continue to move forward in our lives, live out experiences and learn the most effective coping strategies. At different times there will be a need for us to take a different approach and use a varied mental strategy to manage; meaning we have to know which is the right tool to reach for in our “cranium tool box”.

commonly used psychological approaches to dealing with distress or anxiety

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT). Thought disputation. Asking yourself: how logical, reasonable, purposeful and effective is the thought? Then, if the thought is not effective, adopting a thought which is healthier. Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT). Sitting with the feeling. Sensing and feeling all the thought can provide. Acting as a silent witness to the thought and not trying to change it (the idea is that there are a multitude of thoughts we experience and a thought will soon be superceded by another). Narrative Therapy. With this approach the user quite simply changes their story about something (an event, occurrence, etc). With the change of story there will be a change in the words used to describe it and subsequently there will be a change in the emotional reaction. This approach has links to Neuro-linguistic Therapy, which looks at word semantics as the driving force in our thoughts.

I can see clearly now

Using these psychological ‘tools’ we realise that the mind is malleable; that with persistence and the consistent practice of rerouting the brain’s pathways, our brains can actually change and be stronger in sending more positive messages, changing our perception of the world in which we live. The single most important premise which runs as a theme through every style of intervention or psychological ‘tool’ is this: perception creates reality. Changing the way that you look at life will lead to a different thought process and emotional reaction. As the most highly evolved of the species (although some might argue with that) we have a huge capacity for higher order thinking, a sophistication that allows us to reason with the world in which we live.

Body and soul management

To take full advantage of our mind’s potential, we must learn to nourish the mind though the body and soul. For the body, this means combining a diet which is high in alkalinity (think lots of leafy greens) with lots of movement (interval training and strength stretch work). For the soul you need to acknowledge there is a higher power (whatever or whoever that might mean to you) and take time to nourish the special relationship you have with the universe though meditation and connecting with the simple pleasures of life (such as soothing relaxation and stimulating relationships). Together with these techniques of body and soul management, the ‘Triad of Triumph’ is completed by strengthening the mind. The foundations of strong mind management clearly begin with the care of body and the soul and the ritual of using mind ‘tools’ will lead to a stronger mind to complement a stronger body. Life is all about the choices we make, and the choice is entirely yours, so make a strong mind and body yours – beginning today.

Three ways to a stronger mind body relationship

Spend Money Buy the best you can possibly afford on nurturing your body. You will be motivated to do more for yourself when you have the best; the best psychologist, designer exercise clothing, luxury gym membership, organic food etc. I guarantee you will want to use whatever you have spent good money on. A purchase that is good for you will be less likely to sit in the back of the cupboard or back of the fridge when you have made a financial commitment. Verbalise Your Commitment When the opportunity presents, inform people that you are creating a stronger mind and body. This will further solidify your commitment to your cause by virtue of accountability to your support network. Make Time Consistency and repetition of what you are creating will lead you closer to the success of a strong mind and body. Leave your running shoes beside your bed so you can slip into them the moment your feet touch the floor in the morning. Schedule the psychotherapy session without the ability to override the appointment; treat the appointment as you would the most important hour of your week.

THE MIGHTY

MEL B Fitter and more fabulous than ever, Mel B is taking on the world

M

elanie Brown has never been what you would call shy. Her ballsy and determined approach to life has seen her achieve a vast and ever-expanding list of accomplishments. Best known as Mel B or “Scary Spice” of the Spice Girls, she can also add author, television personality, stage star, philanthropist, entrepreneur and mum to her list of credits. In recent years she has also been a champion for weight-loss through her role as ambassador for Jenny Craig. She says getting back her ‘Spice Girl bod’ is testament that with Jenny’s helping hand, being a yummy mummy is possible for any woman who wants to lose her baby weight. “My body is not only back to the shape it used to be, I actually feel better than before because I know I have earned it; it’s not something I just woke up to and BAM – there it was,” Mel says. “I’ve been pregnant and exhausted with my work and had next to no sleep looking after my gorgeous baby, but Jenny has allowed me to look after myself. “Being my third pregnancy and in my 30s it was much easier to gain weight this time round. I was not looking forward to the chore of losing the weight at all. Jenny has not only been a helping hand, it’s been my saviour,” Mel says. Mel says it was Jenny’s unique support system, with her individual coach and tailored eating plans, that really made the difference. Mel experienced the same program that everyday clients go through. “The weekly check-ins with my consultant kept me on track; we became ‘besties’! And the food was delicious; you get to eat fish and chips, chicken fettuccine and chicken parmigiana! “Thanks to Jenny, I can easily slide into my old jeans – the ones my daughter Pheonix has been ‘borrowing’ for the past 15 months. My husband Stephen is beyond excited, he’s loving my new body and has showered me with sexy lingerie. Girls, if you’ve got it, flaunt it to the man you love – don’t lose the fun – lose the weight!” “I carried a lot of weight when I was pregnant – I was eating for England. Carrying this extra weight was draining on my energy levels. I didn’t want to work out at all when I was pregnant, I felt sick in the beginning then I just gained too much weight to even want to work out. “Now I’ve lost the weight, I feel like I can take on the world. My energy levels have skyrocketed and my brain is firing on all cylinders. I feel I can now be the best mum possible.” Jemma O’Hanlon, Jenny Craig Nutrition and Program Development Manager, says a lot of women face this kind of pressure. “Getting back to pre-baby weight is not a race. It’s something a lot of mums want to do, but the main priority is your baby and having the energy to take care of your baby,” she says. “The Jenny program is based on steady weight loss over time so that it can be maintained. Having the nutritionally balanced meals

pre-prepared for you makes life a little easier, and reminding ourselves about portion control is an important one. As is ensuring we take care of ourselves – little things such as eating breakfast rather than skipping a meal, eating regular snacks to keep the metabolism going, and going for a walk, with or without the pusher, to get the heart rate going and the endorphins racing. It’s the little things you do every day that make the difference. “Mel is a wonderful ambassador for Jenny Craig. She lost the weight, learnt the lessons with her consultant and continues to live her life in a positive way.” While Mel says she believes it is important to focus on your own wellbeing, she is also very focused on the needs of others. Using her prominence to further benefit various charities and causes, Mel is an ardent supporter of GLAAD (a gay advocacy group) and has appeared in the NOH8 (meaning ‘no hate’) campaign, a charitable organisation whose mission is to promote marriage, gender and human equality through education, advocacy, social media and visual protest. She also helped raise $250,000 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation’s Pose for the Cure breast cancer campaign, has designed her own shoe line for charity with ShoeDazzle and teamed with Will.I.Am for Oxfam’s In My Name campaign that fights world poverty. Along the way, she has written a best-selling autobiography Catch a Fire, has appeared as a guest judge on both Australia’s Got Talent and America’s Got Talent, and starred in the wildly popular British soap Burn It on the BBC. Mel’s film roles have included Telling Lies (2008), Seat Filler (2004), LD 50” (2003) and the inspiring documentary Mel B: Voodoo Princess (2002) shot in Benin, off the tip of Africa. Mel B’s career has been based on inspiring people to leave behind their inhibitions and tackle anything and everything that comes their way. “It’s all about feeling confident, listening to yourself, trusting yourself and being in your own power. And that’s what I’m all about.”

“My body is not only back to the shape it used to be, I actually feel better than before because I know I have earned it; it’s not something I just woke up to and BAM – there it was.”

celebrity diets

arvzdix / Shutterstock.com

They’re rich, famous and fabulous. But being red carpet ready is no easy feat. From kooky to downright crazy, here are our favourite celebrity diets.

40 slim magazine winter 2014

#1 Vegetarian / Vegan What is it? This one is pretty simple: cut out the meat. The more extreme veganism also forbids animal by-products such as eggs and dairy. While non-believers worry about vegetarians not getting enough protein, there are many studies which show a diet without meat is the healthiest option for human beings. Looking at Beyonce’s smoking hot figure, that she attributes to her vegan lifestyle, it’s hard to argue. Celebrity followers: Beyonce, Madonna and Alicia Silverstone. Find out more at: veg-soc.org

#2 The Maple Syrup Diet

What is it? The Maple Syrup Diet was created by US naturopath Stanley Burroughs. This hard-core weight-loss strategy involves drinking a mixture of water, maple syrup, lemon juice and cayenne pepper for 10 days. Oh, and no food is allowed. The formula was reinvented three years ago as the Lemon Detox Diet; the only difference being that the maple syrup was replaced with Madal Bal syrup, made using sap from palms. Celebrity followers: Beyonce famously tried this one, but later dropped it for a meat-free lifestyle. Mariah Carey is also reportedly a fan. Find out more at: lemondetox.com.au

#3 The Alkaline Diet What is it? Focused on balancing the body’s pH content, Eating the Alkaline Way is a cookbook and lifestyle guide written by organic gourmet vegetarian cook Natasha Corrett (Sienna Miller’s step-sister) and nutritional therapist Vicki Edgson. Based on a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, that curtails consumption of acid-forming foods like dairy, pasta, meat and fish, the goal is to keep the body’s pH balance between 7.35 and 7.45. Celebrity followers: The most famous follower is Victoria Beckham, who tweeted a picture of the cookbook with the caption “Love this healthy eating cook book!” Other followers supposedly include Robbie Williams, Jennifer Aniston, Kirsten Dunst and Gwyneth Paltrow. Find out more at: honestlyhealthyfood.com

#4 The M-Plan Diet What is it? The ‘M-Plan’ promises to help women lose weight from their tums, bums, thighs and upper arms, but still keep their bust intact. It’s a 14-day program where you replace one meal a day with mushrooms, or a mushroom based meal. Does this mean spot reduction of fat is really possible? Lucy Wyndham, a fitness and nutrition expert, says not. “While there is no denying that mushrooms are a powerhouse of nutritional benefits and one of their greatest assets is that they are super low GI,” she says, “it’s untrue that mushrooms have the power to lose fat from everywhere except the bust.” Celebrity followers: Both Katy Perry and Kelly Osbourne are reportedly fans. Find out more about the health benefits of mushrooms at: powerofmushrooms.com.au

#5 Dr Joshi’s Holistic Detox Diet

What is it? The 21-day detox is designed to flush out toxins. Dieters are advised to avoid red meat, dairy, most fruit, wheat, gluten and yeast, alcohol, nuts, potatoes, spreads, coffee and non-herbal tea, sugar, chocolate and sweets, and artificially produced flavourings. That doesn’t leave a whole lot to chew (which you have to do 12 times before swallowing). Celebrity followers: Gwyneth Paltrow, Cate Blanchett and Kate Moss. Find out more at: joshiclinic.co.uk

#6 The Hampton’s Diet

What is it? This is a blend of two very popular diets, the famous Atkins Diet and the Mediterranean Diet. In The Hampton’s Diet, processed foods and carbs are out and Omega-3 fatty acids, fish, vegetables, lean meats, nuts, whole grains, and low-sugar fruits are in. Dieters are also told to consume fats in monounsaturated form (such as macadamia nut oil). Celebrity followers: Jennifer Aniston supposedly used this diet to get her smoking hot, post-Brad body. Sarah Jessica Parker and Renée Zellweger are also allegedly fans. Find out more at: drpescatore.com

#7 The Blood Type Diet What is it? Who doesn’t love science? The Blood Type Diet was invented by Dr Peter D’Adamo who believes our diets have adapted to suit our blood types. According to the doc, if you are blood type O you should do lots of exercise and eat plenty of red meat. People with blood type A should cut down on meats and go vegetarian. Type Bs can supposedly eat anything in moderation, while type ABs should avoid red meat but enjoy pineapple, soy and greens. Dr D’Adamo has taken his original blood-type research a step further in The Gene Diet, saying our genes dictate which foods will make us gain or lose weight. He says each “genotype” has its own characteristics regarding weight and metabolism, which is why each needs its own diet. Celebrity followers: Oprah, Liz Hurley and Courteney Cox are said to have followed the doctor’s orders. Find out more at: dadamo.com

#8 The Zone Diet

What is it? Perhaps the most famous celebrity diet of all, The Zone, invented by Barry Sears, says the body requires an optimum ratio of carbohydrates, protein and fats: 40 percent, 30 percent and 30 percent respectively. This ratio helps followers to stay in a healthy zone, as determined by hormonal influences within their bodies. Not only does The Zone help you lose weight, but working out all those percentages will also improve your maths. Celebrity followers: If reports are true, almost every fit and fabulous celebrity has tried The Zone. Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt were supposedly followers during their marriage. Find out more at: zonediet.com

#9 The 3-Hour Diet

What is it? This one’s pretty obvious… you have to eat every three hours, which means six meals a day. Dieters are told to get a mental picture of their portion sizes: a Rubik’s cubesized portion of carbs at breakfast, lunch and dinner, and a deck of playing cards-sized portion of protein, a water bottle cap-sized portion of fat, and a stack of three DVD-sized portions of fruit and vegetables at each meal. Celebrity followers: Reports say Jessica Biel, Angelina Jolie, Lucy Liu and Jennifer Lopez have all followed this one. Find out more at: jorgecruise.com

#10 The 5-Factor Diet

What is it? Celebrity trainer Harley Pasternak’s 5-Factor Diet encourages dieters to cook with five ingredients or less and follow his rigorous exercise regime. The basic rules are: eat five meals a day with five core ingredients in each recipe, and do five short workouts a week. That’s it? Seems like a winner to us. Celebrity followers: Eva Mendes, Megan Fox, Kayne West, Alicia Keys and Jessica Simpson have all been said to follow this regime. Find out more at: harleypasternak.com 42 slim magazine winter 2014

health update

We all talk a lot about stress, but exactly what is it? What effect does it have on us? And what can we do to manage it?

slim-magazine.com.au 45

S

tress is a feeling you have when you face a situation you think you cannot manage. Stress can make you feel anxious, irritable, forgetful, sleepless and unable to cope. Stress is a process, not a diagnosis. We experience stress when there is an imbalance between the demands being made on us and our resources to cope with those demands. The level and extent of stress a person may feel depends a great deal on their attitude to a particular situation. An event that may be extremely stressful for one person can be a mere hiccup in another person’s life. You may feel under pressure to do something and fear you may fail. The more important the outcome, the more stressed you feel. You can feel stressed by external situations (too much work, children misbehaving) and by internal triggers (the way you think about external situations). Stress is not always a bad thing. Some people thrive on stress and even need it to get things done. When the term ‘stress’ is used in a clinical sense, it refers to a situation that causes discomfort and distress for a person and can lead to other mental health problems, such as anxiety and depression. As a health problem, stress occurs when a person feels that the demands made on them exceed their ability to cope. Stress may also contribute to physical illness. When stress turns into a serious illness, it is important to get professional help as soon as possible. Untreated anxiety disorders can lead to serious depression.

Effects of stress

• Emotional – anxiety, depression, tension, anger •T he way we think – poor concentration, forgetfulness, indecisiveness, hopelessness, apathy •B ehavioural – increased drinking and smoking, insomnia, accident proneness, weight problems, obsessive-compulsive behaviour, nervousness, gambling.

Stress and physical illness

now open at Capri on via roma

When we feel under stress, our body kicks into high gear to deal with the threat. Our heartbeat, breathing rate and blood pressure all go up. The longer we feel stressed, the greater the demand on our body. The more often we are placed under stress, the more often we have to use energy to cope. There is growing evidence that stress may contribute to physical illness such as cardiovascular disease (although this link remains controversial and research is ongoing), high blood pressure, proneness to infection and chronic fatigue. Whatever the cause, physical diseases need appropriate medical management before any attempt is made at stress management. Untreated stress can turn into a mental illness such as an anxiety disorder or depression. Almost everyone experiences some anxiety. This is normal. However, an anxiety disorder is different from everyday anxiety – it is more severe, can persist and may interfere with a person’s daily life. Common anxiety disorders include: • Panic disorder • Specific phobias – such as fear of flying or of spiders • Agoraphobia – fear of public places or of being away from home • Social anxiety disorder – fear of the scrutiny and judgement of others •P ost-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) – following a real and very distressing event such as a disaster, accident, war, torture, violent death or assault. Anxiety is a very treatable condition. There are many different psychological and medication options. Treatments need to be individually decided on and regularly reviewed to make sure they are effective and to minimise side effects of medications. Separately and in combination, psychotherapy and medication therapy generally produce good results.

Untreated stress, anxiety disorders and depression

Untreated anxiety disorders can lead to serious depression. Depressive illness is common – about 17 percent of Australians will suffer from depression at some time in their life. Depression is about twice as common in women as in men. The most common time in life for people to suffer from depression is in their 40s. However, it can develop at any age. Depression is often associated with an increased incidence of suicide. The annual suicide rate for people with depression is three or four times higher than that of other psychiatric disorders.

“Stress occurs when a person feels that the demands made on them exceed their ability to cope.”

stress – the simple facts

• Stress is when you feel under pressure to do something and think you will fail • A balanced lifestyle and coping strategies can help you manage stress • Issues that cause stress cannot always be resolved but changing your expectations of a problem may help • Untreated stress can lead to serious illness • It’s important to get help if you feel you can’t cope. Management of stress

The old adage ‘prevention is better than cure’ is certainly true for stress management. It will help if you: •E xercise regularly – regular exercise is a great way to manage stress. You should do some form of exercise that causes you to feel puffed afterwards – a leisurely stroll to the bus stop is not enough! Have at least 20 minutes of exercise three times a week • Avoid conflict – avoid situations that make you feel stressed such as unnecessary arguments and conflict (although ignoring a problem is not always the best way to reduce stress). Assertiveness is fine but becoming distressed is not •R elax – give yourself some time to relax each day and try to spend time with people who make you feel good about yourself •E at well – a nutritious diet is important. Eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables and avoid sweet and fatty foods •S leep – a good sleep routine is essential. If you have difficulty falling asleep, do something calm and relaxing before you go to bed like listening to music or reading • Enjoy your life – it’s important to make time to have some fun and to get a balance in your life. To deal with stress more effectively, it helps to investigate your stresses and how you react to them. Try to: •U nderstand what situations make you feel stressed •U nderstand what situations you can and can’t control •P repare for stressful events in advance, by thinking about the future •K eep yourself healthy with good nutrition, exercise and regular relaxation •T ry to do happy things every day. Think yourself Experts say what we think and how we respond to stressful situations has the power to shape how well, how energetic, or even how young we feel.

48 slim magazine winter 2013

Well

W

e all do it: give ourselves a little running commentary on our performance, our health, or our relationships. Maybe we miss a deadline for a project at work and our brain says: “You idiot! How could you have forgotten something so important?” Or we break up with our lover and a sneaky little voice tells us: “It was only a matter of time. How could he love someone like you?” Of course, not all of us have quite such a negative dialogue or response to stress. Some of us are little Pollyannas. When things go wrong, we give ourselves a pep talk and, even in the face of startling evidence to the contrary, we believe that things will actually improve, or that we are without nasty flaws. So, is how we talk to ourselves in the face of life’s stressors a big deal? Well, yes, as it turns out, as medical science slowly discovers that you can actually think yourself healthy, or think yourself unwell, and that this is not just some hippy dippy idea propounded by fringe practitioners.

I think therefore I am

What we think and how we respond to stressful situations has the power to shape how well, how energetic, or even how young we feel. More specifically, our brain and our immune systems are intimately connected, and the messages that our running dialogue – or response to the world around us – generates, is the start of a chemical reaction that will have a profound impact on our bodies. “The immune system is almost an extension of the central nervous system,” says Dr Marc Cohen, Professor of Complementary Medicine at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. “It secretes chemicals that directly influence the immune cells.” These chemicals are molecules, short chains of amino acids called peptides and receptors, that can be found in your brain and also in your stomach, muscles, glands and all your major organs, and they’re sending messages back and forth. When your response to an event is “stressful”, your blood pressure rises, platelets becoming stickier, white blood cells mobilise, cortisol levels increase … in other words, your body is under attack. “The mind has the key role in eliciting the stress response,” says Craig Hassad, a senior lecturer in the Monash University Department of General Practice, in Victoria. “(Yet) events are just events unless our thinking interprets them as stressful and threatening.”

Yes, it matters

To date negative responses to stress have been linked with everything from the common cold to cancers and autoimmune disorders. Medical researchers now know, for example, that high levels of stress and depression are as bad for increasing our risk of cancer and heart disease as eating a high fat diet, or drinking excessive amounts of alcohol. In a paper published in The Lancet in 2004, scientists from the State University of Londrina, in Brazil, reported that chronic stress and depression “probably impairs the immune response and contributes to the development and progression of some types of cancer.” “In general, both stressors and depression are associated with the decreased natural-killer-cell activities that affect processes such as immune surveillance of tumours.” A better understanding of the communication between the brain and the immune system could contribute to new clinical and treatment strategies, they said. Recently the Heart Foundation of Australia issued a statement saying that there is strong and consistent evidence that people who experience depression (which can be described as stress turned inwards) or are socially isolated are at greater risk of developing coronary heart disease. “These factors can have as great an effect on risk as other, betterknown factors such as smoking, high cholesterol levels or high blood pressure,” it said.

“ Can you think yourself healthy, or think yourself unhealthy?” asks Cohen. “Absolutely.”

Psycho what?

According to a study by the University of Colorado-Boulder, in the United States: “The disparity between physical stressors and psychological stressors is only an illusion.” This mind-body science already has a name. It’s called psychoneuroimmunology and practitioners from disciplines including psychology, neurosciences, immunology, pharmacology, psychiatry, behavioural medicine, infectious diseases, and rheumatology, are all attempting to unlock its secrets. “Can you think yourself healthy, or you think yourself unhealthy?” asks Cohen. “Absolutely.” (He does add, however, that he doesn’t find the idea that people are somehow to blame for their disease helpful or appropriate. Rather, whatever disease you do have, having a positive attitude and reframing what the disease means to your life will have a very profound effect on your wellness, he says.) The possible enhancement of immune function by behavioural strategies like relaxation, hypnosis, exercise and cognitive-behavioural interventions (reframing negative thought patterns into positive ones) is already generating considerable scientific interest. Says Professor Ron Glaser, of the Department of Psychiatry, at Ohio State University College of Medicine, Columbus: “Although it’s not yet clear to what extent these changes translate into any concrete improvements in relevant aspects of health, the preliminary evidence is promising.” Further good news is that you don’t necessarily have to see a therapist to have a healthier mind/body connection although you will need to make a conscious effort to retrain your brain. “If you see a feel-good movie, or perform an altruistic act, that will be of greater benefit to your health than watching a horror movie, or suffering from a shock or trauma that depresses the immune system,” says Cohen. “I also personally find every opportunity to have really positive thoughts. I consciously don’t have a television and I don’t watch the news because I am protective of what goes into my consciousness. I also meditate as much as I can, sleep well and love my work.” slim-magazine.com.au 49

o t n i s s e n t i f How to fit Put the excuses away and make time for you.

e f i l r u yo

A

re you a fitness devotee or a reluctant exerciser? The first is the woman who gets up at 6am, puts her workout gear on and sweats it out before breakfast. The second is the rest of us. Yes, we’d like to exercise more … if only we could find the time, or even commit to be in the one place – step class at 6pm on Tuesdays – regularly. But how likely does either seem when there are constant mobile calls or emails to return and our responsibilities at work or home aren’t exactly decreasing? “One of the most common excuses for inactivity is lack of time,” confirms celebrity trainer and author Donna Aston. Unfortunately for those of us who moan that there never seems to be a moment to run in the park or do 10km on the stairmaster, it is just an excuse, says Aston. “What you need is greater time management skills to prioritize the things that are important. If you wait until you have some spare time to exercise … I think we all know time is never spare!”

Just make time

While Aston, who herself used to be overweight and unfit, believes we must simply make time to exercise, she also sympathises with the demands of high-pressure lifestyles. The secret, she says, is to maximise the time we do have to workout. For this reason, all-round workouts, such as power versions of Pilates like Body Balance classes, that combine core exercises with more dynamic fitness-to-music, or Body Attack classes that combine aerobics with strength and stabilisation exercises, are a growing trend at gyms.

Mind muscles

Learning how to develop the mind-muscle connection is another way to get maximum results with the minimum amount of time, says Aston. Simply put, this means focusing on the muscle you are working instead of the guy on the weights machine who resembles Ryan Gosling. “It’s all about quality, not quantity,” she says. Mark McKeon, a Melbourne-based motivational speaker and author of Work a Little Less, Live a Little More, agrees. For clients who are determined to stay busy, McKeon designs programmes that work the whole body in just two 30-minute sessions a week. “If this is you, you must train your upper body, lower body, heart and lungs in the same session,” he says. “Don’t only ride a bike. Don’t just lift weights. You need a combination workout to stretch and tone your muscles while including a cardio or aerobic section to flush and train your circulatory system.” Start with stretching and light jogging and move onto rowing, climbing, or stepping before launching into resistance exercises such as step-ups, dips, squats, push-ups and abdominal crunches, then warming down.

Outsmart sloth

McKeon also advises the chronically busy: “Morning workouts are one of the greatest time-management techniques of them all. Your exercise is done for the day and the only time you’ve used has been traded off from excess sleep.” Of course there are other ways to outsmart sloth. Try getting involved in a team sport, where you have to show up! Or exercise sneakily e.g. rollerblading, dancing, bike riding, or doing something you would consider pure fun. And for those who are always on the run and want to exercise as they go, or on a whim, the latest trend – fitness programmes you can download to your MP3 player – are ideal. Aston has released her own selection (donnaaston.com) – it’s a bit like having a personal trainer on tap so, even if you suddenly find yourself with 30 minutes of spare time, you can press play and start getting fitter. Excuses not to exercise? Not any more. 50 slim magazine winter 2014

try a tri

It’s becoming the most popular fitness pastime with men, women and children. Here’s your complete guide to training for your first triathlon with expert tips from Triathlon Australia’s national talent coach Keiran Barry and Olympic triathlete Emma Moffatt.

A

ustralia boasts the perfect weather for outdoor sports, and triathlon is a sport growing rapidly in popularity across the nation due to its versatility and accessibility for all ages and fitness levels. With distances ranging from 100 metre swim, three kilometre ride, and one kilometre run for beginners, right up to 3800 metre swims, 180 kilometre rides, and 42 kilometre runs for long course and ironman (and woman) distances, there is an event for everybody.

How do I get started?

The most important aspect of participating in your first triathlon is choosing an event that is right for you. Can’t swim? Try a duathlon which is a combination of running and cycling. Can’t ride? Try an aquathlon which is a combination of swimming and running. Have a look at the distances of the various events and choose one you feel comfortable with. For your first triathlon, explore the various novice or enticer events on offer, then you can work your way up over time to sprint, standard, Half Iron or Iron distances.

How do I get help?

One of the best ways to stay motivated and stick to a regime is to train with a friend or a club. Triathlon has a very strong community with local clubs across the nation offering support, both group and individual training and advice from experienced triathletes. The coaches at these clubs can help develop personalised training plans and most importantly, provide the support you need to stay on track and reach your goals.

Top training tips A common obstacle faced by people training for a triathlon is they may be strong in one area whether it be bike, swim or run, and weaker in the others, making it hard to decide which to focus on the most. It’s important to alternate and train in each leg of the triathlon. While you should dedicate extra time to improving your weakest, you should also train on your strongest area. Most people find this more enjoyable because it will be easier and it will help motivate you to stick to your training plan. It’s much easier to do something you are familiar with than something you’re not good at. It’s important to remember you should be able to maintain a conversation with someone during training while you’re running or cycling. If you can’t you should slow it down and pace yourself.

Swim

Swimming is usually the leg of triathlon people have the most hesitation about, but it doesn’t have to be. The important thing is to start your training slowly. Get in the pool, swim a lap, then have a rest. You don’t need to swim huge distances if you’re just starting out, but work on gradually increasing your distances over time. If your event has an open water swim, make sure you practice in this element to get a feel for it. Local triathlon clubs do outdoor group training sessions, which is a great chance to head out into the open water with others to support you. If you’re hesitant to swim in oceans or lakes, there are plenty of events which require laps of a pool for the swimming leg. Swimming with flippers is a great way for beginners to increase the amount of time you can swim for when you first start out. You won’t be able to use them in most races, so over time start training without flippers to ensure you can swim well without them.

Bike

First time participants often don’t know what kind of bike training to do while preparing for their first triathlon. It’s recommended you combine your training with both high intensity training to increase strength, and lower intensity over longer distances to increase stamina. Train at a speed you will feel comfortable sustaining the entire length of the cycling leg of your event. It’s very important to maintain a consistent speed using the gears of the bike like you would a car while applying moderate pressure on the pedals. If you’re using too much downward pressure on the pedals, you will wear out your quads quickly and if you’re pedalling too fast with too little resistance you will cover less ground while exerting a lot of energy. If you’d rather not train on the open road, start by training on a stationary bike. It’s important to have some practice outdoors to get used to braking and cornering, so head to a local bike track away from the road to get practice in these areas.

Run

Jennifer Lopez 52 slim magazine winter 2014

You don’t need to be a runner to compete in a triathlon. Anyone can run, it just takes practice and you should start off slowly. Alternate between walking for a minute, and running for a minute, and then build this up to two minutes, three minutes and so on. If you can already run and would like to build your stamina for longer distances, try interval training with short sharp bursts of exercise such as sprints, then rest and keep alternating. Remember to train in the shoes you plan on wearing on the day and break them in.

What do I need?

Tips from Keiran Barry Matthew McConaughey

For novice or enticer triathlon events you don’t need much equipment and most of it you will already have at home: • Bike – any one will do, it doesn’t need to be expensive you just need to be able to ride it • Goggles • Sunglasses • Helmet • Running shoes – don’t wear brand new ones on the day or you’ll end up covered in blisters • Swimmers – you can also have some shorts or a top to wear after the swim if you feel more comfortable, anything will do from boardies to bike pants • Water bottle for your bike

The most important thing to remember when training for your first triathlon is to have fun. Triathlon has a great, supportive community where everyone is encouraged to give it a go. Being part of a local club provides you with an opportunity to be social in a healthy environment with like-minded people.

Teri Hatcher

The goal of participating in your first triathlon is to cross the line, whether this means competing as a team or walking instead of running. Crossing the line should be your goal, no matter how long it takes to get there.

When should I start? When training for novice level triathlons, a general guide is: if you have no fitness, start six weeks out. If you have average fitness, start four weeks out. If you’ve got longer, that’s obviously better. But you can get triathlon-ready in short a period of time if you stick to your training regime. Once you’ve completed a novice triathlon, you can keep building on your fitness by participating in longer distance triathlons.

Tips from Emma Moffatt

On the big day On the day of your first triathlon, don’t go crazy with carb loading, energy gels and drinks. Start your day with a piece of toast with jam or honey and you should avoid alcohol the night before to keep hydrated. On the day there will be friendly technical officials to guide you, but it pays to read through the competition rules for your event to avoid disqualification. It’s important to keep in mind, don’t go too hard too fast. Pace yourself and don’t get distracted with what people around you are doing. Just focus on finishing your race.

Swim

For your swim leg it’s a good idea stay to the back of the group and to the side so you don’t get stuck in the middle. Keep your own pace and save your legs for the bike by using your arms and upper body to propel yourself forward as much as possible.

Bike

It’s common in novice events for participants to waste time running around trying to find their bike during transition. To avoid this problem, throw a brightly coloured towel over your bike so it stands out from the rest. During the race try to sustain a consistent pace and don’t be tempted to speed up to overtake people if you can’t maintain that speed because you’ll wear yourself out.

Run

You don’t need to be fast to compete in triathlon. The key is getting into a steady pace and sticking to it. It’s common practice in novice triathlons that if you can’t run any more you can walk for a while to catch your breath, so don’t be embarrassed if you need to stop every now and then.

Find a local triathlon club or training group so you can train with other people of the same ability as part of an organised group and with a coach. If you don’t join a club or a group then try to encourage some friends to train with you. That way you can motivate each other and push each other along. It’s important to set realistic, achievable goals so you can see results and improvement. Don’t take on too much to begin with as it is likely that you won’t be able to keep up the training load, resulting in demotivation and even injury.

ustralia’s top ranked woman mountain biker, Bec Henderson, has recently been added to the sponsorship team of Yakima Australia, manufacturers of racks and carriers used to transport premium sporting equipment. At school Bec enjoyed running and playing hockey as well, but weekend rides in the bush with her father and older brother helped her make the choice that led to the status she enjoys today as Australia’s top-ranked elite woman competitor. “I started riding at 10 years old and continued doing all three sports until late in high school, when I decided it was time to focus my energy into one sport,” Bec said, “and mountain biking was the standout to me”. As a professional competitor on the world circuit, Bec spends at least half a year travelling to competitions, which is why she says her sponsorship with Yakima is such a good fit. “I travel more than six months per year visiting most continents,” she said. “I have made so many friends of different nationalities and we all have something in common; there is no language barrier when you are smoking down a single trail and laughing all the way to the bottom!” Bec recently competed in the UCI MTB Word Cup series in South Africa and at the UCI Mountain Biking World Cup in Cairns. Competitive mountain biking requires a high level of fitness, which Bec carefully programmes into her schedule each week. As well as sessions on the mountain bike every day, including sprints and climbing training, Bec also rides her road bike on longer training days. To outsiders, mountain bike racing can look challenging, to say the least. In the last few years courses have become shorter and more intense and now include technical features like rock gardens and steep drops. But Bec is a great advocate for mountain biking for all and loves the fact that she can still enjoy weekend rides with at all sorts of people who just love the sport. “You don’t have to be a World Class mountain biker to enjoy riding on your local trails with friends,” she said. “You can ride your bike socially, or you can go out for hours on your own, peacefully, or smashing yourself to pieces, it is such a great feeling!” From now on Bec knows her bikes will arrive at any competition in tip top shape in carriers provided by Yamika. “I’m lucky to have such great sponsors and supporters, it’s really important to have strong people and companies behind you to keep you racing and competitive.” Yakima also distributes systems used to transport other gear such as kayaks, skis, cargo, and camping equipment. t the risk of sounding like a radical on a soapbox: you did not wake up one morning ten kilos overweight and you most certainly will not drop that weight overnight no matter what the packaging or reality TV show tells you. About the only benefit of being overweight that I can think of is that you need more muscle to carry that weight around. And we all know that muscle is your metabolic furnace and is what burns calories – right? If you lose body weight dramatically and suddenly you are going to shed fluid and muscle mass first and fat last. Then when you regain that weight – and you will because you have reduced your ability to burn calories – you will pack on fat and not muscle. So let’s avoid the latest marketing traps and look beyond promises of rapid weight loss and look for a more sensible, more realistic approach that allows you to keep, if not enhance, your muscle mass without turning into Arnold Schwarzenegger in his heyday. Remember that 500gm to one kilo per week is realistic weight loss. Some weeks you will lose more and some weeks less and as long as your weekly average is 500gms or more you are on track. If you don’t take that first step and start your weight loss journey you will never reach your destination.

Storing your produce

Keep fruits such as apples, pears and bananas away from the rest of your produce as they naturally produce ethylene gas which will ripen the fruit and vegetables around them – especially if they’re in a closed environment such as a crisper or sealed container. On the flip side, if you want to ripen an avocado, place it in a paper bag with a banana to speed up the process. Cut pineapples into small pieces and store in an airtight container in the fridge the moment you get them so they’re ready to eat as a snack – you’ll be surprised how quickly you get through them. You can also do this with navel oranges which are great eating at the moment. Whole oranges can be kept for up to two weeks at room temperature and even longer if you keep them in the fridge, however if you do cut up your fruit, eat it within two days – any longer and it will start to ferment. If you have leftover limes or lemons, juice them and keep the juice in ice-trays in the freezer to add to drinks at a later date. Store broccoli in a plastic bag in your fridge crisper. Onions and garlic should be stored in a dark, well-ventilated space; they can be hung in a net in a dark corner of your kitchen so they’re on hand for cooking. As Aussie garlic is only available nine months of the year you can store garlic whole or crushed with a touch of salt submerged in good olive oil. Unwashed potatoes and sweet potatoes are best stored in a cool dark place, such as inside a brown paper bag in the cupboard. However all washed potatoes that have clean skin (no dirt) such as Desiree’s or Nadine’s should be kept in the fridge crisper to stop them from going green. To store iceberg lettuce, remove the core, wash and drain the leaves and place in a container or plastic bag in the fridge. Capsicum will last up to a week in the fridge; given that plastic bags make them sweat it’s best to store them in a paper bag or crisper.

Try and buy sweet corn still in its husk rather than already cut on a cling film tray as it stores best with the husk still covering the kernels. Mushrooms are best stored in a paper bag in the fridge. Soft leaf herbs such as parsley, basil, chervil and coriander can be stored in the fridge for several days, they will last better if the stalks are in a tall glass of water and the leaves are covered with a plastic bag. For longer periods, herbs such as basil and rosemary can be kept in the freezer and added to your cooking at a later date. You may lose some of the texture but the flavour will still be great. Keeping bananas in a cool dark place to slow down the ripening process – if your bananas do go too ripe, use them to make a sweet moist banana cake. If you don’t get through your entire bunch of spring onions, you can replant them in your garden and then just harvest them as you need. Thanks to Aussie Farmers Direct. chia

A

Shannon Flavell, nutritionist and naturopath for Morlife, looks at the food on everyone’s lips, chia.

re you eating chia seeds yet? As a naturopath and research nutritionist, I’m here to tell you that the media hype is true – chia seeds really do live up to their ‘super’ food title. They’re packed full of nutrients that will keep your body vibrant, strong and healthy. Here are a few of their many nutritional benefits:

Protein

Chia seeds are one of the richest sources of plant protein. This is great news for vegetarians and also athletes who want some variety when increasing their protein intake. Adequate dietary protein is essential for growth and repair of muscles, liver function, brain function, for hair, skin and nails and to keep us fuller for longer!

essential fatty acids

Chia seeds contain alpha linolenic acid (ALA) which converts to Omega-3 in the body. Omega-3 is extremely important for reducing inflammation. When you realise how many diseases stem from inflammatory processes, you understand why Omega-3 is absolutely crucial for overall wellness and longevity. 60 slim magazine winter 2014

Minerals

Chia seeds are full of important minerals such as calcium, potassium and magnesium as well as a range of B vitamins. Due to modern farming practices, these nutrients are much lower in the foods we eat today, therefore we need to dose up on them whenever we can and chia seeds provide the perfect source!

fibre

If you’ve ever let chia seeds sit in a smoothie for a few minutes you will see that the liquid quickly becomes a solid. This is because chia seeds are a great source of fibre. Sufficient fibre is extremely important for promoting bowel function, healthy stools and ensuring a happy environment in your gut.

antioxidants

Just when you thought this little seed couldn’t possibly fit in any more nutrients – chia seeds are also packed with antioxidants! Who doesn’t want more disease fighting, skin nourishing antioxidants in their diet? Another great benefit of chia seeds is they are extremely versatile with a neutral flavour that can be added to a variety of dishes and snacks. Add them to smoothies, desserts, in baking or to savoury dishes to give your body a daily nutritional boost. These tiny little seeds pack a powerful punch of nutrients that your body will love.

In their books, Eat Fat Be Thin and Eat Fat Be Lean, authors Dr. Natalie Kringoudis and Andi Lew explain why eating fat can make you thin.

W

e all know that reducing the amount of fat we eat is the key to losing weight, managing cholesterol and preventing health problems, right? Wrong, according to Dr. Natalie Kringoudis and Andi Lew: good fats help you to lose weight. Andi and Natalie say they joined forces to create their books Eat Fat Be Thin and Eat Fat Be Lean, because they are both passionate about inspiring women of all ages to be healthy and stay lean. The book tells us how to eat well by including ‘good’ fats in our diet that actually help us to lose weight. “Without putting words (or cake) in your mouth, repeat after us, ‘You can have your cake and eat it too!’ Eat Fat Be Thin and Eat Fat Be Lean show you how. In fact, good fats help you to lose weight,” Andi says. “These wheat free, dairy free and sugar free recipes are so easy to do. The kids get to enjoy them too and the bonus is the good fats they consume are great for their developing nervous systems.” Natalie says it is a project they are both passionate about. “When Andi rang and asked me to co-write with her, there was no hesitation,” Natalie says. “She had a vision, and the topic of ‘how to eat fat and not get fat’ had been on my heart to share too, so this was a wonderful way to pool together our knowledge and help others understand just how to stay in shape by fuelling your body well. “Not only do we serve up the hows and whys, but we’ve also included recipes, so you can bring this into your home for all to enjoy the benefits. This is just another way you can enjoy delicious treats and stay on track.”

recipes Raw Chocolate Brownies 3 cups of walnuts 1 cup of raw cacao 2 cups of pitted medjool dates (large sweet dates) ¼ teaspoon salt In a food processor, pulse walnuts until chopped roughly. Add the cacao and salt and pulse several times to combine. Add the dates one at a time until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Line a tray with baking paper in a slice tin and pack mixture firmly inside, pressing down until it resembles a slice. Set in fridge for 20 minutes. Cut into small squares and sprinkle with cacao to serve. Notes: Add to the goodness of walnuts, by using cacao. In its raw form, cacao is a super food high in many mineral and vitamins. It doesn’t end there – cacao is like an atomic bomb of feel good chemicals ready to explode on impact. No wonder you feel so good after eating one of these brownies. So, there you have it – it’s a total win-win recipe, packed with everything you need and nothing you don’t. You could add so many ingredients to personalise these, such as freeze-dried strawberries or blueberries. The options are limitless.

Quick Chia Seed Puddings serves 2

½ cup of chia seeds 1 ½ cups of cashew or almond milk (or regular milk if you prefer) ¼ cup berries Stevia to taste ½ teaspoon of vanilla powder Pinch of salt Place all ingredients in a bowl and stir. Divide into containers or bowls and store in the fridge. You will need to allow it to absorb the liquid – the chia will take on a glutenous consistency (even though they are gluten free).

Spiced Ginger Cupcakes makes 12

1 cup of xylitol (an alternative to sugar and artificial sweeteners, derived from the birch tree) 2 tablespoons ginger 2 tablespoons cinnamon 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda 3 eggs 1 cup of yoghurt 1 vanilla bean icing

1 cup of spreadable goat’s cheese 2 tablespoon xylitol Pre-heat oven to 180 degrees. Line muffin tin with cupcake cases – enough for 12 cakes. Combine dry ingredients and mix well. Add the eggs, yoghurt and vanilla bean and using an electric mixer, beat ingredients for about one minute or until well combined. You might need to stop and scrape down the sides. Spoon mixture into cases. Place in the oven for 15 - 20 minutes or until skewer comes out clean. To make the icing, combine goat’s cheese and xylitol. Once cakes are cool, spread tops with a generous dollop of icing. 64 slim magazine winter 2014

Nut and Yoghurt Tart 3 cups of almond meal 2 cup xylitol (see previous page for description) 120g coconut butter 2 eggs, lightly beaten 1.5 cups of yoghurt (we prefer sheep’s milk yoghurt) Zest and juice of one orange 1 teaspoon salt Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celsius. Combine almond meal, xylitol, coconut butter and salt in a bowl then rub ingredients together with fingertips. Spoon half the mixture into a lightly greased (with coconut butter) and lined spring form tin, gently pressing to evenly cover base. With the remaining mixture add egg, yoghurt and cinnamon to remaining crumble mixture and beat with a wooden spoon until smooth and creamy. Pour over prepared base and smooth top. Bake until golden (30-35 minutes). Cool in pan on a wire rack to room temperature then serve with extra yoghurt.

The 4 Ingredients cookbooks took Australia by storm. Readers fell in love with the oh-so-easy to follow recipes that featured – you guessed it – four basic ingredients. Kim McCosker, author of 4 Ingredients, has recently launched the 4 Ingredients Wellness Series, a trilogy of cookbooks 4 Ingredients Gluten Free and Lactose Free, 4 Ingredients Diabetes, and 4 Ingredients Allergies. The Wellness series features easy and delicious recipes free of gluten and lactose and include recipes that take into account those suffering from allergies and diabetes. “The whole point for me is to write books that encourage people to cook in their kitchen,” she said. Kim is passionate about helping everyday families save time and money in the kitchen with her book series, television show, and the fastest growing Facebook page in Australia. She said she had been astounded to discover the number of men, students and retirees who had embraced the cookbooks. Kim was born in Stanthorpe in Queensland. She graduated with a Bachelor of International Finance from Griffith University and worked with MLC as a financial planner, completing her Diploma in Financial Planning from Deakin University. She worked for seven years in the finance industry before resigning to spend the time raising her three beautiful boys. It was during this phase of her life that 4 Ingredients came into being. Today, 4 Ingredients is her passion. It is the sheer joy of learning new things about food, recipes and kitchen wisdom that Kim says drives her to create, share, write, write and write some more. Cook, covered, until almost all the milk has been absorbed, about 8 minutes. Spoon evenly across two bowls and garnish with remaining banana slices and raspberries. The SLIM Lunch at Glass Glass Dining and Lounge Bar was the scene for SLIM Magazine’s Healthy Gourmet Lunch in June. 140 guests dined on a delicious lunch with wines from Déjà Vu, S.Pellegrino sparkling water, table decorations by Love Notes, event styling and stationery and flowers by Julia Rose. Olivia Scott hosted and guests were dazzled by performer Danny Waho and a parade from Marina Mirage featuring Lorna Jane, Tommy Bahama, Element, Lovejoy, Sunburn, Ocean Beach and Adrenalin. The event raised thousands for the Gold Coast Community Fund, and of course guests went home with the SLIM goodie bag, full of luxurious gifts. Photos courtesy of Jenni Purdy. test drive

The all new BMW X5 SLIM’s Kate Bennett took the BMW X5 for a spin. She liked it so much, she bought one for herself.

T

he BMW X5 is an amazing car. I have had it for three months and I absolutely love it. It’s so economical; I had been driving it for two weeks before I had to put fuel in. It’s really roomy, it looks sensational, the kids love it and best of all I feel safe when I’m on the road. Even in wet weather it just seems to stick to the road. Here are my top ten reasons to love the BMW X5.

1. Design

With its dynamic, upright proportions, the third-generation BMW X5 is instantly recognisable as a BMW X model. However, it also has several new design features which further emphasise its majestic appearance and unbeatable versatility. Inside, top-quality leather, refined surfaces, atmospheric lighting and maximum comfort: Immerse yourself in the interior of the BMW X5 and feel the exclusiveness.

2. Functionality

Loads of room and room to load: Transporting heavy or bulky objects is no problem in the BMW X5 – thanks to a variety of practical and space-saving features.

3. BMW EfficientDynamics

With BMW EfficientDynamics, BMW combines efficiency and driving pleasure with the aim of approaching the ultimate goal of zero-emissions mobility.

4. Aerodynamics

The entire vehicle design is testament to the BMW EfficientDynamics philosophy. The optimised, aerodynamic front apron and undercarriage feature innovative improvements that reduce air resistance and fuel consumption.

5. ECO PRO Mode

As soon as you switch to the ECO PRO Mode, everything is geared towards greater efficiency and depending on your individual driving style, this results in a reduction in fuel consumption of up to 20 per cent (according to an internal BMW fuel consumption study).

6. Camera systems

Enjoy the view: In the BMW X5, the integrated camera systems offer better visibility, for example at junctions and in difficult traffic situations. 78 slim magazine winter 2014

7. BMW Night Vision with Dynamic Light Spot

Optional BMW Night Vision with Dynamic Light Spot detects people and larger animals at a long distance – and selectively illuminates them. A thermal image camera in the radiator grille with a range of up to 300 metres relays images of people and animals directly onto the Control Display.

8. Park Assistant

The optional Park Assistant makes parallel parking easier. Parking spaces of the right size can be displayed and selected using the Control Display. When the button is kept pressed down, the system actively supports the driver during parking, taking care of gear selection, steering, accelerating and braking.

9. Navigation System Professional

Reach your destination more quickly and more easily – with the latest-generation Navigation system Professional, which gives you a head start, shows you the way and helps you to drive more efficiently. The full-colour BMW Head-Up Display projects relevant driving information directly into your line of sight, allowing you to fully concentrate on driving.

10. Adaptive LED Headlight

The optional Adaptive LED Headlight comprises an accent light, low-beam and high-beam function, anti-dazzle high-beam headlights, LED fog lights, cornering light, turn indicators, daytime driving lights and Adaptive Headlight with variable light control. n o i t a r i p Ins m i t a b r e v “Women are responsible for two thirds of the work done worldwide, yet earn only 10% of the total income and own 1% of the property… So, are we equals? Until the answer is yes, we must never stop asking.” Daniel Craig

“Sometimes I’m running and get passed by a 70-year-old woman with a better body. I can’t be skinny all the time. I like to drink and I like to eat. I like burgers and bagels.” Chelsea Handler

“I have a crumble baby belly, boobs are worse for wear after two kids...I’m doing all right. I don’t look in the mirror and go, ‘Oh, I look fantastic!’. Of course I don’t. Nobody is perfect. I just don’t believe in perfection. But I do believe in saying, ‘This is who I am and look at me not being perfect!’. I’m proud of that.” Kate Winslet

“I’ve never had one of those amazing yoga bodies. My body is what it is. I am sure if I went on a crash diet, lost two stone and toned up I could make loads of money by making fitness videos and selling my story to the tabloids. But I don’t want to encourage women to be anything other than what they are. That’s very important to me.” Kelly Brook

“I wrote Bootylicious because, at the time, I’d gained some weight and the pressure that people put you under, the pressure to be thin, is unbelievable. I was just 18 and you shouldn’t be thinking about that. You should be thinking about building up your character and having fun, and the song was just telling everyone to forget what people are saying, you’re bootylicious. That’s all. It’s a celebration of curves and a celebration of women’s bodies.” Beyonce
