‘FAB’ FABY NAILS! By Lucy Dean

efore now, I had never heard of Faby at all. Being a lover of all things beauty related, I just had to try them out. I had three colours – white (Teint de Neige), yellow (Marry Me Robbie!!) and this khaki green (Ginevra’s Halo). Upon applying the first coat, I was a bit iffy about the patchiness. However, like all nail varnishes, you do need at least two coats. The second coat worked wonders and it was super pigmented – you absolutely don’t need anymore. The staying power of the polishes is also pretty remarkable – they lasted for about three and a half days before they started to chip away (better than most brands)!

New beauty and wellness sanctuary to open

ETERBOROUGH will have a new beauty and wellness day spa by the end of March, when Alwalton Hall opens its’ doors to customers

The former home of Perkins Engines founder, Frank Perkins, has been undergoing a transformation into a beauty and wellness sanctuary. A team of craftsmen, tradesmen and decorators have been carefully preparing the interior and grounds of the Grade II listed building. In addition to the beautiful relaxation areas and Regency lounges, clients will enjoy five specially themed treatment rooms, plus a former three-room guest suite, which has been adapted for the ultimate in pampering. The Georgian country house in picturesque Alwalton village, is set in five acres of landscaped grounds. It offers a range of beauty and wellness treatments including facials, waxing, pedicures, manicures, massage and specialist skincare including the latest CACI non-surgical anti-ageing treatments. There is a 15m outdoor heated swimming pool and spa pool with dedicated changing rooms and sun terrace for clients on half and full day packages for much of the year.

TWO AND A HALF STONE LIGHTER

...and no longer the couch potato!

ho would have thought that Pokémon Go, a FitBit and a two-and-a-half stone weight loss would lead to walking 100k for Muscular Dystrophy UK? Trudi Maples, whose nephew has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, has pledged to raise money for the charity along with a colleague by walking from London to Brighton at the end of May. 62 miles over just two days! Struggling all of her adult life with her weight, Trudi had always looked for the ‘quick fix’ when it came to dieting. She would lose weight and then, when she went back to eating normally, the weight would creep back on again. Atkins, Slimfast, Juice Plus, Cambridge Diet... she had tried them all. Some with more success than others. Then it just clicked. It was all about calories in versus calories out. She used the online food diary and healthy eating resources that www.weightlossresources.co.uk had to offer making it easy to count the calories. Then she discovered Pokémon Go and started walking more. She would go hunting for Pokémon each evening with

her husband Paul and dog Dave each at the rowing lake. Logging all the walking she was doing in the Weight Loss Resources exercise diary and earning extra calories for the odd treat (she is very partial to a nice skinny latte!) Her sister loaned her a FitBit and encouraged her to join the Parkrun at Ferry Meadows. She hasn’t looked back since. Well, maybe to see how far she has come! Two and a half stone lighter and no longer the couch potato she was six months ago, she has decided to take on the challenge of a lifetime by walking from London to Brighton with Action Challenge and raise money for Muscular Dystrophy UK. Training for the event has just started and Trudi walks at least an hour most days with her training partner, Dave the dog. Her weekends will be taken up with the Parkrun and increasingly longer walks til she manages to get up to 28 miles in one day just before the event at the end of May. If you find yourself too busy with everyday tasks and less time to try new things, it may not be entirely your fault. A new study revealed that the average British person hasn’t tried a new active hobby in over five years.

lthough most adults said they felt excited, proud and more confident when they tried a new activity, the frequency of with which we try something new decreases as we get older. Lack of fitness and low confidence are often some of the common barriers to trying something new, according to research commissioned by Neilson. On average, adults in their 50s and 60s only try a new activity every nine years, despite the positive feelings we get from them. That doesn’t leave a lot of room for reinvention, with the average life expectancy across the UK being eighty-one years. However, for those who have found their ultimate hobby, there may be a business prospect in store. Research from Crunch Accounting revealed that UK employees plan to turn their hobbies into careers in 2017. The source reveals that Britain is a nation of secret entrepreneurs with one in three people enjoying a hobby they believe could one day become their profession. Almost half, of one in ten that consider

starting a business this year, said they would be prepared to see a drop in salary if it allowed them to pursue a dream job that incorporates their hobby. Picking up a new activity is just as important for our well-being as going back to a hobby that we used to enjoy, or developing skills within an existing one, as it can have equally beneficial effects. Feelings of excitement, being proud and more confident is what adults said they felt when they re-engaged or learnt a new skill within an existing hobby. Yet, almost two thirds of grown-ups have given up the activities they enjoyed as children – and those who have kept them up only develop a new skill every one-and-a-half years. This calls for an opportunity to reminiscence over what you used to love as a child! Even if you’re not thinking of your hobby as a business opportunity, it can still benefit you professionally. There are some hobbies that look great on a CV. Companies appreciate it if you include your hobby if it’s related to the job you’re pursuing.

The activities you participate in can show personality, experience and uniqueness. And if there’s a chance your hobby makes you stand out as the more attractive candidate, you’d be wise to include it. Sitting on the sofa binge-watching box sets on Netflix at evenings and weekends doesn’t exactly show great qualities of motivation. The most successful people know there is more to life than simply eating, sleeping, and working. However, finding that balance is not easy. I’m sure, there is someone you admire who seem to have successfully balanced work, family and friends. Chances are, it took them an awful long time to progress that lifebalancing, universal challenge, like it is for most adults, or they’re still struggling. However, if you’re truly passionate about a hobby or an activity, you can find the time and energy for it or find one. Everyone needs to enjoy some downtime every now and then, and making the most of your free time by taking up a hobby can even help make you more successful. Playing a musical instrument, for example, can stimulate your creativity, analytical skills, and fine motor skills. Think about where your time and money is going and what the point of a new hobby is? A good direction to find a new activity is to say “yes” to every opportunity, get out of your comfort zone, look for inspiration and most importantly, be persistent in whatever you peruse.

The social craft group provides workshops for people in the city who like making any craft from cross-stitch, knitting and crochet to jewellery making. For a more active hobby, outside the city is the Peterborough Sailing Club, suitable for anyone who would like to be a sailor and learn more about it. There are also countless walking clubs in and around the city. The Ramblers are just one of many that offers a programme of walks throughout the year. Starting a new hobby and exploring a different area of activity can be daunting, one website we found helpful is www.discoverahobby.com. You can also go to your local visitor’s information centre to see if you haven’t missed anything you can do in the city. Enquiring or starting your own community surrounding the interest you share with others is also a possibility you could consider. Don’t forget to check out our leisure section in the back of the magazine, for events and activities you can enjoy, when going out or staying in. There are endless possibilities to try and find a hobby that you love - just go for it! ^

hilst searching for a handbag within the darkest depths of my wardrobe, I came across an old suitcase I have that contains hundreds of photographs, some of which span over four generations. I gave up on my quest to find the bag and took the case down from the shelf. I made myself a cuppa and with this magical mix of images steeped in history, I spent the next two hours on a nostalgic trip down memory lane.

Zoom forward twenty years or so and the scene is much different. We’re now in the 80’s. The decade of huge shoulder pads, yuppies and Duran Duran. I sit there in fits of hysterics and can’t believe I could ever have worn my hair that big! There are wedding photos, baby pictures, holiday snaps and life was good.

However many women can feel indulgent or guilty at the idea of hiring a stylist to give them a helping had with their personal style and wardrobe. STYLEPEG is a personal styling company for the busy modern woman to who wants to create and maintain her perfect wardrobe. Here, QueenBee talks to Alex Agboke about her local business. > Why did you start STYLEPEG and what service does it offer? I started STYLEPEG because I wanted to create a styling platform for the everyday woman. It was time to take “personal styling” off the elite shelf and make it accessible and affordable for the women that I was meeting in MY life - a life far removed from the magazine pages of socialite events, expensive boutiques and fashion catwalks. I have 4 children between the ages of 4 and 11, a husband and an elderly mother’n’ law who lives with us. Life is busy and varied; I meet women everywhere from the school run to business networks and even department store changing rooms... and I find we all share a common dream - we want a wardrobe that makes us look and feel our best. It takes time to understand your personal colour palette, put outfits together and shop more confidently, especially online. With the continued expertise and support of a stylist, a woman can achieve the simple, versatile wardrobe she has always dreamed of. Think of it as a health plan but for personal style. We start with a Personal Colour Analysis (PCA) 1. Women can wear any colour but it just depends on the shade. Colour really is our ultimate beauty product and the foundation of every wardrobe. Wearing the right colours will make your skin appear smoother, clearer and more radiant; eyes will sparkle and you can even appear slimmer. Wearing the wrong colours can reveal every flaw in your complexion, making it look drained, tired and lacking vitality. Putting outfits together is a real sticking point for many women, but when our clothes all harmonise within one colour palette it makes it so much easier to mix and match them into multiple looks. 2. The next step is to look at body shape. We look at each women’s body measurements using a really cool system based around the divine proportion principle. It show’s women their perfect neck, sleeve, shirt and coat length and it even works for accessories.

The Capsule Wardrobe: this is the fun part… because shopping smart is the key and it stops us buying what we don’t need, saving us precious time and money. We look at a woman’s lifestyle, preferences and personality. We can then show each client how to create a capsule collection at the beginning of each new season so her wardrobe is never cluttered, but rather stocked with everything she needs to dress appropriately and impeccably every day. > Whom is it for? Any women who wants to look and feel her best. There is no shame in asking for a little expert help to get your wardrobe organised so you can focus on more important priorities. After all, life is more than what we wear! We assume women know how to dress but for many its not something that comes naturally and/or isn’t something they enjoy. Gaining some knowledge around personal style is no different to asking a nutritionist for information about your diet or a hairdresser about which type of highlights you should have. > Who is Alexandra and how is she like her customer? Being an actress I used to dress creatively and with confidence. However, when I started having children everything changed. My body was completely different, my lifestyle had changed dramatically and I just didn’t know how to make my wardrobe function the way it needed to. Style magazines and websites would overwhelm me and I just wanted someone to help me dress ME so I could stop wasting time and money on clothes that didn’t suit me.

> Who is your typical customer? It varies, but I’ve worked most recently with professional women, mum’s going back to work or female entrepreneurs building up their own businesses. With the rise in social media and video marketing its important to know how to dress for the camera, using clean lines and colours which look good on screen. I may also work with women who just want to maximise their style potential and streamline their wardrobes so looking and feeling great is effortless. I recently worked with a small business owner called Katie in her late forties - she only ever wore black. She felt safe and slimmer. But she also has a vivacious personality and a commanding energy. The black was hiding it and making her appearance forgettable. After her PCA we found she looked radiant in deep, cool winter colours which enhanced her image as an elegant, commanding professional.

When you look the part, you’re halfway there to feeling the part

pring is upon us; we’ve left the festive season behind and New Year’s resolutions have already gone down the drain. The vicious cycle of eating badly and feeling even worse has begun. In Britain, the wet and cold weather isn’t particularly motivating and the lack of sunshine doesn’t help either. But a new study suggests good posture puts you in a better frame of mind. When you look the part, you’re halfway there to feeling the part. Sitting up straight has a direct impact on your mood and can make you feel less fearful, more confident and enthusiastic, according to a New Zealand study. This also applies to your attitude and the way you approach situations. Focus on what you do have and not on what you don’t. Recent research indicates that optimism is linked to a reduced risk of developing mental or physical health issues, as well as an increased chance of a longer life. A radiant smile works wonders. The American Associated Press poll revealed that 55% of those surveyed, said they expect their own lives to improve in 2017. Let’s jump on the ‘glass half-full’ bandwagon and embrace optimism. Data was analysed from over 70,000 women in the Nurses’ Health Study, and found that women who were optimistic had a significantly reduced risk of dying from several major causes over an eight-year period, compared with women who were less optimistic. Shocking, right? You don’t need to be told that keeping hydrated, sleeping eight hours a day, exercising regularly and eating well, will benefit you. However, you should bear in mind that what you put in to your system affects your whole body and all the above factors. Facts are that looking after your body from the inside out will benefit you in countless ways from functionality to appearances. We all want greater skin and a calmer mind. So back away from the vending machine and stop trying to find excuses. We all fall off the rails; it makes us human. But the first step is acceptance and then you can begin to plan changes. As clichéd as it sounds, those who fail to plan, plan to fail. Make a start, break the cycle and create a happier, restored you ^

ecently I surveyed local people in my community on how often they change they bedding. 80% of the people I surveyed said they only change their bedding once a month. Someone admitted that they hadn’t changed their sheets in six months and others once a week or once every two weeks. I then ran a similar survey with the people that follow me on my social media and was pleased to see that many people, like me, change their bedding on average once or twice a week. When people are suffering with a cold or a bug they change the sheets more often, as I do.

My Method: Hoover the mattress. Then very lightly steam and finally spray with a Dettol spray. Leave the mattress to dry and air before putting on freshly ironed sheets. We are not alone in our beds! Dirt and dust can quickly build up in our beds and unfortunately we’re not alone in them... they are full of dust mites. But dust mites aren’t the only hidden surprises lurking in our sheets. Every night we shed a million skin cells, accompanied by oil and sweat. If you don’t wash your bedding regularly, this adds to your bed’s attraction for mites and their breeding. Disgusting! Though bedbugs and mites aren’t known to transmit disease or pose any serious medical risk, the stubborn parasites can leave itchy and unsightly bites. However, bedbugs don’t always leave marks. The best way to tell if you have a bedbug infestation is to see the live, apple-seed-size critters for yourself. Unfortunately, once bedbugs take up residence in your bed they can be difficult 44

to exterminate without professional help. Keep bed bugs and mites away and make changing your sheets a regular part of your cleaning routine. Until next time! aving a color consultation has always been on my wish list. As a girly-girl, I love make up, fashion and am a total beauty and product junkie! I have read so many articles on color analysis in the women’s glossies – wearing the right colors will light up your face and make you look gorgeously vibrant and healthy. So I decided to go for it and arranged a day for Alex , owner of Stylepeg to come and sort out my colours! Before Alex arrived, she messaged strict instructions that I had to have a completely bare face and a room with loads of natural light. At forty-eight, I don’t like many people seeing me in such stark conditions! Alex arrived armed with mirrors, palettes, fabrics and many color swatches.Hair scraped back with an alice band, we began my consultation. This is very in-depth and can last three hours. We covered everything from lifestyle, hobbies – she even went through the interior design of my house – which all helped her create the right tones, colors and moods for me. I was amazed at how some of the colors she used against me immediately drained my face. And others gave my complexion an instant lift and even made my eyes brighter.

Lakeside is the Perfect Venue for Events

The venue has installed new ceiling panels to give a refined sound no matter how noisy a party gets. Peterborough artist Lee Mason was commissioned to redecorate the interior of the restaurant and his great work has created a modern, welcoming setting. Another addition at Lakeside is a new log burner. This feature ensures that there is always a cosy corner to enjoy at Lakeside and has proven very popular with guests at events. The updates at the Ferry Meadows based restaurant continue outside. A newly built conservatory adds extra shelter for guests, ideal for taking in spectacular countryside views without having to face the cold. The conservatory has been a big hit with winter dog walkers in particular, who, along with

their furry friends, now have somewhere to shelter from inclement weather. Across the park, sister venue Ferry Meadows CafĂŠ has had a similar update. An outdoor seating area has recently been equipped with a new cover to give customers and their pets a bit of protection from the elements. issed the hype of ‘VEGAN-UARY’ for the month of January? It’s never too late to join the wave of the plant-based diet - VEGANISM!

In January 2017 ‘Veganuary’ saw its largest ever movement of the UK masses going vegan for a month! But the good news doesn’t stop there as more people are making these changes long term too. Eliminating animals and animal bi-products from our diet lifestyles isn’t just a seasonal trend, the number of vegans in Britain alone has risen by a whopping 360% in the last 10 years. It’s the largest ever decade for veganism, and with the worlds current planetary, environment, animal and health situations, this plant-based lifestyle is only going to grow. 60

Whether people are reactively changing through health scares or just wanting to try something new, the huge array of health benefits are being seen on mass (lower cholesterol levels, lower blood pressure, lower rates of Type 2 diabetes, lower body mass indexes, a lower risk of death from heart disease, lower acidifying food intake and lower overall cancer rates). These huge benefits are inspiring many others and so continues this cultural shift. Some are seeing how animal agriculture is destroying the planet (being responsible for over 18% of greenhouse gas emissions, even beating world transport (13%)). And with the current global water and food shortages, using 2500 gallons of water to produce one pound of beef is just one of many facts creating paradigm shifts in some hearts and minds. The majority of people are realising how their purchases are contributing to animal cruelty, and their genuine love for animals is the catalyst. They want to feel better about themselves and the impact they make on their world and this includes not supporting factory farming, cramped conditions or animals being killed or exploited in a any way. There are many health, environmental and animal welfare reasons for making the switch, and more people are realising that the reasons for going more plant-based far outweigh the unnecessary food habits we have been brought up with.

“I was challenged to join Veganuary! So being of a somewhat competitive nature, I jumped at the challenge! One hour later, I’m sat there thinking that this could be a tough one. As I travel the world on business and not all countries embrace veganism, plus the added challenge of having diabetes, all I kept thinking was“Have I made a mistake?” Well, four weeks in, I can say that I am finding the whole thing super easy and I’m pleasantly surprised by the results too!

If you missed Veganuary, you don’t have to wait until January 2018 to join the revolution! It’s never too late to create positive change in your life. Positive change is positive change, no matter how small the steps are.

When communicating my new food choices, not only do hotels and restaurants cater for you, in the world of good customer services - many embrace it. Airports even have choices that can work for me. Tonight I attended a business dinner and the chef, on hearing I was vegan, came out to see what he could create for me. My fellow diners were stunned by the service and the freshly cooked meal that was presented to me. Most were also jealous that my dinner looked better than theirs!

So, any results to report? “Personally I feel less bloated, less tired and much more energetic. And guess what? I’m losing weight at the same time! After only four weeks, I am over 6 pounds lighter! Its nice to know I’m not supporting any form of animal cruelty with my food choices too, so I am definitely going to continue after Veganuary!” ^

Seeing the pain my husband was experiencing only made it that much harder. It was the first tragedy we had faced in the 10 years we have been together. We hadn’t even announced I was pregnant to the families yet - we’d wanted to wait until the ‘safe’ 3 month period - so telling them that I’d been pregnant, but wasn’t any more, was very difficult. Somehow, I felt ashamed, as if I’d done something wrong. What really helped me get through this time, was talking to my friends and family. My mum, and many of my friends have gone through similar experiences so could sympathise with what I was going through. If you know someone who is experiencing miscarriage, the kindest thing that you can do - and I say this from personal experience - is to treat your friend’s miscarriage the same way you would any other bereavement. Acknowledge it directly and compassionately. Send flowers, comfort food, or a card, or tell her in person, “I’m really sorry for your loss, and I’m here to listen if you ever need someone to talk to.” It might feel

Guilty conscience - a man’s view

had an interesting conversation last week. It was about how women who have a family and a career suffer with anxiety and depression more than men. I’d love to say that isn’t the case, but I see far more women for this issue than men. Why? There are many factors; we could take it down to simple physiology and dissect the chemical differences between men and women that create a different outcome when pressure is applied. However, I also see a simple and consistent thread that runs through almost every case. In our opportunity-rich world, women have internalized this to mean ‘I must be brilliant at everything, regardless of how much that is’. Every role must be perfect – career, mother, friend, partner, homemaker, peacemaker, chef… the list goes on. There is no such thing as ‘good enough’. And when the façade starts to slip, along comes guilt! If, to do a great job, a man sacrifices a part of his family or social life, he may feel he is missing out but he rationalizes it as ‘just what has to be done’. Women on the other hand, often feel they are failing those who

they love and themselves which mistakenly leads to guilt. It is hard to stay rational when we feel we are spinning many plates because, when we get into overwhelm, the mind only has three choices - anxiety, depression or anger or an unhelpful mix of them all! There is a solution, and it works without having to give up everything or choose one over the other. You have to move from overwhelm to control. Easy he says! No, but it is simple, and simple is good! First - focus on the stuff you DO do well. Write those successes down. Every day. It takes just one minute before bed. S WELL AS WRITE and edit, I also teach Food Technology to primary age children once a week. Last half term, we focused on healthy eating and where food comes from as well as looking at ‘five-a-day’ and what that means. We talked about eating five portions of fruit and vegetables a day and how big a portion was (approximately the size of your palm, apparently). The children talked about how much fruit and vegetables they ate each day and it is fair to say, if you’re only a breakfast, lunch and dinner person, squeezing in five portions a day can be a tall order. Especially if like some, it’s Cheerios for breakfast, a sandwich, packet of crisps and an apple for lunch and pizza for tea. We discussed how we could sneak portions of fruit and veg into our daily diet by snacking on a handful of raisins or knocking back a super-quick smoothie or glass of juice. Everyone agreed how easy it was to reach that magical five-a-day goal if we tried.

And they promised they would try. Mission accomplished! Fast forward to today and I’m browsing through the BBC news app on my phone, and see a newly posted report that makes my blood run cold. Given that in November last year, Dr. Helen Stokes-Lampard (the new head of GP’s) warned that the five-a-day target was unrealistic and it should be slashed to just two… we have now been told to DOUBLE our intake to TEN portions a day! In a society that is seemingly getting poorer by the minute and budget supermarkets such as Aldi seeing their customer numbers rise and overtake the likes of Tesco, expecting Joe Average and his family to consume ten portions of fruit and vegetables a day is like persuading Donald Trump to get a short back and sides. In a family of four, that means 280 portions a week. And of course, as we all know, the humble spud doesn’t count. (But baked beans do…) The volume is huge with the cost being even more so. Why can’t the experts decide on a more realistic approach to cut colossal health bills? Like maybe health and nutrition lessons as part of the National Curriculum? Surely if we teach our children the basics of healthy living from the start, they will grow up healthier? Or is that too much like common sense? ^
