BEAUTY RESET
WELCOME
Welcome to the Autumn 'Reset' issue 2020
T
here won’t be many among the 7.7 billion people on Earth who haven’t been affected in some way by COVID-19, whether it be in a positive or negative way. As Summer ends and lockdown eases, gyms and schools re-open and holidays are booked, businesses and individuals across the globe are turning their attention to the recovery process – and the opportunity it provides to reset and rebuild in a different way. This time has given us the chance to step back and rethink the world we would like to live in and ask ourselves, what can we be doing differently? What does the 'new normal' look like? What are you concerned about, hopeful for or even looking forward to in a changed future? Have you reset your life during lockdown? Maybe you started a new hobby or exercise regime or decided to change your career path. I used lockdown to produce and launch the QueenBee Talks podcast, after months of procrastination! It was so much work and it really threw me out of my comfort zone, but I loved learning something new and creating a platform for local women to share their stories, inspirations and knowledge.
4
QueenBee magazine
To my delight and amazement it reached number three in the Apple Podcast charts in the first week - so all the hard work was worth it! Search for 'QueenBee Talks' wherever you find your podcasts - there's a brand new episode every Wednesday morning where we aim to inspire, educate and entertain! As well as our own personal changes, we all have a responsibility to be pushing the reset button and looking at how to create well-being for people and for the Earth. Even the smallest change to your lifestyle can make a difference, whether it's switching to reusable shopping bags, shopping more locally, eating less meat or recycling more. This is our biggest ever issue of QueenBee and I really hope you enjoy it! There's plenty of inspiring articles, motivating advice and fashion ideas (now we're finally able to climb out of our joggers and venture out again!). I hope you all have a wonderful Autumn QueenBee will be back just in time for the festive season!

Is it time for an Autumn beauty reset? Cruelty- free & vegan skincare to help ‘reset’ your skincare routine. By Katy Rose @katyroseblogs
The world is still a bizarre place at the moment and with a lot of uncertainty about the future lingering, it’s easy to lose sight of the positives. For myself, one positive of spending extra time at home is that I finally have a fully established skincare routine that I am happy with. Many of us went through a stage of ‘lockdown skin’ breakout - this spurred me on to research and discover some skincare brands and new products to try! Here are three of my faves! >

1. The Biologist The Biologist are a Peterborough based eco-friendly skincare company who ensure that their love of the environment is at the forefront of their company ethos. All of their products are organic, eco-friendly, recyclable and contain responsibly sourced ingredients. The Biologist Organic Nourishing Lip Balm and Coconut Sugar Lip Polish have become staples in my skincare routine. The Coconut Sugar Lip Polish is a gentle exfoliator that helps to remove dry skin whilst leaving your lips soft and smooth. It contains a generous amount QueenBee magazine
of jojoba oil to help trap in moisture for longer lasting results. An essential for the upcoming winter months! ÂŁ12.99. If you are looking for a lip balm which is sure to leave your lips feeling instantly hydrated and nourished, the Strawberry Lip Balm is a must for you. Infused with cocoa butter, avocado butter and coconut oil, it provides deep hydration to help soften and prevent chapped lips. The vitamins help keep your lip looking plump and healthy. ÂŁ9.99. 2. Vemel Waterless skincare Vemel is a natural skincare brand, manufactured in Berkshire. When looking further into ingredients in their beauty products at home, Vemel creators were shocked to find a huge amount of synthetic ingredients were included. They decided to create a skincare range that is made solely of 100% natural and organic vitamins, minerals and antioxidant rich skin nourishing ingredients. The Vitamin Boost Cleansing Balm (£25) is a gentle and purifying cleanser that leaves your skin looking radiant, healthy and feeling soft. It is blended with vitamin rich oils and contains sunflower, sea buckthorn and carrot extract which help to balance, tone, smooth and firm. Did you know that 14

sunflower oil is fantastic for cleansing? It dissolves makeup without stripping your skin as well as being full of fatty acids, carotenoids and vitamins A, D & E. Winner of the 2020 ‘Best Vegan skincare product’ in the 2020 Global Green beauty awards, the Daily Moisturising Face Butter (£34) is a fantastic everyday moisturiser. It's blended with mango butter, jojoba and argan oil which creates a fast absorbing, hydrating moisturiser, providing long lasting nourishment, boosting collagen levels and promoting healthy looking skin.

Their Eco studio uses 100% wind power and low energy lighting to ensure maximum sustainability! They offer products for your skin, hair and body, all of which include many award winning products. Their hyaluronic serum won 10 different awards! I love using Evolve beauty’s Rainforest Rescue Blemish Serum (£22). HOROSCOPES
A new season heralds rebirth, growth and new beginnings. To fully embrace the changes you must let go of what's not serving you anymore. Astrologer Katie Lancashire reveals what’s in store for you. Aries
Stay kind and connected in every conversation this month and you will flush out facts that influence your future, in all the best ways.
Scorpio
You may disagree with people closest to you over what to do and why, but this triggers a positive process. So stick to a plan, no matter what.
Sagittarius
Taurus
Plans and routines could get shaken up without warning. Don't be surprised if a long-term relationship or old friendship suddenly changes. Expect the unexpected, but don't make any impulsive decisions.
Focus on the individual steps you need to take to achieve your goals, rather than worrying about the entire journey. Keep your eye on the ball financially.
Capricorn
Gemini
Take pride in all you’ve achieved. You’ve risen amongst the ranks. The temptation to hide is strong, but get out there. Start living again, instead of existing.
Cancer
Don’t fear your future, embrace it. It’s what you’ve been waiting for. The time for action is now and Venus is on hand to offer you the charm to talk important faces into believing in you.
Whether moving or improving, be sure to double check any legal documents before signing. News from overseas could prove challenging, especially if travel is out of the question.
It’s time to look for work you love and step back from a tough schedule. Listening to your inner thoughts is one way to establish what you really need.
Aquarius
Pisces
Leo
Do everything with confidence this month and you’ll pull off pretty much anything. No longer is the past holding you back, but serves as a lesson, which you can use to better the choices you make.
Work success may not come ready-made but your chart gives you the tools you need to build it for yourself
Virgo
Relationships come under the magnifying glass as once again, a loved one throws their toys out of the pram. It’s time to have an honest heart to heart.
Libra
What you say and do this month can have a huge impact on the rest of the year. Make every day one in which you move forward, or even away, from those who hold you back.

NEW swimming term starts Monday 12th October. Overwhelmingly, parents who have returned to swimming report feeling safe. The Centre is always clean and with the new one way system and social distancing, everyone feels calm and relaxed. Reduced class sizes mean the lessons feel the same as they did before - wonderful!
PARENTHOOD
Calmababy resets The Calmababy Centre will be ten years old on 10th October. Never could we have imagined that instead of planning for our 10th birthday celebrations, we would be preparing to reset and re-open our business all over again! By Alison Duff, Founder and Director, Calmababy
N
othing could have prepared us for the number of necessary changes! Reams of regulations and governing body guidance that we had to read and implement to make sure we could re-open safely. In all honestly, it was daunting, even a little scary and at times we didn't know if it would be possible. For months we lived in limbo, wondering when the government would give the green light for swimming pools to re-open. What kept us going was the knowledge that everything we do is worthwhile. The Centre brings happiness and lasting benefit to children and their families we couldn't lose sight of that amid the decisions and guidelines. We were determined to make it work and held the child-friendly perspective at the forefront of all our planning.
32
QueenBee magazine
Our main priority has always been safe practices. However, 'safety' now took on a whole new definition. Displaying scary warnings and prohibitive messages just wasn't an option. So we chose Gruffalo social distancing signs (see an example the next page) and giant lego block changing cubicles. We gave the outdoor play area a makeover and filled it with bright colours and new toys. Beginning again has been incredible! It has been full of positives and such a relief to know that we got it right. The Centre feels safe and welcoming. Classes flow smoothly and feel like they did before lockdown. Best of all, Selina's still serves the most fantastic cake! > The new swimming term starts on Monday 12th October. If you'd like to experience the magic of Calmababy, please get in touch. Going out - the new staying in? By Michelle Abbott @maison_abbott
W
hat a Summer it’s been! Cancelled holidays, plans on hold, uncertainty, working from home, and definitely not going out. Now that things are easing towards a new cautious normality, you might be anticipating a meal out with friends or family, a drink in the local pub or just a wander around the high street. After months of comfort dressing, loungewear and voluminous frocks for home working and hunkering down, what does one wear to go out now? This is the new staying in, so we need to enjoy the transition! I think now, more than ever before, we need to really enjoy our clothes and have fun with them. This is a huge confidence booster when you might feel slightly anxious about engaging with the world at large again. You can’t go wrong with a flattering shirt dress, to which you can add a jacket as the temperature cools and a pair of heeled ankle boots. For me, the exciting thing about going out somewhere is the chance to wear proper shoes and use a bag! This is
42

the time to let your accessories do the talking and use your most loved bags to showcase against a simple outfit. It’s so good to rediscover your wardrobe now like good friends, your favourite clothes are there waiting for you, to make you feel better! > Reset issue 2020

The jumpsuit is another great piece to go out in (check out the gorgeous Hush jumpsuit on the next page). They work so well dressed up with a heel and an oversized clutch for a night out - add that classic blazer again and you’re all set. If you want something to really shine in, try a sequin skirt like this one here. I think we are all well acquainted with the idea that sequins are not just for Christmas, and worn with a cool vibe they really are a great dress up, dress down staple. For a trip to the pub, I’d add a band slogan or breton tee and a denim or leather biker jacket. In summary, wherever you are going, enjoy the process of dressing for the occasion, swing that bag with pride and stay safe!

Q: What is Play Therapy? Play Therapy is a developmentally appropriate therapeutic intervention for children between three and fourteen, although it can be adapted for teenagers or older people with additional needs. It supports children with their mental health and wellbeing by allowing them to process the traumas they've experienced in a developmentally appropriate way. Play Therapy can be a long or short-term intervention dependent on the needs of the child. here are many different reasons T why a child may need Play Therapy to support them to process situations in their lives. For example - bereavement, family separation, anxiety, low selfesteem and early-life or medical trauma.
Q: Tell us about your business I run Juniper Play Therapy, based at the Cambridgeshire Wellness Clinic in Werrington, Peterborough.
QueenBee magazine
In the play room (below) there are different toys and materials, for example dolls, a sandtray, art equipment which all have a different therapeutic purpose. I work non-directively, so the children are able to lead the play and be in control in the play room. If a child's emotions become dysregulated, I co-regulate to enable them to become calm and may on occasion set limits if necessary.
Q: What made you decide to set up your business? I worked as a teacher for 16 years and had got to the point in my career where I fancied a change. I had been diagnosed with some health conditions and it was important that I started to look after myself, however I still wanted a career which I enjoyed. I went back to university to study an MSc in Play Therapy at the University of South Wales with a view to becoming my own boss and being able to set my own hours. >

BUSINESS
I have always wanted to make a difference to the children I work with and through Play Therapy I can help children process difficult situations or experiences they have had or enable them to develop/improve coping mechanisms for dealing with anxiety and stress.
Q: Why do you think your business is so successful? I'd like to think it's because I do a good job. Parents of the children I have worked with comment on the differences in their children following their play therapy sessions. Parents have mentioned improved self-esteem and self-confidence, greater emotional regulation and better relationships with the children once their child has finished their process.
Q: What or who has been your biggest influence? The children I have worked with. As a teacher, and now play therapist, I have worked with a variety of children from all walks of life.
I have loved meeting every one of them and tried to understand and support them in the most appropriate way for them. The children taught me the most about how to be a good teacher and an empathic play therapist.
Q: What’s been your biggest challenge? Without a doubt completing my Masters degree whilst still working!
Q: What’s the most rewarding aspect of your business? When working with children in the play room and seeing their pride in being able to do something they didn't think they could do. It's priceless.
Q: What do you like to do to relax and switch off? I like to spend time with family, friends and my two miniature schnauzers, Mabel and George. I also enjoy having therapeutic treatments to help me relax and unwind.
Q: What are your future plans? I plan eventually to set up a Community Interest Company (CIC) to support families on low incomes access play therapy for their children. My mum was a single parent and on a low income and would have struggled to provide such therapy for my brother and I when we were children, if it wasn't available on the NHS > Call Cathryn on 07544 744153. Healing young minds through play Here at Juniper Play Therapy we help children understand muddled feelings and upsetting events. Rather than having to explain what is troubling them, children use play therapy to communicate at their own level and at their own pace, without feeling interrogated or threatened.
There are many different reasons why Play Therapy may help a child: • Making sense of new family situations • Being adopted • Trauma • Bereavement • Anxiety •C oming to terms with terminal illnesses or medical conditions • Family separations/dysfunction • Abuse/neglect • Challenging behaviour

Reset, Reboot By Teddi the Drag Queen
Another 2 months have flown by and what a two months it has been! ‘Corona’ aside, we have experienced the hottest day on record and then torrential downpours. However, this is now the perfect time to think about how to RESET yourself...

I
magine me, mid 20s, a plucky young person in London wanting the whole world, trying to open doors when they were being shut in my face. I wanted to act, sing, be someone and leave a mark on this world.
But without this ‘reset’ none of this could have been possible. Some people are in your life for a season, some are in your life forever. If you look closely, they all teach you something… you’ve just got to find the lesson.
For the longest time I had wanted to be on stage - whether it was for adoration or the fact that I was good at it - I don’t really know, but I had started my journey. It was a hard time, but I had to persevere. I had left home and had a group of friends who expected me to succeed where they had not; I was their beacon of hope.
Resetting yourself and changing your mindset can really help you elevate yourself to the next level, push yourself to new horizons, or even re-valuate your boundaries, even if you did not realise you needed to.
I was not to know that I couldn’t sustain this, the amount of pressure I had placed on myself was absolutely insane. I’d given myself a goal: I have to ‘make it’ by 26. Three years I had given myself in order to ‘make it’ but instead I had to deal with rejection.
So, see what happens when you do reset goals, aspirations, relationships, it may take you on a journey you never thought you needed
Podcast with Teddi coming 9th September!
Everything was incredibly hard and on top of that, being subjected to critiques of too fat/not fat enough, too feminine/ not feminine enough, “we thought you were spectacular but just couldn’t see you in the role…” it was exhausting and I tumbled into a depressive state. At this point I knew I needed to reset myself, let go and dive into something new. And I did. I started writing, got a job, made new goals, new friends and surrounded myself with people who wanted to support me and I them. QueenBee magazine

020 has proven itself to be the most unusual (and stressful) year that many of us have experienced. Faced with the fear of COVID, whilst coping with it’s many knock-on effects, we’ve all had to pull out every ounce of strength and patience we have just to get through. I’m sure we’ll all remember this year for the rest of our days, but it’s one we’ll be happy to see the back of! Needless to say, lockdown has impacted and changed everything: our home lives, professional lives, financial circumstances and parenting methods to name a few things. It’s no wonder this necessity to adapt has caused such a huge shift in the way we think and feel too. It’s as though being isolated at home has forced us to smell the roses, to realise the importance of what’s been right there all along, and to make the most of what we have, however we can. It seems to have given us the room to connect with ourselves and our instincts more deeply too.
Outdoor spaces have seen rapid and lush transformations all over the country and no doubt far beyond, and it’s been a pleasure to witness hundreds of these incredible projects all from the safety of my computer! Many of us have been busy creating truly soul-nurturing spaces inside and outside our homes recently - Spaces that make us feel good, and spaces that are productive, calming and brimming with life and inspiration. For me, Facebook has finally shown itself to be a truly valuable resource in this sense, giving us all a chance to be inspired by others and participate in this burst of creativity. For many who would never have had the time to turn their houses and gardens into beautiful sanctuaries, lockdown has been the perfect opportunity, and the perfect reason too. >
For me, one of the biggest positives to come from this period of uncertainty has been the growing spread of a different kind of bug the gardening bug! The urge to grow food and flowers has become more commonplace, rather than just being an activity solely for the garden hobbyist. Allotment vacancies have been snapped up quicker than ever, with waiting lists growing a mile long. QueenBee magazine

ALLOTMENT
It makes me feel that, for many, this has been an intuitive strategy to cope with the rising stress. Whilst mental health has been a linked and rising issue during this pandemic, people have instinctively turned to their own little piece of the great outdoors for relief and tranquility, whilst openly sharing their heartfelt stories alongside their creative garden masterpieces for all to see (on FB groups such as ‘Gardening on a Budget’). Stories such as NHS workers finding a moment of peace in their garden between long shifts, or at home parents utilising outdoor spaces to make days more bearable and full of adventure. And for the little ones, or even singles who have found

themselves out of work and deciding to use the opportunity to travel the UK with little more than a car and a back pack - the shift towards nature to ease our souls and nourish our spirits is beautifully palpable. Though it’s been a tough time to say the least, it’s lovely to sit back and recognise the delicious hidden fruits of the COVID tree - The deep and profound changes that are occurring amongst us, and all the amazing things that we’ve accomplished… even if it is just getting through lockdown! The QueenBee allotment has been super fruitful this year and what a great way to de-stress! Photos: Lucy Grace.

nd just like that.... I’m officially reopen! Five months have passed since I turned the lights off and closed the door to my studio for what I thought would have been a couple of weeks. On August 15th, when beauty was 'finally' given the go ahead to open, (after a couple of frustrating false starts) I welcomed back my first few clients and all that worry and stress during lockdown was wiped away in a matter of days of reopening - five days to be exact! Lockdown has made many of us re-evaluate where we find ourselves emotionally, physically and even spiritually. Reconnecting with ourselves has never felt more rewarding. However, what if feeling like the old you just isn’t cutting it anymore? Then you deserve to feel more. You deserve to feel empowered! > 60

It’s no longer just celebrities that steal the limelight for role models. If this time has taught us anything, it’s that mothers, wives and workers etc all deserve to be celebrated and feel worthy on a daily basis. I strongly believe that beauty always has and always will be about empowerment. Being away from our favourite treatments has reminded many of us around the world that there’s a reason it’s called beauty ‘therapy’ because it makes us feel good. Self care allows you to feel loved and cared for. Our perception of self care plays a huge role in our everyday lives, from decisions we make to thoughts and feelings about ourselves.

Autumn reset with 3 simple steps… The month of September usually comes with a feeling of new beginnings and a fresh sense of newness... By Tola Macaulay, TMacLife Ltd
H
owever, due to the pandemic, this season has been overwhelmed with feelings of uncertainty and, dare we say, a ‘new normal’ - with lockdown rules being eased, there’s a collective feeling that it’s time to get back to business.
think goal setting is an unnecessary waste of time, think again! Instead of setting unrealistic resolutions for the entire year, we like setting mini goals and reassessing these on the regular. September is the perfect time to do just that.
Whether you’re just returning from holiday, are heading back to a new year of studying or are just ready and raring to get stuck into work this Autumn, here’s why we think there’s no time like the present to set some new goals...
2. The 'back to school' mindset.
1. Science says successful people set goals. Researchers have found that people who set small goals and targets do much better and achieve more than those who don’t bother. So, if you
For the majority of us, going back to studying at school or uni in September is sadly a distant memory. But somehow, that back to school mindset has stayed with us. For years of our lives, this was a time for a new beginning, and there’s great opportunity in captivating on this, even now. The craziness of summer, with all its staycations, lockdown bake offs, drinks and holidays, is winding down, so take the time to re-evaluate what you want to achieve this year. >

That could be taking on a new fitness challenge, tuning back into your healthy diet or getting organised at work. Find that spring in your step again, as if you’re ready and raring to kickstart a new year at school. 3. The pressure’s off. Despite there being a collective momentum at this time of the year, it’s not the same as the unbearable pressure of January. There’s no constant media bombardment of what you 'should' be doing, or extreme social pressure. You can focus on what YOU actually want to achieve or get done this year, not what all your friends are doing. Setting successful goals is all about having purpose and reason, to make sure you a) stick to them, and b) reap the right rewards for all your hard work. Ready, steady, go... slow Re-introduce Exercise Slowly, Effectively, Timely By Yaba Afful-Logotse, Afful Health & Fitness Ltd
I
need to ‘Reset’ is the number one goal my clients have come to me with after 4 months of the gym being closed. Can you relate? Some of us have come out of lockdown in better health and fitness than before. Some have stayed the same and some fitness levels have taken a plunge. No matter which camp you fall into, this is your opportunity to reset your mind and body back on track regardless of what challenges have been thrown your way over the last few months. My key message as a health coach and Personal Trainer to those of you eager to rush back to the gym or a home regime; Start at a beginner level.. Yes, even if you were a Cross training, Power lifting, marathon running champion, ease your body back into it.
Did you know, it only takes a measly 2 weeks of inactivity to begin losing that precious fitness we worked so hard for, and the great news is that it takes as little as 4 weeks of consistent training to rebuild it. Over training can result in injuries which can further delay the process, so being patient with yourself and trusting the process is the way forward. Check out the next page to see the fun and effective 15 minute Full Body workout I have put together designed to do from home or to be incorporated into your gym routine. Fern & Oak sells personalised and hand-finished gifts and was founded in January 2020 by Shelley Cash, a professional marketer based in Peterborough.
Fern & Oak
On the 8th September 2019, Shelley delivered her daughter Fern Taylor, who was sadly born sleeping at 24 weeks and 5 days. Fern sadly suffered from Edwards Syndrome, also known as trisomy 18, which is a rare but serious condition. Edwards’ syndrome affects how long a baby may survive. Sadly, most babies with Edwards’ syndrome will die before or shortly after being born. Going through this devastating experience inspired Shelley to set up a small business to create beautiful gifts. The business was named ‘Fern & Oak’ after beautiful little Fern, and Oak to symbolise growth and strength. Something which Shelley and her partner felt was very fitting after going through such an emotional and testing experience. Shelley wanted to create a business which offers ethical products and packaging as she is continuously striving to be as eco-friendly as possible. The range of gifts are reusable where possible and encourage the reduction of plastics and other materials.

Get off your butt ...and use it By Nazleen Reed, Ultimate Performance Lifestyle Ltd
Us humans have over 600 muscles in our body and the gluteus maximus is the largest. It is located at the back of the hip and is also known as the buttocks. It is one of three gluteal muscles: meduis, maximus and minimus.
A
lthough this muscle is the largest, when I test this muscle during a Physiotherapy appointment
I find it is one of the weakest. Why is this? There are many factors contributing to its loss of activity but the main one is sitting. When we sit, this muscle is switched off and not being used as its main functions are: 70
QueenBee magazine
• Standing up from sitting • Holding yourself up in standing • Climbing stairs Weak gluteal muscles often contribute to: • Back pain • Knee problems • Hip and groin pain • Bursitis of the hip and knee Reset issue 2020
I quite often hear patients say that they do lots of squats and yes, squats do strengthen the gluteal muscles, but often if your leg muscles are strong they take over and the glutes become lazy. The first thing I do is to check your squat technique as this can be wrong and I will be able to identify if it uses the gluteal muscle weakness or other imbalances. There are many exercises to help with gluteal strength but you need to wake up this lazy muscle first. This can be done in sitting, standing and lying: try to contract your gluteal muscles and hold for 10 seconds and now the tricky part is contract the right buttocks without the left and visa versa.

WELLBEING
I
n recent months you may of had additional time and space to reflect on life and the way that you once lived. As things begin to ease, many of us are beginning to go back to work and establish more of a routine. During this time it can be helpful to reflect on the things that you have learnt and what you have changed; not only the things you might do differently, but also in the way that you think and speak to yourself. By nature it can be common for our inner chatter to be somewhat self-critical. For example, have you ever noticed when things go wrong you automatically question or blame yourself? Or when things go right you deflect compliments or give the credit to other people? In order to become more compassionate towards ourselves we must speak to ourselves with the same love and kindness that we do others.
new formed boundaries can help aid a healthier wellbeing as things restart. It is common for it to feel uncomfortable or challenging when developing a self compassionate voice. Try not to hold too much judgment of this. When experiencing a lot of negative self chatter it can be useful to place one hand upon you heart and repeat the following affirmations.
"I am safe" "I am peaceful" "I am enough" This helps to give a sense of love and kindness to yourself and give a sensation of a warm hug > For help and support email Steph at becomeyourbestself19@gmail.com
The first step for this is noticing what your inner chatter is saying and how often this occurs. Once you are aware of this it can be helpful to question what a friend would say to us in that situation, or perhaps what you would say to someone you cared about. In addition to this during this moment of stillness you may have noticed how much you'd usually say yes to people (even when you want to say no). Being aware of this and establishing

MOTHERHOOD
Fresh season, fresh you Being Me, Being Mum. Ups, downs, trying and getting there… By Bianca Liguori
We often think about January being the start of the new year, but for me it’s September. Being a teacher, Autumn has always been a new start and time to think about changes that can be made. Usually we’ve said goodbye in July for the summer but this year has not been so straight forward. Despite the uncertainty that still surrounds us, I’m determined to make sure this Autumn is the usual reboot for both me and my family >

remember growing up the excitement of the new school year starting. Organising a new pencil case, making sure the uniform was all ready and organised to go, imagining all the new learning and opportunities the next school year would bring. I’m not ashamed to say I am still the exact same! I love the preparations a new school year can bring; it holds all the hope and anticipation of a January new year but without the exhaustion of a manic festive Christmas just days before. As I prepare for the new school year and prepare my little one for a change in room at nursery I can’t help but think about the past few months. I’ve been so lucky to spend so much more time with my little one during the past five months and wholeheartedly appreciate every second.
into a routine of childcare and set bedtime, as hard as that is right now I know it will make things easier in a week or two. Things naturally fall into place and I have no doubts that within a month, the summer will feel like a distant memory. So here’s to a new start, a fresh season offering time to reset and renew. Let’s take time to reflect on the past few months and realise the changes we’d like to put in place for this next chapter of the year. Lunchboxes, name labels and diaries at the ready, it’s never the wrong time to make a fresh start > Read more of Bianca's blogs at being-mum.com
While it’s been a challenge balancing working at home and the local restrictions it’s still been a blessing to be together. Of course it’s only natural to feel anxious and apprehensive about changes and I know I am going to find it hard to leave him every day! It’s in my nature to make lists and plan for things. I just love a fresh start. We’ve just started to get back

DATING
...And an even better time to be on the dating scene. From making mixtapes to talking for three hours on the landline, getting ready for your date (with the help of your friends) was just as exciting as actually going on it. And of course, most of us learnt to navigate the dating world with the help of Cilla and Graham. But it’s now 2020, Blind Date has been replaced with Take Me Out, Tinder has changed the way people meet and sadly cassettes are no longer a thing (I suppose you could always make your date a playlist on Spotify). So how much has the dating landscape changed in the last 30 years and are the dating rules of 2020 the same as they were in 1990?
The rules for dating in 1990 During the 1990s a very controversial book was released called ‘The Rules’ which claimed to be a time-tested guide to dating. Even for back then, it was full
of some ridiculous and outdated suggestions - for example, don’t look at your date too much and don’t tell them what you want in bed - but despite this, there were some generally well-accepted rules for dating in the 90s. These were: • Pick your date up from their house typically this means the man would go to the woman’s home instead of meeting at the chosen venue • Have a plan and something booked for the evening - don’t just wing it! • Ask questions and get to know them - don’t just talk about yourself • Don’t sleep with each other on the first date - remember the five date rule • Generally, men pick up the cheque at the end of the date - it’s the gentlemanly thing to do • If you like them, call them calling on the landline or leaving a message on the answerphone shows them the date went well >

DATING
Are these rules still relevant in 2020? Clearly, some of these rules no longer apply, thanks in part to big strides in equality and technology, and for the most part we should be grateful for that. For example, men are no longer expected to pick up the bill and it’s certainly less taboo to hook up on the first date. It is also no longer necessary for the man to pick up his date at her home - in fact, it is safer and recommended that you meet at the venue or in a public space during the early stages of dating. That said, some of these rules and arguably the less offensive ones - still remain today. It can be nice to have a plan for your date and you should always ask questions and get to know one another. Calling your date to let them know you had a good time is also appreciated,
though nowadays WhatsApp seems to be the preferred method of communication. And to be honest, we’re a bit nostalgic for some 90s trends like writing little messages to one another on Post-It notes and being fully present during a date (not checking your mobile phone every two minutes)! So I guess what we’re saying here is that the rules of dating have certainly changed over the last 30 years, with technology and equality playing a huge role in this. That said, some are as true as they have ever been and one or two others might make the dating world a better place. So let’s bring back the good parts and leave the rest in the 90s where they belong. At Ignite Dating, we understand that the times have changed, but we know that dating agencies still remain a great and successful way to meet people. Our dedicated matchmakers are there to help you navigate the world of dating in 2020 and to find you the perfect match

ADVICE
Q: I always feel so down on myself lately and most of my thoughts about myself are negative, no matter what people say to try and make me feel better, I always think the worst of myself. The reality is, things in my life are actually going okay and I know I should be happy but I feel like I’ve just got into a negative headspace that is now ruling me – how can I snap out of it? A: It sounds like you’re stuck in a bit of a rut up in your noggin - we’ve all been there and it’s never a pleasant place to be, especially when you can rationally see that things around you are going okay and you ‘should’ be feeling grateful about that. Firstly, start with some self-compassion and be gentle with yourself, you’re having a hard time with your thoughts, and that’s okay. Don’t rush yourself to ‘snap out of it’ – spend some time noticing what feelings are coming up and just sit with

them, even if it’s a bit uncomfortable. Even though you might think everything is going okay, something is triggering your negative thought patterns. Some journaling might help you to notice when your negative thought patterns are showing up; what are the thoughts about? Do they show up in particular situations? Might it be in relation to your self-worth? Something around work? Or a relationship? Perhaps you’re comparing yourself with others (never helpful or worth it!). Take some time to notice what’s going on for you first before you try and ‘snap out of it’ without getting to the bottom of things. Secondly, call the negative thoughts out; when a negative thought passes through your mind, try and catch it. Call it for what it is, a story. Your negative thoughts are stories you’re telling yourself and it’s helpful to label them as such. When you start labelling them as stories, you’ll be able to replace them with stories that do something to serve you – more positive thoughts that create a friendlier space in your mind. Ultimately, take ownership of your thoughts and treat yourself as you would your own best friend; sit with her whilst she feels things, speak kindly to her and let her know she’s absolutely-freaking-wonderful and remind her that she already made it through 100% of her hardest days! > Send Emma your question: hello@emmahumphreycoaching.com www.emmahumphreycoaching.com

Reset your business with LeeP Accountants By Polly Lee, LeeP Accountants
During lockdown many people have taken the time to reassess their business, careers and vocations and despite the fact that we are officially in a recession, new business start ups have seen a big increase as people quit their jobs in pursuit of starting their own businesses. If this is you, watch my video for tips and advice.

hen starting a new business, it is important to get the business structure right for you.
Here at LeeP Accountants, we regularly come across clients who have selected a business structure which is not right for them – most commonly clients who have set up a new Limited company on the recommendation of a friend or family because they mistakenly believe it will save them tax without understanding the implications. When starting a new venture, there are 3 main business structures: 1. Sole trader/ Self-employed: someone working for themselves as a freelancer, contractor or owner of a business. These individuals are not necessarily “small”, some can generate hundreds of thousands in profit and remain a Sole trader. Contrary to popular belief, Sole traders can employ staff, they can be VAT registered and they can trade under a different name to their own e.g. John Smith Trading as Flower-power paints.
2. Limited companies: this is a separate legal entity in its own right with the owner being a shareholder, possibly a director and possibly an employee of this company. Any income earned by the company is not for the owner to take out unless it is via an authorised route such as salary, dividends, expenses etc and there are expensive consequences of getting this wrong or not following the rules. 3. Partnership: similar to a sole trader but there are two or more partners. A tax return is needed for each partner and for the partnership. It is always good to consult an accountant if you are unsure of which business structure you should go for. We always recommend keeping things as simple as possible. The most straight forward form is as a sole trader. Once your business takes off, gains momentum and becomes more complex, it is then possible to incorporate your sole trade business into a limited company. The best, worst mistake

ell done to Peterborough lady, Eilidh Wall who found that lockdown was the perfect time to finish writing her book that she first started 20 years ago! When writing the book, Eilidh wanted the reader to smile or even laugh out loud - she uses humour in the story which is imperative for the main character, Jessica to deal with the alien and sometimes unbearable situations she finds herself in. Eilidh worked on Cruises from 1992 1997 and the characters she met during this time were the inspiration for her novel. Whilst much of what is described on working on the ship is true, the characters are her fictional best friends. Eilidh has successfully released her novel on amazon kindle and it's a fabulous read ladies! Available on amazon for kindle

Here's a short synopsis: Jessica has worked tirelessly to become the youngest junior partner in the company, she is well respected by her peers and her team. Her safe and stable life takes and unexpected turn when Tony, her long term partner leaves. As Jessica struggles to come to terms with what went wrong, she makes a rash decision as she decides to shake off her sensible shoes and applies for a job on a Cruise Ship. She and best friend Maggie set about preparing for her forthcoming adventure. As they romanticise about the various scenes on the ship from standing on deck, hair flaying, accessorised by a handsome officer to receiving the gold embossed invitation to the captain’s table, they couldn’t be more wrong. No amount of on board inductions can prepare Jessica for life on the Galaxy Princess. As she meets the characters that make up the crew, Jessica soon learns that she is about to face the biggest challenge of her life, both physically and morally

LIFE
Free wheelin’ By Louisa Parr
W
hen my little sister and I were small, we lived on a quiet street, perched on a hill. For her 4th birthday my sibling was given a bright blue tricycle with a foot plate on the back and a Rupert the Bear bell. It didn’t take us long to discover that if she kept her feet off and away from the pedals, I could push the trike into action, like you would on a scooter and if I ran like the clappers behind her, we’d very soon pick up momentum. I’d then be able to jump onto the back plate and we’d go flying down the path at warp speed, free wheeling and fearless . For a long time now I’ve really wanted to go cycling again. But over the years
my Parkinson’s has caused me some major balance issues and low blood pressure and I knew that sadly, riding a bicycle was no longer an option for me. We had a look at three wheeled trikes for adults, but weren’t that impressed. They didn’t look very cool, seemed like hard work and looked exactly like the one my sister had almost fifty years earlier. My Partner came across a website that made recumbent trikes. I’d never seen these before, they looked so stealth like and not a wicker basket in sight! The word ‘recumbent literally means ‘lying down'. The seat is positioned in such a way that you get maximum power from your legs and into the pedals without compromising your balance and ability to control the trike. There is also an >

Ebike (pedal assist) option, which, considering my current lack of fitness, seemed like a good idea! Problem is, they’re over three and a half grand! Luckily for me, my partner is very innovative and loves getting stuck into a new project. With an engineering background and a mind for all things mechanical, I asked him if he could design me a custom made recumbent trike, building it only using scrap metal and re-purposed materials, wherever possible to keep the costs down, so he set to work... however, splurging out on special brake levers, allowing the two front wheels to stop using one hand and a special lightweight recumbent seat (the original idea of a bucket car racing seat is proving much too heavy.) It’s been a steep learning curve, a labour of love and is taking shape quite nicely. She’s not quite finished yet and even though I was a little apprehensive at first, I have taken her out for a couple of test spins and I've really enjoyed it! I’m so looking forward to being able to cycle again. I’m resetting the rules, putting new wheels into motion, adapting. It should be like riding a bike... once you learn, you never forget, regardless of how many wheels it has

THEATRE
The show must go on By Becky Owen-Fisher
The last article I wrote for QueenBee was just as we were getting used to the idea of lockdown. Theatres had only just closed and we all felt a little bit like we were in freefall. Various companies were in the process of trying to work out what was possible online and how we were going to survive.>

THEATRE
S
trange times indeed, but the show, as they say, must go on! I’ve been completely blown away by the amount of amazing theatrical activity that has been transferred online during the last few months, from the National Theatre showing an entire season of plays on YouTube to local companies like Jumped Up Theatre moving all their Body and Soul sessions onto Zoom. It’s so incredibly exciting to see.
brilliant pieces that were filmed in lockdown, and also the Whats On Stage website for a constantly updated list of shows that you can watch online for free - whatsonstage.com.
Unfortunately, despite lockdown easing in places, we’re not likely to see theatres throwing their doors open for packed out live shows any time soon.
Paines Plough also commissioned a digital programme called Come To Where I Am. In partnership with theatres across the UK, writers wrote short plays about the places they call home. There are eight series in this programme and one, made in partnership with Eastern Angles, features writes from Peterborough including previous poet laureate Clare Currie and new writer Marianne Habeshaw. You can find out more about Come To Where I Am and watch the short plays on the Paines Plough website painesplough.com.
Excitingly a lot of us have been creating work from home throughout lockdown and there’s no sign of this stopping, so if you haven’t seen a performance from the comfort of your sofa yet, don’t worry! At Lamphouse Theatre we’re used to creating work for the stage, and we’ve had to adapt what we do for the camera during our time in lockdown. It’s been really interesting to find new ways to write and present our ideas, and in the middle of July we released our first ever feature film, Peterborough Ate My Hamster. Filmed primarily on a green screen and filled with songs, comedy and a whacky storyline about a pet-hating mayor and an escaped hamster, Peterborough Ate My Hamster is the ultimate feel good film set in our city! It’s available to buy or rent right now from our website and I’d love you to check it out because I think you’ll really enjoy it: lamphousetheatre.co.uk Loads of other companies have been doing similar things; check out Culture in Quarantine on BBC iPlayer for some QueenBee magazine
Papagtango launched Isolated But Open and have filmed 12 brilliant monologues that were all written and recorded in self isolation which you can watch on their website papatango.co.uk.
So, there’s still loads happening, despite the curtains being closed. However, it is a tricky time for all of us in the arts and there’s several ways that you can help. Some buildings, like the New Theatre Peterborough, are running socially distanced cinema seasons - if you feel like you can pop along and watch a film this is a great way to support the building. If you have tickets booked to a show that has been cancelled, you could consider donating the cost back to the box office. Finally, a lot of online theatre is streaming for free, and even a couple of pounds donation will be gratefully received. Happy streaming! Reset issue 2020
