5 tools
every DIY woman should own
Whether you’re a beginner to DIY projects or the advanced handyman in the household, here are five basic, yet essential tools every woman should own someday. A LEVEL; put an end to eyeballing when installing shelving or pictures in your home that turn out wonky. It’s a great tool and helps you ensures to get the DIY job done straight away. A TAPE MEASURE; always comes in handy for various projects. Whether it’s measuring dimensions for cutting materials such as wood, the space to hang up your projects or placing built pieces of furniture in a room. A metal 25ft tape measure should cover it to start with. A HAMMER; although simple enough, it is definitely a versatile tool. It can be used for hanging up pictures, putting together furniture or small wood working projects. It also has a straight claw that you can use to pull out nails. PLIERS; there is no wonder dentists use them, they’re good for gripping. Certain pliers cut and twist wires, others are excellent for gripping nuts and bolts. Whatever the job, it’s not advisable to DIY your own dentistry needs. A TOOLBOX; foremost important for keeping all your essential tools stored together. So you always know where your tools are when a DIY job calls! Although these are all basic tools, you don’t often think they’re needed until you’ve started the job! Happy DIY-ing ladies ^ 4

I think that you can do so much for yourself instead of taking tablets. A simple massage can make you feel so much better. For me it’s finding what works. My passion is the skin and body treatments. Healthy bowels By Sarah Lockyer
N
utritional Therapists always enquire about your bowel movement; it’s frequency, ease in passing, colour and even texture! Many of my clients aren’t sure if their stool is ‘healthy’ so we discuss these factors and refer to a chart with pictures. The bowels are eliminatory organs, removing toxins and waste from the body. Therefore, if they aren’t functioning efficiently, other eliminatory organs must work harder and the body can suffer as a consequence; think spotty skin, fatigue and even smelly breath. These symptoms can occur when toxins remain in the body longer than they should. Here are some tips for bowel health: Eat fibrous foods – a mixture of both soluble and insoluble fibre such as porridge, wholegrains, cooked vegetables (root vegetables in particular), fruit, beans, pulses, nuts and seeds. Drink enough hydrating fluid. This is particularly important if you are increasing fibre suddenly. Fluids will assist in moving fibre and nutrients along the digestive tract. Drink apple or prune juice if you get constipated.

Take flax. You can add it to soups, yogurts or smoothies. Probiotics can be helpful if you experience constipation, diarrhoea (or a combination of the two), wind and bloating. These symptoms can be indications that your good gut bacteria is out of balance. Probiotics support growth and proliferation of ‘friendly’ flora, helping process toxins efficiently once again. Aloe vera juice has a nourishing effect on the gut, supporting the production of digestive enzymes and health of beneficial bacteria, so food is broken down better and nutrients absorbed easier. Regular exercise can help keep bowel movements regular. Lower your stress levels. Indeed, nothing affects the bowels like stress! If you think stress is a problem for you, address this alongside bowel health. Recent Studies have revealed that the holiday seasons are destined to be diet disasters, Vanessa Rosales reports on tackling the festive feast.
C
hristmas is a time of dinner parties, chocolate Santas and brandy cream pouring. Going for seconds is just as easy as pilling on the pounds. Studies have found that Autumn is the best season to begin dieting. According to a new study from Cornell University, right now is the least you’ll weigh all year. The report in the New England Journal of Medicine reveals that weight gain happens in holiday seasons universally. Researchers weighed 3,000 people in the U.S., Germany, and Japan over a 12-month period and found that this time of the year the average person is at their lowest weight. With the festive season fast approaching, we can wave that hard earned for ‘beach body’ goodbye. According to the findings, at first American scales go up by 0.2 percent during Thanksgiving and have a 0.4 percent hike at Christmas. And research from the Food and Brand Lab shows that it can take months to lose extra holiday weight that is put on over the festive season. Although 0.6 weight increase may not sound like a lot of weight, the study found that people didn’t lose the extra pounds until May.
However, feeling deprived and going on a ‘diet’ isn’t the answer, as is likely to cause stress and that can jeopardise it all, according to a new Molecular Psychiatry study. The study, published last month, determined that stress overrides the benefits of healthier food choices. In other words, if you’re stressed, your body responds to food the same, whether it’s good or bad. So what should I do? You may ask! Take what nutritionists have said with a pinch of salt and balance your food intake and ‘chill out’. The health and fitness industry can be pressurising and it’s no reason to spoil your Christmas. The Holidays only pose a threat to the waistline if you don’t eat in moderation. Try snacking sensibly, limiting your alcohol intake and healthy alternatives. There is a lot of health and nutrition advise out there alongside, sites such as NHS and BBC Good Food that can offer more indepth advice on how to have a healthy Christmas. The orchestra has developed a diverse repertoire and a reputation for a high standard of performance from its’ players, who often number 50. They are all amateurs and pay a subscription to play three concerts a year. The exceptions are the conductor Steve Bingham, the leader of the strings Liz Taylor and a variety of soloists. Liz is now a full-time teacher of violin and viola with The Stamford Endowed School, where she has taught since finishing her music studies. The orchestra is a Registered Charity. A fire at the Broadway Theatre in Peterborough took the venue away from the CPSO, but they found a new one in The Voyager Concert Hall in Walton, Peterborough, which has been their home for the past six years. The acoustics are terrific and the tiered seating presents a great view, with the orchestra playing on the floor of the concert hall. The orchestra is supported by The Friends of the CPSO, of which I am
secretary and my husband Clive is chairman. The Friends committee meets every other month and provide front of duties on concert days. We keep in touch with members via eight newsletters a year and the orchestra lays on music exclusively for Friends’ members every December. Membership of The Friends - currently 112 - is £10 a year. Concerts planned for 2017 are: Sunday, March 5, at 3pm, followed by the Summer concert on Saturday, June 17, at 7.30pm and an Autumn concert in October ^ Visit: www.cpso.org.uk

o Angelina Jolie has filed for divorce from Brad Pitt and it is reported that she has reached the end of her tether with Brad’s abusive behaviour and his marijuana and alcohol excesses. Brad’s alleged behaviour can be used in establishing the cause of the breakdown of the marriage if Angelina cites allegations of unreasonable behaviour against Brad. It is also reported that there may be a disagreement as to who the couple’s six children live with and that Angelina is set on taking the matter to Court. Brad’s use of Marijuana can be used as an important factor in the decision making by the court if the substance abuse takes place in front of the children. This also applies to any abusive
behaviour irrespective of whether it is caused by drugs or alcohol. If the Court finds in Angelina’s favour it may also impact on the time that Brad spends with his children. Sorting out a financial settlement may also get messy if there are no pre or post nuptial agreements in place, if tensions remain high between this couple, even if their net worth is millions of dollars and ownership of several properties. With the assistance of their Lawyers it is hoped that Angelina and Brad will adopt a conciliatory approach to resolving the issues concerning the children and a financial settlement which has to be in everyone’s best interests. LEANNE TYERS – Cornerback “If you’d have told me six months ago that I would be playing American football for Peterborough’s first ever women’s team, I would have called you crazy, yet here I am, having attended six training sessions and competed in our first two tournament days! I’ve been watching the NFL for six years now and my boyfriend plays for a local men’s American football team, so the game isn’t brand new to me, but actually playing any kind of sport definitely is. 48

They only launched in July, but already Peterborough Royals, the city’s first American Football team for women, are travelling the UK taking on the best teams in the country. QueenBee hears from two pioneering women who’ve taken up this extraordinary sport.
I first heard about the Peterborough Royals on Facebook in August and wanted to help in any way that I could. I knew I had to be involved in some way to help them make history as the first women’s team in Peterborough – what an awesome venture. I signed up as team secretary and was soon persuaded to actually train and play during the first training sessions in September. Having missed the club’s first taster session, I was worried that everyone would already know so much more than me, know each
QueenBeesport other and then there’d be me... rubbish and alone! Luckily for me, this was not the case. The team members had a range of knowledge and abilities, were coached by renowned former players who have played and coached in the UK and the USA, and were all very welcoming despite their serious game faces on the pitch! There’s always room for more players on our roster so I’d recommend getting out of bed on a Saturday morning and joining the Peterborough Royals on the football field at Stanground Academy.” HEATHER WHINCUP – Linebacker “I heard about the Royals through Twitter. I saw something on my news feed and decided to follow them for more information. After a few emails back and forth, I thought it would be interesting to learn how to play American Football and decided to attend a training session. I packed a bag with boots, mouth guard and water bottle and set off. Walking up to a group of people I’ve never met before has never been top of my list of things to do, but as soon as I changed into my boots, we were making jokes and I could feel my nerves settling. During the first training session we covered basics like positions, and what each player does on the field. We even learned a few set ‘plays’ and by the end of the session, I knew what position I would play and had an idea of what I was doing… not bad for a first go! A fortnight later and we all met bright and early, piled into cars and set off to play the clubs first ever games at a tournament in

Northampton. We were one of six teams playing that day and as we watched the others go first, we all had lots of questions. Why’s she standing like Heather Whincup that? Why did they run ready for action that way? How are they twisting so much? It was a great opportunity for us all to learn more about the game, but then I realised we actually had to play! It was extremely nerve-racking playing against a well-established club but we held our own and after sliding over the astroturf a few times, we didn’t do too badly! I would recommend anyone to come to Peterborough Royals and give it ago as you don’t have to know a thing about American Football to play. ave you ever been hurt by someone, misjudged a person, ate that extra slice of cake or bought those shoes that you really couldn’t afford? Yeah, me too! I’ve done some really dumb ass things in my time, made some bad choices and been an even worse judge of character. From my own personal experience though, it’s the aftermath of such stupidity that causes the most grief.

Well... I have a theory about those untamed, devil may care moments. What truly makes this such a strange phenomenon is the fact that I never listen to the one true voice of reason that sits quietly somewhere in my head. She’s always there. She’s the one that keeps me awake at night, makes me question my actions. Yet I choose Even at this to ignore her every damn point, there’s no time. She is my “intuition” of course and it’s within every logic, and my resolve is nowhere woman’s power to unleash and use.
Like the arguments I have with myself, when that little voice inside my head has kept me awake all night and although I’ve tried denial, it doesn’t work. Justification to be seen. She’s our gut instinct, an for my actions is equally almost psychic ability, the as lame. And there’s no secret weapon. But instead of taking heed point in trying to vindicate myself either of our own built in emotional protection because the inner monologue is now device, we choose to ignore her and press getting fraught with tension and I know the self destruct button instead . What’s she’s about to blow at any moment. Even worse, we keep doing it ! It’s a common at this point, there’s no logic, and my occurrence for me, so personally I await resolve is nowhere to be seen. I know the the day when I can accept that those difference between right and wrong, but initial moments of doubt are plausible and that knowledge gives me little guidance that my first instincts are to be trusted... either. So I choose to ignore what I know to be unacceptable and behave recklessly but until then... get behind me Satan, anyway! It’s self sabotage, but what you’re doing me no favours! ^ 50

s there a difference between how men and women deal with Christmas? We’ve all heard the joke about men going shopping on Christmas Eve? Well before my wife re-educated me, that’s exactly when I used to do mine! Don’t get me wrong, I realise there is too much to do in the run up to Christmas to leave it all to the last minute, but is there a balance to be found by taking a leaf out of the ‘Man’s Book’? Do we need to focus on what’s really important and cut out the needless pressure?
> FOOD Christmas dinner is just a fancy roast dinner. No-one needs four meats and seven vegetables. And who finishes it all anyway? A standard roast should do it. > PRESENTS Cut the list down to immediate family and special friends. Nobody will remember the bath bomb you bought them so why waste time and effort buying it, wrapping it and sending it? >

Bond Girls go to the Ball! Celebrating 25 years of Sue Ryder at Thorpe Hall

IVE volunteers rose to the challenge by calling themselves The Bond Girls, inspired by the James Bond-theme of their charity fundraising Ball.
Realising they had a lot to live up to, they harnessed all the qualities of their movie namesakes to create a night of ‘sophistication and celebration’ to mark 25 years of Sue Ryder at Thorpe Hall in Peterborough. Resourceful, calm under pressure (most of the time!), quick-witted, perceptive, persuasive and with strong organisational skills and attention to detail, their aim was to make this anniversary year one to remember. Working together for the first time, the group shared their experience, knowledge, personal and professional contacts to turn their vision into reality. With clever use of lighting, the Grade I listed mansion house and gardens became a glittering setting worthy of a Hollywood film as guests arrived dressed to thrill and ready to party!

ake sure you keep your home clean and germ-free over the winter months and follow these easy steps to keep those bugs at bay. Clean and Sort out the Food Cupboards It’s time to sort through your food cupboards. Throw away whatever has gone off or won’t be used. Pay attention to ‘use by’ dates. If the date hasn’t passed but is coming up and you’re not going to use the item, throw it away. You should also throw away any cans that are dented or missing labels.

Clean your Computer If you don’t know anything about computers, don’t touch anything inside and risk damaging the computer. Power down, unplug, and start with the dirtiest parts – your keyboard and mouse. Turn your keyboard upside down and dump out any crumbs or dirt particles. Then use compressed air to get between the keys. Follow by wiping your keyboard and mouse with a damp cloth. There are also special electronic cleaners you can purchase but they’re not really necessary. Clean and Flip your Mattresses Twice a year (summer and winter), you should clean all of the mattresses in the house to keep dust mites under control. Vacuum the top of the mattress, move the mattress and vacuum the box springs, then flip it over and vacuum the new top of the mattress.

y hair is dry, stubborn and hard to manage. Humidity and damp weather is the bane of my life. I was told about smoothing treatments, to help tame frizzy hair, so I popped down to House of Hair, in Stanground, to give one a try.
It was my first time at House of Hair and I loved it. It’s clean and welcoming and all the girls there are lovely. Catherine was kind enough to do the treatment for me and she did a great job! They use the L’Kerabelle K Fusion anti-frizz smoothing treatment, which makes both straight and curly hair smoother and more manageable.

LOVE THIS TIME OF YEAR. Ordering my cockerel, decorating the tree, making a Christmas cake that nobody ever eats. Stocking up on Baileys, hiding presents all over the house (and finding one in June), and feeling the glow from endless goblets of mulled wine. I do, however hate the cold, mass-panic buying (what is it with bread?), the pressure of perfection and surprises. I absolutely HATE surprises. Having suffered too many times at the hands of an unexpected and unconventional gift, the fact that one might be looming terrifies me. One of the worst surprises I ever got was an evening gown. A floor-grazing number with a halter-neck. (I can’t even wear a halterneck for a start. My boobs are way too big to go Charlie Dimmock.) What on earth am I supposed to do with a full-length evening gown in a fetching black and white zebra print? And why
the hell did the donator of said gift think I would even WANT a full-length evening gown in a fetching black and white zebra anyway? But worse… much, much worse, was the time I was given a return airline ticket to Barcelona. Hotel included. For a wonderful, cultural, four-day trip. On. My. Own. As I sat staring at the plethora of Spanish paraphernalia that accompanied said gift, I started to question why. Why did the donator of such gift think I would enjoy a solo trip to Barcelona? I questioned him through misty eyes. And all I got back was ‘well, you’re always moaning that you don’t do anything on your own’. By this, I pointed out, I meant going for a walk, maybe joining a gym, enrolling in a pottery class or perhaps learning how to dress make. Not traveling a thousand sodding miles to a city I’ve never been to, a country where I can’t speak the language, TO SIGHTSEE ALONE, DINE ALONE, SLEEP ALONE! As this year’s festivities loom ever closer, the fear is building once again. It will be the first Christmas spent with my new partner and although I am pretty sure, after almost a year together, he knows what I like and what I don’t… the anxiety of what lurks beneath the Christmas Tree is ever present. So… I might just purchase a ticket to Barcelona along with an alluring full-length zebra-striped evening gown and forget all about it ^
