OH SO SPECIAL SUNGLASSES Now the sun has started to show it’s face (a little bit anyway!) we have a great excuse to invest in a new pair of sunglasses. We particularly love this Gucci pair from Tortoise + Black. Retro round shaping, web detailing and “G” icons on the temples are a nod to authentic Italian heritage. The colour palette enhances the vintage look of this fine metal frame, with gradient lenses giving a classy finish. We love ‘em! £220. > For more details visit www.tortoiseandblack.com

prison an inspiration
By Anna Morrish
Y
ou may not consider a place such as prison as somewhere that would evoke a sense of inspiration, however, the opposite may be in fact be true.
HMP Peterborough is a local category B prison, which is operated by Sodexo Justice Services. It’s the country’s only dual purposebuilt prison for men and women, who are kept separate at all times. The staff at the prison work hard to build connections with external organisations to provide residents with even greater opportunities upon release. Some of which result in jobs, recruitment, funding, support and so much more.
Enrolment
Having been given the opportunity to visit the prison, have a guided tour and speak with some of the residents, something was ignited within me. This was the start of my journey… Following many discussions, I became a business mentor, attending the prison on a monthly basis to provide business workshops. Those residents who were nearing release and had a passion for business were able to attend my workshops to nurture their ideas, create a stringent business plan and 8
QueenBee Spring 2018
marketing strategy for when they were released. But, these workshops were more than just about business. We discussed their worries, fears and concerns, along with how prison had even saved their lives.
Finding your muse Every month I looked forward to meeting with the residents, as each time I could see their confidence grow, their passion for business increase and their desire for an improved lifestyle grow. It was truly inspiring and having the chance to be a part of that was so incredibly rewarding. Being involved with the prison also provided the opportunity to meet with other organisations who wanted to give back to the community. One such organisation was PoetsIn – a charity providing residents with the chance to create poems and stories that would help purge their inner-most thoughts and feelings. Essentially, they were using the power of words to rehabilitate and improve the mental wellbeing of residents. HMP Peterborough is always looking to improve the lives of their residents and I would recommend to anyone who has some spare time or the desire to help others to get involved. FASHIONFIX
with Alexandra Agboke
This issue we are very excited to introduce a brand new feature to the magazine QueenBee Fashion Fix - brought to you by lovely, local lady, Alexandra Agboke. A self-styled fashion agony aunt, Alexandra will be answering all your questions and offering top notch advice. So ask away... she’s here to help!
Q Can you advise me on which style of shoe would be suitable for both looking good and dashing after the kids? Muminthestix Alex “That’s a great question Muminthestix. I love wearing a heel but spent years feeling I had been demoted to flip flops or Converse for evermore. Of course, it does depend on your style personality but I’m guessing you are a bit like me and like stylish practicality so I’d say it’s all about the width or circumference of the heel and whether it straps or holds your ankle in. We don’t necessarily need to shy away from a heel - the key is to choose a more comfortable, solid one for every day wear so you feel stylish but confident, you won’t fall over or down a crack in the pavement as you race to the school gates!” 12
QueenBee Spring 2018
Q I’m am 40-years-old and struggle with dressing appropriately yet still being fashionable. Am I restricted due to my age? Louise, Milton Keynes Alex “An older woman who dresses well is far more attractive, in my opinion, than a superfashionable twentysomething. We have experience and wisdom to celebrate after all... when I hit this milestone I did a whole style upgrade. As we get older it’s about wearing more classic,
QueenBeefashion quality pieces that fit well and mixing them with fashionable items or colours to keep your look ‘current’. Take some time to define what makes you feel good and spend more on these pieces, you’ll be amazed at how you’ll start to feel, even around the fashionable youth. I love jumpsuits but I make sure they are tailored well and slightly more classic in design, then I wear them with a colourful, fun shoe or trainer to add some youth back in. Our forties is a super-cool age where we are old enough to know what suits us and young enough to rock it with panache and inspire our younger counterparts.”
Q I am making an effort to shop more sustainably but I’m finding it hard to find clothes that don’t look frumpy or make me look like a hippy! I want to shop more ethically, with British brands that use organic materials and are fair trade but still stylish. Any tips would be very welcome! Becky, Lincolnshire
oversized, linen dresses or cloth bags but I’m happy to announce that more and more brands are emerging with some really great on-trend designs. Reformation and Armedangels are two of my favourites with KowTow, Zady, Dagny and Beulah London as front-runners of the stylish yet sustainable brigade. However, not all these brands are British, especially if you want an edgier look, but as the key is to shop less too, this could offset the increased P&P.” > Have you got a fashion frustration? Drop us a line at fashion@queenbeemagazine.co.uk ^

THE FACE BEHIND THE BRAND MEET NICOLA FROM DIVERSITY BOUTIQUE IN OUNDLE
I
have always been a self-motivated person. Variety in my work is important as well as meeting new people.
Having created pop-up shops at private sports clubs and ladies pamper nights, I had always wondered what it would be like to have my own boutique. So when the opportunity arose, I jumped at the chance to fulfill a lifelong dream. Designing and fashion have always been a passion of mine and working with colour and shape is something that comes naturally. So, to celebrate two years of Diversity Boutique, we offer one-to-one advice as part of our free service helping individuals understand what suits their body shape. In celebration of two royal weddings taking place this year, Diversity Boutique has embraced a whole new range of products that incorporates on-trend colours and a structured look to create a regal theme. We have delicate, floral materials and lots of pink and navy at the core of the collection. Our very popular ‘Marble’ range is strong this season with so many styles and sizes covered. The new ranges, which include House of Scandinavia, Yest, Fransa, Garcia and Free/Quent, add a completely diverse, 16

complementary look, which is what Diversity Boutique is all about. Come in and let us help create the right look for you. > Find us at 2a St Osyths Lane, Oundle PE8 4BG. Follow us @Diversity Boutique ^

TEAR TROUGH FILLERS refreshes and rejuvenates tired eyes Dark circles and hollowing under the eyes is a giveaway of age and can make you look as if you’ve been up all night.
BEFORE
AFTER
Because of the sagging and shrinking of the delicate skin around the tear trough, it causes eye bags and dark shadows, which is hard to conceal with makeup. Smoothing those shadows and eye bags will help you look as if you’ve had a good night’s sleep, every night! Tear trough filler can give you an instant result as the dark shadows get ‘plumped out’ for a naturally renewed, rejuvenated face and a far more ‘awake’ look. Dr Beverley Brabbins of Newborough Cosmetic Skin Clinic in Peterborough offers this amazing treatment - the simple procedure that refreshes and rejuvenates tired eyes.

Q
ueenBee asks 3 local hair salon owners what’s hot for Winter hair trends...
> Lesley Hirniak
HOUSE OF HAIR AND BEAUTY Stanground www.houseofhairandbeauty.net
> Catherine Miller, MILLIE & CO Hampton Hargate T: 01733 344900 Parisian Nudes are ‘so hot’ for Spring hair. Nude hair is about to become your favourite hair colour trend. The Parisian hair colour is simple, natural looking but sophisticated. It is nude natural, the must-have for this colour is to be seen without being visible, luminous and contrasting. Parisian hair colour is unpretentious and sensual- deep brown with a lot of shine. It’s elegant, subtle and very wearable. Otherwise known as ‘French girl hair.’
Pastel tones are very much in at the moment for spring, with the lilacs and muted metallic tones. Loose waves and boho plaites also seem to be very popular this spring. Colours by our colour specialist Gina Barnes
Ombre and Balayage are also remaining hot for the Spring. Ombré: The word ombré in French means “twotoned,” and involves the gradual lightening of the hair strand, fading from darker (at the roots) to lighter (at the ends). The technique can be done with nearly any color-be it pink or grey-and can be customized to suit your taste. There are striking ombres and those which are subtler, but nonetheless the result is always chic and beautiful! Balayage: The word balayage in French means “to sweep” or “to paint,” and is a technique of freehanding soft, painted lines to create streak-free, sun-kissed highlights with less noticeable roots on the hair. The result? Natural-looking highlights that are customized to your taste! Balayage is also a low maintenance style, which is part of the reason why it’s favored among tastemakers and celebrities alike! The most beautiful thing about balayage is it’s customized for each person based on hair length, hair texture, skin tone, and desired level of maintenance ^

Donna Young LOCKS AND SHADES Yaxley www.locksandshades.co.uk This spring will see warmer colours dominating the colour palette again! Buttery blondes, caramels, chocolate browns and strawberry tones will be being used to warm up complexions, giving your hair the perfect spring time glow. Subtle baby lights (very fine highlights) will be making a come back too, perfect for face framing and that natural highlighted look. Natural textured hair is big news too. If you aren’t naturally blessed with a slight wave then fake it with some large barrel tongs or a waver and a good texturising spray ^

How I make it work
A
nna Morrish has ten years’ experience in the marketing industry and set up Quibble Content 2 years ago. She has a deep passion for quality content creation, along with a keen eye for digital marketing strategy and prides herself in her transparent approach to business.
QA QB What made you decide to set up Quibble Content? AM I started out in magazine publishing, later moving to the agency sphere and then into an in-house position. In each role, I always strived for more. I enjoyed seeing the difference I could make, but there was always something missing. From the experience I gained, I was able to understand what clients wanted, what agencies would usually deliver and how both online and offline could work together. Henceforth, Quibble Content was born – To bridge the gap and to create an honest approach to marketing that works. QB Where does the name Quibble Content come from? 24
QueenBee Spring 2018
AM I get asked this quite frequently, as it is an unusual, but memorable name. My dad always told me to question everything and that has been something I’ve lived by. I would rather be the person asking questions than sitting quietly with no clue what’s going on.No question is a stupid question and it’s much better to ask than shy away. In the work I do, asking questions is vital. Both the client and I need to work together towards the same goal, which requires communication and there can be no communication without questions. To “quibble” is to query or question something and content is simply my passion. QB What or who has been your biggest influence? AM My fiancé. Like me, he is very driven. I wouldn’t be where I am now without
his support. When I’ve experienced problems, he’s been there to pick me up and when Quibble experiences success he is the one who cheers me on. We’re the perfect team. I’m the creative, he’s the technical. QB What was the most difficult aspect of setting up your business? AM The hours necessary to make it a success. Setting up a business takes time and you have to wear so many “hats”. I’m working more hours than I ever have and harder than ever before, but I wouldn’t change it for the world. QB What’s been your biggest challenge? >
QueenBeeinspiringwomen AM Managing my time and learning to switch of to recharge my batteries. Having an office is great, but I have a home office too, so it’s very easy to just slip back into work on an evening or at a weekend. I am becoming stricter with myself and finally clawing back some time to relax, which is actually making me more productive. QB What do you wish you’d known before setting up your business? AM Being your own boss has its perks as you can manage your time as you wish. You can get your car in for an MOT during the week, you can wait in for a delivery or the electrician. But… There’s no such thing as an equal work / life balance. When you create a business, you are the business. You have to work hard to create the balance you’re happy with. QB What advice would you give to someone wanting to start their own business? AM If it’s truly what you want to do, just do it. Stop thinking about the “what ifs”. Save up, get investment, a grant or a bank loan and give it three months. Work as hard as you can, and if it is meant
to be it’ll work out. Just don’t hold back. QB Why has your business been so successful? AM I’m an incredibly driven person, but above everything else I’m honest. Honest to myself, friends, family and clients. I’ve built Quibble to be transparent, to explain every process we do and what we hope to achieve so all our clients can understand the value in the services we provide. QB What’s been the most rewarding aspect of running your own business? AM Being able to work with such a variety of clients. Getting to understand their businesses, their values and their stories. I’ve had the opportunity to meet so many new people and make long lasting friendships ^

Springtime at last Has anyone else noticed the influx of daffodils? It is a lovely reminder that spring has well and truly sprung and for me personally, daffodils are a great reminder of my beloved Nan. Spring is such a lovely season, what with the warmer weather and the days getting longer. There are so many wonderful craft and baking activities you can do with the children due to so many seasonal changes; from new leaves on the trees and blooming flowers to the excitement of Easter and baby animals being born. One of my favourite crafts (which doesn’t involve a lot of effort) is making tissue paper daffodils. Free templates are available online and yellow tissue paper can be bought for as little as £1 from The Works in town or even online.
By Jaymee Heaton
Another really quick activity you can do with young children is to make Easter egg nests. This is a simple, no-cook activity, it doesn’t take too long and there are not too many ingredients but they taste amazing!
EASTER EGG NESTS ALL YOU NEED IS: A bar of chocolate (milk chocolate works best but you can use dark or white) Shredded Wheat Chocolate mini eggs Cake cases METHOD: Melt the chocolate in the microwave or on the hob. runch the Shredded Wheat into small C pieces and then mix into the bowl of melted chocolate. Separate into the cake cases and pop two or three mini eggs into each nest. Pop into the fridge and leave to set for an hour before scoffing!

QueenBeefreebie One thing I love about Easter is the amount of activities that are available. The boys loved the Easter Egg Hunt at Sacrewell Farm last year. If you are looking for things to do, then do check out my blog and search for Easter activities at www.TheMumDiaries.co.uk It is probably worth a little mention that Sacrewell Farm’s ‘Open Farm Sunday’ falls on Sunday 10th June this year. It is a great opportunity to find out more about what happens on a working farm and where our food comes from. There are normally lot of activities and stalls and it is a really lovely day out. Again, there is plenty of information on my blog. I do hope you have a lovely spring time! ^

TAKE ON THE
ULTIMATE
By Anna Morrish, Co mmittee Member of Action Medical Research
DRIVING CH ALLENGE
S
ome of you may already be aware of the annual Scumrun, but for those of you who aren’t, here’s what you need to know…
Scumrun is an annual five-day team driving challenge, but it’s no ordinary challenge… Oh no. Those who take part do so in fancy dress and in specially, creatively, modified vehicles. Previous races have seen Rolls Royce, Mini, many a German V8, fire engines, decommissioned ambulances and so many more vehicles make the tremendous journey. Those who decide to take on trial of endurance, do so by travelling hundreds of miles across Europe to secret locations. That’s right. Secret. You don’t find out where you’re going until each morning of the race. Want to take part? What’s the criteria, we hear you ask… Anything and everything goes! It costs £250 to register and then all you need is a £500 banger and some creativity.
All in aid of charity By taking on this challenge and being submitted to all of the elements in a vehicle that is on its last legs, you’re not just testing your endurance, but also supporting a great charity. Over the years Scumrun’s participants have helped raise over £800,000 in funding to UK children’s charities and this year they’re doing it in aid of Action Medical Research. The money raised by each of the Scumrun teams will to help fund urgently needed research to save and change the lives of sick and vulnerable babies and children.
> This year’s event takes place between 17-21 May 2018. If you’re interested in entering this years’ Scumrun, want to know more about Action Medical Research, or wish to donate to this incredible cause visit Scumrun.action.org.uk ^ 32

Live the life you love, Love the life you live LOCAL LADY TRACEY YEARWOOD TELLS QUEENBEE HER MOVING AND INSPIRATIONAL STORY
L
et me introduce myself, I’m Tracey Yearwood, mum of 4, step mum of 2, Nanny to 1 and business owner of 2 thriving businesses.
I had a humble upbringing, one that was filled with love and laughter, both my parents worked hard to provide what they could for both myself and my brother. Sadly, Mum was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 43 and suffered ill health rendering her unable to work. Dad as her main carer took early retirement in 1998, to look after her. Unfortunately, in 2000, my dad was diagnosed with terminal bone cancer.
Just six weeks later, both Mum and Dad deteriorated and on the 18th July 2000, Dad passed away aged 60, one week later Mum passed away to be with her beloved, aged just 57. My parents had the most loving relationship, providing the foundations of a wonderful family unit and one that I would aspire to within my adult life. My Dad was my hero, and over time I was disappointed by my choices, sadly dating men who didn’t live up to the expectations set by my Dad. When I had my youngest daughter aged 40, I was working part time and just about making ends meet. After being bullied and sexually harassed within the workplace; the stress of which combined with suffering with postnatal depression led to the breakdown of my relationship, and a new level of low for myself. I decided I had to regain myself. From the sadness of losing my parents and the broken relationships which had left me feeling so lost. I vowed never to work for someone else again and to rebuild myself, for me and my children and so my journey began. In 2008, I met Jason, now my wonderful husband. We laugh about it now, but let’s just say he wasn’t looking for a

mum of 4, on the emotional journey I was on. This said, over time, with a little patience, we realised we were meant to be. The Ying to my Yang, me the Chalk to his Cheese. Those first few years were tough, Jason had been made redundant numerous times and we came close to losing our home due to an error on behalf of the Inland Revenue. It was during those years we were introduced to Network Marketing.
Over the years, we’ve helped 100’s of families, however for us it is the FREEDOM to be our own BOSS, work flexible hours that suit us and most of all give us the TIME to spend with our family, creating that family unit that I longed for after losing my parents.
“Work and fun are so intrinsically linked that you would find it hard to slog away at something unless there was a fun reward to enjoy”
We Shrink Bills, our network marketing business launched in 2009, and Connect Business Networking Ltd launched in 2017.
Through hard work, goal setting and a focus on our own personal development we have achieved many things including luxury holidays to Vegas and the French Alps as well as many spa breaks and UK weekends away.
The social aspect of business is important to me and a close friend recently said “Work and fun are so intrinsically linked that you would find it hard to slog away at something unless there was a fun reward to enjoy” ^

Childhood Depression is a Reality
A
ccording to research, almost one in four young people will experience depression before the age of 19, with a quarter of girls and nearly one in 10 boys showing signs of depression at 14. Moodiness in teenagers can be normal, but if they are withdrawing and seem disconnected from their friends too, it could be a sign of something more serious. Depression affects people in different ways, but symptoms can include: • not wanting to do things that they previously enjoyed • eating or sleeping more or less than normal • feeling irritable, upset, or lonely • being self-critical and feeling hopeless
How are you supposed to know how your child is feeling? Try to watch out for clues. Common triggers could be an upset such as falling out with an important friend or not doing as well in something as they’d hoped. These events may not seem a big deal to you, but they may be major for your child. Acknowledging they’re upset by listening and talking is really important. Sometimes planting the seed that you’ve noticed they’re not happy and are ready to talk when they are can set the ball rolling. If your child doesn’t want to talk to you, encourage them to talk to someone else they trust. Most importantly, listen to your instincts. If a voice is telling you something is wrong then don’t be afraid to seek help ^ > Here at the Young Persons Counselling Service we provide free, confidential counselling to 11 – 16 year olds across Peterborough. We’re here to help. Contact us on 0800 634 4395.
Just because you child may be experiencing one or more of these symptoms, it doesn’t mean they’re definitely affected by depression, but if you are concerned, make an appointment with them to see your GP to get a full diagnosis.

LIZZIE BENTON OFFERS ADVICE & GUIDANCE ABOUT REAL LIFE ISSUES
Q: SHOULD I FORGIVE MY FRIEND FOR SHARING A SECRET? I can imagine you’re feeling truly hurt by this as the trust you had in your friendship feels broken. But first, ask yourself if it was shared in a malicious way, or simply out of concern. If it was something that was to do with your health or wellbeing, your friend might have been trying to get advice from others in an attempt to help you. However, if it was shared out of gossip, then this is where you need to draw the line. Friendships should be our shining stars in the darkest of times, and if you feel as though you can’t be yourself around this person any more or rely on them, then you need to ask yourself why you’re still friends? We often stay in friendships out of fear of loneliness or because we don’t know how to end it without hurting anyone’s feelings – but the fact is – not all friendships are good for us.
> Send me your dilemma: Email: lizziebenton@live.co.uk or visit my website www.lizaboo.co.uk and ‘Ask Boo’ 44
QueenBee Spring 2018
It’s all well and good trying to continue a friendship because you’ve known each other for such a long time, but if there’s no longer trust, then the relationship is irreparable. Before you make any rash decisions, ensure to have an honest and open discussion about the situation. Understand the intentions of their actions, and you will soon know in your heart if you can forgive or whether you need to say goodbye. Keep an open heart and an open mind, and don’t let one bad experience put you off trusting others. I know only too well that not all friendships are great ones, and unfortunately, just like kissing the frogs to find your prince, you have to dig through the worms before you find your treasure. Some friendships are worth fighting for, but there are others we have to learn to let go of. lizaboo.co.uk ^

in being part of the solution,” explains Councillor Richard Ferris. “This is an exciting opportunity for a partnership approach to tackling one of the biggest environmental challenges we face.”
Plastic bottles contribute to the millions of tonnes of plastics that end up in the ocean every year, harming marine wildlife and spreading toxic chemicals. In the UK alone about 15 million bottles are used and discarded per day.
Tesco’s community funding scheme Bags of Help sees grants of up to £4,000, raised from carrier bag sales in Tesco stores, awarded to local community projects. The scheme has already delivered over £40 million to 9,700 projects across the UK ^
PECT wants to bring a new bottle reuse scheme to the city through promoting free tap-water refill points in cafes, shops, businesses and transport hubs.

A free app will be available to download, showing all participating locations and which will be used to monitor the impact and success of the project. “By helping people to refill and reuse their drinks bottles, we can encourage more environmentally-friendly behaviour, reducing the amount of plastic waste; promote more healthy lifestyles; and engage local businesses 48

Manners maketh the man
I
By Louisa Parr
I think that in todays society, the need to be a little more open minded about the way some people choose to live their lives is most important. But there are certain circumstances where I remain unconvinced.
the truth and to be mindful and respectful of others.
When I was a child I was taught the difference between right from wrong. My Dad was strict and what he said was the law. We didn’t argue with him, he was the Boss and my siblings and I never questioned his authority. We were taught to say please and thank you. There were no elbows allowed on the dinner table and we went without pudding if we didn’t eat all of our tea, regardless of whether we liked what was on our plate or not. We knew what it meant to share, to tell
Teaching generations to come the importance of manners, respect and common decency costs nothing. But at whose expense will it be if we don’t? Theirs of course! So, whilst we endeavour to nurture our little ones into becoming fine, upstanding members of the community, maybe we should remember one thing... trying to cajole our unwilling five year olds into eating brussel sprouts makes no difference to their future whatsoever some things will never change ^

his is the question I am asked all the time! Is it January? A week before? Or maybe it’s Christmas?
My answer is always the same; the cheapest time to book your holiday is April, when the following year’s holidays are launched. I truly love this time of the year, as it’s always so busy! Because prices are always great when you book early (and you have longer to save), it’s an odd feeling booking the next year’s holiday when you still haven’t had this year’s! But it’s totally worth the savings and the low deposit you pay when booking so far in advance. Want to get away at Easter? There are some great deals out there at the mo for places like Turkey, Cyprus and Spain and the weather will be in the low 20’s at best. Shorts and t-shirt weather and a lot better than here! Maybe you’re thinking of a May halfterm break. The whole of Europe will have opened up their airports and the weather will be great in most places by then. Maybe you are avoiding the school holidays so June is always a popular month for taking a break, just before the resorts fill with fun-loving students and all

SING FOR LIFE IS BACK!
S
ing for Life is back for 2018, once again raising money for the city’s much-loved Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice. Launching in May, the project will take 40 local women with a range of previous singing experience (including none) to rehearse over 10 weeks for a charity concert at the Cresset Theatre on 21st July. “I’m so pleased I got involved!” says Rachel Francis, who took part last year. “I would walk out of every rehearsal in a fabulous frame of mind, and the progress we made every week was incredible – it was so exciting! Standing on stage and performing in front of my friends and family was amazing, I’ll never forget that feeling! Add to that the fact you’re raising money for a brilliant cause, why wouldn’t you come along and find out more?” “Sing for Life is not about finding the next Adele; it’s about helping ordinary women find their voice” says William Prideaux, the project’s director. “So many people lack confidence or genuinely believe they can’t sing, but deep down just about everyone secretly has a favourite karaoke number, and – we promise – our very experienced music team will have you singing in no time!”
56
QueenBee Spring 2018
Sing for Life launches with introduction sessions at the Key Theatre on Thursday 10th May (7-9pm), Friday 11th May (7-9pm) and Saturday 12th May (10.30am-12.30pm). Absolutely no previous singing experience is necessary, just a willingness to step out of your comfort zone, get stuck in and give it a go! Whatever your starting point, over the 10-week project your singing will improve in leaps and bounds and - while you might not end up winning the X Factor or perform at Covent Garden - that’s a huge confidence boost and very liberating!
So, get in touch and get involved: there’s a whole new world waiting! • For further information or to register call 01733 425194 or email info@peterboroughmvchoir.org.uk • Rehearsals will be on Thursdays from 7.45pm-9.45pm at the John Mansfield Campus, Western Avenue, Peterborough PE1 4HX. • The Sing for Life concert will be at Peterborough’s Cresset Theatre at 7.30pm on Saturday 21st July 2018 ^

THE FAIRY STORY OF THE COMMON LAW WIFE
O
nce upon a time there was a lady and a man living together in unmarried bliss and then – they broke up. They were not the wise cohabiting couple, who has a Cohabitation Agreement drawn up when they start living together, and thinks about the sad but not impossible (1 out of 3 chance) consequences of a split and how they would divi-up, if the house they lived in is sold. No, these are the foolish cohabitees who thought that the law protected them, or rather the lady, who by this time has two children with the man, believes she will be protected but soon finds out cohabitation is very different to marriage. The number of cohabiting couples who face problems when they separate is increasing. This is because increasing numbers of people cohabit rather than marry but as previously stated in this column and elsewhere, “THEY DO NOT HAVE THE SAME LEGAL RIGHTS AS THEIR MARRIED COUNTERPARTS”.
YouGov has recently completed a survey of more than 1,000 cohabiting couples across the UK. 35% either believe they have the same rights as married couples or didn’t know. 76% had not heard of cohabitation agreements and only 2% had a cohabitation agreement in place. 35% were unaware if the property they owned together was either beneficial joint tenants or tenants in common. If you don’t know what the difference is, research it now. The solicitor who conveyed the house into your joint names when you bought it should have gone through the different options with you and created a trust deed if required. If only one of you is the legal owner, you have a whole set of other potential problems. Despite the huge implications of the outcomes of the different property ownership structures, the survey revealed that only 33% were given professional advice when purchasing their current home. This could make the difference in terms of thousands of pounds
to either one of you if the relationship breaks down. Whatever your circumstances, if you are living together and especially if you have children, a cohabitation agreement is essential as an insurance against a possible split. It would be wise to speak to a family specialist about this straight away ^ Belinda Smith is the owner and principal of Belinda Smith and Co., Family Law solicitors based at Asset House, 27-28 Thorpe Wood, Peterborough, PE3 6SR www.bscosolicitors.co.uk

pring is in the air, and that means fresh fruits and veggies are hitting the supermarkets .
• 250 ml coconut water • 125 ml mango juice
Try this nutritious and delicious smoothie to help give you that all day glow.
• 400 g total Granny Smith apples, cored and roughly chopped
The great thing about smoothies is that you can experiment with lots of different ingredients to help you get that nutritious boost in the morning or after a workout. It’s also a quick and easy way to get your 5-a-day without even trying.
• 70 g packed red leaf lettuce or romaine
This smoothie is jam-packed with nutritious ingredients like fresh turmeric, coriander, parsley, lemon, avocado, green apple, lettuce, coconut water and more. Don’t be put off by the coriander or parsley. They are very under-appreciated herbs for their nutritional value. Coriander is detoxifying and helps remove heavy metals from the body. It’s also antibacterial, immune-enhancing and aids digestion. Parsley is a diuretic aid rich in antioxidants. It contains vitamin K, which helps support healthy bones. Fresh Turmeric is also worth paying attention to. It’s an anti-inflammatory and fights free radical damage to the brain. It contains curcumin, which is a powerful antioxidant and also has pain-relieving properties. Remember to experiment! And it’s worth doing your own research into the wonderful health benefits and healing powerof plants ^

INGREDIENTS
QueenBee Spring 2018
• 18 g loosely packed fresh parsley leaves • 15 g packed fresh corriander leaves* • 70 g frozen mango chunks • 50 g packed avocado • 4 teaspoons fresh lemon juice, or to taste • 2 small, pinky-sized pieces (12 g total) peeled fresh turmeric** • 5 to 6 large ice cubes, or as needed DO IT This recipe is based on using a large blender so if your blender is on the small side, you may want to make a half-batch. Add the coconut water and mango juice into a high-speed blender. Now add the rest of the ingredients. Blend on high until super smooth. TIPS: * The coriander flavour in this smoothie is quite pronounced. If you’re not a coriander fan, feel free to swap it with more romaine or fresh mint (start with 10g of mint). ** Fresh turmeric root is becoming more and more common in supermarkets these days. It can also be found on Amazon, in select health food stores and Indian and Asian shops. Look for firm turmeric that is unblemished.

e all get a lift when the days start to get longer and the buds start to show. We also seem to get an energy boost, have more motivation and start to make plans about what we are going to tackle next, be it spring cleaning or a spot of DIY.
Are women different to men at this time of year? It seems we do sometimes go back to our ancestral behaviours with a modern twist. You’ll see a lot more middle-aged men out on their bikes now the weather is fair or maybe the golf course. Women tend to be far more practical; looking to improve their surroundings and looking further ahead, like getting jobs done that were put off during winter. Men seem still to avoid this and go off to play! Of course, this isn’t a hard and fast rule and we all do things differently but there is a truth in it. I find, come spring, that my clinic gets even busier as people decide this year
62
QueenBee Spring 2018
QueenBeeviewpoint they will sort their issues out so they can start living the life they really want. Women tend to recognise their need for support much more readily than men and this is based on our primitive survival instincts.
“Women are far more used to being part of a group that could offer support and safety” Women are far more used to being part of a group that could offer support and safety, their ability to interact and share enabled them to cope and be open to help when needed. Men, on the other hand, are great at co-operating to get a job done (like catch a wildebeest) but then would separate and operate as an individual, showing their strength as any sign of weakness would reduce their value and they would slip down the pecking order.
Women understand subconsciously that to create positive changes they need to re-ignite the tribe mentality, be supportive and ask for support. So, this spring, men need to unite and follow the example of so many female support groups and learn to talk about how they feel. We need to change the way we communicate with each other and start seeing value in sharing and owning our vulnerabilities and turning them into positive attributes. Women get it ‘more right’ than men; we all need to up the game of talking and being open about being ok with feeling insecure sometimes ^ > Gary Johannes 07780592625 gary@inspiredtochange.biz www.inspiredtochange.biz
Unfortunately, the same is still happening today, but men haven’t caught on that it’s now more detrimental to their needs and value.

Spring Cleaning
T
uesday March 20th is the first day of spring and for many of us this means time for a good spring clean.
Spring cleaning is about going beyond your usual dusting, mopping, vacuuming and scrubbing routine. And if you’ve never done it, how do you even know where to start? Like all big undertakings, it’s a good idea to make a plan. Yes, that means committing pen to paper. Or creating a spreadsheet, if that’s more your style. Start by listing out every room of your house, without forgetting places like the utility room, laundry room, garage and cupboards. Think about tasks like cleaning the skirting boards,
64
QueenBee Spring 2018
the internal walls, the windows as well as moving and cleaning behind and under furniture Basically, things that you probably don’t clean on a regular basis. If it helps you, walk through your house whilst making a list. You probably already have a good selection of cleaning products but at a minimum, you’ll need an all-purpose cleaner for everything from walls to floors and a glass cleaner for windows and mirrors. Don’t forget about specialized cleaners, like oven cleaner, silver polish or wood oil, because you probably don’t use those things nearly as much.
QueenBeecleaning
with the Queen of Clean Your tools are just as important, Inspect everything from brooms to mops, and replace them if they’re in bad shape. If you follow me across my social media, you will see me recommending great products that help save time and make cleaning a whole lot easier. Spring cleaning is also about decluttering. Before you can clean, you have to declutter and organise. There are lots of ways to go about it, but the easiest is to set up three different plastic tubs and label them keep, rubbish and donate/sell.
There aren’t any rules about when you have to finish. However, actually getting everything finished will become more difficult as time goes by. When the warmth of summer is beckoning to you from outside your window, do you really want to be knee-deep in cleaning and decluttering? My advice is to start early. When it’s too cold and dreary to go outside. Then you can get outside guilt-free in the spring. For more Cleaning Tips, Home Hacks and advice, head on over to my blog www.queenofclean.blog

QueenBee allotment by Lucy Grace
I
t was a magical moment last week when my daughter presented me with a tiny, closed daisy. “You know what that means…” I said, “SPRING is coming!” She danced around squealing in excitement - our favourite time of year! Every Spring we plant seeds, observing and celebrating their growth. Already we’ve got seeds germinating and baby plants keeping warm by our sliding doors to the garden. Truth is, although there are a lot of things to take into consideration when growing plants - and so much advice on what you should be doing - the best way to start is to work with what you’ve got and just give it a go! Many plants will grow as happily indoors as they would outside, so you don’t even need a garden. Making some space inside to get your plants started also means they become a part of the family for a while, when we can all learn about them, nurturing them as the living things they are and appreciating the healing nourishment they will bring.
66
QueenBee Spring 2018
We are pleasantly surprised with our abundant successes at the allotment over 2017, our first year of the project now with a bigger team, we are busy preparing beds and making more specific plans for this year. My grandparents have moved to the area and this means two things: We not only have more hands on deck at the plot, but with them comes a world of knowledge and experience. We are bound to have even more growing success this year – it will be humbling and satisfying to feed our four generations of family with the allotment produce, as well as friends and the QueenBee team of course! It costs next-to-nothing to take up a plot and it could be the most rewarding choice you make this year! ^ > Contact the council for info on allotments near you. A sting in the tail by Tracy Hefferon
I
try to keep things light hearted in my column. But this issue it’s a bit different. I am going to do a spot of nagging. Not that I do a lot of that of course. In fact it’s almost totally alien to me… I went back to work after the half term break and could feel the sombre mood before I even got to my classroom. I was duly informed that not one, but three, members of staff had received bad news during the holiday. Two colleagues’ husbands were diagnosed with terminal cancer and another colleague was due to have an operation that week to remove a mass from her uterus. Hearing just one of these stories would have been bad enough. But three? We were broken. What upset us most was one of the husband’s had been a husband for just four months and is only twentyeight-years-old…
We discovered he’d found a lump on his arm eighteen months ago but dismissed it as ‘just a lump’. By the time he started to feel very unwell, the cancer had spread to other parts of his body and he was told the news that nobody wants to hear. All of us know people who are worried or concerned about something but have yet to book that vital appointment to get it checked out. We may even be that person ourselves. Being a complete hypochondriac myself, I’m straight down the doctor’s if I get so much as a pimple… Okay, slight exaggeration, but many of us aren’t like me. We put up and shut up. But that needs to stop. So many cancers can be treated and are treatable. Cancer is not the death sentence many of us think it is. We need to make sure we know our bodies and act upon anything that isn’t normal for us. Early diagnosis is key. So if there’s a lump, a bump, a niggle or a hunch, get it checked out. Please. It could save your life. And your loved ones a lifetime of heartbreak ^
