FOR WOMEN, BY WOMEN
BLOSSOM  2020
WELCOME
Welcome to the QueenBee Blossom issue 2020
I
have written and re-written this welcome note several times - in the five years of QueenBee (happy birthday to us by the way!), this has certainly been the hardest one to write. Who else feels like we're living in a movie where nothing seems real? The normality we took for granted just a few weeks ago, when we could hug our relatives, go to the gym, meet our friends in the pub or take our children to the cinema, now seems light years away.
With all the uncertainty and frightening things that are happening in the world as a result of the coronavirus, all we can do is try to stay positive. It might seem like an unusual request right now, but staying positive is the best way of coping in a crisis. More than ever, this is the time for us to be proactive about creating and recognising small moments of happiness in our days. Positive emotions help us to undo the negative effects of stress and will increase our resilience and immunity. This is an opportunity to spend more quality time with our immediate family. Take the time to mindfully hug your kids or partner; the gesture will promote closeness and will also boost your oxytocin and have a calming effect.
Facetime your friends and family, read a book, play board games, learn to cook new dishes, watch feel-good movies, go for a walk in the fresh air if you can and do some exercise in your living room (hey, we could all have toned stomachs in a few weeks if we put our mind to it!). Many of us feel isolated without face-toface contact so if you're self-isolating or in lockdown, utilise the digital world to help feel connected. Look for the good in others - these types of situations can bring out a sense of community spirit and kindness. As my mum always says 'Everything is transient, nothing stays the same. The only thing we have is now'. This WILL end, and when it does, think of the parties we will have!

BEAUTY
Lucy Rose Hanagan, making beauty beautiful We are delighted to welcome Lucy Rose Hanagan of LR Pro Studio to the QueenBee family. Lucy is an international award winning makeup and brow artist and is the only MUA in this area that is completely vegan, cruelty-free and eco-friendly. Over the next few issues, Lucy will be sharing her industry knowledge, makeover tips and ethical beauty advice with you.
Yep, I know what you’re thinking... another makeup artist. The term MUA is used so frequently these days that it’s lost it’s meaning. I’ve even seen 13 year old school girls refer to themselves as an MUA on Instagram and I often joke, if I can change the wheel on my car, does that make me a mechanic?! To be a successful artist, you must know your canvas and adapt your style accordingly. I constantly strive to create innovative, tailored and wearable looks, suitable to the individual at any age. I started my career in 2007, having spent the majority of it working alongside the industries leading artists, as well as on the red carpet, runway and celebrities, with work featured in beauty, fashion and bridal magazines.
My mission is to make beauty beautiful. I am proud to be the only studio in this area that is completely vegan, cruelty-free and eco friendly.

Blossom issue 2020
As I got older I found myself asking 'Why am I doing this? What next? What does it all mean?' ...it was then I realised, the reason I love makeup so much is because I loved seeing how it made women feel. Feeling good and having confidence in yourself can literally change your life, which is why I decided to open my own studio, offering makeup and brow treatments that are aimed at flattering and enhancing your individual and existing beauty. My philosophy is that makeup should enhance your natural beauty and leave you feeling and looking your absolute best.
BEAUTY
With that In mind, it then made me realise how contradictory the beauty industry can be. We want to look and feel our best, but at what cost? It’s so important now, more then ever, to be more mindful of ourselves, others and our planet. Unfortunately, the more you dig into the beauty industry, the uglier it seems. In 2020, a lot of beauty products are still tested on animals, something a lot of my friends and clients didn't realise. It’s cruel, barbaric and unnecessary, which makes it so ironic that we call it the ‘beauty’ industry. At LR Pro Studio, I refuse to endorse or support cruelty... my mission is to 'make beauty beautiful'. I am proud to be the only studio in this area that is completely vegan, crueltyfree and eco-friendly. I offer makeup services, brow lamination, microblading and lashes... treatments that will leave you feeling your best as well as leaving a greener footprint

HEALTH
The Mummy MOT By Gemma McGregor
S Gemma McGregor BSc (Hons) PGCert MCSP is a woman's health specialist, physiotherapist and educator.
pring has sprung, the time for fresh starts, clear minds, and focus for the year ahead. If you have recently given birth, or are still suffering with symptoms of a past pregnancy, then getting that ‘spring’ in your step can be difficult. Eight weeks after giving birth, up to half of all ladies still suffer with physical symptoms such as pelvic pain, back pain, tummy gaps and issues with continence. Without assessment and specialist advice these symptoms can linger and make life difficult for mums.
Research has long shown a clear link between regular exercise and improved mental and physical health, but so many mums have never had the support or guidance needed to give them the confidence to factor in some important self care. As women, we seem to accept the inevitability of lingering post natal symptoms or think of them as ‘what happens when you have a baby’. This then ends up restricting the types of exercise you do (if any) or the thing that really makes my heart sink - 'pad up' before going out. As busy mums we are all guilty of neglecting our basic needs just to survive the trials of motherhood. I’m sure many of you have slept awkwardly just to avoid waking a sleeping baby, missed meals to fit in football practice, skipped relaxing baths to ensure the homework is done and even put

off going to the toilet because you need to run out the door with kids in tow. So, it’s really no wonder mums don’t feel able to seek the support needed for that leaky pelvic floor, the back pain, or unresolving tummy gap. There is a very easy solution to this - give yourself the attention you deserve with a Mummy MOT. This will assess any areas of concern and give you the confidence to enjoy exercise without worrying you are making things worse, or make everyday life that bit easier if you have been struggling. The postnatal checks provided in the UK rarely mention exercise or pelvic health and tend to be a quick chat about contraception. The Mummy MOT is a specialist hour long postnatal examination that I offer ladies following both vaginal or c-section deliveries. It assesses how your posture, back and pelvis, pelvic floor muscles and stomach muscles have recovered.
HEALTH
It’s also important to say, it’s never too late! Whether you are 6 weeks postnatal or in your 80s, muscles weakened by pregnancy can always be strengthened. I passionately believe that ladies deserve an in-depth consultation - it allows you to really talk about your pregnancy, birth and discuss your symptoms. No woman should be suffering with pelvic pain, abdominal weakness or separation, pelvic symptoms like leakage, prolapse, bowel constipation or bowel leakage. 60% of ladies will find a cure or improvement with physio alone - it should always be the first line option and I can also help to open doors to lots of other treatments available. So if you are noticing symptoms in every day life - avoiding that Zumba class you always loved, using pads while you go for a run, speak up! Contact me today to make an appointment - there is so much that can be done!

PARENTHOOD
Blooming children By Alison Duff
It is often said that caring for a child is like tending a garden, and being a parent is like being a gardener. Nature serves up an optimistic blueprint for the future landscape. Then time, nurture, nourishment and environmental factors contribute to the overall vista. However, every good gardener knows that despite their hours of toil, sweat, loving attention and patience - the garden blooms in a way they did not envision or expect. The same applies to parents. We lavish loving attention, willingly sacrifice sleep and attempt to develop the patience of a saint. We spend hours reading books and researching 'parenting' styles to influence the behaviour and development of our little people positively.
We often have pre-conceived ideas and hopes for who they will grow up to be. Then when they flourish, they thwart us! They are entirely different from how we imagined they would be. It is almost as if they grow up because of us but also despite us. In truth, it is not our job to chisel our child into a particular person. Our children do not belong to us. They are born with free will, personality, temperament and spirit that requires love and understanding to thrive. It is our job to provide a nurturing space that is safe, stable and full of love - a garden where infinite possibilities can blossom

INSTAGRAMMERS
Ever wondered what it takes to become a successful instagram influencer? 'Influencers' share content, building communities around topics such as lifestyle, their job or hobby, the clothes they wear or the stories they tell. Over four-fifths of sponsored content on Instagram is posted by females, which means insta-influencer marketing is very much dominated by us ladies! Olivia Crombie talks to four local instagrammers to learn how they made their insta pages so successful... Q. What made you decide to start your Instagram page? GW: I started my Instagram account originally so I could see friends and families pictures, but I then started following lots of cleaning accounts due to the cleaning Insta craze! A huge inspiration for me was the huge cleaning account @lynsey_queenofclean who is also from Peterborough. Georgia Ward

LC: I was passionate about cooking, family
and food. I posted about my food on my personal social media but didn't get a great reaction from friends and family. Since starting my page I have found a fantastic community who appreciate my cooking. A lot of my following now cook my recipes for their families. My followers have come to me for advice as they struggle to feed fussy eaters and now their children are eating meals again and loving my recipes.

Q. What 3 things does anyone starting an Instagram page need to know? GW: An Instagram page doesn't grow overnight, it takes time and a lot of effort! Don't compare yourself to others. everyone grows at different rates. If you are happy with what you are doing continue doing it. Don’t join Instagram to be famous, because followers can see through false people straight away. LC: Post content constantly, make your feed appealing and engage with people.
ND: Have fun and post what you love. Engage with your followers and other accounts in your Instagram community. Be patient – everyone is on their own journey so try not to compare your account to others. TN: Growing takes time and a lot

Q. What would you say is the key to being successful as an Instagram influencer? GW: The key to being successful is through dedication, consistency and making sure you are keeping your followers up to date with what you are doing through grid posts and stories. I recommend treating Instagram like a normal job if you wish to succeed - be disciplined by setting working hours.
LC: Be real and don't try and be somebody

ND: Be yourself - it’s hard to stand out within a community where everyone is sharing the same trend, so being yourself is your superpower! Never post and run; engaging with other accounts and making new friends is key. You’d be surprised how quickly you find yourself talking to people you’ve never met.

SLEEP
Sleep easy... Lack of sleep can affect your immune system, so getting quality sleep can help you fight illness. Your bed should be your sanctuary and your safe place. During this unsettling time, make sure it's comfy, clean and cosy to ensure you get the best nights sleep possible.

SLEEP
S
leep plays a major role in maintaining a happy mind and body. People have different sleep needs depending on various factors, but on average, seven to eight hours is recommended to ensure your immune system doesn't become compromised. Good, quality sleep is a natural immune booster and focusing on your sleep habits is really one of the best ways to strengthen your immune system and fight off infection. A calm bedroom and a calm mind breeds calm sleep. Or is it that simple? Nowadays, we have so many distractions which pull us away from winding down, that it’s no wonder so many of us can’t enjoy this basic human need. Your bedroom should be cool (between 60 and 67 degrees) and free from any light. Consider using blackout curtains or blinds, eye shades and ear plugs if needed. Try to stick to a sleep routine by going to bed and waking up at the same time. This helps to regulate your body's clock and can help you fall asleep and stay asleep for the night. The biggest distraction of all comes from our beloved mobile phones. As fascinating as it is to watch a video of a dog saying “I love you” or reading your friend’s status about their dinner, bedtime is a time for bed behaviour, not bad behaviour!
Instead, before bedtime, offload all of your thoughts and errands by writing them onto a piece of paper and leave it on your bedside table. Odds are, you’ll feel reassured and clear some space in your mind for some sweet dreams. Try to get exercise daily. There are many online workouts available from yoga to high intensity, so try to get into good habits of regular exercise. Vigorous exercise is best, but even light exercise is better than no activity. Try getting daily sunlight exposure by getting out at least once a day in the fresh air for a walk. If this is not possible, invest in an artificial bright light device or bulbs. However tempting it is to give in to medication or sleeping tablets, there is a better and more natural way to sink into slumberland. Sleep should be natural, so it makes sense that natural remedies are the best answer. Ditch the builder’s tea for a delicious cup of chamomile herbal tea which soothes the nervous system to aid better sleep. It has been used as a solution for insomnia for centuries. Add some luxury to your sleep routine with lavender essential oil. Combine four drops with 20ml of carrier oil and mix in a nice, warm bath. Alternatively, use a couple of drops on your pillow to soothe, balance and relax at night. Sleep tight folks!
Your body needs time to shift into sleep mode, so spend the last hour before bed doing a calming activity such as reading. If you have trouble sleeping, avoid electronics before bed or in the middle of the night. QueenBee magazine

RECIPE
Cauliflower Rice FOR 4–6 This is a brilliant alternative to rice. Gluten-free, very simple and something really quite different. It’s just like rice but with bags more nutrition, less carbohydrate and, dare I say it, more flavour. This rice is ideal for serving with curries and I like to add the turmeric for a little colour, but it can easily be omitted. THE BITS • 1 large cauliflower, chopped very finely • 1 tablespoon olive oil or vegetable oil • 1 teaspoon ground turmeric • 1 tablespoon water • 1 teaspoon sea salt DO IT Make sure that your cauliflower is very well chopped. The easiest way is to put it into a food processor and pulse about five times, until it resembles rice. Any big bits can be picked out and kept for a later pulsing.
A great recipe idea from Lee Watson of ‘The Beach House Kitchen’ and author of Peace & Parsnips. Peace & Parsnips by Lee Watson, published by Michael Joseph, £20

Heat the oil in a frying pan on a medium-high heat and begin to fry your cauliflower. Stir it regularly, and after 5–7 minutes, when the cauliflower is getting a little colour, add the turmeric and water. Continue cooking for another 5 minutes, until the cauliflower has become tender but still has a bit of bite to it. Season with salt and serve
TEDDI GIFT TALKS GUIDE
Teddi is a local drag artist with her hand and mouth firmly on the pulse. She is never one to shy away from the limelight and always has her opinions ready and raring to go! Here she talks about spring-cleaning your business branding.
Re-birthing your business
S
o, we are now into spring! Where has the time gone? Two moments ago we were living our best lives and finding someone to kiss at midnight – now we are a quarter of the way through the year! Spring is always an interesting time of year. Spring-cleaning I’m sure is the latest trend, especially for the likes of Mrs. Hinch, but do you ever do a spring-clean of your business and possibly your branding too?
Now might be the right time for you to really think about your brand and if you need to give it a restorative rebirth.
I am the lead event organiser of The Peterborough Biscuit, which means I see an awful lot of branding and as a marketer by day, I know branding very well. Now might be the right time for you to really think about your brand, your business and if you need to give it a restorative rebirth. I am not talking a complete overhaul here, but are there services that you don’t need to offer to consolidate what you do?
Are there clients that you simply don’t wish to deal with any more? Maybe you’ve fallen out of love with your logo or your aims and goals no longer reflect what your business does? Many marketers will tell you that your brand needs a refresh. I would tend to disagree unless it makes sense to do so. If your business has expanded and you are no longer a micro-business, you may need a more corporate logo to drive business forward. If that is the case, then a logo redesign may be required. However if your logo reflects what you do at all levels, then leave it alone. At the end of the day it’s your business and you do what you want with it! Spring can be a fabulous time for you to think about a business rebirth, whether that is sprucing up of your services, your operations or even your logo. But make sure you are doing it for the right reasons QueenBee magazine

LIFE
Nothing but the tooth By Louisa Parr
Peterborough lady Louisa Parr tells us what it's like to live with Parkinson's disease...
I know that I'm not going to get better, I’ve accepted that. But I’m also aware that I still have choices too.
H
ave you ever dreamt that all your teeth have fallen out? Apparently, the interpretation of such a vision denotes our fears about getting old or of feeling unattractive. I’ve woken from this most unpleasant of dreams myself, feeling very distraught and completely discombobulated.
right down and my speech is slightly slurred.
On waking I was bursting for a wee, so headed for the loo and as I passed the bathroom mirror, I checked out my smile. Once satisfied that all thirty two of my gnashers were still in their rightful place and thankful that it had only been a dream... I returned to my bed.
I know that I'm not going to get better, I’ve accepted that. But I’m also aware that I still have choices too. With the arrival of Springtime and all its new beginnings, I have consciously made the decision to start looking after myself better. I have the freedom to choose what food I eat, like more fruit and vegetables, less sugar and saturated fats.
I suppose most people worry about the ageing process, it happens to us all, eventually. But for me personally, it seems that the fear of getting old before my time has dominated my thoughts far more than it should. I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease twelve years ago, at the age of forty two. For a long time the condition hasn’t stopped me from doing the stuff I’ve wanted to do, nor has it dictated how I should live my life. Lately however, I've noticed that my body is behaving differently. Simple tasks are becoming increasingly challenging as my limbs are stiff and painful. My movements have slowed 22

Accepting my limitations has been real tough as far as how, where and what I can successfully tackle and accomplish is concerned. I have seriously felt older than my years, it’s no wonder I’ve been dreaming about having no teeth!
Exercise more... swimming is my favoured choice. Avoid stress (whenever possible). Keep attending my art classes and singing group. Stop caring about what other people think! By implementing these simple changes, it’s a known fact that most of them will help slow down the progression of Parkinson’s. It won’t all be fluffy bunnies and daffodils, I am mindful of that. I can't stop this b*stard disease, but I sure as hell can stand up to it! So ‘do one' Parkinson’s, I've just bought myself a lovely new electric toothbrush and I intend on using it for quite some time yet

HAIR
By Kai Wan
Finally, after what seemed to have been a long winter of relentless storms, we now head to the promise of warmer weather and the season of renewal and growth.
micro-dermabrasion in-salon treatment is particularly effective at helping create the perfect environment for hair growth. It gently exfoliates the layer of dead skin cells, whilst at the same time actively stimulates the scalp with a fresh, tingling sensation, drawing more blood to the area. The service can also be backed up at home with a home-care ritual.
This leads me to think about how our hair is constantly going through a cycle of renewal and growth and how you can help your locks to blossom and bloom from the roots up.
Now, I’ve looked at ways in which we can help promote healthy hair growth on the outside, but what about from the inside out? As always, the starting point to health is through a balanced diet of protein, vitamins and minerals. As hair is made up of protein, make sure you're including enough protein sources in your diet. The minerals Zinc and Selenium and the vitamin Biotin are always key ingredients for healthy hair growth and as our nails are made of the same stuff as our hair, it's a double whammy - your nails will benefit too!
We naturally shed between fifty to one hundred hairs each day. A new hair is then generated from your hair follicle and grows for several years before the follicle becomes dormant. Once again, the hair falls from your head and the cycle continues. So, the best way to take care of healthy hair growth is to start at the roots and the condition of your scalp. I recommend keeping the scalp clean and removing dead skin cells which could potentially temporarily block dormant hair follicles. This ensures a good blood supply to the scalp to aid cell production which is essential. There are also dermabrasion or exfoliating treatments available that help clear the scalp. Nioxin is a brand dedicated to scalp health, hair renewal and thicker locks and their 24

When styling hair to look thicker and fuller, try adding a volume mousse or gel to the root area and using a radial brush to lift the hair upwards, directing the hairdryer underneath. There are many brands on the market that claim to aid in thick, fuller hair so ask your stylist about what they have on offer. Happy spring hair ladies!

hilst researching spring 2020’s best makeup trends, one word was at the forefront of my mind - FUN.
2019 saw the re-introduction of neon to clothing ranges, and 2020 is making no exceptions. Apologies to those who like minimalist looks but gone are the days of 'no-makeup' makeup and subtle eyes. Spring 2020 seems to be the time for you to experiment with bold colours and striking looks. Get digging out your coloured eyeliners and bright neon’s, because 2020 is all about glossy textures, sparkle and highly pigmented shades. I have selected my favourite spring 2020 makeup trends and products that will help you achieve your desired look to ensure your face looks fresh off the runway
All products featured are vegan and cruelty-free.

Spring
makeup trends
2020 Wet look glossy lips
Gloss was a heavy feature in Chanel’s spring 2020 fashion show, not just on the lips, but on the face, skin and eyes! A clear gloss can be used on your eyelids, cheekbones or even down the bridge of your nose to create a more natural and subtle fresh faced makeup look. If you are after a little more colour on your lips, layer gloss over your favourite matte lipstick or even on top of a tinted lip balm for added moisture. > Get the look: Charlotte Tilbury Latex Love Cannes Tropez lip gloss £24.

Neon shadow
Neon clothing was a huge trend in 2019 and somehow neon’s have found their way into makeup trends in 2020. Paris fashion week saw neon eyes as a strong feature on the runways, whether it be a vibrant all out shadow look, combined with other shades or used as a liner to add a subtle nod to the neon trend. The ‘sunset’ trend seems hot for 2020, with a gold or white inner corner, bright yellow centre and a striking orange in the outer corner. > Get the look : Beauty Bay Jawbreaker Palette £54 (below) KVD Vegan Beauty Limited Edition 'Vegan Love' Eye Shadow Palette £28.90 (right)
Glitter Smokey eye
Move over matte-smoky eye, the glitter smoky eye is here for spring. It’s time to level up the classic dark brown/black smoky eye that has been around for years and add some shimmer. Prime your eyelids to ensure your shadow stays on your lids, topped with a shimmery silver shadow and a smoked-out liner on your waterline and under-eye. Tap some glitter underneath your eyes to finish the look. > Get the look: Elf Cosmetics Everyday Smoky Eyeshadow Palette £10.

BOUDOIR
VIP Boudoir I’m on a mission to empower you to love yourself! VIP Boudoir is more than just a photo shoot in your delicates, it’s a full-on confidence booster. By Lucy Warren • lucytakesphotos.com
T
here’s something about Boudoir photography that I love, it’s rare to experience a private moment with someone that can change how that person sees themselves. The client in front of me could have any reasons for having boudoir photos taken; they could be a new mum, a cancer survivor, they might have achieved a significant weight loss or perhaps they just need a pick-me-up. To be part of that moment with you is my privilege. Posing for a stranger in your underwear will probably seem very daunting to most people. I make every effort to get to know you over a coffee before the shoot and encourage you to create a playlist of your favourite tunes to play on shoot day, you can even bring a friend! A relaxed model makes for great photos. I want to make the shoot a memorable day out, with professional hair and make-up (exactly the way you like it). Have a natter and a giggle, maybe a little wine and just be a model for an hour. I can pose you no matter what body type you have and give you curves in the right places so you can take home beautiful photographs showcasing your attributes. “The experience helped me feel better about myself and gave me a real boost. Lucy gave me a day to remember and treasure. The photographs blew my husband away, his eyes and smile said it all” I feel good when others feel good and that is why I want to work with as many women as I can. We rarely give ourselves enough self-love. Think of a boudoir shoot as a bit of therapy, but
“Lucy put me at ease as soon as the dressing gown was flung off! She guided me and took all the time in the world with me. I felt uplifted. I was upset when the day ended, it was just all so lovely, every aspect.”
it’s fun and different too. I know you’ll enjoy the shoot and you won’t be able to stop yourself from smiling when you see your professional digital photographs > Find out more: visit lucytakesphotos.com or call Lucy on 07572 923922. QueenBee magazine

W
ith the season of new life and new beginnings upon us, I want to tell you about the type of training that will make you feel like a spring chicken - Functional Training! As the name suggests, Functional Training involves “activities requiring multidirectional movements as well as the simultaneous co-ordination of a variety of muscle groups." For now Your body is designed to move in a multi-directional way, so it makes sense to improve the body’s ability to do this and it's never too late to start!
For later life There are many benefits to Functional Training and they are for everyone. These include helping to minimise loss of strength while improving balance, mobility, co-ordination, kinesthetic awareness and many other functional attributes associated with aging. Every year, many people suffer severe injuries because of trips and falls - a lot of these could be prevented by including specific movements into your daily routine > Yaba offers personal and group training as well as Health and Fitness retreats. Find out more by emailing yaba@teamafful.com Here are two examples of simple functional exercises to include into your own routine: 1. Overhead press sit to stand
Works: legs, glutes, core, triceps, shoulders, hip mobility, balance.
Do you ache after a couple of hours gardening? Do you groan and grunt when you get out of bed or a car? Do you struggle going upstairs without holding on to the rail? If the answer is yes, then doing Functional Training movements regularly may prevent common complaints and will condition the whole body to help you carry out your day-to-day activities.
Works: Legs, glutes, core, balance, coordination, shoulder & hip mobility.
Using the traditional forms of training equipment such as cross trainers and strength machines are still hugely beneficial for health, however they are limited in their movement ranges and fall short of training the body in the multi-directional movement which you require in your everyday life.

How to avoid a spring sprain! By Tola Macaulay
S
pring is here at last and many of us are preparing for sports mania! From running, netball, football racquet sports and more, there are plenty of spring activities for people of all ages to enjoy. Whether recreationally or competitively, this is a great time for adults to get in shape and we recommend taking the necessary steps to prevent injuries. Unfortunately, spring is the time of year when we see more injuries including ankle sprains, muscle pulls, hamstring strains, shin splints, knee injuries, and tennis elbow. Injuries can occur due to lack of conditioning the muscles and joints, and many of these injuries are preventable. Here are TMacLife’s top 5 steps to prevent injuries this season: 1. Schedule a pre-participation physical exam. This can screen for potential injury risks like muscle imbalances, soft tissue trigger points or poor flexibility. 2. Stretch muscles and allow at least 30 seconds in each stretching position. Once the muscles are properly stretched, warm up with jumping jacks, walking or running in place for about three to five minutes. Try to get at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity every day. This could include walking, cycling, swimming, weight lifting, pilates or martial arts.
3. Train and condition. If you have not been consistently active this winter, condition the body and start training the muscle groups used in the sport in the weeks before playing. For example, tennis players can work on shoulder strengthening and flexibility exercises and golfers can work on lower back flexibility and stretching. 4. Have the proper equipment. Selecting the proper equipment such as shoes, clothing or a helmet for your specific sport and using the equipment properly for each activity is important. Each sport has unique clothing and sports equipment that can help reach an athlete’s highest potential during physical activity and help prevent injuries. Always remember to replace poorly fitting, worn, or old equipment. 5. Body awareness. Learn to recognise when the body is fatigued. Muscles that are fatigued lack the protective mechanisms in the body and increases risk for injuries. Rest and take a break and use this time to get some much needed hydration. Finally, always cool down and stretch all the muscles used. Stretching at the end of physical exercise is just as important as stretching before.

eeds are a true symbol of new life and a humble reminder to us all that so much is possible, even in the most unlikely places.
Lucy Grace is our green-fingered allotment manager and busy mum of two. Advocating all things natural, she loves gardening, is a master at veg growing and makes her own organic cleaning products and herbal teas.
A few seeds can turn a space into something bright, beautiful and nourishing, growing from even the most miniscule cracks in a pavement, a life force with ultimate determination. Growing into plants that strive to replenish our air whilst feeding us, the bees and the butterflies, and participating in a circle of life far bigger and far more mysterious than we can fathom. This is the intricate design of nature; from the decay of the past, a new future is born.
As the sunshine has unveiled itself once more, welcoming us into the garden and into the new season, we’ve been getting busy sewing the seeds that will flood the QueenBee allotment with life - turning winter’s bleak scene of empty, leafless beds into rich, lush arrangements of greenery, vegetables and flowers. This year we’ve also sewn a plentiful amount of ornamental plants to colour the environment and as an offering to insect life, such as gerberas, cornflowers and phlox. There is so much knowledge and expertise out there, accessible to all of us. Whilst this is great, it can also imply that gardening is complex or difficult, requiring the pursuer to have skill and technique. But the truth is that sewing a seed is the most simple thing you can do – give it a go this spring and see what comes to life!

3D-Lipo Ultimatepro at The Beautiful Truth by Kathryn Grace
I
was very excited when Annalisa, Clinical Director of The Beautiful Truth Salon & Skincare Clinic in Peterborough asked me to come in and try out their brand new 3D-Lipo Ultimatepro treatment. I'd already heard about this cutting-edge technology that everybody is talking about, which can work on multiple areas; buttocks, thighs, stomach, backs and arms. If you are thinking of getting your body prepped for a summer holiday, a special event or just want to boost your self confidence, read on for a bit of a science lesson... So, what is 3D-Ultimatepro? This treatment has been designed to help target the body’s problem areas without the need for surgery or any invasive procedures. This safe, yet powerful alternative treatment to liposuction is pain free and has no downtime, providing targeted fat removal, skin tightening and cellulite reduction treatments. I was intrigued to see what this latest body sculpting treatment was all about! I discovered that it involves four different options and methods for destroying fat cells and improving the appearance of problem areas Cavitation, Cryolipolysis for fat reduction, Radio Frequency for skin tightening and Dermology for cellulite reduction. Combining these treatments in treated areas can mean less fat, tighter skin and less cellulite.
Cryolipolysis is when the fat cells are frozen - the extreme cold aims to destroy fat cells, which can then be 'disposed of' by the body naturally in the weeks after the treatment (this is why drinking lots of water after treatment is recommended to help flush out the destroyed fat cells). I was surprised to find that after my taster treatment I had lost 2cm from my waist and the texture of my skin seemed smoother - imagine what the recommended 6-8 weekly treatments could do! True results become visible between two and six months and treatments vary in price, so it's best to have a pre-treatment consultation to enable The Beautiful Truth to set a tailored treatment plan especially for you > To book your consultation call 01733 555540. You can also watch classic theatre from the RSC, the west end and the Globe at marquee.tv. This is another subscription service online that gives you access to some incredible performances. There will be tons of other services like this popping up over the months and many people are looking into using Zoom and other apps to share their shows. Keep your eyes peeled on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for further announcements from us and other companies. If you have booked tickets to a show that has been postponed, or cancelled, and you can afford it, I’d urge you to donate the ticket cost back to the company instead of asking for a refund. These sorts of gestures will help small companies keep ticking over as they struggle to cope without performances and live audiences. In a few months time we’ll all be able to emerge into the world again, bleary eye’d and ready for some live theatre. And when we do, there’ll be some incredible stuff just waiting to be seen. Keep your eyes out for announcements from Lamphouse Theatre, Peterborough Mask Theatre and Westwood Musical Society concerning re-scheduling of their recently postponed events. In the meantime, happy watching and we’ll see you soon! QueenBee magazine

Orton Waterville • £625,000 A beautiful family home with Ferry Meadows being only a short walk away.
BREXIT Last year the property market saw a slower process with the focus being on Brexit and what effect it would have on house values. This has since changed and the start of the year saw a huge increase in property listings and sales. MY PREDICTIONS I believe we will continue to see a rise in the property market, with Spring being the season when traditionally most vendors decide the time is right to market their property.

Q: My friend constantly criticises me and says I spend too much time with a new partner. She always says 'I’m lucky' about my career despite knowing how hard I work.
Lizzie Benton, blogger at Lizaboo Ponders, and Host of The SELF Development meetup is a passionate advocate of personal development and loves to help our readers with their personal dilemmas.
Good friendships should make you thrive and blossom, and make you feel good about who you are and what you’re doing.
If I didn’t know better, this sounds a little to me like the green-eyed monster is rearing its head in your friendship. However, there are a few ways in which you can approach this. The first thing I would do is have a very frank and honest chat with your friend to understand where her feelings are coming from. Ask her to explain some examples of when you’re spending too much time with your partner. You may realise this is truly the case, and that you need to set aside some quality friendship time too. But if your friend can’t give some solid reasons for her emotions, this to me sounds like she is getting carried away with comparing herself against you. It’s a hard reality when you realise that not all your friends want the best for you. Yet, too many of us
remain in friendships out of loyalty to the time we’ve been friends, rather than the quality of the friendship. This friendship may have come to its natural end, and you have to consider what you want with your life, and if your friend is on board to support you. Admittedly this can be incredibly hard, as letting go of a friendship is also like a small bereavement. You miss what you once had. Good friendships should make you thrive and blossom, and make you feel good about who you are and what you’re doing. There are enough critics in the world, without your own friends being one of them. As they say, when a flower doesn’t bloom, you fix the environment in which it grows, not the flower. Don’t stay with people who make you feel bad about living life your way, embrace those who lift you up and give you those good vibes > Send me your dilemma: Email: lizziebenton@live.co.uk or visit my website www.lizaboo.co.uk and ‘Ask Boo’ QueenBee magazine

DATING
Why do we fall in love in spring? I love the winter. Snuggly jumpers, log fires and mulled wine – everything feels so cosy and right when the doors are locked, the curtains are drawn and you are settled in for the night. However, come March, as the weather is warmer and the evenings are lighter, dating agencies always see an increase in enquiries and people joining as the weather starts to improve. So why do people start to look for love in the spring? And do your chances of finding the elusive one increase? By Michelle Begy, Matchmaker & Head Hunter, Ignite Dating
T
here are many psychological reasons. In the first place, our mood improves. It won’t be a surprise to learn that more people suffer from depression, or Seasonal Affective Disorder in Autumn and Winter and start to pick up again in the spring. Reduced sunlight can cause a drop in serotonin levels (also known as the happy hormone) with levels increasing as the evenings become lighter. This gives us the impetus and hope to go out and find our beau. The weather is warmer, so we naturally wear less clothes. We aren’t quite in bikini season just yet, but short skirts and capped sleeve tops start to make an appearance. This makes women more attractive to men as more of the body is on show. There are also physical reasons that we start to awaken in spring. Men’s testosterone starts

to peak in February after winter, giving then the biological urge to go out and procreate. This isn’t literally their mind set, but how their bodies react to the different seasons. We usually start exercising more in spring; that early morning run seems a little easier when there isn’t snow on the ground and it’s not quite so dark. Exercise is a natural mood enhancer so it makes us want to be more sociable and gives us the confidence to get out there and start meeting new people. So if you are single, now is the time to get out there and mingle! There are many options when you are wanting to date, from apps to satisfy every niche desire (uniform dating and forces dating being the most popular!) to traditional online and offline dating agencies. Before you dive into the online melee, consider choosing an offline agency which can take the stress out of dating. They take time getting to know what you like and interview and ID check every match before you get to meet them. If you are looking to date differently, why not have a chat with Ignite Dating and see how we can help you? > Visit www.ignitedating.co.uk or call Michelle on 0333 366 0640. QueenBee magazine

Embracing change We can often benefit from fresh starts and new beginnings; clarifying our thoughts and embarking on new adventures. However, the fear of change can stop us.
M
anaging change can be tricky; whether its adapting to a new role as a parent, starting a new job or even beginning a new hobby.
Steph Williams is a qualified psychological wellbeing Practitioner based in Peterborough. She provides private one to ones, supporting anyone with mental health and wellbeing difficulties.
Although we are programmed to feel comfort from things which are familiar and consistent in order to survive; change is also required for growth and progression. Here, I suggest a couple of techniques that can help ground you whilst enduring change and the unfamiliar. Meditation... Is a great way to clarify our thoughts and focus our attention. There are many misconceptions and stereotypes of meditation, one being that you have to be sitting cross legged in a tranquil environment, this is not always the case! Simple mindful techniques for two minutes can help you to remain focused and keep calm. One technique you can use is called Present Moment Focus.
This entails using all five of your senses to bring you back to the here and now. Try and ask yourself what can you feel whilst reading this magazine? Take notice of the ground beneath your feet, is it soft or hard? Notice the comfort of the chair supporting your back. Perhaps you can hear some birds outside? Maybe you're drinking a cup of tea? Notice what the temperature of the tea feels like in your mouth and the warm sensation of steam on your face as you take a sip. It’s natural for your mind to pull away when doing this, simply acknowledge where your thoughts have gone and bring them back to the sense that you are focusing on. Mindful breathing... Is an additional technique that can help us to both relax and remain focused. Taking several deep breaths in through your stomach counting for 4 seconds, holding for 2 and slowly releasing for 6 can help calm you during those times of uncomfortable change

FINANCE & BUSINESS
LeeP Accountants guide to Spring-cleaning your finances Spring - it’s the season of fresh ideas, galvanising yourself to make a change or to declutter. This applies to your finances as well! If you’ve been meaning to do one of the following for months, then now is the time to do it for that 3-step guide to inner peace:
Polly, our PwC qualified chartered accountant gives sound business and financial guidance along with advice on how to best run your business – it’s a “financial arm around you when you need it”.
We recommend our clients to put away 20p for every £1 of income they receive into a separate savings bank account. 58

1. Set up that new bank account to save for your taxes, unexpected bills or a rainy day. This is especially important if you run a business. We recommend our clients to put away 20p for every £1 of income they receive into a separate savings bank account. That way, it’s in a place that you can’t accidentally spend, it’s earning you a bit of interest and it’s already there waiting for when the tax man comes knocking. Opening a savings account is super easy and you can even do it online with many banks 2. Did you know that if you or your spouse earn less than the full £12,500 personal allowance amount (that’s the tax free amount that every one is entitled to earn before they pay tax), then you can apply to transfer some of the unused portion to

the higher earning spouse so that they save tax and it’s not wasted? It’s called Marriage Allowance and you can apply online at www.gov.uk/ apply-marriage-allowance 3. I f you have a variety of loans, credit cards, finance agreements and overdrafts that you’re struggling to get on top of, why not get someone to help you consolidate it into one monthly payment which will often be at a lower interest rate than a bunch of separate payments? Some research on www.moneysavingexpert.com is likely to yield some good rates and is much easier than people think to do > If you need further practical advice on your business finances call LeeP Accountants on 01733 699033 or email contact@leepfinancial.co.uk.

FASHION
It's all in the detail Michelle Abbott @maison_abbott
M
ost things, even classic, timeless pieces, have 'a moment’ every few seasons and currently, the accessory in the spotlight is the scarf. A scarf is an essential for many of us; providing warmth, protection from the elements, comfort, and something to roll up and use as a makeshift pillow or blanket. For some of us however, it’s purely for adornment - that finishing flourish that completes an outfit, adds a certain je ne sais quoi, a touch of chic, or a pop of colour against the skin. As we welcome the first signs of Spring, a scarf is a key accessory in our wardrobe, but how should we wear it, and what are the options in terms of shape?
The pashmina style scarf is a timeless, versatile piece which can be worn as a long draped scarf, folded in half and looped or wrapped around multiple times for a fuller look. The great thing about scarves is their versatility, collectability and the ease with which they can transform the plainest outfit into something remarkable. You’ll probably own several already which you can simply rediscover and enjoy, but if you are looking to treat yourself, look everywhere from charity shops where you can find the most beautiful classic silk squares, to the high street. For something truly original, try pre-loved stores for a great deal on a designer classic that you’ll love forever
Michelle x
The simplest way to elevate your look is to take a classic silk square, roll it diagonally and tie it around your neck with a single knot for pure effortless chic inspired by countless style icons over the years. If you want a bit more drama, consider a longer, thinner scarf and tie it into a pussy bow, which gives instant impact to any outfit. Above from left to right: London fashion silk scarf, Justaddstyle £120. Orange pashmina, kittenbeachwear.com £45. Dolce & Gabbana purple leopard scarf, Timpanys.com £126. Right: Patterned satin scarf, H&M £9.99.

INSPIRING WOMEN
How I make it work QueenBee talked to local lady Shammy Marjara about her long-standing career in care. Shammy is regarded by many as the pioneer for residential care homes in Peterborough her hands on philosophy to personal care is still evident in the company today. Q: Tell us about your business Peterborough Care is a family run organisation providing nursing, residential and dementia care to older people within residential care settings.
Shammy Marjara is a Registered Nurse and the founder of Peterborough Care who operate Residential and Nursing Homes for older people. Shammy started the company in 1984.
We operate 5 care homes all within Peterborough which are; Broadleigh Care Home, Lavender House Care Home, The Maltings Care Home, Park Vista Care Home and the recently opened Thorpe Wood Care Home. Q: What made you decide to open a residential care home? When we moved to Peterborough in the late 70’s, there were no private residential care homes for older people. My career and passion had always been to look after the elderly. I wanted to open and establish a home that could allow me to continue with my passions but to also create a culture that put family values at the forefront of everything I did. I opened Broadleigh Care Home in 1984 and I am so proud that those same values are still embedded throughout all of our Care Homes.

Q: What’s the most rewarding aspect of your business? To have the opportunity to get up everyday and care for people. My focus has always been on the hands on personal care given to individuals and it is the part of my business I enjoy doing the most. Q: What’s the best advice you’d give someone who wants to set up in business? Setting up and then running a business takes time, dedication, determination and sacrifice but above all, if you have a love and passion for what you do, that will come naturally and will continue to drive you forward. It is also important to have people around you who share your same values. I have been very fortunate that we continue to have a lot of long standing staff within the organisation. Q: What do you like to do to relax and switch off? Watch my beloved Peterborough United, although I’m not sure if that is switching off (come on The Posh!) > Visit peterboroughcare.com for more information on residential, nursing and dementia care in Peterborough.

WELLNESS
Get help with hip and knee pain
By Nazleen Reed Bsc (Hons) MCSP HCPC, Charted Physiotherapist, Pilates Teacher, Founder & Director of UPL
H
ip and knee pain are commonly seen in our Physiotherapy practice and can cause you restrictions and pain. These lower limb joints tend to get worn before the upper limbs because we place most of our weight through these joints when walking and standing. Like anything that is mechanical, if you load areas excessively they will complain. I'm not saying that you should not walk or run which is the opposite of what I would advise you to do. I would advise you to reinforce your joints - this doesn’t mean you wear supports or braces, but use your natural enforcements your muscles. Muscles around your hips and knees can be weak, therefore the joints tend to be aggravated and give you pain. This can be felt during walking, but there could also be several other reasons for your pain including arthritis, bursitis, tendonitis, cartilage tears and patella Femoral Dysfunction. Each of these issues can be treated individually but what they all have in common is muscle imbalances around the hips and knees. The common muscle groups that tend to be weak are gluteal (buttocks), quadriceps (front of thigh) and core stabiliser (abdominal muscles). Exercises given would be similar, focusing on strengthening the muscles and improving mobility.
incorporating these muscle groups. If you would like to receive this programme, we are giving it away free to QueenBee readers. Contact us on the details below and quote 'QueenBee Hip & Knee programme' and we will send the programme to you by email or post. If you are worried that your joint pain is not due to muscle imbalances but something more serious, get in touch and speak to one of our Musculoskeletal specialists. We will be happy to give a free 10-minute telephone consultation. Why not take advantage of our introduction offer for a Hip and Knee MOT? This is an assessment specific to this area where imbalances can be identified; you will get a video report of the assessment with advice and guidance. This is a 20-minute appointment which usually costs £25 but QueenBee readers will get a discounted rate of just £20. A specialised assessment of your hip and knee will ease your concerns and get you back to doing things you enjoy like walking, running and playing with your children!
“Highly recommended! After just my initial consultation my knee is feeling so much better already. To be honest I'm shocked at how less painful it is today. Expert knowledge and fantastic service.” Wendy Benton (mum that runs).
