LADIES IN RED!

rom the catwalk to the sidewalk; it’s time to step into colour and add a little “danger” to our closets (even if it is just a pair of shoes or a scarf) The hot new trend this Autumn / Winter is about to hit our high streets. From chunky knits, patterned tights and billowing skirts, let us serenade ourselves this season with the famous Chris DeBurgh classic and adorn oneself in our favourite shade of RED. There is much debate in the ‘colour analysis’ world over this hue but I am firmly of the belief that there is a shade to suit every gal. From deep tomato to orange mango and dark berry, there is much more to the science of this shade than we would expect. Red is the longest in wavelength on the electromagnetic spectrum so it hits our eyes and brains faster than any other hue which is why its the

chosen colour for traffic stop signs and referred to as the colour of danger. It also has a physiological effect on our bodies causing our heart rates to speed up, hence why we call it the colour of passion – nothing like a little red number to stimulate the senses. However, it is not the most flattering colour on all skin tones. You must be very careful that you wear the right shade of red that harmonizes with your natural complexion. Otherwise it can very easily overpower you and get you noticed for all the wrong reasons. Whilst red is a neutral colour by origin, there are warm reds, cool reds, bright reds, soft reds, light reds and dark reds. When beauty columns talk about the ‘perfect red lip’ they are generally talking about the brighter, more vibrant variety… so don’t get sucked in. Take some time to consider your own complexion and what is going to look best on you!

QueenBeefashion Look at yourself in the mirror. Do you suit cool blues and pinks or warmer hues of coral and olive green? This will define the temperature of red you should wear. Next lets look at your dominant tone. Do you have deep dark eyes and chestnut brown hair which might indicate a darker berry red is more your shade? Or perhaps there is less contrast between your skin, hair and eye colour. Do you have rosy pink cheeks, dark blonde hair and greyish blue eyes? This might suggest that your dominant tone is soft and so a duskier more reserved shade of red like watermelon or rust will look best.

nergy, learning and inspiration for professional women in Peterborough: Peterborough Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Development Community (PWDC). Jennifer Cramb (pictured below) of Viveka Coaching & Consulting and a Founder member of the Community tells us more about what the group does.

What is the PWDC? PWDC was born from a conversation just a year ago between a group of Peterborough business women keen to create something stimulating and beneficial for professional women in the City. Our purpose is to provide opportunities for the Cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s working women to gain confidence, inspiration, and ideas to make the most of themselves. Through our events, we aim to create opportunities for women to connect to and share experiences, learn together and to gain energy from our members, guests and speakers. 18

What kinds of events do you have? We take our agenda from the suggestions and interests of our participants. At our first event in September last year, we ran an interactive development session to focus on Building your Personal Brand and Reputation.

QueenBeelife We ran some fun exercises and conversations to help us to get clear about what we would like to be known for in our workplace and how to develop, live and project our unique personal brand.

For our quarterly events we have anything from 40 – 100 participants come along from all kinds of organizations across the City, as well as female students, individuals and entrepreneurs – everyone is welcome!

At the beginning of this year, we looked at Networking with Confidence and Clarity – a vital skill for all of us to make new contacts, progress project, interests and their careers.

What else does the Community do?

A highlight in April was our wonderful guest speaker was Olympic Badminton winner, Gail Emms MBE. She wowed and impressed almost 100 talented and energetic women (and one very brave man!). She shared her secrets to success – including racing sheep uphill in Derbyshire mud and snow (sheep run faster than you’d think!). In July, Lesley Holt from Serco shared her insights into growing and projecting confidence at work. I have always had a desire to set up a business of my own where I could combine my BA Honours Degree in Surface Design with my passion for interiors and creating interesting and individual spaces. I also wanted to be a devoted mum to my son and that is when I decided to set up my own business - so I could have complete flexibility in my job and to be there for my son. WHAT WAS THE MOST DIFFICULT ASPECT OF GETTING UP AND RUNNING? Definitely, taking that first step off the side line. The transition of actually setting myself up in my design business and being in the driver seat and actually making decisions that matter. I suppose committing to my responsibilities 24/7. WHO OR WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE INTO HELPING MAKE A SUCCESS? My family and friends who have always believed in me even when I doubted myself. My son at 10 years old saying to me “mum, how will people know how creative you are if you don’t show them?” I am always inspired by success stories like that of J.K Rowling and her rags to riches life story becoming one of the most influential women in Britain - doing what she was passionate about .

WHAT’S THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU CAN GIVE TO WOMEN SETTING UP A BUSINESS TODAY? We all recognise the fundamental need to survive but often many of us ignore the thought that we can do anything that we set our minds to. If you visualise it and strive for it you can make it happen. Don’t get lost in small detail even when daily tasks take over - stay focused on the big picture and be passionate about what you do . WHAT’S THE ONE THING YOU WISHED YOU HAD KNOWN BEFORE YOU STARTED YOUR BUSINESS? I would have to say the business strategy and calculating a break-even point. There are many start up costs to a business, fixed costs and variable costs and it is important to remember that it takes time to generate a level of business and a level of sales to cover these costs. There is support available for starting a business so do your research and use the support available. WHY HAS YOUR BUSINESS BEEN SO SUCCESSFUL? Simple disciplines repeated over time will create success. I love designing and there is nothing more rewarding than a satisfied customer as customer satisfaction is the cornerstone of my business. Lazer erase S ince Laser Erase was established, Fran, the owner, has treated many clients for eyebrow tattoo removal. With semi-permanent make-up becoming more popular, requests for laser corrections are on the rise.

Sometimes, clients have been unhappy with their eyebrow tattoo colour, or some brows are considered too big or the wrong shape. Most of the time the client loved their tattooed brows once upon a time but then decided against their look. Once removed, clients often get them re-tattooed by another make-up artist and occasionally they go back to their pre-tattooed look. Laser Erase treat all eyebrows tattooed with Black or Brown inks. Due to possible reaction, they will carefully test before any full treatment and skin tests are free. Fran is experienced in removing parts of the ink, for example if the inked area is too close the nose. When removing part of a tattooed eyebrow, the client may need to have the edges re-inked to give back a sharp edge or line. Some clients only require one treatment whereas certain stubborn tattooed eyebrows can take around six treatments. Eyebrow tattoos are much easier to remove than body tattoos because the ink is not etched too deep

Evergreen Care Trust, a charity based in Stamford, recognises the power of looking good and feeling better and offers older women (and men) the opportunity to have a regular mini massage and manicure. The therapeutic effect of an arm and hand massage, and two coats of glossy nail colour, combined with a chat and a cup of tea has been found to be comforting and uplifting. The team of Hand & Nail volunteers have been trained in basic massage and manicure techniques by the Hair and Beauty department at Stamford’s New College. Each week they visit residents at White Friars Residential Care Home, The Red House Nursing Home, Priory Court Care Home and The John Van Geest ward at Stamford Hospital. i there! My name’s Jo Price and I’m a busy 40-year-old mum of four living in Deeping St James, just outside of Peterborough. I work part-time from home as a freelance digital marketer as well as writing my personal blog: Jo & The Tribe. To save you Googling, my blog is mostly about me being relieved to not have breast cancer any more, and moaning about the kids – both topics I’m looking forward to discussing more in this column over the coming months. Just over a year ago I was diagnosed with an aggressive grade 3 breast cancer (the kids and I called it a booby bubble – so much nicer than ‘The Big C’) after being reassured by several medical professionals that the small ‘bubble’ I had discovered was nothing to worry about. For a little while, the bottom fell out of my world and I entered a very dark place. You see, my family and I had already been affected by this god-awful disease

- my mum died from breast cancer in 1999 and my beautiful 28-year-old cousin had been diagnosed with it the year before me (thankfully she’s now doing really well). I’d spent the last 17 years worrying myself silly about the very thing I was now having to deal with. I can’t tell you how terrified I was - I was literally living my very worst nightmare. I thought I was going to die. I didn’t. Thankfully I have a pretty amazing set of family and friends, and thanks to them, a little help from our wider community and the wonderful work of the NHS (specifically Mr Steven Goh, a Consultant at the Peterborough Breast Unit) I’m still here to tell the tale. But getting here wasn’t an easy ride! I had a double mastectomy and reconstruction, three cycles of chemo (it should have been four but I got pneumonia and sepsis on my third cycle and it was suggested that having a fourth would do more harm than good) will have monthly injections for

QueenBeelife the next five years that have put me in a chemically induced menopause, a six- monthly infusion of ‘bone juice’ to strengthen my bones against the harsh effects of chemo and help prevent a secondary cancer in my bones, and will take a tablet every day for the next ten years! Phew!!

I’m incredibly lucky that I caught my cancer super-early, and so whilst it was a naughty, fast-growing blob, it was sorted before it had the chance to creep into other parts of my body. Which is why I am so passionate about reminding women and men of the importance of getting familiar with their breasts and being aware of the many different symptoms of breast cancer – it doesn’t always prevent itself as a lump you know! Early detection really can mean the difference between life and death 99% of all women who have a stage 1a breast cancer (which mine was) will still be around 5 years after diagnosis, and most likely a lot longer after that too. In November this year, in a bid to turn my horrible experiences of last year into something positive, I will spend 7 days trekking in Oman for the amazing breast cancer awareness charity CoppaFeel! Out of hundreds of applicants I am one of a few lucky ones selected to take part. We’ll be trekking over 75km through the searing daytime heat and camping out in the freezing cold night-time desert. IS IT POSSIBLE TO SWITCH CAREERS? I was recently asked if it’s possible to completely switch careers after being in the same role for a long time. As something I’ve experienced myself, I know all too well the fear and doubt that creeps up when you start thinking about a big life change. After all, it’s not just the thought of learning something new, but the financial implications this may have. But from my own actions and those who have done the same, what really holds us back the most isn’t the qualifications or the idea of a little pay cut, it’s fear. Fear that we won’t be good enough, fear that we may not enjoy it, and fear that others may think differently of us.

When you find something that you enjoy and fills your life with a purpose, you become happier and more fulfilled in general. We spend more of our lives at work than doing anything else, and if you’re not enjoying what the day brings it can quickly make other areas in your life feel negative as well. From seeing the cracks in a relationship to bruising your self-confidence.

This is completely normal because we’re stepping out of our comfort zone and doing something for ourselves.

Our work and what we do between 9-5 has a bigger impact on our lives than we often give it credit for. So do yourself a favour and go for it!

As in any big life change, there will no doubt be critics who will help to amplify those fears.

ARE YOU A SEPARATED PARENT?

ontested court proceedings involving children are steadily increasing in number and are at the highest recorded for more than 3 years. In June this year Cafcass (Children and Family Advisory and Support Service) received a total of 3,913 new private law cases, representing a 12% increase on the previous year. For a number of years, parents who wish to go to court to have a dispute resolved by a Family tribunal, have first to try the mediation route. Unfortunately, this has become more of a form filling exercise – you pay your fee and receive a MIAMs (Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting) certificate which you then annex to your Children Act application form. Mediation can be very effective in getting parents together to find a way through chronic disagreements over children arrangements. A mediated agreement is not as binding as a court order, but if both parents have the will and

commitment to make it work, it can be as effective. The parents can also voluntarily complete a Parenting Plan which again requires both parents to cooperate in recording agreements they broker in respect of the children. If your dispute gets as far as the courts, you will almost inevitably be ordered to attend a SPIP or Separated Parents Information Programme. It is not widely known that parents can attend a SPIP outside of the court arena, and are very much encouraged to do so if they have difficult or longstanding disputes with the other parent over whom should spend what time with the children. Any parent in this situation can now make use of this very helpful workshop which will open your eyes to the effect of parental conflict on your children and provide you with advice and guidance towards making things better for all concerned. You won’t be in the same workshop as the other parent, you will be in a small group with other

parents with similar issues. The workshops are for half a day and are held during school hours or Saturday. Then look no further, Peterborough Youth Choir provides all this – and more – to children aged 7 and upwards. Better yet, it’s completely free! Peterborough Youth Choir provides professional tuition and exceptional performance opportunities to over 60 members aged between 7 and 19, from schools across the city and beyond. Their performances are regularly broadcast on BBC Radio Cambridgeshire and in 2016 they featured on BBC One’s Songs of Praise. They have performed with stellar musicians including the King’s Singers, The Band of the RAF Regiment and the BBC Concert Orchestra, among many others, and - in partnership with Bill Kenwright Ltd members of the choir have participated in the national tours of Evita starring Marti Pellow, Joseph and his Tecnicolour Dream Coat

on’t believe the hype! We at the The Young People’s Counselling Service KNOW that community spirit exists. We are supported by it every single day.

We are a local charity that provides free counselling to 11-16 year olds across Peterborough. We are a non-government funded charity that relies on the generosity of local residents and businesses to help keep our charity alive. Just this week we have been donated a workforce by Produce World, decorating materials by Homebase and paint by Community RePaint in order to spruce up one of the rooms we use to deliver counselling sessions in (the use of which is also donated to us by William De Yaxley School). Oh, and to keep everyone from going hungry SubExpress are supplying a free lunch to all the volunteers. Thirsty you say? No problem! The Yaxley Partnership are supplying the refreshments.

And just in case there are still some cynical minds out there crying ‘good PR for companies’, we also have a group of (slightly bonkers) local people who are going to be jumping out of a plane for YPCS in our charity sky dive event! Not to mention those who walked across hot coals for us in The Great Yaxley Firewalk recently, or those who sang and played their hearts out at our Big Band night at the Key Theatre ^

An update from the

QUEENBEE ALLOTMENT

’m SO excited to share our allotment successes - the plot is looking super happy and so are we! We started in April so we’ve only been growing here for 4 1/2 months, yet we’ve been gathering fruits and veggies since as early as June, proving how quick, easy and beneficial it is to grow your own!

Some crops exceeded expectation in abundance and size. Firstly, our courgettes and marrows came thick and fast, providing us with a hefty Summer-long dose of skin and body nourishing vitamin. Also, our Desiree red potatoes did particularly well - packed full of Potassium, a natural stressreliever and muscle strengthener, these are a family favourite for their fluffiness! ^

Why we love the QueenBee allotment! > SAVING MONEY We must have saved hundreds of £s from this project so far - we haven’t had to buy our usual family trolley-load of fruit & veg from Tesco! > PURE FOOD Buying organic can mean you’re halving the amount of shopping you can get for your budget. At our plot, we’ve been using organic compost and seeds whilst never using anything except water and nutrients on our plants, meaning our produce is 100% chemical free. > EXTRAS Since there are vacant plots still with their fruit trees and herb gardens, we’ve been able to gather extras that we haven’t got on our own plot. There are also chickens pecking around on neighbouring plots, sometimes meaning a free bunch of eggs when we bump into a friendly face! > FEELING GREAT We’ve had SO much produce which means we’ve been making smoothies every morning, eating plenty of raw salads, using fresh veggies in every meal AND cooking plenty of delicious desserts. We’ve never felt so full of life and energy – which we definitely need when the kids are around all Summer! > LOOKING GREAT Enjoying our plot means we’ve had a steady tan all Summer! Also, due to all the vitamins from our produce, our skin is glowing without using our usual routine creams. > FAMILY FUN The kids have loved the allotment as much as us – as well as encouraging them to eat plenty of healthy, fresh produce, they’ve learned invaluable skills on growing veg.

THE COMMON COLD OF PSYCHIATRY

n the last 30 years, depression and anxiety have become increasingly common in the UK and is often referred to by doctors as ‘the common cold of psychiatry ‘.

or substance misuse. Research has also shown that women are more invested in relationships and therefore relationship challenges are more likely to develop into depressive symptoms in women.

Recent figures show that 1-in-7 of us have the chance of developing depression. It’s also known that at any one time 1-in-4 of us will be suffering some form of mental health challenge. In my practice the majority of clients I see are suffering with the symptomology of anxiety and depression and feel stuck there.

Culturally, women also come under more stress than men. They work just like men, but are often also the main home-maker, carer for children and elderly relatives and generally the all-round peace maker.

However, it’s not as simple as that. Figures show that women are twice as likely to suffer clinical depression than men. It’s easy to say that hormonal fluctuations women are subjected to make the difference, but there are other significant differences too. Psychologically, women ruminate much more than men. Yes, women are more thoughtful than men, which in the main, is great and useful. However, it may also predispose them to developing depression. In contrast, men are more likely to react to difficult times with stoicisms, anger 66

ge-gap relationships seem to be making the headlines on an almost weekly basis. Cheryl and Liam. Jason Statham and Rosie H-W. Johnny Depp and half of Hollywood. Then there’s Mick Jagger. Kate Moss. Zoe Ball. Harrison Ford. Madonna. Demi Moore. Kylie. The list is endless. The latest scandal vying for column space, of course, is newly-elected French President, Emmanuel Macron and wife Brigitte Trogneux… who at 24 years her junior, met Brigitte when he was a fifteenyear-old student and she was his drama teacher! Ooh er missus! The tabloids and gossip columns are full of age-gap relationships – some which have floundered along the way, others that have gone from strength to strength and have lasted the test of time.

It seems, however, that whether these relationships are acceptable or not very much depends on which sex is the elder of the two. Men are applauded, admired and envied for pulling a woman who is old enough to be his niece. But for ladies who suddenly rock up with a toyboy on her arm, it’s a different kettle of Aptamil altogether. She’s branded a cougar. A sexual predator. And heaven forbid, a cradle snatcher of all things! It’s seen as somehow immoral, taboo and odd. But how many people out there go looking for a mate with a specific number attached to them? When you meet a potential partner – usually purely by chance and completely out of the blue - you talk, you click and a romance is born. Age shouldn’t even come into the equation. If somebody makes you happy, loves you, cares for you and never hurts you, then who gives a flying bleep if they are eighteen or eighty? Love knows no boundaries and age is, after all, just a number. And I for one can’t wait until my husband throws his fortieth birthday bash just as I am about to retire! So remember fellow cougars in the making… life only comes around once, do whatever makes you happy, be with whoever makes you smile ^
