Be medicinewise with your kids

Research suggests that vitamin D could play a role in the prevention and treatment of a number of different conditions, including type 1 and type 2 diabetes, hypertension, glucose intolerance, and multiple sclerosis. A study by St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney, the Garvan Institute of Medical Research and the University of NSW suggests exposure of five to 15 minutes of sunlight four to six times a week, outside of the hours of 10am – 2pm, is the best way to boost vitamin D – but don’t forget the 30+.

When kids get fluey, we tend to reach for the cough mixture, but NPS MedicineWise is urging parents to heed the advice from the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) restricting the use of cough and cold medicines to treat young children amid concerns they may be harmful, and they may not work.

A review conducted by the TGA found that there was little credible research showing the effectiveness of cough and cold medicines, particularly in children, and these medicines should not be given to children younger than six years old.

The new advice recommends that parents should also ask a doctor, pharmacist or nurse practitioner for advice before giving cough and cold medicines to children aged 6 to 11 years.

NPS MedicineWise Head of Programs Ms Karen Kaye says that the new advice reflects that the potential for harm from cough and cold medicines in young children outweighs the potential benefits.

“It can be distressing to have a child who has a cough, cold or flu but there is little evidence for the effectiveness of cough and cold medicines,” says Ms Kaye. “This is because few clinical trials have proven the effectiveness of cough and cold medicines, particularly in children, but some of the active ingredients in these medicines may cause serious side effects in children, for example seizures or fits.

“There are many simple remedies that can help to relieve their symptoms, including making sure your child gets plenty of rest, ensuring they drink plenty of water,” says Ms Kaye.

“A drink made with hot water, honey and lemon is a simple and effective home remedy, and for older children an ice cube or a throat lozenge can soothe a sore throat. If you have any concerns about your child’s health, if their symptoms get worse or if their symptoms don’t improve you should certainly speak to a health professional,” she says.

A simple blood test may replace the mammogram to screen for breast cancer. After 10 years of research, a team from the University of Leicester and the Imperial College London has started a clinical study in the UK ’s largest breast screening clinic at Charing Cross Hospital, London.

Have the right tools on hand Use non-stick cookware. Try spray oil in place of liquid oil – this will stop food sticking, with much less fat. Greased baking paper is also a great idea to use less oil, butter or margarine.

Choose the right fat When adding fat, choose poly-unsaturated or mono-unsaturated oils and margarines and use less. Eating saturated fats like butter, lard and ghee can increase the risk of heart disease.

Use lower fat ingredients to make a real difference Modify recipes to be healthier by substituting lower fat ingredients like low fat milk and reduced fat cheese. Use evaporated skim milk or ricotta cheese in place of cream, filo pastry instead of short crust or puff pastry, natural yoghurt in place of sour cream and evaporated skim milk with coconut essence in place of coconut milk or cream.

Make up a kitchen survival kit Having the right ingredients on hand makes throwing together a quick, healthy meal easy. y now most of you are probably aware of all the health issues associated with obesity, like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnoea, high cholesterol, joint problems, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), etc. Such health issues have a negative impact on one’s quality of life and serve as great motivators for those wanting to lose weight; however, there are many other benefits that can be equally motivating in permanently defeating the bulge.

It’s important to note that not everyone develops health complications as a result of excessive weight gain; but, the likelihood certainly increases as one’s weight increases. Those fortunate enough to avoid such complications will often find motivation in other areas of their life; however, in the absence of health issues, they can sometimes be difficult to find or adhere to. Some examples include, setting an example to their children about leading a healthy lifestyle, or having more energy to enjoy the outdoors with their kids.

Some complain they’re finding day-to-day responsibilities within their job more challenging with the extra weight they’re carrying; or, they want to be able to shop for clothes with more freedom for choice. Regardless what motivates you to get your weight under control, it’s important to consider there are no rules; and, the more reasons you have to lose weight, the more likely you are to experience the holistic benefits of keeping your weight under control.

Often overlooked are factors related to sex drive, career enhancement or job prosperity, social life, self-esteem, and body image. Why? Because it seems somewhat superficial to admit we want to lose weight for any of these reasons. Superficial or not, this intimately connected world we live in has the potential to give us more reasons to get our weight under control. Looking, feeling, and simply being sexier can work for some in much the same way getting off blood pressure medication works for others. It doesn’t matter what your goals are, if they’re clear and realistic, who cares?

Ultimately, honesty is perhaps the greatest motivator of all; for, once you make an honest assessment of your individual circumstances, only then will you maybe start to bridge the gap between the conscious and unconscious mind and find that key intrinsic motivator-the driving force that distinguishes attempts to lose weight from actual execution of the process. Weight loss has to have intrinsic value and not be just a ‘nice idea’.

Otherwise, in the case of repetitive dieting, all you learn is how to fail.

Honesty is also a pre-requisite to good coping skills and good coping skills are required if you want to embark on a journey to sustainable weight loss. My theory is that weight loss has very little to do with

Oscar Wilde once said, “To love oneself is the beginning of a life-long romance.” Such applies to the roots of self-efficacy; but, these days you could be forgiven for making this philosophy your own and sharing your love for all things you on Facebook. However, if you’re really considering changing your lifestyle to lose weight, you may want to first consider if you really love yourself enough to do so or to at least change your mindset.

Because, only then will you perhaps think, feel, and behave differently.

raditional eating patterns from Mediterranean regions, including parts of Spain, Crete, Greece, Southern France and Italy, have long been considered the healthiest in the world. Populations in these regions have the lowest levels of heart disease and other chronic conditions. The characteristics of a Mediterranean diet include: a high intake of plant-based foods and healthy fats, plenty of fish, small amounts of meat and dairy, with a preference for poultry over red and processed meats, meals complemented with one or two glasses of wine, and regular physical activity.

Over the last nine years, PREDIMED, the largest clinical trial on the Mediterranean diet, has been taking place in Spain to determine the benefits of such eating patterns on cardiovascular disease and other health indicators. The study compares three dietary patterns: a low fat diet, a Mediterranean diet, supplemented with additional olive oil, and a Mediterranean diet, supplemented with 30g of nuts a day. The trial is being conducted across seven communities and involves over 7000 participants.

Over 50 papers from the PREDIMED have been published to date, with the final results due in late 2012. So far, the research has found overwhelming benefits to a Mediterranean diet, especially when supplemented with 30g of nuts a day. Some of the findings include a beneficial effect on waist circumference and BMI, reduced incidence of type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome, reduced inflammation associated with heart disease, and improved cognitive performance.

When comparing the Mediterranean diet to the Australian dietary guidelines, it is interesting to note that both recommend a low intake of saturated fats from foods such as butter, cream, pastries, and sugar sweetened foods and drinks. The main difference is the Mediterranean diet is higher in unsaturated fats and lower in carbohydrates than Australian recommendations. So, unless you have a nut allergy, don’t be afraid to have a handful of nuts every day; it may be just what you need to keep you healthier for longer.

But Jennifer Hawkins says she is still the girl-next-door at heart.

004 was the first time most of us became aware of Jennifer Hawkins.

When she was crowned Miss Universe in front of an estimated viewing audience of over 800 million people worldwide, Jennifer Hawkins’ life changed forever. The youngest of four siblings, Jennifer was raised by her parents Gail and Robert in Newcastle, NSW. When she was crowned Miss Universe, it was her first trip overseas; the then 20-year-old had only recently moved to Sydney Australia from her hometown of Newcastle to pursue a modelling career. Standing there accepting the coveted title, there was something charmingly unpolished about her. The shock at winning was genuine.

“I was in such a state of shock all I wanted to do was call my Mum and Dad,” she has said. The very next day, Jennifer packed her bags and moved into her new home (an apartment in Donald Trump’s Trump Place in New York City).

For the next year Jennifer travelled the world as an ambassador for organisations focusing on HIV and AIDS awareness. It was a giant leap for the girl next door (within weeks of being crowned Jennifer spoke to a crowd of more than 18,000 people, appearing onstage with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and Richard Gere, no less). Over all, I don’t think what I do is completely about my appearance as there are many sides to what I do (ambassador, designer, TV host, model, etc) so I just try and remember that on my ‘yucky’ days. I treat people with respect, and enjoy my life and for me it is more important for me to have a healthy and positive outlook, I think that’s where beauty comes from. I do feel very grateful and lucky to have a family who keep me very grounded.

How important is good health and well being to you, and your ability to do your job well? Being healthy is certainly very important to me. I feel confident and vibrant when I have been exercising and eating a balanced diet. My energy levels are high and I am a much happier person all round.

Hydration, vitamins, vegetables, and rest are key. It is also important to treat yourself every now and again though – I love chocolate or a glass of red.

What are some of the things you do/routines you have to stay physically fit and well? I love running but it is important for me to balance cardio with something else such as Pilates or yoga. I have a Pilates class or personal trainer two to three days a week. I like to be active six days a week and always have a rest day.

There is an idea that top models such as yourself are on a constant diet, yet you seem to be more about a healthy, balanced diet. Is that the case, and if so what are some of the foods you avoid, and foods you embrace in order to stay in such great shape. Personally, I’m not into diets. I do cut back my sugar and processed carbohydrate intake when I have a shoot around the corner. Most of the time I focus on things that are nutritious so that whatever I am eating I know will benefit me in some way but life is too short to stick to that 100 per cent of the time... and it makes things very boring!

What are some of the foods that you enjoy indulging in? Popcorn or a choc top at the movies. I’d eat five mangos a day if I could – too much sugar though. Chocolate with a peppermint tea. Red wine with pizza! Or cheesecake.

You have travelled all around the world. Is there one place that stands out? If so, where and why? Wow, hard to pick. Each country has a special memory. A few that stand out are... South Africa – I went great white shark diving and did many safaris. New York – I lived there, it’s magical and changed my life. Maldives – I think it is heaven. I’d go back anytime!

If you hadn’t become a model and media personality, what type of work do you think you would be doing? Property is a big passion of mine... everything about the investment side, architecture, design and especially the interiors side. I would like to think that this is something I would be involved with no matter what was happening in my life. Also, I’d love to be a singer but, ah, I can’t sing, so that’s that.

What are some of your goals for the future? I want to grow by brands, Cozi and JLH, and continue to work with the amazing companies I am aligned with but aside from that I just want to make sure that everything I do is another step to staying happy.

Designing Cozi and JLH, dinner with my girlfriends, going shopping with my mum and sister and definitely going back to Newcastle to see my family.

#6 Eat yourself happy Examine what you put in your mouth and how it affects you emotionally, mentally and physically. Food has been proven to be linked to happiness. According to food psychologists, the top five mood-enhancing foods are asparagus, bananas, sunflower seeds, pork and brown basmati rice. Aim to cut out at least two junk food items and replace them with healthier choices. Once you start feeling more energetic you will be motivated to change your eating habits for good.

#7 Be grateful for something Adopt an attitude of gratitude. Think of something that you are thankful for every day, from the laughter you share with friends, to the food on your table or the ability to breathe and be alive. You will start to sleep better, feel better, exercise more and develop certain contentment in life that eradicates stress and contributes to overall health.

#1 Stop the negative self-talk Your thoughts become your reality, so start to become aware of the inner chatter and consciously stop flooding your mind with disempowering thoughts. Make it your mission to catch yourself out in the act and replace negative self-talk with an empowering affirmation to snap yourself out of that bad habit.

#2 Pick a mantra Having your own empowering mantra is a great way to power-up, keep focused, ease anxiety and calm the mind. Choose an affirmation or phrase that has special meaning for you by thinking of a problem that you often face and developing a statement that reverses that problem. Your mantra can be spoken silently or out loud and is a great way to develop a positive mindset. Stick it to your fridge or somewhere you can see it all the time.

#3 Off load baggage Negative feelings only serve to weigh you down. Make peace with someone you have had a fall out with. Get things off your chest, take any lessons learnt and let go. If you can’t do it in person, then write a letter about your feelings and either send it or store it somewhere (sometimes just the writing is enough, there is no need to send it). By releasing negative feelings you are healing yourself and clearing energy and emotional blockages that may be holding you back.

#4 Laugh till it hurts Let loose and laugh from the bottom of your heart, because it’s good for your health. Laughing not only floods your body with all sorts of feel-good chemicals, it also boosts circulation, your immune system and helps more oxygen be delivered to your cells. Make it a regular routine to catch up with friends you can share a laugh with, go watch a comedy show or rent some funny DVDs.

#8 Clear the fear Set out to do something that scares you. There’s no better way to feel empowered than feeling the fear and doing it anyway. Make fear your motivator rather than your immobiliser. Fear extinction will not only help you feel stronger it will also help you grow both mentally and emotionally by creating a positive response to counteract future fear responses. So face the fear.

#9 Don’t compare Snap out of the bad habit of comparing yourself to others. Comparing yourself is a useless exercise that only serves to feed insecurity and feelings of inadequacy or, the other extreme, feelings of pride and arrogance. Keep yourself in check and find your own authentic inner power by ceasing to look for re-assurance and validation outside of yourself.

#10 Have faith Remind yourself that everything will be ok. All problems have a solution, or you will find a way to cope. As things move and change, have faith that everything happens for a reason and to help you learn and grow. If you hold firm belief that things will turn out for the best, they most likely will.

From 148kg to 90kg in eight months!

Geoff shares his personal weight loss journey. rowing up, I was always the larger one within my circle of G friends. I weighed around 80kg when I left school at 16 and remember putting on quite a bit of weight over the next five years. At 21 it seemed my weight was spiralling out of control and by the time I was 24 I had reached 116kg. I had already tried a number of diets by then-some conventional and some unconventional-like the delicious cabbage soup diet. I put all the weight I’d lost back on, plus more, and topped the scale at a humungous 148kg. I was 36 years old and starting to have health issues. Life was getting pretty miserable; I was always sick, my blood pressure was at its peak, and I was on the verge of getting type 2 diabetes.

“In 2010, whilst on holiday in New Zealand, I became very ill and visited a local GP. Following his examination, the GP said something to me that I will never forget, something that has since made change the way I treat myself and my body. “You should be dead”, he said. I decided right there and then that it was time to seek a permanent solution to my weight problem. On returning home to Australia I discussed what happened with a very close friend of mine who had Lap Band surgery about 3 years ago and had since lost about 30kg. If you’re low on happy and high on anxiety, turn it around with these simple steps you can do right now.

he mortgage is due. The kids are driving you crazy. You hate the way you look in underwear. You can’t seem to get your career to where you want it. You can’t afford the big holiday. Everywhere you turn there are reasons to feel stress and anxiety.

If happiness is eluding you, don’t panic. While we can’t give you a fool proof way to be in a blissed out state of happiness all the time, there are many ways to swerve off the path of anxiety, anger, frustration, and sadness into a state of happiness once or even several times throughout the day.

Here are 20 ideas to get you started. Choose the ones that work for you and ignore the ones that don’t suit. Try to incorporate two of these ideas into every day. And chill out: don’t let your search for happiness become another reason to stress.

#1 Go to sleep

We have become a nation of sleep-deprived citizens. Taking a daily nap or getting into bed at 8pm one night with a good book – and turning the light out an hour later – can do more for your mood and outlook on life than any number of bubble baths or massages.

#2 Hum along

Music soothes more than the savage beast. Studies find music activates parts of the brain that produce happiness – the same parts activated by food or sex. It’s also relaxing. In one study older adults who listened to their choice of music during outpatient eye surgery had significantly lower heart rates, blood pressure, and cardiac workload (that is, their heart didn’t have to work as hard) as those who had silent surgery.

#3 Laugh out loud

Yes, you might feel silly but this works. Just anticipating a happy, funny event can raise levels of endorphins and other pleasureinducing hormones and lower production of stress hormones.

Researchers at the University of California, Irvine, tested 16 men who all agreed they thought a certain videotape was funny. Half were told three days in advance they would watch it. They started experiencing biological changes right away. When they actually watched the video, their levels of stress hormones dropped significantly, while their endorphin levels rose 27 percent and their growth hormone levels (indicating benefit to the immune system) rose 87 percent.

#4 Make a list: There’s nothing like writing down your tasks to help you organise your thoughts and calm your anxiety.

Checking off each item provides a great sense of fulfillment.

#5 Declutter

It’s nearly impossible to meditate, breathe deeply, or simply relax when every surface is covered with papers and bills and magazines. Plus, the repetitive nature of certain cleaning tasks – such as wiping, sweeping, and scrubbing – can be meditative in and of itself if you focus on what you’re doing.

#16 Ignore the market

Eliminate activities that aren’t necessary and that you don’t enjoy. If there are enough people already to handle the school fete, or you’re feeling stressed by the thought of being secretary of the body corporate for yet another year, step down and let someone else handle things.

#7 Practice mindfulness

Be in the moment. Instead of worrying about tomorrow’s meeting while you have dinner with your family, focus on the here and now – the food, the company, the conversation.

#8 One thing at a time

Edward Suarez, Ph.D., associate professor of medical psychology at Duke University, found that people who multitask are more likely to have high blood pressure. Take that finding to heart. Instead of talking on the phone while you fold the washing or clean the kitchen, sit down in a comfortable chair and turn your entire attention over to the conversation.

#9 Tune out the news

For one day go without reading the newspaper, watching the news, or scanning the headlines online. Instead, take a holiday from the bad news we’re exposed to every day use that time for a walk, a meditation session, or read a good book.

#10 Garden

Not only will the fresh air and exercise provide their own stress reduction and feeling of wellbeing, but the sense of accomplishment that comes from clearing a weedy patch, watching seeds turn into flowers, or pruning out dead wood will last for hours, if not days.

#11 Walk the dog

There are numerous studies that attest to the stress-relieving benefits of pets. In one analysis researchers evaluated the heart health of 240 couples, half of whom owned a pet. Those couples with pets had significantly lower heart rates and blood pressure levels when exposed to stressors than the couples who did not have pets. In fact, the pets worked even better at buffering stress than the spouses did.

#12 Spend time alone

Although relationships are one of the best antidotes to stress, sometimes you need time alone to recharge and reflect. Take yourself out to lunch or to a movie, or simply spend an afternoon reading, browsing in a bookstore, or antiquing.

#13 Walk mindfully

You probably already know that exercise is better than medication for relieving anxiety and stress. But what you do with your mind while you’re walking can make your walk even more beneficial. In a study called the Ruth Stricker Mind/Body Study, researchers found that those walking at a slow pace while practicing “mindfulness,” a mental technique to bring about the relaxation response, in which the heart rate slows and blood pressure drops, showed significant declines in anxiety and had fewer negative and more positive feelings about themselves. Better yet, the effects were evident immediately.

#14 Visit a quiet place

Libraries, museums, gardens, and places of worship provide islands of peace and calm in today’s frantic world. Find a quiet place near your house and make it your secret getaway.

#15 Volunteer

Helping others enables you to put your own problems into perspective and also provides social interaction. While happy people are more likely to help others, helping others increases your happiness. One study found that volunteer work enhanced all six aspects of well-being: life satisfaction, self-esteem, happiness, sense of control over life, physical health, and depression.

Watching yet another report about the sliding property market or superannuation fund problems can be enough to send your blood pressure skyrocketing. In fact, Chinese researchers found a direct link between the daily performance of the stock market and the mental health of those who closely followed it. So stay on top of your investments and finances, but don’t obsess over them.

#17 Count your blessings People who pause each day to reflect on some positive aspect of their lives (their health, friends, family, freedom, education, etc.) experience a heightened sense of well-being.

#18 Prioritise relationships One study of more than 1300 men and women of various ages found that those who had a lot of supportive friends were much more likely to have healthier blood pressure, cholesterol levels, blood sugar metabolism, and stress hormone levels than those with two or fewer close friends. Studies also find that people who feel lonely, depressed, and isolated are three to five times more likely to get sick and die prematurely than those who have feelings of love, connection, and community.

#19 Scent the air Research shows that the benefits of aromatherapy in relieving stress are real. In one study people exposed to rosemary had lower anxiety levels, increased alertness, and performed math computations faster. Adults exposed to lavender showed an increase in the type of brain waves that suggest increased relaxation.

#20 Take care of the soul In study after study, actively religious people are happier and cope better with crises, according to David Myers, Ph.D., a professor of psychology at Hope College in Holland. For many people faith provides a support community, a sense of life’s meaning, feelings of ultimate acceptance, a reason to focus beyond yourself, and a timeless perspective on life’s woes. Even if you’re not religious, a strong spirituality may offer similar benefits.

re you one of those people who has big plans, but little follow through? Do you have a long list of things you just haven’t got around to? If so, you are not alone. A recent study out of the UK found that 93 percent of personal goals are not fulfilled. And the most common reasons were procrastination and lack of motivation. On the flip side, those who had a high level of success in achieving personal goals share one common trait: the ability to self motivate.

No surprise to Michael Locklear, a researcher and consultant with 30 years experience, studying health, nutrition, and human behaviour.

“What you occupy your mind with is of great importance to your physical and psychological health,” Michael says. “When you learn to gain control of your mind, you learn self motivation and can begin to take control of your life.”

This is all well and good, but just how do you get self motivation? Here are seven things you can easily do to increase your motivation.

Write Down Your Goals

Sit down and write out what you are trying to accomplish. Be as specific, clear, and concise as possible. Why do you really need to complete this project? Knowing what is important to you and being able to take pleasure in accomplishing tasks is an essential success skill.

A study conducted at Dominican University found that people who write down their goals beforehand are much more likely to follow through with them.

Make Your Goals Known to Others

Staying motivated is much easier when you have support from trusted friends and family. It can be difficult to keep on track without some kind of support network.

Telling people in your support network about your goals will help to motivate you. It will create a conflict in the way others see you if you don’t make progress. This will create stress which will motivate you to live up to others’ expectations.

The same study from Dominican University also found that those who were instructed to send their written goals to a supportive friend were even more successful than those who just wrote down their goals without confiding in anyone.

Visualise Yourself Completing the Goal

Visualisation is the process of creating a mental image or intention of what you desire to happen. By seeing yourself as happy and healthy, your mind and body will work together to make your image a reality.

Visualisation can relieve pain, speed healing, and help the body subdue hundreds of ailments, including depression, impotence, allergies, and asthma.

In a Harvard study, a group of people were told to visualise performing simple tasks in advance. Another group did not visualise the tasks. The group who visualised before taking action had a 100 percent efficiency 34 slim magazine summer 2013

rate, whereas those who didn’t had only a 56 percent efficiency rate.

Another study, conducted at Yale, demonstrated that patients suffering from depression were helped by imagining scenes in which they were praised by people they admired, a clear boost to their self esteem.

Sugar has been getting bad press lately and, apparently, for good reason. Leading naturopath Victoria O’Sullivan warns that sugar is a health-damaging “anti-nutrient”. In large amounts, sugar is known to trigger weight gain, destroy the health of our teeth and gums, cause energy slumps, raise the risk of heart disease, affect our immune system and indirectly lead to diabetes, she says. It can also cause premature aging because it causes a reaction in the body that triggers the production of molecules that can damage skin and organs.

To reduce your sugar intake try: Cutting down slowly on the amount you have in tea or coffee until you take it sugar free • Using a natural, not an artificial, sugar substitute like stevia • Getting your sugar fix through fresh fruit (not dried, that is sugar-laden) • Going for a walk when you feel tired or irritable, rather than reaching for a sugary snack.

Frozen vegetables can be better than fresh Fresh no longer means ‘just picked’ says nutritionist Catherine Saxelby, author of Nutrition For Life (Hardie Grant, $29.95). In fact they may have sat for days, weeks or months before you get around to eating them. That means their vitamin levels will have already declined. You may be better off with vegetables that have been frozen close to picking and then stashed in your freezer.

A little coffee is good Compared to non-coffee drinkers, coffee drinkers are less likely to have type 2 diabetes, Parkinson’s disease and dementia. And it’s said a coffee before your workout can help you burn more fat. Coffee drinkers may even have a lower risk of strokes.

Red meat is a good addition to your diet Always opting for fish? Sure, three servings of fish a week will supply valuable anti-inflammatory fats that are good for your heart, your joints and even your brain. But red meat is an important dietary source of zinc which promotes immune function and good digestion. Don’t go overboard, but do aim for three servings a week, preferably of lean, organic meats.

Bread and potatoes don’t have to be fattening Carbohydrate-rich foods have often been blamed for weight problems but the evidence points to sedentary lifestyles, eating out more frequently and too much of everything, says Saxelby. Often it is what is eaten with bread or the potato – butter, peanut butter, sour cream or cheese – that adds kilojoules, she says.

The good news is that both bread and potatoes are valuable foods that can contribute carbohydrates, fibre, vitamins and minerals. A balanced diet can include two or three slices of wholemeal bread a day and one potato. Go easy on the spreads!

Vegetables can save your bones Unfortunately many foods we commonly eat in the west push the blood to be more acidic and the body then draws on the calcium (as well as minerals like magnesium and potassium) in the bones to alkalise the blood. But eating lots of vegetables, including sea vegetables, is a great way to keep your blood alkaline.

Make sure you get plenty of servings every meal – tomatoes or rocket with breakfast, mixed salad greens or steamed vegetables at lunch and the same at dinner (even if it’s out of the freezer). And stock up on sea vegetables like kombu or nori, and sprinkle them over your meals, or use them in soups or casseroles.

That glass of wine may do you good Numerous international studies show a small glass of red wine – 120ml may be ideal – can help reduce your risk of heart disease. Cardiologist Dr Ross Walker cautions that, to get the benefits, you need to drink moderately, not excessively. Too much alcohol will increase your risk of every disease from diabetes to cancer.

Roast Vegetable & Chickpea Salad with Dill Yoghurt Dressing Serves: 2 Prep Time: 25mins Cooking Time: 35mins 1 400g can chickpeas, drained ¼ cup parsley 250g peeled pumpkin, thinly sliced 1 medium red capsicum, coarsely chopped 2 medium zucchini, coarsely chopped 1g olive oil spray 1 cup low fat natural yoghurt 2 teaspoons fresh dill 1 clove garlic, crushed 1 teaspoon lemon zest, finely grated

Serves: 2 Prep time: 10mins

4 slices char-grilled eggplant 4 slices char-grilled capsicum 130g reduced fat ricotta 1 tablespoon chives, chopped 2 slices wholemeal mountain bread 1 cup mushrooms, sliced Pat dry the eggplant and capsicum to remove any excess oil. Tear the capsicum into thick strips. Combine the ricotta and chives in a small bowl. Spread over the mountain bread. Season with pepper. Top with the eggplant, capsicum and mushrooms. Roll up to enclose.

Michelle’s Tips:

For your convenience, purchase the eggplant and capsicum from the supermarket (usually in jars) and pat dry with paper towels to remove any oil that they may be stored in. If you have the time, it’s cheaper (and easy) to prepare them yourself.

To prepare the eggplant, simply cut into slices. Spray with oil and char-grill a few minutes each side until golden and tender.

To prepare capsicum, roast whole in a 200C oven for 45 minutes or until the skin is charred. Transfer to a plastic bag and set aside to cool before peeling off the skin and removing the seeds.

Preheat oven to 200C. Place the pumpkin, capsicum and zucchini in a large baking dish. Spray with oil and toss to coat. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until tender. Set aside to cool slightly.

Combine the yoghurt with 2-3 tablespoons of water to make a dressing.

Stir in the dill, garlic and lemon rind. Season with pepper.

Combine the vegetables and chickpeas. Divide between serving plates.

Drizzle with the dressing and sprinkle with the parsley.

Michelle’s Tips:

A n easy way to crush garlic is to cut the clove in half, leaving the skin on. Place in the garlic crusher, cut side down. After crushing simply scoop the skin out for easy cleaning.

D ouble or triple this recipe to make lunch for the week ahead.

You can use novelty shaped dishes for the kids, just for laughs!

To get the panna cotta out of the ramekins, tilt the ramekin on the side and gently use your finger to pull the panna cotta away from the edge of the ramekin. This will create an air pocket.

Continue to gently turn the ramekin the whole way round and the panna cotta should fall from the mould with ease.

Michelle’s Tips:

T o remove pomegranate kernels, cut the pomegranate in half, then half again and place in a large bowl of water (this is to avoid the juice splattering). Use your hands to break open the fruit and pull out the kernels, discarding any white membrane. Pour mixture through a fine strainer and you’ve got your kernels!

If pomegranate is unavailable, replace with 1 tablespoon of Craisins (dried cranberries) or currants.

Spray five (125ml/½ cup) dariole moulds lightly with the oil spray. Stir the milk and sugar in a medium saucepan over medium-low heat until the sugar dissolves. Pour into a large jug.

Place 2 tablespoons of hot water in a small heatproof dish or ramekin.

Place the dish in a small saucepan and add enough boiling water to come half-way up the sides of the dish. Sprinkle the gelatine over the water in the dish. Stir until the gelatine dissolves.

Whisk the gelatine into the milk mixture. Add the yoghurt and whisk until well combined. Pour into the greased moulds. Place in the fridge for 3 hours or until set.

Run a flat bladed knife around the edge of the moulds and turn the panna cotta onto serving plates. Serve with the berries.

“I love panna cotta so I just had to create a healthy version. Yum! They take about three hours to set, so you will just have to wait!”

Warm Lamb, Pumpkin & Pomegranate Salad with mint Yoghurt Dressing Serves: 2 Prep time: 15 mins Cooking time: 40mins

Preheat oven to 200C. Place the pumpkin and eggplant on a baking tray.

Spray with oil. Bake for 30 minutes or until light golden.

Meanwhile, finely chop half the mint. Coarsely tear the remaining mint leaves. Combine the yoghurt, garlic, finely chopped mint and 2 tablespoons of water. Season with pepper.

Heat a frying pan over medium-high heat. Spray the lamb with oil and season with salt and pepper. Add the lamb and cook for 4-5 minutes each side for medium or until cooked to your liking. Transfer to a plate and cover with foil. Set aside for 2 minutes to rest. Thinly slice.

Place the lentils, cucumber, pomegranate kernels, parsley, remaining mint and the warm pumpkin and eggplant in a large bowl. Season with salt and pepper. Toss gently to combine. Divide between serving dishes and top with the lamb. Drizzle with the dressing.

he coconut water craze is showing no signs of slowing down. And with good reason. Although there are no miracles when it comes to health and fitness, coconut water is one fad which does have merit.

The aim is to have fun so pack food that is delicious and simple to serve.

Use a cool bag and ice-block. Or freeze drinks and use them as ice-blocks, by the time you reach your destination they should be drinkable.

#5. Keep it clean

Take plastic bags and wet wipes.

And of course, get rid of your own rubbish.

Easy Chicken Pitas 2 chicken breast fillets 1 fresh or dried bay leaf 1 large carrot, coarsely grated handful fresh mint, chopped 1 bunch salad onions, thinly sliced (substitute for one large white onion if needed) 75g radishes, thinly sliced ½ cup mayonnaise (full or low fat) 8 pita breads Lettuce leaves Place the chicken breasts in a pan large enough to accommodate them both snugly in the bottom. Cover with water, add the bay leaf and bring to the boil. Lower the heat and simmer very gently for 10 minutes or until thoroughly cooked and there is no pink meat when pierced with the tip of a knife. Then turn off the heat and leave to cool completely in the poaching liquid.

Remove the cooled chicken from the liquid and shred into small pieces. Toss pieces with the carrot, mint, salad onions and radishes.

Add the mayonnaise and mix together until the salad is evenly coated then chill in the fridge until ready to serve.

Split open the pitas. Tuck a lettuce leaf into each pita to line it then spoon in the chicken mixture and serve.

Asparagus & Goat’s Cheese Tart 1 x 230g sheet shortcrust pastry, thawed 230g (approx) bunch asparagus, trimmed 130g goat’s cheese, cubed 4 eggs 150ml cream 3 teaspoons chopped chives Preheat the oven to 200ºC. Unroll the pastry sheet and line a 23cm loose-bottomed flan tin with it, trimming the excess to fit. Prick with a fork. Chill in the fridge for 10 minutes then line with a crumpled sheet of greaseproof paper over the pastry and weigh it down with baking beans or rice grains. Bake blind for 10 minutes then remove the beans or rice and paper and return to the oven for a further 5 minutes.

Meanwhile steam the asparagus for 4–5 minutes until just tender.

Drain and run under cold water. Pat dry with kitchen paper and cut into 5cm lengths. Arrange over the base of the pastry case and scatter over the cubed goat’s cheese.

Whisk together the eggs, cream and chives. Season the mixture and pour into the pastry case. Bake for 30–35 minutes until the filling is set and the top golden. Serve warm or cold with a salad.

Beetroot & Ham Salad 1 bunch beetroot (about 5–6), trimmed 2 tbsp olive oil 50g blue cheese, crumbled 3 tbsp sour cream 1 tbsp fresh tarragon, chopped 50g low fat ham, torn into large pieces 60g rocket and spinach (substitute for your preferred green leaves) Preheat oven to 220ºC. Wrap each beetroot in foil, place in a roasting tin and bake for 30–40 minutes until tender. Unwrap and then cut into quarters.

Meanwhile, mix the cheese, sour cream, tarragon, oil and seasoning.

Toss with the warm beetroot. Arrange the ham and salad on plates and top with the beetroot. Serve with a walnut bread or herb bread.

Berry & Cherry Bars 150g unsalted butter, cut into cubes 75g brown Muscovado sugar 3 tbsp clear honey 250g rolled oats 170g dried cranberries, berries and cherries 50g roasted chopped hazelnuts Preheat the oven to 180°C. Place the butter, sugar and honey in a medium pan and heat gently, stirring occasionally, until the butter has melted and the sugar has dissolved.

Remove from heat and stir in the oats, dried fruit and nuts. Press the mixture into a lightly greased 30cm x 20cm x 4cm rectangular non-stick tin and bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes, until golden brown.

Allow to cool in the tin for five minutes, then score lightly with a knife into 12 bars. Leave the bars to cool completely in the tin before removing. The bars can be stored in an airtight container for up to four days.

Move over blueberries, make way cranberries, there’s a new super berry in town. It’s the goji, and it sure does pack a wellbeing punch.

oji berries are the next big thing, the latest craze, reported as the miracle cure for everything from sexual impotence to acne to cancer. But is it all just hot air, or is the goji as good as it sounds?

what is it?

Gojis have been used for medicinal purposes for close to 6,000 years in parts of Asia. The goji grows in areas of Tibet, Mongolia, China as well as the Himalayas, where they consume it fresh, but here in Australia we are only likely to encounter goji in dried or juice forms. The goji berry (in dried form) is a shriveled red berry with a slightly tart-sweet taste similar to a cranberry.

What can it do?

What can’t it do? Goji berries have a very impressive track record for improving health says naturopath and nutritionist Cathy Wong.

“Goji contains nineteen amino acids, twenty one minerals and is the richest natural repository of carotenoids. Besides being rich source of protein, it also contains vitamin A, vitamin B complex, vitamin C and vitamin E. It also contains essential fatty acids, Cyperone, Solavetivone, Physalin, Polysaccharides and Betaine,” Cathy says.

“Goji berries have been used for thousands of years in China, Tibet and India to protect the liver, preserve eyesight, improve circulation, and promote longevity. A recent study found that this superfood may also help shield the brain from Alzheimer’s disease.”

The antioxidants in gojis can help fight various types of cancer by increasing the number of red and white blood cells, platelets and even aid in the growth of stem cells which is especially beneficial when fighting bone marrow diseases such as Leukemia. These antioxidants also promote the production of collagen for youthful, firm skin.

Goji are used as an aid to improve eyesight, circulation and immune function, increase longevity, treat liver and kidney conditions, lower cholesterol as well as other functions.

The generous amount of Polysacchrides in gojis help maintain healthy blood sugar levels. This function is especially important for those at risk for diabetes and for those who may suffer from high blood pressure and the complications which often come with the two conditions. Please note that if you take diabetes and blood pressure drugs you must discuss using goji berries with your health practitioner due to possible interaction.

Goji juice Traditionally, goji berries were eaten as raw, brewed into herbal tea or soups to extract its medicinal values. These days it is also available in the form of goji juice, but Cathy Wong says the jury is still out on the benefits of the juice.

“There have been several test tube studies that show that goji extracts may prevent the growth of cancer cells, reduce blood glucose, and lower cholesterol levels. However, that doesn’t necessary mean that goji will have the same benefits when taken as a juice or tea.”

Best way to eat Goji G oji berries can be used just like raisins. You can add them to breakfast cereals, biscuits, slices or just eat them straight. They can also be added as a topping for yogurt and ice cream.

T he berries will usually be found in dried form but if you want a plumper berry heat them in a bowl of water in the microwave for one minute and then let them sit there for about 10 minutes. This will help to reconstitute the berries and make them closer to what they would have been like when they were ripe.

T ea is a great way to get the antioxidants that goji berries have to offer. The berries can be used to make hot or cold tea by steeping them for fifteen minutes before drinking.

A dding goji berries in soup is a traditional Chinese way to eat the goji. You can mash them or blend them before putting them into the soup.

G oji berries can also be added to trail mix. The berries have a nutty flavour and not a fruity flavour so adding goji berries will add another delicious nutty taste element to the mix.

Hair I Nails Beauty

Skin sense Gojis are also said to be excellent for soothing a number of skin conditions including eczema, psoriasis and skin allergies. Soak dried goji berries in warm water for an hour, drain then mix into a paste. Rub on the afflicted area. Alternatively soak goji berries in warm water for an hour, then put the water and berries in a blender to make a goji liquid. Add the liquid to your bathwater before soaking in it.

Grow your own Goji berry plant If you would like to have fresh goji berries, and you are a bit of a green thumb, why not grow your own? It’s a lot easier than you think, and if you don’t have a big garden, don’t worry; you can do this in a large pot.

1. Choose a site to plant your goji berries. They thrive in full sunshine but will still grow in partial shade. They need a pH of approximately 7.0 and a small fence or trellis for them to grow onto.

2. Place a couple of goji berries in a damp paper towel for one to two hours.

3. Slice the berries in half with a knife and remove the seeds.

4. Plant the seeds in ½-inch deep topsoil and then add some organic liquid fertilizer.

5. Water plants lightly twice a week with a garden hose until they become stabilised. From then water once a week.

6. Prune as needed to keep the goji berry plant from shading itself too much.

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic condition. This means it lasts for a long time, often for someone’s whole life. For our bodies to work properly we need to convert glucose (sugar) from our food into energy. A hormone called insulin is essential for this conversion of glucose into energy.

In people with diabetes, insulin is no longer produced or not produced in sufficient amounts by the body, so when people with diabetes eat glucose, which is in everyday foods such as breads, cereals, fruit and starchy vegetables, legumes, milk, yoghurt and sweets, it can’t be converted into energy. Instead, the glucose stays in the blood. Your blood glucose level is called glycaemia.

Having too much sugar in the blood (known as hyperglycemia) can cause serious health problems if it’s not treated. It can damage the vessels that supply blood to vital organs, which can increase the risk of heart disease and stroke, kidney disease, vision problems, and nerve problems.

Type 1 Diabetes

In type 1 diabetes the pancreas, a large gland behind the stomach, stops making insulin. Without insulin, the body’s cells cannot turn glucose (sugar), into energy and burns its own fats as a substitute. Unless treated with daily injections of insulin, people with type 1 diabetes accumulate dangerous chemical substances in their blood from the burning of fat. This is potentially life threatening if not treated. To stay alive, people with type 1 diabetes depend on up to four insulin injections every day. They must test their blood glucose levels several times daily. The onset of type 1 diabetes typically occurs in people under 30 years, but can occur at any age. About 10-15% of all cases of diabetes are type 1.

Cause of Type 1 Diabetes

The exact cause of type 1 diabetes is not yet known, but we do know it has a strong family link and cannot be prevented. We also know that it has nothing to do with lifestyle, although maintaining a healthy lifestyle is very important in helping to manage type 1 diabetes. At this stage nothing can be done to prevent or cure type 1 diabetes.

Symptoms of Type 1 Diabetes

• Being excessively thirsty • Passing more urine • Having cuts that heal slowly • Feeling tired and lethargic • Always feeling hungry • Unexplained weight loss • Itching, skin infections • Mood swings • Headaches • Feeling dizzy • Leg cramps • Blurred vision.

It is estimated that up to 60% of type 2 diabetes can be prevented. overweight or obesity, insufficient physical activity, poor diet and the classic ‘apple shape’ body where extra weight is carried around the waist.

Type 2 diabetes can often initially be managed with healthy eating and regular physical activity. However, over time most people with type 2 diabetes will also need tablets and many will also need insulin. It is important to note that this is just the natural progression of the disease, and taking tablets or insulin as soon as they are required can result in fewer complications in the long-term.

Cause of Type 2 Diabetes

While there is no single cause of type 2 diabetes, there are well-established risk factors. Some of these can be changed and some cannot. You are at a higher risk of getting type 2 diabetes if you: • have a family history of diabetes • are older (over 55 years) – the risk increases as we age • are over 45 years of age and are overweight • are over 45 years of age and have high blood pressure • are over 35 years of age and are from an Aboriginal or a Torres Strait Islander background • are over 35 years of age and are from Pacific Island, Indian subcontinent or Chinese cultural background • are a woman who has given birth to a child over 4.5 kgs (9 lbs), or had gestational diabetes when pregnant, or had a condition known as polycystic ovarian syndrome.

Symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes

In type 2 diabetes, many people have no symptoms at all, while other signs are dismissed as a part of ‘getting older’.

By the time type 2 diabetes is diagnosed, the complications of diabetes may already be present. The symptoms of type 2 diabetes can be the same as the symptoms for type 1 diabetes, with the added symptom of gradual weight gain.

It is estimated that up to 60% of type 2 diabetes can be prevented. People at risk of type 2 diabetes can delay and even prevent this disease by following a healthy lifestyle.

This includes: • Maintaining a healthy weight • Regular physical activity • Making healthy food choices • Managing blood pressure • Managing cholesterol levels • Not smoking.

While there is currently no cure for type 1 diabetes, the disease can be managed through maintaining a healthy lifestyle, regular blood glucose testing and insulin replacement through lifelong insulin injections (up to six every day).

The aim of treating your diabetes is to keep blood glucose levels as close to ‘normal’ as possible.

Type 2 is the most common form of diabetes, affecting 85-90% of all people with diabetes. While it usually affects older adults, more and more younger people, even children, are getting type 2 diabetes. In type 2 diabetes, the pancreas makes some insulin but it is not produced in the amount your body needs and it does not work effectively.

Type 2 diabetes results from a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Although there is a strong genetic predisposition, the risk is greatly increased when associated with lifestyle factors such as high blood pressure,

Eating well with diabetes To help manage your diabetes, your meals need to be regular and spread evenly throughout the day, lower in fat (particularly saturated fat), based on high fibre carbohydrate foods such as wholegrain breads and cereals, beans, lentils, vegetables and fruits.

Along with healthy eating, regular physical activity can help you to manage your blood glucose levels, reduce your blood fats (cholesterol and triglycerides) and maintain a healthy weight.

Fat

Fats have the highest energy (kilojoule or calorie) content of all foods.

Eating too much fat can make you put on weight, which may make it more difficult to manage blood glucose levels. While it is important to try and reduce fat in your diet, especially if you are trying to lose weight, some fat is good for health.

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrate foods are the best energy source for your body. When they are digested they break down to form glucose in the bloodstream. Insulin takes the glucose out of the blood and deposits it into the muscles, liver and other cells in the body where it is used to provide energy. If you eat regular meals and spread your carbohydrate foods evenly throughout the day, you will help maintain your energy levels without causing large rises in your blood glucose levels.

The glycemic index or GI is a way of describing how a carbohydrate containing food affects blood glucose levels. The type of carbohydrate you eat is very important as some can cause higher blood glucose after eating. The best combination is to eat moderate amounts of carbohydrate and include high fibre foods that also have a low GI.

Saturated Fat It is important to limit saturated fat because it raises your LDL (‘bad’) cholesterol levels. Saturated fat is found in animal foods like fatty meat, milk, butter and cheese. Vegetable fats that are saturated include palm oil (found in solid cooking fats, snack foods or convenience foods) and coconut products such as copha, coconut milk or cream.

Polyunsaturated & Monounsaturated Fats Eating small amounts of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats can help ensure you get the essential fatty acids and vitamins your body needs.

Polyunsaturated fats include: Polyunsaturated margarines (check the label for the word ‘polyunsaturated’), Sunflower, safflower, soybean, corn, cottonseed, grapeseed and sesame oils, the fat found in oily fish such as herring, mackerel, sardine, salmon and tuna.

Monounsaturated fats include: Canola® and olive oils, some margarines, and avocado.

Seeds, nuts, nut spreads and peanut oil contain a combination of both polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fat.

Protein

Choose protein foods that are also low in fat. This will help to reduce the amount of saturated fat you eat. Protein foods include lean meat, poultry without the skin, seafood, eggs (not fried), unsalted nuts, soy products such as tofu and pulses (dried beans and lentils).

Very low carbohydrate diets are not recommended for people with diabetes.

Sugar

A healthy eating plan for diabetes can include some sugar. However, it is important to consider the nutritional value of the foods you eat. In general, foods with added sugars should be consumed sparingly (manufacturers sometimes use fruit juice or other sources of sugar to avoid using table sugar). In particular, high energy foods such as sweets, lollies and standard soft drinks should not be consumed on a regular basis.

Some sugar may also be used in cooking and many recipes can be modified to use less than the amount stated or substituted with an alternative sweetener. Select recipes that are low in fat (particularly saturated fat) and contain some fibre.

Beachbody Warmer weather is here and that means the beach can become your workout zone.

W

hat’s not to love about the beach? It’s free, it’s scenic and its golden stretches of sand are ideal for long walks, sand-running, or even a bit of yoga.

Organise a ball game, walk the dog – or someone else’s, help the children build a sandcastle, or plan a run or rock climb … it all adds up to more fat-busting exercise and fun.

The beach is also an ideal place for group sports like volleyball, or soccer, as long as you consider other beachgoers.

in the water Deep water running is a bit like aqua aerobics. You’ll need a flotation belt (found at sports stores). Wearing the belt, you then walk or run in water, making sure you are deep enough so that your feet don’t touch the bottom. It’s great resistance exercise, ideal for toning muscles and burning kilojoules.

If you don’t fancy going out too deep, walking through the water at waist height is also a good resistance exercise. Just go back and forth along the shoreline.

Swimming laps is terrific exercise if you’re a strong swimmer – otherwise you may want to try this one at the pool. It works your heart, tones your muscles and increases flexibility.

Body boarding is easy, fun and good cardiovascular exercise.

Surfing is fantastic for building upper and lower body strength as well as stamina.

on the sand Walk the shoreline at a brisk pace – aim for an effort of six out of 10. Stand up straight, keep your abdominals muscles tight, and stride from the hips. Try not to walk on a slope, which can be a problem for those who have lower back trouble.

Go for a sand jog or run. You’ll tone your butt.

Do tai chi or yoga on the beach, at sunrise or sunset. You’ll not only feel zen, you’ll reduce the amount of stress-hormone you produce in your body and that helps to cut down on the amount of fat that you store.

How about throwing a basketball, or even a medicine ball, back and forth with a friend? Or kick a soccer ball with the kids. You’ll improve your co-ordination and get an aerobic workout.

Helping children build a sandcastle – including ferrying sand for the structure, or water for the moat – is a good way to get gentle, relaxing exercise and to spend time bonding with loved ones.

Don’t forget safety If you are going to work out in the ocean, always do so at a patrolled beach. You will also need to be alert to other potential hazards, such as bluebottles, or even sharks. If you are in any doubt about the safety of the beach, talk to a lifeguard before you enter the water.

Don’t forget sunblock too and, if you do intend to workout outdoors, don’t make it between 11am and 2pm when the sun is at its hottest.

If your dog is part of your beach workout regime, make sure that the beach is dog friendly and don’t forget to pick up any waste.

They say love don’t cost a thing, but what about health?

here are plenty of reports that will tell you there are links between your health and your financial status. But is it that simple? If you live a healthier life are you really going to end up with more money? The answer is yes.

And no. In the short term it may actually set you back financially to live a healthy lifestyle, but the long-term benefits seem to outweigh those initial costs.

According to research conducted as part of the Australian Dietary Guidelines, food groups with more nutrients are more expensive. Meat, fruit and vegetables may be better for you, but sweets and salty snacks are inexpensive in comparison.

The cost of healthy food is also increasing at a higher rate than less nutritious choices. From the year 2000 to 2006 the Consumer Price Index for food in Brisbane increased by 32.5 percent while a basket of healthy food increased by 50 percent across Queensland.

A study showed that a welfare dependant family making healthy diet choices would use 40 percent of their income, while it would use 20 percent of an average family’s income. But those choices can make you less likely to need healthcare at a later date and, according to American research, you might even live longer.

The top 5 percent of income earners were shown to live 25 percent longer than those in the lowest 5 percent of earners.

And there’s a cyclic nature of poor health for the long-term unemployed according to results from the Australian Bureau of Statistics Health Survey (2007-08), where long-term unemployed are four times more likely to be in poor health. According to those statistics it works two-fold, poor health can lead to unemployment, but the financial and psychological stress resulting from unemployment can lead to poor health.

The cycle doesn’t stop with you either, adults aren’t the only ones who suffer as a result of financial burden. The Australian Social Trends report released earlier this year showed the employment status of a child’s parents played a part in their likelihood to participate in organised sport and dancing. According to the statistics children with two parents employed were 18 percent more likely to participate, 13 percent are less likely if neither parent is employed and 20 percent are less likely in single parent families. The cost of these activities (such as transport and fees) are likely factors in these statistics.

Top Tips When money pressures are weighing down on your shoulders, the last thing you feel like doing is heading to the gym to lift the physical version. Plus, the gym costs money. But there are some ways we can keep a healthy balance without breaking the budget according to an article by Pamela Yellen and Dean Rotbart for Bank On Yourself.

G et more sleep. Many people try to cram in more activities in exchange for a good night sleep. The result however can lead to high blood pressure, impaired concentration or type 2 diabetes. It’s still recommended you get 7-8 hours per night.

G ot milk? No? Well you should. You need vitamin D, ideally 800-1,000 international units (IU) per day. A glass of milk has 125 IU. But you can also try yoghurt, cheese, salmon, almonds and fortified orange juice. A lack of vitamin D is linked to osteoporosis, depression and chronic fatigue.

R elax. Living a stressful life leads to more heart attacks and strokes. It doesn’t mean you need to quit your job, just take a break. Go for a walk, listen to some music, do yoga. A stroll through the park won’t cost you a cent and you’ll be able to soak in some of that vitamin D. W ash your hands. There are plenty of germs on stairwells, elevator buttons and door handles to name only a few objects you can pick something up from. So wash your hands more often with hand sanitiser or warm soap and water to avoid needing trips to the doctor or days off work.

E ncourage your boss. No, we don’t mean you need to give the boss a round of applause every time they walk in. Encourage them to look at the wellbeing of employees. A survey by Principal Financial Group has shown that employers who offer wellness programs increase employee productivity, attendance and retention. So you’ll be at work, happier and healthier, more often.

Clinical comparisons in weight loss surgery Key comparisons to make when assessing one weight loss surgery clinic over another.

ith soaring overweight and obesity rates, and overexposure to conventional diet and exercise programs that don’t work, more and more people are turning to weight loss surgery clinics to permanently end their battle with weight and conflict with food. But, what exactly should you be looking for when comparing weight loss surgery clinics?

Weight loss surgery is fast becoming recognised as the most formidable form of treatment for weight-related complications, such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and sleep apnoea. It has also been linked with longer life expectancy and better quality of life; and, these days, laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery procedures like gastric sleeve surgery and lap band surgery are more accessible and affordable than ever before.

A range of financial options, like early release of superannuation funds, low interest payment plans, private health funds, and even home loans, are being accessed to assist those determined to improve their quality of life and longevity sooner rather than later.

If controlling your weight has become unmanageable, weight loss surgery may be an option, but choosing the right procedure and health practitioners is essential to your success.

health & fitness The process of losing weight following lap band surgery is exactly that-a process-so it’s imperative that a patient’s journey is well managed by both the patient and their clinical support team.

There are a number of weight loss surgery clinics these days; however, it pays to do your research in assessing key elements of experience, knowledge, and level of care of the service provider when comparing clinics. Of course, you need to make sure you always consider the expertise and experience of the surgeon, but don’t neglect the knowledge and level of care available through the clinic’s support team. A team that works collaboratively in managing a patient’s journey from their pre-surgery stage to the weight loss goal stage is in most cases the key contributor to patient success. Ideally, that team should include a dietitian, bariatric nurse, psychologist, and, in some cases, an exercise physiologist. This multidisciplinary approach is widely advocated across all spectrums of the weight loss surgery industry.

Fortunately, complications or risks associated with weight loss surgery, particularly gastric sleeve and gastric band procedures, are generally rare and not life-threatening. Complication rates are around 0.5% for gastric band and around 1% for gastric sleeve. So, whilst this is an important consideration in assessing risks of surgery versus the long-term risks of not doing something about your weight problem, it’s the skill set of the multidisciplinary support team that is critical in helping patients make and maintain cognitive and behavioural changes essential to achieving good long-term results.

There are surgeons who neglect the value of such collaborative team work, either because they believe surgery is the ‘be all and end all of it’ and they can personally manage certain aspects of the patient’s journey; or, such services come at an extra cost, which the surgeon then has to pass on to the patient by increasing their fees or outsourcing to third party allied health professionals. The problem with outsourcing is the potential for a breakdown in communication between members of the support team and, therefore, potential disconnection for the patient from the team-like approach. This may leave the patient feeling alienated; so, they become detached from the process and their goals.

Outsourcing also means you may not necessarily be getting a dietitian or psychologist, for example, who work rather specifically within the weight loss surgery industry. Just like not all general surgeons can perform weight loss surgery, not all dietitians and psychologists understand behaviours and implications associated with weight loss surgery.

Understanding behavioural traits associated with eating, exercise, and substance use, for example, including attitudes towards these, helps to assess suitability for a particular weight loss procedure and assists the patient and health professional in formulating strategies for an improvement in health-related behaviours and better weight loss results.

It is equally important for the support team to assess such things as a patient’s general coping skills and knowledge or capacity in understanding the implications of weight loss surgery. An experienced in-house clinical team helps to address these issues and a surgeon who takes responsibility for ensuring appropriate support is available in their clinic to all of their patients. Weight loss is a holistic process and appropriate support must be easily accessible.

As an example, I often meet people who have had lap band surgery but were not afforded appropriate pre and post-operative care by their surgeon. As a result, they have either struggled to lose weight or have had an unpleasant experience, including excessive vomiting, because the entire process has been mismanaged. The process of losing weight following lap band surgery is exactly that - a process - so it’s imperative that a patient’s journey is well managed by both the patient and their clinical support team.

Gastric sleeve surgery is a little less complicated with regard to postoperative management, but nonetheless equally demanding in respect to a clinician assessing patient suitability and the patient making significant and sustainable lifestyle changes. Ultimately, having an experienced and knowledgeable team to guide you through the process of weight loss surgery could be the key difference in ensuring you permanently end your battle with weight.

When comparing one weight loss surgeon over another, you may want to extend your comparisons to that of one entire clinic over another.

Here are some suggestions for you to consider.

Experience Counts: How many weight loss surgery procedures has the surgeon or clinic done overall? How many gastric band vs gastric sleeve procedures? And, how many years have they been in the business?

Complication Rates: What is the surgeon’s complication rate with both gastric band and gastric sleeve surgery and what is the process for treating such complications?

Diversity: Does the clinic/surgeon offer a variety of solutions for sustainable weight loss? A clinic that offers a number of options appreciates that weight loss is not a ‘one size fits all’ process and that it’s important to make both clinical and patient-centred considerations.

Support Team: Does the clinic have a multidisciplinary support team and who are they? Are they in-house or outsourced professionals? And, what support program do they offer their patients before and after surgery?

Information Sessions: Find out if the clinic runs information sessions where you can meet the clinical team and learn more. A clinic active in promoting themselves and their services this way has confidence in their ability to convey information with sensitive consideration for those suffering from the effects of obesity.

Research: Assess how involved a clinic or particular surgeon is in research.

Are they credited in articles and publications? Is the clinic/surgeon perhaps associated with clinical trials? Either shows a commitment to research and innovation in the area of weight loss surgery.

Website: How informative is the clinic’s website? Is it easy to find the information you’re looking for? Is the clinic endorsed by a number of supply partners or industry professionals?

Testimonials: Get online and tap into some forums and blogs on the subject of weight loss surgery and get a feel for what people are saying. Also check out the clinic’s website for patient testimonials.

Social Media: Facebook is a great way to connect with a particular clinic and its followers. An active clinic appreciates their contribution to the cause, and the contribution past patients make to the journey of prospective patients.

Your GP: Ask your doctor who they would suggest and don’t be afraid to ask why. GPs are a great resource and are well informed regarding what’s happening in the medical community.

Price: When making price comparisons it’s best to take into account all of the above, but in general you can’t put a price on improvements to quality of life, especially when you cost out your failed diets and weight loss attempts to date.

Katrina started her career as a beauty therapist in the mid 1980s where she studied in Europe, and developed an early interest in a deeper level of understanding of skin, rather than just beauty and makeup. “I found (beauty therapists in Europe) to be well advanced compared to Australia. Many years later when I was working for the Terry White Pharmacy Group, I remember Rhonda White telling me that we were at the dawn of a new era in skincare formulation when we would see pharmacology and cosmetics blended.

“In 2000 I decided to upgrade my qualifications and undertook further study in advanced clinical skin assessment, cosmetic chemistry and advanced treatment modalities in order to offer an advanced clinic that sits between beauty therapy and dermatology.”

kipping breakfast is a common habit for many people and has been found to go hand in hand with other unhealthy lifestyle behaviours, such as low physical activity and eating take away food more often.

It is also linked to higher weight and waist circumference, and poorer diet quality. On the contrary, those who eat breakfast regularly are more likely to be a healthy weight and meet recommended intake of nutrients.

There is some evidence that eating breakfast offers unique benefits over other meals by affecting metabolic hormones and appetite later in the day. A study published in the journal Nutrition investigated healthy men who regularly ate breakfast and the impact it had on their hormones, metabolism and appetite. Skipping breakfast was found to cause greater insulin resistance in response to foods consumed later in the morning; and, appetite regulating hormones like ghrelin were more stable when breakfast was consumed.

Another study looked at the long-term effects of skipping breakfast in over 2000 Australian kids back in 1985, and then again in 2004-2006.

They found those who skipped breakfast in both childhood and adulthood had a larger waist circumference and higher fasting insulin, total cholesterol, and LDL cholesterol than those who ate breakfast.

A breakfast rich in fibre and protein can have a positive impact on appetite, and is a great opportunity to get a decent proportion of your daily nutritional intake. As an example, adults need 25-30 grams of fibre a day and most Australians are not getting enough. Wholegrain, such as oats or grainy bread with baked beans, high fibre cereals, and fruit, are all great sources of dietary fibre. Including a source of protein at breakfast can offer additional benefits to your sense of satiety and appetite regulation. By adding milk or a dollop of yoghurt, plus a few nuts, to a bowl of oats or muesli; or, by including a piece of grainy bread with an egg or baked beans, one can easily add a source of protein to their diet at breakfast. Keep in mind portion sizes are very important. It doesn’t take a large meal to get the metabolic benefits from breakfast; a small, well balanced meal is the way to go.

People who are not in the habit of eating breakfast daily find it hard to start eating breakfast more regularly. They may not feel hungry or stress that they cannot stomach food early in the morning. On the other hand, those who have a regular breakfast habit, find it hard to leave the house without it.

Many of those people who skip breakfast consume a large energy intake in the afternoon and evening. To help prepare yourself for a new habit of eating breakfast daily, make sure your dinner the night before is not too large and avoid eating after dinner. Breakfast doesn’t need to be a big meal; and, starting with a liquid option for breakfast, such as a fruit smoothie, can be easier to stomach. You can work on increasing variety over time. For those who forget, or complain they never have time for breakfast, there are lots of strategies to remind you to eat breakfast. Setting reminders on your phone for every morning at a specific time helps, so does taking out the breakfast bowl and box of cereal, for example, the night before. This way it’s the first thing you see on the table or kitchen counter in the morning. Regarding not having time to eat breakfast, consider what you don’t have time for today you’ll have to find time for later in life, including a growing waistline. A smoothie prepared on the spot or the night before, to have on the way to work or at work, if you’re really pushed for time, may just be what you need to get you going. yms. They’re all pretty much the same, right? Rows and rows of equipment, an exercise room or two, and a few personal trainers; that’s the formula. Well it might be for most gyms, but The Healthy Lifestyle Club (HLC) on the Gold Coast has taken a different approach, a more holistic and inclusive approach, and created a boutique health club experience like no other.

“We wanted to design something different, something unique,” says Marco Renai, who along with business partner Scott Corrigan owns and operates HLC. Marco’s wife Amber designed the club herself.

“It doesn’t look like any other gym or fitness centre. There is a beautiful tea bar with a big communal table, and it has a really rustic, vintage look and feel,” Marco says.

“The gym is really functional and well-equipped and there is a beautiful timber yoga and Pilates room; that’s a really special space. There is a also a new spin class room that our members love. The whole centre is designed to work as a community. We want people to feel connected to the fitness experts here, and to other members.

“When people sign up they receive a health assessment and personal training session,” Marc says. “That means they start off on the right foot.

We also have someone servicing the floor of the gym, like a restaurant maitre d’, walking the floor, making sure everyone has what they need, answering questions members might have.

“We have education sessions every month as well, like nutritional talks, or cooking classes. They are really well-received. And we also have lots of events. Different ways to get together and get active, like runs or walks.

Then every season we have a party, just to celebrate. It’s a great way for the members and staff to get together.”

Chantal Watt has been a member at HLC for two-and-a-half years, and says the community feel of the club is part of the reason she keeps coming back – and credits the club with her fitness success.

“The club offers everything I need,” she says. “A gym, classes, personal trainers, physio, and a dietitian,” Chantal says. “The services are great, but best of all is the feeling you get when you are in there. It sounds a bit corny maybe but you do feel really supported in there, like the staff genuinely care about you and what you are trying to achieve.

“It’s a beautiful space as well, it doesn’t feel like an ordinary gym. There is a big communal table and it’s a great place to talk informally with the trainers and other members.”

So just what is hypnotherapy? Hypnotherapy is a form of therapy undertaken with a person in ‘hypnosis’, where the therapist guides you into a lovely state of mental and physical relaxation and talks to your subconscious mind. Hypnosis is a natural state that you go in and out of every day. When you are in a hypnotic state, your mind is able to take a break and stop its busy chatter. Your subconscious mind is accessed, and this is where the great change can take place. In this relaxed state, we are much more open to suggestions, and once a suggestion is received and accepted by our subconscious mind, it is automatically and uncritically acted upon.

How is hypnotherapy used to help couples who are facing fertility challenges? The part of our brain that regulates the stress response also regulates our sex hormones, and any imbalance in our thinking and feeling can directly impact on the reproductive system, and the delicate balance of hormones required for conception. A couple came to me last year, soon to begin their fifth round of IVF. There was no physical indication as to why they hadn’t fallen naturally. They were devastated, desperate and emotionally broken. I worked with them individually on restoring their emotional balance by reducing their stress, and increasing the feelings of calm and relaxation. Their 5th round of IVF was successful and they are now expecting a little boy.

What are the success rates of the hypnotherapy program? Every day I am amazed and excited by the results of my clients, although the results

directly from hypnotherapy are hard to quantify. We do know through extensive studies and research that couples who utilise mind/body techniques such as hypnosis have a 42-55% conception rate, as compared to just 20% of those that use In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) alone.* What other conditions, problems or challenges can be treated using hypnotherapy? The entry price for the new Corolla Ascent hatch has been sharpened by $1,000 to just $19,990 – the best recommended retail price among small-car competitors from Mazda, Ford, Holden, Hyundai and Volkswagen.

Top-of-the-range Corolla Levin ZR maintains its price even though it gains HID headlamps with adaptive front lighting and automatic high beam. It also has the option of a new SkyviewT panoramic roof.

“Corolla is an incredible success story with more than 1.2 million sold in this country,” Toyota Australia’s executive director sales and marketing Matthew Callachor said.

THE TECHINCAL STUFF Australian Corollas are fitted with a revised 1.8-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that develops more power at 103kW. At the same time, engine enhancements, aerodynamic improvements, weight management and chassis tuning have contributed to dynamic and efficiency gains across the range. A new seven-speed MultiDrive S-CVT transmission

provides a seamless automatic shift mode or a sequential, stepped seven-speed Sport mode. It helps lower fuel consumption and emissions by more than 10 per cent to as low as 6.6 litres/100km and 152g/km of CO2 on the combined cycle – better even than the six-speed manual.

In automatic mode, the system is optimised for quietness and fuel economy, matching the transmission to the engine at all times by monitoring accelerator pedal angle, vehicle speed and braking force.

In Sport mode, the system is optimised for response and direct engine control with close-ratio upshifts and a direct downshift feeling for precise cornering control under braking and deceleration.

SAFETY Every Corolla comes with seven airbags, vehicle stability control, traction control, anti-skid brakes, six-speaker audio, cruise control, BluetoothT connectivity, air-conditioning and seatbelt warning alarm for all five seats. Corolla has a five-star ANCAP safety rating.

EURO STYLING Although Corolla has been a mainstay of the Japanese car industry, the latest model also benefits from extensive research and evaluation in Europe. Toyota’s focus on European buying preferences – which are broadly similar to Australian tastes – has delivered edgier styling.

New Corolla displays the more confident and agile face of Toyota with a low, sloping bonnet and reduced overall height that accentuate the hatch’s sleeker, more streamlined appearance.
